Railbike excursions

a man and woman on a railbike on tracks

What’s the fuss about?

This concept has existed roughly since the 1850s, when maintenance workers on railroads used handcars and railbikes to get from point A to point B.  Something had to be used to carry the crew and materials for track inspections and/or repairs. In 1877, a Michigan farmer named George Sheffield was accredited for inventing the first three-wheeled railroad velocipede — a handcar that used a combination of hand and foot power to propel forward (“push-pull fashion”).

With many variations of this today, railbikes are primarily used for pleasure. The construction of each railbike may differ — some are 2-seaters, others 4 — and can come with electric assist. Essentially, the railbike may offer you a different perspective of the railroad — in essence you become the train. You chug along at a speed that is comfortable for you, while taking in the beautiful scenery along your chosen destination. It’s a great opportunity to relax, try something different, and take some spectacular photos.

Reserving your spot

With several groups of people out on a railroad at any given time, it’s not meant to be a race. The idea is to enjoy your time out on the tracks. Tailgating is not preferred. Each operation will have its own set of rules that you must follow. So don’t just plan on showing up the day of without a reservation and in flip flops — it’s not going to happen.

It’s like riding a bike

These “hands free,” people-powered rail vehicles are gaining momentum all over the United States on a variety of railroads, so here’s a guide to help you find one near you.

two people on railbike looking at each other

Note: Cancellations may occur if weather conditions are dangerous. Riders may be turned away if rules are not observed. Weight/height/age restrictions may be present. If children are allowed to ride, but cannot reach the pedals, a car seat or baby sling may be advised.

Take a Tracks and Yaks Ride in Maryland! ★★★★★

Great fun. We took the Queen City Combo, using the pedal cars downhill and the scenic railroad back to Frostburg. We might go do it again sometime.

This was a beautiful ride! Coasted downhill for 10 miles. Absolutely beautiful scenery. Such a nice way to see the surroundings. The ride stops at one point, and a staff member gives a brief history of the town below. Was very interesting.

I would highly recommend this trip! Easy and fun for all ages. Staff was friendly and answered all questions. We took the train back after the 15 mile downhill pedal through the scenic valley. Train ride was nice also! Snacks were available for purchase too which was an added bonus.

Came here with a friend and was not disappointed. They were very well organized and it was a beautiful (mostly) downhill scenic ride. 15 miles seemed long, but it goes by quickly and I didn't tire out on the few times pedaling was necessary. Took the steam engine back up and explored the town a little. Cute. May bring the kids back and do it in the fall.

We contacted Tracks and Yaks and purchased our Maryland Scenic Railroad ticket and rented bicycles for the ride from Frostburg back to Cumberland. I wanted to do this for quite sometime, and I’m so glad we did it. It was such a great ride on the train, and an easy ride back down to Cumberland. It was a wonderful day.

Finger Lakes Rail Riders

Ride through Finger Lakes wine country in Upstate New York with the Finger Lakes Rail Riders, which offers historical rail bike tours. Provided photo | Finger Lakes Rail Riders Provided photo | Finger Lakes Rail Riders

An Upstate New York rail bike company is offering a workout with a historical twist on its rail bike rides—the only one of its kind in the U.S.

Finger Lakes Rail Riders in Penn Yan claims to be the only rail bike company in America which provides a historical narration of the area as you pedal through some of the most beautiful landscapes in Upstate New York’s wine country .

They were also awarded a Tripadvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Award earlier this year, according to an announcement on their Facebook page .

At FLRR, riders will travel in pairs, with a solo seat option to ride with the guide, along a mostly flat five-mile path . The two-hour excursion includes a 25- to 30-minute narration of Yates County history, delivered with a humorous touch by your guide through a two-way radio on each bike.

Think Disney’s “Jungle Cruise,” but Upstate New York style.

Over the course of your journey, you will see working farms, relics from the railroad that was once there, and a one-room Mennonite schoolhouse. Participants are encouraged to ask questions along the way.

Adirondack RailBike Adventures

See rail bike companies across Upstate NY

Rail bikes are a unique way to see the state's beautiful landscapes.

“People can come and ride on existing railroads that have been here since 1851,” founder and owner Kathy Ferron told RochesterFirst. “They can get a little exercise, they can see some beautiful scenery — Yates County is an absolutely spectacular place to see.”

While in the area, visit some of the finest Penn Yan has to offer in the Finger Lakes , including paddling on beautiful Keuka Lake , delicious breakfast from the Penn Yan Diner , and not one, but two award-winning ice cream spots, The Spotted Duck and Seneca Farms .

FLRR rides run Sunday through Tuesday and Friday through Saturday from now until October 29. The cost per two-seater bike is $88 and there is no age limit to how young or how old a rider has to be.

One person can pedal for two, as long as their fitness level allows it.

FLRR answers more questions about their rides on their website FAQ page .

Rail bike options have grown over the years, giving some abandoned railroad tracks new life by allowing passengers to travel down them on two or four person machines. There are several companies across Upstate New York which offer different kinds of excursions and experiences. Some even offer pet-friendly rail bike tours.

A Highly Recommended Experience! ★★★★★

We had a terrific experience at Adirondack Rail Bike Adventures. The bikes were thoroughly sanitized between uses which made us feel safe. The employees were friendly and helpful from check-in until our ride was complete. The 6 mile ride was just the right length for our family, it was just over 1.5 hours. There is a break at the halfway mark to stretch your legs while they turn the bike around for you to return to the departure station. I have no hesitation recommending Adirondack Rail Bike!

Very nice ride. I took the family up and it was a fun two hours. Sometimes we rode hard and sometimes we relaxed. The Adirondack mountains in the backdrop is cool. We’re already planning for a return trip.

Wasn’t sure what to expect when we booked the trip. Had a great time and enjoyed every second. Definitely got a bit of a workout. Staff was great, very pleasant and engaging even when we showed up an hour early. Fantastic experience will definitely recommend to friends and family. Hope this stays around for a long time!

If you've spent more than 5 seconds looking at the ADK rail bikes thinking "looks neat..." DO IT! It IS neat. Beautiful, interesting, and fun! Gets the blood pumping without being overly exertive. 10/10 will do again.

The ease of use, the ability to get out into parts of the DAKs that can only be seen from the railroad right of way. It's quiet and the beauty of the region is really spectacular.

We rode from Thendara to Carter station in just the 3rd week of operation. We had 9 people in our party ranging in age from 19 mos to 71 yrs. Every single one of us had a blast. The gorgeous views and a unique way of seeing them are unmatched. The staff were friendly and went above and beyond to make sure we had a terrific time. We will be coming back for sure. Thank you for bringing this experience closer to home!

History of the Line

Our track was constructed in 1887 by the Southern Pacific Railroad, and was a part of the main line running between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Over the years millions of riders have experienced the beauty of the Santa Clara River Valley, Hollywood has used this span of rail as a scenic backdrop, and generations have fallen in love with trains.

The track was used extensively by Southern Pacific as late as the 1950s to haul citrus from packing houses at the communities along the Santa Clara River.

Today the Sunburst brings back the romance to this storied line, and takes us into a new millennium with the introduction of our unique Railbikes.

Rail bike tours are the soft adventure trend for anyone who loves the nostalgia of train travel

Riding the rails isn't just for wayward vagabonds. these rail bike tours are an exciting way to see the world..

Rail Explorers rail bikes lined up on a train track with the sunrise in the background.

“Do you even rail bike, bro?” You’ll probably be asked this question dozens of times this summer by anyone from your most extreme adrenalin-addicted friends to your grandmother’s sweet old knitting buddies. That’s because the newest bucket-list adventure activity on Earth is beloved by adventure seekers of all ages.

Rail Explorers USA

Flekkefjordbanen, revolution rail co., pudding creek railbikes.

Put simply, rail bike tours involve riding pedal-powered (and sometimes even electric) machines along abandoned or disused railroad tracks that no longer carry train traffic. Rail bike tours are relatively new over the last few years, and they’re expanding all over the world, making use of defunct rail lines that traverse scenic natural areas . Here’s a closer look at the best rail bike tour operators and where to find them.

Multiple U.S. Locations

Rail Explorers rail bikes lined up on a train track with the sunrise in the background.

This company provides rail bike tours in four U.S. locations, including the Catskill Mountains , Rhode Island, and Boone, Iowa. With scenic views throughout the relaxed excursion, these trips are perfect for those looking to get off the beaten path and check out each region in a new and exciting way.

The eight-mile roundtrip Catskills tour travels for about 2.5 hours along the historic Ulster and Delaware Railroads, alongside Esopus Creek through the woods. Bring a snack and a drink for lunch at the creekside turnaround.

The Rhode Island trip offers a variety of regular and themed tours, including the most popular: “The Northern Ramble” and “The Southern Circuit.” The Ramble takes guests on a six-mile jaunt from Portsmouth to the Sakonnet River. It’s a one-way trip with a return via shuttle bus — perfect for anyone looking for a more leisurely rail ride. The Circuit trip is six miles roundtrip and allows guests to eat lunch at a private waterfront picnic area.

At every location, Rail Explorers USA offers two types of “Explorer” vehicles: a tandem for two people or a quad for up to four people. Both are safe, well-designed, and easy to use.

Flekkefjord, Norway

Who says southern Norway doesn’t have some of the best rail biking on Earth? Well … no one, really. But if you’re in the Flekkefjord area and looking for stunning nature scenes, architectural wonders, and some leg-pumping, self-propelled, train-inspired action, the rail-biking tour at Flekkefjordbanen is not to be missed.

This railway line operated for most of the 20th century, connecting Flekkefjord to Sørlandsbanen. Though the last journey made by the Flekkefjordbanen train was in 1990, visitors and locals alike can once again tour this magical area by rail — by rail bike .

Local Norwegians are intent on preserving the railroad and turning it into a living museum. Example A: The slogan, which goes “cultural salvation through active use.” Rail biking is the perfect way to put that slogan into action. An activity suitable for old and young alike, the track takes you through a beautiful natural landscape and no less than 17 tunnels. There are tours every day in the summer.

revolution rail co 1 rail bike

The Adirondacks-based Revolution Rail Co. started with its initial rail bike tour leading riders on a six-mile adventure through the forest along the Hudson River in New York. One of the highlights of this fairly flat-terrain ride is crossing a trestle bridge over the Hudson (think Stand By Me sans train). At the turnaround point, riders can refuel with a snack and a drink while the bikes are readied for the return trip.

This trip will truly be a unique exploration for most, considering this section of the Adirondacks has never seen passenger traffic before. Tours run throughout each day, and there is no minimum age requirement, meaning even baby Timmy can be a part of the fun. The company has since expanded beyond this one tour to multiple rail biking locations in New Jersey, Colorado, and even coastal Maine.

Fort Bragg, California

The East Coast may have popularized rail bike tours, but “The Other Coast” is picking up on the trend. Beginning in Fort Bragg, Pudding Creek Railbikes takes riders on a tour of California’s beautiful Mendocino County, over wooden trestle bridges and past the ancient redwood trees of the state’s famous Redwood Route. It’s an area rich in wildlife, so nature lovers can keep an eye out for osprey, blue herons, deer, turtles, and even the occasional bear.

What truly sets this rail bike tour apart, however, is that each bike is electric , which makes this the laziest — er, most leisurely — rail bike tour in the country. Just hop on and go, so you can focus on the important things, like taking pictures of birds and your kids. Plus, for an extra $30, dog owners can even take their pup along for the ride in a purpose-built rail bike “caboose.” Free bandana and doggo treat included!

Portable grill? Check. Properly packed cooler with lots of ice? Check. Bacon, burgers, and beer? Check, check, and double-check. Building a good tailgating loadout isn't hard. But that's why it's worth it to go the extra mile and pack the things that'll really level-up the experience for your friends and family. We're talking portable fridges, go-anywhere smokers, and even a good, beefy portable power station.

No one leaves the house these days without at least their phone and, if they're heading out to do something especially interesting, probably a tablet and a GoPro, too. All these gadgets demand serious power, so why not be the savior and make sure everyone in your tailgating squad has access to lots and lots of portable power? That's exactly what you'll get with any one of these best-selling portable power stations. EcoFlow River 2 Pro

Renault's Alpine racing and sports car division and the Lapierre mountain bike company collaborated to create the 2024 Overvolt GLP III SE Alpine Edition, an aggressive, enduro-style electric mountain bike. The two French companies based the eMTB's color scheme on the Alpine A290 5-seater all-electric urban sportscar. Why the GLP III SE matters Lapierre Overvolt GLP III SE electric eMTB Alpine / Alpine

The GLP III SE isn't the first Alpine and Lapierre collaboration. Earlier this year, the two companies released the Aircode DRS SE, a limited-edition road bike that, like the GLP III SE, represents their shared vision of aggressive design that energizes riders to "Re-engage with the delights of cycling." Lapierre and Alpine have worked together since 2022 to share their mutual vision of design and high performance and to promote the French industry.

No RV brand is more iconic and recognizable than Airstream. The classic "aluminum tube" shell has hardly changed in nearly a century. But the company continues to innovate on its already stunning interiors and the tech that undergirds its drool-worthy travel trailers. Case in point: The 2025 Trade Wind 23FB. Get the low-down on the 2025 Airstream Trade Wind 23FB

The new-for-2025 23FB is the second addition to Airstream's wildly popular Trade Wind line-up. The line debuted back in 2023 with the sole Trade Wind 25FB model, and it was purpose-built for maximum off-grid camping. The 23FB continues in that same vein. It's every bit as versatile, usable, and livable as its predecessor. But by reimagining the interior and shrinking down the overall footprint, it's lighter, slimmer, more compact, and easier to tow, making it especially attractive for campers looking to venture farther off-pavement than typically possible in Airstream's bulkier, full-sized travel trailers.

The Cart Ride offers captain’s chairs that swivel and have armrests. A great option for those with limited mobility, or for groups that want to be able to hold conversations during the trip.

The Choo-Choo

The Choo-Choo Speeder Ride is our compact gas-powered speeder and offers a true “railroad” experience for riders with its locomotive-like appearance.

The Destination

Don’t forget to have your camera ready for the 5-mile trip to the Historic Valley River Tunnel . Take in the views from our beautiful valley that offers you the opportunity to experience mountains, forests, and abundant wildlife. You’ll see crystal-clear mountain rivers and streams as you cross Historic open deck railroad bridges on your trip to the tunnel.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the cost, can i bring my pet, are children allowed to ride, is there a weight limit, can we take food or drinks on the ride, how should i dress.

Please remember you will be outside, in nature. At the tunnel, you will have the option to walk down to the river, and there is a slight slope. You may encounter spiders, bees, and other insects during your tour.

Dress for the weather and temperature. Please do not wear skirts or flowy pants that could get caught in the pedals of the RailBike. To avoid losing your shoes, no flip-flops or sandals without a heel strap should be worn. Closed-toe shoes are best.

What if my party has an odd number of riders?

Groups with an odd number of riders may find that they will need to be split into more than one RailBike to even out ridership numbers. Please call if this is the case with your group, to discuss options. (828) 557-4021

RailBike rider parties that are larger than 4 will be seated on consecutive RailBikes.

If your party is less than 4 people, and you do not want to ride with strangers, you can purchase the additional seat(s) when you make your reservation. We cannot guarantee the additional seat(s) will be available to purchase later.

Are there restrooms?

What happens if the weather looks questionable.

Tours go out rain or shine. If the weather looks like thunderstorms or lightning then we will cancel your tour. If Andrews Valley Rail Tours cancels your tour, you will be offered to book another day in the future or you will be issued a full refund (your choice).

If you choose not to participate in the tour, due to weather conditions, and the tour you were scheduled for runs as scheduled, you will not receive a refund.

What is your cancellation policy?

You can cancel up to 72 hours prior to departure. Within the 72 hours of departure, this reservation becomes nonrefundable. NO EXCEPTIONS. Should there be inclement weather, such as lightning, heavy rain or storms, you will be able to re-book for another day, or you will be fully refunded.

You will receive a phone call or text message if your tour is cancelled due to weather. If you do not receive a call or message your tour will depart as scheduled.

It is very important that you be on time for your tour. As is stated during your ticketing process, YOU MUST BE AT THE DEPOT 30 MINUTES BEFORE YOUR SCHEDULED DEPARTURE TIME for mandatory safety instructions. You will not receive a refund if you arrive late.
