The Marley Brothers @ Deer Lake Park - Sep 5 2024

On a warm September evening, Deer Lake Park in Burnaby was transformed into a reggae haven as The Marley Brothers—Ziggy, Stephen, Damian, Julian, and Ky-Mani—took the stage for a much-anticipated performance. The night was an unforgettable homage to their father, Bob Marley, with all five brothers gracing the stage simultaneously, exchanging lines in a seamless rotation. This unique dynamic gave the performance a communal, family feel, as the brothers infused each song with their individual energy while remaining true to their father’s legacy.

The show kicked off with “Rebel Music (3 O’Clock Roadblock),” and the synergy between the brothers was immediately apparent. The way they passed vocal duties between one another added a fresh and dynamic layer to each song, keeping the audience on their toes. By the time “Get Up, Stand Up” and “I Shot the Sheriff” echoed through the crowd, it was clear that this concert was more than just a tribute—it was a celebration of unity, resistance, and the unbreakable bond of family.

The collective energy peaked with classics like “Three Little Birds” and “Buffalo Soldier,” which had the entire park swaying and singing along.

The set flowed effortlessly, with deeper cuts like “Road Block” and “Roots, Rock, Reggae” giving long-time fans a treat, while the more popular hits kept the atmosphere vibrant. “Exodus” was a powerful prelude to the encore, with its rhythmic, spiritual build-up creating a near-transcendent moment.

For the encore, the brothers returned with “Could You Be Loved” and “One Love,” sending the crowd into a final wave of euphoria. These tracks, filled with hope and togetherness, encapsulated the evening perfectly. The sense of unity extended beyond the stage, with the audience feeling not just entertained but deeply connected to the Marley legacy.

The sound quality at Deer Lake Park was impressive, with each brother’s voice distinctly audible, allowing for moments where they could truly shine both individually and as a collective. The outdoor venue provided the perfect backdrop for such a soulful performance, with the natural surroundings complementing the earthy, spiritual energy of the music.

Overall, The Marley Brothers delivered a show that was more than just a concert—it was an experience that celebrated their father’s legacy while also showcasing their unique musical identities. Each song felt like a shared journey, with the brothers guiding the audience through messages of love, peace, and resistance. It was a night to remember, where family and music came together in perfect harmony.

Stephen and Damian Marley’s Brotherly Love

By Reshma B

On a warm evening last month, inside a cluster of nondescript office spaces south of Miami, a rehearsal studio with a giant lion’s head painted in red, green, and gold on the concrete-block wall hums with activity. Long after the businesses surrounding them have shut down for the day, Stephen “Ragga” Marley and Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley are putting their band through its paces, tuning up for the Traffic Jam tour, which will be crisscrossing the U.S. and Canada through Mar. 30.

“Practice make perfect,” Damian, 45, says during a break in the session. “You want to get the show as tight as possible. You really want the thing to be like muscle memory so people are not thinking and it just becomes natural.”

The brothers’ determination to maintain the family legacy of musical excellence has not eased one bit over the years that they’ve accumulated 11 Grammy Awards between them as performers and producers. Over the years, Stephen has remixed their father’s classics and produced the likes of Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu. Meanwhile, Damian is one of the few artists to collaborate with both Nas and Jay-Z, along with more recent hip-hop collabs including a remix of Killer Mike’s “ Run .” While both are veterans at this point, they work harder than most rookies.

Stephen and Damian have been sharing stages for more than a decade now, but Traffic Jam is their first co-headlining tour, a chance to work through their deep catalog of collabs, from the ganja love song  “Medication” to “The Mission,” a rugged statement of purpose affirming their commitment to spread the message of righteousness and Rastafari to the world.

They’ve been sharpening their craft in this rehearsal space since the early 2000s. If these walls could talk, they’d tell stories from the creation of Damian’s classic 2005 album Welcome to Jamrock , which was largely produced by Stephen. “I would be in the recording studio and it get a little monotonous,” Jr. Gong recalls, “so I’d come here with the band and start vibing lyrics live and take those ideas back to the studio.”

Stephen says he learned patience from Damian, while Damian credits Stephen for teaching him about everything from their father and their faith to how to sing on key and count bars. “So much things, too much to count.”

Now, after so many years of collaboration, they’re excited for the possibilities of their first official tour together as co-headliners.

“Myself and Damian get to do this catalog of music that we have together,” says Stephen with a twinkle in his eye. “We usually do it in pieces — me come pon him show, him come pon my show and do two songs. Now we’re doing a full set of the music that we have through the years. Trust me, the vibes is high.”

“We do this a whole heap of times before, but not billed,” says Jr. Gong. “When his album came out I went on the road with him, just rode the bus and showed up… So Steve and I tour all the while, but this is the first official billing.”

“It was a hard time, still a hard time, “ Stephen says. “But still the music help carry me through and ting. Take time, find your footing, and keep moving same way.”

While Damian hopes the tour will allow for some healing, Ragga describes it as “a necessity — let me just say that. It was necessary for me go out there and do the music. Damian and Joseph was close too. So even this tour here, it necessary in more ways than one. People might not understand that part of it. But it’s necessary.”

Damian and Stephen Marley at History

stephen marley tour review

Damian and Stephen Marley brought Toronto to a halt at History Monday night. Stirring up a commotion on the final leg of the Traffic Jam Tour. A thick layer of smoke clouded the venue with the band silhouetted on stage as the voice of Big Youth resonated in our ears. Flashing lightning and clashing thunder vibrated the earth beneath our feet. As the storm lifted, Damian and Stephen took to the stage.

Reggae fans were treated to a Marley family celebration with Damian and Stephen trading songs all night while mixing in a heavy dose of their father’s songs too. Pimpa’s Paradise, Road To Zion and of course Welcome to Jamrock highlighted Damian’s set. Stephen’s smooth style serenading Cast The First Stone, Tight Ship and a solid version of Rockstone. To the delight of the crowd the Marley brothers smashed their duets Medication and Traffic Jam.

Bob’s catalogue was on full display as well. Classic reggae hits like Exodus, Jamming and Is This Love. Roots rockers like Punky Reggae Party and So Much Trouble were also performed. The crowd was sent home with a wonderful encore of Could You Be Loved. You could fell the heat all night long. A welcome warm summer breeze on a cold winter night.

The Marley family band together to go on ‘The Legacy Tour’ across the country

Families are like branches on a tree. We grow in different directions but our roots remain as one, well not all families. We got that from a hallmark card but it’s true and the Marleys are one family trying to honor their famous father, Bob. Ziggy, Damian, Stephen, Julian, and Ky-Mani are banding together on tour. They told Deco all about it. Well, only Ziggy and Julian.

Bob Marley spawned a legion of talented children.

All grown up and ready to ‘Buffalo Soldier’ on his music are five of the Marley brothers.

“The Legacy Tour” is jamming all over North America with 22 shows and the name says it all.

Julian Marley: “The family getting together to highlight this music which has been going around the world for all of these decades, serving the people and uplifting the people. It’s definitely something very powerful and it’s really a legacy tour.”

Ziggy Marley: “We all take turns in certain songs and everybody sings a certain song by themselves and we’ll come back and sing together again. We just follow the setlist according to Stephen, who’s really the producer of the show and kind of the organizer and the band leader.”

Stephen is the band leader got it? Let’s play ‘Which Marley?’

Who’s the friendliest Marley?

Ziggy Marley: “Rohan.”

You don’t want to see which Marley is mad?

Julian Marley: “I would say none. Yeah, not one.”

Which Marley is always late?

Ziggy Marley: “Damian is always late man. The youngest one.”

As far as the music, it’s the greatest mix of Bob.

Julian Marley: “Yeah Bob’s music and we have a couple of our songs that we perform also you know, but yes, it’s all within our father’s music.”

Ziggy Marley: “If some fans request, we’ll sing some of our stuff too. So we have to give them what they want.”

The last stop is here in the 305. Oct. 5.

Julian Marley: “The roots of our family kind of from Jamaica to Miami and across the world. So sealing up it in Miami is a home deal, you know?”

Ziggy Marley: “Home court, home court.” laughs

The burning feeling at the concert is indescribable, same as watching Deco.

Julian Marley: “It’s definitely energy-packed. Full energy. Electrifying you know. I can’t really explain it too much, more like the colors behind you. The colors behind the Deco Drive theme, where it looks bright.”

Ziggy Marley: “A lot of dancing. A lot of dancing. People dancing. Everybody dancing.”

CONCERT REVIEW – DAMIAN AND STEPHEN MARLEY TOUR BRINGS GOOD VIBES AND GOOD MUSIC TO TORONTO

Kevin Bourne

The Damian and Stephen Marley tour, called the Traffic Jam Tour, stopped at History in Toronto for a night of good vibes and good music.

Tonight, Damian and Stephen Marley’s Traffic Jam Tour stopped at History in downtown Toronto in front of what appeared to be a sold out crowd. With the recent release of the the Bob Marley: One Love film, the crossover appeal of his message that touched people of all ethnicities all over the world, and Toronto’s large Jamaican community, a sell out was pretty much guaranteed.

With clouds of marijuana smoke dotting the crowd, the night started with international DJ and Flow 98.7 Reggae radio host, Spexdaboss , spinning some foundational tunes as he brought the crowd back to the roots of Reggae music.

It was a family affair as London, Ontario resident , Tuff Gong/Universal Music Canada artist , and grandson to Bob and Rita Marley, King Cruff , fresh off the release of his single “FALLBACK” , took his turn rocking the crowd. Cruff seldomly refers to his place in the first family of Reggae, but he clearly inherited the gene for live performance. The charismatic singer-songwriter, who may have to change his name because he was dressed like anything but a “cruff” on Monday night, was smiling cheek to cheek as he performed songs from his growing catalogue, including “SHEDOENEED” which has received steady radio play in Toronto.

Then came the main event as Damian and Stephen Marley took to the stage following a narrated video intro. The brothers were led on stage by a flag bearer waving the Rastafarian flag who may have been the hardest working performer of the night after waving the flag intensely the whole night without missing a beat.

damian and stephen marley tour

They opened with “10,000 Chariots” before taking their audience through their respective catalogues, including “It Was Written” ,  “Road To Zion” and of course “Welcome To Jamrock” , as well as some of their greatest collaborations, including “All Night” , “Tight Ship” , “Cast The First Stone” , “Jah Army” , and “Medication” after saluting Canada for legalizing their favourite plant.

They also sprinkled some of their father’s biggest hits throughout their set, including “ So Much Trouble In The World” , “Pimper’s Paradise” , “Funky Reggae Party” , “Jamming” , “Is This Love” and “Exodus” . People danced and put their hands in the air, while lovers put their arms around each other and swayed. With video of their father on the screen and his biopic fresh in our minds, it’s clear that his sons singing his songs isn’t just about preserving their father’s musical legacy, but about continuing his message.

The words “good vibes” are overused today, but Damian and Stephan Marley’s show was really all about that. For those of Caribbean heritage, it was an opportunity to remember the songs that played on the record player at home and were a soundtrack to our childhood. For others, it was a moment to simply release their cares and feel the vibes (with no fears of violence because everyone was there to have a good time). For music heads, it was an opportunity to enjoy live instrumentation at its finest. And as Toronto seemingly drifts further away from its Jamaican roots, it was a reminder of a Toronto that once was.

Damian and Stephen Marley put on an exceptional show that at times felt like a 90’s basement jam and at other times an extended family gathering. Stephen, with his singing style (which has an uncanny resemblance to his father’s), and Damian, with his DJ style with powerful flows, balance each other out and play well off each other. Together they reminded us what a live show should be about —no gimmicks, no bullshit, no backtrack vocals; just good music and a solid performance fueled by a love and respect for the audience.

The Traffic Jam Tour stops next in Montreal before moving on to Brooklyn, Detroit and Chicago.

Stephen Marley's 'Old Soul' – A Journey Through Time and Genre

  • September 15, 2023

Josh Loewen

Stephen Marley has hit the ground running with his fifth solo album, "Old Soul". The project marks a significant milestone, arriving as his first full-length project since 2016. Known affectionately as "Ragga" by close friends and family, Stephen has built a reputation as a studio perfectionist, yet simultaneously shines as an exceptional live performer, celebrated for his innate ability to infuse spontaneity into his sets. With "Old Soul," Stephen not only leans into these strengths but also reveals a side of the artist that has remained hidden until now. Released on September 15, 2o23, the album features special guests  Eric Clapton , Bob Weir , Jack Johnson , Ziggy Marley ,  Damian Jr. Gong Marley , Buju Banton and Slightly Stoopid .

The album kicks off with Don't You Believe  a track that's hard to forget as the lyrics echo on in your head for minutes after. "Don't you believe, everything they tell you", sings Marley, with sweet melodies and absolute groove. A rhythmic drum beat lures us in, accompanied by beautiful finger-style guitar. Setting the stage for the rest of the project, track 1 is already a work of pure beauty. Not to mention the message, which is pure wisdom. As the track comes to a close, we're thrust into the groovy strumming of  Cool As The Breeze . The second track holds firm to listeners' expectations for the album, if not exceeding them. A wholesome reggae ballad, Stephen has beautiful vocal harmonies backing up his vocals – driven by pure groove and a laid-back drum pattern. After an exciting round of the chorus, "When the wind blows…", we're onto track 3.

Cast The First Stone  opens up with a darker sound, with heavy hitting drums and darker guitar chords. The track features Damian Jr. Gong , with the two singing about hypocrisy. And could there really be a better addition to that theme than a flute? Expectations are being exceeded again with this one. Next up,  Thanks We Get (Do Fi Dem).  This one features Buju Banton , and starts in full throttle. Fuelled by groovy strums and powerful backing vocals, listeners will be severely pleased with the combination of guitar and melodies. And when Buju Banton's gets into his verse, queue more groove!! The wild melodies continue as we head into the beautiful Don't Let Me Down , focusing on the power of vocal harmonies. Holding a continuous strumming pattern with subtle drumming in the background allows listeners to really soak in the lyrics and vocals, which no-one is complaining about. So far each track has its own complimenting features, ranging from drums to vocals. Which we see in the next song, as we kick off with piano and a trumpet. The slower pace of the track sets the scene for  Let The Children Play , a slower-paced track, driven by hard-hitting drums and yet some more finger-style picking. As Stephen chants, "Love must find away", bass and piano team up to play us into the title track.

Old Soul  is a retrospective take on Stephen's childhood, and the namesake of the album. "I'm an old soul… Inside me legacy lives on" is the best way to describe the track, as Stephen dives into his backstory – a genuine way to connect with fans. And with that aside, Stephen finds a way to connect with Ziggy Marley on track 9 –  There's A Reward . Stephen dives into perseverance with lyrics like "I shall not give up so easily, no no, there's a reward for me" – providing positive message for his fanbase as we dive into  This Time – a track driven by shakers and various percussion instruments. The trumpet is back on this one too, adding a very special effect to Stephen's melodies of choice. The trumpet sticks around for the next track as well,  These Foolish Things , as Stephen continues to bring the groove with another ballad – "These silly things reminds me of you", he sings. Speaking of ballads, the next track is reminiscent of an old western flick – fitting, as it's titled  I Shot The Sheriff . Featuring Eric Clapton,  the track is a a reggae/country hybrid, with vibes like a western duel.  Standing In Love  is next, filled with various background sounds and vocals. Lyrics about true love really bring out another side of Stephen, and set the mood for the final track. Winding Roads features Jack Johnson and Bob Weir , and is already at work winding down the album. With a creative vocal mix, Stephen, Bob, and Jack have a fun time on this one – wondering "How long must we try these winding roads?" The instrumental has the mood of an ending song, and as the project comes to a close, listeners come to the sad realization that this is, in fact, the end.

Stephen Marley did an incredible job of executing his 5th album, and the excitement is warranted. We're looking forward to what he has in store next, and hope you are too.

Stephen Marley Review by Justine Willard

Stephen Marley 2019 Babylon By Bus Tour at The Fillmore September 5 2019 by Justine Willard

Stephen “Ragga” Marley brought his summer 2019 Babylon By Bus Tour to the Fillmore in San Francisco, CA on September 5, 2019. Stephen is an eight-time Grammy-winning reggae artist. He is also the second eldest son of reggae legend Bob Marley. To keep things in the family his son, Jo Mersa Marley also joined him on tour as one of his opening acts.

Stephen Marley has been amazing audiences since his debut album premiered at #1 on the Billboard Reggae album charts all the way back in 2007. ( Tuff Gong/Ghetto Youths/Universal Republic) That albums garnered a Grammy award for Marley, and the acoustic version of the album also got a Grammy in 2010. Since then Marley has been amazing audiences all over the globe.

stephen marley tour review

Stephen Marley began the night strong with the song “Natural Mystic” which is well known to his audience as a classic by his legendary father. Throughout the night he kept asking the crowd if they were familiar with reggae music? There was also an overpowering smell of weed present in the concert hall which probably took days to air out. Everyone was feeling irie.

“Ragga” performed songs from all four of his albums. His latest Revelation Pt. 2 – The Fruit of Life came out in 2016. The concert-goers were utterly enjoying the vibe of the music. They were dancing and singing along to the Jamaican infused songs the whole night.

Like all great nights, they have to come to an end. Luckily “Ragga” ended his show with the crowd favorite song “40 Days And 40 Nights.”

More about Stephen Marley (from his Facebook page.)

The second son of Bob and Rita Marley, Stephen was born on April 20, 1972; he began his career as a precocious six-year old singing, dancing and playing percussion with his siblings in the group The Melody Makers whose first single “Children Playing In The Streets” was produced by their father in 1979 and released on Tuff Gong, the label founded by Bob in the late 60s.

Just like his older brother Ziggy, Stephen acquired his initial studio skills by watching his father. While still a teenager he assisted in the production of The Melody Makers’ albums including their three Best Reggae Album Grammy winners “Conscious Party” (Virgin Records, 1989) “One Bright Day” (Virgin Records, 1990) and “Fallen Is Babylon” (Elektra Entertainment, 1998). In 1993 Ziggy and Stephen founded Ghetto Youths International as a means of controlling their own music and helping upcoming artists. Stephen’s earliest solo production efforts for Ghetto Youths International includes his late grandmother’s (Cedella Booker) album “My Altar”, followed in 1995 by the Ziggy Marley and The Melody Makers single “Works To Do” and younger brother Damian’s “10,000 Chariots”. Both singles hit the Jamaican charts and generated much excitement surrounding Stephen’s burgeoning production expertise.

In 1996 Damian released his debut album “Mr. Marley”, on the Ghetto Youths imprint, with distribution in the U.S. by Tuff Gong/Lightyear. Stephen played several instruments and wrote most of the songs in addition to producing “Mr. Marley”. He also taught his younger brother how to ride a “riddim” and has been an invaluable mentor in Damian’s dramatic transformation from an inexperienced teenaged hopeful into a confident global adult hit-making artist.

The first project that brought Stephen’s production capabilities widespread attention was “Chant Down Babylon”, where he audaciously manipulated his father’s original vocal outtakes from the 1970s Island Records’ sessions, splicing them into duets with hip-hop and R&B artists, while updating the Wailers’ richly textured one-drop rhythms with an assortment of samples, loops and overdubs. The results ranged from the late Guru’s heartfelt take on “Johnny Was” to Busta Rhymes’ street version of the reverential “Rasta Man Chant” to Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry’s hard rocking raucousness on “Roots Rock Reggae”. “Chant Down Babylon” achieved its objective of bringing Bob’s music to a new generation of fans, earned a Grammy nomination, was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America and has sold more than one million copies worldwide.

Stephen’s hip-hop infused dancehall beats were far more fluid and complex on Damian’s 2001 album “Half Way Tree” (Ghetto Youths/Motown) with spectacular growth displayed by both the producer and the artist. Stephen demonstrated equal dexterity in creating rugged roots reggae rhythms, which supported the well-crafted, substantial lyrics and the seamlessness of Damian’s vocal flow. “Half Way Tree” yielded several hits in Jamaica, and internationally, including “More Justice” and “It Was Written” (featuring Capleton) and won the 2002 Grammy for Best Reggae album.

Stephen produced and contributed vocals to Damian’s single “Welcome To Jamrock”, the biggest reggae song of 2005. Anchored in a blistering bassline courtesy of Robbie Shakespeare, sampled from a 1985 hit by Ini Kamoze, “World A Reggae Music”, “Welcome To Jamrock’s” haunting, gritty portrayal of Jamaica became an anthem throughout the island and on urban radio all over America. Stephen was nearly finished with “Mind Control” at the time of “Jamrock’s” release but to maximize the momentum of the hit single within the international marketplace, the completion of Damian’s third album now took precedence on his production schedule. Released in September 2005, “Welcome To Jamrock” (Tuff Gong/Ghetto Youths/Universal Republic) entered the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart at No. 7, a record setting opening week for a reggae artist; it was certified Gold and won the 2006 Reggae Album Grammy while the single was honored for the Best Alternative Hip Hop performance, another first for a Jamaican artist. Meanwhile, the success of “Welcome To Jamrock” increased the anticipation surrounding the release of Stephen’s solo effort and when “Mind Control” finally arrived, it merited more attention than any Marley family member’s album in recent memory.

Recorded at the Marley Music studio in Kingston and the Marley’s Lions Den studio in Miami “Mind Control’s” organic blend of eclectic elements defied categorization, surprising many listeners who exclusively associate the Marley name with reggae. “Mind Control is an enlightening album, it is an uplifting album for your thought and for your spirit,” said Stephen, reflecting on his debut. “To me it is a balanced record because you have some social messages in there, some spiritual messages and some personal messages so there is something there for everyone.”

stephen marley tour review

In early 2010 Stephen contributed vocals to two tracks on Damian Marley and Nas’s lauded album “Distant Relatives” (Ghetto Youths/Universal Republic/Island Def Jam), the hard hitting “Leaders” and the devotional “In His Own Words” and produced a third track, “Patience”. Damian primarily steered the album’s production but Stephen played what both Marleys describe as a “big brother role”. “Well, that means I am the teacher but Damian is his own man, so basically if I hear something, that don’t sound too right, I would say that have to change,” Stephen offered regarding his involvement with “Relatives”. “It was just being his bigger brother and guiding him same way.”

While Stephen has built a formidable reputation handily navigating between genres, his second (as of yet untitled) album, due for release in 2011, marks a return to roots reggae, because “that is just the way the songs came out of me,” he explained. “Having to tour and having been out there for the past three years, I have been writing a lot of new material and to me and to the people around me, this album is very strong, with some very strong political songs. I wasn’t as excited about “Mind Control” as I am about this album,” Stephen enthused. “We didn’t plan it, it just came together naturally and sometimes things just work out better that way.”

Stephen Marley Unveils Captivating “Old Soul” Video and Announces Babylon By Bus Summer Tour 2023

Stephen Marley Unveils Captivating “Old Soul” Video and Announces Babylon By Bus Summer Tour 2023

This week, Stephen Marley premiered the video for his highly anticipated new single “Old Soul.” The retrospective video reveals never-before-seen old family photos, vintage vinyl album covers, and a collage of Jamaican music history, and it is available now on all streaming platforms and Stephen Marley’s Official YouTube Channel via Tuff Gong Collective/UMe/Ghetto Youths International.

The award-winning singer, songwriter, and producer chronicles his growth and innocence as a youth Marley kid, the second son of Bob Marley, and his personal rites of passage through the family legacy. The warm acoustic track takes the listener on a coming-of-age journey through allusions to personal legends and eras of musical influences that “made it all possible.”

“We come to free the people’s minds,” says Marley, a multi-Grammy-winning singer, songwriter, and producer. “Only way you can free your soul is to free your mind. My father said, ‘No chains on my feet, but I’m not free,’ and then he come to say, ‘Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery.’ Anywhere the music calls us, we are going to be there to spread the message of love and unity.”

Summer 2023 also marks the return of Stephen’s “Babylon By Bus Summer Tour,” which includes a cavalcade of hand-picked support artists appearing at various venues across the country, including Fortunate Youth, Skip Marley, Jesse Royal, Hirie, Arise Roots and Roots of Creation.

The tour will begin in San Diego, CA, in June- with multiple stops in California before heading to Colorado, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, Chicago, Cape Cod, Brooklyn, NY, and more –  and ends in Florida in August. See the full date below – find tickets and learn more here .

REVIEW: Stephen Marley's "Old Soul"

Article contributed by gabriel david barkin | published on wednesday, september 6, 2023.

stephen marley tour review

Jamaica's Marley family has produced no shortage of history, hits, homages, and musical heroes. On his fifth solo album, seven years since his last one, Stephen Marley pays tribute to his storied and successful family – and to a life of inspiration and influences ranging from Frank Sinatra to the Beatles to (no surprise here) his father, Bob Marley.

" Old Soul " will be released by Tuff Gong Collective/UMe/Ghetto Youths International on September 15, 2023.

The headlines for the album will tout the collaborations, including contributions from Bob Weir, Eric Clapton, Buju Banton, San Diego reggae band Slightly Stoopid, and Stephen's brothers Damian "Jr. Gong" and Ziggy. Likewise, covers such as "I Shot the Sheriff" and "Don't Bring Me Down" will attract some media attention and generate a ton of Spotify clicks. But make no mistake, the focus of this album is Stephen Marley. The 51-year-old Grammy winner's voice is the star here, not the headline guests and choice of cover tunes.

Most of the album was recorded in a converted garage on a family farm in Florida.  Some tracks in particular, notably "Old Soul" and the opening track "Don't You Believe," have a stripped-down, live-in-your-living room instrumental feel. The ensemble on these cuts is predominantly acoustic (acoustic guitar, bass, flute, saxophone, trumpet, and nyabinghi drums), giving warmth and intimacy to familiar classics and unfamiliar tunes.

For the record, this isn't a reggae album, though certainly reggae is among its strongest influences. It's an amalgamation of seductive Caribbean and African melodies driven by hand-played drums and accented with woodwinds, trumpet, and piano. "Thanks We Get (Do Fi Dem)," featuring Buju Banton (a Junior Byles classic written by Lee “Scratch” Perry), rolls on waves that flow somewhere between Toots and the Maytals and Jimmy Buffett. Stephen's version of the Beatles' "Don't Let Me Down" also has a decidedly island feel, borrowing a smidgeon of Hawaiian breeze in the acoustic guitar riffs between each vocal phrase. "Winding Roads," with Jack Johnson sitting in and Bob Weir & Wolf Bros as the backing band, is a float-along piece of Americana that sounds like something Jerry Garcia might have crooned in his latter-day "Black Muddy River" phase.

Stephen's mature voice is at times warm, strong, confident, tender, and authentic. On "Cool As The Breeze" for instance, he delivers a silky-smooth ode. It's a good guess that this song is dedicated to his father, but it could just as easily be a love song. In the end, he slips into a falsetto for the closing refrain, a bit wrinkled by refreshing, raw emotion.

"This Time" showcases Stephen's vocal maturity. He doesn't hide his age in lyrics that reflect a middle-aged man's wisdom, such as: "For I'm like a little child, I live with love and not with style." It's a cool and sexy love song tempered by patience but full of passion.

"Georgia On My Mind" combines all these elements well – the intimacy, the melding of genres, a sweet voice retelling familiar stories on the front porch of an island family's home. This version kicks off with piano, a N'awlins trumpet throws a few soft air punches, and then Stephen steps up to the front of the stage with his rendition of the Ray Charles classic (written by Hoagy Carmichael and Stuart Gorrell). It isn't a jaw-dropping interpretation, but it has a comforting, old-pair-of-jeans vibe. Stephen lets the trumpet knock out a few mellow bars – it's one of the longest instrumental breaks on the album – before a Bourbon Street coda.

Stephen even tries his hand at jazz with "These Foolish Things (Reminds Me Of You)," a standard recorded by luminaries including Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Nat King Cole, and Bing Crosby. The version here adds a jumpy island rhythm and rolls at a faster clip than pretty much every other version ever. It's not easy to reconcile the pep with the sadness of the lyrics ("Oh, how the ghost of you clings"). But it is fun and jaunty, and the muted trumpet keeps it from getting downright exultant. Stephen is hanging his hat on the glass-half-full part of the lyric, "Those little things remain that bring me happiness or pain." His heart has wings, where most interpretations have wallowed in profound loss.

"I Shot the Sherrif," a meaningful revisitation to Bob Marley's poignant 1973 protest song, will probably get the most clicks of any track on this album. In the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement and other global struggles for racial justice, Stephen's version of this classic (originally released just a year after his own birth) marks the slow pace of social change over the past five decades. Eric Clapton plays guitar on the new cut, and his licks provide a strong current that drives the flow of the song and keeps it fresh. But it's Marley's take on the lyrics, paced more slowly than both the elder Marley's original and Clapton's famous cover version, that provides gravitas and commands attention. At 51, his voice is even more gravelly, more world-weary than Bob's voice was at 28. It's like he's channeling the old man Bob might have become: Man, is this bullshit still going on?!

"Old Soul," the first track released from the album (earlier this summer), is both a biographical journey and an expression of Stephen's familial spirituality. The song was written originally by Jamaican artist Omi, but Stephen has retooled the lyrics to make it his own. Memories of his father, and a bonus Peter Tosh name-drop, precede stanzas about Stephen's own life journey. He resolves that journey with a declaration of his Rastafarian belief in reincarnation and a deep connection to his ancestry. “I’m an old soul, living in the body of a 9-year-old,” he sings. (He was nine when his father died.) "Inside me, your legacy lives on."

This track might have even more impact if Stephen's voice was engineered with the same living-room ambiance found on most of the other songs on the album. It's a minor nit to pick, but the studio-tinkered feel on "Old Soul" distracts from the honesty and tenderness revealed elsewhere on the album that carries its name.

The video for "Old Soul" intersperses still pictures of Stephen, his father Bob, and other family members with a caption at the end dedicating the song to his own son. Quite the dynasty they've got going on here! The Marley name lives on in many voices, and Stephen's is worth listening to.
