Capcom Pro Tour 2023 US/Canada West results

The online Capcom Pro Tour 2023 continues on, this time with one of the biggest regions, US/Canada West.

Notable players participating include Nephew, Justin Wong, SonicFox, ChrisCCH, JB, Samurai, Snake Eyez, 801 Strider, Wolfgang, PR Balrog, Combofiend, NoahTheProdigy, Reynald and many more. There will also be two of our very own EventHubs workers, EH|Velociraptor and EH|DreamKing in the mix. Character usage stats for this tournament can be found here .

The eligible states and regions to join the event are Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, Alberta, British Columbia, Northwest Territories, Saskatchewan and Yukon.

This is an online Premier event, meaning that the winner of this competition will get a direct qualification to this season's Capcom Cup.

A whopping 628 people signed up for this event making it one of the biggest online Street Fighter events to date, so the road to getting that qualifying spot is going to be harsher than ever, but one player will have claimed it by the end of Sunday

SFV: Capcom Pro Tour Heads to Russia

Last week was a big one for the esports fans of Russia. The Russian Ministry of Sports made an official determination that esports are now considered a sport in the country sparking hope for players who are in need of visas for international play. The decision also grants more accommodations for both Russian players, and foreign players who attend events in the country. The decision seems to have been made at a great time as, over the “Russia Day” holiday weekend, the Capcom Pro Tour event “ Moscow Fighting Arena 2016” was held. Although Russia had several points of celebration through the last week, the winning of their own Capcom Pro Tour event was not one of them.

Ho Kun Xian (or “Xian”) of Singapore claimed his first Pro Tour event win of the year through impressive play with F.A.N.G., a character who is massively polarizing in the SFV community. Xian secured the first place finish in a close grand final match against Wilfried “Will2Pac” Jean-Baptiste in which Xian was able to pull off an impressive 3-2 victory. This win earned the struggling Xian a massive 128 points which has propelled him into 13th place in the overall global Pro Tour standings. Will2Pac still grabbed himself a respectable 64 points for the runner-up position and is currently ranked 22nd overall in the Pro Tour.

Will2Pac was able to reach the finals after a very impressive run through the loser’s bracket winning 7 straight sets only to meet Xian, the man who defeated him earlier in the tournament, once more. Xian was able to once again dispatch Will2Pac (the second time in Moscow Fighting Arena 2016) to claim the title and the big boost in tour points.

Xian, who finished 4th overall in last year’s Pro Tour, hopes that the win in Russia will help him continue to climb towards the top of the rankings. Placing high in the global Pro Tour rankings could grant him a berth into the 2016 Capcom Cup, the capstone event of the Pro Tour. Last year’s event winner, “Kazunoko,” took home $120,000, an extremely large purse for a Street Fighter tournament. Xian is no stranger to the Capcom Cup though, placing 3rd in last year’s top event.

This tournament win not only netted Xian a cool 128 points in the Capcom Pro Tour, but as the winner of the event he has also qualified for the 2016 Europe Regional Finals, which is no doubt a bit of weight off his shoulders.

Although the Moscow Fighting Arena tournament took place in the heart of Russia, the home town players seemed to have a difficult time. The tournament’s top 10 was dominated by non-Russian players including: Xian, Will2Pac, Problem X, Veggey, Cuongster, and RMZ. The highest placing player with the home field advantage was Fidoskin, who tied with Veggey for 5th place.

Looking Forward:

Both the win for Xian and the 2nd place finish for Will2Pac are encouraging for the players and their fans. Neither player has performed exceptionally well in Pro Tour events so far this year. Although both have claimed numerous top 10 finishes, the players have not been able to find a large number of Pro Tour points, which are the deciding factor in who qualifies for the Capcom Cup event. For Xian, the slow start to the Pro Tour this season is especially disappointing as he is a decorated veteran who claimed a 1st place finish in SF4 at Evo 2013.

Xian wins his first Capcom Pro Tour event of the season at Moscow Fighting Arena

Russian Street Fighter fans had plenty to celebrate on national holiday Russia Day on Monday.

A Capcom Pro Tour title was not among them.

Ho Kun Xian of Singapore claimed his first Pro Tour win of the 2016 season with a victory at Moscow Fighting Arena 2016 on Monday. Xian secured the title with a nail-biting 3-2 win in the grand final over Wilfried “Will2Pac” Jean-Baptiste of France.

Xian, who won four Pro Tour events last season, had finished fourth or worse at all three of the Pro Tour events he entered prior to Moscow. His victory gave him 128 points, enough to propel him into the top 15 in the global Pro Tour standings . At least nine players will qualify for Capcom Cup through global leaderboard positions.

The Evo 2013 champion also earned a spot in the European Regional final, the winner of which qualifies directly for Capcom Cup.

Xian and Will2Pac were two of the few foreign players to attend the Russian event. This could partially be attributed to the event’s unique Saturday-to-Monday schedule, which coincides with Russia Day.

Still, most of the international players that did make the trip to Moscow found success. Benjamin “Problem X” Simon and Ramz Shaft “RMZ” Kiggundu Luswa, both of the United Kingdom, placed third and fourth respectively. The Brits were followed by Norway’s Vegard “Veggey” Bugge, who placed fifth. Only ninth-place finisher Cuong “Cuongster” Cao of France failed to finish among the top six.

Co-fifth-place finisher Fedor “Fidoskin” Podgurskii was Russia’s highest-placing representative. He provided the highlight of pool play on Sunday when he defeated Will2Pac on his way to Monday’s top eight session. Once there, he was dispatched to the losers’ bracket by Xian and lost a hard-fought rematch with Will2Pac.

Will2Pac’s revenge was part of an impressive losers’ bracket run. He rebounded from his early defeat by rattling off seven straight wins to reach the grand final. His run included victories over Cuongster, Fidoskin, RMZ, and Problem X.

Although he fell short of a title, Will2Pac’s second-place finish could be a good sign going forward. He has earned his two best Pro Tour results over the past two weeks, with his second-place finish here and his fourth-place finish at The Fight in Colombia.
