Here’s why you should consider embarking on a train ride through the Canadian Rockies:

Immersive Scenery

One of the most compelling reasons to choose a Canadian Rockies train vacation is the immersive experience of the stunning landscapes. From the comfort of your seat, you can gaze through panoramic windows and witness the awe-inspiring beauty of the region. The journey also takes you through lush forests, each turn offering a new, captivating view.

Wildlife Spotting

The Canadian Rockies are home to a diverse range of wildlife, and a train ride trough the Rockies offers a front-row seat to observe these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. As the train passes through the wilderness, keep your eyes peeled for bears roaming the forests, elk grazing in open meadows, and moose making their way through the marshlands. Eagles can often be seen soaring overhead, adding to the sense of awe and connection with nature. The trains’ routes through remote areas increases your chances of spotting animals.

Relaxing and Nostalgic

#2 Travel tip: Winter train trip

VIA Rail trains operate year-round. So, if you’re looking to visit the Canadian Rockies in winter, you can travel to Jasper by sleeper train from Vancouver or Toronto.

Blog Author - Hannah Poaros-Mcdermott

Sleeper Train, VIA Rail

One option for your Canadian Rockies train travel is the Sleeper train. Sleeper Class is available on The Canadian between Vancouver and Toronto. You can go all the way from coast to coast or choose to stop in Jasper or Winnipeg. Jasper is where you would disembark for your Canadian Rockies adventure.

There are three service levels on The Canadian train: Economy, Sleeper Plus, and Prestige. Both Sleeper Plus and Prestige classes are recommended if you are spending a long time on the train. Sleeper Plus includes a private berth or a cabin with bunk beds. Hot meals are served in the dining car of the train, and these are included throughout your journey. Prestige Class is a luxury service that includes priority meal reservations, afternoon tapas, snacks, drinks, meals, and more. Prestige Class cabins are larger than Sleeper Plus cabins and feature a lower bed for two. Prestige guests also have a dedicated concierge. Both Sleeper Plus and Prestige guests have access to the train’s viewing cars.

If you want to extend your stay in Canada, you can also sleep on board The Ocean train. This VIA Rail train travels between the provinces of Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

Both sleeper train routes are available all year long.

Alaska Cruise - suggested add-on

Canadian Rockies train tours from Vancouver can combine with an Alaska Cruise. The rail part of your trip can come before or after your Alaska cruise. There are two types of cruise ships. Choose a larger, more luxurious vessel or a smaller ship that allows you to visit more coves and inlets. Each type of ship has its advantages, so it depends on your style of travel and what you want to get out of your Alaska cruise adventure.

Choosing the Right Train Experience for You

Selecting your perfect train trip in the Canadian Rockies depends on various factors including your desired level of luxury, the specific route you wish to travel, and the time of year you plan to go.

Luxury vs. Classic

When it comes to choosing a luxury versus classic train experience, you need to consider your desired level of comfort, the type of service, and the amenities you’d like, as well as factoring in your budget.

Luxury Options

If you prefer a high-end experience with premium amenities, consider the GoldLeaf service on the Rocky Mountaineer.

  • GoldLeaf Service: This top-tier option features bi-level coaches with full glass-dome windows on the upper level for panoramic views, gourmet meals prepared by executive chefs served in a dining car, and an exclusive outdoor viewing platform. The service is impeccable, with attentive staff ensuring every detail of your journey is perfect. For an ultimate luxury experience on a sleeper train, upgrade to VIA Rail’s Prestige Class, which offers unparalleled comfort and exclusivity on longer overnight journeys.
  • Prestige Class: On VIA Rail's sleeper trains, Prestige Class provides private modern cabins with en-suite bathrooms, dedicated concierge service, and priority access to dining and lounge cars. It's an ideal choice for those seeking a blend of luxury and extended travel across Canada.

Classic Options

For travelers who prefer a more traditional experience or have a tighter budget, the other service tier options on these trains offer a charming and comfortable way to see the Rockies. You can still enjoy stunning views, cozy accommodations, and friendly service, making it a memorable journey without the premium price tag.

  • SilverLeaf Service: While more affordable than GoldLeaf, Rocky Mountaineer’s SilverLeaf still offers an elevated experience with single-level dome coaches that provide excellent views, locally inspired cuisine served at your seat, and a high standard of service.
  • Sleeper Plus: with VIA Rail’s Sleeper Plus, you still enjoy a private cabin and access to the lounge and dining cars. While some options have a private toilet, there are shared showers.

Route Considerations

Your choice of route will shape your overall experience, depending on whether you want an immersive Rockies adventure or a broader cross-country exploration.

  • Rockies-Focused Routes : If your primary interest is in experiencing the Canadian Rockies, consider Rocky Mountaineer's daylight sight-seeing trains. These routes are specifically designed to highlight the most scenic and iconic parts of the Rockies, offering a concentrated and intensive experience of the region’s natural beauty.
  • Cross-Country Journeys : For those looking to extend their adventure beyond the Rockies, VIA Rail’s "The Canadian" offers an epic journey from Vancouver to Toronto. This route provides a comprehensive cross-country experience, including the train across the Canadian Rockies, as well as the diverse landscapes of Canada, from prairies to forests to urban centres. It's a great option if you have more time and want to see more of what Canada has to offer.

Time of Year

The time of year you choose for your train trip in the Canadian Rockies can significantly influence your experience, as the scenery and available activities change with the seasons.

  • Spring (April to June) : Spring brings a burst of colour to the Rockies with blooming wildflowers and rushing waterfalls fed by melting snow. Wildlife is also very active during this time, making it a great season for animal sightings.
  • Summer (July to September) : Summer offers the most comfortable weather and the longest days, perfect for outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, and sightseeing. The lakes are at their most vibrant turquoise, and the mountains are lush and green.
  • Fall (October to November) : Fall is a spectacular time to visit for the autumn foliage, with its rich reds, oranges, and yellows. The cooler temperatures and fewer tourists also make for a more tranquil experience.
  • Winter (December to March) : Winter transforms the Rockies into a snowy playground. While Rocky Mountaineer does not operate in winter, VIA Rail’s Canadian is affectionately known as the Snow Train, and offers a stunning train ride in the Canadian Rockies, especially as it travels between Vancouver and Edmonton. Tours at this time offer unique activities like skiing, snowshoeing, and ice skating. The snow-covered peaks and frozen lakes provide a serene and magical backdrop.

Practical Tips for Planning Your Train Trip

Planning a Canadian Rockies train trip requires thorough preparation to ensure you make the most of this extraordinary experience. From booking your tour to packing your bags, here are some essential tips to help you get ready for your adventure.

Booking in Advance

One of the most crucial steps in planning your Canadian Rockies train trip is booking your tickets well in advance. Popular routes and services, especially those during peak seasons, tend to sell out quickly.

  • Peak Seasons: Summer (June to September) and the holiday season (December) are the busiest times. To secure your preferred dates and service level, it’s advisable to book several months ahead.
  • Special Offers: Keep an eye out for early bird specials or promotional discounts that can save you money.

Booking early not only guarantees your spot but also gives you more flexibility in choosing the best travel dates and accommodations.

Combine with Other Destinations

Maximize your trip by combining your train journey with stays in nearby cities and attractions.

  • Vancouver: Start or end your trip in Vancouver, a vibrant city known for its scenic waterfront, diverse culinary scene, and cultural attractions like Stanley Park and Granville Island.
  • Calgary: If your route includes Calgary, take some time to explore this dynamic city, famous for its western heritage and the Calgary Stampede.
  • Banff: Extend your time in Banff during your train vacation to experience everything this mountain town has to offer. Nestled in the heart of the Rockies, Banff offers stunning natural beauty, hot springs, and outdoor activities.

Activities and Excursions

Enhance your train trip with various activities and excursions available in the Canadian Rockies.

  • Hiking: The Rockies are a hiker’s paradise with trails ranging from easy walks to challenging climbs. Popular hikes include Johnston Canyon and the Plain of Six Glaciers.
  • Wildlife Tours: Join guided tours to see the region’s wildlife up close. Expert guides can take you to the best spots for viewing bears, elk, moose, and more.
  • City Sightseeing: In cities like Vancouver and Calgary, take advantage of sightseeing tours to explore local landmarks, museums, and cultural sites.

What to Pack

When packing for a train trip through the Canadian Rockies, consider both comfort on the train and the area’s varying weather conditions.

  • Clothing: Layered clothing is essential due to the fluctuating temperatures. Include a waterproof jacket, warm sweaters, and comfortable pants.
  • Footwear: Bring sturdy, comfortable walking shoes for excursions and casual footwear for onboard.
  • Essentials: Don’t forget your camera for capturing stunning landscapes, binoculars for wildlife spotting, and a good book or travel journal.
  • Health and Comfort: Pack any necessary medications, travel-sized toiletries, and personal comfort items like a neck pillow or blanket.

Tailoring your packing list to the unique demands of train travel and the outdoor adventures in the Rockies ensures you’re well-prepared for a comfortable and enjoyable journey. By following these practical tips, you can effectively plan and prepare for a Canadian Rockies train trip and make the most of your spectacular rail journey through one of the world's most beautiful regions.

The Most Beautiful Winter Train Rides in North America

Experience winter landscapes in a brand new way.

winter train trip through canadian rockies

When traveling long distances across North America, the scenic route is always worth taking, especially in the winter when those wild and majestic landscapes get covered in a fresh blanket of snow. And while wintry conditions rarely favor drivers, train riders get to enjoy the frosty scenery without any of the stress of icy roads.

A winter train ride in North America can sometimes feel like riding in a snow globe, as you get to watch lakes, mountains, rivers, and forests rush by while sitting warm and cozy in your railcar. Whether you choose an Amtrak route from the Midwest to the Grand Canyon , a ski train between downtown Denver and the slopes, or a California wine train that embraces the holiday spirit, trains and winter fun go together like hot chocolate and marshmallows. Here are some of the best winter train rides in North America, where you can truly appreciate the diverse natural beauty of the continent.

Aurora Winter Train: Anchorage to Fairbanks, Alaska

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Alaska Railroad can get you from Anchorage to Fairbanks in about 12 hours — providing spectacular views of the Alaskan wilderness along the way. From pristine lakes and snow-capped mountains to wildlife like moose, caribou, and bears, the route immerses you in the natural beauty of the country's largest state. This includes an up close and personal view of Denali, the highest peak in North America.

Between December and January, you can only make this trip on Saturdays, but starting in mid-February until April there are two to three departures a week from Anchorage.

Empire Builder: Chicago to Portland, Oregon

This 46-hour Amtrak route runs every day of the year, allowing wintertime riders to see the splendor of the American West under a blanket of snow. Starting in Chicago and finishing in Seattle, via Minneapolis/St. Paul, Spokane, and Portland, the Empire Builder route passes through the majesty of Glacier National Park dressed in its winter best. Other highlights include views of Seattle's Columbia River Gorge and the snowcapped peaks of Washington's Beacon Rock and Oregon's Mount Hood.

Cascade Canyon Winter Train: Durango, Colorado

Cascade Canyon in San Juan National Forest is a popular hiking trail in the summer, but in the winter, you can also enjoy the natural beauty of the area without having to get off the train. Starting in Durango, the Cascade Canyon Winter Train takes you 26 miles around the edge of the gorge during the 5.25-hour round trip. The canyon itself was once mined for silver and gold and although the resource dried up years ago, there are still plenty of precious photo ops to be had when there's snow on the ground. The train runs on select dates from November to May.

Seattle and Canadian Rockies Winter Discovery: Seattle to Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada

Amtrak's Seattle and the Canadian Rockies Discovery trip begins in Washington and takes you over the border on a nine-day Canadian adventure. With stops in Vancouver, Jasper, Banff, and Calgary, you’re sure to see all the best views the Canadian Rockies have to offer. The itinerary also includes a ski gondola ride to the top of Sulphur Mountain for epic vistas of the snow-covered peaks, and a winter wildlife tour in Jasper National Park.

Colorado Ski Train: Denver to Winter Park, Colorado

The Winter Park Express is an Amtrak train that delivers you from Denver Union Station to the doorstep of the Winter Park Resort. The ski train only runs from Friday to Sunday between January and March, so it's up to you if you want to stay for just the weekend or a whole week. Tickets go on sale in December and tend to sell out fast, so get them early if you can. If you're flying into Denver, you can take public transportation to Union Station and hop on right from there — no cab or rental car necessary. Try to snag a seat in the sightseer lounge so you can enjoy the best views as the train climbs up into the mountains and passes through impressively constructed tunnels to get you to your destination.

Napa Valley Wine Train: Napa, California

The Napa Valley Wine Train is one of the most glamorous ways to explore this famous California wine region. At any time of year, you can sip wine while watching the vineyards roll by outside the window. During the holidays however, you can buy a ticket for the Santa Train and instead of wine, enjoy a tasting of hot cocoa and freshly baked cookies, plus a visit from the red-suited man of the season. Or, upgrade your journey to include a three-course gourmet meal (with kid-friendly menus) in one of the luxury cars. The holiday-themed trips run between late November and December 23.

Winter Escape to the Grand Canyon: Chicago to Williams, Arizona

Vacation by Rail's Winter Escape to the Grand Canyon is a six-day round-trip journey that delivers you from the white-out winter scenery of the Great Lakes region and into the colorful Southwest. Leaving from Chicago , you’ll see plenty of snow-covered views before arriving in Flagstaff, where you can make the rest of the way to the Grand Canyon by transferring to the Grand Canyon Railway — a shuttle will connect you from Flagstaff to Williams, Arizona. After spending time exploring the natural wonder at your own pace, you can return to the Windy City the same way you came.

Coast Starlight Train: Seattle to Los Angeles

For a truly magical winter experience, don’t dismiss the beauty of the West Coast in winter. Get your ticket for the Coast Starlight , a 36-hour Amtrak route that runs year-round from Seattle to Los Angeles, making stops in Portland, Klamath Falls, San Luis Obispo, and Sacramento. The trip starts strong with dramatic Pacific Northwest scenery including forests, lakes, rivers, and the snow-capped Cascade mountains. Then, watch the snow melt away as you travel south through California to Los Angeles.

California Zephyr: Chicago to San Francisco

If you want to truly see the extent of America’s gorgeous and diverse scenery in wintertime, you can’t do better than Amtrak's California Zephyr . This roughly two-day winter train excursion takes you from Chicago to San Francisco, passing through the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains, ensuring fantastic views all the way through. You can hop aboard any day of the year, but the Midwest's first snowfall typically happens in late November.

Adirondack Train: New York City to Montreal

Departing daily from New York City to Montreal, Amtrak's Adirondack train travels through New York State's expansive mountain range. Snow lovers can marvel at the icy peaks and white-dusted trees that cover the landscape. The trip takes about 10 hours, so it can be done in a day, or get off in Albany and check out the strikingly eclectic 1880s New York State Capitol building. You can also head to a nearby ski resort like Maple Ski Ridge , which is about a 30-minute drive from the city.

Ethan Allen Express Train: New York City to Burlington, Vermont

Alex Boudreaux/Getty Images

Vermont may be famous for its fall foliage, but come back in the winter and you're in for another beautiful spectacle. Amtrak's Ethan Allen Express goes from New York City to Burlington, Vermont, passing scenic winter views of the Hudson Valley and the Green Mountains. The trip takes about eight hours to complete, but you can break it up with stops to explore charming towns along the way, or maybe even find a cozy bed-and-breakfast with a wood-burning fireplace to spend the night on this leisurely journey north.

Winter in the Rockies: Vancouver to Banff, Alberta, Canada

Winter in the Rockies will take you from Vancouver to the real-life winter wonderland that is Banff, Alberta, cutting through both Jasper National Park and the iconic Lake Louise. Along the way, you'll have a front row seat to Canada's Rocky Mountain views and an opportunity to get out and explore the wintry landscapes. With this vacation package, you can disembark to ice skate on Lac Beauvert or take a horse-drawn sleigh ride across the frozen landscape. Once you arrive in Banff , hit the ski slopes or go for a well-deserved soak in the natural hot springs.

Luxury Winter Train Trip to the Canadian Rockies

We are back again from a wonderful trip in the Rockies. Everything was great! The Fairmont hotels we loved it. We had wonderful rooms in each hotel, the bus transfers very good arranged. We enjoyed our trips - snowshoeing, ice canyon walk, sleigh-ride, is was all fantastic! I was happily surprised with the informative travel documents with the lonely planet guide that we received on arrival in the Banff Springs hotel. So we want to thank you and your colleagues very much for arranging this wonderful trip for us! When we go back in future to Canada we will contact you again. Will recommend your company!

Jacqueline Netherlands

We had the most fabulous trip to our Winter Wonderland in the Canadian Rockies. Thank you so much for organizing all our travels and hotels.Highlights: the vintage train from Vancouver to Jasper! Via Rail Canadian needs better pictures to tout the awesome rail with it's adorable public rooms, dinning car, glass roof cars and cozy cabins. I left the shade up all night and watched the world go by.

Mary California, United States

We chose Canada by Design in favor of a travel company in our own country, as we thought that the local experience would give us a better holiday. How right we were! We also saved ourselves a lot of money, as Jennifer's quote was much less expensive than the quote we received in Australia. We liaised with Jennifer by email many months before our trip, to organize our once-in-a-lifetime Christmas Snow Train adventure from Vancouver through Jasper, Lake Louise, Banff and, finally, Calgary. Jennifer and her colleagues provided us with an excellent standard of service, always prompt, friendly and efficient. All accommodation was of a high quality, with The Fairmont Castle at Banff being outstanding. We felt like we were living in a fairy-tale with the amazing scenery that we encountered all along the way. When we first arrived in Vancouver, we headed directly to the Canada by Design office because we wanted to meet Jennifer in person. We were given a tour of the office and greeted by the whole team. Jennifer continued to work for us during this meeting, by offering suggestions for our time in Vancouver before our train departed. We would highly recommend Jennifer and Canada by Design for all of your travel needs. We count ourselves very lucky that we found this 5-star team of travel experts!

Julie Cass Brisbane, Australia

We are leaving Calgary today to return to Vancouver after our week trip that you organized for us. Just want to thank you for a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The train and the places we stayed were great. Everything was so easy with transport and accommodation. We will be recommending you to others and will use you again when we return for more adventure.

This canadian train adventure is the ultimate way to enjoy the fall colors.

A man and woman looking out of a train window while travelling through Western Canada showcasing vibrant fall colors.

From Colorado to coastal Maine, America has a lot on offer in leaf-peeping season. But here’s a secret: Our northern neighbor is kaleidoscopic in autumn.

The undulating alpine scenery coated in burgundy, buttery yellow and tangerine hues is particularly on show aboard the Rocky Mountaineer’s First Passage to the West . On route through Banff, Alberta, you’ll experience Western Canada through oversized train windows with a glass of local wine or a hearty breakfast — lemon and honey buttermilk pancakes or smoked salmon avocado toast — prepared by on-board chefs.

It’s a journey designed to get the good times rolling and banish that nagging question: “Are we there yet?”

National perk

A train on the tracks with trees and mountains in the background, part of Canada's Rocky Mountaineer's First Passage to the West route

Banff is best known for its imposing mountains and bluer-than-blue lakes (the Caribbean Sea-colored Lake Louise, in particular).

For peak foliage, the best time to visit the national park is the last two weeks of September and the first week of October. Leaf-peepers can look forward to the alpine (tamarack larch) trees doing their thing as they undergo a metamorphosis from lush green to burnished gold.

This needle-laden tree, which abounds in Banff National Park, can also be appreciated through a bird’s-eye perspective on the Banff Gondola, one of the add-on activities offered by the Rocky Mountaineer.

A cable car from the Rocky Mountaineer Train adventure in Canada, with trees and mountains in the background

Picture rail

Intrigued by the glamour of train travel but could do without sleeper car squishing? You’re in luck.

The Rocky Mountaineer is a daylight-only rail experience, so you’ll be on the tracks by day, and resting at beautiful hotels every night. To keep the choo-choo chummy all around, entertaining onboard hosts help narrate your time on the tracks with intel about wildlife and the geography, and campfire-worthy tales about historic sites and notable people.

When booking, select either GoldLeaf or SilverLeaf service options. With the GoldLeaf tier, you’ll be spoiled with cinematic vistas from a bi-level, glass-dome coach, the lower of which is for dining — you’ll also have access to an exclusive outdoor viewing platform. SilverLeaf service, meanwhile, takes place on a single-level train car, and you’ll dine on gourmet nosh from your seat.

Rates vary by service level and package (i.e., short journey, Rockies highlights or circle journey).

Right on track

Group of people enjoying the fall foliage from the glass-domed coaches of the Rocky Mountaineer Train in Canada

Vancouver, Kamloops and Banff are the trio of destinations highlighted on the legendary “First Passage to the West” — and quite the trio it is. Get what the Hollywood North hype is all about at glam restaurants and retail outposts juxtaposed with equally bejeweled mother nature (snow-capped mountains, coastal tides, you know the deal).

From Vancouver, you’ll chug along to Kamloops, with verdant landscapes, the peaks of the Coast Mountains, the Fraser River and the foamy white-water of Hell’s Gate dazzling you en route and in town.

Next, you’ll make your way east through the Shuswap region, with its endless lake vistas. Once your caboose gains elevation, you’ll be mountain spotting all the way to Banff.

A group of people sitting at a table eating food on the Rocky Mountaineer Train in Canada

For railroad buffs, the real scene-stealer may very well be the engineering feats of the Spiral Tunnels, unveiled in 1909, which pass through Mount Ogden (lower tunnel) and Cathedral Mountain (upper tunnel), up the steep incline to Kicking Horse Pass.

Geology geeks will rejoice the most in traversing the Continental Divide. And just about everyone will go gaga for retracing the route of 19th-century explorers connecting Canada’s East and West when the railroad was completed in 1885.

This year, rates for the “First Passage to the West” packages start at $1,720 for a two-day rail journey from Vancouver to Banff, inclusive of two breakfasts and two lunches onboard, luggage handling and rail station transfers in Kamloops and overnight hotel in Kamloops.

The “First Passage to the West” discovery package starts at $4,140 and includes the two days of Rocky Mountaineer rail service and meals, along with eight nights of hotel accommodations, luggage handling and multiple rail station transfers, a National Parks pass and Banff gondola rides.

But best of all, First Passage to the West packages go in both directions. That means you can start in the Rockies (Banff) and go to Vancouver, or vice versa.
