The True Story Behind the Sinking of the Urca de Lima in 'Black Sails'

What is the difference between a harfoot and a hobbit, while you wait for 'the boys' final season, watch this irreverent sci-fi series.

Over the years, the Star Trek universe has expanded and given audiences fantastic T.V. shows. Early ones like The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine , and Voyager paved the way for new platforms for the Star Trek Universe to play with. And Star Trek is no stranger to having episodes that seemed far out but were indeed ahead of their time. Audiences are on the edge of their seats as the newer shows debut. The Discovery spin-off Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is one of the many brilliant series audiences can't get enough of. We follow Captain Christopher Pike ( Anson Mount ) and his crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise as they explore the galaxies and discover strange new worlds. We see many classic characters from The Original Series , like Spock ( Ethan Peck ), Uhura ( Celia Rose Gooding ), and Nurse Chapel ( Jess Bush ), plus some new ones you won't want to miss. Before warping into Season 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , here's everything you need to know about Season 1.

Before we jump into Strange New Worlds , a reminder of something significant that happened on Discovery : Christopher Pike touches a time crystal and sees his future, where saves the lives of other Starfleet personnel but ends up trapped in a room of radiation poisoning after a baffle plate rupture on a training vessel. Then time jumps to Pike being what we saw in the original series: disfigured and in a brain-wave operating wheelchair. This, of course, causes severe trauma for Pike.

Maximum Impulse as the Crew Soars Through Space

In the first episode of Strange New Worlds , Pike is still at odds with his fate and trying to escape his responsibilities by hiding on his ranch in Montana, making one of his signature breakfasts for Captain Batel ( Melanie Scrofano ), and ditching calls from Starfleet. But finally, someone comes; Admiral Robert April ( Adrian Holmes ) comes to see Pike in a shuttle and delivers the news that his number one, Una Chin-Riley ( Rebecca Romijn ), has gone missing with a couple of Starfleet Officers. So, of course, Pike doesn't hesitate and heads for the Enterprise.

But Pike can't go alone. He'll need his science officer Spock to accompany him. For Spock's shore leave, he's decided to spend time with his partner T'Pring ( Gia Sandhu ), who had just proposed, and the two were about to engage in a mating ritual before Pike called. Nevertheless, Spock answers the call and starts for the Enterprise. This is where we see the Enterprise in all her beauty for the first time in this T.V. series. Bright colors and a shiny finish make it perfect. Plus, this is where some of the new characters are introduced, like the new Chief of Security, La'an Noonien-Singh ( Christina Chong ), pilot Erica Ortegas ( Melissa Navia ), and the prodigy Cadet Uhura.

The Enterprise crew finds Una on a planet where she was trying to make first contact. Little did they know that society hadn't built a warp drive yet. But they somehow have some technology and have created a warp bomb. Another thing about this planet is that they've been at war for a long time and refuse to talk to one another. But does Pike decide not to break General Order One, not to interfere with the natural order, and leave their people behind? Of course not. That's when an away team is put into place. But the mission wouldn't be complete without disguises—and excruciating ones, especially with Spock's Vulcan genetics. Nurse Chapel and Doctor M'Benga ( Babs Olusanmokun ) work on altering their faces before the away team beams down to the surface. Once they get down there, they find Una and the officers. They go back to the ship while Spock and Pike stay down to meet the people of this planet. They meet the leaders and make them negotiate with each other, or they could end up like Earth if they continue on this path. They give them a choice: to either go to war or join the Federation and reach for the stars. Fortunately for the planet, they chose the latter. And with that mission complete, it's on to the next.

The next time we see this crew, they're studying a comet. This comet is heading right for Persephone III, so its mission is to destroy or move it out of the way. But once they fire at the comet, they find out it's got a force field around it and are promptly contacted by the Shepherds. The Sheppards explain that that is no comet but actually the M'hanit, the ancient arbiter of life. So, naturally, an away team beams down onto the comet, which is Uhura's first away mission. A giant egg in the M'hanit's center has all kinds of markings. After much deliberation and Sam Kirks's ( Dan Jeannotte ) heart-stopping after approaching the egg, Uhura can deduce that the egg communicates by harmonics. But The Shepherds don't like that they have disturbed the egg and start blasting the Enterprise. After the away team beams off the M'hanit, Spock uses a shuttles heat shield to nudge the M'hanit to change course. It does and also douses Persephone III in water, changing its entirety of societal development, plant growth, and agriculture. And since the M'hanit wasn't hurt, they and the crew don't part as enemies. But it turns out the M'hanit was all-knowing, as it sent the Enterprise an image of the chunk of rock that got broken when Spock was heating it before the event occurred.

In Episode 3, we learn about the Illiryans who genetically modify themselves to become better without sickness . Many officers beam down to explore this old colony with no survivors. But they can't do anything with a fast-approaching ion storm blocking their transporters. That is until Chief Engineer Hemmer ( Bruce Horak ) saves the day. He gets them back to the Enterprise in one piece. But Spock and Pike are trapped on the planet. At least Spock found some journals to keep him busy. However, on the ship, one of the officers picked up an illness that caused a severe drop in vitamin D, causing him to be drawn to heat sources. Everyone on the ship starts to contract this virus. Una gets it second but starts glowing and is suddenly alright. It's later discovered that she is an Illyrian, and they're not allowed in the Federation because of their genetic modifications. And it's her blood that ends up saving everyone after she keeps La'an from deactivating the warp core containment field. As the Doctor says: "Prejudice has kept people from helping each other for centuries with no scientific reason." And as Spock and Pike found out from the journals, the colonists on the planet were trying to fix their modifications to join Starfleet. Then as the ion storm hits full blast, plasma creatures come to save them, and Spock theorizes they were the colonists. By the end of the episode, Una tells the Captain that she is Illyrian and is ready to resign, but Pike won't allow it. She's part of the crew, and he intends her to stay that way.

Things take a turn for the scary in Episode 4 when the Enterprise is on the way to deliver an atmospheric upgrade to Finibus III and run into the Gorn, La'an's worst nightmare, after being captured and escaping from them when she was a child . The Gorn attacked Finibus III and massacred everything in sight. They then start attacking the Enterprise, and as La'an knows, they won't back down. Meanwhile, the Matrix in engineering has blown and needs repairs. Uhura is working with Hemmer for this rotation. He breaks his hand and cannot fix it without help, which means he has to quickly become a team player. The Enterprise is on the verge of critical condition by this point, but all hope is not lost. La'an goes on a mission to outmaneuver the ruthless Gorn, who will stop at nothing to win , but La'an gets the best of them while Pike figures out a way for the crew to slingshot off a black hole using the explosion of the Matrix. After they escape that debacle, killing the remaining Gorn in the process, they head back into the depths of space.

Halfway Through, The Adventure Continues

In the next adventure, the crew is docked at Star Base One for repairs—time for relaxation and shore leave. But Spock is troubled by a dream where T'Pring doesn't want to be married to him because he's fully human, and she challenges him to a duel where it turns out he has to fight his Vulcan self. This rattles Spock deeply, especially since T'Pring is coming for a visit. After a chat with Nurse Chapel, Spock comes up with the idea that he and T'Pring should do a Vulcan Soul Sharing Ritual where they could hear each other's inner thoughts. This goes awry and almost ends up in a hijinx when they switch bodies entirely and must act as each other . This enlightens them about the sacrifices and duties each has to perform, and with some help from the Doctor, they return to their bodies. While everyone else is off enjoying shore leave, La'an and Una (where fun goes to die) stumble upon Starfleet Bingo. In an attempt to prove to themselves that they aren't where fun goes to die, they complete the tasks and figure out that it's simply about blowing off steam and doing something risky just because you can. Meanwhile, on a more serious note, Captain Pike is trying to negotiate with the Rangouions for a space route; after some deliberation, Pike figures out that the Rangouions are radical empaths and want people to try and see things from their perspective.

In Episode 6, we're transported to the planet of Majalis , where we learn about the First Servant, a holy figure chosen at birth to be their maximum. In a few days, he will ascend and save the planet from destruction. And after a kidnapping attempt, Pike decides to help. It doesn't help that the woman asking for help is the love of Pike's life. Her name is Alora. But it turns out the intention is different from what you would think. The child is sacrificed to the planet. Pikes try to stop it but are ultimately taken out until he wakes up in Alora's bedroom. The First Servant's father figures this out and wants to go to the colony that tries to stop this from happening, hoping he can help save the next child.

In Episode 7, we get a different start . Rather than on the Enterprise, we see where T'Pring works: the Ankeshtan K'til Vulcan Criminal Rehabilitation Centre. She calls Spock and tells him she wants to explore his human side and spice things up. This freaks Spock out because T'Pring seems more eager to explore his human side than he is. Switching back to the Enterprise, we meet Dr. Aspen, AKA Captain Angel, who plays a wicked mind twist with the crew in an attempt to free Xaverius from the facility T'Pring works at by using Spock as leverage. That only works as logic prevails. Captain Pike and the rest of the crew perform some mind tricks when the Serene Squall Pirates capture them and have to get them to perform a mutiny if they want any chance of surviving. Luckily the crew knows what they're doing, and they save the day again.

During a routine survey of the Genesion Nebula in Episode 8, the crew stumbles upon a Boltzmann Brain. This is a theoretically spontaneously generated consciousness, an intelligent mind without a physical body. It changes everything on the ship to the story of the book the Doctor reads to his daughter Rukiya ( Sage Arrindell ) called The Kingdom of Elysian . Everyone transforms into the magical people of this story, and the Doctor thinks he's going insane as only he and Hemmer remain aware. He thinks this is due to the explosion in his lab while working on a cure for Rukiya's illness, but it was the entity playing with Rukiya. It felt her loneliness and sickness and wanted to take it away. Speaking through Hemmer, the entity conveys that it can improve Rukiya and that she'll never know death; her body is sick, not her mind. Of course, this kills the Doctor on the inside, but he knows it's the right decision. After mere seconds of leaving, she returns fully grown and tells her father to thank him and don't worry; they'll see each other again.

Uhura is done with her Enterprise assignment after they deliver vidium cells to the Deep Space 7 Station, so the landing party goes down to the icy planet (which Hemmer loves, as it reminds him of home), where they find everyone massacred. Their enemy, the Gorn, is there, however, hatching out of one of the life signs still left on the ship. The other is a girl who has just barely escaped from the Gorn. Using the temperature regulators, the crew can maneuver the Gorn (because they hate the cold), where they can set a trap for them. If the baby Gorn doesn't kill each other first. They manage to outmaneuver the Gorn, but not before one spits their slime on Hemmer, which we later learn is how they lay their eggs. Hemmer sacrifices himself by going out into the cold and throwing himself off the side of the mountain . This was especially tough for Uhura, as they had become quite close. Hemmer had fulfilled his purpose: to fix what was broken.

In the season finale, things get interesting . Pike has been trying to deal with his fate the entire season, but it, naturally, still has a hold on him. But in this episode, he meets one of the kids who dies on the training ship. It sends him on a downward spiral, which causes him to start writing letters to all the kids who are supposed to be on the ship that day, telling them not to show up. That's when the Klingons send the Future Pike to show him what will happen if he tries to dodge his fate. Future Pike takes the current Pike to the future, where we discover that if Pike changes things, he could start a war with the Romulans, which should never happen. These guys also see Romulans for the first time and are surprised when they look similar to Vulcans. We get Spock's signature eyebrow raise as his reaction to the situation. Spock almost dies in this timeline, and James Kirk ( Paul Wesley ) dies as a sacrifice. Pike can't live with this, so he returns to the present and starts to come to terms. One thing that stays the same in the future, however, is Una's situation. The Federation finds out that she's Illyrian and comes to arrest her. They take her away. Will Pike be able to get her back?

  • Trivia Until now, there has been much speculation about how many deaths there were in WW III. Pike has made it canon that 30% of the Earth's population - between 2.1 and 2.4 billion people were killed and 600,000 species of plants and animals were eradicated.
  • Goofs Chapel is able to make several crewmen resemble the native residents of Kiley 279 by injecting them with gene therapy based on the genetic code of the planet's inhabitants. As Starfleet has not made contact with the planet (other than the three missing officers from the Archer), there is no way she would have genetic material from its inhabitants to use in her work. However, even on 21st century Earth, complete genome sequences (and other biological information) are widely available online. Chapel could easily have accessed the planet's equivalent of the internet. Moreover, Una's ship could have had samples of biological material which she could have accessed.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Episode 1 Review

The first episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a thrilling return to the foundational principles of the franchise, anchored by Anson Mount's fantastic central performance.

The following contains Star Trek: Strange New Worlds spoilers

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Episode 1

As the Star Trek franchise has expanded in recent years, so has the debate about what these series are supposed to be and do. What makes a show quintessentially Star Trek ? What kinds of stories are these properties meant to tell? After all, in the year 2022, the world seems more divided than ever before, reeling from the lingering effects of a global pandemic, rising inflation, and a political environment that seems targeted to anger the worst in us, rather than exhort us to be our best.

Our entertainment is increasingly bleak, often full of edgy anti-heroes, disheartening conspiracy theories, grim monsters, and dangerous technology. Even Star Trek has dipped its proverbial toe into darker narrative waters, with both Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Discovery frequently wrestling with much more complex themes and nihilistic stories than any of their predecessors did (with varying degrees of success).

In light of all this, is it incredibly naive to still believe in Gene Roddenberry’s vision of a future where humanity has conquered its worst impulses in the name of becoming its best self? That we might one day all actually be able to boldly go together into a better, more perfect future? Or given, well, everything happening around us, is his determined message of hope and a belief in a better tomorrow somehow more necessary than it’s ever been?

Ad – content continues below

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds appears to be the franchise’s attempt to answer that question, a big-hearted, rollicking return to the foundational principles of the show that started it all, firmly grounded in the deeply personal story of the captain at its center. It is joyous, impeccably cast, and (something I haven’t regularly said about Star Trek in some time) incredibly fun to watch. From its off-handed callbacks and Easter Eggs to its thoughtful character dynamics and gorgeous visuals, everything about this show reflects the care that has been put into creating it. And if we are going to trust the U.S.S. Enterprise to anyone, who better than some obvious fellow nerds who clearly love it as much as we do?

Yes, the premiere episode “Strange New Worlds” has an awful lot of set-up lot to do, but the series’ introductory hour never drags or feels bogged down by its expository duties. The series pilot initially picks up with everyone we originally met on Discovery, and where their stories have gone post-Season 2 finale . Captain Pike (Anson Mount) is in Montana wrestling with the foreknowledge of a future that includes radiation disfigurement, paralysis, and physical agony; Spock’s (Ethan Peck) getting engaged to a woman who seems way much cooler than he is on Vulcan; and Number One (Rebecca Romijn) is a workaholic on a first contact mission with the U.S.S Archer .

It is her disappearance on that mission that brings Pike and the Enterprise crew back to space a bit earlier than originally scheduled; they’ve got to find her and bring her home. It’s also an easy excuse to introduce us to the rest of the series’ main cast, which includes a mix of new and familiar classic faces (or, well, at least characters whose names we’ve heard before).

There’s Cadet Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), the show’s new take on a younger version of the iconic Star Trek: The Original Series character, here presented as a young woman fresh out of Starfleet Academy and a linguistic prodigy who is clearly deeply excited about all the adventures that await her. Dr. M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun)—a character who appeared in all of two episodes of The Original Series but still! —is running things in sickbay alongside Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) whose demonstrable smarts and ability to think outside the box indicate she’s likely going to have much more to do on this series than pine after Spock.

New security officer La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) has a familiar name and a dark history of her own, and though feisty helmsman Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia) has little in the way of defining characteristics as yet she at least seems pretty fun. While we may not know much about most of these people as yet, the show nevertheless quickly establishes the larger group’s chemistry as easy and believable.

But it’s impossible to talk about why Strange New Worlds works so well without talking about Anson Mount, whose central performance as Captain Christopher Pike remains as note-perfect as it was when he was guest-starring on Discovery . There are moments where it feels like we all essentially willed this entire show into existence simply because his casting in this role is so perfect, and I’d like that to be true because, whew, y’all we were right . Aggressively normal in all the best ways and bursting with everyman charm, Pike blends the best of classic Trek nostalgia with more modern sensibilities, resulting in a leader who is as skilled at empathy, kindness, and consensus-building as he is fighting.

I’ve written elsewhere at some length about why this Pike is so necessary and important in the Star Trek universe, and I’m happy to tell you that Strange New Worlds has fully leaned into this interpretation of the character, refusing the temptation to turn his story into a dark tragedy but instead embracing the idea that his journey is ultimately one of self-determination and hope. After all: If nothing we do matters—then all that truly matters is what we do. In the end, if Original Series episode “The Menagerie” is always going to be waiting for him no matter what, then the true question Pike must answer isn’t how to feel about that fate, but what he’s going to do with the time that’s been given to him until it comes to pass.

Get the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!

There are certainly plenty of interesting places to take that sort of story: Will Pike make riskier choices simply because he knows that he is not going to die on a random away mission? Will he make less dangerous decisions because while he can essentially guarantee his own safety he can’t say the same for his crew? Or will he do his best to let his shipmates—and those they come into contact with—find their fates for themselves?

Strange New Worlds may clearly be setting itself up to tell easily digestible weekly adventures—and I think there is certainly space within this franchise of space shows for one that just wants to roam the galaxy in search of new cultures and cool aliens. But after watching this pilot, it seems clear that it’s also inevitably going to be a story about the nature of fate and the consequences of the choices we make—for ill, yes. But also, inexorably and relentlessly for good. Because goodness—the idea of being a good person, of doing good in the world—is still something we have to choose to do every day.

“Perhaps somewhere all your ends are written as indelibly as mine. But I choose to believe that your destinies are still your own,” Pike tells the warring factions of Kileans, as part of an uplifting speech about why they don’t have to tear themselves apart the way those on Earth did once. “Maybe that’s why I’m here. To remind you of the power of possibility.”

In the end, that seems to be nothing so much as a mission statement for Strange New Worlds writ large: That it is always better to travel hopefully, to lead with empathy, and to believe that our better angels can carry the day, in the end, even if we have to bend the rules a little bit along the way to help them do so. To remember why we fell in love with this franchise in the first place and the simple powerful message it still carries. In hope, all things are possible.

So, as Captain Pike himself would say: Hit it.

Never was super big into Star Trek but after rewatching the Kelvin trilogy I decided to dive right in with Strange New Worlds. I loved both seasons of this and found myself getting right into The Original Series when I finished up. The characters are rich and complex and the balance between lighthearted moments and serious ones is incredible. Really love this show and can't wait for the next season.

I started watching Star Trek around 1966, I enjoyed it then and I enjoy it now in whatever new versions it’s in.

No shade towards any other Star Trek series released recently, but I think Strange New Worlds is the best entry point for newcomers. The series is a return to the classic tone and style of earlier series, but with stellar modern characterizations and little need to do any additional homework.

Whether you have been a Trekkie since the beginning or are completely new to the franchise, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is undoubtedly worth watching. Following the adventures of Captain Christopher Pike and his USS Enterprise, the show fills in the time period before Captain Kirk took over command. The cast of Strange New Worlds is pitch-perfect, with Anson Mount's Captain Pike and Celia Rose Gooding's Uhura particular standouts. With the perfect combination of stand-alone adventures and serialized story threads, Strange New Worlds feels like classic Trek made for the modern era of television and pretty much everything about just works.

So Stange New Words is streaming at 4k (that’s my understanding)

So why no 4k release?

Does this mean you would be “downgrading” in quality with Bluray?

It’s come up before, but it’s definitely weird to me.

In my opinion, the fact that we’re getting physical media releases of new Star Trek at all is a miracle. With the rise of streaming and the steady decline of physical media sales I am grateful we get these Blu-rays of Discovery, Picard, Short Treks, Lower Decks, Prodigy, and Strange New Worlds. Physical media is and always will be the best way to enjoy movies and TV at home, but most people have gleefully sacrificed quality and control for convenience. I just wish Disney/LucasFilm would adopt the same policy…I so want to own The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Bad Batch, Andor, and the final seasons of The Clone Wars and Resistance on physical media.

It’s kind of funny you mention Disney’s lack of interest in putting its stuff to physical media. I remember George Lucas used to be a big proponent of home releases back in the day and how Star Wars have changed now since his absence of control and not all for the best.

Agreed. It’s very sad. And at least in my case, they (the streaming service) get my money twice – I both subscribe to Paramount+ so I can see new Trek as it appears, but then I also buy the discs for all future viewing of the shows. I would do the same with Disney+ (I subscribe and would buy the discs too if they were available) … but I imagine I am in the minority. I am a super-fan of Star Trek, Star Wars, and physical media. I still hope that perhaps if Disney needs a small cash-bump they’ll release at least The Mandalorian on disc at some point. Hope springs eternal.

It’s insane to me that you can’t buy any of those shows on disc. I can’t imagine it would actually hurt their streaming subscriptions at all. See also “The Orville,” “Stranger Things,” and too many others to list.

Netflix expects you will subscribe to see their shows, as does Hulu. Paramount likely thinks that as the second tier streamers they will have some people who will buy physical, but never subscribe.

also they probably know some Trek fans will pay for the discs and the service.

ive got a buddy at work that just gets Paramount plus for the one week trial each year for free… but then he will probably get these discs

I agree. I doubt Star Trek being available on disc has hurt Paramount+ at all. I can’t imagine the Star Wars shows being available on disc would hurt Disney+’s subscriptions either. I would think it might feed enthusiasm for subscriptions if the content is available somewhere other than behind the subscription paywall. At the very least, it would be a second way for the shows to generate income. I really wonder if the decision not to release the Star Wars shows on disc is a Disney decision or a LucasFilm decision.

I’d love to know. It could — and this is a cynical read, but it wouldn’t surprise me — come down to not wanting to pay the actors/writers/directors/etc whatever money they would be entitled to from disc sales.

So why does Paramount release “Halo” on 4k disc than? Makes no sense if the want to focus on streaming..

Maybe Halo gets higher sales numbers than Trek.

I would not be surprised if the 4k discs are released later.

As far as downgrading in quality? Maybe…. your Blu-Ray player or TV may upscale 1080P to 4K quality. As in it extrapolates where the extra pixels would or should go. Depending on your settings, the upscaling usually does a good job. I’ve been shown where to look for the shortfalls in upscaling and sometimes I notice them. The physical cost of the media factors in the marketing decision. Also, CBS won’t have a “newly remastered 4K edition” to sell us completists. The 4K ULTRA HD discs I do own? I gulped a bit at the cash register when I paid for them. Retailers aren’t excited to sell them either. Physical media doesn’t justify the square footage required and the profit margins are dismal, when compared to other items. Look at your local Best Buy. Headphones, Bluetooth Speakers and Portable audio yield much better sales per sq foot at better margins. There’s a reason the physical media is located at the back of the store. Another thing to factor in is the size of your TV. I think the bulk of us own 55″-65″ panels. A 1080P picture is 2 million pixels per frame. A 4K picture is up to 8 million pixels per frame. If you’re 10 feet + back from your TV? You may not notice the difference. I’m also very particular about what media I DO buy. I recently renewed my Par+ sub (commercial free) for $50.00 on a promo. I also renewed my US sub for $50.00 just to watch Trek, using a VPN service. I can watch Yellowstone, (I’m in Canada) 1883, 1923, and many more shows I enjoy. Being able to watch on any screen I own is a huge plus. My phone, tablet or desktop/laptop computer do not have an optical drive.

All of that said, I’ve preordered my Steelbook. It’s the one of the few shows that get my disposable $$.

The Strange New Worlds disc is a must-buy for me, the only show I’ve bought to keep since TOS.

I’ve never bought a Steelbook before; how is this different from the blu-ray and DVD?

Fancier packaging.

Thanks for the information! Fancier packaging isn’t worth $12 to me; it’s what’s ON the discs that I care about. :-)

I’m with you on this. Most shows and movies I collect, I am pefectly happy owning on DVD or Blu-ray. Whichever is most affordable, after my monthly utilities and other living expenses. Heck, I still have all the TOS episodes on the old 2 episode per disc releases, which still play just fine. :)

I mean there is definitely a difference in quality between a DVD and a Blu-ray unless you are watching on a very small screen or a screen that only supports SD resolution. But the steelbook does not offer better video or sound quality than the regular release.

The content is the same, the discs just come in a fancy steel case instead of the usual plastic one.

Thanks for the reply! Fancier packaging isn’t worth $12 to me; it’s what’s ON the discs that I care about. :-)

Definitely would rather this in 4K HDR

They should put the Youtube after shows on these.

They really should.

Just a heads-up that Gabrielle Beaumont has died. She was the first woman to direct an episode of Star Trek , and directed 9 episodes of TNG, DS9, and VOY.

Thank you for bringing this up. She directed several TNG episodes I happen to love. Hopefully there is some mention or honor on the various Trek sites.

While SNW is my least favorite of the current shows i still enjoy it enough to get it on disc.

I am a bit angsty about the timing, but I assume S2 of Strange New Worlds will immediately follow S3 of Picard , and it does seem customary to release the previous season on physical media roughly a month or two before the new/upcoming season airs.

Why are you “angsty” about the timing?

Great News! Looking forward to it!

I thought the Pike’s Peak bonus feature might be an in-depth, deep dive discussion into Captain Christopher Pike’s hair.

And why not on 4k disc with HDR???? Like “Halo” or many other also smaller shows?

So why is paramount releasing “Halocon 4k disc if the want to focus on streaming??? And no one can tell me it’s a bigger show than star trek

A lot of people still can’t stream. I work in a library and we still check out a lot of DVDs. I wish Apple and Netflix would relent and release some of their more popular shows and movies on disc. I’m tired of having to tell customers that shows like The Morning Show and Bridgerton and movies like Greyhound and Enola Holmes are not available.

@PARAMOUNT: It’s well known now and appreciated that you listen to what the fans want! This entire show only exists because fans said they wanted it and you were listening! NOW: Despite that it’s may not “trendy” anymore or what ever: Please hear that many of us fans want to have “Picard”, “SNW” etc. ON 4K DISC WITH HDR like you give other fans on Paramount +.

You tell ‘em, Joe!

Why won’t they just take our money??? I can’t even buy Strange New Worlds on iTunes. It’s just totally not available in my country other than on the terrible Crave TV streaming service, which serves it up in Ultra Compressed HD only. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Pre-ordered on Amazon back in October.

Hopefully this will be released in 4k on itunes. Don’t see it listed for purchase yet. Atleast not in Canada

I prefer to own content in its highest quality. While physical disc is my 1st choice, owning a digital copy likely will suffice for my lifetime. So hopefully it will be available in 4k for download soon

The Cover on the steelbook was so beautiful as a teaser Poster, that I actually made it my phone background for a while. Really beautiful.

This is a must-have for me.

Hey everyone, I don’t know if this is old news or not, but it was new to me – a Limited Edition 4K Steelbook of Strange New Worlds Season One just showed up on Blu-ray.com!

Could Star Trek: Strange New Worlds be heading toward a streaming movie?

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a successful Trek show. That's an indisputable fact if we're going by the streaming numbers. The series is now heading into its fourth season while fans wait for the release of its third. In the meantime, speculation is already starting as to if Strange New Worlds could get a movie like Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation did. Not surprisingly, this isn't something completely out of the realm of possibility.

Ethan Peck, who portrays Spock on Strange New Worlds, and Celia Rose Gooding , who plays Uhura, appeared together at a panel for Terrificon [ via Screenrant ], and a fan wanted to know if a movie was a possibility. Peck said he thought there had been discussions about it, but nothing was set in stone. If discussions are already starting before the premiere of the series' third season, that's a good sign.

But when would such a movie air? Between seasons of the series? Or after the series comes to a conclusion, which producers hope won't be for a long time? So far, no other Star Trek series has filmed a movie during its current production. It was only after the conclusion of The Original Series and The Next Generation that films were produced.

Section 31 began production before Star Trek: Discovery ended, but its focus wasn't on the main characters who were currently filming and is a spin-off rather than a direct film representing all of Discovery. But that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of ways for a movie to be inserted between seasons of Strange New Worlds. Gooding and Peck have some ideas of the type of movie they'd love to see, including a crossover with the Kelvin Timeline.

Celia Rose Gooding: We’d have a lot of fun. I think there’s a world in which – I don’t know, I’ve had like fever dreams of us in the Kelvin universe finding a way to cross over. Ethan Peck: That’d be awesome. Celia Rose Gooding: (laughs) It’d be very weird to see them talking to Uhura, and then us being like, ‘Hmm, different. Very different.’ Ethan Peck: Well, Quinto’s Spock got to meet Leonard’s Spock, so… Celia Rose Gooding: I’d love to meet another Uhura. Ethan Peck: That’d be awesome. Celia Rose Gooding: That’d be super cool. Ethan Peck: Yeah, so maybe. Celia Rose Gooding: Maybe! Ethan Peck: Also, I think it’d be cool if we did like a Christmas movie. Celia Rose Gooding: I would love that! I would love that! That’d be so fun.

And in case we think a crossover between Strange New Worlds and a Chris Pine-led Star Trek movie would be weird, let's not forget that Star Trek: Lower Decks, an animated series, had a crossover with Strange New Worlds. So nothing is off the table when it comes to this series!

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds star Anson Mount discusses a possible retcon of his iconic character's tragic fate.

Per ScreenRant , Mount opened up about the possibility of a return via retcon during a Q & A session alongside fellow stars Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Celia Rose Gooding, Carol Kane, and Melanie Scrofano. When asked about his character Captain Christopher Pike's future in the series, Mount responded quite carefully, noting, " I have to preface this by saying what we think doesn't really matter. It's not our wheelhouse. It’s not our department." Mount added, "But I will say, we have not been with ourselves too specific about where we are in that particular timeline."

'You Can't Tell It's Me': Legend of Zelda Voice Actor on Star Trek: Discovery Cameo

Legend of Zelda's Patricia Summersett discusses her hidden cameo on the series finale of the beloved fan-favorite Star Trek: Discovery.

Mount continued, "Nor are we specific about how long a season is in fictional time. So there’s a lot of give and take. So, depending upon what the network wants, which we only find out year-to-year, as a project, for my own… I have much more specific ideas about it, but I don't want to say anything about it. But in general, I think I would like to stick with canon, and just, maybe, from a different point of view . Maybe from Pike's point of view. So that's all I'll say about that."

I have much more specific ideas about it, but I don't want to say anything about it.

Anson Mount's portrayal of Captain Pike kicked off with the series premiere of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds in May 2022. The series follows Pike and the rest of the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise as they were over a decade prior to the events of 1966's original Star Trek series. Alongside Mount, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds stars Jess Bush as Christine Chapel, Christina Chong as La'an Noonien-Singh, Celia Rose Gooding in Nichelle Nichols' iconic role of Nyota Uhura, and Paul Wesley as Captain James T. Kirk, a role made famous by original Star Trek star and Hollywood icon William Shatner. The series also introduced Ethan Peck's Spock , originally portrayed by the late Leonard Nimoy.

The Next Star Trek Series Has Officially Started Production

Production officially begins on the next entry in the long-running and beloved Star Trek franchise.

Fans Are Still Waiting for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3

Fans of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are currently eagerly awaiting the release of the series' third season which is set to premiere sometime in 2025 following delays related to the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Mount previously discussed what Season 3 has in store for audiences, noting that he believes it is going to be the show's "best season so far" in terms of storytelling, development, and its more technical aspects. Mount also promised an upcoming musical episode that, surprisingly, "will not be the craziest thing that we did or we have done by the end of this. We’re feeling more ownership over what it is that we’re doing and realizing that it continues to resonate."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is currently available for streaming on Paramount+.

Star Trek's Most Popular Show Is About To Rebuild TOS Canon

Will we see Bones and Sulu again very soon?

Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) and Mr. Sulu (George Takei) in "Shore Leave" in 'Star Trek: The Original...

With a possible reboot “origin story” feature film in the works and a new future-tense Starfleet Academy series focused on brand-new characters, the original 1960s continuity of Star Trek might seem very distant from the current franchise offerings. And yet, in Star Trek’s most popular show — Strange New Worlds — the canon and vibes of TOS are suddenly more prominent than ever. Going into Season 3 and beyond, it seems that Strange New Worlds is readying to redefine the backstory not just of Spock, Uhura, and Kirk, but the rest of the classic gang, too.

Speaking to multiple outlets, and as reported by TrekMovie , following San Diego Comic-Con, Strange New Worlds showrunners, cast, and crew have laid down quite a bit of information about what’s to come in Season 3 and, hypothetically, the already-greenlit Season 4. For serious Trekkies, the biggest development isn’t that Strange New Worlds will hint at or reference TOS a bit more. Instead, this prequel show is basically going to “drive right into” the start of the first Trek ever.

Scotty becomes a regular — Bones and Sulu next?

Martin Quinn as Scotty

Martin Quinn as Scotty in the finale of Strange New Worlds Season 2.

While many Strange New Worlds fans were probably aware that Martin Quinn’s take on Scotty would return for SNW Season 3, it was recently confirmed that Quinn would be part of the regular cast, not just a recurring character. (I.E. Paul Wesley’s James T. Kirk is not a regular cast member of SNW , despite appearing in three episodes of Season 2.) Scotty’s appearance at the end of Season 2 in the cliffhanger “Hegemony” was a well-kept secret in the Star Trek camp, which makes fans and pundits wonder if new versions of Hikaru Sulu and Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy are next.

While not confirming Bones and Sulu appearances in Strange New Worlds Season 3, co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers told Variety :

“These characters are not the people that they will become when we get to The Original Series . They are still younger. They are going through things. They have a lot of life and lessons to go through. They have some growth to do so you don’t see them exactly the way that you would see them later on.”

While the Prime Universe version of Pavel Chekov will be canonically far too young to appear in Strange New Worlds , Bones, and Sulu are very good bets. In two episodes of TOS , Bones works side-by-side with Dr. M'Benga, who in SNW is the current chief medical officer of the Enterprise . M’Benga was a guest character played by Booker Bradshaw in TOS , but Babs Olusanmokun’s performance has utterly redefined the character. So looking at the way SNW handles the rest of the legacy characters (like Paul Wesley’s Kirk and Celia Rose Gooding’s Uhura) is probably a good indication as to how a young Sulu and Bones could appear.

One fun canon note on Bones in Strange New Worlds : If he does appear, it could create a Deep Space Nine crossover. In the 1996 DS9 episode “Trials and Tribble-ations,” Jadzia Dax(Terry Farrell) insinuated one of her previous Trill hosts, Emony Dax, was romantically involved with Bones when he was a younger man. So via Bones, could we get a retro version of Dax?

How Strange New Worlds Could Become the new TOS

Kirk (Paul Wesley) and Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) in 'Strange New Worlds' Season 2

Kirk (Paul Wesley) and Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) strike a very classic pose in Season 2.

The biggest takeaway from the various post-San Diego Comic-Con interviews with Henry Alonso Myers and Akiva Goldsman is that Strange New Worlds is not shying away from its fidelity to The Original Series . Nurse Chapel’s former fiance turned-robot in TOS, Roger Korby, will appear in SNW Season 3, now played by Cillian O’Sullivan. Both Goldsman and Myers noted that his relationship with Chapel (Jess Bush) will be complicated in Season 3, and that “[he] is going to travel a long path before he gets to be the Roger Korby that you see in The Original Series .”

With Season 4 already in the planning stages, Myers and Goldsman know that they’re getting closer and closer to the timeline of The Original Series, around the year 2265. Season 2 of Strange New Worlds was firmly in 2260, which suddenly feels much closer to the classic era than Discovery Season 2 did when it introduced Pike (Anson Mount), Spock (Ethan Peck), Number One (Rebecca Romijn) and the Enterprise in the year 2258. So as SNW keeps going, even if fictional years don’t pass every single season, the showrunners are very aware that they’re inching closer and closer to that classic era.

Speaking to Collider , Goldsman said, “Left to our own devices, which really means if Paramount will, we’ll keep going into the TOS era.”

This notion that Strange New Worlds could overlap with TOS has a massive canon precedent. Chronologically, the very first regular episode of The Original Series (not counting the unaired pilot “The Cage”) is “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” which takes place in 2265. But the funny thing is, all the other Season 1 TOS episodes mostly take place in 2266, meaning that not only do we not know what happened in the years leading up to Kirk taking command of the Enterprise , but we also know almost nothing about what happened during Kirks’ first year, other than that one episode.

Outside of providing great standalone episodes of Star Trek, this detail is perhaps the most interesting for longtime Trekkies. Because at some point, Strange New Worlds could turn into The Original Series Year 1.

Or, as Goldsman told Variety, “We will continue on for as long as Paramount lets us. We will drive right into The Original Series .”

Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds both stream on Paramount+.
