Wealthy travelers are paying $17,000 a week for the most luxurious cabin on Silversea's new ultra-luxury cruise ship — see inside

  • Silversea Cruises ' new Silver Ray embarked on its maiden voyage in mid-June.
  • The ship's most luxurious 1,324-square-foot Otium Suites have amenities like a private hot tub and library.
  • The cabin starts at $17,000 per person in 2024, and it's mostly sold out for the year.

Insider Today

Silversea is one of the highest-end cruise lines on the market. So, as you can imagine, its new ship's most expensive suites are luxurious.

Like, really luxurious. And really expensive.

Silversea's new Silver Ray departed on its maiden voyage in mid-June. As is expected of Royal Caribbean Group's ritziest brand , the cruise line's 12th ship is outfitted with 364 of some of the most sumptuous suites at sea, the smallest of which already have a balcony, marble bathroom, and on-demand caviar.

Not too shabby, right?

Well, after seeing Silver Ray's most glamorous 1,324-square-foot Otium Suites, you could find yourself scoffing at its other accommodations.

Its balcony alone is larger than the ship's smallest suites. And its cost is more than three times that of the cheapest option.

In 2024, Silver Ray's Otium Suites start at $17,000 per person for a seven-day roundtrip cruise from Venice, Italy.

It's a steep price compared to the itinerary's least expensive $4,850 per person suite (there's an even cheaper category, but it's sold out for the sailing).

Despite the cost, Silver Ray's two Otium Suites are almost completely booked through 2024.

Upon entering, you're immediately greeted with the library and dining room — spaces you'd be hard-pressed to find in a typical cruise cabin.

Forgot a book? The reading nook is perfectly stocked for travelers interested in learning about bicycle brand Brompton ("The Brompton" by Will Butler-Adams and Dan Davies) and British microchip maker Arm ("The Everything Blueprint: The Microchip Design that Changed the World" by James Ashton).

Or, grab one of the neatly packaged games, such as tic-tac-toe and dominoes.

The dining table would be perfect for churning out a quick round of backgammon.

If you enjoy playing with a side of snacks, the fresh fruit bowl might do. Otherwise, you could call your butler for complimentary caviar or foie gras.

If it looks like a long game, brewing one of the bar's espresso pods or teas might be a good idea. Or, help yourself to some liquor, stocked according to the guests' preferences.

The dining table opens onto a living room with sprawling ocean views.

The couch can convert into a bed to sleep an additional guest. There's certainly ample room for three travelers, after all.

Take note of the chessboard and fresh-cut flowers, small touches that are, again, uncommon in the average suite.

If just one TV isn’t enough, you’re in luck. There’s another one in the bedroom.

most expensive cruise ship suite

It's also where you'll find the vanity, walk-in closet, and sizable bathroom — decorated with marble, of course.

Silver Ray’s cheapest suites have a dual vanity bathroom with a shower.

most expensive cruise ship suite

To out-luxe these cheaper accommodations, the Otium Suite comes with both a shower and a bathtub.

No need to worry about full privacy. The toilet is behind another closed door.

All of the ship's suites have balconies. None are as large as Otium's.

most expensive cruise ship suite

There's no need to hit the pool deck when your 431-square-foot balcony has a private hot tub, lounge chairs, and an outdoor dining table.

To compare, Silver Ray's smallest suites come with a 53-square-foot balcony. Size does matter, after all.

A private hot tub is included in the suite, which starts at $2,430 per person and day.

most expensive cruise ship suite

Hey, at least the cost includes a $399 spa treatment per person, too. Maybe a luxurious massage would help melt away the stress of the payment.

The 10 Most Expensive Cruise Ship Suites

The 10 Most Expensive Cruise Ship Suites

The Regent Suite on Regent Seven Seas Grandeur; photo: Regent Seven Seas Cruises

If you’ve got clients who demand only the best – and most expensive – options for their vacations, these 10 cruise ship suites should pique their curiosity. With pricing starting at more than $12,000 per night – and none less than $4,000 per night, the list is as notable for cruise lines that didn’t make it as for those that did.

Leading the list is the Regent Suite from Regent Seven Seas Cruises, a spot the cruise line has firmly held onto for several years. But rounding out the top three are two newcomers, travel advisors may not be as familiar with – The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection and Scenic.

Cruise lines you might have expected to find, but didn’t make it into the top 10? Those include Seabourn and Crystal Cruises, with their most expensive suites coming in under $4,000 a night.

1. Regent Seven Seas Cruises – Regent Seven Seas Grandeur: Regent Suite RS, $12,333/night

By far the most expensive cabin at sea we came across is Regent Seven Seas Cruise’ Regent Suite RS on the Seven Seas Grandeur. For a nine-night sailing from Barcelona to Rome in 2024, the brochure cost was just over $110,000 per person.

Of course the massive suite – its 3,151-square-feet – is pretty spectacular featuring two bedrooms, a private 1,292-square-foot balcony with whirlpool, three walk-in closets, an in-suite spa retreat complete with sauna, steam room, and jetted tub, and more.

Perks for staying in the suite include free laundry and dry cleaning, free first class air for domestic flights and free business class air for international flights, a complimentary one-night pre-cruise hotel package including ground transfers and breakfast, free unlimited Wi-Fi onboard, a personal car and guide to explore ashore at no extra cost, free in-suite spa services, a personalized in-suite full liquor bar set-up, and much, much more.

2. The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection – Evrima: Owner’s Suite, $9,914/night

Not lagging too far behind is the Owner’s Suite on Evrima, which a spokesperson for The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection told TMR went for a high of $69,400 per person for a one-week 2023 sailing from Marseille to Rome.

Considerably smaller than the Regent Suite, the Evrima Owner’s Suite is still a sizeable 1,091 square feet and has a 635-square-foot balcony terrace featuring a private whirlpool.  The one-bedroom suite features a living and dining area with convertible sleep sofa, a walk-in wardrobe, two bathrooms, both with toilets, and one with a double vanity, soaking tub, and separate shower, and the second with only a shower.

Perks included with the room are 24-hour in-suite dining, a mini-bar provisioned to your preferences, complimentary Wi-Fi, free chilled bottle of Champagne upon arrival, espresso machine with complimentary coffee and teas, and more.

3. Scenic – Scenic Eclipse I: Owner’s Penthouse, $8,086/night

We found roughly the same pricing on a number of eight-night sailings aboard Scenic Eclipse I and II, but here we’re quoting a 2024 Italian Treasures sailing in an Owner’s Penthouse from Civitavecchia to Valletta, which came in at $64,690 per person.

One of the largest suites at sea, the 2,099-square-foot suite features a spacious terrace with lounge area and private spa pool, in-suite dining with seating up to eight people, a spa bathroom with dual vitality mist shower with color light therapy, two bathrooms, a walk-in wardrobe, and more.

Perks included with the suite include a complimentary one hour in-suite spa treatment per guest, free laundry service, a full mini-bar stocked with alcoholic and soft drinks personalized to your preference, daily canapes and petit fours, and more.

4. Norwegian Cruise Line – Norwegian Viva: Haven Premier Owner’s Suite with Large Balcony, $7,683 night

For years, the line’s three-bedroom Garden Villa (on Dawn- and Jewel-class ships) rated as NCL’s most expensive suite. With the arrival of the Viva-class, that distinction now goes to the Haven Premier Owner’s Suite. At its most expensive – a 2024 Christmas/New Year’s cruise – the per night pricing comes in at more than $10,000 per person, per night. However, we found most sailings in 2024 and 2025 ranged between $7,000 and $7,700 per person, per night.

The 2,100-square-foot aft-facing suite can hold up to eight people and features an 828-square-foot curving balcony with hot tub, separate living and dining areas, three bedrooms with king-sized beds, a double sofa bed, three bathrooms with jetted showers, a guest half-bath, and more.

Amenities include the services of a butler and concierge, as well as white tablecloth in-suite dining, 1 bottle of Moet Champagne upon embarkation, custom selection of liquor, along with daily replenishment of bottled water and sodas, invites to exclusive breakfast and lunches, a cocktail party with the ship’s officers, access to an exclusive sundeck, pool and lounge, and much, much more.

5. Celebrity Cruises – Celebrity Ascent: Iconic Suite, $5,800

Generally speaking, Celebrity doesn’t usually rank in the top 10 for most expensive suites at sea, but during the holiday season, prices for a one-week sailing in an Iconic Suite on the Edge-class can exceed $40,000 a person.

The 1,892-square-foot Iconic Suite, located in The Retreat on Edge-class ships, feature two bedrooms and two bathrooms – one with whirlpool tub, a 689-square-foot terrace with hot tub, dining space for up to six people, and a private butler’s pantry.

Included in the fare for Iconic Sites are butler service, complimentary bottled water, soda and beer stocked daily, unlimited lunch and dinner in all specialty restaurants, two complimentary bottles of premium spirits, complimentary unlimited premium drinks and Wi-Fi, onboard gratuities, complimentary laundry service (twice per cruise), an in-room Peloton, onboard credit, and more.

6. Cunard Line – Queen Mary 2: Grand Duplex, $4,930/night

Cunard might not be the first line that comes to mind when thinking of the cruise industry’s most expensive suites, but the line’s Grand Duplex on Queen Mary 2 is right up there near the top with the most expensive fare we found, for a 2024 one-week Eastbound transatlantic crossing, starting at $34,518.

These opulent suites measure 1,600 square feet with a 645-square-foot balcony, and feature an elegant Art Deco-inspired spiral staircase with a master bedroom and bathroom located on the second level. The suite also offers a full dining area, guest bathroom, and even a small exercise area.

Amenities and perks included with a stay in a Grand Duplex suite include butler service, a reserved table in the Queens Grill restaurant, minibar stocked with two bottles of pre-selected wine or spirits and soft drinks, bottle of Champagne on arrival, priority tender service, and more.

7. Royal Caribbean International – Icon of the Seas, Ultimate Family Suite, $4,900

The Ultimate Family Suite is the only stateroom on this list that we had difficulty finding pricing for. Why? Because on just about every sailing currently open for booking (on all four ships that have it – Symphony, Spectrum, Wonder of the Seas, Icon of the Seas), the suite is sold out. With the help of a travel advisor, we were able to find one sailing, a one-week December cruise in 2024, priced at $34,295 per person. But keep in mind, this suite can be priced upwards of $75,000 per person during holiday season, which would push it higher on this list.

This two-level suite is the “ultimate” playground for families, complete with an in-suite slide to get quickly from level two to one. The oversized balcony has games like air hockey and table tennis, as well as a Jacuzzi. Inside there’s a private game room complete with multiple video game systems.

Like other Star-tier Royal Suite Class accommodations, the Ultimate Family Suite includes access to a Royal Genie, stocked minibar, complimentary alcoholic and soft drinks, and complimentary specialty dining, VOOM Internet access, and gratuities. Other perks include expedited boarding and departure, suite lounge, sun deck and Coastal Kitchen access, free admission to the Thrill Waterpark at Perfect Day at CocoCay, and more.

8. Explora Journeys – Explora I, Owner’s Residence, $4,700

Explora Journeys may not even be sailing yet, but its Owner’s Residence still manages to find its way onto our list of the most expensive cruise suites at sea. As just one example, we found a 2024 nine-night cruise in the Middle East that prices out to $42,350 per person.

These suites, which feature balconies almost as big as the actual suite (1,668 square feet of interior space with 1,345-square-foot balconies), have separate living, dining (for up to six guests), and bedroom areas. There’s also a Master Bath with private steam room, and the ocean-front balcony is furnished with a large whirlpool, day beds, and dining and lounge areas.

Perks that come with stays in the Owner’s Residence include roundtrip home to airport ground transfers (up to 50 miles each way from/to airport), complimentary pre- or post-cruise hotel night, complimentary treatment at the spa, private driver ashore, butler service, a mini-bar replenished according to your preferences, and much, much more.

9. Silversea Cruises – Silver Nova: Owner’s Suite, from $4,500/night

10. Disney Cruise Line – Disney Dream: Concierge Royal Suite with Verandah, $4,336/night

While Disney Wish is a newer ship – and its Concierge Wish Tower Suite is the biggest stateroom in the Disney fleet – the pricing on the Concierge Royal Suite with Verandah on Disney Dream still comes in higher. For a seven-night roundtrip sailing from Barcelona in 2024, the per-person price comes in at just over $30,350.

The 1,781-square-foot one-bedroom suite features a master bedroom with queen bed, two bathrooms including a master with double sinks, a rain-style shower, and whirlpool tub, an oversized balcony with a whirlpool tub, a separate living room with two pulldown beds (one double, one single), an open dining salon, and pantry and wet bar stocked with water and sodas.

Concierge-level perks include free Wi-Fi, a pillow menu, pre-arrival and onboard concierge services such as pre-reserving onboard activities and services, a private welcome reception, in-suite dining, priority tendering, and exclusive access to a Concierge Lounge and sun deck.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises will sail what may well be the most expensive commercial cruise ever in 2027: an around-the-world trip with prices ranging from just under $100,000 to almost $1 million per person.

Sound over the top? Yes, for most travelers. But the luxury line expects the cruise will break company sales records, just as many of its past world cruises have, often selling out the day bookings opened.

“People are more eager than ever to embark on once-in-a-lifetime luxury travel experiences,” said Andrea DeMarco, president of Regent Seven Seas Cruises. “In fact, over the past few years, we’ve received continued interest and increasing demand for our world cruises as discerning travelers want to venture further and for longer durations. Now more than ever, people do not want to wait for opportunities to pass them by.”

Indeed, weeks- and even months-long world cruises have become a popular travel style in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in the luxury and upscale cruise markets.

To meet the growing demand, Regent’s 2027 world cruise will be the first aboard one of the company’s largest and newest explorer class ships, the 746-passenger Seven Seas Splendor , which launched in 2020. The ship has 373 suites across 15 categories, ranging from the 307-square-foot Veranda Suite to its lavish, one-of-a-kind 4,443-square-foot Regent Suite.

Perched on the 14th deck, the Regent Suite has unobstructed 270-degree views over the ship’s bow from a 1,300-square-foot wraparound veranda. A glass-enclosed solarium offers a view that mirrors that of the captain’s from the bridge. The over-the-top accommodation also has its own spa retreat complete with a personal sauna, steam room, and Jacuzzi, as well as original Picasso artworks adorning the walls, a custom Steinway Grand Maroque Piano by Dakota Jackson, and a handcrafted Hästens Vividus mattress, which retails for more than $200,000, topped with the finest bed linens and pillow styles.

The bed in the Regent Suite of the Seven Seas Splendor features a handcrafted Hästens Vividus mattress, which retails for more than $200,000.

Regent Suite guests will also have a dedicated butler, a full bar, and a personal car and driver in every port.

Fares for the 140-night voyage, which departs on January 11, 2027, start at $91,499 per guest for a Veranda Suite and go up to $839,999 per guest for the opulent Regent Suite. Travelers who prefer a slightly shorter journey can sail a 126-night Miami-to-Rome voyage, with fares ranging from $84,999 per guest up to $755,999 per guest.

So, what exactly does one get for those prices?

Fares for the World of Splendor sailing include first-class round-trip flights, door-to-door luggage service, 486 shore excursions, specialty dining, wine and spirits, unlimited Wi-Fi, and unlimited laundry and dry cleaning.

The sailing will visit 73 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the ancient site of Petra in Jordan.

Where will the ship go?

For this 140-day world cruise, the Seven Seas Splendor will sail from Miami to New York, visiting 71 ports of call (including 14 overnight stays) in the Caribbean, South Pacific, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Africa, and Europe. Guests will travel 35,668 nautical miles across 3 oceans, exploring 40 countries on 6 continents.

Over more than four months, passengers will have the opportunity to celebrate Carnival in Panama City, visit a Sri Lankan street festival in Colombo, and step back in time during an exclusive Roaring ’20s–themed event in Málaga, Spain, that will feature haute couture and vintage automobile displays. The itinerary includes visits to 73 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, among them Kakadu National Park in Australia, Singapore Botanic Gardens, Elephanta Caves in India, and Palmeral of Elche near Alicante, Spain.

An outdoor dining area on the 'Seven Seas Splendor' featuring multiple tables and chairs with blue umbrellas and views of the sea

There are nine dining venues on board the Seven Seas Splendor , including alfresco eating areas, in addition to wellness options, cooking classes, and entertainment.

What’s there to do on board?

The ship has a full spa and wellness center with included classes and activities led by fitness and mindful living experts. There’s a culinary arts kitchen for hands-on cooking lessons, evening entertainment, and nine dining venues, ranging from Compass Rose, offering a customized menu each night of the cruise, to Pan-Asian outpost Pacific Rim and the elevated steakhouse Prime 7. There’s also a French bistro called Chartreuse, and Sette Mari at La Veranda serves Italian fare with stunning ocean views.

Under parent company Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, Regent Seven Seas is part of the company’s larger Sail and Sustain program , which invests in ways to reduce emissions and the environmental impact of the fleet through investments in new and evolving green technologies. It also encompasses Regent’s Eco-Connect Tours , on which passengers can engage with local communities that are promoting sustainable tourism initiatives like biodynamic and organic wine production in Bordeaux, France, and visiting a sloth sanctuary in Costa Rica.

Regent’s 2027 World Cruise is currently open for bookings either by calling (844) 4-REGENT or by visiting the Regent website .

Inside the Most Expensive Suite on the World’s Most Expensive Cruise Ship

Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas — the biggest and most expensive ( $1.35 billion ) cruise ship ever created — will set sail from Barcelona on Friday.

After accepting the new ship last week , Royal Caribbean took back the record for world’s largest cruise ship. Ahead of the ship’s maiden voyage, the cruise line is revealing what passengers can expect onboard.

Families who rent out the most expensive room on the world’s most expensive cruise ship will be treated to a superlative experience. The Ultimate Family Suite is spread across two levels of the ship and takes up 1,346 square feet.

Although there is plenty to do on the rest of the ship, guests in the suite won’t ever have to leave their quarters. The accommodation features a ping-pong table, an air hockey table, and a slide to get from the top floor to the bottom. There’s also a full-size whirlpool hot tub on the balcony — complete with unobstructed views of the water.

Kids will be delighted by the suite’s Lego wall, 3-D cinema room and popcorn machine. The Family Suite can sleep up to eight people, all of whom have access to a personal butler.

Throughout the summer, the ship will sail across the Mediterranean, making stops in Spain, France and Italy. In November, the Symphony of the Seas will make its way to Miami, from where it will depart on trips through the Caribbean. But the “ultimate” family experience doesn’t come cheap. A family of four can book the suite for a seven-day cruise starting at $50,000 .

Inside the world's most expensive cruise ship suite

cruise bedroom

(Mark Ashman/Regent Seven Seas Cruises)

Love to cruise but can't stand the crowded buffets and over-booked shore excursions?

Onboard  Regent Seven Seas Cruises ’ new ship Seven Seas Explorer—which begins sailing to the Caribbean from Florida this December— guests in the luxurious Regent Suite will enjoy a  private car with driver and guide in every port, business or first class airfare as well as private sedan transfers to and from the airport-- and even unlimited laundry and pressing during your trip.

So what's the catch? The suite is $10,000 a night per couple.

Love luxury? Check out the Regent Seven Seas' Explorer

The expansive suite is 4,443 square feet and comes equipped with an in-room spa retreat--a first at sea--complete with a treatment area, full sauna, ceramic heated relaxation loungers and multi-jet shower.

cruise spa

Here’s what else you get for your money:

--A lavishly decorated two-bedroom suite at the ship’s bow on deck 14 with marble, exotic woods, handcrafted furnishings, a golden chandelier and plenty of floor to ceiling windows to enjoy the sea views.

--An oversized hot tub enclosed by glass and adjacent to the spa retreat.

--Stellar 270-degree  ocean views from the massive wraparound veranda and glass-enclosed Vista Garden.

--A stocked marble bar with black lacquered stools for entertaining new found friends. The bar is fully stocked with top-shelf liquor that guests can enjoy at their leisure.

--A custom Steinway Arabesque piano.

--Free pre-cruise hotel stay.

--A media center with a collection of limited-edition art books, artifacts and Murano glass bowls. Of course, there’s another huge HD TV in the master bedroom as well.

Carrying only 750 guests (while many large liners carry over 5,000), the Explorer boasts one of the highest space ratios in the cruise industry. The line is also spearheading the trend of luxury cruise lines toward all-inclusive pricing.

bar on ship

This comes amid increased demand for luxury travel options, according to the Cruise Lines International Association. Major cruise lines, including Norwegian and Royal Caribbean, say their most expensive suites with extra amenities are the first to sell while specialty lines now tout everything from exclusive tours to butler services to alcohol.

Now,  Crystal Cruises offers complimentary alcohol, “You Care, We Care” voluntourism excursions and specialty dining, among other perks. Windstar’s yachts in warm weather climes have a Water Platform with complimentary water sports--kayaking, sail-boarding, even water skiing.

Cruise Critic recently named Viking Ocean Cruises the “Best Luxury Cruise Line for Value,” noting that the line, which will add two ships in 2017, has adopted inclusions traditional in its river cruises and other river cruising brands—complimentary wine and beer at meals, transfers, Wi-Fi and  in this case, use of the Nordic Spa with its thalassotherapy pool, steam room, hot tub and first “snow grotto” at sea. Guests get an included shore excursion in every port, port taxes and fees and more—adding up to more than $200 per person per day. Cruises start at just under $2000 per person.

But few go as far as Regent Seven Seas, which offers “exceptional exclusivity,” says Colleen McDaniel, Senior Executive Editor at Cruise Critic.

7 over the top cruise shows setting sail this year

All guests receive airfare–business class for international flights—free unlimited shore excursions, specialty dining, alcoholic beverages throughout the ship and in your minibar, ground transfers and gratuities. Those booking on the concierge level or above get even more including the free pre-cruise hotel stay.

On many cruises, drinks and specialty restaurants add up fast and can ultimately cost more than the cruise itself. Regent Seven Seas all-inclusive pricing starts around $5,000 for two.

“For travelers who like transparency and prefer not to receive a final bill at the end, a luxury or river cruise can be a great option that delivers value,” suggests McDaniel. “However, travelers are advised to consider what they’ll receive for their fare and assess how it meets their individual needs. For example, some lines offer unlimited alcoholic beverages, yet for those who don’t drink this won’t necessarily add value.”

Some people say that the room doesn’t matter. You’ll spend most of your time out and about, so why pay more for where you sleep? But we know better. Your suite becomes your sanctum — especially when sailing along a river or voyaging across the sea on a cruise .

Rest those sea legs in style when you opt for the most lavish and exclusive stateroom on board your chosen cruise.

While top-of-the-line suites vary from vessel to vessel and company to cruise line , they consistently bestow capaciousness and glamorous interiors, some form of superior butler or concierge service, better placement on the ship, and complimentary perks like priority embarkation and extra meals.

Many also offer VIP spaces — think a hotel within a hotel — for top-level suite holders only. Ready to set sail? These suites are sure to seal the deal.

Formerly known as the River Countess, Uniworld’s SS La Venezia re-emerged in 2021 as an homage to quixotic 1930s Venice. In fact, it took its first float along the Venetian Lagoon. With romantic dark woods, sumptuous fabrics inspired by textile designer Fortuny and flourishes of Murano glass, the vessel sets a bygone mood.

Pretend to be a character in an Agatha Christie mystery when you book the 302-sq-ft, art-filled Grand Suite, designed to reflect various aspects of the European destinations where Uniworld sails. Combine train travel with sailing on the 18-day Cruise & Rail: Milan , Venice & Istanbul itinerary, a comprehensive west-meets-east journey that starts in Italy on July 22 and passes through the Balkan Peninsula.

Atlas Ocean Voyages is the first new luxurious cruise line to debut in Florida in two decades / ©Atlas Ocean Voyages

Some cruisers have done it all. Those hankering for something novel will be gobsmacked by Atlas Ocean Voyages, the first new luxurious cruise line to debut in Florida in two decades. The inventive brand first set sail in 2021. In the news for sponsoring a McEnroe brothers’ tennis extravaganza on a February cruise in Antarctica (the first professional tennis match ever executed on that continent), the imaginative cruise line has taken great care to weave sports, history, nature and adventure into each itinerary.

An upcoming golfers’ voyage, for example, features opportunities to play some of the world’s most enticing links on a 13-day trip, departing June 17 (among other dates) to the British Isles, with stops in Northern Ireland and Scotland’s Greenock and Loch Ness. Aboard the first of many ships to come, guests on Atlas’s World Navigator (described as more yacht style than cruise vessel) will have the chance to pursue smaller ports, off-the-beaten-path destinations, narrow channels and shallow waters.

Nestle into the Navigator Suite, a one-bedroom, 465-sq-ft personal harbor complete with soaking tub and veranda. Perks include complimentary air travel and shore excursions. Go from Málaga to Rome on a 13-day voyage, which departs May 1.

Quasar Expeditions

Grace Kelly cruise Suite

As elegant as the actress who chose it as the vessel for her honeymoon when she married Prince Rainier, the assiduously refurbished M/Y Grace , reconditioned specifically to navigate through the Galápagos, holds just 16 lucky guests. The most discriminating of them will choose the Grace Kelly Suite, which was completely refurbished in 2017.

As a haven a deux, it features contemporary decor by celebrated designer Adriana Hoyos that reflects vintage Hollywood swank. The 183-sq-ft regal hideaway is truly one of a kind, with classic wooden furniture and nearly 360-degree views of the Galápagos’ trove through panoramic windows.

A safari-style adventure cruise company with exemplary guides, Quasar Expeditions boasts a fleet of ships with large decks, ideal for whale watching and wildlife spotting. Consider the eight-day Following in Darwin’s Trail cruise, which nips around the islands following in his footsteps, offering snorkeling, nature hikes, kayaking and more.

There’s no shortage of room here. Bring the family on any of Windstar’s three all-suite ships ( Star Legend, Star Breeze and Star Pride ), where already huge Owner’s Suites can be enlarged by adding adjoining rooms to create Grand Owner’s Suites. When the living space is expanded to an eye-widening 1,374 sq ft replete with three bedrooms, three-and-a-half bathrooms, and balconies aplenty, these brood-sized accommodations have personal space in spades.

For cruisers seeking more characteristic rooms, the nautically themed Officer’s Suite on board Wind Surf, a five-masted schooner and Windstar’s flagship vessel, can’t be beat. Conceived for true aficionados, it lies among the officer’s quarters, behind the bridge, in an area labeled ‘crew only.’

Thought to be the only suite of its kind at sea, the 242-sq-ft oasis is kitted out with sailworthy decor such as a sextant, a model ship and binoculars, and puts guests in the relished company of the captain and his sea-minded purview. On Star Breeze, consider the 11-day Alaskan Splendors (Vancouver to Anchorage), or the 8-day Spanish Symphony (Lisbon to Barcelona) on Wind Surf for the Officer’s Suite experience. It’s available four dates in 2022.

Best-known for culturally intoned river sails and spirited ocean itineraries, the ever-sophisticated Viking Cruises has responded to the world’s fascination for adventurous quests with the 2022 launch of two expedition vessels.

With plans to venture to remote ports and delve into ‘best-at-sea’ enrichment, programs have been created to allow guests to work side by side in laboratories with onboard scientists doing real-life destination studies. Guests staying on one of the smaller-sized ships (less than 400 passengers) will be treated to many of the same stellar amenities as the rest of Viking’s fleet.

Complimentary expedition equipment — kayaks and Zodiacs — will take guests closer to wildlife than imaginable. Enjoy these tutorials in supreme comfort in either ship’s 1,223-sq-ft Owner’s Suite, a two-roomed refuge that features a living/dining area and bedroom, plus an almost 800-sq-ft private garden with a Norwegian wood-sided hot tub and outdoor dining table.

Depart April 9 on the Viking Octantis to explore the tropical islands of Barbados, St Barths and more on the Caribbean Connections cruise.

Taking Disney’s renowned storytelling to new heights, the Disney Wish launches in June 2022 with a maiden cruise from Cape Canaveral, Florida to Nassau, Bahamas, including a stop on Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay, and a promise to conjure magic on other similar cruises throughout the year. Key to the new ship’s buzz is AquaMouse: A Minnie and Mickey Mouse-themed, onboard water attraction that promises screams of delight as undulating slides corkscrew above the decks for lengths totaling 760 ft.

Adjacent to the fun, six swimming pools planted in tiers will offer repose. Make like Disney royalty and retire for quiet time in the novel, penthouse-like Wish Tower Suite. It prevails as Disney Cruise Line’s most unique and luxurious accommodation yet. Encompassing nearly 2,000 sq ft of living space with room for eight, Wish Tower has two main bedrooms, a children’s space, a library that converts to a bedroom, and four-and-a-half bathrooms. A two-story window wall connects the outdoor views with blue-hued, Oceania-centric interiors focused on Disney’s beloved character Moana.

Film-inspired art (think: a statue with its own soundtrack, special lighting and audio effects) and amenities such as VIP access to the concierge lounge and a dedicated personal concierge team to organize bespoke activities will coddle Disney lovers large and small.

Oceania Cruises

Ralph Lauren Home Owner’s Suites, Marina and Riviera

most expensive cruise ship suite

Furnished exclusively by Ralph Lauren Home, the cruise suites are spread across the ships’ beams / ©Oceania Cruises

Both art lovers and gastronomes lap up the aesthetic offerings on board Oceania Cruises’ Marina and Riviera. The ships are hung with more than 2,000 works of fine art, collectively (from the likes of Miró and Picasso) — pieces meant to be beheld while guests converse over such norms as six-course Dom Pérignon dinners. With the brand’s classy vibe, a guest wouldn’t be shocked to see designer Ralph Lauren as a fellow passenger, his all-American cruise wear like a beacon on board.

So it’s no surprise that Oceania chose the icon himself to design and impart his old-money, casual-chic perspective to the 2,000-sq-ft Owner’s Suites, located on both ships. Furnished exclusively by Ralph Lauren Home, the cruise suites spread across the ships’ beams, featuring indoor and outdoor whirlpool spas, an ebony player piano, an extravagant bar, a living room, a bedroom (replete with Oceania’s beloved Tranquility Beds) and a grand foyer anchored by a limestone and black cabochon inset floor.

Immense windows dressed with Ralph Lauren Grimaldi-weave sail fabric showcase the surrounding sea, where azure tones complement Lauren’s indoor camel, bone and navy motifs. Book the suite for Marina’s 12-day Mediterranean Splendors adventure, which sets sail from Istanbul to Lisbon by way of phenomenal highlights, such as Santorini and Seville.

10 Incredible Suites You Wouldn’t Believe Are on Cruise Ships

Cruise ships have come a long way since the early days of cramped staterooms dressed in staid colors. Now, top architects and designers vie for the opportunity to design the suites aboard luxury vessels. Upholstery accents throughout may range from cashmere to crocodile, and it’s not uncommon for works by world-class artists to grace the walls. Plus, the perks that may come with these top-notch suites are compelling: 24/7 butler service, priority embarkation, VIP access to the ship’s restaurants and entertainment, and entrance to private areas for suite passengers only. What Makes a Disney Cruise Expensive?

Several factors contribute to the cost of a Disney cruise :

  • Stateroom Category – The Prime Factor Your choice of accommodations is the single most significant influence on cruise cost. While inside staterooms offer a cozy retreat, concierge-level suites truly elevate the experience—and the price. For more information on accommodations, check out our What’s Included in Disney Cruises and the Best Staterooms on Disney Cruise Line .
  • Cruise Duration and Itinerary Longer Disney cruises and exotic destinations naturally come with higher price tags. DCL offers shorter cruises ranging from 2-night getaways to extended journeys lasting 14 nights or more. Learn more about 2025 Disney Cruises and 2026 Disney Cruises .
  • Ship Selection DCL’s newest ships – the Disney Wish and the upcoming Disney Treasure – often have higher price points due to their state-of-the-art amenities and fresh appeal. For more information, check out our articles about Top Disney Cruise Ship for Kids and Ranking Disney Cruise Ships .
  • Sailing Season Peak travel periods, such as summer vacations or holiday seasons, usually see higher prices across all categories. See our article on The Best Time to Go on Disney Cruises and Cheapest Month for Disney Cruises .

The Most Expensive Suite on Disney Cruise Line

1. tower suite : the pinnacle of luxury.

The most expensive suite on Disney Cruise Line is the Tower Suite, located in the forward funnel of some newer Disney ships.

On the Disney Wish, this 1,966-square-foot, two-story penthouse is elegantly themed (inspired by Moana) and can accommodate up to eight guests . During a tour of the Wish, I had the chance to see this incredible suite up close, and it was breathtaking.

  • Two main bedrooms
  • A children’s room
  • Four and a half bathrooms
  • Dining room

During a recent cruise, I spoke with a family who stayed in this suite, and they raved about the private verandah with a whirlpool tub and the floor-to-ceiling windows in the master bathroom.

This suite features two main bedrooms and three full bathrooms and can sleep up to six people . It includes a large living area, open dining room, pantry, stocked wet bar, and two walk-in closets. Depending on the sailing dates and demand, prices for this suite can reach up to $30,000 for a seven-night cruise .

The 7 best cruise ship suites — picked by someone who has seen them all

Gene Sloan

One of the biggest stories in the cruise world over the past couple of decades has been the arrival of a new generation of superlarge, superswanky cruise ship suites that are chock-full of every sort of upscale feature and amenity you could imagine. They are sights to behold.

Some of the biggest of these cruise ship suites measure 2,000 square feet or more — approaching the size of the typical American home. A handful go far beyond that.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

I haven't stayed in all of these new cruise ship suites. But over more than 25 years of writing about cruise ships, I've toured pretty much all of them. I can't think of any major cruise ship suite that I've missed other than Disney Cruise Line's new Tower Suite on Disney Wish, which I hope to get to soon.

A few of these swanky digs really stood out, and I'll profile them below in my personal list of best cruise suites.

In some cases, these are one-of-a-kind suites found on only a single vessel. In other cases, they are suites with similar sisters on multiple ships.

most expensive cruise ship suite

To be clear, this is by no means an exhaustive list. Disney fans will no doubt admonish me for not including the supersized suites on some Disney Cruise Line ships, such as the art deco-influenced Roy O. Disney Suite on Disney Fantasy. I've been in these suites, and they are certainly impressive. But I wasn't as wowed by them as I was by the suites below. And I have to cut off my list somewhere.

Related: 8 cabin locations on cruise ships you definitely should avoid

Luxury lines Silversea Cruises and Seabourn also offer quite a few wonderful suites on their ships, and it's worth noting that some of the biggest suites at sea are those found on Norwegian Cruise Line 's Jewel-class vessels.

Below, you'll find my picks for the seven best suites at sea.

Regent Suite

Ship: Seven Seas Splendor (Regent Seven Seas Cruises)

most expensive cruise ship suite

Every time I think of this suite, I think of that famous scene in "Dr. Zhivago" where Comrade Kaprugina dresses down the good doctor on the size of his mansion. "There was living space for 13 families in this one house!" she scolds.

You might not be able to jam 13 families into Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' Regent Suite, but in a pinch, you probably could come close. It sprawls over an astounding 4,443 square feet — nearly twice the size of the average American home. Its opulence is like nothing you'll find anywhere else at sea (except in similar suites found on Regent's Seven Seas Explorer and the just-unveiled Seven Seas Grandeur).

Located at the front of Seven Seas Splendor , the Regent Suite is so big it stretches all the way from one side of the ship to the other, offering views in three directions. It has two massive bedroom complexes — and they really are complexes, with seemingly endless space. It also has a living room, a separate dining area and perhaps the most spectacular balcony at sea.

Among the over-the-top things you'll find in the Regent Suite is a bed with a handmade mattress that Regent executives claim cost more than $200,000. It was handcrafted by four artisans at the renowned Hastens workshop in Koping, Sweden, using horsetail hair and flax, along with cotton and wool batting.

The Regent Suite also has a ridiculously large master bathroom, complete with its own sauna and steam room. It's big enough that it can double as a personal spa treatment room. To that end, the Regent Suite — get this — comes with its own spa therapist on call. Unlimited spa treatments are included in the cost of the suite.

Other perks of staying in the Regent Suite include first-class domestic flights to reach the ship; a personal car, driver and guide in every port; and a dedicated butler to help make arrangements on board.

The only downside to a stay? The cost. Regent charges $11,000 a day for the privilege.

Royal Loft Suite

Ship: Quantum of the Seas (Royal Caribbean)

most expensive cruise ship suite

At 1,640 square feet, the Royal Loft Suite on Royal Caribbean 's Quantum of the Seas isn't nearly as big as the Regent Suite on Seven Seas Splendor. But it makes my list of the best cruise ship suites because it offers something the latter doesn't: views across the ship's wake through a soaring, two-deck-high glass wall.

That's right, the Royal Loft Suite on Quantum of the Seas sprawls over two decks and has a main room that is two stories high — a lavish use of space that is rare in the cruise world.

Royal Caribbean offers a Royal Loft Suite on each of its Oasis Class and Quantum Class ships, but there are some design differences among them.

My favorite of all the Royal Loft Suites is the one on Quantum of the Seas, the first vessel in Royal Caribbean's Quantum Class series. Sleeping up to six, it offers a stylish, two-deck-high living and dining space facing the complex's giant window wall, complete with such modernist touches as an Eames chair (which, being a minimalist, I adore). Among its highlights are a dry bar and a sofa that converts into a double bed.

Related: 5 reasons to turn down a cruise ship cabin upgrade

The first floor of the Royal Loft Suite is also home to a media room with a sofa that converts into a queen bed. It's a perfect hideaway for the kids, should you be traveling with a family.

Upstairs, the main bedroom is open-walled, so you can see across the living area to the sea. It is accessed via a bridge-like walkway, which I love. It's like crossing a drawbridge into your own private castle at sea.

Rounding out the complex is a spacious, 415-square-foot private balcony that has its own private whirlpool — another great place from which to look out over the water.

Balmoral Suite

Ship: Queen Mary 2 (Cunard Line)

most expensive cruise ship suite

Royal Caribbean wasn't the first cruise line to go the double-decker route when designing over-the-top cruise ship suites. A decade before the debut of Quantum of the Seas, Cunard Line wowed cruise fans with the unveiling of this two-deck-high Grand Duplex suite and a sister suite, the Sandringham, on its iconic Queen Mary 2.

Named after a castle in Scotland owned by the British royal family, the Balmoral Suite is fit for a queen with a stunning 2,249 square feet of living space.

Like Royal Caribbean's Royal Loft suites, both the Balmoral Suite and the Sandringham Suite have a sprawling living room and dining area on their ground floors and a spacious master bedroom complex on their second levels.

One thing I particularly love about the Grand Duplex suites is that their master bedrooms are reached via dramatic, curving staircases.

Another allure of the Grand Duplex suites is that they come with access to Queen Mary 2's exclusive Queens Grill restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Only open to passengers staying in the very top accommodations on the ship, this is a much more intimate, elegant and private eatery than the main Britannia restaurant where most passengers dine.

Movie buffs may recognize the restaurant, as it was heavily highlighted in the Meryl Streep movie "Let Them All Talk," which was set on Queen Mary 2 .

Owner's suite

Ship: Viking Star (Viking)

most expensive cruise ship suite

Many cruise ships have giant suites that are given the name "owner's suite." But few live up to the phrase like this one.

The owner's suite on Viking Star — Viking 's first oceangoing ship — was specifically designed to be used by Viking founder and owner Torstein Hagen when he travels on the ship, and it's full of little quirks that reflect his personal tastes.

Among them: Hagen's personal mementos, including pictures of his family, are sprinkled throughout the suite. A selection of books from Hagen's personal collection fills a bookshelf.

The Norwegian-born Hagen also had the suite built with its own private sauna with a glass wall facing the sea, something he wanted for personal use.

In all, the suite — and similar suites that were built onto more recently unveiled Viking ocean ships — sprawls over an impressive 1,448 square feet.

most expensive cruise ship suite

Located at the top of the vessel, it has a bedroom with a large bathroom complex (including that sauna), a separate living room and a dining area that seats six people.

In addition, in another twist that speaks to its real use as an owner's suite, it has its own boardroom with a long table that seats 12 people that Hagen uses for meetings and catered dinner parties. There's an adjacent pantry that can be used by staff serving room service or catering hosted events.

Among other personal touches related to Hagen are wine and music collections that he curated for the rooms.

Similar Owner's Suites can be found on other Viking ocean ships, too, all used from time to time by Hagen and his family.

Reflection Suite

Ship: Celebrity Reflection (Celebrity Cruises)

most expensive cruise ship suite

Many Celebrity Cruises ships have spacious and alluring suites. But the newest of the line's five Solstice Class vessels, Celebrity Reflection, has my favorite of them all: the Reflection Suite.

Unveiled in 2012, the Reflection Suite was the brand's first two-bedroom suite, and it measures a none-too-shabby 1,636 square feet, not including a 194-square-foot balcony.

Located in a panoramic corner spot on the ship, it features a glass-walled living and dining area with a dining table that can seat 10 people (just in case you want to hold a dinner party during your cruise).

Related: TPG's ultimate guide to picking a cruise line

But what really earns it a place on our list of the best cruise ship suites is the Reflection Suite's stunning, glass-walled master bathroom. Dubbed a "sea-view bathroom," it is just that — a bathroom with floor-to-ceiling windows that offer incredible sea views. The most-talked-about highlight of the space: a glass-enclosed rain shower that juts out over the edge of the ship.

most expensive cruise ship suite

Just be careful if you use the shower as the ship pulls into port: You might end up putting on a show. (The walls are made of "smart glass," so you can change them from transparent to translucent.) That said, we can't think of another bathroom on a cruise ship with such amazing views.

Ship: Riviera (Oceania Cruises)

most expensive cruise ship suite

The owner's suites on Oceania Cruises ' Riviera — there are three of them — rival anything you can find at a resort on land when it comes to elegance and style.

So do three more owner's suites that you can find on Riviera's slightly older sister ship, Marina.

All six of the suites were decorated using Ralph Lauren furnishings by designer Susan Bednar Long, and they have a wonderful flow and consistency in style.

The mahogany beds that you'll find in the master bedrooms are upholstered in steel-blue mohair — a striking touch — and are flanked by walls covered in cashmere. A few steps away, a marble-clad master bathroom offers more luxurious Ralph Lauren design touches.

Measuring around 2,000 square feet, the owner's suites also have spacious living rooms and a dramatic entryway with a bar on one side and a grand piano on the other.

most expensive cruise ship suite

The suites offer lots of outdoor living space with wrap-around balconies that are home to hot tubs and flat-screen TVs. These balconies overlook the back of the ship, offering great views.

Among the extra touches, a stay in one of the suites comes with butler service, free laundry service of up to three bags per sailing, priority ship embarkation with priority luggage delivery and access to an exclusive executive lounge staffed by a dedicated concierge.

Ultimate Family Suite

Ship: Symphony of the Seas (Royal Caribbean)

most expensive cruise ship suite

Yes, I'm putting a second Royal Caribbean suite on my short list of the seven best cruise suites. The line is that amazing when it comes to suites. Indeed, if I had to pick just one cruise line for best suites, it'd be Royal Caribbean.

The Ultimate Family Suite on Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas, which debuted in 2018, really is the ultimate family suite. I can't think of a better suite anywhere in the world, at sea or on land, for families with kids, particularly small kids.

Like two other Ultimate Family suites that have debuted more recently on Spectrum of the Seas (a ship devoted to the Asia cruise market) and Wonder of the Seas, Symphony's is like a kiddie fun zone that happens to have beds where you can spend the night.

Related: 12 tips for surviving a luxury cruise with kids

Measuring a palatial 1,346 square feet, the Ultimate Family Suite on Symphony of the Seas spans two decks that are loaded with such kid-friendly attractions as an air hockey table, a building block wall, table tennis on the balcony and a vertical climbing maze.

There's also a crawl-through nook connecting the main bedroom for adults and a second kiddie bedroom, plus — surely the coolest feature of all — a slide that descends from the second floor of the complex to the first floor. (Don't worry, there are stairs, too, for those who want to move between floors the traditional way.)

most expensive cruise ship suite

In addition, the complex has its very own private cinema room with an 85-inch 4K TV that streams movies, a popcorn machine and the latest gaming consoles.

Designed with even the largest families in mind — it can hold up to eight people! — the suite also features one of the most jaw-dropping balcony views on the entire ship. And, like all high-end suites on Royal Caribbean ships, it comes with a Royal Genie — a personal butler assigned to cater to your every need.

‘The World' is a luxury ship that travels the world full time — here's how much an apartment on it costs

By monica pitrelli,cnbc • published august 20, 2024 • updated on august 20, 2024 at 11:35 pm.

A floating apartment. A residential yacht. A holiday home that travels the globe.

The World, a luxury liner, has many descriptions, but "cruise ship" is not one of them, said resident Jim Minarik.

📺 24/7 Chicago news stream: Watch NBC 5 free wherever you are

"The only thing that's similar between the world and a cruise ship is they float on the water," he said. "If our ship was a cruise ship, there'd probably be 1,500 passengers. When we're really busy, we have between 200 and 300."

The World has 167 privately owned apartments, ranging from 290-square-foot studios to 3,240-square-foot four-bedroom residences.

Minarik and his wife bought their apartment in 2020 with plans to spend one to two months a year on the ship. However, he said, they now spend up to half of the year on board.

Many residents bring their own furniture and employ interior designers to decorate their apartments.

"We just found we love so much about the community, the way of travel — it's very leisurely and comfortable," he said. "You're continuously seeing something new."

Minarik said the couple were so enamored by the onboard experience that they eventually bought a second, larger apartment on The World, keeping the first apartment for family and friends.

Life aboard the ship

Feeling out of the loop? We'll catch you up on the Chicago news you need to know. Sign up for the weekly Chicago Catch-Up newsletter .

Like many cruises, The World has multiple restaurants and bars, yoga classes and a gym, two pools, a medical center and round-the-clock room service.

But the similarities mainly end there. For starters, on this ship, the owners call many of the shots.

"It's a democratic society on board," said Residential Director Eddie Wong. "They vote on things like the itinerary, they vote for refurbishments on the ship," as well as its board of directors.

An outdoor pool sits quiet while The World was docked in Singapore in May 2024. On average, there's around 150 residents on the ship, although this number can double during expedition trips and year-end and school holidays, said Residential Director Eddie Wong.

Itineraries change yearly, Wong said. The schedule for 2026 has been finalized, he said, and includes stops in Antarctica, French Polynesia and Easter Island, the latter of which he called "one of the most sought-after locations in the world."

The World docks in around 100 ports per year, stopping for two to five days, rather than a few hours, said Wong.

"We'll pull into a port, like the Amalfi Coast," said Minarik. "We stay for three or four days, so we may not even get off on the first day … we might just go off for dinner."

The World creates photo books after its expedition trips, which in 2024 includes trips to Antarctica, Australia's Kimberley region, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, Wong said.

Several owners live on the ship full time, but most come and go as they please, he said.

After cruising from South America to South Africa, Minarik said, he and his wife disembarked in Cape Town and went on safari for two weeks, before heading home to Orange County, California. The friends they were traveling with caught back up with the ship, which by that time had moved up Africa's west coast, he said.

The residents of The World

Many owners are North American, said Wong. "But we have residents from around 20 different nationalities … we have a lot of Australians on board" too, he said.

Minarik, the former CEO of a large consumer electronics business, said owners have all had some level of financial success.

"That's just a fact, but what's really interesting is everybody has a great story," he said.

Purchase prices for residences range from $2.4 million to $15 million — a figure which doesn't include quarterly maintenance fees, which can be around 10% of the purchase price annually.

Maintenance fees come with $33,000 worth of food and beverage credits aboard the ship, but they also pay for crew, renovation and upkeep to the ship, which has a full-sized tennis court.

Yet money is not a big topic aboard The World, Minarik said.

"There's definitely no keeping-up-with-the-Joneses because whether you're a multi-millionaire, there's plenty of billionaires," he said. "So what you talk about is your love of travel and the experiences."

He said one of his friends from the ship is an 82-year-old guy who gives "more money than I could even imagine" to charity. What do they talk about? "Diving," said Minarik.

A Champagne bar set up on Antarctica's Penola Strait.

Potential buyers are vetted, Wong said. In addition to financial and criminal checks, he said, buyers need two letters of recommendation from an existing resident.

Every year, about 10% of residences go up for sale, a company representative told CNBC Travel .

The average length of ownership is seven to eight years, Wong said. By that time, owners have seen most of the world several times over, he said. Others leave to be closer to specialized medical care or to spend more time with family.

Minarik agreed that the biggest downside of ship life is time spent away from his children and grandchildren. He said he and his wife plan their lives to balance their love for family and exploration.

Another drawback? Minarik said he can't bring his dogs on board.

But "if I was to come up with anything other than you can't have your pets and your family, I'd be making stuff up," he said.

Only ship of its kind?

Wong said that while other companies have tried, The World is still the only ship of its kind.

Residents can cook in their apartments using groceries bought in ports or in a store on board that stocks produce and gourmet items.

The MV Narrative, an upscale residential ship being built by a company called Storylines , has been hit by several delayed departures. Originally planned to set sail in 2024, it's now scheduled to start cruising in 2027. The ship is larger than The World, with plans for 500 rooms to accommodate around 1,000 people.

Another residential ship, Life at Sea , was canceled in November 2023, the same month it was scheduled to first set sail. Some travelers had reportedly sold their businesses and homes before learning that the company behind the cruise, Miray Cruises, had canceled the three-year voyage after failing to secure a ship.

Fact-based journalism that sparks the Canadian conversation

In an illustration, a Canada goose flys behind a cruise ship which sails on a lake featuring partly darkened water

Lake Superior’s Cruise Ship Problem

As tourists turn to “underexplored” ports, mega boats are sailing through environmental loopholes, environment, lake superior’s cruise ship problem, by leah borts-kuperman, illustration by maggie prince.

R obert Stewart , a Lakehead University professor who researches water security in Thunder Bay, has kayaked Lake Superior for decades.

“I might see a moose on the shore. I might see all different types of birds land on the water around me. I might see a school of fish under me—all the things that aren’t only great to see but let you know that there’s a healthy ecosystem.” But he’s recently had to get used to something new: large luxury cruise ships approaching the typically pristine areas. “As soon as that boat [comes] in, it gets loud. You don’t notice it at first, but the hum is there, and every animal splits.”

The city of Thunder Bay is known as the “Gateway to Northwest Ontario” and the 150,000 lakes and rivers in the area. Visitors come to experience rolling mountains, majestic forests, and Lake Superior—North America’s largest freshwater lake and, by many measures, one of the healthiest. Cruise companies are picking up on the region’s natural offerings. One 2025 Viking cruise, marketed as the “Undiscovered Great Lakes” voyage, will take passengers from Thunder Bay to Milwaukee to “hike boreal forests, watch for wildlife and learn about Anishinaabe First Nations heritage.” An eight-day voyage on these floating hotels with swimming pools, buffets, theatres, and spas starts at about $9,000 per person.

  • Kill the Travel Bug: The Case for Staying Put
  • The Cruise Ship Cometh
  • The Lost Indigenous Youth of Thunder Bay

Cruise ships have been coming to Thunder Bay since 1996 but paused for some time amid infrastructure issues and changes in popular cruise ship itineraries. Following improvements to the city’s marina and cruise terminal, luxury cruiser fleet operators like Viking returned in 2022 after a decade-long absence. Now, while the global cruise industry battles growing concerns over its emissions, noise, and pollution, 2024 is set to see a record of seventeen cruise ships in the lake port from late spring into fall.

This pattern is expected to boom, creating tension between tourists who want to experience “unexplored” nature and the fact that the very act of arriving on cruise ships is poised to ruin the things drawing them to the region. Lax Canadian cruising regulations allow for luxury cruises to sail through giant loopholes in environmental protections.

“T he problem with cruise ships is the pollution, and they create a lot of pollution,” says Anna Barford, an environmental engineer. Barford is also the Canada shipping campaigner from Stand.earth, an organization of strategists, researchers, and experts demanding environmental reform from Canadian industries.

In her role, Barford has studied the effects of cruise ships in Vancouver, Canada’s main cruising port—the country’s been dubbed the “ toilet bowl ” for its high levels of sewage and grey water.

“Because cruise ships are very energy intensive, because it’s a luxury travel experience, there is a lot more pollution that comes with it,” Barford says.

Cities like Venice and Barcelona have banned or strictly limited cruise ships because of their effects on air, water, soil, and wildlife. A cruise ship with a capacity of 2,000 to 3,000 passengers can generate 1,000 tonnes of waste per day. While the cruises that can actually get into the Great Lakes are somewhat smaller, this means that the daily waste per passenger comes to at least 300 litres of grey water, forty of black water, ten of bilge water, three and a half kilos of garbage, and thirty grams of toxic waste.

Cruises in Nunavut have been reported to deplete narwhal numbers , threatening a key food source in a region with unsustainably expensive groceries. Thunder Bay is also well known for its traditional hunting and fishing territories.

In 2022, Transport Canada implemented interim measures for cruise ships to follow, including avoiding grey water and sewage discharge within three nautical miles of the shore and appropriately treating sewage, with filtration and chemical procedures or through biological composting, when possible. Its second interim order, a copy-paste of the first, expired in June this year. Now the agency has further renewed the interim order until 2025—which Stand.earth has called a “lazy” approach, especially given the increased number of cruise ships in new areas.

Barford says the biggest loopholes are the lack of independent monitoring to ensure cruise ships are actually following regulations, and the unregulated use of a technology called “scrubbers.” Scrubbers are devices on ships to treat exhaust gases. They take sulphur from fuel and put it into the water in the form of waste water, essentially turning air pollution into water pollution.

Transport Canada promised to look into these scrubbers and “other areas of concern” but has not addressed them in the most recent update. What’s especially concerning to Thunder Bay is that these interim orders don’t specifically mention the Great Lakes; they only reference marine environments—which could result in yet another loophole.

T hunder Bay Tourism is courting cruise ships to bring much-needed economic stimulus to the region. Tourism Manager Paul Pepe told local news in March that two cruise ships in the port in one day is a “nice problem to have.” He told The Walrus that the economic boost for the community was about $4.3 million last year, and that cruising “really helps amplify Thunder Bay as a destination to the global curious traveller.”

Pepe is a cruiser in his personal life. In his professional opinion, he has no concerns about the environmental impact of cruises and says that the city has not been monitoring any potential environmental impacts and has no plans to do so in the future. He says cruise lines are “environmentally considerate in terms of their operations. They’re aware that they’re going into sensitive areas, and they conduct themselves accordingly.”

Tourism development is one of Thunder Bay’s five strategic pillars for economic development, and this development is critical in a city where up to one in ten people live below the poverty line. To court future cruises, local news sites have reported, Superior Country, an organization promoting tourism in the region, will host a six-day “familiarization tour” for representatives of cruise lines next year.

“When the Viking smokestacks and the Viking logos on the side of their stack [are] in the harbour, people see that big logo lit up. They get excited by it. They say, ‘Wow, Viking is coming to Thunder Bay. They must love what we have here,’” Pepe says. “And the guests do: they love the fresh air, they love the clean water, they love the friendliness of small communities.”

In the meantime, leadership is reshaping the community to attract cruise tourists. The Thunder Bay Art Gallery is planning to move adjacent to the cruise terminal next year, and the city has already invested $5 million into revamping the waterfront area. These have been exciting, long-awaited signs of progress for some residents in a city which has the benefits of natural beauty and a vibrant culture but which suffers from significant poverty and public spaces in need of improvement and development.

Magazines like Travel Weekly have said these cruises are a sign that the Great Lakes are emerging as “that rarest of unicorns: a bona fide new destination for the cruise industry.” Put simply: there are not too many new places to go on cruises, and the five lakes make up a group of large freshwater bodies on Earth with “dozens of underexplored ports of call.” They are within driving distance, or a quick flight, from many US cities. But this location is especially concerning given Lake Superior is also the source of Thunder Bay’s water supply.

The arriving cruises make an ostensible effort to seem eco-friendly, some with on-board naturalists and locally sourced culinary ingredients. Viking’s Great Lakes cruises partner with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and are equipped with scientific technology meant to capture data about the lake. The company proclaimed in 2020: “We want to continue to be a role model in environmental thinking and new climate-smart technology.”

However, for locals and environmentalists alike, it is important to remain cautious about these promises given a lack of federal oversight and enforcement. Despite the promises of an economic boom, it would be a tragedy to forget it’s the healthy, flourishing lake that makes this region such a draw.

“One of the best things about Northwestern Ontario, and about Thunder Bay, is how close we are to nature, and how close we are to this really special place where we have clean water, where we have fresh air,” says Victoria Russell-Matthews, a Metis artist born and raised in Thunder Bay.

She questions whether the benefits of this tourism outweigh the risks to the land: “Cruise ships are very much a testament to human vanity,” Russell-Matthews says. “At the end of the day, we need to question: What are the things that we value most, long term?”
