How to plan the ultimate Adriatic coastal adventure in Montenegro's Bay of Kotor

Tucked along the Adriatic coast, this bay showcases Montenegro at its most idyllic, with buzzy towns, one-of-a-kind culinary experiences and mountainous national parks on its doorstep.

Over the past decade, Montenegro has quietly cultivated a reputation as one of southeastern Europe’s most eclectic travel destinations. Though smaller than many of its Balkan neighbours, its alpine interior has much to offer the adventurous traveller, from white-water rafting in dramatic gorges to skiing and snowboarding in winter.

However, it’s on the coast that the country shines brightest. Ringed by the Dinaric Alps and encompassing the municipalities of Kotor, Herceg Novi and Tivat, the Bay of Kotor — or Boka Bay as it’s known locally — is an undulating succession of cerulean coves, pebble beaches and UNESCO-listed medieval towns. all of which sit beneath Mount Lovćen, the ‘black mountain’ that gives Montenegro its name.

Montenegrins may pride themselves on their chilled-out demeanour but, in warmer months, Boka Bay’s pedestrianised urban centres throng with locals flitting between wine bars — live jazz flooding onto town squares where cats laze contentedly. Its religious art and medieval architecture now sit alongside increasingly creative culinary experiences, not   to mention a growing infrastructure for active exploration. And, with new flight routes from the UK to Tivat Airport making the region more accessible than ever, popular bases such as Kotor are primed for short breaks.

Day 1: Medieval towns and mountain hikes

Morning Start with a hike along Kotor’s fortified city walls, which date back to the 9th century and snake up to the San Giovanni fortress. It’s a steep climb, but worth it for the epic views over the bay. On the way down, stop by the Church of our Lady of Remedy, completed in 1518 and said to grant good health to those that visit for a prayer. Cool off with baked peach and vanilla ice cream from stone-fronted Moritz Eis before exploring the Old Town’s Venetian-style squares and alleyways, which are full of cafes, wine shops and trinket-laden boutiques. Don’t miss St Luke’s Church — which has a combination of Catholic and Orthodox altars — or St Tryphon’s Cathedral, a shimmering basilica dedicated to the town’s protective saint.

Afternoon It’s a short drive from the Old Town to Kotor Cable Car , which climbs some 4,300ft to the rocky heights of Lovćen National Park. Prior to the lift’s opening in 2023, the only way to reach the 24sq-mile park was via the tight hairpin turns of ‘Serpentine Road’. Many still ascend this way, watching the views slowly unfold. High-octane adventures await those who make it to the top — from an alpine rollercoaster to gruelling hiking routes. But the mountain’s crowning jewel is its mausoleum, said to be the highest in the world. Whipped by cold winds 5,500ft above Boka Bay, it’s the resting place of 19th-century prince-bishop Petar II Petrović-Njegoš. On a clear day, the view stretches all the way to Albania.

Evening At sunset, drive eight miles west to Perast, a waterfront town bursting with baroque palaces, and catch the five-minute ferry to the islet of Our Lady of the Rocks. It’s said that in 1452 an icon of the Madonna was found here, caught on a jutting crag. Passing sailors went on to lay stones on the site, forming a man-made island upon which a Byzantine-style church was built in the 17th century. Inside, the walls are lined with silver pieces bearing maritime motifs —   gifts made by seamen to thank the Virgin Mary for their safe passage. Not all could offer silver; the church museum displays five centuries’ worth of offerings, from anchors to photographs. Back in Perast, take an ocean-side table at Riva to enjoy seafood caught from the bay.

Day 2: Farms and feasts

Morning As the sun begins to creep over the peaks, make for the sanctuary of Gornja Lastva . This small settlement on the slopes of Vrmac mountain, just above Tivat, is home to just one full-time resident. Narrow streets lined with traditional stone houses and overgrown pomegranate trees lead to the heart of the village. It’s here you’ll find the Church of Saint Maria. Built in 1410, this Roman Catholic church features original Orthodox frescoes, evidence of the region’s diverse religious heritage. Book a tour of 19th-century Gornja Lastva Olive Mill for insight into the processes behind one of the area’s most coveted products. After hearing how it was used to press olives into oil, stop for a mid-morning snack of priganice, a deep-fried doughball served with honey and best enjoyed with a warming shot of Montenegrin rakija, a type of brandy.

Afternoon A 20-mile drive along coastal roads brings you to the Luštica Peninsula. The last headland before the Adriatic, the area is home to a wealth of fortresses. Take Mamula Island , an isolated 19th-century fort reimagined as a 32-room luxury hotel. Opened in 2023 — and open to day visitors — it has three restaurants and a secluded pool deck. Alternatively, get a bird’s-eye view of the island from the terrace of Herceg Novi Pony Art Garden, a family-run farmstead in the Luštica hills. Hosts Žizela Marković and Nenad Obradović serve up course after course of Montenegrin specialities, from slow-roasted red pepper dips to meaty black squid risotto, all washed down with local wines and traditional fruit brandies. Before you leave, be sure to feed the ponies and donkeys that live in the backyard.

Evening Lean into the luxury side of Boka Bay at Porto Montenegro . This modern marina has become a magnet for the superyacht set, thanks to its high-end restaurants, bars and fashion boutiques. Take a sunset walk along the palm-lined promenade to nosey at the ships before swinging by Buddha-Bar Beach for pre-dinner cocktails soundtracked by a chilled-out DJ set. For dinner, take a ferry across the water to Ćatovića Mlini restaurant. The lush gardens and bubbling fountains of this former mill provide the perfect setting for a seafood tasting menu. Highlights include saffron and shrimp risotto and crispy sea bass in truffle sauce. Opt for the wine pairing, which includes a selection of Montenegrin wines, including a special edition red Vranac from the Plantaže winery in Podgorica.

Three more adventure bases

1. Cetinje Montenegro’s capital until 1946, the southern city of Cetinje lays claim to King Nikola’s Palace, once the seat of the Montenegrin royal family and now a fascinating museum. The exhibits explore the reign of King Nikola I, with a series of perfectly preserved bedrooms and reception areas offering a glimpse into 19th-century royal life. The city is also just a 10-minute drive from Lipa Cave , one of Montenegro’s most spectacular subterranean destinations. Knowledgeable guides lead excursions into the one-and-a-half-mile web of passages, emerging into colossal caverns where huge stalagmites rise from the depths. Wine-tastings and concerts are occasionally held here, too, the latter making use of the unique acoustics.

2. Zabljak This small town in the forested north serves as a gateway to Durmitor National Park, a vast 79,000-acre wilderness home to three canyons, 18 glacial lakes and around 50 peaks over 6,500ft. Durmitor is a top spot for thrill-seekers, with opportunities for climbing, horse-riding, mountain biking and even ice cave visits. When it comes to hiking, beginners can find their feet on the gentle loop around Crno Jezero — named the ‘Black Lake’ due to its ink-blue water — while more serious hikers can test their mettle scrambling up 8,300ft Bobotov Kuk. The views get even better over at Tara River Gorge. One of the deepest canyons in Europe, its dramatic chasms make for exhilarating white-water rafting and kayaking trips.

3. Kolašin Founded by the Ottomans in the 17th century, the former fortress settlement of Kolašin promises high-altitude adrenaline all year round. At the foot of the northerly Bjelasica and Sinjajevina mountains, there are two winter snowsports centres: Kolašin 1600 and Kolašin 1450, with plenty of gentle runs making the 30-mile shared ski area great for families and beginners. In warmer months, Kolašin’s greatest draw becomes its proximity to Biogradska Gora. Though the smallest of Montenegro’s five national parks, its landscapes are unparalleled. The area’s high levels of rainfall mean that the glacial waters of Lake Biograd are surrounded by virgin temperate rainforest, home to countless bird species and trees up to 500 years old.

TOURIST PLACES NEAR KOTDWAR:

Kotdwara is located at the foothills of the Shivaliks at a distance of 101kms from Pauri. It is situated at a height of 395m above sea level. Kotdwara literally means gateway to Garhwal. Kotdwar is famous for its several temples like the siddhabali temple which is located at a distance of 2kms from Kotdwar.

Rishikesh, literally means Lord of the Senses, stands for Lord Vishnu and the city is blessed with the flowing of Holy Ganges. The city is a hub of many ancient and new temples, attracting thousands of pilgrims throughout the year. The popular belief of Hindu devotees is that performing austerities in this holy town and offering prayers in the holy temples brings the much needed attainment of , the salvation.

Haridwar  meaning  Gateway to God  is one of the seven holiest places of the Hindus, located on the banks of River Ganges. It is the place where river Ganga descends to the plains. Haridwar is also spelled as Hardwar or Hari- Dwar. Haridwar is often mentioned in ancient scriptures and even referred during the British times. With Ujjain, Nasik and Allahabad, Haridwar forms the four important pilgrimage centres of India where Kumbh Mela is celebrated here after every 3 years rotated over these 4 destinations. 

Roorkee  is a city in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. One of the oldest cities in India, the city of Roorkee is located along the  Ganga canal , and is a very well connected region in Northern India, with good access to all the major cities and towns. Roorkee is mainly famous for its very old cantonment, also called the Roorkee Cantonment. Roorkee is also very famous because this city is the main headquarters of the Bengal Engineer Group.

Mussoorie,  a picturesque hill station in the Northern part of India, was discovered in the 18th century by Captain Young. The British officials added to the popularity of this hill station, as they mostly visited it as a getaway from the heat during summer. Mussoorie is located at an altitude of 2000 meters above sea level, on a horseshoe  shaped ridge. The charming hill station of  Lansdowne  is also the quietest hill station of India.Lansdowne became popular since Britishers came to India and shifted a part of thecantonment board to Lansdowne from Almora in Uttarakhand (earlier Uttaranchal).Lansdowne hill station is situated at an altitude of 1,706mts above sea level in Uttarakhand India.

New Tehri 

New Tehri  is the only planned hill township of Uttarakhand which was made during the construction of the Tehri dam. Every month thousands of tourists visit Tehri to see the stagnant water of the massive Tehri Dam. The Dam is situated amidst high mountains many of which are submerged under water. New Tehri is very well connected with motorable roads. Tehri is situated 69kms from Mussoorie. There are many good hotels in New Tehri.

Auli  Tourism  is the most popular skiing destination of Uttaranchal state. Auli is situated in Chamoli district of Garhwal region covering elevation from 2,519mts to 3,050mts above sea level. Auli is a "bugyal" which means meadow in the regional language. Auli is often compared with best ski resorts of the world y foreigners. 

Joshimath  is a popular hill station and a famous centre for pilgrimage at a height of 1,890mts above sea level in Chamoli district of Garhwal division in Uttaranchal. In ancient scriptures Joshimath is described as Kartikeyapura as it has been named after Kartikeya, the God of Katyuri kings. Joshimath is one of the four maths or monasteries established in the 8th century by Adi Guru Sri Shankaracharya.

Badrinath  Tourism Sandwiched between Nar and Narayan mountain ranges, Badrinath in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand is naturally bestowed with pristine surroundings.

Gangotri  is the highest temple of Goddess Ganga and one of the four dhams of Uttarakhand state. Gangotri is situated at an elevation of 3,048mts above sea level at a distance of 21kms from Harsil. Gangotri offers scenic splendors of rugged terrains, gushing water of Bhagirathi River and snow laden Himalayas.

Hemkund Sahib

Hemkund Sahib  is situated at an altitude of 4,329 mts above sea level in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand state. Hemkund literally suggests lake of snow and the pristine water of this lake is as cold as snow. Numerous waterfalls, dense forest, enchanting view of the Himalayas, crystal clear lake and the holy Hemkund Sahib are the key highlights of this trekking trip. The weather changes very rapidly at Hemkund Sahib.

Uttarkashi  meaning Kashi of the north, is a town in Uttarakhand, India. It is the district headquarters of Uttarkashi district. Uttarkashi is situated on the banks of river Bhagirathi at an altitude of 1352 m above sea level. Best Trip Ever With Allseasonsz

It was a trip of a lifetime. Everything about it - the planning process, the accommodations, the logistics, the itinerary, even the weather! was top notch. Our agent was very easy to work with. She responded promptly and answered all our questions completely, and made us feel at ease even though we are used to handling every last detail ourselves. We got a very detailed itinerary with restaurant recommendations to boot, and when we got to our hotel, a print-out with additional maps/vouchers/brochures was waiting for us. The hotel recommended were of very good quality, either centrally located, with excellent facilities, fantastic hosts, or all of the above. The town is around 50 kilometres from Mussoorie and is also close to Dhanaulti, Surkanda Devi Temple, Ranichauri, New Tehri, and Kanatal, which is located midway between Chamba and Dhanaulti. At a distance of 2.5 km from Lansdowne Market, Tip-In-Top, also known as Tiffin Top, is situated near St. Mary’s Church in Lansdowne. 

This is the most popular place to visit in Lansdowne for tourists visiting here.

Tiffin Top is an elegant scenic picnic spot which is located at a height of 2,000 m above sea level. It provides an awesome view of the Chaukhamba and Trishul peaks of the Garhwal Himalayas. The sunset view from here is truly memorable. It is an ideal place to spend some quality time with family and friends, covering this beautiful location. This place needs a short walk of about 200 meters from the motorable road.

We can also enjoy Snow View or Sunset View Point lying on the way to Tiffin Top. The point provides an awesome view of the sunset and also the snow, which is covered with peaks of the surrounding Garhwal mountain peaks.

2) St. Mary’s Church – A Glimpse into History

At a distance of 2.5 km from Lansdowne, St. Mary’s Church is a church situated near the Tip-In-Top hill point of Lansdowne.  To give some background information on the Church, it was built by Col. A.H.B Hume of the Royal Engineers. St Mary’s Church is a famous tourist destination and a popular place to visit in Lansdowne .  This church was closed after 1947, and after that, it was converted into a museum by the Garhwal Rifles Regimental Centre.

This Church is a beautiful structure with its Victorian-style architecture. A number of visitors came to this place because of its beautiful stained glass windows. It has a picture gallery, and a short 10-minute documentary on the history of Lansdowne and Garhwal Rifles is played. It is open only at weekends.

Located atop a hill at an altitude of 2092 m, Tarkeshwar Mahadev Temple is believed to be one of the earliest divine sites known as Siddha Piths given to Lord Shiva. It is one of the most famous temples of Uttarakhand state, which is memorable.

According to the epic, Tarkasur was a master who meditated and worshipped Lord Shiva at this location for a blessing. Grateful for his devotion, Lord Shiva gave him a blessing of immortality as per Tarkasur’s request, except from Lord Shiva’s son. Tarkasur started being wrong by killing saints and threatening gods. Sages asked for help from Lord Shiva. Disturbed by the wrongdoings of Tarakasur, Lord Shiva married Parvati and Kartikeya was born. Kartikeya, Shiva’s son, killed Tarkasur, but at the time of death, Tarkasur prayed to Lord Shiva and asked for pardon. 

Mahadev then devoted his name to the temple where Tarkasur meditated once. Hence, the place is known by Tarkeshwar Mahadev.

The Presiding goddess of this temple is Lord Shiva. The temple is located amidst the thick forests of Deodar, Cedar and Pine. Earlier, there was a Shivling present at the Tarkeshwar Mahadev temple, but now a Lord Shiva idol performing tandava is praised. The Shivling in the temple is placed under the image of the goddess. 

A temple dedicated to the Goddess Shakti lies adjacent to the main temple. According to another myth, it is said that Goddess Parvati had converted herself into seven deodar trees to provide shade to Lord Shiva, and the deodar trees of the region have originated from these seven trees. The shape of the deodar grove is believed to be in the form of the letter Om.

Lansdowne : Lansdowne is unlike other hill stations as it is well connected with motorable roads but remote in its own way. It is one of the quietest hill stations of India, situated at an altitude of 1700mts above sea level surrounded with thick oak and blue pine forests. Lansdowne is located 40kms from Kotdwara. Lansdowne is a Cantonment area of the Garhwal Rifles of Indian Army and therefore there are limited hotels at this place. Do make prior bookings in the hotels before visiting Lansdowne.

Tarkeshwar Mahadev : This place is named for the temple of Tarkeshwar Mahadev dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is an ideal place for those who wish to seek solace in the lap of nature. This place is surrounded by thick forests of Deodar and Pine affording scenic vistas of Nature. Tarkeshwar temple is located at a distance of 70 km from Kotdwara

Pauri : Situated at an elevation of 1814mts above sea level and at a distance of 101kms from Kotdwar, Pauri Garhwal is located on the northwest slopes of Kandoliya Hills in Garhwal region of Uttarakhand state . Diverse in topography and filled with places of tourist interest, most locations in Pauri offers the invigorating view of the majestic snow-capped peaks of the Himalayan range.

Haridwar :  Haridwar is situated at an altitude of 295mts above sea level on the banks of the sacred Ganga River. It is the gateway to the Char Dhams of Hindus situated in Uttarakhand , namely Badrinath , Kedarnath , Gangotri , Yamunotri . Haridwar is also written as Hardwar. The meaning of Haridwar in hindi language means Dwar of Hari or Gateway to God where 'Hari' means god and 'dwar' means gate. Haridwar is visited by lakhs of devotees every month to take a sacred dip in the holy water of Ganga River. The next Kumbh Mela to be celebrated at Haridwar will be in the year 2016. Har-ki-Pauri , Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi are the main attraction of the town. Haridwar is situated 76kms from Kotdwar.

Ramnagar : It is situated in the Nainital district of the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand state  on the banks of Kosi River at an elevation of 345 mts above sea level. Ramnagar town was established in 1856 by Commissioner H.Ramsay. It is situated in the rich farm belt of Terai, on the southeastern fringes of the great forests. The busy market town of Ramnagar is the main administrative center for Corbett National Park and Project Tiger and is connected with motorable roads as well as railway networks. Its proximity to Corbett national park and Nainital makes it an even more popular destination.
