Jack Whitehall: Settle Down | Review of the comic's first stand-up tour in four years

Jack Whitehall: Settle Down

Review of the comic's first stand-up tour in four years

Just before the interval of his first tour in four years, Jack Whitehall confesses to always seeking any distraction to avoid having a serious conversation.

That realisation raises the possibility that in the second half the comic will challenge himself to start probing deeper subjects, especially given that the set-up of Settle Down is how, at 34, he is growing up and discarding trivial things as he prepares for fatherhood.

However, save for a couple of fleeting and notable exceptions, deeper self-analysis is thin on the ground. There’s far more about his ‘fur baby’ dog, and how the toy poodle is emasculating (how very on-brand for this perennial beta-male), than the higher responsibility of being a parent.

Whitehall remains the archetypal banter merchant – proving the same great company that’s such an asset to panel shows and talk shows – as his riffs, self-effacingly about his privilege and his feeble masculinity. It’s  sprinkled with a few good gags, but it feels like we’ve been here before. His comedy isn’t maturing as his life is.

After the obligatory references to his father, he harks back to his school days at Marldborough, as he calls it – as if that errant extra letter will keep the lawyers at bay – in the shadow of much more successful alumni such as Emma Watson and Robert Pattison. (And the Princess of Wales, who he fails to mention, maybe she’s an echelon of poshness too far). But he has a nice line in exaggerated indignation at the one time the Daily Mail did name him as an old boy, in a far-from-flattering story about the school.

There’s no faulting his performance skills – he’s excellent at both feigning spontaneity and putting in a few genuine ad-libs, and effective at acting out exaggerated scenarios. His burgeoning demand in Hollywood – where he spent at least one of the years since his last tour – is not a total surprise.

It means he can hold the audience. In the brief moment he talks about his partner Roxy Horner’s miscarriage, he has the audience’s full attention and sympathy. But it’s not long before that compulsion to head for the trivial kicks in again and we’re imagining God designing zebras, inspired by a safari he took where he found himself among Americans who were – guess what? –  loud and stupid.

Fans already know most of his life’s landmarks from the media, such as how diabetic Roxy collapsed at the Brit Awards – related here with something of a glib punchline. But sometimes the elevated circles he moves in are exploited well. The relatable fears of how you measure up to a partner’s ex become a whole different prospect when that man is Leonardo DiCaprio.

Much is about he’s a victim of relentless ill-fortune – presumably considered more accessible than his rarefied upbringing and A-list lifestyle. A recurring theme is about he’s a ‘massive melt’, a coward unable to defend Roxy’s honour when a bouncer disrespects her. Meanwhile, a routine about the humiliation of dining alone in a restaurant gives reign to those act-outs, though there’s not too much substance behind it. And of course there’s an anecdote about drunken high jinks.

Plenty of topics are stand-up staples that could be – and have been – told by anyone: mocking right-wing fundamentalists for getting vexxed about ‘woke’ Disney movies; how Americans would whoop and cheer at news of him becoming a parent but Brits are cynically subdued; wondering what songs will be golden oldies when the current youngsters are in their dotage… He closes with a stirring speech about what he loves about Britain – Greggs, pub gardens and surly service staff – as stirring music plays. It seems cynical and manipulative.

In a rare philosophical moment, Whitehall reflects that he spent his youth chasing pleasure, while now he’s achieving happiness. If only he could find similar maturity in his comedy, which offers plenty of enjoyable snacks, but little that’s more satisfying.

Comedian Jack Whitehall - who was spotted filming in Exeter two years ago - is to return back to the city next month as part of his new UK tour. Following three sell-out arena tours, he is now back on the road with Jack Whitehall: Settle Down.

It will stop off at Exeter University's Great Hall on Wednesday, August 2, and - due to popular demand - he will be performing not one but two shows. The first will kick off at 6.30pm, followed by another at 9pm, with tickets prices £40.50.

It was back in April 2021 that Jack and his famous father Michael were spotted in Burnthouse Lane , Wonford, outside Choy's fish and chip shop, with a camera crew. It was speculated that the filming was for a new series of Jack's hit Netflix show Travels With My Father.

Other suggestions were the pair were filming for a new show tracing their family DNA. However, it is not believed the footage has ever aired on television so the reason for their visit still remains a mystery.

In the meantime, Jack has been continuing to do what he does best - stand-up shows. His biggest-ever stand-up tour to date, Jack Whitehall: Stood Up, sold out arenas across the UK, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia.

jack whitehall tour torquay

It was the UK's largest comedy tour of 2019, with a ticketed audience of more than 450,000. Looking forward to bringing a new show to his fans, Jack said: “So far it’s been incredible playing to some of the best crowds I’ve ever performed in front of. There were a few places we weren’t able to slot into the summer so I am really excited to be able to add some additional dates in the autumn.”

Jack is an award-winning comedian, actor, presenter and writer. He most recently starred alongside Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt in Disney’s Jungle Cruise, and in Clifford The Big Red Dog for Paramount. Both films are currently in development for sequels.

He can currently be seen alongside Shailene Woodley in Robots, an independent romantic comedy directed by Academy Award nominee Ant Hines. Jack has also just finished filming the second season of the Apple TV+ hit comedy series, The Afterparty opposite Tiffany Haddish, Zoe Chao and Sam Richardson, which will be released this year.

Comedian Jack Whitehall performs on stage

Jack is widely celebrated for his hit Netflix show Travels With My Father, which released its fifth season last year. He has also starred in Good Omens opposite Jon Hamm and Michael Sheen for Amazon and Bounty Hunters opposite Rosie Perez for Sky Television.

He began his career at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2007, where he won both The Charlie Hartill Special Reserve Competition and The Amused Moose Laugh Off. A string of further awards followed, including The British Comedy Awards' King Of Comedy, as voted for by the public, three years in a row.

Jack's lastest live show is expected to last for 90 minutes, including an interval. For more details and to book tickets, please click here.

'Jack Whitehall: Fatherhood With My Father' Review: Babies Not on Board

Don't expect much parenting insight from the comedian's new show (and consider that a blessing)

jack whitehall fatherhood with my father l to r michael whitehall, jack whitehall in fatherhood with my father cr courtesy of netflix copy 2024

I’ve often wondered what the whole having-a-baby thing is like for dads. “What’s it like for dads?” I asked myself, as I howled like an injured Wookiee in the labour ward, while my other half polished off the NHS-issue fish and chips. “What’s it like for dads?” I pondered, as I sat in an armchair breastfeeding my baby for the fifth time one night, while my sleeping partner spread out like a starfish in our bed. “What’s it like for dads?” I mused, as my sense of self slid quietly out the door. So thank god! Jack Whitehall – and his dad – are here to enlighten us in the form of a new four-part TV show : Jack Whitehall: Fatherhood with my Father . Some answers at last.

Comedian Jack and his dad, Michael, are a familiar double act, having trundled around the world together for five series of Jack Whitehall: Travels with My Father . Their dynamic is well established by now: Jack is impish, immature and amusing; Michael is stiff, sweary and exasperated. They obviously get on deep down of course, and the new show at least purports to announce a new chapter in their relationship as Jack begins a new one of his own, having become, by the second episode, the father of baby Elsie. Here will be a chance for Jack to explore the travails of modern parenthood, while also getting a better understanding of what his own dad must have been through while raising him; or as Michael puts it, that “there's more to life than just arsing around”.

The first episode, “Birth”, at least has a veneer of genuine enquiry. Jack and Michael attend an antenatal class (great!); Jack and Michael learn about perineal massage (hmm); Jack tries out an empathy belly (sigh); Michael zaps Jack with a TENS machine (ho ho!); Jack leaves Roxy and Elsie in London and flies with Michael to America to get swaddled by a celebrant in a spiritual rite of passage (...Oh). The giant blanket may be on, but the gloves, as far as Jack's real TV-making agenda goes, are off.

“Since little Elsie has come into my life, I’ve been thinking a lot about protection,” he says, at the start of episode three, “Survival”. “Not that kind of protection,” he quips, because he can’t help himself, “although to be fair I have also thought quite a lot about that because right now the idea of having two of them… fuck that.” No, what he means is protecting his baby from the perils that the world may bring: Doomsday, the zombie apocalypse, nuclear annihilation. “We’d probably be better off baby-proofing the house,” Horner suggests while she stands at the sink doing washing up, as Jack slumps over the breakfast bar eating a carrot.

To be fair to Jack though, who wants to watch tired parents installing a baby gate? So instead, while Horner stays home to put covers on the plug sockets, he and Michael are off to Utah to meet some heavily armed survivalists and tour luxury condos inside a vast nuclear bunker. In the episode before that, “Technology”, he and Michael were in Cornwall meeting a sexy robot, and then in California to meet unhinged people who insert magnets under the skin, in order, er, for Jack “to understand how body modification might affect Elsie in the future.” Later he’ll go to a medical centre in Italy and a sweat lodge in LA for… I forget.

Of course it’s all silly, and of course Whitehouse know that. Despite the occasional archive clip of Michael and baby Jack in days gone by, it’s hard to believe he’s devoting even one iota of seriousness to the thesis of his own show. He's simply using it as a loosely thematic justification for a few more whacky adventures with his grumpy pops (and his also quite sound-seeming mum, Hilary); any emotional evolution that may or not be happening to him is taking place firmly off-screen.

If you've watched all five seasons of the previous outings by Whitehall père et fils , you might also find the formula is losing its potency. Jack will make a joke about Michael being 100 years old; Michael will tell Jack to fuck off; repeat ad infinitum. It’s definitely predictable, and possibly a bit tired. But – try as you might to resist it – it is also an easy televisual trot-along that works.

Whitehall’s gift has always been to lean in to and turn to his own advantage the things that others might find most objectionable about him: his poshness, his wimpishness, his uselessness. He’s clearly pathologically unable to resist undercutting any serious conversation with a silly gag, but like it or not, he’s also genuinely very funny. (I laughed out loud when he kicked out a dainty leg while posing for a group photo with a bunch of brawny preppers: he might not have muscles but he’s got balls.)

And yes, the format’s a little old and a little lightweight, and you’ll learn next to nothing about having a baby – except that when you’re massaging someone’s perineum, you should treat it like the face of a clock and rub it “from three to nine” – but actually, who really wants emotional excavation on a Wednesday night? And certainly not from a posh, wimpish, useless comedian (damn it! He’s got me again!). The thousand-dollar “what’s it like for dads?” question can remain unanswered for now; to be honest, no one was that interested anyway. As Jack says when he staggers out of the sweat lodge, his naked mum clambering out behind him: “Fuck it, this is a television show, they’ve got enough for the edit.”

Jack Whitehall: Fatherhood With My Father- Release date, cast, plot, and everything you need to know

Netflix's upcoming limited series, Jack Whitehall: Fatherhood With My Father, is slated to drop on September 10, 2024. The four-part series follows the new father cum British comedian Jack Hall as he embarks on a journey to understand fatherhood. His father, Michael Whitehall, is accompanying him on this journey. The two previously co-starred in the Netflix series Travels With My Father.

Jack Whitehall had his daughter, Elsie, in September 2023, so he tries to pick at his father's wisdom in the upcoming unscripted show. The father-son duo traverses the world to learn what fatherhood means to different cultures. The official synopsis reads:

"Jack Whitehall and his father embark on a globe-trotting trip to find answers to the big questions facing the comedian after becoming a dad."

Cast of Jack Whitehall: Fatherhood With My Father

The following faces will grace your screens in the show's four episodes:

  • Jack Whitehall
  • Michael Whitehall
  • Kagga Jayson

Plot of Jack Whitehall: Fatherhood With My Father

The show's trailer dropped in September 2024. It shows clips of him pushing around a pram while roller-blading and climbing up the stairs while struggling with many baby toys. In the clip, we can see him asking his father for advice about the actual birth, to which he jokingly replies,

"I think the best advice I could give you is don't, whatever you do, get down on the business end of things. What goes down on there has nothing to do with you."

However, the trailer also shows a more serious side of him, as he says,

"I genuinely think I might be one of the most inadequate people you could possibly imagine to become a dad. How am I gonna do it?"

In another reflective moment, Jack admits to his mother, Hilary,

"I'm just quite scared."

The video also shows the younger Whitehall trotting around in a baby bump as he tries to understand more about what it's like to be pregnant. To kick things up a notch, he also gets contractions stimulated.

Jack and Michael Whitehall previously starred in a travel documentary/road trip comedy Netflix series. Unlike Jack Whitehall: Fatherhood With My Father, the show depicts the father-son duo embarking on a journey worldwide. The series spans four seasons, with the first debuting in September 2017 and the last in September 2021.
