Day 1 UK - Denver

Your journey through some of the most spectacular scenery in America is about to begin. After dropping off your bags and clearing security, why not treat yourself to a drink at the airport before boarding your flight to Denver. On arrival, we'll drive you to your overnight hotel.

Day 2 Denver - Rapid City

Your adventure begins in earnest today with a journey to Rapid City in South Dakota. On the way, we're going to stop at the former military and trading outpost of Fort Laramie. This is where Chief Red Cloud signed the treaty that gave the supposedly worthless Black Hills to the Sioux. Just six years later, Custer discovered gold in the Black Hills, prompting the Gold Rush and ultimately causing the Battle of Little Bighorn. There's a treat in store tonight as we head to Fort Hays Chuckwagon supper and cowboy music show located on the film set of 'Dances with Wolves'. Here we'll enjoy a hearty meal and some foot-stomping fun and entertainment.

Day 3 Mount Rushmore & Badlands

Your day begins with a visit to Mount Rushmore National Memorial, famous for its majestic granite sculptures of Presidents Roosevelt, Lincoln, Washington and Jefferson. Carved between 1927 and 1941 by sculptor Gutzon Borglum and around 400 workers, each face is around 18 metres high. You're also going to see the Crazy Horse Memorial, another monument carved into the Black Hills. An immense masterpiece that's still being worked on, it honours the heroic 19th-century leader of the area's native people.

The highlights keep on coming as we embark on an afternoon tour of Badlands National Park. Here you'll discover an eerie world of geological wonders that was carved over millions of years by the forces of nature

Day 4 Rapid City - Deadwood - Sheridan

You're heading into 'Wild West' territory today with a drive through the Black Hills to Deadwood, a town created on the back of the Gold Rush. The entire city is a national historic landmark and there's time for you to have a good look around. Maybe you'll visit Adams Museum and learn about the history of the Black Hills, browse the shops for souvenirs or enjoy lunch in a bar or saloon. We'll then head to Sheridan for the night.

Day 5 Sheridan - Little Bighorn Battlefield - Cody

The highlight of your day is a visit to the historic site of the Battle of Little Bighorn, fought in June 1876 between the US Army and Native American warriors. A guided tour gives you the chance to relive Custer's Last Stand and get a fascinating insight into one of the most famous conflicts of the American Indian Wars. Afterwards, you'll have a chance to delve deeper into the history of the battle with free time at the visitor centre and museum.

There's an inviting selection of restaurants in Cody, so after arriving at the hotel why not venture out for dinner. Your Holiday Director can point you in the right direction if you need a recommendation.

Day 6 Cody - Yellowstone National Park

After today, you'll be able to say that you have set foot in the world's first national park. Yellowstone is a wonderland of spouting geysers, hot springs, boiling pools and bubbling mud pots. On your tour you'll see the extraordinary Yellowstone Canyon with its waterfall twice the height of Niagara and, of course, 'Old Faithful', the famous geyser which erupts every 93 minutes or so. The park is also a wildlife sanctuary with bears, elk, moose and herds of bison all roaming freely, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for sightings.

Day 7 Grand Teton National Park

The next national park you'll tick off your list is Grand Teton. It's home to the Teton Range, a series of mountains that form part of the Rockies and stretch for 40 miles from Yellowstone National Park towards Jackson. The park is famed for its beautiful landscape of snow-capped peaks, lakes and glaciers and you can take in these exceptional sights today.

Day 8 Yellowstone - Salt Lake City

We'll head to Utah today for an overnight stay in the state capital, Salt Lake City. Founded by the Mormons, Salt Lake City is set on the shores of the Great Salt Lake and at the foot of spectacular mountains. When we arrive this afternoon, our first port of call will be the elegant Utah Capitol Building, which overlooks the city from a hilltop setting. Surrounded by manicured gardens planted with trees and shrubs, you can step inside to see the Supreme Court and House of Representatives with a tall rotunda in the centre. Be sure to look up and admire the painted ceiling of the rotunda, a celebration of the state bird, the seagull.

You'll then have some free time to explore downtown Salt Lake City. A good place to start is Temple Square, the area surrounding the Salt Lake Temple, a place of worship for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Here you'll discover a collection of museums, libraries and historic houses interspersed with gardens and monuments. As one of the world's largest genealogical libraries, the city's Family History Library is another interesting place to visit.

Day 9 Salt Lake City - Canyonlands National Park - Moab

Today we make our way to Canyonlands National Park, an incredible rugged landscape of canyons carved by the Colorado River. The Islands in the Sky district of the park offers expansive views of the spectacular canyon wilderness stretching for miles below. We'll make several stops to take in the magnificent scenery, so be sure to have your camera at the ready. Later we'll arrive in Moab for an overnight stay where you can take an optional sunset jet boat ride on the Colorado River. This scenic trip gives you the chance to view the red rock cliffs from the water and is followed by a cowboy-style dinner.

Day 10 Moab - Arches National Park - Cortez

Your next base is Cortez, which we reach via a visit to Arches National Park. This unfathomable red-rock landscape is home to more than 2,000 natural sandstone arches, giant rock formations and pinnacles. The story of this geological wonder dates back around 65 million years to when the sandstone sculptures began to form. Shaped by water and erosion the scenery evolved over time and is ever-changing to this day. We'll spend this morning exploring the park and you'll have the opportunity to get a closer view of one of the arches on a short walk.

Day 11 Mesa Verde National Park

Mesa Verde National Park is also within reach from Cortez, and it's where your tour takes you today. This archaeological masterpiece was once the home of the Ancestral Pueblo people and is famed for its well-preserved cliff dwellings. Centuries ago, thriving communities lived, worked and played in this rugged wilderness and we've arranged for a Local Guide to escort us on a tour of this fascinating site. One of the highlights is Cliff Palace, the largest cliff dwelling in North America with more than 150 individual rooms.

After our tour, we'll drive to Park Point, the highest peak of Mesa Verde National Park. On a clear day, the incredible view stretches for hundreds of miles over Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico.

Day 12 Cortez - Monument Valley - Grand Canyon National Park

Today we are heading to Monument Valley, instantly recognisable as the setting for many western movies with its wide-open spaces dotted with incredible sandstone monoliths. The park sits within the Navajo Nation Reserve and is said to be one of the most photographed places on Earth, with sandstone rock formations towering up to 300 metres tall. An optional tour narrated by an expert Navajo guide is available if you'd like to find out more about this fascinating destination and the heritage of the Navajo people.

Our journey continues with a drive to the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona and we'll catch our first glimpse of this iconic natural wonder this afternoon.

Day 13 Grand Canyon National Park - Kanab

As highlights go, the Grand Canyon is hard to beat, and today is the day that you get to fully take in the magnificence of this spectacular sight. This mile-deep, steep-sided canyon, carved by the Colorado River is a breathtaking sight however viewed, but an optional helicopter flight gives you the thrilling chance to see it from the air.

As we continue our journey to Kanab, we'll stop at the Native Grill and enjoy a traditional frybread taco. This food truck is run by a local Navajo family and supported by our Travelsphere Cares programme.

Day 14 Bryce Canyon National Park

There are just two more national parks to go now, and today you'll view the spires of rock, known as hoodoos, which form the unique geology of Bryce Canyon. The most iconic section of the park is a bowl-shaped area known as the Bryce Amphitheatre and we'll admire its beauty from a series of viewpoints.

Day 15 Kanab - Zion National Park - Las Vegas

A day of contrasts begins with a visit to Zion National Park, where you'll see mesmerising rock formations and sheer cliffs in shades of pink and cream. You've time to explore at your leisure and can use the park's free shuttle bus to discover highlights including the Temple of Sinawava, a natural amphitheatre carved by the Virgin River and surrounded by dramatic canyon walls. Equally as enthralling is your destination tonight, the man-made wonder that is Las Vegas. To appreciate the city in its neon-lit glory, why not join a sightseeing tour this evening.

Day 16 Las Vegas - UK

Spend today exploring Las Vegas at your leisure. Marvel at the epic buildings lining the famous Strip and watch the incredible dancing fountains outside the Bellagio. Try your luck in one of the elegant casinos or shop till you drop; the opportunities are endless! Later, we'll meet up for the final time and travel to the airport for our flight home.

After an unforgettable holiday, you'll arrive back in the UK today.

Today you begin your journey by boarding your international outbound flight to Rapid City. You will arrive at Rapid City Airport, then collect your hire car and make the short drive south to stay in Custer State Park for the next three nights. This way, you'll have a chance to thoroughly explore the area's natural and man-made wonders. We also offer accommodation in Rapid City for the night if you don't fancy driving straight off the plane.

Custer National Park

Custer State Park is surrounded by numerous attractions and activities in the Black Hills region of South Dakota. We highly recommend you set off early for a drive through the park, watching out for bison in the long grass. Some of the most scenic drives are the Wildlife Loop Road, Needles Highway, and Iron Mountain Road. There are also some fantastic hikes in the park and numerous large lakes for water recreation.

Mount Rushmore National Monument, South Dakota

Another day in Custer allows you to visit two famous monuments in the area, Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorial. The two are often visited in tandem to tell a wider story. For more information on the Native American creation story, be sure to visit Jewel Cave and Wind Cave while you are in Custer.

Mount Rushmore

Leaving Custer today, you may wish to visit the old Wild West town of Deadwood and Devil's Tower National Monument before continuing to Sheridan, which is around a three-hour drive, where you'll stop for the night. On arrival, take a leisurely stroll through Sheridan's historic downtown district, which is filled with charming shops, art galleries, and historic buildings.

Bighorn Mountains, near Sheridan

Leave Sheridan and continue north to the historic Western town of Cody, which is another three-hour drive. Stop off in Bighorn National Forest along the way and Antelope Butte Mountain Recreation area for some great hiking and scenic viewpoints. Once in Cody, step back in time as you wander through the authentic log cabins, saloons, and shops and learn about the town's connection to famous Western figures like Buffalo Bill Cody and Butch Cassidy. Be sure to invest in some cowboy boots or a hand-crafted belt or buckle, while here.

Old buildings at Old Trail Town Historical Museum, Cody

A highlight of the town is the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, which was originally founded in 1912 and comprises several distinct museums, including the Buffalo Bill Museum, Whitney Gallery of Western Art, the Plains Indian Museum, the Cody Firearms Museum and the Draper Museum of Natural History.

Cowboy at the Cody Nite Rodeo

Cody is the gateway to Yellowstone National Park, and your drive today takes you down the Buffalo Bill Cody Scenic Byway and into Yellowstone National Park. The scenery gets ever more spectacular as you approach Yellowstone Lake. Make sure you keep a lookout for wildlife that thrives here and the marvels of the geothermal landscapes.

Old Faithful Geyser Basin, Yellowstone National Park

Enjoy a full day in Yellowstone. Be sure to visit 'Old Faithful', the park's renowned geyser, as well as the colourful lakes, boiling mud and sulphurous springs. Keep your eyes open for an abundance of wildlife while in the park. In the evening, kayak on Lake Yellowstone with a small group and enjoy the serene ambience of the area as the sun sets over the lake.

Wolf, Yellowstone National Park

Drive north out of the park to the small town of Gardiner, which is the northern gateway of Yellowstone National Park. While in the park, there are plenty of scenic drives and points of interest for you along the way. One stop not to be missed is the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. When you arrive in Gardiner, there are fantastic natural hot springs, which are great for an afternoon of relaxation.

Grand Teton to Yellowstone

Today, you're up bright and early to join your experienced naturalist guide for a private, wildlife-focused tour of Yellowstone National Park. Your knowledgeable guide knows all the best spots to view wolves, bison, elk, smaller mammals and birds of prey. Wildlife sightings are, of course, variable, but your guide will show you how to use the best spotting scopes and give you tips on photographing these majestic animals, coupled with information on the history and geology of the area.

Yellowstone bear

Spend another day in northern Yellowstone, hiking in the park or exploring the region's geothermal wonders. There are plenty of great hikes in the Lamar Valley and scenic drives throughout the national park. We can also recommend visiting Mammoth Hot Springs to view these incredible natural spring formations.

Elk in Yellowstone National Park

Leaving Gardiner and Yellowstone National Park, drive north for around four hours to reach the university town of Missoula. The drive through western Montana is very scenic, passing some natural monuments, such as the Lewis and Clark State Caverns. On arrival in Missoula, there are many easily accessible shops, breweries, and restaurants. End the day with a sunset stroll along the Clark Fork River.

An old barn, Mission Mountains near Missoula, Montana

Leave Missoula today for the two-and-a-half-hour drive through Western Montana's Glacier Country. Along the way, the drive is exceptionally scenic and there's a chance to explore Lolo National Forest and Flathead Lake before reaching charming Whitefish.

Whitefish Lake, Montana

Embark on a private hike in Glacier National Park with your experienced guide. As the hike is for your group only, it can be fully tailored to your fitness levels. You'll begin by heading into the park and following trails with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Your guide will share insights about the park's ecology and history as you hike through Glacier's pristine wilderness.

Glacier National Park

Today is your own to explore Glacier National Park. Please be aware that this national park is subject to timed entry restrictions during the summer months, and it's necessary to speak to your Country Specialist about the possibility of securing these when you enquire. However, there are some parts of the park that are accessible without a permit through the east entrance. Alternatively, there is the option to add a Red Bus Tour to different parts of the national park if you would prefer a guided experience.

A mountain goat, Glacier National Park, Montana

Sadly, your Rockies adventure has come to an end. Depart Whitefish today and drive down to Kalispell to return the hire car and catch your onward flight.

Arrive home today to complete your journey.

En-route the tour will make stops at both Cheyenne and the former military and fur-trading outpost of Fort Laramie, which surprisingly, was never surrounded by a wall as the projected plans were deemed too dear thereby remaining an open fort depending upon its location and garrison for protection.

Today begins with a visit to Mount Rushmore, where 18 metre-tall sculptures are carved into the granite rock of Presidents Roosevelt, Lincoln, Washington and Jefferson. Completed between 1927-1941, this monument famously appears in Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest and was built to attract tourists from all of the country. Next continue to the Crazy Horse Memorial, a mountain monument which has been a work in progress since 1948. It is being carved out of Thunderhead Mountain and will depict the Oglala Lakota warrior, Crazy Horse, riding into the distance with his arm out-stretched illustrating the phrase 'My lands are where my dead lie buried', a tribute to the Native American people. This afternoon you'll tour Badlands National Park, whose rugged beauty draws visitors to admire the striking geological deposits that contain one of the world's richest fossil beds.

Today takes you to Buffalo nestled in the foothills of the beautiful Big Horn Mountains, with a stop en-route at Deadwood. Deadwood is an entire city registered as a National Historic Landmark that has been restored to its former historical glory and reminiscent of the iconic backdrops seen in Spaghetti Western films. Since the discovery of gold in 1874, it became a thriving commercial centre in the heart of the Black Hills that once drew legends and legions alike in search of their fortune. Stay overnight in Buffalo.

Depart Buffalo after breakfast and take a guided tour of the Battle of Little Bighorn, an armed engagement between Native American forces led by Chiefs Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull, and the US Army, gallantly won by the former in order to protect their precious gold reserves. The tour continues to West Yellowstone, where you will spend the night.

Enjoy a full day tour of the magnificent Yellowstone National Park, the world's first ever national park. Full of colorful hot springs, spouting geysers, bubbling pools and mud pots, Yellowstone is a wonderland of incredible natural scenery - be sure to have your camera at the ready to catch the world-famous Old Ye Faithful Geyser, a fountain of steam that rises more than 60 feet in the air. Explore mountains, forests and lakes and discover hundreds of species of mammals, birds fish and reptiles including bears, elk, moose and roaming buffalo. Retire to your hotel in West Yellowstone for your overnight stay. Please note: todays itinerary will be weather permitting in May and October, should the itinerary be affected, alternative arrangements will be made.

Following breakfast, drive onwards to Grand Teton National Park, a 1,300km reserve that boasts over two hundred miles of trails, pristine lakes, snow-capped mountains and extraordinary wildlife. Take in spectacular views before travelling to the valley town of Jackson Hole that was originally populated by indigenous tribes including the Shoshoni, Crow, Blackfoot and Bannock.

Breakfast & Lunch

Combining the amenities of a major metropolitan area with the friendliness of a quaint, mountain town, Salt Lake City is a beautiful vibrant destination perhaps better known as being the headquarters of the Mormon Church after Mormon forerunners fled persecution in Illinois and settled here over 150 years ago. Visit Logan Canyon, a canyon that runs through the Bear River Mountains where there'll be time to enjoy lunch al fresco (weather permitting) and admire the views through the valley that elevates to 2,400 metres.

After breakfast at your hotel, enjoy a walking tour of the city, Led by your Travel Director. You will hear about the Mormon history, beliefs and the meaning of a temple to them. Continue on to the Capitol Building with time to explore inside the building, thought of as one of the best places in the city. You will then have time to explore Temple Square further at leisure. The rest of the afternoon is for you to explore this wonderful city at your own pace.

Set out this morning on a scenic drive to Cortez, Colorado. Visit Arches National Park and discover a landscape of contrasting colours, landforms and textures. The park has over 2,000 natural sandstone arches in addition to hundreds of soaring pinnacles, massive fins and giant balanced rocks, all formed by the elements over millions of years - an incredible sight to behold. Spend the night in Cortez, a town that sits alongside the Trail of the Ancients Scenic and Historic Byway that circles through ancient Anasazi archeological, cultural and historic sites.

Today incorporates a tour of Mesa Verde National Park, offering a fascinating insight into the lives of the Ancestral Pueblo people who made it their home for 700 years in over 600 cliff dwellings carved into the rock face including the incredible Cliff Palace that has more than 200 rooms alone. Return to your hotel in Cortez for the evening.

After breakfast you will begin your journey to Tusayan, stoping en route at the Four Corners Monument, also known as Four Corners Tribal Park; the only unique landmark in the United States where four states intersect at one point - the corners of Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado meet a granite and brass monument marking the location. You will have the opportunity to explore the visitor centre as well as enjoy a spot of shopping with stalls selling handmade jewellery, crafts and food. In the afternoon you have an opportunity to take an optional excursion with a narrated tour (at a fee) to Monument Valley, a red-sand desert area on the ArizonaUtah border known for its towering sandstone hills and a popular backdrop for Western films. Stay overnight in Tusayan, a gateway town to the Grand Canyon.

Depart for the Grand Canyon National Park. Overwhelming in scope and size and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, this iconic natural treasure will leave you standing in awe and amazement at its sheer enormity and breathtaking beauty. The exposed rock at the base of the gorge dates back over two billion years thanks to the might Colorado river that weaves its way over 277 miles through the canyon. Continue to Bryce Canyon City where you will spend the night.

Distinctive due to geological structures called hoodoos, odd-shaped pillars of rock left standing from the powerful forces of erosion, there is no place quite like Bryce Canyon. Marvel at its unique geology, consisting of a series of horseshoe-shaped amphitheatres carved from the eastern edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau in southern Utah and feel the eerie atmosphere that the towering sorbet-coloured rock towers impose on walkers below. Return to your hotel in Bryce Canyon City for the evening.

Conclude your tour with a final journey to the city that never sleeps, Las Vegas. En-route visit the cream, pink and red sandstone cliffs and canyons within Zion National Park that when viewed from below provides an altogether different perspective than the Grand Canyon and the chance to spot one of the 900 different plant species not found anywhere else in Utah. Enjoy a frivolous evening amongst dramatic architecture, bright lights and kitsch entertainment on the world-famous Sunset Strip.

Transfer to the airport for your overnight flight back to the UK or continue on to your Las Vegas extension.

Popular US national parks

Us national parks travel faqs, what is the best time to visit national parks in the us.

The best time to visit a national park depends on what you want to experience on your trip. The US is a huge country with diverse weather, foliage, and wildlife. Most parks change quite dramatically from season to season. Our trips run all year round but spring through to early fall is the most popular time to go when the weather is mild, crowds are smaller, and hiking conditions are good.

What is mobile/cell phone service and internet access like in US national parks?

Mobile phone service, Wi-Fi, and internet access vary, and some parks will have coverage while others may be completely cut off.

Most visitor centers, lodges, and restaurants will offer free internet access, but it’s worth reading up on coverage or checking with your guide before your trip begins so you can be prepared.

  • Stand atop the monumental Grand Canyon, one of the Seven Wonders of the World
  • Uncover the gargantuan fortresses of Arches National Park (one of Utah’s Mighty Five)
  • Walk where the first men on the moon were trained at the Craters of the Moon
  • Visit the famous entertainment capital of the world - Las Vegas City

Start your Journey

San francisco.

On the first day of your National Parks Explorer Tour, you’ll arrive at San Francisco International Airport in the afternoon and make your way to your hotel. Settle in at the eco-luxury and eclectic Carlton Hotel only a stone’s throw away from the bustling Union Square. Take the afternoon to unwind in your room, enjoy the Californian cuisine at the hotel’s Saha Lounge or hit the ground running by exploring the lively neighbourhood. Your Tour Director will contact you in the evening, and will be on hand to answer any queries you might have and to guide you through your 14 day itinerary.

  • Suggested Accommodation Hotel Carlton

a large body of water with a city in the background

After breakfast, your tour through America’s best national parks starts with a private guided tour around the city starting with Union Square, a 2.6 acres square near the theatre district. Fashion lovers will be spoilt for choice in San Francisco’s shopping paradise with upscale department stores and charming boutiques sprinkled on every corner. Then, it’s time to visit one of the best known attractions in the western side of the USA at Fisherman's Wharf. Jump in a cable car, go on a fishing excursion, or sample some of the finest local and seasonal wines and beers at Altalena Vinoteca.

Enjoy a stroll down Sea Lions’ Marina to watch the fun and interaction displays and real sea lion skeletons. Before you leave, look out across the bay to Alcatraz Island - the infamous and notorious federal prison that was home to America’s Most Wanted. It was in this very prison that Al Capone, George “Machine Gun” Kelly and Robert “The Birdman” Stroud were incarcerated.

Alcatraz

San Francisco - Lake Tahoe - Sierra Nevada Mountains - Reno

On day three of your tour, start your day with a trip to Sacramento, the capital of the ‘Golden State’. You’ll stop in the riverfront historic district, Old Town, where cobblestone streets whisk you back in time to the 19th century. After exploring the quaint town, it’s time for a trip to the sapphire-blue Lake Tahoe, a splendid and scenic locale loved by both the town dwellers and visitors alike. Find long mountain trails, beaches, and restaurants all in the same place.

In the afternoon you’ll venture towards Virginia City, the wonderfully preserved Old West mining town frozen in time. Over 150 years old, the city is adorned with 19th century homes, steam trains and a wealth of fascinating history. You will feel like you’ve been teleported back in time here.

After a packed day of exploring, a short drive takes you to your hotel in Reno.

  • Suggested Accommodation Harrah’s Reno

a man riding on the back of a boat in a body of water

Reno - Black Rock Desert - Twin Falls

Leave Reno behind and journey through the wide Black Rock Desert, which is one of the earth’s largest and flattest surfaces. You’ll go on a short drive through the remote desert of rugged canyons and dried lakes along the Humboldt River, passing Elko and finally arriving at Twin Falls. In this gateway to Snake River Canyon, you won’t be disappointed when you find the majestic waterfalls. It’s been described as the ‘Niagara of the West’ and it’s easy to see why. This is a powerful, thundering 212-foot waterfall that you don’t want to miss.

  • Suggested Accommodation Red Lion Hotel Twin Falls

Craters of the Moon – Yellowstone National Park

Today you’ll leave Twin Falls and cross the Snake River or ‘The River of No Return’ - but don’t worry, it’s completely safe. Explorers misunderstood that the ‘snake’ in the name was a tribute to a Native American hand symbol. You’ll continue until you reach the Craters of the National Monument, a fascinating yet eerie preserved land of lava dotted with scattered ember. Explore this volcanic wonderland’s caves and lava tubes, scenic routes of cinder beds and surreal landscapes. It so closely resembles lunar conditions that the training for the first men on the moon took place on this very spot.

In the late afternoon, arrive at Yellowstone National Park, a unique wilderness recreational area in Wyoming. Walk among the pretty lush forests, alpine rivers and hot springs. Animal lovers will appreciate the wildlife here - lookout for bison, elk, and antelope.

Yellowstone National Park - Grand Tetons - Jackson - Salt Lake City

Your morning starts with a venture into the snow-capped mountains of Grand Teton Park. Explorers will love the alpine terrains and over two hundred miles of trails. Wildlife admirers will revel in sighting cougars, elk, the American black bear, wild buffalo and bison. Capture the stunning landscape of the majestic white mountains bouncing off the reflection in the sapphire waters.

You’ll then travel through southern Idaho to reach the famous Salt Lake City in Utah. Discover the historic architecture and the vivid art scene and Temple Square. Bring the afternoon to a close with an inspiring visit to The Tabernacle, which is home to the world-renowned Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square. Get lost in a timeless choir performance, explore the flowers and foliage of the 250 flower bed garden, or admire scale models of ancient Jerusalem. Head back to your hotel for the evening to unwind and reflect on the day. For impressive views over Temple Square, we suggest dining at the Roof Restaurant (optional), a premier and luxury gourmet style culinary spot - which will mark the perfect to end your day.

Salt Lake City - Canyonlands National Park - Moab

On the eighth day of your National Parks Explorer tour it’s time to head south to Canyonlands National Park. Spend the morning exploring an expansive wilderness and more canyons than you can count on one hand. Choose to delve deeper into one of the park’s four districts: The Island in the Sky, The Needles, The Maze and the two combined rivers. Expect a dramatic desert atmosphere and dark orange and red ravines for as far as you can see. It’s the perfect setting to appreciate the deep trails and lofty canyon views.

MOAB - Arches National Park - Moab

Today you’ll visit one of Utah’s Mighty Five, Arches National Park. There’s so much to explore here - over 2,000 enormous natural stone arches and hundreds of towering peaks that look like fortresses made for giants. In the early morning, sparkling rays of light pierce through the colossal red rock - you won’t take another photo quite like it. After you’ve explored what you can of the huge 76,679 acres Park, we recommend you take an optional tour with an exciting jet boat float trip on the Colorado River.

Arches National Park, Utah

Capitol Reef National Park

Today’s tour through America’s best explorer locations will take you to Capitol Reef National Park in the heart of red rock county. This hidden treasure was established just over 80 years ago to protect a fascinating and unique geological mishap - a Waterpocket Fold, which is a literal wrinkle on the earth. This beautiful park is bursting with huge cliffs, white sandstone domes and historic orchards.

  • Suggested Accommodation Bryce View Lodge

Bryce Canyon National Park - Lake Powell - Grand Canyon - Flagstaff

Discover one of America’s best national parks today - Bryce Canyon, a stunning reservoir on the border between Arizona and Utah. The park looks like a real life painting, with red rock vistas twisting and turning like snakes around deep-blue waters that shine, almost glistening. For an exhilarating cool off, dive from the cliffs that surround the lake into the waters. Depending on where you are in the lake, the water might be a rich deep-blue or a striking emerald-green. This is a picture-perfect setting wherever you find yourself.

Continue your afternoon with a drive through what explorers have named ‘the multilayer cake’ - the Painted Desert. This huge ‘desert’ is home to some of the earth’s most important formations caused by floods, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. You’ll arrive at the monumental Grand Canyon. Nothing can quite prepare you for the enormous landmark, with its colossal sandstone canyons against a backdrop of pine and fir forest. This mighty desert washed over with its bold orange and reds will simply take your breath away.

As the afternoon draws to an end, head back to your hotel and recharge for tomorrow’s adventures.

The rest of your day can be spent at leisure. See what the famous Las Vegas Strip has to offer - feast in one of the many fine dining restaurants, find a replica of well-known landmarks, such as the Eiffel Tower and the Egyptian pyramids, or indulge in a little retail therapy in the endless strip of designer and boutique shops.

Grand Canyon National Park

One of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, the UNESCO-listed Grand Canyon National Park is a phenomenal feat of nature. You’ll walk the rim and learn from your Local Specialist how it formed over the past 40 million years. From sunrise to sunset, the Grand Canyon is truly mesmerising.

Mesa Verde National Park

Located in Colorado, this UNESCO-listed national park is filled with centuries-old history. You’ll drive the Mesa Top Loop Road past archaeological sites and lookouts, and see the ancient cliff dwellings of the Ancestral Puebloan people, that are chiselled out of the sandstone canyon walls.

Arches National Park

We’ll take you on a journey through the spectacular sandstone arches of Arches National Park. There are more than 2,000 natural arches carved by the wind, including the long Landscape Arch. You can hike to the viewpoint of the iconic Delicate Arch and discover other formations such as Balanced Rock, soaring over the desert.

Yellowstone National Park

Discover the geothermal wonderland of Yellowstone National Park, one of the world’s oldest national parks. We’ll show you the steaming hot springs, alpine forests and rivers, the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, mud paint pots, and the remarkable shooting waters of Old Faithful. Keep your eyes peeled for animals like bears, bison, elk and wolves.

Yosemite National Park

Wander in the shadows of Yosemite’s giant sequoia trees, as our Local Specialists reveal the ancient history of these incredible forests. We’ll also explore Tenaya Lake and Tuolumne Meadows, before taking a special tour of the Yosemite Valley floor.

Our top 5 things to do in US National Parks

When you visit US National Parks with Trafalgar, we’ll show you the top national parks in the country, from the giant Grand Canyon to the ancient trees of Yosemite.

Buffalo wings

Found across the country, buffalo wings are one of the most beloved dishes in the United States. An unbreaded chicken wing is deep-fried and coated in a vinegar cayenne hot sauce with melted butter. They’re best served hot and dipped in blue cheese or ranch dressing.

Cheesesteak

Hailing from Philadelphia, the cheesesteak is now a classic American dish found across the country. It’s a sandwich made from thin slices of beefsteak and melted cheese, stuffed in a long hoagie roll, and it’s a delicious meal after a long day of hiking through national parks.

Also known as the ‘Yankee pot roast’, this is a braised beef dish made from slow cooking a piece of beef with gravy and vegetables such as potatoes, onions and carrots. The cooking method produces a soft, succulent meat drenched in rich gravy, for a warm and hearty meal.

Best food in US National Parks

Exploring the trails of the national parks works up an appetite, and we’ll show you the best places to taste all the famous dishes of the United States.

Hiking shoes

The National Parks of the US are filled with hiking trails, and you’ll need a sturdy pair of shoes to explore these spectacular landscapes.

Versatile clothing

From sun-drenched canyons to snowy peaks, the weather changes throughout the national parks. Come prepared for all climates with layered and versatile clothing.

Reusable water bottle

National parks are pristine protected areas, and whatever you take in, you must take out. Bring a reusable water bottle to avoid adding to waste with disposable plastic bottles.

A book to collect stamps

You can collect unique stamps at the ranger stations of each national park. Bring a notebook to keep them in, as a special memento of your journey.

The national parks are filled with incredible animals like bears and bison, and a pair of binoculars will help you spot wildlife safely from a distance.
