15 Best Things to Do in Legazpi City (the Philippines)

Legpazi City calls itself “the city of fun and adventure” and for good reason. This city is home to Mt. Mayon, a 20 million year old active volcano that offers both wild adventure and captivating history. While you’re here, you have the chance to explore around the base of the volcano with ATV tours, hiking, photography, and more. While capturing unbelievable views, you’ll learn about its active history of eruptions that have wiped out entire populations and desecrated whole villages.

Named after Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, a Spanish conquistador, there is a lot of history and culture to be experienced in Legazpi City. You’ll have the chance to visit monuments which represent the many nationalities who have once called this island home or refuge like the Franciscan church, the Spanish pier, and the Japanese tunnels. From adventure to history and shopping to eating, if Legazpi City isn’t already on your list of places to visit in the Philippines, it absolutely will be after today.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Legazpi City :

1. Cagsawa Ruins Park

Cagsawa Ruins Park

Built in 1587 destroyed in 1646, then reconstructed in 1724 and once again destroyed in 1814 (along with thousands of native people)- this Franciscan church certainly has some stories to tell.

On a clear day, Mt. Mayon sits perfectly behind the Cagsawa Ruins separated only by a plain of bright green rice fields.

The church ruins are what mysterious thriller movies are made of.

There is a unique juxtaposition between the crumbling brick church with rogue greenery growing out of its cracks against serene nature that feels pure and wholesome.

It’s an unexpected discovery that gets your mind racing.

You can take ‘the Leaning Tower of Pisa’ style photos or just gawk at the wonder that surrounds this ancient location.

2. Mayon Volcano National Park

Mayon Volcano National Park

You’ll see Mt. Mayon everywhere you go in Legazpi and eventually get curious enough to get a little bit closer.

You can hike along the base of the volcano, take an ATV tour, or go with a Jeepney tour that will take you up to the closes to the observatory.

There are plenty of ways to get a bit more personal with this insane natural wonder.

As Mt. Mayon is an active volcano, you’ll see a puff of smoke coming from its peak and a small cloud of smoke hanging just above it.

It’s so idyllic that it looks like a painting! The base of the mountain consists of flat plains, rice fields, creeks, and rivers, all waiting to be explored.

3. Vera Falls

Vera Falls

This stunning waterfall is located between two volcanoes on the other side of Mt. Mayon where you’ll have to cross through a couple of small towns to get there.

You’ll hire a car or join a tour group to take a 40- minute drive from Legazpi center.

Take advantage of the small town prices and culture by asking your driver to stop for a bite to eat.

When you reach the car park, you’ll embark on a walk down a set of 100 jungle stairs that will lead you to the beautiful Vera Falls.

There is a cool and shallow pool of water at the base of the waterfall perfect for splashing about on a hot day in the Philippines.

4. Japanese Tunnels

Japanese Tunnels

As you may know, the Philippines were caught up in WWII with a Japanese invasion that has left its mark on the country in many ways, including left over infrastructure.

In Oriental-Legazpi, you can visit a Japanese-dug tunnel from 1941. Back in the day, the tunnel stretched all the way to city hall.

Today, the tunnel isn’t quite as long but still offers a decent amount of crawl space to get your heart racing.

Climb around through the tunnel where the height ranges from 3-4 feet tall.

It is set seemingly in the middle of nowhere; a jungle tunnel that the Japanese thought no one would ever find.

5. Quitinday Underground River

Quitinday Underground River

It’s worth it to visit Legazpi just to experience the Quitinday Underground River.

Hire a driver to take the 30-minute drive.

Get out and walk 500m along a jungle path until you get to a small watering hole.

At first glance, it looks like there’s not much to be seen…but this is only the beginning.

For ₱100, a tour guide on site will take you rafting through the underground river where you’ll see a complex system of natural caves that have been formed by water erosion.

Some caves you can walk through with small waterfalls at your feet.

Others you will raft through, like the Calabidongan Cave, otherwise known as “Cave of Bats”. If you’re brave enough, take a cliff dive into a pool of natural aquamarine water.

6. Daraga Church

Daraga Church

This church is so majestic that it doesn’t even look real.

Set atop a hill with Mt. Mayon in the background, this white towering piece of architecture looks like every castle from a Disney movie ever.

But dig a little bit deeper and you’ll discover that this church has served as a pillar of faith in this community since it was built by Franciscan missionaries in 1773.

During the church’s 230-year life, it has seen so much including a devastating volcano eruption in 1814 that killed 2,00 people, as well as centuries of national instability with wars, invasions, and corruption.

7. Colonial Grill

Colonial Grill

In Legazpi City, there is a Filipino restaurant you have to try.  It is mid-range in price, has plenty of space for big groups, and their food keeps them standing as a local favorite.

Check out Colonial Grill’s “Best Sellers” list full of dishes that never disappoint, such as Buko Chopseuy, Spicy Shrimp, and Tinapa rice.

Portions come out huge in family-style serving dishes so you and your crew can try a little bit of everything.

But, you mustn’t leave without trying the Sili Ice Cream made with chilies- it is to die for.

The staff is friendly and accommodating, so if you have any questions about the menu or want some recommendations, they are happy to oblige.

8. ATV Tour

Your Brother Travel And Tours

You’ll find many ATV tour companies in Legazpi City but Your Brother Travel and Tours is the most popular. These friendly and experienced tour guides will take you on the ride of your life around Mt. Mayon and the gorgeous scenery below.

Visit the ruins, ride along the river, check out some free flowing lava- it’s really an unforgettable experience.

There are plenty of tours to choose, some lasting 45-minutes and others lasting 4 hours! No matter your skill, experience, or age, the tour leaders will find a way to comfortably accommodate you.

Fun Fact: Zac Efron went on an ATV tour with Your Brother Travel and Tours when he was last in Manila for a concert.

9. Pacific Mall

Pacific Mall

Get an everyday local experience by shopping or perusing at Pacific Mall.

Although the mall isn’t massive, you can find any basics you need here: flip flops, backpacks, sunscreen, etc.

There’s also a Robinson’s Supermarket so you can stock up on snacks and toiletries, too.

But the real reason to visit the Pacific Mall is the food! There are plenty of  small food stands selling Filipino and western (ish) food, along with pots of authentic Legazpi dishes where you can point and choose what you’d like.

10. Lignon Hill Nature Park

Lignon Hill Nature Park

Up a 156-meter high hill in Legazpi City, you’ll find only the most carefree, spontaneous, and brave souls ready to take on some adventure.

Jump on the 320-meter long zipline where you’ll soar down the mountain with an incredible view of Mt. Mayon on your left and the green grassy plains far below.

Lignon Hill Nature Park is up so high that it offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of the valley and is the perfect place to watch the sunset and sunrise.

You can hike up the steep hill anytime you’d like with the Kapit Tuko Trail (Lizard Grip Trail) taking just 10 minutes- but I must warn you, it’s a challenge.

11. Bar 101

Bar 101

If you’re looking for a little nightlife in Legazpi City, you’ve got to go to Bar 101. This is the spot where locals go to play billiards next to a huge backdrop of the Beatles, listen to live music under fluorescent lights, get loose on the dance floor, visit the private karaoke room and drink some cold beers with some friendly strangers.

Technically, you’re not supposed to smoke here but it seems that no one really follows that rule.

Open until midnight!

12. Albay Park and Wildlife

Albay Park And Wildlife

Albay Park and Wildlife has everything a family, couple, or even a solo traveler would need to have an unforgettable day.

With over 300 animals belonging to 75 different species, there is a lot to see here.

You’ll find the rare Philippine Hawk Eagle, iguanas, pythons, deer, pigs, crocodiles and more.

A very interesting feature here is a museum with embalmed animals like a two-headed baby Carabao and a Megamouth Shark.

Rent a bicycle and tour the park which offers shady trees that are perfect for when you need a rest.

Take a small boat out on the lagoon, rent a cottage for a nap or overnight stay, or even go fishing on designated days.

13. Albay Capitol Atrium Art Gallery

Albay Capitol Atrium Art Gallery

Get in touch with your inner art critic at Albay Capitol Atrium Art Gallery.

While the space is small, the talented exhibitions fill it easily.

You’ll see work from local artists in many different forms.

There are paintings and photographs, live music, body art, and sometimes you’ll catch an artist in the act of creating a masterpiece right before your eyes.

This is a perfect place to go and chat with local artists who are more than happy to socialize with museum-goers.

14. Bob Marlin Restaurant

Bob Marlin Restaurant

Down on Rizal Avenue is Bob Marlin Restaurant that serves local style of Filipino food called ‘Bicolano’ as well as, traditional Filipino and Western dishes- there’s something here for everyone.

This is your chance to try true Filipino food!

The atmosphere here is super laidback where you can just rock up and have a seat.

If you’re rolling in a big group, feel free to call ahead to reserve a table.

If you’ve looking to have a party in Legazpi with catered food, Bob Marlin Restaurant has got your back.

15. Legazpi Boulevard

Legazpi Boulevard

Yes, Legazpi Boulevard offers stunning views of Mt. Mayon across a glistening lake that reflects the sunset in the evening, but there is so much more to be enjoyed.

Sit down at one of the many restaurants and cafes that line the boulevard with gorgeous views, go on a 3 kilometer run, or join in on some of the cities athletic events that take place here like the Mayon Triathalon, Ultramarathon, and dragon boat festivals.

Legazpi City which is popularly known as the City of Fun and Adventure, is the home of the world-famous Mount Mayon — a perfect-cone shaped volcano and also the most active one in the Philippines . Legazpi is a capital of the Province of Albay in the Bicol Region offering a fusion of nature, adventure, culture experience, and delicious must-try cuisines with locals that warmly welcomes you.

Why travel to Legazpi City in Albay? Simple, because of Mount Mayon. As a first time tourist in Legazpi, even before the plane has landed, I was wowed by the greatness of Mayon even though I only saw the tip of it through the window of an airplane at 6 AM.

There is no other way that I can explain the feeling of seeing something famous and historical. It was an emotional experience for me ’cause I only see it in Philippine history books and the glimpse of it felt unreal.

6 Best Things To Do in Legazpi City, Albay

Legazpi maybe famous for Mount Mayon, but I was surprised about everything that I have experienced. While the purpose wasn’t actually to tour Legazpi, I had a great adventure in a short span of time. Given the time constraints, here are the best things to do that I did in Legazpi, Albay.

1. MAYON VOLCANO ATV ADVENTURE – Best Thing To Do in Legazpi

Mount Mayon being the must-see and the top tier attraction in Legazpi, I need to gaze at it in the best way possible that I can. The only way that you can feast your eyes on looking her majesty is through an ATV adventure.

atv adventure legazpi albay

Mayon Volcano ATV adventure is the best thing to do in Legazpi. I booked the Mount Mayon SkyDrive ATV Experience through Klook . Regardless if you have tried ATV before or not, you will be practicing for a couple of minutes on the ground practice area before going to your chosen trail.

I chose the Skydrive grassland trail for ₱500 in 20-30 minutes activity time ’cause I just want to take photos of Mayon. But I highly suggest to book its best selling Skydrive Combo Trail in 50-60 minutes for ₱1,250. You will be passing through the extreme route of Sykdrive river, then go to snake trail, and then Cagsawa Forest Trail. I know it’s worth it.

💡   PRO TIP : Mayon Volcano ATV Adventure is best to do in the morning as early as 6:30 AM because of lesser clouds around Mount Mayon, so you can actually see its symmetric volcano cones clearly.

2. CAGSAWA RUINS — Best Tourist Attraction in Legazpi

To be able to see Mount Mayon is already overwhelming but the sight of it with another historical landmark in Cagsawa Ruins Park was beyond breathtaking.

cagsawa ruins park legazpi

Cagsawa Ruins is the best tourist attraction in Legazpi. It is located just outside the city of Daraga. Being the most popular tourist destination, this is where you can spend so much of your time taking photos, doing activities, shopping souvenirs, and try authentic Bicol food. It has an environmental fee of ₱20 for adult.

💡   PRO TIP: On your first day in Legazpi, visit Cagsawa ruins first because it has almost everything that you need to try and experience such as visiting the Bicol National museum, trying chili ice cream, ATV rides and more. Go there as early as 7AM before it gets too crowded, have lunch, and shop for souvenirs.

3. DARAGA CHURCH — Best Church in Legazpi

The best view of Mount Mayon is when you’re in Daraga Church. If you’re lucky enough that she’s not hiding behind the clouds, you’ll get the perfect parallel eye level of her. This late 18th century church is standing there as a sign of unwavering faith of Bicolanos and their resilience.

LegazpiAlbay 03

Situated on a hilltop with a commanding view of Mayon Volcano, Daraga Church is one of the most visited churches in Albay. It is also known as Our Lady of the Gate or the church of Nuestra Senora de la Porteria and has been declared a National Cultural Treasure in 2007 and a National Historical Landmark in 2008. With those recognitions, Daraga Church must be on top of your list when you visit Legazpi.

4. NATIONAL MUSEUM BICOL

The NM Bicol Regional Museum (National Museum Bicol) is located next to the Cagsawa Church Ruins, a National Cultural Treasure (NCT).

Its exhibitions will feature the unique geological landscapes of Bicol that will underscore the marvels of Mayon. The museum is open everyday except Monday. If you have plan on visiting Bicol Regional museum, I advise to not schedule your Cagsawa Ruins Park that falls on Monday It saves you lots of time. Admission is free plus you get to visit their butterfly garden just beside the museum.

5. PINANGAT AND BICOL EXPRESS BAGNET — Best Food To Try in Legazpi

Bicol is known for dishes that owe its texture and creaminess to coconut milk (gata) and its spicy kick to chilis. The food culture in Bicol region has much excitement to offer that’s why it’s a gastronomic adventure I didn’t miss in Legazpi.

LegazpiAlbay 07

Among the best of Bicol is the Pinangat. This one is made of fish or shrimp wrapped in gabi or yam leaves and cooked in, of course, coconut milk. Bicol

Good news to travelers that loves to pay extra just to be convenient, Grab car is now fully operational in Legazpi City. that’s a beautiful Mayon and a beautiful you. Glad to see new angles of the volcano and of the church. I haven’t been there. How I wish I could travel there someday.

Legazpi and the whole Albay is beautiful. I used to live there during my university days and I love it. But one thing that makes me keep on coming back to Legazpi is not actually the Mayon Volcano, but the people I’ve met through the years. I love dining to this small food kiosk that serve comfort food (lugaw with eggs) each night near Albay Astrodome. Food is indeed making the place standout.

Hi this coming summer of 2014, planning to visit legazpi albay. Can you please send how much is your tour package for 4 adults and 1 kid (4yo by that time). I am planning to bring my own car.. could you provide also map / direction how to get there. Or if your tour package is inclusive of the transportation, will it be advisable that we take the plane. Thanks.

beware on the online tour package,..,Much better if you just walk in on their office to talk to the tourist personnel dun n mismo sa bicol.,.. Dont try to ask in Aventura tour package ,,.. Mahirap silang kausap..They are asking for more money., and super bastos kausap after the tour….Also,.. try to download ” waze ” apps on ipad,.. just make sure you have your ipad or iphone with net.. Its really a big help to navigate going to bicol , but the apps is hanggang Naga city lng,,,.. you can just ask people along the way and their sign board kinda confusing kya ingat sa ligaw..but soo far hindi kme naligaw as long as ung isa taga monitor ng navigator….Its actually much fun to drive ,coz u can sight seeing different towns…though its kinda tiring but if u got kids with u much better to take a plane.. if your coming from manila 12 to 13 hrs. drive.. sorry cant give u much info in tour package,..s bicol n kme mismo nagtanong at nag bargain pra sure.. mababait nman ung mga bicolano,..for sure ull enjoy your trip there..try to go to embarkadero in albay.. it is a seaside resto viewing mt, mayon..^^

legazpi city tourist destination

Hi! We will be in Legazpi this June 6 and would like to inquire about pocket friendly but good place to stay, and tour offers… please help give details on my email… [email protected]

Me and my wife booked whale shark sight seeing thru http://www.bicolaventura.com/contact-us/ .. we were told the cost of the tour would be 1100 php per person for the entire tour since we would not require transportation to Donsol since we had our own car. On arrival we were told that since we were only two people we would need to put a deposit down for the entire capacity of the which is six tourist. Our tour guide told us that this would reserve us a spot that day since the government limits how many boats and people go out in one days time. The guide said that 6000 php would reserve us a boat and once other tourist arrived and we had four other tourist to join us we would recieve all but our 2200 php back. We were eventually joined by four other tourist and set out to see the whale shark. Upon returning to land and finding our tour guide to recieve our deposit back ee were only given 2600 php. When we asked for the rest we were told that was all there was. We then showed the TXT message we had recieved from the number on the website to the tour guide that stated 1100 php per person, he called his agent who told us that the 1100 php did not include the rental of the snorkel equipment and the enviromental fee and tourist fee. My wife explained to the lady on the phone that this was notbwhat we were told at which point the lady replied to my wife “tuff shit you did not understand” and hung up the phone. In short not only were we not given the rest of our money, now I alsohad to deal with a very angry wife on Valentines day. Best advice never use this agency and do not let any agency talk you into giving a deposit just wait till there is a group of six people. Also be forwarned that it is not guaranted you will see a whale shark, your tour will last for a maximium of 3 hour and there is no refund or raincheck.

Thanks for the review and feedback US Guy! Well, I hope you still enjoy your time in Bicol.

8 ADVENTUROUS THINGS TO DO IN LEGAZPI, PHILIPPINES

Posted on Last updated: August 5, 2024

Categories PHILIPPINES

Planning your Legazpi Itinerary and seeking all of the best things to do? Great, we have got you covered. After spending some time exploring Legazpi, we can share what we got up to, and what we consider to be the top things to do in Legazpi. We also include the best places to eat, where you should stay, and all of our top tips.

Legazpi is an underated destination in the eastern part of the Philippines.  Until recently, many travellers disregarded this city in favour of paradise islands and breathtaking beaches.  However, with more and more travellers seeking an off-the-beaten path experience, backpacking in Legazpi has well and truly caught on.

At first glance Legazpi appears to be a sleepy beachside town with not much to do, when in fact, it is a city steeped in rich history and wild adventure. The main attraction is the prodigious Mount Mayon – The Philippines most active & perfectly symmetrical volcano. This colossal event of Mother Nature towers over the city with alluring mystery, and most adventures in Legazpi revolve around getting a closer look.

Located just a short flight from Manila and boasting everything you need to have a truly fantastic time, we highly recommend adding Legazpi to your Philippines Itinerary.

MOUNT MAYON VOLCANO IN LEGAZPI, PHILIPPINES

8 Adventurous Things to do in Legazpi

*Before You Travel to Legazpi , have you got your travel insurance sorted? Cover yourself for the unexpected, read  why you really need travel insurance or  get a quote from World Nomads .

How to get to Legazpi

By Air – You can fly to Legazpi from Manila or Cebu, using Cebu Pacific or Philippine Airlines.

By Bus – Buses run daily to Legazpi from Cubao Bus Terminal in Manila. There are several per day and you can easily book online using 12go Asia . The journey time is approximately 15 hours.

8 Things to do in Legazpi

From ziplines and ATV rides, to ethically swimming with whale sharks, here are the top things to do in Legazpi.

1. Mayon Volcano National Park

We had seen pictures of Mayon before arriving in Legazpi, however, it was quite surreal to see the perfectly coned shape with our own eyes. The view of Mount Mayon is so picturesque that it almost feels like an illusion.

Adventures in Legazpi revolve around getting up close and personal to this tremendous event of mother nature.  Often it’s a race against the clock, as 80% of the time you’ll find the volcano cloaked in thick clouds.  The best time of day to see Mayon unobstructed is first thing in the morning, although it’s not a guarantee.  With this in mind, I suggest spending 2-3 nights in Legazpi to increase your chances of getting a clear view.

On the other hand, while Mother Nature can be beautiful, you certainly do not want to feel her wrath. Mayon has reportedly erupted 47 times since 1616, k!lling thousands of natives and wiping out entire villages in its path. Most recently was in January 2018 when alert levels reached their highest and tens of thousands of people had to be evacuated.

While Mayon dominates the landscapes in Legazpi, for the best view we suggest heading to Lignon Hill, Cagsawa Park, or the Boulevard.

legazpi city tourist destination

2. ATV & Hiking Tours

ATV & Hiking Tours around Mayon are the most popular things to do in Legazpi. And an absolute must for adventure-seeking backpackers. There are many companies in the town offering different options to suit all interests and capabilities.  We can personally recommend  Bicolandia Outdoor Adventures  who offered competitive prices & a challenging, yet exhilarating route towards Mayon.

We did the ATV Tour and it did not disappoint – Within 5 minutes of setting off we were crashing our way through rivers and treacherous paths, surrounded by the most incredible scenery. It definitely isn’t for the faint-hearted but if you don’t feel confident to drive, then they will find a way to accommodate you. Unfortunately we chose a really cloudy day to do the tour, so we could barely see the volcano; however, the ATV experience alone was an incredible experience…

ATV Rides in Legazpi are by no means a cheap activity;  however, there are a couple of ways to help keep the costs down. First of all, there are a number of different trails to choose from, so be realistic about what you want from the experience and stick to your guns as they will always try to upsell you. Also, if you are in groups of 2, you can opt to share a bike and take it in turns to drive.  As fun as it is to drive, it’s nice to be able to sit back and enjoy the beautiful surroundings as well.

Price:  We opted for the 2006 Black Lava Trail – A 21km round trip, and paid 3500PHP for a 350cc Double Seater. You can find more information on the prices and routes here.

*Tip  – For the best chance to see Mayon in all it’s glory, opt for an early morning ATV ride.  It didn’t work out for us on this occasion, but hopefully, you will have better luck.

legazpi city tourist destination

3. Cagsawa Park

Cagsawa Park is home to the Cagsawa ruins – A 16th-century Franciscan church which seems was always destined to meet a tragic end.  Shortly after being built, Legazpi was invaded by Dutch Pirates and the church was destroyed.  It was later restored in the 1700s, only to be obliterated again in 1814 during a catastrophic eruption of Mount Mayon.  Today, only the church tower remains, but it is one of the historical points of interest in the city and well worth a visit.

If the ruins aren’t enough to convince you, perhaps the spectacular view of Mount Mayon will.  On a clear day you can get an unobstructed view of Mayon, and the lush surrounding landscapes make for some epic photo opportunities.  Other features in the park are the Cagsawa Museum and a selection of food & souvenir stalls.  You could easily spend a few hours here on a nice day enjoying the view and peaceful environment.

Entrance Fee:  Entrance to Cagsawa Park is 20 php/pax.

legazpi city tourist destination

4. Lignon Hill Nature Park

Lignon Hill is considered to be the city’s protector.  Standing at a height of 156-metres between Mayon and Legazpi, it has been known to block the flow of lava and protect the city from unimaginable devastation.  183,000 people reside in the city of Legazpi, so it’s easy to understand why the hill has come to have such a prodigious reputation.

On the contrary, a trip to Lignon Hill is one of the most adventurous things to do in Legazpi.  Boasting a 320m zipline, paintballing, cycling, hiking and more, there are enough activities to keep you occupied for hours on end.  At the same time, you can expect awe-inspiring views over the city, and of course, the tremendous Mount Mayon.

Entrance Fee : Entrance to Lignon Hill Nature Park is 20 php/pax, but you may have to pay more for certain activities.

legazpi city tourist destination

4. Zipline alongside Views of Mount Mayon

If you’re still feeling adventurous, ziplining alongside views of Mount Mayon is one of the most exhilarating things to do in Legazpi.  There are a couple you can choose from – one located upon Lignon Hill, and the other is nearby the lava wall of Mayon.  The latter can be accessed as part of your ATV or hiking tour, while Lignon Hill is accessible to everybody.

Neither zipline is particularly long or high, so it’s the perfect entry level flight if you’ve never done it before.  At the same time, even the most spontaneous souls will go crazy for the views!

6. Take a Stroll Along Legazpi Boulevard

Legazpi Boulevard is one of the most tranquil spots in the city, and going for a morning jog here was one of our favourite things to do. On a clear day, the view of Mayon across a glistening lake is one of the best you will find in the city.  Sadly, the volcanic black sand beach that hugs the coastline of the boulevard is full of trash; however, we enjoyed the view all the same.

The boulevard is particularly popular of an evening time, where a variety of restaurants and bars overlook the view of Mayon.  If you are lucky enough to visit on a clear evening, you can expect an unforgettable sunset views of the Philippines most active volcano.

7. Ethically Swim With Whale Sharks

Many who visit Legazpi are unaware that the city is just a 90-minute bus ride away from Donsol – A laidback beachside town which in recent years has transformed into a popular tourist hub where visitors can swim with whale sharks.

Unlike other whale shark interaction experiences in the Philippines, Donsol proudly promotes a sustainable tourism operation.  Unfortunately, human interaction with these gentle giants can have a negative impact on their natural life and instincts.  The eco-tourism initiative that Donsol have implemented means that there are rules and regulations in place that help protect them.

This kind of experience will never be entirely ethical for the species;  however, it was a relief to know that the whale sharks were not being lured with food or injured by boats getting too close.  While we were only able to see one whale shark for no more than 60-seconds, it was an easy sacrifice to make to know we weren’t negatively impacting them.

To catch a van to Donsol, head to Legazpi Grand Central Terminal located South of the Legazpi City Centre. From here the fare for the 1,5-hour van trip is 100 php/pax; however, keep in mind that the vans don’t run on fixed schedules. They only leave once they’re full or when you offer to make up the difference!

8. Sample the Local Chilli Ice Cream

As if things weren’t already hot enough in this city, one of the local delicacies is Bicol’s infamous Chilli ice cream.  No trip to Legazpi is complete without sampling this obscure combination of coconut milk and chilli, which surprisingly we really enjoyed!

You’ll be pleased to know that the ice cream is served in three different strengths, so if you’re a bit of a wimp with spice I would suggest ordering the mild.  We enjoy spice and went all in with the hot, and it’s safe to say it blew our heads off!

The traditional spot to enjoy this ice cream is at Colonial restaurant, although, various ice cream stalls sell their own version around the city.

Things to do in Legazpi – Where to Eat

Fuel your adventures in Legazpi at some of our favourite restaurants in the city.

Best for Local Food: Colonial Grill (Pacific Mall)

A favourite among locals for its delicious local food! The portions are generous and the prices reasonable. For dessert you must try the famous Sily Ice Cream (chilli ice cream) – you can choose from levels 1-3! Can you handle the heat?

Best For Junk Food: Shakey’s

For pasta, pizza and yummy appetiser dishes head to Shakey’s.

Best For Dinner With a View:  The Boulevard

There are a number of restaurants and cafes along the boulevard where you can enjoy a wonderful view of Mayon.

Best For Late Night Drinks:  Bar 101

Legazpi definitely isn’t a party town, but if you fancy some live music, karaoke & a few drinks with the locals then this is the place to go. Open until midnight.

Getting Around Legazpi

If you are experienced on a scooter, this will be your easiest way of getting around.  Scooter rental shops are limited, but if you ask your hotel they will point you in the right direction.  Rental prices start at around 600 (11$) php per day.

The cheapeast way to get around Legazpi is by using the public ‘Jeepney’s’.  These quirky local buses are impossible to miss & serve most routes around the city.  The challenge is identifying which Jeepney you need to take; however, the drivers are very helpful in this respect.

Finally, you will find several tricycles and taxis scouting the city; however, if you use them, be sure to haggle on the price!

What to Pack for Legazpi

Unsure of what you might need to pack for your adventures in Legazpi?  Don’t worry, we have got you covered.  Below are the  essential items that we carry with us on every adventure . But to ensure you don’t leave behind any of those backpacker essentials, here is our  free printable packing list .

1. REUSABLE WATER BOTTLE

It is no secret that single-use plastic is causing irreversible damage to our ecosystems, it is therefore imperative that as travellers, we try to minimise our consumption as much as possible.

We always carry a reusable water bottle and you will find that most hotels or hostels have a refill station.  Not only is it better for the planet but you’ll save cash too!

We Recommend: Stainless steel Insulated Water Bottles

2. VERSATILE WALKING SHOES

When going on any backpacking adventure, we always carry some versatile walking shoes with us.  We personally love the 2 in 1 shoes by  Aleader  as not only can we wear them hiking, but they act as water shoes too!

We Recommend:  Aleader 2 in 1 Hiking Shoes . Use code  OURTASTEFORLIFE15 for 15% off  your order.

3. GOPRO ACTION CAMERA & ADVENTURE KIT

If you want an action camera that is durable and safe to take in the water, then look no further than the Go Pro.  Small, lightweight, and easy to handle, you really ought to carry one of these with you on any backpacking adventure. Check out our full photography travel kit.

We Recommend: GoPro Hero 7 (White) Action Camera + Adventure Kit

4. QUICK DRY MICROFIBER TOWEL

They really do dry fast! Ultra-compact and lightweight so you can take to the beach easily. Not just the beach, this item is great for hiking, swimming, any outdoor adventure

We Recommend:  Microfiber Travel Towel

5. UNIVERSAL ADAPTOR

When you are travelling long-term across multiple countries, it’s hard to keep up with which adaptors you need to carry.  Not only does our universal adaptor work anywhere in the world, but we can also charge multiple devices at the same time.  This is a backpackers essential.

We Recommend: Universal Travel Adapter  with Dual USB Charging Ports

Travel Responsibly

As travellers, it should always be a top priority to travel responsibly.  We already leave a substantial carbon footprint just by flying to our travel destinations, so that’s even more reason to make a positive impact when we get there.

There are many  small steps you can take to becoming a responsible traveller,  and we highly encourage you to educate yourself before travelling to Legazpi. Here are some things you can do to minimise your footprint:

1. Do not leave any rubbish on the ground:  You would think this would go without saying;  however, there are some questionable humans who think it’s ok to throw trash on the ground.

2. Carry a Steripen or iodine tablets to sterilise water:  This not only limits your usage of single-use plastic but also saves you money too!

3. Respect the local culture:  Be courteous of the local culture and act in such a way that leaves a good impression.  Learn a little of the local language (hello and thank you is the minimum), greet the locals in a polite manner, and respect dress codes & traditions.

2024 ALBAY + LEGAZPI TRAVEL GUIDE (ITINERARY + BUDGET)

by thepinay solobackpacker | Mar 9, 2024 | Itinerary , Legazpi , Travel Guide | 0 comments

Comprehensive Legazpi Itinerary and Albay travel guide with sample budget and expenses, where to stay and places to visit in Albay.

Dominating the skyline of Legazpi and Albay is Mt.Mayon, the poster girl of the province. Known for its majestic beauty and almost perfect conical shape. Wherever you are in Albay, it seems as if Mt.Mayon is watching you. Indeed, nothing can encompass nature’s prowess and splendor. But there’s more to Albay, this massive province is oozing with raw appeal; flanked by vast, green farmlands, fishing towns, age-old churches, cave systems, aquamarine rivers, and lush mountains. You can also explore its rugged coastline, lapped by blue waters and dappled with tropical islands. Many of the rising tourist spots in Albay are blissfully uncharted by mass tourism, so best to visit soon before it gets too crowded.

To help you plan your trip, here’s a quick Albay + Legazpi Travel Guide with Legazpi itinerary and sample expenses and budget. Feel free to comment below if you want to suggest additional tourist spots in Legazpi and Albay, I didn’t include everything here as I’ve yet to visit them. But since Legazpi is just 3 hours away from my hometown, I can always travel there and update this Albay and Legazpi travel blog in the future.

WHERE TO STAY IN LEGAZPI/ALBAY

It is important to know beforehand where to stay in Legazpi or Albay when planning your Legazpi itinerary and Albay itinerary.  You can opt to stay in downtown Legazpi or in Daraga area.

Legazpi City is a convenient base because most of the restaurants, malls, and hotels are concentrated there. Embarcadero is also located in Legazpi City.

Daraga area is the quieter side and close to most of the Albay tourist spots, like Daraga Church where you can see Mt.Mayon, Ligñon  Hill, Daraga Church, Albay Park and Wildlife.

Tabaco is also a quiet, but it’s far from Legazpi City or Daraga, about 1 hour drive. It’s a good base for island hopping in Albay and if you want to cross to Catanduanes after.

Manila  to Legazpi Flight: RESERVE HERE

2.At the Bicol International Airport (Legazpi Airport), you can take the airport van/shuttle to downtown Legazpi, tricycle, or taxi. There’s no fixed schedule, the van leaves once full.

Here’s the Legazpi airport van/shuttle fare:

Alternatively, if you are traveling in a group, there are taxis at the Bicol International Airport (BIA). Fare will be based through Taxi Meter Charge only.  So, please make sure the driver turns on the meter and charge you based on the taxi meter reading only, including flag-down charges. Refuse the “ pakwayan rate” (charter rate without using the meter) to avoid overcharging.

Tricycles are also available, fare is roughly ₱200 ($4), good for 4 persons.

You can also take a bus from Manila to Legazpi. Travel time is approximately 12 hours. Fare starts at around ₱1,076  ($21). The bus trip ends at Legazpi Grand Central Terminal. Best to take it at night so you’ll arrive in the morning in time for your Legazpi itinerary.

GETTING AROUND LEGAZPI/ALBAY

Albay is a province in Bicol region, composed of 15 towns and 3 component cities (Legazpi, Tabaco, and Ligao). Most of the tourist spots in Albay are located in Daraga, Camalig, and Jovellar.  For island hopping in Albay, it’s near Tabaco.  So most likely, these are the areas that you will visit during your Albay and Legazpi itinerary –  Daraga, Camalig,  Jovellar, Legazpi City, and then Tabaco, if you plan to travel to Mayon Skyline or do island hopping in Albay.

There are many public vehicles in Legazpi and Albay, you can use them to get around.

Tricycles – There’s an abundance of tricycle in Legazpi city center that can take your directly to your destination.  This is your best bet if doing a DIY trip, so you’ll be able to visit the places in your Albay and Legazpi itinerary. Rate depends on the distance of your destination. I always use the tricycle when getting around Legazpi, even going to the airport. But always ask and negotiate the price before hopping in. Tricycle drivers in Legazpi are infamous for overcharging tourists. For short distance ride, for example, within Legazpi city center only, it shouldn’t cost you more than ₱20 ($0.38). If you’re in downtown Legazpi and you plan to go to Daraga area, it could cost you roughly ₱100 ($2) up.

Taxi – Cabs are available in Legazpi, always use the meter.  But you can charter a taxi for your Legazpi/Albay day tour. If you’ll hire the taxi for a day, make sure you negotiate the price first,  discuss the destinations in your Legazpi itinerary first, before hopping in. Usually chartered taxi rates start at roughly ₱3,500 ($67) for a day tour, good for 4 passengers.

BICOL AIRPORT TO HOTEL IN DARAGA (PRIVATE TRANSFER): RESERVE HERE

Jeepneys – A cheap way to get around Legazpi and Albay is by jeepney.  Fare starts at ₱10 ($0.19) from Daraga to Legazpi and vice versa. However, you need to know the routes to avoid riding the wrong one. You can read the route painted on the side of the jeepney and ask the driver to make sure it’ll pass by your destination.

Here’s some of the Legazpi jeepney routes that you might use during your  Legazpi trip if you want to commute or do a DIY Legazpi itinerary:

  • Daraga-Legazpi Loop 1: This is the jeep that you can take to get to Ligñon Hill and Albay Park and Wildlife.
  • Daraga – Legazpi (Tahao Road): . This is the jeep that you can take to get to the bus station (Legazpi Grand Central Terminal). You can also leave your luggage at the luggage counter in Pacific Mall while you do your last-minute shopping or at SM Legazpi.

Negotiate with driver for your trip back. ₱100 ($2) – ₱150 ($3) should be good for a roundtrip fare since the driver will wait for you.

QUITINDAY HILLS

Quitinday Hills is a cluster of green hills in the eponymous town of Quitinday. It’s  reminiscent of Osmena Peak in Dalaguete, Cebu and Chocolate Hills of Bohol. It easily became a popular tourist site in Albay, as it offers a scenic view of its surroundings with a backdrop of the unobstructed Mt.Mayon.

At Quitinday Hill, pay the ₱25 ($0.48) entrance fee. Hike uphill takes about 15 minutes.

Travel Tip: While you are at it, you may also visit Jovellar Underground River and Falls (Quitinday River and Falls), ask the driver if you can combine the tour. Fare is roughly ₱1000 ($20), good for 5 passengers. Combined tour may take about 5-6 hours, so, that’s a reasonable rate already since you’re hiring the tricycle for half-day.

JOVELLAR UNDERGROUND RIVER AND SIGPIT FALLS (Quitinday Underground River and Falls)

Though popularly known as Quitinday Underground River and Waterfalls, it is actually located in the town of Jovellar in Albay.  My guess is, because this is usually combined with a trip to Quitinday Hills, visitors must have assumed at first that it is located in Quitinday. The 2-tiered falls is actually called Sigpit Falls by the locals; its water originates from the Jovellar Underground River. Best time to see its teal water is during summer, as it becomes brownish during the rainy season.

  • No mask, no entry.
  • All tourists must undergo thermal scanning.
  • Fill out the Health Declaration Form.

MAYON SKYLINE

Location: Tabaco

About an hour away from Legazpi City is Mayon Skyline, you can visit this before or after your island-hopping trip in Albay since it’s in Tabaco. It has one of the best views of Mayon Volcano, but time your trip during a good weather because Mayon is usually blocked by clouds. Your best bet is an early morning visit as it can get rather cloudy in the afternoon. Otherwise, just try your luck in Cagsawa Ruins, Ligñon Hill, Sumlang Lake, Daraga Church, or Embarcadero.

ALBAY ISLAND HOPPING

Albay isn’t just about Mayon Volcano. There are also islands and beaches that you can visit in the province. A convenient jumping off point of Albay island hopping is Tabaco Port. From here, the islands are about 45 minutes to 1 hour by outrigger boats.

Here are some  of the islands that you can visit, they are located in Malilipot, Bacacay, and Tabaco:

  • Wara-wara Island
  • Pinamuntugan Island
  • Guinanayan Island
  • San Miguel Island

How to get there: From Legazpi or Daraga, take a van or jeepney to Tabaco, Albay. At Tabaco, ride a tricycle or padyak to Tabaco Port. Then from Tabaco port, hire a boat for island hopping. Island hopping rates depend on the boat capacity and the number of islands that you want to visit. Rate starts at ₱2,000 ($38).

Mayon volcano, Legaspi, Philippines

Last Updated on September 25, 2023

Albay district is famous for being home to the Mayon volcano, easily recognizable by its almost conical shape. Legazpi (or Legaspi) is the gateway to the province and a good base-camp to explore the surroundings. The 2460-meters high Mayon volcano is the Philippines’ most active volcano, it often erupts, so if you’re planning to climb it, check beforehand. For non-climbers, there are plenty of other tourist spots in Legazpi and things to do in the region.

When possible, climbing Mount Mayon is a challenge. The best season is from February to April, but even then, expect cold temperatures at night and frequent showers. You might have to wait at the base for a couple of days, waiting for the weather to improve. It takes a minimum of 2 days to reach the highest point, which is 2000-meters high (climbing higher is forbidden). You can arrange for a guide a the tourist office in Legaspi.

Cagsawa Ruins Park – The best tourist spot in Legazpi

Cagsawa ruin park, tourist spots in Legazpi

Destroyed by a volcanic eruption centuries ago, Cagsawa is now left in ruins and is one of Legazpi’s best tourist spots. Now, remains of buildings appear here and there and you can walk among what used to be a peaceful village. The church bell tower is pretty well preserved as well as the school. The park offers also one of the best views on the Mayon Volcano. If you’re lucky (or not if the volcano is really active), you might see some hot lava running along the volcano.

Cagsawa ruin park, tourist spots in Legazpi

To get to the park, take a jeepney from Legazpi bound for Guinobatan. Get out at the crossroad to the park. You can either walk or take a tricycle. On the way, you’ll notice a lot of operators renting ATV and offering to ride them towards the volcano.

Lignon Hill

Lignon Hill, tourist spots in Legazpi

This 2-kilometers trek is popular with locals as it offers plenty of activities. There you can zip line, go through hanging bridges, visit Japanese war tunnels and also rent ATV to see the Mayon volcano from up close. It’s also a great viewpoint to see the volcano on clear days.

Entrance fee: 25 pesos

Daraga Church

Entirely made of volcanic rocks, Daraga church was built in the 18 th century in a baroque style by Franciscan missionaries. The exterior is nicely decorated with many carvings and sculptures.

More traditional, you can also visit Albay Cathedral in Legazpi.

Saint Dominic of Guzman Church

Santo Dominic Guzman Church

Entirely made of volcanic rocks, this black church, built in 1820 in Santo Domingo, is impressive. You won’t see many churches this color.

Near Santo Domingo, there are a couple of amazing black sand beaches, literally covered with ashes. It mixes with the sand and gives it this amazing black/dark color. Nearby Calayucay Beach and Saogod beach are also worth the trip.

Hoyop Hoyopan Cave

Located 17 km west of Legaspi, the Hoyop Hoyopan Cave is one of the easiest cave to visit in the area. Its name means blowing wind. There you will see pieces of 2000 years old burial jars. You’ll also notice a concrete dance floor in the middle of the cave. People used to come here in the ’70s during martial laws to have some fun.

To get there from Legazpi you’ll have to take a jeepney to Camalig then another bound for Cotmon.

Price: 300 pesos for a group of up to 6 people.

If you like spelunking you can visit nearby Calabidongan cave also known as the bats’ cave. You’ll have to check first the water level, sometimes it’s too high to explore the cave. At any time of the year, you’ll have to get in the water so wear rubber shoes and bring a dry bag if you want to take your camera with you. The best time to visit is between April and May. Guides are mandatory and can be arranged at Hoyop Hoyopan cave.

Mirisbiris Garden and Nature Center

This nature center offers a couple of accommodations, a restaurant, and a beautiful garden. The place is really quiet and peaceful, surrounded by nature. The garden is a successful attempt to rebuilding the rain forest. It’s pretty big and offers a couple of easy treks. At the end of one, you’ll end up at a small rocky private beach. There’s a really nice snorkeling spot right in front of it and a lot of lava transformed in rocks by times.

The owner uses the profits to give scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds. He also tries to increase community awareness of the environment.

Try the Bicolano food

Bicol cuisine is known to be slightly different from the rest of the Philippines’ traditional dishes. Here, they often cook with coconut milk and chilies. One of Bicol’s most famous dishes is Bicol Express , made of pork, coconut milk, and chilies. The savory dish is a must-try if you’re in Bicol Province. You can also try Laing , made with taro leaves, shrimps, minced pork, and of course coconut cream and chilies.

10 Best Things To Do In Legazpi Philippines 2024

Sharing is caring!

In the eastern part of the Philippines lies Legazpi City. A short flight from Manila, the city sits in the shadow of Mount Mayon . A 20 million year old active volcano that offers both wild adventure and captivating history.

The off the beaten track destination of Legazpi Philippines has plenty to keep you busy for three days and can be combined with a trip to the Caramoan Islands , to really get a sense of this often overlooked region of Bicol Philippines .

As there is little tourist information online about Legazpi City, I’ve created a travel guide for you including the Top 10 Things to do in Legazpi Philippines.

This article may contain affiliate links. If you purchase through these links, I may earn a small commission at no additional cost to yourself. This helps towards the upkeep of this website for which I am grateful.

Where is Legazpi Philippines?

Legazpi City is the capital of Albay, in the region of Bicol located on the southern end of Luzon, the largest island in the Philippine archipelago.

Legazpi City used to be a small farming and fishing village but is now a bustling city, home to 200,000 people, and one of the Philippines’ top adventure tourism destinations.

This is mainly due to the world-famous Mayon Volcano, which provides plenty of adrenaline fuelled activities (see Top 10 Things to do in Legazpi ).

How To Get To Legazpi City Philippines

From Manila you can fly or drive to Legazpi City, depending on how much time and budget you have.

By Air – Legazpi Airport in Albay is serviced by Philippines Airlines, Cebu Pacific and Cebgo airlines.

The journey from Manila to Legazpi is only one hour by plane, and there are several flights running daily.

By Car or Bus – The drive from Manila to Legazpi is 500km taking 9 to 11 hours on average.

How Many Days in Legazpi

The perfect amount of time to spend in Legazpi City is two to three days, this gives you enough time to see and do everything on offer in the city of fun and adventure.

If you are visiting other destinations in Bicol , make sure you have at least a week so you can explore the top 3 places in the region , Legazpi City, the islands in Caramoan and Donsol.

When to Visit Legazpi Philippines

Due to its tropical rainforest climate, Legazpi City experiences a considerable amount of rainfall each year.

In terms of weather, January is the coolest month and March to May are considered summer months.

However, I visited during November, which was a great time of year, as it was still warm but not too as hot as summer, and all the outdoor activities were still possible.

Where To Stay In Legazpi City Philippines

As mentioned before, Legazpi City is off the beaten track , therefore big hotel chains and resorts have not yet made it to the Bicol region .

However there are plenty of hotels available including the Oriental Hotel Legazpi which is famous for its pool view of Mayon Volcano, and Casa Simeon which would be my recommendation, for its history and boutique feel (See #7 below).

10 Things to do in Legazpi Philippines

1. revel in the volcano views.

Not surprisingly, one of the main reasons why people flock to Legazpi City is to see the astonishing Mayon Volcano. In addition to being overwhelmingly beautiful, its perfect conical shape also features on the countries 100 Peso bill.

The Philippine’s most active volcano can be viewed from almost anywhere in the city as it towers over the landscape.

However for an unobstructed panoramic view of Mount Mayon I’d suggest visiting   Legazpi boulevard , Lingon Hill , Sumlang lake or Mayon Volcano observatory .

Ideal times are early mornings or late evenings when the tip of the volcano is less likely to be obscured by clouds.

2. Ride An ATV Around The Base Of Mayon Volcano

It wasn’t my first time on an ATV, in fact it wasn’t my first time on an ATV on a volcano (think back to Iceland last year).

However, my Mount Mayon ATV experience stood out as the highlight of my trip to Legazpi City.

Above all, it was an opportunity to get up close and personal with the active volcano that had been looming over us for our entire trip to the Philippines.

The road to Mayon Volcano was more like a dirt path, it took us through gullies, rivers, and fallen rock.

The entire trail was made by nature and by years of eruptions and fury.

As a result, the path was bordered by palm trees, able to grow tall and strong from the nutrient rich volcanic soil.

However as we drew closer to the foot of Mount Mayon the scenery changed drastically.

We were surrounded by large volcanic boulders, and it was hard to believe we were still in Legazpi Philippines!

A rain or shine activity, we chose the most advanced route, called the “Black Lava” trail .

The ATV ride lasted several hours and took us to 2100 ft elevation, where the lava rocks lay from the most recent eruption in 2006.

In short there are plenty of ATV routes to Mayon Volcano to choose from, some lasting as little as 45 minutes, so whatever your experience level or age, it is easy to find a Mayon ATV tour to suit you.

3. Zip Lining From The Base Of Mayon Volcano

A popular activity at the lava wall of Mayon Volcano is to try the 300 meter zip-line.

After the Mayon Volcano ATV tour , we spent a few minutes hiking the lava wall, to get a panoramic view of the area.

When it was time to head back I had the choice of either hiking back downhill or zip-lining all the way to the base camp.

As an adventure seeker, I obviously chose the latter, and even though the experience only lasted a short time, it was a fun way to end our day exploring Mount Mayon Volcano and at the price of 300 pesos ($5 USD) the zip-line hardly broke the bank!

View this post on Instagram                   Over the years I’ve had countless experiences with active and dormant volcanoes in 13 countries. ? From hiking and camping to mountain biking and ATV riding, the adrenaline rush coupled with the panoramic views over the clouds just can’t be beaten. If you want to try something different, I recommend volcano boarding in Nicaragua, bathing in a mud volcano in Colombia or ziplining off a lava wall in the Philippines (pictured above). . Is anyone else a bit of a volcano junkie? . #thewanderlustwithin #itsmorefuninthephilippines @philippines_uk #tpbgovph #UKblogsPH A post shared by Roshni | The Wanderlust Within (@thewanderlustwithin) on Jan 12, 2019 at 11:14am PST

4. Visit Legazpi Boulevard, Bicol Philippines

One of the top Legazpi tourist attractions is the boulevard.

Legazpi boulevard offers stunning views of Mount Mayon across a glistening lake.

A great place to sample Bicol’s street food but an even better place for unrivalled sunset views of the volcano.

In addition, Legazpi Boulevard is also a popular spot for running enthusiasts, and those wanting to practise their photography in the Philippines.

Most Legazpi tour itinerary include a visit to Legazpi boulevard as well as other Mayon Volcano tourist activities.

5. Relax At Sumlang Lake, Legazpi Philippines

A particularly tranquil hotspot for families, friends and couples, Sumlang Lake near Cagsawa Ruins , is a great day out in Legazpi Philippines.

Aside from the varied Bicolano cuisine on offer, the numerous local handicrafts on sale, and the unique close up view of Mayon Volcano.

Sumlang Lake also has ample opportunities to take part in water-sports such as kayaking, fishing, rafting and aqua biking, all great things to do in the Philippines.

6. Sample Bicol’s Famous Chilli Ice Cream

Legazpi City was the first time I’ve come across Chilli Ice Cream on a menu, but as the region is known for its spicy food it doesn’t surprise me #onlyinthephilippines as they say!

However 1st Colonial restaurant serves three different strengths of red hot ice cream topped with a real chilli.

Laced with local siling labuyo chilli and coconut milk, you might be pleasantly surprised at how well the combination of hot and cold work.

The three levels of spice exist so all customers can sample the unique ice cream.

Level 1 is suitable for children, Level 2 has a tickling and pinching sensation and Level 3 also known as the Mayon Volcano level – has the strongest kick, and is even served alongside an ounce of milk to balance the heat.

Chilli Ice cream can only found in the city of Legazpi, so which of the three spicy deserts would you be brave enough to try?

7. Take A Step Back In Time And Spend The Night In A Colonial House

A rich and glossy shade of brown adorns the wooden floors and walls of this beautifully restored 1920s colonial home.

Casa Simeon just outside Legazpi Philippines has recently opened as a guesthouse and restaurant, but has the most wonderful homely feel to it.

We didn’t get the chance to stay here (next time I hope!) but we enjoyed a three course home cooked meal with the family on our final night in Bicol Philippines .

We spent the evening sipping wine and hearing interesting tales from the colonial days, with this trip back in time.

8. Cagsawa Ruins Park, Legazpi Philippines

Just around the corner from Sumlang Lake is the Cagsawa Ruins Park.

It is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Legazpi and the ruins are the remains of a church that was built by the Franciscans in the 17th Century.

The church was destroyed by Dutch pirates and then again in 1814 when Mount Mayon erupted.

On a clear day you can see Mt. Mayon just behind the ruins, and this national treasure one of the most popular photography spots in Bicol Legazpi Philippines.

9. Daraga Church, Legazpi City Philippines

Daraga Church is one of the most popular tourist spots in Legazpi Albay.

Also known as the Nuestra Señora de la Porteria Parish Church, it was built in 1772 by the Franciscans in Daraga, Albay.

The unique white structure is made from volcanic rocks, and set on top of a hill with a clear view of Mt Mayon in the background, it’s no wonder Daraga Church is the most famous in Legazpi Philippines.

10. Busay Falls

Just outside Legazpi City, around a 45 minute drive away, are the enchanting Busay Falls .

One of the most popular tourist attractions in Albay, these 91 meter high waterfalls are a natural gem surrounding by a bustling forest.

The Busay waterfalls are actually made up of seven tiers , which is why they are often called ‘7 Falls’.

The first two levels of waterfalls are easy to reach but the others will require hiking to.

Where To Go Next After Legazpi City

Legazpi City is situated in the Philippines region of Bicol .

There are plenty of great attractions for tourists within Bicol but my favourites are diving with whale sharks in Donsol and visiting the hidden gem of the Caramoan Islands .

This jewel in the Camarines Sur is full of deserted islands just waiting to be discovered.

You will need at least three nights in the Caramoan Islands to explore everything on offer, including the island hopping and fresh seafood.

The journey from Legazpi to Caramoan involves a three hour drive to Sabang Port followed by two hours on a speedboat to the Caramoan Islands, which are dubbed one of the most beautiful islands in Asia .

On our first day, Rikka Atole took us to the Cagsawa Ruins for a walk followed by ATV. Bico was gracious to take our photos while guiding us through the wilderness at the foot of Mount Mayon. Next stop was Camalig for Quituinan and Sumlang Lake. Finally had late lunch at Dreamers Cafe. Then we pushed forward to Tiwi Pottery. Our second day consisted of two beautiful waterfalls- Busay and Vera. They are about an hour from each other. We had lunch at Gamboa's Orchard which is lovingly decorated with a lot of Santa Claus decor. Our driver for the first day is John then Mark for the second day. They were polite and made sure we were comfortable and enjoying our trip. Rikka is incredible! She took our picture even if it meant walking on narrow rice pathways or going between large boulders. She really took the extra mile for posterity. Overall, I would recommend GUIDE TO THE PHILIPPINES to friends and relatives.

Common Filipino menus also can be found quite easily. They include dishes like pork adobo, silog (fried rice in garlic), milkfish (bangus), and longganisa (pork sausages). The taste of the longganisa is sweet, quite similar to Ilocano’s longganisa.

How to Get There

Legazpi City is the center of transportation in the Bicol Region. It is strategically located in the middle of the region, between two other major cities in Bicol and is colloquially considered the “Gateway to South Luzon.” Legazpi also hosts the most modern airports, seaports, and transport terminals in the region.

The city is served by Legazpi Airport, the busiest Domestic Airport in Luzon, and with its runway of 2,280 meters (7,480 ft), it is capable of handling international aircraft. Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific Air have three flights each daily from Manila. Cebu Pacific’s third flight route is Manila-Legazpi-Cebu. Both Cebu Pacific and PAL use Airbus A319s and A320s. AirAsia Zest and PAL Express also have daily flights.

Legazpi can be reached through land transport (by bus) from Manila in about 10 hours, two hours less if the new Andaya Highway route is taken. The city has one of the most modern van and transport terminals in the country. More than 10 bus companies operate daily transport to and from Manila to Legazpi, making the city very accessible to commuters and tourists alike.

As of March 2012, The 10 1/2-hour Mayon Limited started traveling between Manila and Ligao, about 28 kilometers (17 mi) from Legazpi. That service would extend to Legazpi in 2013.
