Fun and educational tour!

The Virtual Reality Tour of the Colosseum was very fun! You get to see a reconstruction of the arena and lots of information on its history. I liked that it was like a game. I had never used a VR headset before, but it was really easy, and a staff member explained everything before the tour started. It was so cool to see gladiators fighting right in front of us, just like in ancient Roman times. This tour was definitely worth it!

Unique view of the Colosseum

This tour was really interesting and gave us a unique look into what the Colosseum looked like in the past! A great benefit of this tour is that you get Colosseum tickets to enter the monument afterward, and it was super interesting to see the difference between the Colosseum 2,000 years ago and today. It’s something you can’t get by just walking inside the Colosseum with a standard ticket!

SEE THE COLOSSEUM WHEN IT WAS NEW

See the Colosseum in the most unique way possible! The Colosseum has suffered a lot of damage in 2,000 years, but modern technology allows us to reconstruct it digitally. We can only see one-third of the monument in real life! In an earthquake in 1349, a big part of its outer walls collapsed, which is very noticeable today and makes the Colosseum look incomplete. Not only were there natural disasters, but also a lot of vandalism. The building had marble seats and many decorative elements, but they were all removed because the Colosseum was seen as a source of materials for a whole millennium. The monument looked a lot more resplendent in its prime, and VR technology makes it possible to see it in all its glory!

GO FROM MODERN TO ANCIENT ROME

You will experience what it was like to be a gladiator in the Colosseum's underground tunnels, preparing to go out to the arena floor and defend their life. They were usually slaves or prisoners, and if they did not want to fight, they would be whipped or hurt with red-hot metal bars. The practice was so barbaric there was even an uprising of gladiators. Led by Spartacus, they beat Roman armies nine times! You can also put yourself in the shoes of the Romans in the audience and try to understand why they enjoyed violent shows like the ones put on in the arena.

HEAR ABOUT ITS HISTORY

The Colosseum Virtual Reality Tour includes an audio commentary packed with stories and interesting facts about the history of this famous landmark and Rome. For example, did you know that the arena floor was often made to look like an exotic location with trees and rocks for hunting shows?

PRIORITY ACCESS TO THE COLOSSEUM, FORUM & PALATINE

After seeing the virtual reconstruction of the amphitheater when it was still shiny and new, you will go on a Colosseum self-guided tour and experience it with new eyes. It is a valuable experience you can't get otherwise! Not only that, but you can also walk on the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill to see where Romans liked to meet up with their friends, build palaces, and where famous historical events happened.

Did Emperors Ever Fight in the Colosseum?

Did you know that Roman emperors were also gladiators? Well, sort of. Emperor Commodus competed in the arena. According to sources, he went insane and was often dressed as Mercury and used a bow and arrow. Rumors circulated in Rome that he was the illegitimate son of a gladiator. He made hundreds of appearances in the arena, but, of course, he was the emperor, so he wasn’t really in danger and usually just shot wild animals like lions from a platform. During his time as emperor in the 2nd century AD, he even gave Rome a new name, the Colony of Commodus, which didn’t really catch on.

Tour Description

Meet your guide: luca.

the colosseum rome virtual tour

Hi! My name is Luca and I was born in Rome 43 years ago. At the age of 17 I set off for the United States for my senior year of High School in Milwaukee, WI. Back in Italy, I went on to college and got a master's degree in archaeology. My work as an archaeologist took me all over Italy, and even to Egypt! 10 years ago I earned my tour guide qualification, and decided to join the Through Eternity team. I have been taking visitors around Rome ever since, trying to inspire them and give them an unforgettable experience of the Eternal City. I hope I’ll be able to get back to it soon when all this is over!

Relive a Day at the Roman Games and Discover the Secrets of the Arena

Join Luca to discover the fascinating history of the Colosseum: learn how the massive amphitheatre was constructed on the site of the hated emperor Nero’s Golden House, and the massive slave labour that made its construction possible. Relive the extraordinary inaugural games that lasted 100 days, and discover how the games would continue here for fully five centuries as a key guarantor of social cohesion in the Imperial capital.

Get ready to relive an entire day at the games: from the gruesome wild animal hunts that brought north-African hippos and lions to the verge of extinction to the spectacle of criminals being fed to the beasts in bizarre re-enactments of ancient myths, Roman bloodlust knew no bounds. But the highlight of the games for any ancient Roman was of course the gladiator battles that pitted armed combatants against one another in brutal but highly choreographed duels to the death.

Walk in the Virtual Footsteps of the Gladiators onto the Arena Floor

On your virtual tour of the Colosseum with Luca you'll find out everything you could want to know about the gladiators: discover where they came from and how they lived in the spartan surroundings of gladiator schools. Learn about their punishing training regimes under the watchful guide of their lanista , and how they were a lot chubbier than Russell Crowe. We'll also be recreating the intense drama of their mortal combats on the sands of the arena, and discovering what happened to the winners and the losers - hint: it involved a giant mace.

Explore the Dark World of the Colosseum's Underground

Explore the Colosseum’s various levels. Learn how where you sat depended on who you were, from the ringside Imperial box and the areas reserved for senators and Vestal Virgins to the nosebleed seats reserved for women and slaves at the very top of the amphitheatre.

We’ll also be taking a virtual journey down into the dark world of the Colosseum’s underground Hypogeum . This dark warren of tunnels and cells that were hidden beneath the arena floor is perhaps the most atmospheric part of the whole amphitheatre. It was here that gladiators and beasts awaited their turn on the arena above. Learn about the ingenious elevators that winched them upwards, and the backbreaking labour of the slaves who made the games possible.

If you’re frustrated about not being able to get to Rome right now, we believe our immersive virtual Colosseum tour with Luca is the next best thing. Discover the secrets of the extraordinary ancient amphitheatre with us today!

Tour Reviews

5.0 (11 reviews)

My family and I toured the Colosseum with Luca as our guide while we were in Rome in July 2018. When I saw that he was offering virtual tours during the Pandemic, I signed up my entire office to enjoy his tour. Each of us thoroughly enjoyed Luca's virtual tour and his remarkable way of bringing excitement and engagement even into a virtual tour. Even though I toured the Colosseum with Luca in 2018, his ability to use additional media with his virtual tour allowed him to delve deeper into the history and culture that was ancient Rome and the Colosseum. Beacuse of Luca's training and active archeology in Rome, he brings a special perspective and passion for its history. My family is looking for another virtual tour by Luca until we can return back to Rome and be yet again inspired by him and his limitless knowledge of Rome and his history. Don't hesitate to meet and join him on a virtual tour!

Jeffrey - Oct 13, 2020

My husband and and I learned such a wealth of information from Luca about the history of the Colliseum! Just felt that we were in Rome for the hour to take us away from being quarantined in Missouri. Thank you SO much!!!

Virtual Tour of the Colosseum and Roman Forum

Explore the ancient world of rome without stepping out your front door with our virtual tour of the colosseum and roman forum..

The Colosseum and Roman Forum are two of Rome ’s most visited attractions. Every year, millions of travellers come walk through the commanding arch entrances to explore the world of Ancient Rome and imagine life here two thousand years ago under the Western Roman Empire. While both attractions are currently closed, that doesn’t mean we can’t discover the fascinating history and stories these two sites offer. So whether you are in your travel gear or your pyjamas, explore with us on our virtual tour of the Colosseum and Roman Forum.

Also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre after the dynasty responsible for its construction between 72 – 80 AD, the Colosseum is an iconic symbol Ancient Rome situated in the heart of the modern city. The huge amphitheatre was the stage for violet public spectacles including gladiatorial fights, battle re-enactments and executions. ‘

It could accommodate up to 80,000 spectators in seating arranged according to class with the best seats reserved for senators and exclusive boxes for the emperor. The spectators could be sheltered from the sun by awnings that were rolled out from the roof. Beneath the wooden stage was a series of tunnels and cages that housed slaves and animals to be released into the arena via trapdoors and pulleys.

Arch of Constantine

Exiting the Colosseum, to your left you will notice the imposing Arch of Constantine. The triumphal arch towered over the route taken by victorious military leaders when entering Rome. It was commissioned by the senate to commemorate ten years of Constantine rule and his victory at the Battle of Milvian Bridge.

Arch of Titus

Palatine Hill

Roman Forum

Travelling back down to the lowlands between Palatine and Capitoline Hills you will arrive at the Roman Forum. This area was once the centre of commercial, political and religious life in Ancient Rome. Wander amongst the ruins to admire important monuments including the House of Vestal Virgins , Temple of Saturn and the Senate (Curia).

While this virtual tour may have offered you a taste of some of the delightful sights and stories of these ancient icons, nothing beats exploring in real life. We hope to see you in Rome soon for a tour in the flesh!

10 Best Colosseum Tours to Book in 2024 + Planning Tips

Photo of author

Symbol of Romans’ engineering genius, here you will find the best Colosseum tours to discover and delve into one of Rome’s most famous landmarks. Also known as Amphitheatre Flavium, it was built around 70AD. Since then, it has been the place for shows and games as well as a period of decline after the fall of the Roman Empire. After centuries, this huge amphitheater has shown no sign of cooling and keeps the record of being one of the most popular Rome attractions and one of the best Roman archaeological sites.

There are many ways you can visit the Colosseum , and while going independently might sound cheaper, it can also be quite time-consuming and not as valuable as booking a Colosseum private tour. Why? Because with a tour you can skip the line and save plenty of time, especially in crowded seasons, and because a tour leader can talk to you about historical Colosseum facts and anecdotes that otherwise you might not discover on your own.

Find here the best tours of the Colosseum in Rome. Choose the experience that better fits your needs and travel preferences. All these tours include Colosseum tickets skip-the-line to make sure you don’t queue for an hour or two and don’t take too much time off the other Roman landmarks .

Even though it’s one of Rome’s main tourist attractions, there are many things to know and learn about this ancient amphitheater. This is why a Colosseum and Roman Forum tour is essential if you are interested in going beyond just looking at the architecture.

Whether you book a private Colosseum underground tour or an exclusive Colosseum night tour, you will learn and see much more than with a simple ticket entrance to the general access area. We selected the best Colosseum tours for every preference. Whether you only want to visit the general access areas while learning about the whole structure, or also walk the arena floor and gladiators’ dungeon.

Which tour of the Colosseum is best?

My favorite tour companies in Rome are Walks and LivTours . I have taken many tours with them so it’s only natural that these are what I recommend. The best Colosseum tours to book are those that also include the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill so that in one tour you will have visited some of the most important archaeological sites in Rome . Ideally, they should be also inclusive of skip-the-line tickets which help avoid waiting up to an hour during hot summer days in the line.

This comes really handy especially if you are traveling to Rome with kids or elderly friends and family. If one of the things to do in London with kids in fact is to discover Harry Potter’s places, in Rome, this goes for gladiators and ancient Roman shows and fights.

Countless companies are providing fantastic tours of the Colosseum in Rome. For a more complete experience, you can book a tour that includes also the Arena Floor and/or the Underground because you are going to have the full picture of what was really going on during the famous shows in Ancient Rome, how the Colosseum was built and organized, and what happened backstage.

We have listed some of the best Colosseum tours for you to help you decide which one is best for you.

Is it worth getting a guided tour of the Colosseum?

Getting a guided tour of the Roman Colosseum is totally worth it if you want to learn more than what you would grasp by looking at the ruins by yourself. A tour will be led by an expert guide, often a historian or an archaeologist, who will give you insights you are likely to miss on your own.

I have visited the Colosseum many times, sometimes on my own and sometimes on a guided tour. The historians leading the tours I took incredibly increased the value and my knowledge about the place, its complex architecture, its original appearance, what everybody would do inside the Colosseum, whether they were the fighters, the staff coordinating the different parts, and the public.

Is the Colosseum Underground tour worth it?

Booking a tour where also the Colosseum Underground is included is always a great option. The undergrounds and the dungeon had their specific purpose and required great engineering skills to be built. So it’s important to get to know also this area to make your experience more complete.

Not all the tours include also the Colosseum Underground, just like they don’t all include the Arena Floor. These are the areas that are not open to the general public who only booked a standard ticket and they require a guide to access. Usually, the undergrounds and the arena floor are on the same tours and these are the experiences I recommend.

Can you do a self-guided tour of the Colosseum?

You can always book skip-the-line tickets and explore the Colosseum at your own pace. These will give you access to the floors open to all visitors. If you want to access also the arena floor and the dungeon, you will need to book a private tour with a certified guide.

How long should you spend at the Colosseum?

I recommend staying at least 2 to 3 hours inside the Colosseum to visit and explore all its areas and sections, so the bleachers where the spectators watched the shows and fights, the undergrounds and the area floor.

Tips to enjoy your Colosseum tour

  • Book online. Whether you are doing a private guided tour or an official certified tour, booking online is always recommended even if you are only buying a skip-the-line ticket.
  • Bring your ID. Don’t forget your national ID or passport as they will be checked at the entrance.
  • Get there early. Even if you have a specific time for the start of your tour, I suggest getting there at least 10 to 15 minutes earlier to meet your tour guide and to
  • Wear comfortable shoes. Inside the Colosseum, you will walk a lot and you will occasionally do some stairs so definitely you don’t want to wear high heels or even flip flops. Wear a pair of runners, sneakers, or walking sandals.
  • Don’t wear a backpack. Backpacks and wheeled suitcases are not allowed in the Colosseum and there is no cloakroom so don’t carry yours otherwise it will be confiscated or you won’t be allowed in. You can bring a purse or a crossbody bag.
  • Bring a bottle of water. Don’t forget to carry a reusable water bottle to remain hydrated. Inside the Colosseum, there are also small fountains where you can refill it.
  • Wear sunscreen or a hat. Visiting the Colosseum takes place almost completely open-air so in summer make sure you don’t forget to wear sunscreen or a hat.

9:00 AM 11:00 AM 1:00 PM

Take part in a Colosseum Virtual Reality Guided Tour and start your journey in Ancient Rome . Join the group and set off with a tour guide to discover the Colosseum .

The Colosseum is the largest and most famous Roman amphitheater in the world. Through an exciting, fun and immersive 3D experience, learning its long history has never been easier. It is an experience suitable for all age groups. This way you will give shape and color to your imagination.

What to see in Colosseum Virtual Reality Tour

Meet your tour guide and listen to his or her instructions to make the most of the headset. Trace the history of the Colosseum through three distinct areas: the square; the arena; and finally the Colosseum underground .

With our animated 3D reconstruction complemented by professional multilingual music and audio, exploring the Colosseum has never been more fun! All the contents within the reconstruction that you will observe, were handled by the well-known Prof. Filippo Coarelli and by the Digilab Archeo & Arte3D department of the La Sapienza University of Rome .

By taking part in a Colosseum Virtual Reality Guided Tour , you will find yourself, in other words, walking virtually in the ancient square of the Colosseum ; you can then admire the fountain of the gladiators, the Meta Sudans; the Temple of Venus and Rome; the majestic Colossus of Nero from which the name “ Colosseum ” derives; and the Arch of Constantine , in all its grandeur.

In the Arena Floor Colosseum , raise your head towards the Velarium, its gigantic red curtain that closes to start the show; he walks among the roar of ferocious lions; then witness the fights between gladiators ; to conclude, he puts on the emperor’s robes and takes his place. Decide the fate of the wounded gladiator with: “Death” or “Grace”! To conclude the experience, descend into the mysterious Colosseum underground to observe the slaves moving in silence between narrow and dark corridors, ready to prepare all the tools necessary to make the show a success. If you look around you will notice the gladiators sharpening their weapons and the various cages in which the hungry beasts wait to be lifted from the elevators inside the arena.

Once you enter the Colosseum…

The time has come to discover what is left today of all the structure you have seen in Virtual Reality .

Together with your tour guid e, enter the most famous monument in the world, the Flavian Amphitheater. Thanks to a Colosseum Virtual Reality Guided Tour , avoid the long queues thanks to the Colosseum Ticket Skip the Line . After the security checks, let its magic overwhelm you completely. Hear the stories about its construction, which took place over 8 years; take unforgettable photos; and finally, close your eyes imagining you are there.

Observe every little detail. The shiny white marbles that covered the floor; the ceiling richly decorated with sculptures and frescoes; go up to the first level and look out to observe the ancient structure of the Ludus Magnus, the gymnasium of the gladiators ; find out where the senators sat; crosses the museum, with all its archaeological evidence. So live it; observe it; and imagine it. Your tour guide will be at your complete disposal to answer any questions or concerns.

Once the Colosseum Guided Tour is over, you will be given directions to continue the visit in total autonomy within the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill . Are you still eager to delve into your journey into the history of Ancient Rome , follow your tour guide at the entrance. Using the same Colosseum Ticket Skip the Line , if you wish, you can continue exploring the magnificent temples of Rome ; the columns; the triumphal arches and the sumptuous Domus of the emperor Domitian.

Before leaving, you will have all the information you need to be able to continue alone in the Roman Forum and on the Palatine Hill . In conclusion, take part in a Colosseum Virtual Reality Guided Tour and go home having lived an unforgettable experience!

Bellissima esperienza!!

A Virtual Tour of Ancient Rome, Circa 320 CE: Explore Stunning Recreations of The Forum, Colosseum and Other Monuments

in Architecture , History , Technology | August 5th, 2020 4 Comments

If you’re a regular reader of this site, you’re likely familiar with the simulation hypothesis , the idea that conscious experience is nothing more than a computer program. This concept has many sci-fi implications, from Matrix -like scenarios to the radical idea that everything in the universe is software, run by incomprehensible beings who might as well be gods. One of the more plausible versions suggests that we are living in an “ancestor simulation,” designed by future human societies to recreate their past.

Presumably, simulated ancestors would create their own ancestor simulations and so on, ad infinitum . There’s no way to know where on the continuum we fall, but wherever it is, ancestor simulations are on the way… maybe. They’re rudimentary at the moment, consisting of immersive video games and VR recreations of ancient cities.

Each iteration, however, is better than the last, as we have seen in the case of Rome Reborn (or Rome Reborn®), a 3D digital modeling project designed to recreate the city’s architecture as it was in 320 CE, through expert renderings informed by architectural historians and “virtual archaeologists” like Dr. Bernard Frischer , professor emeritus at the University of Virginia .

Back in a 2012 Open Culture post , Matthias Rascher explained the significance of this year, “when Rome’s population had reached its peak (about one million) and the first Christian churches were being built.” Historians will also recognize 320 as following directly on the heels of the Donation of Constantine that gave the city to the Pope. We can tour the virtual streets of this rapidly changing ancient city, though the burgeoning population is nowhere in evidence. Nothing moves, grows, or changes in Rome Reborn. In that sense it is still like so many previous representations of antiquity.

Now in version 3.0, Rome Reborn began as a 3D model in 2007, and was first owned by the Regents of the University of California. It now operates, under the auspices of the University of Virginia, as a private company called Flyover Zone. They have other such digital recreations in their product line, including “Athens Reborn ® , Hadrian’s Villa Reborn ® , Baalbek Reborn ® , Egypt Reborn ® , and Historical Games ® .” Rome Reborn’s designer, Danila Loginov, has released increasingly detailed promos of the project over the years, and you can see these many videos here.

To fully experience this simulated Rome, you’ll need a Virtual Reality headset. The third version of the 3D model has been made publicly available. “You can immerse yourself in the ancient city and even enter into some of its most famous buildings while listening to the commentary of highly qualified experts,” the Rome Reborn site promises . Famous buildings one might explore include the Roman forum and the Basilica of Maxentius. It is not an experience based in realism. In some of the simulations “you can opt for a whirlwind   flyover tour  of the city,” notes Meilan Solly at Smithsonian .

This roughly two-hour tour is like nothing any ancient Roman ever experienced. “Comparatively, the two site visits place users in the driver’s seat,” Solly writes, “affording them freedom to roam through reconstructed streets and halls.” It’s not quite the stuff of a simulated universe just yet, but it may not be too far in the future before Rome Reborn® fully lives up to its name. Learn more about ancient Rome, circa 320 CE, in the videos here, and learn more about Rome Reborn at their official site .

While it looks great, I don’t believe it’s accurate. Rome was built on hills, not flat land.

the colosseum rome virtual tour

Roman Colosseum, Italy

First of all we would like to thank our colleague Henk Keijzer who kindly gave us a panorama with the beautiful view inside the Colosseum which has been added to our virtual tour . And now we are going to tell you about couple of historical facts...

The Colosseum is a monument with a great history. It probably wouldn't even have been built if not for the vanity of the Emperor Vespasian, Nero's successor. In his attempt to outshine the glory of the former ruler, in 70 AD Vespasian ordered to build a huge amphitheater, which could amaze everyone with its beauty and magnitude.

The Colosseum, Rome

His plan was a success: amphitheater turned out to be so gigantic that its original name after the Flavian dynasty didn't stick. Colosseus means huge, gigantic, and it was and remains the largest of its kind.

Like other Roman amphitheaters, the Colosseum in Rome is an ellipse with an arena in its center. The length of the outer ellipse is 524 meters, the length of the long axis is 188 meters, and the length of the minor axis is 156 meters. This is an absolute record. The world's second-largest amphitheater named after Mark Anthony Gordian located in Tunis has an ellipse of only 425 meters.

Roman Colosseum is even more impressive on the inside. The length of its arena is 86 meters, width is 54 meters, and walls height ranges from 48 to 50 meters. With size like this it can accommodate about 50,000 spectators (and the aforementioned Tunis landmark can accommodate only 30,000 people).

There was a statue on each arch between the middle and upper circles of the Colosseum; ceilings with colorful plaster and outside walls were decorated with bronze ornaments.

The Colosseum, Rome

The Roman Colosseum had 76 entrances for the general public and a few more for the emperor, the nobility, and gladiators. It was designed so that visitors could leave the Colosseum in five minutes.

While this colossus was built relatively quickly, in just 8 years, its creator, Vespasian, did not live to see the grand opening day. The new amphitheater welcomed its first audience under the rule of the Roman Emperor Titus, Vespasian's successor. The celebration of this event, which lasted 100 days straight, involved 2000 gladiators and 5000 wild animals.

Furthermore, technology of that time allowed filling the arena with water several meters in depth. Water was pumped through the system of water channels built under the arena. And in this improvised lake, in addition to gladiator fights and other on-land events, there were also galley water battles.

The Colosseum, Rome

Along with the historic center of Rome, the Colosseum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2007 it also earned the place in the list of the New Wonders of the World, beating dozens of prominent world landmarks, such as Hagia Sophia in Turkey or Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany.

However, today the Colosseum in Rome is not a magnificent amphitheater, but rather an example of strict minimalism. During two centuries of its existence it survived the invasion of barbarians and fires, each time losing a piece of its appearance. But it was damaged not only by the environment or enemies. During Middle Ages the Colosseum was considered a stock of free construction materials, and it was a common practice to take stones from the walls of the Colosseum for different needs of the city.

The Colosseum, Rome

Nowadays, not only exhaust gas, vibration from heavy city traffic, and constant flow of tourists, but also weather in Rome causes damage to the Colosseum: wind and frost were the last straw. The ancient amphitheater has about three thousand cracks, and it constantly losing some of its pieces.

So it's time to look at this dying giant, which appears on every travel pictures of Rome, and to think about the transience of time ...

Exquisite photography as always airpano! But as for the site itself - I was watching it with mixed feelings and I am not sure it is worthy of such admiration. Thinking about the thousands of people (and animals) losing their lives there just to amuse blood-thirsty emperors and crowds...Maybe it is not such a loss for it to disintigrate into oblivion. It is places of peace, spirituality at its best and symbols of human kindness and beauty that I would rather admire.

Frequently asked questions regarding guided tours of the Colosseum:

Is a colosseum tour worth it.

Visiting the Colosseum on your own is a fine, enjoyable experience, but if you want to get the most out of it and learn more about the history of the Colosseum (and the Roman Forum, and the Palatine Hill!) a guided tour is the way to go. An expert guide can give you insights into the building and its surroundings you simply wouldn’t get on your own.

What languages are tours given in?

Most tours are in English, with some offered in additional languages such as German, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish.

Are Colosseum tours child-friendly?

Some tours are especially designed for kids, while others are designed for the general public. Either way, the Colosseum is quite awe-inspiring so it’s not difficult to keep kids entertained while you explore it. Do keep in mind that most tours are non-stop affairs, so your kids may get tired on the longer ones.

Do I get to skip the lines on a guided tour?

Yes, you do. Like all visitors, tour groups must go through security, but you will avoid all other queues. For more information on visiting the Colosseum, check out our Visit page.

How long are guided tours of the Colosseum?

Most range from an hour and a half to three hours, depending on what sites you’ll be visiting on the tour, whether only the Colosseum or the nearby Palatine Hill and Roman Forum.

Do I need to book my tour in advance?

It’s not absolutely necessary that you book in advance, but if you plan to wing it when you arrive in Rome you may find that tour groups on your preferred dates and times are already full. Booking your tour in advance affords you more options when choosing the date and time so there’s no reason not to do so.

Is there anything I need to bring for my tour?

Proof of your reservation (on your phone will do) and comfortable clothes and footwear for walking. If you’re visiting Rome in the summer you should also bring water and sunscreen because the Mediterranean sun can be quite intense.
