Choosing between an Eastern vs. Western Caribbean cruise is a common question for cruisers looking for warm weather during the winter months.

The decision involves weighing various factors and preferences to determine which side of the Caribbean best suits your interests.

I’ll share key elements in this article to help you choose the right Caribbean cruise.

Geographical Overview

Many travelers think Caribbean destinations are all the same, but this is not the case when looking at the Eastern vs. Western Caribbean .

Islands in the Eastern Caribbean tend to be smaller and more mountainous than those in the west. You will often find dense rainforests with volcanic terrain and stunning beaches in the Eastern Caribbean. Additionally, the east water is usually calmer and ideal for water sports.

The west side of the Caribbean offers a more wide-ranging experience with larger landmasses and diverse landscapes, from the tropical rainforests in Honduras to the arid coastal areas in Mexico.

Even the underwater world is different within the Eastern and Western Caribbean . The west is a popular hotspot for scuba diving, along with the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, which is along the coast of Belize and Mexico.

At the same time, the east offers some of the world’s most popular beaches, from Playa Flamenco in San Juan to Magens Bay in St. Thomas .

Itineraries and Ports

When comparing Eastern vs. Western Caribbean ports , you will find that the East is known for its lush landscapes, beautiful beaches, and historic sites.

At the same time, the West is popular for travelers looking to explore the underwater world with world-class snorkeling and scuba diving.

The Eastern Caribbean includes ports like:

• St. Thomas, USVI
• Tortola, BVI
• San Juan, Puerto Rico
• Amber Cove, Dominican Republic
• Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos
• St. Maarten

Western Caribbean includes ports like:

• Cozumel, Mexico
• Costa Maya , Mexico
• Roatan, Honduras
• Belize City, Belize
• Georgetown, Cayman Islands
• Various ports in Jamaica

When comparing Western vs. Eastern itineraries , the West takes you through pristine natural scenery, with the opportunity to hike through Mayan ruins and jump into deep blue cenotes in Tulum, Mexico or swim with the stingrays in Grand Cayman.

In the east, you may find yourself hiking to waterfalls in El Yunque National Park in Puerto Rico or relaxing at Trunk Bay in St. John.

Embarkation Ports

Popular departure ports for Eastern Caribbean cruises include Miami and Fort Lauderdale in Florida, San Juan in Puerto Rico, and longer-length voyages from New York.

When cruising to the western side of the Caribbean , ships will most likely leave from Miami, Tampa, or Fort Lauderdale in Florida or New Orleans and Galveston in the Gulf of Mexico.

When comparing cruise length vs. western routes, you can generally find shorter cruise options to the east, starting at only four or five nights (Grand Turk), while the shortest cruise you can take to the west is four nights (Cozumel). 

Longer cruises tend to showcase the Eastern side of the Caribbean , with many options ranging from 9-12 nights, while most western Caribbean cruises are more in the week-long variety. Take this into consideration while planning your cruise .

When looking at eastern vs. western Caribbean cruises, you will find that the east offers more picture-perfect beaches typically associated with Caribbean cruising.

Eastern Caribbean

Destinations like St. Thomas, St. Maarten, and The Bahamas deliver what guests want in a tropical getaway – stunning white sand beaches, palm trees, and clear water.

These destinations are also top snorkeling and diving spots where you can explore vibrant coral reefs and old shipwrecks in places like the U.S Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

You may find yourself exploring many historical sites and cultural experiences when on the Eastern side of the Caribbean.

At the same time, landside, the destinations are dotted with old forts, museums, and vibrant local markets. The east is also perfect for island hopping, with the opportunity to visit multiple islands and experience diverse cultures on a single voyage.

Western Caribbean

On the other hand, Western Caribbean cruises feature ports like Cozumel, Belize, and Honduras, well known for their adventurous activities and adrenaline-filled sports, attracting thrill-seekers worldwide.

Here, you can take a tube ride through caves, go ziplining, or engage in watersports like snorkeling in the Grand Cayman or swimming with dolphins in Roatan. Of course, if all you want to do is relax on the sand with a book and a cocktail, that’s fine, too.

However, western Caribbean beaches aren’t as famous for their idyllic beachside locales as their Eastern Caribbean counterparts.

One plus of the western Caribbean is the rich cultural side, where you can soak up the sun as you learn about the Mayan culture and the rich history of Mexico by visiting local markets and sampling local street food.

Shopping experiences for cruise passengers in the Eastern and Western Caribbean ports offer different options.

Eastern Caribbean ports, such as St. Thomas and St. Maarten, are famous for high ticket shops, including jewelry, watches, and designer brands, often at duty-free prices. These ports are also known for local crafts and unique souvenirs.

On the other hand, Western Caribbean stops, such as Cozumel and Grand Cayman, offer a more diverse shopping scene, focusing on local artisanal products like handmade crafts, textiles, and local spirits. Western ports also have a variety of outdoor markets, where visitors can immerse themselves in the vibrant local culture and find unique, region-specific items.

However, both regions cater well to tourists, ensuring a broad range of options from high-end boutiques to local market stalls.

Best Time to Go

The best time to go depends on your weather preferences and tolerance for crowds.

Generally, the peak season for both regions is between December and April, offering warm and dry weather, perfect for beach activities and exploring ports. However, this period also sees higher prices and more crowded ships and destinations.

If you prefer fewer crowds and potential deals, the late spring and early fall months can be ideal, but it’s important to note that this coincides with the hurricane season (June to November), which may bring unpredictable weather. Traveling during this off-peak season requires flexibility and careful monitoring of weather forecasts.

Hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30, affects the entire Caribbean – and the East and Gulf Coasts –  so you should be mindful when booking a cruise. 

Canceling a cruise outright is uncommon since cruise lines also have financial interests in operating these voyages. If you’re planning a Caribbean cruise in the summer or fall, it’s important to keep an eye on the weather, have backup plans in case of unfavorable conditions, and consider buying travel insurance .

The western Caribbean is typically hotter and more humid than the east, but not so much. Destinations along the west, like Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and Belize, tend to be warmer and more humid during summer, with temperatures approaching 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

At the same time, the Eastern side is usually a bit cooler, averaging around 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. 

Examples of Caribbean Sailings

No matter which Caribbean cruise lines you choose, you will find numerous options for the east and west of the Caribbean. Many different cruise lines do both itineraries. Here are a few examples:

Disney Cruise Line Sailings

For this example, let’s use Disney Cruise Line’s Caribbean itineraries for Eastern vs. Western cruises.

On their western Caribbean routes, Disney ships visit ports like Costa Maya, Progreso, and Cozumel in Mexico, George Town, Grand Cayman, and Falmouth, Jamaica.

While Eastern Caribbean sailings typically include destinations such as Philipsburg, St. Maarten; Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; and Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic.

Royal Caribbean Sailings

As for other cruise lines, Royal Caribbean alone has 287 itineraries on the Eastern Caribbean and 104 from along the western side.

Carnival Cruise Line Voyages

Carnival Cruise Line’s itineraries are very similar to other operators, with Eastern itineraries typically including stops at ports such as San Juan, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Maarten, and the Bahamas, with western itineraries featuring ports such as Cozumel, Mexico, Grand Cayman, Jamaica, and Belize. 

Norwegian Cruise Line Voyages

As for itinerary length, Norwegian Cruise Line’s voyages western itineraries usually run from 5-7 days, while the Eastern route has itineraries from 5-10 days. 

So, as you can see, the Eastern and Western itineraries are consistent among cruise operators, but duration can vary among the lines. 

Safety in Ports

Like on any vacation – a seagoing adventure or on land – you should always be mindful of your surroundings and implement safety measures when traveling to the Eastern or Western Caribbean.

While it is highly unlikely that you will encounter any crime or danger, particularly if you stay within the tourist areas or take an organized excursion through the cruise line, precautions should always be taken when traveling.

When comparing cruise safety between the western Caribbean vs. Eastern Caribbean, you will find that there are safer destinations and destinations with higher crime rates on both sides.

Some of the safest Caribbean islands include the Cayman Islands in the west, Montserrat in the east, and the British Virgin Islands in the Eastern Caribbean. Islands with higher crime rates include Haiti and Trinidad and Tobago in the western Caribbean. While these islands have higher crime rates, most issues are internal and unrelated to tourists or resort areas. 

A Focus on Beaches

Regardless of what side of the Caribbean you visit, you will find gorgeous, white-sand beaches – after all, isn’t that what a Caribbean cruise is all about? Choosing which side has better beaches is hard, but the Eastern Caribbean might have a slight nod as it features some of the world’s most beautiful and famous beaches.

From Trunk Bay in St. John to Dickenson Bay in Antigua, the eastern Caribbean boasts picturesque white-sand beaches and see-to-the-bottom turquoise waters lined with vibrant palm trees. The western Caribbean is picture-perfect with its white beaches and blue waters.

Popular beach spots along the west include the Seven Mile Beach in Grand Cayman and Montego Bay, Jamaica. The Eastern Caribbean wins by a thread regarding the best beaches, but you can’t go wrong with either side. 

Seasonal Differences in the Caribbean

Seasonal considerations play a significant role when planning a Caribbean cruise, but the different seasons don’t vary too much between the Eastern and Western Caribbean. 

Winter and Spring

Summer and fall.

While not all parts of the Eastern and Western Caribbean are affected equally by hurricanes, both sides run the risk during these months. The Eastern side of the Caribbean typically sees a higher risk of hurricanes, but both east and west are at risk of hurricanes and tropical storms . 

Choosing between an Eastern and Western Caribbean cruise is a great dilemma – in the end, you can’t go wrong visiting either side of this amazing cruising region, right? – but deciding based on your specific vacation preferences is important.

The Easy, Breezy, Eastern Caribbean

The islands of the eastern Caribbean are in relatively close proximity, so you can wake up every day at a new destination. The southern Caribbean itineraries typically visit Half Moon Cay and cruise by way of the eastern Caribbean islands and then — just when other cruise ships are turning back — dive deeper to explore the Lesser Antilles. There you’ll find European charm in the tropics. From French Martinique to British Barbados, to the Dutch-tinted ABC Islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao, the influence of the European colonial area is strong, but the islands maintain their natural beauty. The distance means that often these cruises are longer.

Knowwadays I am looking to be in more exotic locatioins like the Uyuni Salt flats, Patagonia or the Ecuador. Sometimes all you want is some quiet time to soak in the warm sun. The best place to relax in that scenario is on your own balcony, far from the busy outdoor lounge spaces and crowded poolside areas of the ship. It’s also an amazing experience to watch the sunset or sunrise alone in the peace and quiet of your own space.

Book Your Dining Reservations Early

Specialty restaurants fill up quickly so make sure to book your reservations in advance for any available entertainment and eateries. Make reservations early for meals because popular dinner times and many specialty restaurants book up quickly.

Venture Away From The Beaches

Relaxing on beaches is essential during any Caribbean cruise but make sure to also set aside some time to go on incredible excursions and explore other parts of the islands.

From hitting the hiking trails in search of amazing panoramic views, to swimming in waterfalls, to kayaking in lagoons and ziplining through jungles, there’s so much to experience while on a Caribbean cruise. 

Pack Reef-Safe Sunscreen 

Certain sunscreen chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate, especially in tourist hotspots like the Caribbean, might damage coral reefs. Avoid using products that contain such chemicals while you are in the water to help conserve the fragile reefs. Use sunscreens with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide instead, which are thought to be safe around coral reefs.

Cruise Route Options

One of the first topics we like to address when clients are beginning to plan a cruise to the Caribbean is choosing between regions: Eastern, Western or Southern Caribbean. Each region definitely has its own draw, and some longer cruises allow for a blend of destinations.

However, for this blog, we are going to focus on the highlights and benefits of each option.

If you are traveling from Canada to Florida to depart for your cruise, we suggest that you pick an itinerary length of at least 7-10 days. As Canadians, we do travel a fair distance to get to Florida, and the shorter 3-4 length itineraries can sometimes feel very rushed and like a bit of a ‘whirl·wind’ by the time you get back home.

In saying that, there are lots of destinations that cruisers can fit into a spacious ten-day itinerary.

Eastern Caribbean Cruise Routes

Eastern Caribbean cruises can include:

• Turks and Caicos
• U.S. Virgin Islands
• The British Virgin Islands
• St. Kitts and Nevis
• Puerto Rico
• Dominican Republic

In the East, you will find a perfect blend of old and new world comforts. With influences from Europe, Latin America and Africa, these islands are alive with culture and traditions.

You will be in awe of the jaw-dropping beautiful white sandy beaches and turquoise waters that surround most of the islands with pristine coral reefs ready for snorkelers and divers alike.

Shopping is also a big draw in the East, with bustling ports such as St. Thomas, which has now become the unofficial ‘capital of duty-free shopping.

Most cruise lines offer multiple itineraries that focus solely on the Eastern Caribbean. Because of this, the islands are very equipt for tourism and activities.

Western Caribbean Cruise Routes

Western Caribbean cruises can include:

Western Caribbean itineraries are amazing options if you are interested in Mayan Culture. Spend the morning exploring Mayan ruins tucked away deep within the jungle and later the same day snorkel and explore colorful reefs and delicious island cuisine!

Within the Western Caribbean are destinations such as Jamaica and Cozumel which are equipped with a wide range of eco-adventure activities. Inland activities such as hiking in the jungle and zip trekking are popular choices. Also plentiful are marine activity options, including Stingray City on Grand Cayman and the Blue Hole in Belize.

Since these ports are farther apart than those in Eastern Caribbean, you are typically at sea a few days longer, making the 7-10 day itineraries that much more appealing.

Most cruise lines offer Western-specific itineraries typically departing from Florida.

Southern Caribbean Cruise Routes

Southern Caribbean cruises routes can include:

In the Southern Caribbean islands, you get a chance to experience remote beauty. Diving deeper into the Caribbean you are able to spot pristine, uncrowded beaches and lush landscapes. Enjoy multiple national parks and rainbow-like coral reefs brimming with buzzing marine life.

This is the road less traveled, and because of that, itineraries from Florida start at ten days and go up to 20 days.

The Best Time To Go On A Caribbean Cruise

The best months for a Caribbean cruise are December through April when you get warm weather, and bright, clear skies. This is the peak season for cruising in the Caribbean so expect potentially busy ships. 

The Caribbean experiences hurricane season from June 1 to November 30. The entire region of the Caribbean is at risk during hurricane season, including popular embarkation ports like Fort Lauderdale and Port Canaveral.

Between mid-August and early November is when the hurricane season reaches its height, so stick to traveling to the Caribbean during high season if you’re worried about tropical storms.

When you hear someone speak of the Caribbean, you probably think of a Caribbean cruise to a tropical island where you can sun bathe on a soft sandy beach. In reality, the Caribbean contains over 7,000 islands, islets, reefs, and cays but only 13 islands are inhabited. There is an eastern Caribbean cruise as well as a western and southern, with each visiting several ports. Caribbean cruise deals are offered by many lines, and there is always a great deal available. So how do you choose what Caribbean cruise is right for you?

The Three Caribbean Cruise Routes

The diverseness of the Caribbean is seen in its ecosystems (land and sea), languages, and people. There are three cruise routes that each offer a unique cruise to the western, eastern, and southern Caribbean Islands. Although each cruise line defines the routes a bit differently, they also have many similarities.

Where Will a “Western” Caribbean Cruise Take Me?

Travelers are drawn to the Western Caribbean to explore the history of the ancient Mayan civilization. Cruise ship travelers love swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving in the beautiful turquoise waters. There are a host of popular port activities including zip-lining, 4-wheel-drive vehicle adventures, sightseeing, shopping, dining, and visiting special points of interest at each port. The availability of cruises ranging from 4-days up to 20-days make it a popular choice for a long weekend trip to relax or a full vacation.

The islands of the Western Caribbean are due south of Florida and include Grand Cayman and Jamaica, destinations on Mexico’s Caribbean coast on the Yucatan Peninsula such as Costa Maya, Cozumel, Roatan, and Progreso, as well as Central American destinations such as Belize and Honduras. Some cruises now include Cuba as one of the ports, and occasionally you’ll find a cruise that includes the Bahamas in their itinerary.

The beautiful weather is one of the reasons the Western Caribbean is a popular destination. The most popular time for a Western Caribbean cruise is when it’s cold in the north and mild in the Caribbean. December through March meets those requirements, and there are no storms to deal with. It’s really the perfect place for a cruise anytime of year because it never gets cold with temperatures that vary from highs in the 80s to lows in the 70s. Storms are most likely to occur August through October.

Western Caribbean cruises usually depart from Texas, Louisiana, or the western and southern ports of Florida.

Which cruise should I take: Western or Eastern Caribbean?

Itineraries 

Seven-night, year-round cruises are the most common option in both regions. Eastern routes sail from ports in Florida or from ports along the East Coast. Western itineraries sail from Florida or Texas, and sometimes New Orleans.

If you prefer visiting as many ports as possible, go for Eastern Caribbean sailings that depart from San Juan or St. Thomas — the time you would have spent sailing from Florida is made up by stopping at five or six islands. Western Caribbean routes, on the other hand, rarely stop at more than four ports.

Our Pick:  Draw. Different strokes for different folks. Western routes are best for history and nature, and Eastern ones rank high for beach hopping.

You’ll find good shores on both routes: Jamaica’s Negril and Grand Cayman’s Seven Mile Beach in the West, and too many to count in the Eastern Caribbean’s British and U.S. Virgin Islands, especially the perfect strips of white sand on Jost Van Dyke and St. John. The East’s tiny islands of St. Barts, Les Saintes, and Anguilla are also home to drop-dead gorgeous coastlines.

Our Pick:  Eastern. This is a close one, but we’re going with the Eastern Caribbean due to its quantity of gorgeous strands.

If you need more than sunbathing, shopping, and bar hopping, then the Eastern Caribbean itineraries might seem limiting to you. Yes, you can work up a sweat ziplining in St. Martin or kayaking off the coast of Tortola, but generally speaking, Eastern routes offer less to do beyond beaches and water sports.

Western Caribbean cruises are well rounded: In Mexico you can explore pre-Columbian temples or tube through underwater caves. Scuba dive off the shore of Grand Cayman where dramatic underwater cliffs attract abundant sea life, or try horseback riding through the surf in Jamaica, an island with a tradition of horse racing.

Our Pick:  Western. You can crawl around ancient ruins, go bobsledding, and tour coffee plantations — all on a one-week cruise. 

Most children love anything to do with beaches — playing in the sand, riding waves, and taking banana boat rides.  Both Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries offer great coastlines.

The Western Caribbean, though, has more than great beaches: Mexico’s Mayan ruins, snorkeling and diving along the coast of Belize, and climbing near natural features like Jamaica’s Dunn’s River Falls. The Eastern Caribbean boasts a few outliers, including the awesome El Morro fortress in Old San Juan , but otherwise, the region is mostly about sand and shopping.

Our Pick:  Western. Among the water parks, rivers, and coral reef, these ports are ideal, especially for families traveling with active kids.

Both regions have downsides: The Western’s Grand Cayman can be a dud, as the port is canceled fairly frequently due to heavy winds and surf (ships anchor and shuttle passengers ashore via tender boats), and Jamaica is notorious for vendors with aggressive sales tactics. Meanwhile, St. Thomas and St. Martin on Eastern routes can see more than 10,000 cruise passengers in town at the same time, causing epic traffic jams.

Our Pick:  Western. The Western Caribbean is more of a smorgasbord than the Eastern, so our vote goes for variety.

Choosing a Caribbean Cruise Itinerary

Eastern Caribbean or Western Caribbean - Which Is Best for You?

Caribbean cruises are the most popular cruise destination for cruise travelers. Choosing where to sail - the eastern or western Caribbean - is one of the first decisions made when planning a cruise vacation . Most cruise travelers select a 7-day Caribbean cruise for their first experience at sea. Seven days gives cruise travelers the opportunity to see more places and become adjusted to life on a cruise ship. Shorter 3- or 4- day cruises cost more per day, and often leave travelers not knowing for sure if a cruise vacation is a good travel option for them. 

When you search the Internet or read cruise brochures, the most common itineraries offered are Eastern Caribbean and Western Caribbean. Which is better? The answer is either! It all depends on what your interests are, so in addition to selecting the right ship, you need to research the ports of call before you book your cruise vacation. Both itineraries will provide cruisers with opportunities to sail, swim, snorkel, and shop. But there are differences. Let's take a quick look at the two most popular Caribbean cruise itineraries.

Eastern Caribbean Cruises

Most cruise ships sailing to the eastern Caribbean on 7-day itineraries embark from ports in Florida like Jacksonville, Port Canaveral, Miami, or Tampa, but ships also sail to the region from Charleston, SC, and the New York City area.

Ships sailing to the eastern Caribbean often stopover in the Bahamas at either Nassau  or one of the cruise line's private islands in the archipelago before heading further south to the Eastern Caribbean. These private islands like Disney Cruises' Castaway Cay or Holland America Line's Half Moon Cay offer guests the opportunity to enjoy all sorts of land and water sports in a pristine setting. Ports of call on an Eastern Caribbean itinerary often include St. Thomas, St. John (USVI), Puerto Rico , and perhaps St. Maarten/St. Martin. If you want less sailing (more time in ports ashore) and more shopping and opportunities to go to fantastic beaches, then an Eastern Caribbean itinerary might be more appealing to you. The islands are relatively close together, smaller, and shore excursions tend to be more geared to beach or water activities.

Typical shore activities might include snorkeling, sunning on an amazing beach, or even racing in a sailboat. St. John in the US Virgin Islands has terrific snorkeling, as do the other islands (both British and USA) in the group. One of the most memorable shore excursions in the eastern Caribbean is racing in an America's Cup yacht in St. Maarten. 

Western Caribbean Cruises

Cruise ships sailing to the western Caribbean usually embark from Florida, New Orleans or Texas. Ports of call on a Western Caribbean itinerary often include Cozumel or Playa del Carmen, Mexico; Grand Cayman ; Key West , FL; the Dominican Republic ; Jamaica; Belize; Costa Rica ; or Roatan . If you look at a Caribbean map, you will see that since the ports of call are further apart, more time at sea is usually involved on a western Caribbean cruise. So, you may have more time on the cruise ship and less time in port or on the beach.

The ports of call in the western Caribbean are sometimes on the mainland (Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica) or at larger islands (Jamaica, Dominican Republic). Therefore, the shore excursion options are more varied since the islands and mainland are more diverse. You can explore ancient Mayan ruins, hike the rain forests, or go snorkeling or SCUBA diving in some unforgettable locations. Of course, you'll still find opportunities for shopping or just sitting on a spectacular beach watching the azure blue Caribbean. Many travelers identify swimming with dolphins in Cozumel as a favorite shore excursion on western Caribbean cruises. A second is cave tubing in Belize. And, most people never forget visiting Stingray City on Grand Cayman Island.

If you are now thoroughly confused, that's okay! The Caribbean Sea is a cruise lover's heaven--blue seas, sunny beaches, and interesting ports of call filled with history and fascinating cultures. You will get all of these whichever direction you cruise. East and West are both great--and then there's the Southern Caribbean, but that's for another day!

Port of Call Port of Call (Arrival, Departure)

The City of Miami known as the “Magic City” is located in Southeast Florida, in Miami-Dade County on the Miami River, between the Florida Everglades and the Atlantic Ocean. Since its incorporation in 1896, the City has grown tremendously, transforming it into one of the world’s renowned centers where people can work, live and play while enjoying a high quality of life. The City of Miami, known for its diverse culture and ethnicities is the largest municipality in Miami-Dade County. According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 362,470. By the year 2010 the population in the City is projected to rise to 390,191. Miami which is known as the Gateway to Latin America attracts a tremendous amount of foreign born people, resulting in a large Latin American population that includes Cubans, Nicaraguans, Colombians, Venezuelans, Puerto Ricans, Argentineans, Ecuadorians, Brazilians, Dominicans, Haitians and Mexicans. According to the 2000 U.S. census, the City has a 60 percent Hispanic population, a 22.3 percent African-American population and an 11.9 percent White/other population.

Grand Cayman

Grand Cayman is the largest of the Cayman Islands, a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean. George Town, its capital, is home to the Cayman Islands National Museum, dedicated to Caymanian heritage. The city is also a major cruise-ship port and site of the ruins of colonial-era Fort George. Beaches and vibrant coral reefs are the island’s hallmarks.

Montego Bay

Montego Bay is the capital of the parish of St. James and is also Jamaica's only other officially incorporated city, referred to as The Second City or more widely known as MoBay in local lingo and sometimes Bay by the locals. The city is however the fourth largest urban area by population after Kingston, Spanish Town and Portmore, all of which form the Greater Kingston Metropolitan Area, home to over half a million people.As a result, Montego Bay is the second-largest Anglophone city in the Caribbean, after primate city, Kingston. Montego Bay is a popular tourist destination featuring duty-free shopping, a cruise line terminal and several beaches and resorts. The city is served by the Donald Sangster International Airport, the busiest airport in the Anglophone Caribbean, which is located within the official city limits. The city is enclosed in a watershed, drained by several rivers such as the Montego River.

The Bay Islands of Honduras offer a very different world from that of mainland Honduras. Of the three islands, the largest, and most developed for tourism is Roatan. Roatan is a long island, measuring almost 40 miles in length and with a total landmass of 49 Square miles. The island has a mountainous backbone and is totally surrounded by coral reefs, offering superb diving as well as excellent fishing.

The tiny fishing village of Mahahual is located on Mexico's Southern Caribbean in the southern most part of the state of Quintana Roo. Known as the Mayan coast, in Spanish Costa Maya, the town of Mahahual is at the geographic center of the coast. The Costa Maya takes it's name from the many centuries over which the Mayan people have known of this fishing and diving paradise. Having slumbered for hundreds of years, the once sleepy fishing village of Mahahual, also spelled Majahual, no one knows which is correct, is now beginning to awaken to the attraction of eco-tourism. Located just south of the huge 1,500,000 acre Sian Ka'an wildlife preserve, Mahahual has recently been discovered by tourists from North America.

The beautiful island of Cozumel, the largest inhabited island in Mexico, is a paradise for divers from all over the world. The island is surrounded by more than 25 reef formations where divers of all ages and skills can enter into a completely fascinating and different world: endless coral inhabited by immense shoals of colorful fish. The possibilities are interminable for both beginners and experts. East of the Yucatán Peninsula, on top of the age-old structures of the Mayan coral reef, the second largest in the world, stands the Island of Cozumel, the largest inhabited island in Mexico. Its name, derived from the word Cuzamil, meaning “island of swallows” in Maya, conjures up memories of its pre-Hispanic origin, the conquest of America and the pirates and buccaneers that thronged its seas. The Island of Cozumel measures 48 km from north to south but only 16 from east to west. On either side of the island, beaches form a long, white sandy coast. Gentle waves and transparent waters wash the western side of the island, while huge waves crash against the eastern side. Its flora and fauna have a number of unusual features and include certain endemic species, such as the dwarf raccoon and the Cozumel wren. Cozumel’s greatest wealth, however, lies underwater.
