PM Modi to Visit Odisha on Sept 17 for Grand Launch of Subhadra Yojana

pm modi visit odisha

Bhubaneswar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Odisha on September 17 to officially launch the Subhadra Yojana, a significant women welfare initiative by the newly elected BJP government.

The launch event will take place at Janata Maidan in Bhubaneswar, where the Prime Minister is expected to arrive at 11:35 am, with the programme scheduled for 12 noon.

In addition to launching the Subhadra Yojana, PM Modi is also expected to lay the foundation stones for several other welfare schemes. Notably, the event coincides with PM Modi's birthday, adding a symbolic touch to the occasion.

The Subhadra Yojana is aimed at empowering women by providing them with financial assistance. Eligible women will receive Rs 50,000 in cash over a period of five years. The assistance will be disbursed in two equal installments of Rs 10,000 annually.

The first installment is set to be released on International Women’s Day (March 8), while the second will be released on Raksha Bandhan. This scheme was a prominent promise during the BJP’s election campaign and is seen as a key factor in the party's victory over the long-reigning Biju Janata Dal (BJD).

With the BJP coming to power in Odisha after 24 years of BJD rule, the launch of Subhadra Yojana is expected to further strengthen the party's commitment to women’s socio-economic empowerment.

PM Modi to visit Odisha, address first public meeting in the state in nearly 5 years

pm modi visit odisha

Bhubaneswar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in Odisha on Saturday afternoon to unveil projects worth Rs 68,400 crore, including the new campus of IIM-Sambalpur, officials said. During the visit, Modi will address a public meeting, his first in the state in nearly five years.

The prime minister will reach the Jharsuguda airport around 1 pm, and head to the IIM-Sambalpur campus where CM Naveen Patnaik, Governor Raghubar Das and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan will join him, they said.

Besides the Rs 400-crore campus, Modi will also unveil infrastructure projects worth Rs 68,000 crore. These projects span sectors such as power, roads and railways.

Modi will address a public meeting at Remed Ground around 3 pm, before leaving for Guwahati, officials said.

He had addressed the last public meeting in the state in April 2019 in Kendrapara in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls and assembly elections in the state, which were held simultaneously. The prime minister visited the state thrice since then but did not address a rally.

The PM visited the state when cyclone Fani hit the state just after the 2019 elections. He came here again after cyclone Amphan in 2020, and then in June last year following the triple train crash in Balasore.

"PM Modi's Sambalpur visit is politically important. We are elated that he will address a public meeting after a long gap in the state," said state BJP president Manmohan Samal.

The PM's visit to the state comes amid the Congress upping its ante, claiming that the ruling BJD and opposition BJP were working together.

Earlier this week, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge addressed a mega rally in Bhubaneswar, while next week, the Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra is scheduled to enter the state.

Silent on Naveen Patnaik rule, PM Modi targets Congress in first Odisha rally after 2019

Pointing out that modi's attack on bjd govt would have boosted state bjp cadre's morale ahead of the polls, a senior bjp leader admitted that patnaik has 'close ties' with party high command.

PM in Odisha

In his first public rally in Odisha in five years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday lashed out at the Congress for “neglecting and insulting Odisha”, but remained silent over the 24-year rule of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) led by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik .

It is another matter that the Odisha BJP leaders have been urging people to usher in change in the state in the upcoming simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly polls. The BJP is the principal Opposition in the state.

pm modi visit odisha

PM Modi addressed the rally immediately after he and CM Patnaik shared a stage on a different occasion — the inauguration of the Sambalpur campus of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), where the PM hailed the BJD supremo as “his friend”. Patnaik also lauded Modi, saying: “The PM has set a new direction for India and we are on the path to becoming an economic power house.”

Modi, who later addressed the public meeting organised by the state BJP at Remed in Sambalpur, made his “guarantee” pitch and listed his government’s contribution to Odisha in different fields. He also drew a comparison between the Centre’s contribution to the state before 2014 and in the past 10 years under his rule.

PM Modi had last addressed a public rally in the state at Kendrapada on April 23, 2019, before the fourth phase of polling for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, where he had targeted Patnaik over violence against BJP workers, comparing Odisha with neighbouring Bengal.

Festive offer

He had then charged that “Bengal-type violence” had been used in Odisha against his party’s cadre, and that administrative officers had ignored it. “Naveen Babu, you are going, it’s decided. These handful of officers cannot save you,” he had then said.

Months before, while addressing a rally at Jharsuguda on September 22, 2018, PM Modi had attacked the Patnaik government over alleged corruption. “Without bribes and corruption, it’s not possible to get work done in Odisha,” Modi had then alleged.

Even Union Home Minister Amit Shah had dubbed Patnaik as a “burnt transformer” before the 2019 polls, and called the people to oust the BJD government.

It all changed after 2019 polls, when the BJD extended support to the Modi government inside and outside Parliament on numerous issues, including the passage of key legislation and the Presidential election. In return, it earned praise from the PM in Parliament in February 2022 over the mining sector’s “reforms”.

Likewise, Amit Shah, during his visit to Odisha in August last year, hailed Patnaik as a “popular CM” and lauded his steps in disaster management and containing of the “Maoist menace”. A month later, Patnaik gave PM Modi a ranking of 8/10 for his foreign policies and steps taken to fight corruption.

Modi’s Sambalpur speech Saturday was keenly watched by the state BJP leaders, as it was expected to set the tone for the party’s campaign in Odisha for the 2024 polls due in the next two months.

Pointing out that Modi’s attack on the BJD government would have boosted the morale of the state BJP cadre ahead of the polls, a senior BJP leader admitted that Patnaik has “close ties” with the party high command. He, however, ruled out speculation about any pre-poll alliance between the two parties.

Underlining the BJP’s contributions in Odisha, Modi said it is the BJP that had made a tribal daughter of the state ( Droupadi Murmu ) the President of India, and targeted the Congress and its allies for opposing her candidature.

“When she (President Murmu) addressed Parliament three days back, the entire world listened to her every word. My dear brothers and sisters, you should remember that it’s the Congress and its allies that had used all their might against Droupadi Murmu,” said Modi.

“ Wo Droupadi ji ka apaman nahi… Samagra desh ka Adivasi samaj ka apaman hai… Ye mere pyare Odisha ka bhi apaman hai … (It wasn’t only an insult to Droupadi ji, but also an insult to India’s entire tribal community and to Odisha),” said Modi, while projecting his government’s push for tribal welfare.

He said Odisha had to worry for its dues when there was “Congress ka raj” (Congress rule) in Delhi, and assured that there will be no dearth of money for Odisha’s development under the BJP’s rule.

Claiming that he visits Odisha with a resolution to accelerate the state’s development, he reminded people of visits by Congress leaders before 2014 in an apparent dig at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi — who had visited Kalahandi to support the Dongria Kondh tribe in their fight against the bauxite mining project in Niyamgiri Hills.

“These people used to visit Kalahandi to be photographed in tribal hamlets, which would be shown on TV and in newspapers, projecting a poverty-stricken image of Odisha,” said Modi, accusing the Congress of having made the bids to deprive Odisha of development.

Hitting out at the Congress for “corruption”, Modi alleged that before 2014, corruption was bigger than the Budget . He said India’s youth were disappointed before 2014, as their future was in the dark, while the youth of today are confident because of the “ imandaar aur majboot (honest and strong)” BJP government.

Highlighting his government’s decision to confer the Bharat Ratna on former Deputy PM L K Advani, PM Modi hailed the BJP stalwart’s contribution to popularising nationalist ideology in the country besides opposing dynasty politics.

Odisha train accident: PM Modi to visit Balasore today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi left for Odisha on Saturday to survey the site of the three-train accident in Balasore district. The horrific train accident on Friday night claimed the lives of nearly 300 people and left over 900 injured.

According to the details, the prime minister will first go to the site of the train accident site and then visit a hospital in Cuttack, where some of the injured have been admitted.

Meanwhile, the railways today said the rescue operations at the accident site were over.

The train crash, the fourth deadliest in India according to available records, happened near the Bahanaga Baazar station in Balasore district, about 250 km south of Kolkata and 170 km north of Bhubaneswar, around 7 pm on Friday, prompting the Railway Ministry to order a probe.

The inquiry into the train accident will be led by AM Chowdhary, Commissioner Railway Safety, South East Circle, the Indian Railways said in a statement. The Commissioner Railway Safety comes under the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

ODISHA TRAIN ACCIDENT: THE IMPACT

A goods train was also involved in the accident as some of the coaches of the Coromandel Express, which was heading to Chennai, hit its wagons after getting derailed.

Gas cutters were used to extricate the bodies from under the derailed coaches. Disaster management personnel and firemen were also drawn in to extricate bodies.

Railway tracks were almost destroyed at the spot as mangled coaches lay strewn all over, with some having mounted on another, while a few coaches turned turtle due to the impact. Pijush Poddar, a resident of Berhampore in West Bengal's Murshidabad district, was travelling to Tamil Nadu on the Coromandel Express to join work there when the accident happened.

"We were jolted and suddenly saw the train bogie turn to one side. Many of us were thrown out of the compartment by the momentum of the derailment. When we managed to crawl out, we found bodies lying all around," he told PTI.

Locals said they heard consecutive loud sounds, following which they rushed to the spot and found the derailed coaches, which were nothing but "a mangled heap of steel".

"The local people really went out on a limb to help us... They not only helped in pulling out people but retrieved our luggage and got us water, " Rupam Banerjee, one of the passengers, told reporters.

One of the coaches “was pushed into the ground " as another from a neighbouring train collapsed on top of it, passengers said.

Real estate partner, more seats & comfort: four 20-coach vande bharat trains ready to offer ride to 30% more passengers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off 10 new Vande Bharat trains from Jamshedpur this Sunday. (File photo)

News18 has learnt that there are currently four 20-coach Vande Bharat trains with the Indian Railways, including two with the Northern Railways. Official documents seen by News18 show that one 20-coach Vande Bharat was manufactured each month starting from May

When the Indian Railways decided to run its first Vande Bharat train back in 2019, the route selected was Delhi and Varanasi. It was a 16-coach train. The demand between the two stations was so high that in December 2023, the railways offered another 16-coach train on the route. Now, in a further upgrade, the railways has decided to replace one of these existing trains with a 20-coach Vande Bharat train set from next week, News18 has learnt.

Usually, trains have 22 to 24 coaches. But in case of Vande Bharat, it is either eight- or 16-coach, something similar to Shatabdi Express. But it is the first time the number of coaches has been increased to 20 for Vande Bharat trains. A Ministry official told News18 that the 16-coach Vande Bharat, with two executive class coaches, offers ridership to 1,128 passengers at a time. “With 20 coaches, this will increase around 30% to 1,440 passengers,” they said, demanding anonymity.

News18 has also learnt that there are currently four 20-coach Vande Bharat trains with the Indian Railways, including two with the Northern Railways. Official documents seen by News18 show that one 20-coach Vande Bharat was manufactured each month starting from May.

The first one was allocated to the Ministry, while those manufactured in June and July were allocated to Northern Railways. The last one – allocated in August – was given to the Eastern Railways.

While one of these 20-coach train sets has been allocated to the Delhi-Varanasi route, railways is yet to disclose the routes for the remaining train sets. Last month, the trial run for the 20-coach Vande Bharat train was conducted on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route – where two 16-coach Vande Bharat trains are already operational.

So far, the Vande Bharat trains had either 16 or eight coaches. In a standard 16-coach Vande Bharat, there are eight motor cars, four trailer cars and two non-driving trailer cars and two driving trailer cars. There are two classes in Vande Bharat trains – Chair Car and Executive Class. In the 16-coach train, only two are Executive Class, while 14 are chair cars. In the eight coach Vande Bharat, there is only one executive class.

The Ministry is also planning for 24-coach train sets. Last month, the railways reworked its Rs 35,000-crore tenders for Vande Bharat. As against 16-coach 120 train sets, now the Ministry wants 24-coach 80 Vande Bharat train sets.

POLL-BOUND JHARKHAND IN FOCUS

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off 10 new Vande Bharat trains from Jamshedpur this Sunday. Earlier this week, Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced that PM Modi will visit Jamshedpur on September 15. These trains will have either eight or 16 coaches.

Jharkhand, which will have assembly polls likely around year-end, will get at least three new Vande Bharat trains, officials have confirmed. At least two of these trains will be from Tata Nagar – one for Patna (Bihar) and another for Brahmapur (Odisha). Another train will be between Bidhnath Dham in the state to Varanasi. Both the cities are home to Jyotirlingas.

Jharkhand already has three Vande Bharat trains – all from Ranchi. The capital city is connected with Patna, Howrah and Varanasi.

While the railways is yet to announce the new trains and routes, News18 has also learnt that there will be three trains for Odisha as well, including the Tata Nagar–Brahmapur. The other routes will be Rourkela-Howrah and Durg-Visakhapatnam.

Odisha already had three operational Vande Bharat, including two from Puri – one each for Rourkela and Howrah and another between Bhubaneswar and Visakhapatnam.

Last month, three new Vande Bharat trains were added to the fleet taking the tally to 54. As of date, around 110 Vande Bharat Express train services are operational across the country, extending connectivity to close to 300 districts.
