The best sim card in Nepal is the Ncell Home & Away prepaid sim card. Fortunately, both sim card providers offer extremely cheap mobile data for travellers visiting Nepal.

Ncell’s package is a bit cheaper than Nepal Telecom and their coverage is better. This makes recommending Ncell an easy choice. That said, if you are heading into the mountains then you shouldn’t expect very good coverage with either mobile operator.

If you prefer the convenience of an eSim and don’t require much data, Airalo’s Nepal eSim is an option as well. It uses the Ncell network. Bear in mind that it costs a lot more per GB than a local sim card.

A Tourist Sim Card in Nepal costs 599 NPR in September 2024, however, the exact price will often depend on the store you visit and the plan you choose.

Alternatively, an eSim in Nepal will cost $9.50 USD. This, again, depends on how much data you require and which eSim provider you choose.

How to Get a Sim Card in Nepal

Identify mobile providers: Ncell, Nepal Telecom and are your best options in Nepal.

Find your nearest store: Locate a store or retailer by searching on Google Maps for your nearest store or asking at your hotel reception. I’ve never had issues finding a store as they can usually be found in major cities, shopping centers, or tourist areas. If possible, I always recommend to to avoid airports and head in to an official store in the city.

Bring the necessary documents: It is always a good idea to carry your passport or identification documents for sim card registration purposes. We’ve found most providers will need to confirm your identity to provide a sim card and it can be a major hassle to head to a store only to have to come back again later with your passport.

Choose your plan: Either request the plan you are after or consult with the staff in the store to select the right plan for you. My recommendations at the beginning of this guide are a good starting point, but the staff will usually be able to suggest the best option.

Pay and activate your card: Pay for the SIM card and plan, and the staff will activate it for you.

Test: It’s always a good idea to check that you can access the internet before you leave the store. I always search for something on Google then refresh my Instagram feed to check it’s working fine.

Where to Get a Sim Card in Nepal

At the airport.

Buying a prepaid sim card for Nepal at the airport is usually considered the most convenient option for travellers arriving by plane.

However, airport stores selling sim cards are almost guaranteed to charge inflated prices, so if you are a cost-conscious traveller then you should definitely buy your sim card from a store in the city center.

In addition to this, we would argue that buying physical sim cards at all aren’t particularly convenient now that most people use esim compatible phones. If you are looking for the most convenient option, then buying an esim before you arrive or with the airport wifi is much easier and will save you having to queue up or communicate with staff.

If you must purchase a sim card at the airport in Nepal then you will be in luck. All major international airports in Nepal have stores selling sim cards. Despite the prices being higher than normal, the staff are knowledgable and will be able to get you set up with the correct sim card relatively quickly.

If you want to avoid the inflated sim card prices you’ll find at the airport and your phone isn’t esim compatible, then you’re going to need to head in to a store to buy your sim card.

I recommend visiting one of the official retail stores of the mobile internet operators such as Ncell, Nepal Telecom and . Your best option is to enter their names into Google Maps and find the branch closest to your hotel or accommodation. Typically the staff in the official stores in Nepal are knowledgable and helpful which means you can ensure you’ll walk away with a functioning sim card.

Despite this, it’s always a good idea to check your internet is working before you leave the store by loading a Google search results page and your preferred social media app. You should also ensure you always bring your passport with you when purchasing a sim card in case they need to register it.

If you like to be prepared and would prefer to arrive in Nepal with your sim card all sorted and your phone ready to connect to the internet immediately then you should look into purchasing a sim card online.

Before you read this guide, you may wonder if you actually need a SIM card in Nepal. If you don’t mind not having Internet, you’ll likely find free Wifi in restaurants, shopping malls, and hotels.

That said, if you need data to get around, call a cab, or translate Nepali – you may want to get a SIM card for your travels in Nepal.

Best SIM Cards In Nepal

If you’re traveling in Nepal, we recommend using a SIM card from Nepal Telecom, Ncell, or Airalo. (I’ll get back to Airalo later on, so keep reading to learn more!)

That said, if you’re planning on visiting other countries during your trip to Asia, you might want to make sure to pick an option that offers coverage in other Asian countries.

How To Buy A SIM Card In Nepal

You can either buy a Nepal prepaid SIM card in person in some international airports, mobile provider stores, convenience stores, or online.

Usually, you can expect higher costs and low data offers at the airport, so we don’t recommend buying a SIM card at the airport.

That said, you won’t necessarily find SIM card shops in every airport, so it’s essential to keep this in mind. And, when you see a shop, you might also have limited options.

For this reason, I’d recommend buying a SIM card directly from the mobile provider store. Note that you may need your passport to buy one.

Although, this means you won’t get data right upon your arrival. So, if you prefer to be connected at all times, you could use an eSIM or purchase an Asia prepaid SIM card online.

Now, let’s take a look at the data plans offered by Nepal Telecom, and Ncell.

Nepal Telecom SIM Cards

Nepal Telecom offers two different types of data plans:

• 35 GB, valid for 60 days for Rs 1,600 ($12.22)
• 70 GB, valid for 120 days for Rs 3,000 ($22.92)

Ncell SIM Cards

Ncell has four relevant prepaid plans available:

• 3 GB, valid for 7 days for Rs 98 ($0.75)
• 7 GB, valid for 28 days for Rs 249 ($1.90)
• 12 GB, valid for 28 days for Rs 399 ($3.04)
• 20 GB, valid for 28 days for Rs 499 ($3.80)

Overall, we think Ncell is the best option if you plan to buy your SIM card in person. That said, any would do if you can’t find their store!

If you wish to have your SIM card ready for your arrival, you could purchase it online or on websites like Amazon.

You’ll find different plans on Amazon. For example, the PanAsia SIM card works in 15 countries and gives you 4 GB of data for 8 days. Nepal is included.

Since communication is one of the integral parts of life, you need a network on your phone even when you are in a foreign land. It is difficult for a traveler to stay in contact while relying on an international roaming service because the roaming charges are expensive.

The minute you arrive in Nepal, you would probably want to pull out your phone and either make a call to your home or drop a post on your social media account.

Doing so using your national telecom provider’s SIM can go heavy on your pocket and some of them may not even have roaming service.

Nepal has the top three mobile service providers currently. They are NTC, Ncell, and Smartcell. All of them are huge mobile service providers in Nepal with thousands of subscribers.

1. Nepal Telecom SIM (NTC SIM)

Nepal Telecom (NT) , a state-owned telecommunication company in Nepal, provides NTC SIM. NTC SIM came into effect 17 years ago, and since then, the services it provides have transformed a lot with time.

NTC has 4G coverage around various corners of Nepal. NT is even preparing to introduce a 5G network in Nepal. The 5G service project of Nepal Telecom is expected to produce some fruitful results soon.

The voice call quality of NTC is quite commendable as it works fine at high altitudes too. The same goes for the 4G network service. NT provides various 4G data packages at incredible prices.

Nepal Telecom Prepaid SIM Card for Tourists

NTC prepaid SIM cards for tourists are cost-effective and have several benefits. To purchase NTC SIM, visit the NTC counter at TIA and fill out the registration form.

2. Ncell SIM

Ncell Axiata Limited , the first private telecommunication company in Nepal provides Ncell SIM. Besides its transition to a public company from private, a lot has transformed over the 17 years of its establishment.

Ncell has introduced a special SIM for travelers. It is exclusively for foreigners who have arrived in Nepal to spend an incredible time with majestic mountains, unmatched landscapes, and indigenous culture.

Ncell has named this special SIM as Visit Nepal SIM. It is a SIM for travelers to experience high-quality and uninterrupted connections while in Nepal.

A regular Ncell SIM costs only Rs. 100 (inclusive of taxes). On the purchase of Ncell SIM, you get the main balance of Rs. 30 in it and 1GB of data valid for 3 days.

To buy the Visit Nepal SIM, you have to follow a few steps. Submit a photocopy of your passport, one passport-size photo, and your arrival visa with a filled-out registration form.

3. Smartcell SIM

Smartcell, the third-largest telecommunication company in Nepal, provides Smartcell SIM. The company was founded in 2008 and had been providing great mobile service since then.

Smartcell SIM, unfortunately, does not have large coverage in Nepal like NTC. It has extended service to around 45 districts, but its mobile internet service is remarkably fast.

Among the 45 districts, Smartcell offers 4G network services in 19 districts and 2G network services in 26 districts. Also, Smartcell does not offer a 3G service.

The 19 districts include major cities like Kathmandu , Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Nawalparasi, Chitwan, Siraha, Kaski, Dang,  Kavre, Kailali, Banke, Bardiya, Parsa, Kanchanpur, Saptari, Jhapa, Morang, Dhanusa, and Sunsari.

If you are visiting these places, you can definitely go for the Smartcell SIM as it is affordable and has good connectivity.

A regular Smartcell SIM costs only Rs. 99. On the purchase of a Smartcell SIM, you get a main balance of Rs. 90 balance with a Data volume of 200 MB, a 10-minute voice call, and an SMS pack valid for a month.

Buying SIM card in Nepal

Most of you may be wondering how to buy a sim card in Nepal. Well, it is a valid curiosity since you are unfamiliar with the places and outlets that sell SIM cards in Nepal.

Like in most countries, buying a sim card is easier for foreigners due to its availability at the airport . The airport may seem crowded, and you may think it will be difficult to find the purchase outlet, but it is quite visible from the arrival gate.

There are several outlets at Tribhuvan International Airport where you can purchase Nepali SIM Cards as soon as you arrive.

To purchase a SIM card in Nepal, you have to fulfill some requirements. You have to fill out a registration form and submit some documents.

You need to provide a photocopy of your passport, which you can get from the same outlet. Then, you need to show your arrival Visa.

Similarly, you need to provide one passport-size photo. Don’t worry if you don’t have one. The outlet has arrangements to provide urgent photos on the spot. Indian citizens can provide either a voter card or an Embassy card instead of a passport.

Nepal is such an easy country for tourists to enjoy.

I can’t help but brag about how amazing my adventures in Nepal were. Just go pop over to Instagram and you’ll see just a snippet of the amazing things that I did. Being such an easy country to travel and work in I’ve already decided to return in March 2020. From great coffee to superbly helpful people it was a pleasure to travel within. Now that’s not saying that Nepal doesn’t have it’s own issues – economic, the treatment of women, an out dated caste system are just to name a few. Then there’s the Tibet issue as well. 

Despite these issues the people are relatively happy and easy going. Just don’t call anyone a mother fucker* aka Sherpa issues will arise.

*In case you didn’t know, there was a documentary released in 2015 called Sherpa. Which documents some of the issues at the Mt Everest Base Camp. The biggest takeaway from that film is that if you call someone a mother f****r in Nepal it’s pretty much the worse thing you can say. And it won’t end nicely for you.

Nepal is always a country on my mind. Thanks for this heads up before us buying a ticket – we all need WIFI – reading and connecting it is. Nepal has been a touristic place ever since I just hope that it will attract more TECH investors so the connection would not be an issue most of the time. Im thinking right now if I should bring 2 phones in 2020? Hahha. Anyway, good post, very detailed and informative!

I would love to completely disconnect when I travel and focus on taking in everything without life distractions but that isn’t reality. Having said that, pretty sure I would be impatient with the connection issues! At least getting a sim card is a breeze, great information

Very helpful guide. I’m definitely one of the people who would need phone access as well. I was surprised to read that most locals carry two cell phones. It’s crazy to think how fast technology has spread and advanced I bet before too long they will have better and faster service.

I use a phone app to call the USA and they recycle numbers as well. It’s pretty funny getting random calls sometimes from peope who didn’t get the memo. Interesting tidbit at the end of the post. I think every country has their “don’t even say it” phrase that can get you into trouble

It seems to me the cell phone system is still in Stone Age in Nepal, lol! Having different companies battle over the reception territory is kind of ridiculous. Not fun having the phone numbers recycled either. At any rate, for an emergency it’s probably good to have a cell phone on you while traveling in Nepal. From all I understand our American phones would not work there at all.

You won’t have any issue having your American phones work in Nepal. A lot of developing countries have different companies owning different towers. About 10 years ago in Australia this was an issue for users. You could go through some areas and have no coverage because a different company owned the towers 😐

I need to be connected for work, as well as I like having data for apps like Google Maps

It’s interesting to know that most people carry around 2 mobile phones in Nepal because of the connectivity in certain areas being better in one than the other and also because of the offers available on Wifi and calling! That cannot be convenient. However, good to know that Nepal has good wifi connectivity now, due to tourism. I can understand as a freelancer you need to constantly stay connected however when I travel, I prefer to disconnect completely. I only get Wifi connection when I need GPS connectivity, usually when I am driving around in a city. It does seem quite cheap in Nepal though, the data packages, as compared to other parts of the world.

We travel with an international SIM in my phone and an international hot spot. Usually it is as simple as just turning them on. So I often don’t look at how to get a local SIM – just in case. Interesting to know that in Nepal phone numbers are recycled after 6 months. Good to know that you may get texts or calls for someone else. Your tips about where to buy your SIM are a good one. Buying a SIM in Australia was one of the times where fraud was done on my credit card right after that purchase.

Nepal SIM Card Options: Ncell or Namaste?

SIM cards have always been a bit of a mystery to me. Prior to traveling, I didn’t even know you could change a SIM card. An expensive phone plan seemed like the only option. I remember Googling, “How to get a cheap phone plan for Asia.” One search after the other said, “SIM cards are cheaper than a phone plan.” So, I arrived in Asia and started switching my SIM card in every country I visited. The options for a Nepal SIM card are a little more complicated. I always joke with other tourists about how surprisingly good WiFi and cell service are in the country. I mean, you can literally check your e-mail at Everest Base Camp! The reason it’s a little more complicated is because there are two major SIM cards in Nepal, and they each have service in different areas.

Ncell SIM Card

Ncell is by far my preferred SIM card of choice. It seems to be the most popular in the Kathmandu Valley, and it’s easy to buy top up cards almost anywhere in Nepal. I’ve used it all over the country, and while it doesn’t work everywhere, it does seem to be the better choice if you’re moving around the country constantly.

Where to buy an Ncell SIM card in Nepal

This is where you have to be a little careful. Buying a SIM card is a great way to get ripped off in Nepal. People sell them for all different prices, and if you’re desperate, you’ll generally pay for the convenience. I got my SIM in Thamel, but I only go to one specific store. He’s the only guy (out of 20 shops) who didn’t try to rip me off. If you Google “Momo Hut Thamel” you’ll see it has an entrance to an alley way. Don’t go in the alley. To the right of the alley is a place with a sign that says “Digital Photo Print.” That’s the place. On a side note, Momo Hut makes some awesome Momo!

What to bring with you

In order to get a SIM, you’ll need a copy of your passport and visa (for Nepal) and a passport photo. You’ll also need to fill out a form at the shop. Most places just take a picture of my passport on their phone, but they will charge you for a passport photo if you don’t have one with you.

How to activate it

Usually, the person at the counter will be kind enough to activate your SIM for you, so this is super easy. Make sure to retain your old SIM for when you leave the country. It’s a good idea to keep the little packet that the SIM came in because it has your phone number and some instructions on it. I always take a photo of it as well just in case I loose the packet. Activation can take a day for some phones. Mine worked almost immediately. My mom and friends who visited recently also had theirs working in 15 minutes.

How to refill this SIM

If you’re in Nepal for a while, I highly recommend downloading the Ncell app to your phone. Like I said, people will try to rip you off. I’ve had people try to sell me a 100-rupee top up card for 200-rupees. That’s not how it works.

If you have the App, it’s super easy to add to your cell phone plan. I’d recommend just asking people for top up cards. You can buy them for 100 rupees each or buy larger ones (the price is clearly written on the card). In the app go to the “Shop” section. Then use the drop down menu to select “Sahi Pack (10 Times More).” These are the packages I like to pick from as they offer the best prices for a week or 30 days.

How much does the Ncell SIM card cost?

A Ncell SIM card usually costs no more than 300 rupees ($3). Then you can choose the plan you want. A 3-day plan and 2GB of data is 150 rupees ($1.50). A 7-day plan and 4GB of data is 250 rupees ($2.5). I tend to choose the 30-day plan with 16GB of data for 1050 rupees ($10.50). Overall, you should not spend more than $15-$17 USD for a SIM card and a month of 16GB of data. If you’re spending more than that, you’re likely being ripped off.

Please note: I update this blog as often as possible, but taxes have been going up quickly on SIM cards. Thank you to everyone who has commented with updates and helped me keep this post up to date. These prices were last updated in March 2020 .

The downfall is that this card doesn’t get great service in the mountains. I also wish the app would allow in app purchases. If you want to add data to your phone, you have to physically buy a scratch off top up card from a shop and type in the code.

Nepal Telecom “Namaste” SIM Card

Namaste seems to be the ultimate winner when it comes to getting cell service in the mountains. While my Ncell card will get service for the first few days of any major trek, it won’t receive even an inkling of service after that. Namaste, however, gets service in the mountains in areas you wouldn’t imagine. It’s the SIM card that most guides use in Nepal.

Where to buy NTC / Namaste SIM Card

Namaste can be purchased in tourist areas, however you might have a hard time finding it because it’s also called Nepal Telecom or NTC. At first, I thought these were 3 different SIMs, but they are all the same. I’m told you can also purchase this SIM at the airport (although I’ve found that line to be insanely long.) I’ve personally never purchased a Namaste SIM, so I don’t have a specific place to recommend. For me, not having cell service on a trek is nice, so this isn’t really a necessity for me. Also a lot of tea houses have WiFi these days.

Getting a Namaste SIM card is the same as an Ncell SIM. You’ll need a passport photo and a copy of your passport and visa (for Nepal). Plus, you’ll need to fill out a form at the shop.

I always ask the person at the counter to activate it for me. They should do this for free, and will be able to show you that it works and that the amount of data you bought is on the phone. SIM cards can take around a day to activate.

For the Namaste SIM, you’ll need to download the Nepal Telecom App. I’ve been told that the CDMA card is the way to go. The description says it has “Namaste” basic features. Honestly, I’ve never bought this or used the App so I’m not sure how user friendly it is. You can always refill the SIM at a local shop if you find one. Online, it says you can recharge your account by dialing 1414.

How much does the Namaste SIM cost?

I had a hard time finding this info online and have never used this SIM. The reason I’ve never used it is because it’s so hard to navigate information on it. If anyone has had one, please enlighten me in the comments. It looks like you pay per day for data. So .34GB (340MB) is 99 rupees ($1) but only lasts a day. There’s a variation of plans, but again it seemed confusing.

It’s so hard to find information on this SIM, and it seems most data can only be bought per day? I’ve also tried to find stores that sell them, and it’s not as readily available as Ncell which is super easy to purchase.

Protecting Your Data While Using a SIM

If you’re planning to get a SIM card or use WiFi in Nepal, I highly recommend looking into a VPN (virtual private network). This allows you to access websites with sensitive information (i.e. banking, booking sites, etc.) on a public network without having your information stolen. I had my credit card number stolen two times in Nepal, so a VPN is a must for me now. I recommend ExpressVPN. It’s easy to use and inexpensive. You can do a monthly plan for $12 or a yearly plan for $8 a month.

It’s good to mention the government tax in your story about the sim cards as well.

We went to the shop you mentioned next to the Momo hut and had a conversation about the data rates with the guy there, who seemed really sad about how things are informed on the internet.

The government imposed a tax on data and therefore the 16GB don’t cost Rs799, but Rs1050. The text that was sent to our phone clearly shows the basic costs of Rs799 and the tax of Rs221.24

Of course, I am always looking for places where I don’t feel ripped off too, but let’s be honest: this is already a cheap deal, and these guys have no influence on the government tax.

So for everybody who reads this: keep the government tax in mind and don ‘t argue with the people who sell it to you. Just let them show you how it works and you’ll see for yourself 🙂

Hey Maarten, Thanks for your response! I previously wrote “If the App says the plan is 799 rupees, you’ll actually need to buy 900-rupee worth… I think this might be a government tax.” Since I wrote the post last year, it’s a bit out of date on the price of the government tax (they raised it recently), but I know the man at that specific store is honest which is why I recommend people to go to him. I’ll update the info now so that it reflects the new tax 🙂 I tell people to be aware of being ripped off because I’ve had at least 10 people tell me that 16GB costs $24 and that was last year when it was only $9. So it’s still good to be mindful.

Hey Jay! I waited a few hours for Ncell but I’ve had friends who had to wait a day. Not sure why some are faster than others. Do you mean where to buy them near Boudha? Or which ones have the best service? I like Ncell within Kathmandu but I don’t know where to buy one near Boudha.

At the digital image shop now (100% sure its the place in this post) and the prices are now 1100rs for 5gb and 1500rs for 16gb. Includes the sim itself and they don’t ask for a passport photo. So either prices have risen since earlier this year or the tax has gone up. English speaking and friendly service!

If you already have the SIM card and just need to top up the data, then it will only be about 1050 rupees for the 16GB package. Hi Michelle, Great read! I second your opinion because Ncell is my preferred choice too. To answer your question, NTC sim card costs around 100 -200ish. I’m not so sure though. As far as the refill and data pack is concerned, I always go for digital wallets like Khalti.

Khalti offers online and offline Ncell recharge services in Nepal, pretty useful when you are travelling to the remote locations. One can also get up to 2% cashback on every recharge, so there’s that.

What To Pack For Nepal | Packing List With 46 Things To Bring

Nepal is a place of extreme environments and extreme weather which can change at any moment. What to pack for Nepal varies depending on where you plan to go. Therefore it's always a good idea to do some research before you travel to Nepal to ensure you have the right gear on your packing list.

If you are planning on trekking The Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Base Camp, Langtang Valley , Annapurna Panorama, Poonhill , Mohare Danda, Upper Mustang, around Manaslu, Helambu, Tilicho Base Camp, Namche Bazaar Trek and Solu Khumbu this Nepal packing list is perfect for you.

Depending on where you are traveling in Nepal you might need a lot of gear or might need very little as there are so many contrasting climates and different facilities, think about amenities to charging points for electronics while at some places there is not even electricity. If you are just hanging out in Kathmandu and or Pokhara then a standard travel/backpacking packing list is fine.

Expected temperatures per region in Nepal:

Kathmandu has a relatively stable climate with temperatures dropping to as low as 1 degree Celsius in winter while the warmer months see temperatures push the high 30's. A rain jacket is a must in Kathmandu with unexpected down pours of rain. If you only stick around the areas in Nepal, you can go by with a standard backpacking packing list.

Chitwan sees a lot of rain in the monsoon season along with decent all year round temperatures with the lowest temperatures dropping to 5 degrees Celsius in the cooler months and high 30's during the warmer months. Definitely add a rain jacket to your things to bring to Nepal list, it will be your best friend in Chitwan for sure.

Pokhara has the best all year-round temperatures with beautiful summers ranging from 22 to 35 degrees Celsius. In the winter temperatures can drop to -2 to 15 degrees Celsius. Planning on just hanging around Pokhara? A rain jacket and jumper are a must on your Nepal packing list, warm winter clothes are not really recommended.

Everest Base Camp

Given the altitude of Everest Base Camp, temperatures in the colder months can plummet to as low as -20 degrees Celsius. At any time of the year, it can snow at EBC so cold weather gear is a must. A Nepal trekking packing list looks slightly different as you can endure extreme temperatures.

Annapurna Base Camp

Annapurna Base Camp is a lot like EBC so expect freezing cold conditions all year round. Cold weather gear is always needed here. I did the Annapurna Basecamp trekking in 2013 and at the highest point I was wearing all the clothes listed in this packing list for Nepal! LOL :)

Langtang Valley

Temperatures at this Nepal off the beaten destination are much milder than the popular ABC and EBC treks. In June 2019 I did the Langtang Valley trek and brought most of the things listed in this Nepal packing list.

What is needed to travel to Nepal?

Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months upon entry then you are basically sorted! All European countries, USA, Canada and Australia can enter Nepal with a visa on arrival ranging from 15 to 90 days.

Do you need vaccinations for traveling to Nepal?

There is no need to show anyone that you have specific vaccinations when you travel to Nepal, but it is recommended to have the standard shots for childhood diseases: Diphtheria, Tetanus, Mumps, Measles and Rubella. Injections against Hepatitis A and B are recommended, but not necessary, the same for Rabius.

Is there Malaria in Nepal? Yes officially there is and you will find some tourists that take Malaria pills when traveling to Nepal. The risk of getting infected with Malaria is very small and almost non-existing especially in the tourist destinations in Nepal and the major trekking areas in Nepal. Therefore I would not recommend you taking Malaria pills.

So far I have spend 6 weeks traveling in Nepal and have been twice. My first time in 2013 and my second time in June 2019. Nepal is one of my favorite countries and also one of the best places to backpack in the world .

Hiring a guide/porter

Having a guide on your trek proves to be a lot better than without one. Guides provide extra knowledge on the area, the mountains and can translate with ease. Although a guide will cost extra, it will be worth it at the end of the day.

Having a porter isn't necessary but if you want to enjoy your trek without the hassle of a weighty bag, a porter may be of use. Just remember porters are people and can carry a maximum of 15 to 20 kilograms so please don't carry items that will be of no use on your trek.

What to Wear in Nepal

Trekking in Nepal is on everyone's bucketlist and I often get a lot of questions about what to pack for a trekking. At any time of the year, I recommend you to bring these things for trekking in Nepal:

1. Hiking Boots

A quick word of advice on hiking boots, I think they are overrated! :)

Hiking in the Nepal is seriously tough on your feet and the last thing you will want to do is wear a pair of cheap hiking boots that you just bought in Thamel. At least that is what everyone says! But then look at me… trekking in Nepal in flipflops!

So who am I to tell you that hiking boots are one of the Nepal travel essentials? :)

Anyway 99% of the people that go trekking in Nepal bring hiking boots, totally understandable! Ideally it's best to have worn in your boots 2 to 3 weeks before setting out on the trail. This ensures that your feet become accustomed to the materials in the boot while adjustments can be made with sock thickness and size.

Most of my trekking friends go with these hiking boots .

2. Running shoes

If you decided to go trekking in Nepal Traveltomtom style you save a lot of space, because hiking boots are not part of my packinglist for Nepal.

3. Havaianas

When buying a buff, make sure the material is breathable as the last thing you will want is a buff that is not breathable.

5. Sunglasses

Bring good sunnies! Apart from sunglasses stopping dust and light from hurting your eyes they are also great in cold and windy conditions especially at altitude. The higher you go, the more intense U.V (ultraviolet) light will be on your eyes and this is where sunglasses come in very handy. Make sure you buy proper sunglasses with UV filters before you travel to Nepal.

6. Down Jacket

A down jacket might be the most expensive item on this list but it will damn sure keep you warm! Down jackets are basically filled with feathers or a puffy material that acts as an insulator to keep out all of the cold air. These jackets are waterproof and an essential item on your Nepal trekking packing list.

7. Wind Jacket

Wind jackets are perfect for those cold and windy days trekking in Nepal. The material on a wind jacket is designed to bounce off wind and keep you a bit warmer however, make sure you have another layer underneath the wind jacket as it won't serve the same purpose as a down jacket. These wind stoppers are my favorite and easy to pack.

8. Couple Pair of socks

Never trust the weather forecast when trekking in Nepal. I would always pack 3 pairs of socks minimum for a 7 day trek. Having clean and dry socks is so crucial as there is nothing worse than trudging around in wet/damp socks. If that happens go the Traveltomtom way: on flipflops! :) Here are some thermal socks I use in case you fancy them.

9. Enough pair of underwear

You will always have room for extra underwear when on the trail so you can pack up to 10 pairs if need. Underwear are like socks, fresh is best and to me an essential item on my Nepal trekking packing list.

10. Thermal underlays

Thermals are probably my best tip for trekking in Nepal. They keep you warm when hiking in cold conditions. I would always carry one or two long sleeve tops when hiking in the Himalaya or anywhere else in the world. Thermal underwear are thin and light weight and provide great warmth, probably one of my favorite travel items when I go to colder countries.

11. Dry bag

Especially when carrying around expensive electronic items a dry bag comes in handy! I will always have one on me in case I need to put items in there if a storm approaches or a creek or river crossing is required. Here is a set of 3 dry bags , including one for your phone.

12. Hiking shorts

A good pair of hiking shorts or pants is an essential Nepal travel item, even if that means purchasing one pair just for the 7 days on the trail. If you buy a good pair, the materials will dry quickly when it would get wet and also abstain from bad smell. I suggest you pack 2 pairs of shorts for 10 days on the trail. A great alternative to lightweight hiking shorts are swimming pants with zippers. I got those… :)

13. Sleeping bag

Teahouses and guesthouses in Nepal will generally supply warm duvets however they won't keep you as warm as a sleeping bag some people say. Temperatures can plummet in the rooms quite quickly and there have been situations where the inside of my room was covered in ice.

Personally I swear by NOT bringing a sleeping bag when I go trekking in Nepal, but Im an exception! Almost people that go trekking in Nepal bring sleeping bags. My body is aching all night and keeps me really hot already, a blanket from the guesthouse does the job for me in combination with a long tracking pants and a t-shirt.

Also sleeping bags are more hygienically then a blanket used by hundreds of people before you! :)

A good sleeping bag is rated to -4 degrees Celsius and with additional blankets, thermals and socks you will be warm. Sleeping bags are expensive but if you are planning on doing more than 1 trek in Nepal or elsewhere in the world, the investment is worth it.

When purchasing a sleeping bag, make sure silk liner is included. The purpose of a silk liner is to keep the rest of the sleeping bag clean especially when you haven't washed or showered before you go to sleep. Something very common when trekking in Nepal! :)

They are a must and are perfect for those chilly mornings and late afternoons around the guesthouse. You gonna love wearing them when you set sail for an early morning departure. You can buy beanies everywhere in Kathmandu.

15. Emergency Blanket

This item is solely for your Nepal trekking packing list of course. An emergency blanket  (cheap, small & light) is a thin material used to warm the body in emergency situations. If you get stuck on a mountain or are feeling very cold, an emergency blanket will trap your body heat and warm you up in no time. Again weather in Nepal is extremely unpredictable so come prepared.

16.  Gloves

A good pair of gloves will make your trekking a whole lot more comfortable. I suggest a thin pair of gloves when going up in the Himalaya. In case you go to either ABC or EBS in the off season you may want to bring a pair of waterproof gloves made from wool.

17. Good day pack

I have always feared that I would be half way through a trek and my shoulder strap on my hiking bag would suddenly break, so far I have been lucky for this not to happen.

Make sure to have a solid daypack or small backpack large enough to carry your essential Nepal trekking items. In case you hire a porter you can even go with a much smaller bag. My favorite travel bag is my Pacsafe Venture , which I am not traveling with for many years and still works perfectly fine.

18. Rain cover for backpack

One thing I often forget is a rain cover for my hiking bag and with Nepal's ever changing climate, it can unexpectedly rain at any time so a plastic cover is essential for keeping all your stuff dry.

19. Hand warmers

In extreme conditions, gloves might not cut it therefore I will always carry 1 or 2 packets of hand warmers . They come in the form of small, soft packets that can be placed in the gloves loose spacing's and once activated can reach to 70 degrees Celsius. So use this Nepal trekking equipment list item with care! :)

20. Sunscreen

To contribute to a better world please add biodegradable sunscreen to your Nepal packing list. Get one with a high protection factor, especially for your face. it is a must when trekking in Nepal at altitude as the sun can be harsher on your skin.

21. Trekking Poles

Trekking poles are totally not my thing, but they make trekking much easier. I tried them once of friends and surprisingly loved using them for a little while. Must say though I was happy to give them back. I just want my hands to be free to take photos and for the sake of feeling free! :)

Trekking poles are great for steep descents and not so much going uphill. At least they give you a more complete workout while using them.

Toiletries and Medication Packing List

22. Sterilization Pen or similar

Water in Nepal cannot simply be consumed via a tap so to get around consuming too many bottles of water and compiling a pile of plastic bottles I pack a sterilization pen (Steri Pen) which has an ultraviolet light designed to eliminate all of the bad things in the water. A Steri pen takes about 1 to 2 minutes to treat 1 litre of water.

Chlorine tablets are another option and much cheaper. These tablets can be purchased in Thamel and take around 1 hour to work when add to water.

23. Imodium

Imodium will be your best friend if you have diarrhea, it's a real pity I didn't pack any for my recent trip to Langtang Valley.

24. Ibuprofen

Trekking can make you pretty raw and sore so I will always take with me Ibuprofen or pain killers to get me through rough patches. 

25. Paracetamol

For when headaches occur, paracetamol is best.

26. Nausea pills

If you feel nauseas, these pills will stop you from wanting to throw up although they aren't 100% guaranteed to work.

27. Bandages

Bandages are perfect for when you take a fall or sprain an ankle even break a bone.

28. Hydrolytes

Hydrolytes are basically extra salts that your body needs in order to keep hydrated. They come in the forms of small sachets and can be added to water for consumption. They also help mask the flavor of the water you are consuming if you choose a flavorsome pick!

29. Toilet Paper

Toilets will almost certainly never have a roll of toilet paper in them so you'll have to take your own. 1 roll of toilet paper will last 1 week for 1 person. If you run out of paper, most guesthouses will have some available for purchase.

30. Antibacterial or Hand Sanitizer

A tube of 100ML of hand sanitizer will last at least 7 days and is perfect for cleaning your hands after a trip to the bathroom.

It sounds simple, of course you are going to bring cash. But how much? Keep in mind that in rural areas in Nepal or when you go trekking there are NO atm's. Cash is an essential Nepal travel item. Here's a brief guide to a daily spend while on a trek in Nepal.

• Breakfast: Porridge and Black Coffee = 400 rupees
• Lunch: Daal Bhat = 500 rupees
• Dinner:  Vegetable Pasta = 500 rupees
• Drinks: 5 Tea = 500 rupees for a cup
• Total = 1,900 rupees/ $16 USD

Accommodation:

• 1 pax, 1 Room = 550 rupees
• 2 pax, 1 Room = 1,100 rupees
• Total = $10 USD for 2 people

The above prices are an estimation on what you will spend per day going on a trekking in Nepal. Keep in mind that the higher you go, the prices will be higher too. On the contrary I experienced in 2013 trekking Annapurna Basecamp that sleeping was everywhere $1 USD per bed only. The Langtang trek in June 2019 was more expensive but I recently met a fellow traveler who did the Annapurna circuit in July 2023 and he confirmed that the beds on the Annapurna Circuit are still $1 or $2 USD per night. Meals are between $3 to $5 USD.

32. Reading Material

I learnt very early when trekking in Nepal that nights can be very long in guesthouses as there isn't any entertainment. A book can be a very useful thing to bring to Nepal even if you are not a big reader.

I like to listen to music when I can't sleep or if I am just lying around so be sure to have a few good playlists lined up before heading out on the trek.

34. Trail Snacks for trekking

Trekking always requires a decent amount of snacks to keep the energy levels high. 4 Useful tips for trail snacks in Nepal:

• Stock up in Kathmandu as once you get to the start of the trail, there will be limitations on what is available for purchase.
• Food on the mountain is pretty standard and they serve simple meals and everywhere the same.
• Bring a lot as a couple days into the trek you may have already developed a dislike for the standard food.
• Always check the date of the food when purchasing in Nepal.

35. Reusable Water Bottle

I hate plastic bottles like the one you buy in a shop so I recommend you to purchased a reusable water bottle for traveling . Get a tough, hardy bottle designed to take a lot of beatings. Filling up your bottle is easy and having a Steri Pen or chlorine tablets ready makes most water along the trails drinkable.

36. Trek Map

Maps are super useful even if there are properly marked trails. If you cannot access phone data, a map will be the next best thing to navigating around the Himalaya. I like to use maps by Nepal Map Publisher. They can easily be bought in Kathmandu for around $5. These maps are highly detailed with contours, town names, location of hospitals to the names of Himalayan Mountains.

37. Power banks

Power banks are a must when hiking in Nepal and often the bigger, the better in terms of storage. There will be guesthouses that you come across that don't provide power so having a backup system is the best.

38. Mobile phone

Although being offline and away from civilization is one of the reasons I like to travel to Nepal, I would definitely recommend you to always have a mobile phone on you with an internet connection. It simply makes traveling much more convenient.

39. Camera equipment

As an avid photographer I of course travel with a bunch of camera gear. I use a Canon 80D and my favorite lens is a Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 , expensive but totally worth it. You might also want to consider a zoom lens for mountain photography.

Although it has a lot of issues I still swear by a GoPro Hero 7 Black . Its software could and user experience could be much better but I love the content is shoots.

41. Adaptors

European adaptors are compatible with power sockets in Nepal. These are adaptors that have 2 skinny metal pins, get you world travel adapter here.

42. Portable Solar Panel

Depending on how remote your trek is, there might be no power available at all. I sometimes use a portable solar panel which I attach to the top of bag and throughout the day, I am charging one of my two power banks. 

Once you have arrived at your guesthouse or destination, simply attach a power bank to the panel and place in the sun!

43. Battery Warmer

Nights can get very cold in Nepal and cold conditions are not good for batteries. After I finished using my cameras, I will take out all of the batteries and put them insulated container which I then will put in my sleeping bag at night this way the batteries will stay warm and are unlikely to loose charge. 

Another great option is a sock or your buff; simply put the batteries in the item and put in your sleeping bag when going to bed.

44. GPS tracker

A global positioning satellite is one of those tools you need when doing serious off the trail adventuring or even if you just want to make sure you're on track.

Epirbs are great for safety and tracking purposes. If something goes wrong on the trail or you really get lost, press the button on the Epirb and you will be rescued… eventually. An Epirb usually works like this; you inform a close relative or parent of where you intend to travel, how long for and why then go online and login to the Epirb that you have via a special code.

For example, I assign my parents to receive any information that comes from the Epirb such as the distress beacon call and once that is pressed, my parents will be informed that I am in trouble. From this point, my parents need to inform the police, rescue teams, ambulance, etc about my whereabouts.

46. Head lamps

Head Lamps are a necessary item if heading out early, arriving late or just heading to the bathroom at night. Make sure to pack a spare pair of batteries too. Head lamps or torches are a very common backpacking travel item you will find on any packing list!

Backpack or suitcase for traveling in Nepal?

I have now traveled the world continuously for more than 7 years and been to more than 100 countries and never owned a big backpack. Some of my travel friends swear by a backpack.

Of course a backpack is much easier when traveling to Nepal, especially when you go trekking. But… a big daypack will do the job too! For multi day trekking it is useless to bring all your stuff. It is completely normal to store your big backpack in a hotel/hostel in either Kathmandu, Pokhara or the trailhead.

Traveling with a backpack comes in handy when you decide to check out accommodation on the spot instead of booking online. But mostly you will go from taxi, to bus, to hotel, to taxi, to airport, just saying…

Personally I swear by my big Rimowa suitcase at the moment and my Pacsafe Venture daypack. Some of my friends still travel with a big 60/90L backpack and they rave about it as well. It leave it up to you…

Last tips for your Nepal packing list

This is pretty much the essential list of items that you need to pack for Nepal if you go trekking. If you are planning on doing more serious adventures like mountain climbing or whitewater rafting, you may need to do some research for what best suits that type of adventure.

One of the best tips I live by when packing for Nepal is “if you think you won't use, you won't need it”! The last thing you'll need when trekking at altitude is an over packed and heavy bag.
