There are plenty of easy trails, most of which are at lower levels of elevation (for Colorado anyway!), so hiking is a great thing to do in Golden before you hiking at higher altitudes to help you get acclimated!

Our favorite place to hike in Golden is Golden Gate Canyon State Park . This park has several hiking trails of varying lengths and difficulty, from super chill hikes suitable for young children, as well as more moderate-to-difficult options. We particularly like the Raccoon Trail and the Blue Grouse Trail to John Frazer Cabin .

Pro Tip: Visit Golden Gate Canyon State Park in the fall to see the aspens turn their magical yellow hue!

Lookout Mountain Park and North Table Mountain Park are also great places to hike in Golden and are close to downtown. If you’re looking for more alpine and snow-capped mountain views, you should go to Lookout Mountain . If you’re short on time, head to North Table Mountain for views of the surrounding foothills, and, on a clear day, the Denver skyline.

This was one of the first activities Tim and I did in Golden. We had a great guide who was enthuasiastic and told us all about the history of the Coors family and the evolution of their beers. A highlight of the tour for us was visiting the brewhouse with its massive vats and machinery . The tour also includes plenty of samples , and we even got to keep the souvenir aluminum cups they served us with!

9. Visit the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave

Visiting the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave is one of the best things to do in Golden, Colorado to learn about the life of one of America’s most famous cowboys. The museum features exhibits about Buffalo Bill’s life and legacy, as well as a beautiful view of the mountains.

Located on Lookout Moutain , the Buffal Bill Museum features a variety of exhibits and displays that showcase Buffalo Bill’s life and achievements, as well as the history of the American West. Visitors can explore artifacts, photographs, and memorabilia from Buffalo Bill’s life, including his Wild West Show , which traveled across the United States and Europe, entertaining millions of people and shaping the world’s perception of the American West.

We also really enjoyed the short film that summarizes Buffalo Bill’s life and impact. It helped put the artifacts into context!

Tip: While on Lookout Mountain, don’t miss the Boettcher Mansion . This historic mansion was built in 1917 and features beautiful architecture amidst mountain views.

During the festival weekend, local businesses offer special pet-friendly packages, so if you travel with your pup and plan to visit Golden in February, be sure to check it out!

14. Dine in a Yurt at Sherpa House

The Sherpa House Restaurant is a unique and authentic Nepalese and Tibetan restaurant owned and operated by a Nepalese family who bring their cultural heritage and culinary expertise to the menu.

The atmosphere at Sherpa House is warm and inviting, with traditional Nepalese decor and cozy seating. The menu features a variety of dishes that are inspired by the Himalayan region, including popular Nepalese and Tibetan dishes such as momos, curries, thukpa, and tandoori . There aren’t many options for South Asian cuisine in Golden, but thankfully Sherpa House overdelivers with a unique and authentic atmosphere and delicious food!

Tip: Ask if there is any available seating in the yurt for a unique dining experience at the Sherpa House!

15. Grab a slice at Woody’s Wood-Fired Pizza

Woody’s Wood Fired Pizza is a popular wood-fired pizzeria located in downtown Golden, Colorado. This locally owned and operated restaurant is known for its delicious, authentic Neapolitan-style pizza and its warm and inviting atmosphere. It’s a local favorite , so get here early on weekends if you want to dine in! Otherwise, we recommend picking up a pizza to go and enjoying a picnic in one of Golden’s parks or along the Clear Creek.

16. Enjoy a fancy coffee at Windy Saddle Cafe

The Windy Saddle Cafe is a cozy and welcoming cafe downtown that offers a range of delicious breakfast and lunch options. What won me over, however, were the fun and unique coffee and espresso drinks they serve. My personal favorite is the Gold Digger , inspired by Golden’s mining history and made with espresso, caramel, chocolate sauce, whipped cream, and milk. It’s dessert for breakfast with a dose of caffeine!

The food menu at Windy Saddle Cafe features a variety of breakfast burritos , breakfast sandwiches , and quiches . Additionally, there is a bakery case that offers a range of fresh-baked goods such as muffins , scones , and pastries .

17. Get a Flight or a Growler at Barrels and Bottles Brewery

Barrels and Bottles Brewery is a charming craft brewery that offers a rotating selection of craft beers, as well as a selection of wine, making it a great spot for beer enthusiasts and non-beer drinkers alike.

Visitors can enjoy their beer flights and pints while sitting at the bar, at a table, or on the outdoor patio.

One unique aspect of Barrels and Bottles Brewery is their “Bottle Shop,” which offers growlers of craft beers and bottles of wines for purchase to take home. This is a great way to try some of their delicious brews at home or to bring a gift for a beer-loving friend!

18. Eat and Drink at Golden Mill

One of our favorite food and drink experiences in Golden is the Golden Mill . This fun and innovative food hall doubles as a serve-yourself brewery . When you arrive to Golden Mill, you put your credit card on file and they issue you a card to swipe at the food stalls and drink taps inside. It’s the easiest and most fun way to enjoy a variety of beers and sample food from several vendors. If you want pizza AND barbecue, you can have it at Golden Mill.

Overall, it’s a fun, laid-back, and social place to hang out and enjoy a few drinks and some bites. We especially love it in summer when you can sit on the patio and enjoy the views of Table Mountain.

19. Go to a concert at Red Rocks – or even a hike

Red Rocks Amphitheatre, in Morrison, Colorado, just a short drive from Golden, is one of the most iconic music venues in the world, known for its stunning natural beauty and unparalleled acoustics. The amphitheatre is surrounded by stunning red rock formations that provide a breathtaking backdrop for concerts and events.

Red Rocks has been hosting concerts and events for over a century, and it has become an iconic destination for music lovers from around the world. Legendary musicians have performed at Red Rocks over the years, including The Beatles, U2, and The Grateful Dead.

20. Brunch at Cafe 13

Cafe 13 is my favorite brunch spot in Golden . It’s also my favorite coffee shop to work from when I feel like a change of scenery from my home office! The cafe specializes in serving up delicious breakfast and lunch dishes, along with freshly brewed coffee and tea. I usually order their loaded avocado toast with a cappucino .

In the summer, a coveted spot on the outdoor patio at Cafe 13 is the perfect way to start the day. But, if you can’t linger, you can grab and go as well!

Tip: Colorado is famous for its green chilli , and Cafe 13 makes their own in-house. Enjoy!

21. Golden History Museum and Park

If you’re a history buff , you won’t want to miss the free Golden History Museum , located in downtown Golden. The museum features dynamic displays that showcase the city’s collection of 15,000 historic objects, as well as versatile programming spaces and a hands-on gallery for families with young children. The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m .

Near the museum and affiliated with it, you can step back in time and experience life as a homesteader at Golden History Park , formerly known as Clear Creek History Park . This historic site features original buildings from the Pearce Ranch , one of the largest ranches in the area in 1912. Stroll through the park and peek into real 1800s cabins, as well as other buildings from the ranch, including a barn, chicken coop, and two-seat outhouse. You can also visit the 1876 Guy Hill schoolhouse, which was moved to Golden in 1976. Admission is free, and the grounds are open daily from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m . Check out the events schedule to see when the buildings are open for visitors, and be sure to chat with the friendly volunteers who serve as interpreters within the historic structures. The park is located at 11th & Arapahoe.

23. See a Moon Rock at the Free Mines Museum

The Mines Museum , also known as the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum , is a fascinating destination for anyone interested in geology, mining, and mineralogy.

The museum features a wide range of exhibits that showcase the history of mining and geolog y in Colorado and beyond. Visitors can explore interactive displays that demonstrate the process of mining and mineral extraction, as well as learn about the different types of minerals found in the region.

In 1974, Nixon gifted each state and 160 countries with two “Goodwill” moon rocks from the Apollo 17 mission. One of Colorado’s moon rocks has been on display at the State Capitol, and the other was thought to be lost until 2010. Now it’s one of the most interesting pieces on display at the Mines Museum.

This is a particularly great activity to combine with Dinosaur Ridge , since the two attractions are nearby to one another and align with a similar interest in paleontology and geology!

26. Drive the Lariat Loop National Scenic Byway

The Lariat Loop is a 40-mile Colorado Scenic & Historic Byway that combines several smaller roads, including Denver’s Mountain Park system, to offer breathtaking views of the Front Range. The Loop starts in downtown Golden, where you can grab a coffee or picnic to go and begin your drive up Lookout Mountain, a 4.3-mile road that climbs 1,300 feet with drop-offs and viewpoints.

The road continues to the 7,379-foot summit of Lookout Mountain . The loop then heads to Genesee Mountain Park and the buffalo overlook, where you can see Denver’s herd of 40 buffalo and enjoy a snowcapped mountain panorama. 27. Bike the Clear Creek Trail

The Clear Creek Trail is one of the most beloved paved bike paths in the Denver metropolitan area and one of the best things to do in Golden! The trail spans 19 miles alongside the beautiful Clear Creek, starting in Clear Creek Canyon and ending at the South Platte River where it meets with another 40-mile paved bike trail. The route is shaded with trees for almost its entire length, offering a peaceful and scenic experience with the relaxing sound of rushing water.

As you ride along, you will be immersed in the history of the region, where the big gold strikes of Central City and Black Hawk were discovered in the mountains. The trail also passes by the Coors Brewery and the Colorado Railroad Museum.

Are you unsure of the best time to visit Golden, Colorado? To be honest, Golden is an awesome destination year-round. And I’m not just saying that because we live there!

The spring months in Golden offer mild temperatures and fewer crowds, making it the perfect time to explore the great outdoors without the summer heat. You can go hiking, and biking, and enjoy several other outdoor activities. However, the weather can be unpredictable, with occasional snowstorms and rain, and some tourist attractions may not be open until late spring.

Summer in Golden brings warm weather, long days, and plenty of outdoor activities such as kayaking, paddle boarding, and hiking. The town also hosts several outdoor concerts and festivals. However, it can get crowded, with long wait times and lines at popular attractions, and temperatures can become quite hot.

Fall is undoubtedly the best time to visit Golden. You can enjoy mild and comfortable weather and the stunning fall foliage for which Golden is famous.

The winter months offer beautiful snow-covered landscapes, skiing and snowboarding opportunities at nearby resorts, and fewer crowds. However, some attractions may have reduced hours or be closed altogether, and the weather can be cold and unpredictable. What to Pack for Golden, Colorado

• Day Pack:  It’s so helpful to have a good day pack to carry everything you need. I’ve had the  Osprey Skimmer 20 for Women  for years and it’s held up on every adventure! And here’s the  Osprey Talon 22 Pack for Men !
• Water Reservoir:  If your day pack doesn’t have a water reservoir in it already, you can buy one separately to slip into your bag. It’s absolutely NECESSARY that you bring water with you on every hike. Here are our favorite  2-liter reservoir  and  3-liter reservoir !
• Sun Protection:  This is so important year-round – even more so in winter when the snow can reflect the sun back up to your skin, multiplying your exposure!  Sun Bum  is our favorite  sunscreen  brand.
• Hiking Boots : I always hike in my  Columbia hiking boots . I literally have these in multiple colors because I love them so much! You can’t beat the price for the quality, too. Tim always hikes in his  Foxelli boots .
• Socks : I started wearing these double-layer  Wrightsock  brand socks when marathon training years ago and have never gotten a blister with them! In winter, I might mix it up with  merino wool socks , too.
• Sunglasses : I love these  wooden frame sunglasses , so they are my go-to.
• Hiking pants : These  hiking leggings  are my favorite in winter. In summer, I usually hike in  biker shorts  or leggings.
• Moisture-wicking layers : I wear this  pullover  all the time (it went around the world with us in 2014 and is still in great condition) and their  wool t-shirts  are great base layers. There are also  SmartWool t-shirts for men !
• Jacket : I always pack my  Columbia jacket  when hiking in the mountains.
• First Aid Kit : An  ultralight first aid kit  is a must-have for every hike. You never know what can happen, and you’ll be glad to have a  first aid kit  if you need one!
• Camera : I always hike with my  Sony a7iii . It’s a great full-frame camera for capturing all of our hiking memories!
• Snacks :  Clif Energy Bars  are our favorite hiking snack. It’s got the perfect mix of carbs, fats, and protein to power us through our hikes!
• Trekking poles : Many people like hiking with trekking poles to reduce the impact on the knees, especially going downhill. These  Black Diamond Trail Back hiking poles  are really popular!
• If you’re hiking Golden in winter, you’ll want to bring a pair of  microspikes  and/or  snowshoes  with you. These will slide over your boots and keep you from slipping on icy portions of the trail. Trust us, you’ll be able to enjoy your hike so much more if you aren’t worried about falling on the ice or snow!

Golden, Colorado

The Wild West is still alive in Golden,   Colorado's territorial capital until 1867. Upon arriving in Golden, you are welcomed with an old-fashioned wooden arch over Washington Street reading: "Howdy Folks! Welcome to Golden!"

Today, it's home to six museums;  Coors Brewery , one of the largest brewing facilities in the world; and a downtown filled with shops and restaurants.

The famed  Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre  is just up the road. If you're looking for outdoor adventure, Golden is also home to miles of hiking trails for all levels, some stellar rock climbing and Clear Creek, which runs through the center of town and offers whitewater rafting and excellent fishing.

With its secluded, small-town feel and plenty to see and do, Golden is a great day trip option from Denver.

Museums & historical sites.

Spend the day exploring Golden's fantastic museums, such as the  Colorado Railroad Museum , which has the state's largest collection of locomotives, cars, photos and historic railroad mementos; the  Golden History Museum & Park , where you can learn about the legends who built the town, see old cabins and a one-room schoolhouse, and feed the heirloom chickens; the  Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum , where you can see a universe of quilts from antique to artistic along with special exhibits; and the American  Mountaineering Museum , where you can walk in the footsteps of famous climbers from Colorado's 14ers to Mount Everest through interactive exhibits and high-tech displays. 

Or take a short jaunt up Lookout Mountain to visit the  Buffalo Bill Museum & Grave  and snap a stunning panorama of the Front Range. You can have a bite to eat at the café in the  Buffalo Bill's Pahaska Tepee . They serve buffalo burgers and Duffy's Rowdy Rootbeer. The  Mother Cabrini Shrine is a place of prayer and pilgrimage, known for the Stone House that's listed on the National Register of Historic Places and overlooks Denver. Mother Cabrini loved the mountains of Colorado and you can learn about her globe-trotting humanitarian work in the late 1800s and early 1900s. And if you really want to go back in time, don't miss  Dinosaur Ridge , a famous natural landmark, located near Morrison. It features famous Jurassic dinosaur bones, such as Stegosaurus and Apatosaurus, discovered in 1877, and Cretaceous dinosaur footprints. A guidebook is available for use on self-guided tours.

Craft Breweries & Distilleries

Grab a brew and some food truck grub at one of Golden's craft breweries like the unique gluten-free  Holidaily Brewing Company . Golden is home to two distinctive craft distilleries, State 38 Distilling , whose name cleverly has something to do with Colorado being the 38th state, and Golden Moon Distillery, which offers tours of its world-class facility. 

Coors Brewery

Take a self-guided audio tour (and sip some generous samples) at Coors Brewery , which churns out more than 13 million barrels of beer a year!

There are lots of great dining options. Here are a few standouts.  Nomad Taqueria & Beer Garden serves up traditional Mexican favorites like tlayudas, esquites, and chicharones and peppers. Chart House offers delicious surf and turf options from its hillside location. And  The Fort Restaurant is a full-size replica of an 1830s adobe fur-trade fort, serving buffalo, elk, quail, beef and poultry since 1963.

Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre

This outdoor music venue is on everyone's bucket list! Make the short drive from downtown Denver or take a shuttle to catch an unforgettable concert under the stars. And during the day, Red Rocks is a free Denver park with hiking trails amidst the ancient monoliths. During the summer months, the venue also hosts non-musical events ranging from yoga and fitness classes to movies shown on the giant outdoor screen at dusk. 

Lariat Loop

Drive the national scenic byway , with an authentic Western experience, located between Golden, Morrison and Evergreen.

There are lots of cushy places to stay in between adventures.  The Golden Hotel is located right in the heart of downtown and overlooks Clear Creek and the Rocky Mountain foothills. Also located in downtown is the boutique  Table Mountain Inn . For music lovers, it doesn't get better than the  Origin Hotel Red Rocks , the famous amphitheater's official hotel. Mountain bikes are available for guests to borrow. Another adventure-ready option is  The Eddy Taproom & Hotel , where stunning views meet striking brick buildings.

Locals Know

Golden is home to the Colorado School of Mines , one of the nation's top universities for engineering. Incoming freshmen whitewash the school's signature letter "M" on Mt. Zion at the beginning of each school year. 

Along the 1.5-mile gravel Triceratops Trail are several stops highlighting clay mining, as well as invertebrate tracks and traces of dinosaurs, birds, mammals and insects. Plus, there are several sandstone walls full of plant impressions from the tree-lined, delta-like environment. 

Explore Golden by bike! Check out a bike at Golden's Bike Library — located at the Golden Visitors & Information Center (1010 Washington Ave.), Thursday–Sunday from 10 a.m.–4 p.m., May–October.

“Howdy Folks, Welcome to Golden-Where the West Lives,” greets visitors on the large arch across Main Street in Golden, Colorado. Situated at the base of the Rocky Mountains just west of Denver, Golden is a beautiful town offering a range of activities that are sure to please all types of visitors.

Whether using Golden as a base to explore some of the incredible nature that surrounds the town or exploring the countless activities that abound throughout this historic town, no trip to Colorado is complete without a visit to Golden. Uncover more about the “Old West” with these things to do in Golden.

Year-round things to do

Golden is an ideal destination, no matter the season. From summer hikes and brewery tours to history museums and state parks, there is something to do every month of the year.

As is expected with any town this close to the world-famous Rocky Mountains, hiking is a popular pastime for locals and visitors alike. North Table Mountain , a mesa that rises above Golden to the north, provides many popular hiking trails, ranging from three to seven miles. At the top, the views of Denver to the east and Golden to the south are hard to beat.

For an easy hike in town, check out the Triceratops Trail . This one-and-a-half-mile trail winds through tall sandstone walls, featuring tracks from insects, mammals, and ancient dinosaurs. With its historic features and a gentle, flat trail, this hike is perfect for those traveling with children.

The Clear Creek Trail is another great hiking option for the entire family. This trail follows the path of the Clear Creek through the business district of Golden for almost two miles. It is also a part of a larger trail system that extends all the way to Wheat Ridge and parts of the Denver metro area. Enjoy a relaxing stroll that offers fun views of the kayakers and tubers enjoying the cool water of Clear Creek.

Tour the Coors Brewery

While in Golden, visitors have direct access to the largest single-site brewery in the world. Located in the heart of Golden, the Coors Brewery began producing its world-famous beer in 1873. For visitors hoping to learn more about Coors’ brand and history, the brewery offers a guided tour of the facility and grounds.

The Coors Brewery tour showcases the brand’s rich history through a collection of historical cans and memorabilia while also demonstrating the brewing and packaging process that goes into a famous can of Coors beer.

Local Breweries

For the beer aficionados visiting Golden, the town also features a variety of smaller, craft breweries like Golden City Brewery , a popular local spot that serves house-made beer, wine, and ciders. In fact, there are nine craft beer breweries in the town, many of which are located in the historic downtown. Also, just like the Coors Brewery, most offer tours of their facilities and brewing process.

Golden Gate Canyon State Park

Golden Gate Canyon State Park is a great way to escape to the Colorado wilderness without venturing far from Golden. With over thirty-five miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, Golden Gate Canyon is a natural oasis just a few miles outside of town and only 30 miles from Denver. The park also features over 100 scenic picnic sites, a variety of fishing spots, and even cabins and yurts for overnight stays.

After taking to the trails, visitors should be sure to head to the Panorama Point Scenic Overlook for a beautiful view of over 100 miles of the Continental Divide. Accessible by car or by foot, it is one of the most popular lookout points in the park.

Colorado School of Mines

One of the top public engineering schools in the nation, Colorado School of Mines is located in Golden, Colorado amid the city’s historical downtown district. Visitors are welcome to explore the scenic campus or visit the Mines Museum of Earth Science .

This free museum features a collection of over 60,000 items including a Moon rock brought to Earth by the Apollo 17 mission and thousands of other interesting geological specimens. Be sure to stop in at the gift shop where you can find a variety of unique geological items and gifts.

Golden History Museum

Just like the Mines Museum of Earth Science, Golden History Museum is another fantastic, free museum located in downtown Golden. However, instead of a geology focus, the Golden History Museum seeks to showcase the rich history of Golden through educational exhibits that highlight the key parts of the city’s past.

In addition to the indoor exhibits, the museum also features the Golden History Park, which is a 19th-century mountain homestead reproduction showcasing what life was like in Colorado in the 1800s. The Golden History Museum is a great spot for the history-buff looking to learn more about Colorado’s roots while supporting Golden’s local businesses. The museum is open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

Golden’s Historic Downtown

No visit to Golden is complete without a stroll through the city’s historic downtown. Enjoy an abundance of restaurants, breweries, shops, historical buildings, and the famous “Welcome to Golden” Arch. On nice days, visitors should consider checking out Parfet Park and Lion’s Park, which are two beautiful parks located directly in downtown Golden.

Clear Creek Whitewater Park

For those visitors who are proficient at whitewater canoeing and kayaking, a visit to Clear Creek Whitewater Park’s quarter-mile course is the perfect summertime adventure. Divided into three distinct sections that contain a variety of drops, eddies, and pools, this course is a great way to test whitewater skills directly in downtown Golden. There are no fees to access the course, so all are welcome.

It is unsupervised, and a high-flow season can make the course particularly dangerous for the unskilled kayaker or canoer. For a more leisurely experience, most of the intense whitewater can be avoided by choosing the right stretch of the creek. Tubers and paddlers of all skill levels are sure to have a great summer day by either floating the Clear Creek or tackling the whitewater course.

Scenic Drive on Lariat Loop

Granted the prestigious title of National Scenic Byway in 2009, the Lariat Loop is a beautiful 40-mile road that boasts hairpin turns, stunning views, and countless historical sites. From Golden, visitors have easy access to the five-mile Lariat Trail, the steepest portion of the Lariat Loop . Ascending 1,500 feet in elevation from Golden to the top of Lookout Mountain, the Lariat Trail leads visitors to some of the best views along the Front Range.

During Colorado’s gorgeous summers, a short trip to the top of Lookout Mountain is a great way to spend a morning or afternoon. Aside from the panoramic views, the summit of Lookout Mountain is also home to the grave of “Buffalo Bill,” a popular landmark to visit. On the way down, instead of returning down the mountain via the Lariat Trail, complete the entire 40-mile loop. It is definitely worth the drive.

Winter things to do

Winter in Golden is no time to stay indoors! Get outside and discover a new landscape of snowy terrain and ice climbs with these things to do in Golden during the winter.

Snowshoeing in Golden Gate Canyon State Park

Not just for summer hikes, Golden Gate Canyon State Park provides great opportunities for outdoor recreation in the winter as well. Hit the trails with snowshoeing. Snowshoe Hare Trail , a three-mile loop trail, is one of the best options for snowshoeing in the park. It passes by a small lake known as Dudes Fishing Hole, and it is a relatively flat and moderate trail that is ideal for snowshoeing.

Ice Climbing in Clear Creek Canyon

One of the top things to do in Golden during the winter is ice climbing in Clear Creek Canyon . There are three popular ice climbing areas: Coors Lite, Mickey’s Big Mouth, and Beer Garden. Beer Garden, which is just 2.8 miles up the canyon from Golden on US6, offers one pitch of climbable ice, while Coors Lite and Mickey’s Big Mouth both feature two pitches.

Visitors hoping to ice climb on a winter visit to Golden should always take proper precautions. Ice climbing is an inherently dangerous sport, so all must be prepared with the proper equipment and skills.

No matter what time of year, Golden is packed full of fun things to do! A short drive from Denver, Golden is an easy day trip for adventurers. Or make Golden a stop on your way as you head west. Either way, be sure to say “Howdy!”

Golden is a western suburb of Denver that’s the seat of Jefferson County.

For beer drinkers all over the country, Golden has been immortalized as home to the Coors brewery, and the city has also played significant roles in the settling and gold rush eras.

Golden’s location at the foothills of the majestic Rockies makes it the perfect place for visitors to stay; it’s equidistant between the state’s most amazing natural attractions, and historical, artistic, and cultural ones in Denver as well.

Finding things to do won’t be a problem, regardless of the ages and interests of those you’re traveling with.

Below are 15 things to do in and around Golden, Colorado .

1. Colorado Railroad Museum

Over the years, railroads have played significant roles in the history and development of Colorado.

The Colorado Railroad Museum is located on West 44th Avenue in Golden and is hands-down a must-visit attraction for history buffs and railroad enthusiasts.

The museum’s collection includes a variety of exhibits containing equipment, memorabilia, photographs, and firsthand accounts – as well as a historic rail yard that’s spread over nearly 20 acres.

Locomotives and an array of unique rolling stock are often the stars of the show, but consider checking out the welcome video inside first before setting off on your self-guided tour.

2. Coors Brewery

These days, Colorado’s beer scene is most well-known for its small craft breweries that can often be found in even small rural towns.

For much of the state’s existence, however, Coors was King, and it’s still a much-loved brand that’s enjoyed all over the country.

The Coors brewery in Golden is the largest single-location brewery in the world. For lovers of beer who want to get a unique insight into how it’s made, a guided tour would be a great way to spend a few hours.

Tours include tastings for those of legal age, and there’s lots of interesting historical memorabilia along the way as well.

For more than two decades, Café 13 has been one of Golden’s hot spots for those in need of sustenance after a long day on their feet.

The restaurant is located on Arapahoe Street and offers breakfast and lunch, as well as an in-house bakery, coffee, and a full bar with lots of beer, wine, and craft cocktails.

For those who’ve already eaten who are just in need of a bit of adult refreshment, happy hour specials are offered daily from 3 to 6 PM.

Café 13 has recently undergone significant upgrades that have made it even more contemporary and welcoming.

4. Golden Moon Distillery

When it comes to intoxicating beverages, Colorado is definitely most well-known for its abundance of beers produced by micro and craft breweries, but local distilleries have been making big waves in recent years as well.

Golden Moon Distillery is located on Violet Street in Golden and was founded in 2008.

They pride themselves on using only the highest quality ingredients, traditional distilling methods, and recipes that are centuries old.

Their products include gin and absinthe – the latter of which is a mysteriously green French liquor that’s said to have mild hallucinogenic properties.

Guided tours and tastings are regularly available, so check their schedule online.

5. Lookout Mountain Nature Center and Preserve

Located along the foothills of the majestic Rocky Mountains, Lookout Mountain Nature Center and Preserve is just a short drive from Golden, which makes it a popular day trip option for those looking to experience the mountains without spending hours in the car.

The center is spread over more than 100 acres and includes several interactive exhibits, as well as an extensive trail network, from which it’s common to see lots of wildlife and some fantastic views of the mountains.

Elk, mule deer, and foxes are abundant, as are tons of birds, including raptors, woodpeckers, and owls.

6. Barrels & Bottles Brewery

Folks in Colorado love their beer and dogs; for those who prefer to enjoy them together, Barrels & Bottles Brewery is the perfect place to do just that.

As you’d expect, Barrels & Bottles has an extensive beer collection that includes everything from crisp lagers to hoppy IPAs; their frozen wine drinks are big hits as well.

Previous guests have commented on their comfortable outdoor patio and ample space for canine guests. Unlike many bars, it has a low-key atmosphere in which it’s easy to meet other likeminded visitors without having to scream over annoyingly loud music.

7. Woody’s Woodfired Pizza

Whether you’re in Italy, New York, or Golden, Colorado, woodfired pizza is a tasty way to fill your empty stomach.

Woody’s Woodfired Pizza has been around since 1993 and is open every day from 11 AM until midnight.

Their pizzas are available with a number of toppings, and they also offer hearty burgers, spicy wings, and fresh salads.

For those who’ve spent a few hours touring the Coors brewery, Woody’s is a great post-tour stop because it’s just a mile away.

It’s also a popular place on game day, especially during football season when its big-screen televisions are showing games from around the country.

8. Boettcher Mansion

The Boettcher Mansion is a historic home that’s more than a century old, and it’s located on Colorow Road in Golden.

Built in 1917 with local timber and rock, it was the summer retreat for a successful and influential local businessman, who spared no expense in furnishing his opulent home.

The mansion has been preserved to near original condition and is full of historical information, furniture, art, and housewares that were the height of luxury by the standards of the day.

Self-guided tours are available on weekdays from 8 AM until 4 PM, and it’s a popular special event venue as well.

9. Clear Creek History Park

Golden has an interesting history that stretches back to the early days of the 19th century when the area was mostly wild and unexplored.

Clear Creek History Park is located on Arapahoe Street near the downtown area and features an impressive collection of historic buildings, including barns, cabins, and a one-room schoolhouse.

The park’s distinct areas are connected by well-marked paths that offer visitors the opportunity to stretch their legs and breathe lots of fresh mountain air while getting interesting insights into the area’s past.

There are also actors in period dress doing things like cooking and working in the blacksmith’s shop.

10. Buffalo Bill Museum

William Cody is a fascinating historical character that’s most commonly known as Buffalo Bill.

Cody was born in the mid-1800s when Colorado was wild, dangerous, and full of herds of wild buffalo; he made a name for himself by hunting them.

Buffalo Bill also founded his own theater production called The Wild West, which thrilled visitors with acts of horsemanship and harrowing tales of life in the wilds of Colorado.

The facility includes a museum that’s chock-full of memorabilia pertaining to the man’s life. Though he’s famous mainly for killing huge numbers of buffalo, his life is historically significant and warrants a look for history lovers with a few hours to spare.

11. The Cussler Museum

The Cussler Museum was founded by best-selling author Clive Cussler, a man who has always had an interest in rare and vintage automobiles.

The museum’s collection features cars from all over the world, most of which were built in the years between the turn of the 20th century and the ‘60s.

There are more than 100 automobiles on display; they’ve all been restored to near original condition and include brands that haven’t been in production for decades.

The museum is located on West 69th Avenue in nearby Arvada, and most visitors spend a few hours on-site before heading off to their next adventure.

12. Indian Tree Golf Club

With its dramatic changes in elevation and stunning scenery, Colorado offers golfers a unique experience that they won’t find elsewhere.

Also in Arvada, Indian Tree Golf Club is an 18-hole championship level course that plays more than 7,000 yards from the long tees, making it significantly longer than many of its contemporaries.

For those who’d rather not spend four or five hours on the links, there’s a 9-hole, par-3 option that plays just 1,100 yards.

The club’s amenities include a driving range, practice putting and chipping areas, a fully stocked pro shop, and a restaurant that’s open year-round – even when the course is buttoned up for winter.

13. Wings over the Rockies Air & Space Museum

For aviation aficionados visiting the Golden area, there’s no better place to spend a morning or afternoon than Wings over the Rockies Air & Space Museum.

The museum’s impressive collection of military and commercial aircraft is housed in a vast hangar that encompasses nearly 200,000 square feet and includes restored examples from almost every era in aviation history.

For those traveling with kids, there are a variety of interactive exhibits that are both engaging and educational. The docents that lead the guided tours are knowledgeable and enthusiastic.

Don’t forget to swing by the gift shop to pick up a keepsake or two before heading out.

Golden, Colorado, is one of the most underrated destinations to visit in the Denver area. Many of the best things to do in Golden Colorado are located near each other, making visiting with only 24 hours even easier.

When we moved to Denver, visiting Golden was actually at the top of our list. We have a soft spot for cute mountain towns , and our extensive research showed us that Golden was one of those places. So, one winter day, we made our way to Golden from LoDo.

Because of how much we loved our trip, we’ve rounded up the ultimate list of the best things to do in Golden Colorado so that you can have a great visit, too.

How to Get to Golden Colorado

There are quite a few ways to get to Golden, Colorado. The following modes of transportation are specifically for getting to Golden from Denver, but many of them can be applicable no matter where you’re traveling to Golden from.

The easiest way to get to Golden is by car. It only takes about twenty minutes from downtown Denver to get to Golden. The drive is easy, and the scenery gets more beautiful the closer you get to Golden because you’ll get closer to the beautiful Rocky Mountains.

Another option is to combine Lyft/Uber and the light rail. From Union Station, you can hop on the W train towards Jeffco and get off at Jefferson County Government Center – Golden Station. From there, order a Lyft/Uber to somewhere in downtown Golden, like the Table Mountain Inn. 

This may seem like many steps, but if you’re visiting the area without a car, it’s completely doable to get to Golden this way. In fact, on our very first trip to Golden, we used Lyft and the light rail because we didn’t own a car just yet.

How to Get Around Golden CO

The easiest way to get around Golden is to use your own two feet, especially if you plan on mostly exploring the downtown area. Many of the top attractions are near each other, which is why it’s so easy to walk.

Another option is to use a car if you happen to drive to Golden. Lyft and Uber are also other ways to get around Golden if you travel a bit wider in the area versus just exploring downtown.

Lastly, FlexRide is a choice for getting around. This bus has quite a few stops throughout Golden, making it easy to get around at an affordable price. Keep in mind that it’s not in use during weekends or on Sundays.

When to Visit Golden Colorado

Truthfully, there is no wrong time to visit Golden. Colorado is one state that has near-perfect weather no matter the time of year, which is a bit of a secret!

As you might have guessed, most people visit Golden during the summer. The weather during this time can get pretty hot, averaging the high 80s. Try visiting during another time of year because this is considered peak season if you can avoid it.

Winter is a great time to visit if you want to do winter adventure sports. Golden usually gets quite a bit of snow during the winter and the temperature averages around 44°F.

Spring and fall can also be great times to visit if you can get the time off! Spring and fall temperatures are around 60°F.

Where to Stay in Golden Colorado

Because Golden isn’t a large city, there aren’t many places to stay here. Luckily, there are still some great places worth staying.

Table Mountain Inn

The best place to stay in Golden is the  Table Mountain Inn ! It’s located directly in downtown Golden, and if you’re lucky, you’ll even have a room with a balcony with great views of Lookout Mountain.

This can be a pricier hotel, with nightly rates averaging between $200 and $300 a night, depending on the room type you choose to book. What makes this hotel even better is that it has its own cantina with fantastic food (speaking from experience!). The quesadillas are to die for.

The Silk Pincushion

For more homey accommodation, you could consider staying at  The Silk Pincushion . Prices start at around $150 a night, and no room costs more than $200 (depending on the time of year).

The Silk Pincushion is a bed and breakfast with strong Victorian vibes. It tends to be a great place to stay if you’re traveling with just two people, making it an excellent accommodation for a romantic getaway in Golden. This bed and breakfast is not that far from Coors Brewery or Dinosaur Ridge.

Hampton Inn Denver – West/Golden

Another option for accommodation is the  Hampton Inn . It’s about three miles from downtown Golden and has a lot of room options. Some of the rooms can even host up to five guests at a time. If you’re traveling with a large group, this could be an excellent place for you to stay!

Rooms range in price between $200 and $220, depending on the time of year. Breakfast is included, and every room includes a microwave, refrigerator, and coffee maker. Plus, there’s a gym that all guests are allowed to use.

One day in Golden Colorado is the perfect amount of time to explore the town, especially if you’re a first-time visitor! If you plan your day wisely, you’ll easily have an unforgettable trip.

Grab breakfast from a local shop

Because Golden is a small town, there are many different local places to eat! Luckily, this itinerary includes many of them.

Start your day out right by grabbing a coffee from  Higher Grounds Cafe . It’s located near downtown Golden, and it’s one of the most popular coffee shops in town for both locals and tourists. 

They also have delicious cafe treats like donuts, scones, and more. Plus, Higher Grounds Cafe opens early, around 5:30 a.m., so no matter what time you start your day, they’ll probably be open.

For a more sit-down type of breakfast, consider heading to  The Golden Diner . They offer almost any kind of breakfast you can think of, including pancakes, waffles, eggs, and even breakfast burritos.

Hike Lookout Mountain Nature Center

Like there are many  free things to do in Denver , there are also free things to do in Golden. Hiking Lookout Mountain is easily one of the best free things to do here.

After filling your stomach with delicious local breakfast food, head over to Lookout Mountain and be prepared to get one of the best views in the entire town! No visit to Golden is complete without hiking up at least one trail on Lookout Mountain.

Arguably the easiest trail to hike on Lookout Mountain is the  Windy Saddle Trail . This trail is only about 4.5 miles long, and the elevation gain is a little more than 700 feet. It’s ranked as a moderate trail but can become more difficult if you happen to hike after it rains because the path is prone to getting muddy. Overall, this trail will take, on average, between two and three hours to hike.

If you’re not a fan of hiking, consider going for a walk along the Clear Creek Path. This is a lot easier, but it is still very calming and has excellent views along the way. Visiting this area is one of the best outdoor activities in Golden!

Eat lunch at a local restaurant

Similar to breakfast, there are a lot of great places to eat locally for lunch. Here are a few of the top-rated options!

Bonfire Burritos  is the perfect place to go to try delicious Colorado burritos. Make sure you order one with green chile, which is a local delicacy. There isn’t a lot of outdoor seating here for you to enjoy the weather, but there are many seats inside.

For an A+ burger, head to  Bob’s Atomic Burgers . This restaurant offers tons of burgers, hot dogs, and more. Plus, no burger is complete without a side of fries and a milkshake, which also are on the menu.

Woody’s Pizza  is the top-rated pizza place in the area and is one of the best restaurants in Golden. There’s tons of outdoor seating, and it’s been a Golden staple for twenty years and counting. Plus, there are tons of pizza choices, so even if you’re a picky eater, you’ll be able to find something for yourself on the menu.

Go on a Coors Brewery Tour

A trip to Golden Colorado isn’t complete without going on a  tour of Coors Brewery . Luckily, there’s a shuttle that will bring you from downtown right to the brewery, so you can still go on the tour if you aren’t traveling with a car.

Tours are usually only during the afternoon, so make sure you hop in line ASAP. If you can book tickets ahead of time, make sure to do so!

Learn at the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave

Because of Golden’s Old West heritage, you’ll have to make sure you head over to  Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave . It’s filled with exhibits about William F. Cody (also known as “Buffalo Bill”) and has been open for 100 years as of 2021.

The museum isn’t massive, so it won’t take a lot of time to explore. However, it’s still well worth it to go in and at least spend an hour or two learning more about the local history while visiting Golden.

Explore downtown Golden

Before you grab dinner and get ready to wind down for the evening, head to historic downtown Golden! This is where you can find most shops, restaurants, cafes, and more. Even if you’re just window shopping, this is a super fun place to explore.

While you’re in downtown Golden, make sure you take a photo with the giant “Welcome to Golden” arch sign that crosses over the road. It’s pretty iconic and looks great in photos.

Eat dinner at another local restaurant

After exploring downtown Golden, you’re probably ready for dinner! Here are a few of the best restaurants for dinner in the area.

Buffalo Rose  doubles as a restaurant and an entertainment spot, making it the perfect place to grab a bite to eat. It opened in 1858 and has been a staple in Golden ever since. The menu is filled with cocktails, sandwiches, salads, and more. There’s also a kid’s menu in case you’re traveling with children.

We ate here once when family visited and loved the atmosphere inside. KP ordered a chicken Caesar salad that she absolutely loved.

Another great place to grab a bite to eat is the  Table Mountain Cantina ! If you happen to be staying at the Table Mountain Inn, you’re in luck; the restaurant is located inside the hotel. There’s indoor and outdoor seating. 

If there are spots outside, definitely ask to be seated there. You’ll be rewarded with great views of Lookout Mountain. The menu here includes many great Mexican dishes, including quesadillas, tacos, and more.

Are you traveling with picky eaters, or do you want to have more options when dining? Go to  Tributary Food Hall . There are around ten different vendors inside, with foods including gyros, poke, pizza, pasta, bbq, and more. Plus, there’s a gelato shop and a crepe place so that you can grab dessert right after!

Finish the night with drinks

There’s no better way to finish the night and your 24 hours in Golden Colorado than by heading to a local joint to grab a drink. This is one of the best things to do at night in Golden.

If you want a place that will bring you back in time, head to the  Miners Saloon . They have tons of drinks, and the inside will immediately take you back in time to when the city was home to lots of miners.

Golden Moon Speakeasy  is another excellent place to grab a drink in downtown Golden. They have tons of cocktails, and the interior is gorgeous with tons of fun fairy lights and a speakeasy vibe.

As you can see, there are tons of great things to do in Golden. No matter what time of year you’re visiting, you’ll have a memorable experience here.

The Best Itinerary For A Day in Golden, Colorado

Looking to spend a day in golden, colorado, but not sure how to make the ultimate itinerary don’t fret .

Well known as a picturesque town nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Golden offers its visitors breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks and endless activities to enjoy. 

From hiking trails and rock climbing routes to craft breweries and art galleries, there’s no shortage of things to do when visiting Golden. 

After spending a summer exploring some of the most unique towns in the state, I’ve partnered with Emily at Sea to Summit Alaska and we’ve created the perfect one-day itinerary for you to get the most out of Golden.

Now, with just one day to explore one of Colorado’s best tourist towns , you’ll want to be semi-precise with your timing.

Of course, if you simply want to get some brunch and stroll your way through town before hitting the Coors Factory, that’s an option.

But, if you’re hoping for an outdoor adventure perfectly balanced with some of the best eats in the city, then keep reading.

Morning in Golden

Eat Breakfast at The Golden Diner

I didn’t mean to bash on brunch… so, to start your day off right, head to The Golden Diner on 12th Street . Famous for its pancakes and breakfast burritos, this cozy diner offers a range of classic American dishes.

Kayak at Clear Creek Water Park

Afterward, make your way to Clear Creek Water Park , which is the perfect spot for tube and kayak rentals (and even paddleboards)! Whether you’re an experienced rafter or simply want to take in the views while floating down the river, there are plenty of different outings available.

The best time to visit the creek is in the morning when it’s less crowded and the brutal heat of the summer months hasn’t kicked in yet. 

By mid-afternoon, you’ll be playing adult “bumper rafts” with hundreds of other people trying to enjoy one of Golden’s finest features.

Coors Factory Brewery Tour

As for the afternoon, you’re in for a real treat! While everyone else is still wading in Clear Creek, head over to the Coors Factory for a brewery tour where you can escape the heat of the day in air conditioning with a nice, cold brew in hand.

For $10-20 a person (discounts available), you’ll receive a guided tour of the production facility and even get to sample some of their best brews. Plus, you get to keep the metal cups as souvenirs to commemorate your trip! 

Easily one of the most popular things to do in Golden, Colorado, even those who typically turn their noses to beer will enjoy this iconic tour.

Explore Downtown Golden

Now with a slight buzz in your system, it’s time to explore Golden’s vibrant art scene. Take a stroll down Washington Avenue and explore some of the funky galleries, vintage shops, and hip pubs that line the street.

Blue Moose Trading Company is the perfect spot to pick up souvenirs while nearby Duluth’s Trading Co. is the ultimate spot for your last-minute fly-fishing trip.

Snap Photos at Lookout Mountain

Before you head to dinner, take a drive up to Lookout Mountain and admire the breathtaking views of the city below. This is one of Golden’s most popular attractions and it always makes for an amazing photo-op. 

Wanderful Tip: You may think you should save this outing for sunset, but this is when it will be at its busiest! Either get up at the crack of dawn to watch the sunrise or opt to visit mid-day when you’ll have the mountaintop practically to yourself.

Eat Dinner at The Golden Mill

For dinner, you can’t go wrong with The Golden Mill over on Ford Street. This classic Colorado eatery offers a range of locally-sourced dishes with a modern twist. 

Enjoy their famous house-made tacos or their succulent beef brisket that’s been smoked for 14 hours among other farm-to-table favorites while taking in the rustic ambiance of this historic landmark.

Plus, offering gorgeous views of the city and the nearby Flatirons (what the locals have named the mountains surrounding the Golden area), this well-equipped bar also offers two self-pour tap walls where you can pour yourself any beer you want to enjoy your meal with. Pretty cool, right?

Enjoy a Cocktail at atōst

All that’s left to do is to top your night off with the perfect, locally-made cocktail at atōst ! A personal favorite in the city of Golden, this unsuspecting high-end cocktail bar is found in a warehouse on the edge of town. 

Less than a 15-minute ride away, you’ll be reminiscing on your favorite activities from spending a day in Golden, Colorado in style!

How to Get to Golden, Colorado

When it comes to getting to Golden, you have several options. From local buses to rideshare apps and nearby international airports, these are the best ways to get to Golden.

Flying into Denver

Now, for most of us, unless you’re coming from a bordering state such as Utah or New Mexico , you’re likely going to need a flight to get there. 

Fortunately for travelers, Denver International Airport happens to be one of the biggest hubs in North America for international travel, offering numerous routes from major airlines including JetBlue, Delta, American, and so many others.

Travel by Bus

Once you arrive, you’ll need to find your way to Golden. Luckily, there are plenty of options and the journey is very simple and relatively unintimidating. 

If you’re on a budget, then the bus will be the best option. Line 16 travels from Colfax Ave & Broadway directly to the popular Washington Ave in downtown Golden in just over an hour for typically around $3-6 per person.

Travel by Train

The second cheapest option is the train which departs directly from Union Station in downtown Denver and brings you to Golden. 

However, both of these options would require you to get into Denver first, so if you aren’t comfortable with figuring out multiple modes of transportation, then your best bet is to book an Uber or Lyft.

Travel by Rideshare

These rideshare services are in an abundance at the Denver Airport, and you’ll be able to choose your ride as soon as you land via their respective apps. 

Plus, you can have the driver drop you off right at your accommodation, saving you the hassle of finding your way on foot to your hotel with all of your belongings should you simply arrive at the local bus station in Golden.

If you’re only spending a day in Golden, Colorado, then it is suggested to budget a little bit of extra money to save all the time you can. 

Sure, the rideshare services will be more expensive, but they’ll also remove the stress of navigating the public transportation system and save you tons of time on travel.

When it’s time for the return trip from Golden to Denver, the options are the same as getting there. It’s worth noting that the bus runs more frequently during rush hour and the train is usually a bit faster if you’re trying to stay on a budget.

Either way, you’ll be able to get back to Denver with ease after your fun-filled day in Golden!

When to Visit Golden, Colorado

The best time to visit Golden, Colorado is on either side of the summer months from late spring (April through May) to early fall (September through early November) . 

The temperatures in the area remain mild and pleasant, making it ideal for outdoor breweries, food trucks, window shopping, and more.

Plus, during this time, there are plenty of events happening throughout the city including the Golden Fine Arts Festival and endless concerts and comedians at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheater that will make your stay even more enjoyable.

While Golden does offer some winter activities as well, such as skiing at nearby ski resorts, it’s best to avoid visiting during late fall and early winter due to short daylight hours and icy roads. 

Some businesses also close in the winter, so if you want to see Golden in full swing (like it is during its participation in the annual Buffalo Bill Days), then between the spring, summer, and fall is the best time to visit.

That being said, if you plan on taking a trip to Golden during any other time of the year, be sure to pack accordingly. 

Temperatures can dip into the single digits at night, and with the mountains so near, it’s always best to be prepared for whatever type of weather might come your way.

No matter what time of year you decide to visit Golden, you can rest assured that you’ll find plenty of great things to do while you’re there like exploring all the local attractions to shopping in unique boutiques.

Park in the free lot, and let the volunteers tell you what will be going on while you're in town and point you toward downtown businesses, the American Mountaineering Center , Clear Creek RV Park , Clear Creek History Park , picnic areas and parks, bicycle trails and other attractions within easy walking distance from the visitors center. You can also pick up directions to museums, restaurants, shops and lodging, along with various coupons and brochures to enrich your visit.

Tourist attractions, including MillerCoors Brewery tours , Buffalo Bill's Museum and Grave and the Colorado Railroad Museum , among others, attract an estimated 2.5 million visitors to the Golden area each year.

If you are planning a trip to Golden and don’t want to miss any of the must-sees but also don’t want to spend the earth, then keep reading to find out the best things to do in Golden CO – all of them free or inexpensive!

Golden is a sweet mountain town in Colorado that has lots of character, a fun gold rush history, and lots of natural beauty. It is nestled in a river valley at the base of the iconic Rocky Mountains and is surrounded by small mountains that are perfect for hiking . 

It is only a twenty-minute drive from Denver but it feels like you are a world away – so it’s no wonder that it is such a popular day trip destination. Golden is deserve dly popular and I always recommend people add Golden to their Denver Itinerary . – it is one of the best neighborhoods in the Denver area .

But there are so many things to do in Golden that you should stay longer if you can – you won’t regret it.

I put together a list of my favorite things to do in Golden CO that covers the best of what this beautiful town has to offer, from hikes and bike riding through to brewery hopping and delving into the town’s history.

I am a budget traveler so all of these experiences are free or inexpensive so you can stick to a lower budget while still having an awesome time in Golden.

I think there is something for everyone on this list, and I hope to inspire you to spend a couple of days or more in sweet Golden.

1. Hit the Hiking Trails

Hiking is my favorite thing to do in Golden and there are so many different hikes to choose from, starting with a flat and easy meander beside Clear Creek through to more difficult but rewarding hikes up some of the nearby mountains.

If you do one thing in Golden, make sure it is a hike, because this is the best way to experience the natural beauty of the area. Enjoy wildflowers everywhere in spring and early summer, and fall brings gorgeous golden trees.

2. Go Shopping

Golden may have a relatively small downtown core but there are a surprising number of great shops that you should definitely check out including gift shops, antiques, boutiques, consignment stores, outdoor gear, and more. 

My favorites are Rewind Consignments for gently used unique clothing, YoColorado for beautifully designed Colorado apparel and gear with a retro vibe, Marrygrams Cards and Gifts – I love their stickers, and Blue Moose Trading Company for fun Colorado souvenirs .

3. Do Some Brewery Hopping

Golden’s most famous brewery may be Coors but it is definitely not the only one, and it is definitely not the best. For a small place, Golden is home to a lot of breweries so if you love beer as I do, you definitely have to visit at least a couple of them.

As well as serving excellent quality beer, the other thing that is great about Golden’s breweries is that most of them are within walking distance of each other, so if you are staying in or near downtown Golden, you don’t have to worry about drinking and driving.

My absolute favorite is New Terrain Brewing Company , which is a little out of town but so, so worth it. I would recommend driving there first for one of their flights in their sunny beer garden and maybe lunch at one of the two rotating food trucks, then drive back to your accommodation downtown to walk to more. 

The best breweries in downtown Golden are Mountain Toad Brewing and Golden City Brewery , and I also like Barrels and Bottles Brewery and Cannonball Creek Brewing Company . The Eddy Taproom and Hotel is also a great spot with views over the town and a great beer and cocktail menu.

Hopping between these breweries on a sunny day with friends is one of the absolute best things to do in Golden CO!

4. Eat at the Best Golden Restaurants

Along with breweries, Golden is also home to some fantastic restaurants – this is even more true in the last few years with the opening of Tributary Food Hall and The Golden Mill – also a food hall with the best roof terrace in town, with river and mountain views. 

Other notable restaurants that you should try to eat at during your Golden trip are:

Sherpa House – A Tibetan restaurant and culture center that is super cozy inside and has a very affordable lunch buffet as well as an A La Carte menu with Nepalese, Tibetan, and Indian options.

Woody’s Wood Fired Pizza – Another great affordable buffet option with agreeable pizza and amazing beer cheese soup. This is a popular spot with families.

Bob’s Atomic Burgers – Basic but very well-made burgers in retro digs right by town – I especially love their fried chicken burger.

Bonfire Burritos – Awesome burritos including a massive breakfast burrito with green chile – mmm.

Humble Cafe – New to Golden in 2023, Humble Cafe is a coffee house that also serves a range of breakfast sandwiches, liege waffles, sandwiches, and salads.

Atomic Cowboy – Another recent addition to the Golden dining scene, Atomic Cowboy is a food hall/restaurant that is home to small Colorado chains Denver Biscuit Company for incredible breakfasts and Fat Sully’s for NY-style pizza.

Blue Pan Pizza – Another local chain that recently opened on the outskirts of Golden, Blue Pan Pizza does excellent Detroit-style pizza.

5. Go Tubing in Clear Creek

One of the most adventurous things to do in Golden is to go tubing in Clear Creek. There are lots of rapids in the section that runs through town but none that are too scary – well, they are just the right amount of scary.

You can either take your own tube or rent or buy one in town. The best time to go tubing in Golden is in mid to late summer – spring and early summer see dangerously high water levels and the creek is usually closed to tubing during this time.

If tubing is a bit too crazy for you, maybe just swim in the river. There are numerous spots where you can get in for a swim without being caught up in the rapids.

Relax and dry off on the rocks or make a day of it with a picnic in Lions Park or Parfet Park by the river.

6. Feed Your Mind at a Local Museum

Golden is home to numerous museums and you should definitely visit at least one of them if you are interested in learning more about the history of the area. Here are the main museums in the area that you can visit:

Golden History Museum – This museum by the Visitor Center is free to enter and although small, it is worth visiting to find out more about the history of the town of Golden. 

Colorado Railroad Museum – I haven’t been to the Railroad Museum but it is on my list. There are over 100 engines, cabooses, and coaches in this 15-acre rail yard, and they even do train rides behind a vintage steam locomotive throughout the year.

American Mountaineering Museum – My favorite museum in Golden because I have a bit of an obsession with everything mountain climbing. The last time I went, there was a great movie playing with Tommy Caldwell (The Dawn Wall) and Alex Honnold (Free Solo) climbing Patagonia’s Fitz Traverse.

Buffalo Bill Museum – Even if you don’t have a great interest in Buffalo Bill Cody or know much about his life, I think this museum on top of Lookout Mountain is still so worth visiting. It chronicles Buffalo Bill’s life and his famous Wild West Show, with lots of information and artifacts on display as well as a film that plays on a loop.

7. Visit Buffalo Bill’s Grave and the Boettcher Mansion on Lookout Mountain

While you are visiting the Buffalo Bill Museum, don’t miss visiting Buffalo Bill’s gravesite and the Boettcher Mansion – also at the top of Lookout Mountain and linked by short hiking trails.

Buffalo Bill’s grave is pretty unassuming to look at, but there was a lot of fanfare and controversy when Buffalo Bill Cody was buried on top of Lookout Mountain in 1917.

The famous showman lived in Wyoming for a long time and the town of Cody, Wyoming was even named after him as he was one of the founders.

There was a lot of uproar from Cody about Buffalo Bill being buried in Colorado, and the grave ended up having to be encased in concrete to stop bodysnatchers from Wyoming from stealing it away.

The Boettcher Mansion is a gorgeous example of the Arts & Crafts style in 1917 and was the summer home and hunting lodge of Charles Boettcher, a Colorado businessman.

You can do a tour of the mansion or just enjoy the gorgeous mountain views from the grounds for free.

For a real adventure, hike up Lookout Mountain from town. It’s one of the more challenging hikes in Golden but it’s gorgeous and absolutely worth it if you are relatively fit and have the time to hike it.

8. Drive a Scenic Byway From Golden to Evergreen

If you are a fan of scenic drives, then don’t miss the Lariat Loop which starts in Golden and links it to Lookout Mountain, Morrison, and Evergreen – two more of the beautiful mountain towns near Denver .

You can easily spend a day driving the Lariat Loop, stopping off along the way to check out lovely mountain towns, all the attractions on Lookout Mountain, and the numerous scenic viewpoints along the way.

9. Marvel at Dinosaur Fossils

The area around Golden is a fantastic place to see fossilized dinosaur footprints and imprints of prehistoric plants and bird footprints.

Do the short Triceratops trail right by town or walk the two-mile Dinosaur Ridge trail just outside of town to see even more impressive fossilized footprints and dinosaur bones!

Both trails are paved and easily accessible so are a great option for the whole family.

10. Experience Red Rocks

You can’t miss visiting Red Rocks Amphitheatre when in the area – it is definitely one of the best and most unique things to do in Golden.

Red Rocks Amphitheatre is one of the best places in the world to see a performance, with incredible natural acoustics and one of the most gorgeous settings, surrounded by jutting red rocks and with views all the way to Denver in the distance.

It is definitely a splurge to see a band perform here, but for a more affordable Red Rocks experience, go see a film on the rocks – you get to sit in the amphitheater and there is even pre-entertainment which is usually a comedian. Tickets start at $20.

Even if you aren’t able to see a band or go to a film, you should definitely still visit to check out the Amphitheater, the historic Trading Post, and the Colorado Music Hall of Fame – it’s free to enter all three.

You should definitely do one of the hikes at Red Rocks too – either the Red Rocks Trail or the shorter Trading Post trail which gets you up close and personal with these wondrous red rocks.

11. Go Back in Time at the Golden History Park

Golden History Park is a grouping of historic buildings, like a little village, right by Clear Creek.

The buildings are not always open – actually, they seem to hardly ever be open, but your best bet, if you do want to see inside, is to visit on a weekend in summer, especially a holiday weekend.

There is a school, various historic cabins, a blacksmith shop, and more. When they are open, there are costumed interpreters that will tell you about what life was like in Golden and other places in Colorado in the late 19th Century.

Even if nothing is open when you are visiting, it’s still a great place to take photos, peek in the windows, feed the chickens, and read the information panels to find out more about Golden’s storied past.

12. Buy Local at the Golden Farmer’s Market

I love a Farmer’s Market and always try to catch them when I am on the road because it’s a great way to get a feel for the community of a place, as well as supporting local businesses and farmers, and getting to sample delicious local produce and foodstuffs.

The Golden Farmer’s Market is on a Saturday and every time I have visited it is always bustling with locals and visitors. Grab a coffee, wander the food and art stalls, enjoy the live music, and treat yourself to breakfast or lunch from one of the food vendors.

13. Bike the Clear Creek Trail

As well as hiking trails, Golden is also a great place to bike, and the Clear Creek trail is an easy and pretty trail you can take as far as you feel like – you can connect with other bike trails and make it all the way to Denver if you wanted.

Bring your own bike or you can rent one from one of the many bike rental shops in town.

If you are feeling energetic, you can bike the 20 miles return to Wheat Ridge along the river – it’s a beautiful ride and you could stop off in Olde Town Arvada to check out the lovely downtown area there.

14. Enjoy the Best Fall Colors Close to Denver

Colorado is home to some of the most impressive fall colors in the country and fall is my favorite time of year here.

A lot of the more impressive fall displays are further into the mountains but there are a couple of spots in Golden that are definitely worth seeing in fall – especially Golden Gate Canyon State Park.

The fall colors at the park tend to peak around the middle of September to the beginning of October, but right in town in October, there is a gorgeous display of golden cottonwood trees along Clear Creek too.

15. Tour Coors Brewery

I have actually never done this tour myself as I am not a fan of Coors beer but I felt like I should add it as I have heard it is interesting, and you get a very generous tasting session at the end. You will have to tell me how it is, maybe I will do it myself one day.

Tours go for $20 including a tasting at the end, or it is $10 for tasting in the lounge only. 

So there you have it, all my favorite things to do in Golden CO – and none of them will break the bank. I hope you enjoy this gorgeous town as much as I do.

Where To Stay in Golden

If you are traveling in an RV or with a tent, you should definitely stay at the Clear Creek RV Park – it’s right by the river and only a few minutes walk from town. It books out fast so make sure to reserve your spot.

There are also lots of great hotels and cheap motels to choose from in Golden, stay at the adobe-style boutique Table Mountain Inn  right in downtown Golden, the newly-built  The Eddy Taproom and Hotel  which has mountain views and is perched on a hill above town, or  The Golden Hotel  on the river right in town.

Wildfire west of Golden now 100 percent contained

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) - Thanks to firefighters, a wildfire west of Golden is officially 100 percent contained after burning a total of 205 acres.

A wildfire west of the Denver metro area exploded Tuesday night, gaining nearly 200 acres and forcing an 11-mile stretch of highway to shut down while crews try to get the upper hand.

The Goltra Fire was ignited when lightning struck the top of a mountain Tuesday evening and burned the area of Highway 6 near tunnel 1, just to the west of Golden. Early on, the fire’s growth was slow, and the fire was deemed somewhat under control after a couple of hours.

“Fire is holding at a ‘guess-timated’ 10 acres and has slowed significantly in the shrubs and rock outcroppings. [Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office] will monitor the fire through the night. Fire crews will continue their work in the morning,” read a social media post by the sheriff’s office at 7:46 p.m.

But at 10:36 p.m., the sheriff’s office said the situation had changed:

Intense winds filtering through Clear Creek Canyon allowed the fire to explode to 204 acres by Wednesday afternoon.

“Winds continue to be a challenge for us through the night and into this morning,” the sheriff’s office said.

In addition to the wind, the sheriff’s office says the vertical terrain and presence of rattlesnakes gave firefighters even more obstacles.

The sheriff’s office reached 60 percent containment by Wednesday night. The sheriff’s office shared a photo of crews eating dinner together as they got off the mountain for the night.

The sheriff’s office said the canyon and Highway 6 would remain closed until around 5 p.m. on Thursday as crews continued to monitor the area and conduct final operations.

“A lightning strike caused the #GoltraFire ; therefore, Mother Nature is the only party responsible,” the sheriff’s office said on Thursday.
