Islands To Visit in Lakshadweep
Agatti island.
Agatti Island will be your first stop as you land at Lakshadweep . The island boasts of having some of the finest beaches and offers tons of water sports activities. The beaches are clean and the water is deep blue teeming with the most colorful and diverse underwater world.
Where To Stay:
Local guesthouses and a few private-run resorts are the only options.
Do check the latest update on the official tourism site.
Bangaram Island
Surrounded by a shallow lagoon this island is one of the most beautiful islands of Lakshadweep. It boasts world-class corals and rich marine life. From shipwreck snorkeling sites to hidden beaches with hermit crabs, the bluest of the blue ocean to a lagoon full of sea turtles, Bangaram fits the bill perfectly for a perfect beach experience.
Where To Stay:
The only option is to stay at the Bangaram Island resort which is run by SPORTS ( Lakshadweep Tourism ).
Travel Time
- From Agatti: 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the boat.
Pareli 1 & 2
These tiny islands surrounded by the shallow lagoon on one side and the deep sea on the other can be covered by foot in 15-30 minutes. The shallow lagoon is home to numerous sea turtles whereas the deep sea is home to sharks and stingrays.
The island is full of ( hungry 😉 ) hermit crabs, and sea turtles.
No options. These islands can be visited as day trips from Bangaram, Agatti or Thinnakara
- From Agatti: 30 -75 min depending on the boat
- From Bangaram: 20-40 min depending on the boat
- From Thinnakara: 15 min
A bite-sized island midst a shallow lagoon makes Thinnakara an ideal place for vacation. It is isolated and just a few cottages are dotted on the shores. It is a perfect escape for those who want to be away from the rush of life. You can snorkel, sail out in your kayak, play beach volleyball, and relax in a hammock doing nothing.
Even at times, it might happen you are the only one with the resort staff on the island.
Cottages on the Island
- From Agatti: 20-40 min depending on the boat.
Kadamat Island
Kadmat is one of the most stunning islands in the archipelago. You will find dolphins cleaving through the clear blue waters, sea turtles all around might come to greet you on your way to Kadmat from Agatti.
The phenomenal sweep of talcum-powder sand with dramatic waves breaking across the bay is an everyday thing here. Apart from the scenic vista, the island also offers various water sports activities like diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and paragliding to name a few. Some of the best diving spots can be found here.
Kadmat Island Resort – You have an option of NonAC tents and AC rooms to choose from. However, the Non-AC tents are a little far from the main resort.
Minicoy Island
Minicoy Island is a beautiful coral island dotted in the Arabian Sea full of dense coconut groves, a long stretch of white powdery beaches, and an amazing marine world. The island is distinct from the rest of the islands in terms of culture, lifestyle, and language. You can find a lot of influence from Maldivian and South Indian culture on this island.
There are three tourist cottages and one 20-bed tourist home.
Kalpeni Island
Kalpeni is famed for its bewitching landscape with the small islets Tilakkam & Pitti and an uninhabited island on the north called Cheriyam. You can walk to Cheriyam island from Kalpeni during low tides but make sure you are not barefoot.
The islands of Kalpeni were reshaped because of a huge storm in the 1800s and the formation of the beautiful corals is attributed to this storm. It has the largest lagoons among all the islands of Lakshadweep. These lagoons are quite shallow and are perfect for all sorts of water sports activities. You can also explore the Sait Moinuddin mosque while on the island.
Koomel Beach Resort is the only resort for tourists and it is run by SPORTS (Lakshadweep Tourism).
Kavaratti Island
It is the capital of Lakshadweep and the most developed of all the islands. Apart from sun-drenched white sandy beaches, and amazing coral reefs, you can also explore the aquarium and museum on the island.
Ujra Mosque constructed by Sheikh Mohammad Kasim in the 17th century is one of the most prominent attractions on the island and draws a lot of tourists. The island also offers a plethora of water sports activities like kayaking, snorkeling, parasailing, and scuba diving at a very reasonable rate.
Kavaratti Island Beach Resort

I am planning a trip to lakshdweep in january, I will be alone and do not want to spend much on stay. Please suggest whether i can get some cheap stay after reaching there, or prebooking/e-booking is required? Please note I am a solo traveller and I generally focus on sightseeing and local cuisines and culture. I can manage with some cheap accomodation.
December 9, 2016 at 7:12 pm
Hi Prashant, you need a permit to travel to Lakshadweep. This permit is arranged by SPORTS or any other travel agent which takes care of your lodging (the details of travel agents are on the SPORTS Lakshadweep website). We would highly recommend a pre-booking. For more details, you can check the website of SPORTS Lakshadweep.

I want to plan my own trip and not go for any package. Will Sports help me get permit if I only book my lodgings through them?

So I wan to see the place again taking with my mother. Can you please suggest a 2-3 days (max) itinerary covering Minicoy. I want to see Minicoy.

December 26, 2016 at 7:08 pm
What is the approximate total cost for a week trip. I want to mainly know how much we would spend on daily stays at each island and the no of ppl on sharing basis.
January 21, 2017 at 9:41 am
Awesome post! It’s so confusing the information on google about these islands! Just wondering – is Minicoy an inhabited island? Just because you mention that there are 3 guest houses owned by locals there. Also if we were to book a few days through SPORT and stay at their accomodation, could we extend our stay and stay at local accomodation somewhere? Do we need to apply to SPORTs to be able to stay in local accomodation? I just assume local places would be cheaper?
February 17, 2017 at 7:39 am
Awesome tips. Thank you so much for this post. Being located so close to use, Lakshadweep is in the top of my wishlist! I really hope to go soon…
July 15, 2017 at 4:19 pm

Not the whole trip only the accommodation and transfer between islands … food is inclusive
July 26, 2017 at 4:50 pm
hey..Thanks for the informative post.. Though I have a query.. you have given quite a detailed information of the islands while SPORTS website is mostly about about the cruise packages and they dont cover all the island either. Did you guys make your own itinerary and visited the place via flight. Would it be possible for you to give an idea about the ititnerary you followed.

The Ultimate Lakshadweep Itinerary: A Complete Guide For Beginners
Are you trying to find the best Lakshadweep itinerary? The very name Lakshadweep translates to “a hundred thousand islands.” Besides that, Lakshadweep is a group of islands off the coast of Kerala with miles of perfect, uncrowded beaches, beautiful lagoons, and turquoise-blue water teeming with marine life.
However, if you plan to visit this piece of paradise, look no further. In this post, we have shared our Lakshadweep itinerary, how to reach this beautiful place, places to stay here, and things to do there.
About Lakshadweep
Lakshadweep is a group of 36 islands with exotic beaches, lush green landscapes, and diverse marine life, which means ‘a hundred thousand islands’ in Malayalam and Sanskrit.
Moreover, Lakshadweep is India’s smallest Union Territory, with 36 islands covering an area of 32 sq km. The capital and principal town is Kavaratti. In fact, the islands, which sit in the Arabian Sea, are 220-440 km away from Kerala’s Kochi city. Likewise, Lakshadweep has a unique, relaxed atmosphere and offers natural landscapes, sandy beaches, and diverse flora and fauna. Thus, create a Lakshadweep itinerary that suits your requirements.
There is good connectivity to the islands via flights from Kochi. Not to mention, Agatti-Kavaratti helicopter transfers are available year-round. Temperatures in Lakshadweep range from 27°C to 32°C on average due to its tropical climate. On the other hand, ship-based tourism remains off-limits during monsoons.
Making Plans to Travel to Lakshadweep
The time and month of your trip will determine the itinerary you choose for Lakshadweep. What is the duration of your desired stay in the Lakshadweep Islands? Our trip lasted ten days because we wanted to stay for at least one week. However, the majority of tourists would rather spend five to seven days in Lakshadweep, India. Out of one lakh islands, only a small number are accessible to you.
Tourism has little impact on the vast majority of the islands. Agatti, Bangaram, Minicoy, Thinnkarra, Kavaratti, and Kaadmat are a few of the islands that are accessible for visits. The majority of the islands have spotty internet service; it feels like a distant dream here. Therefore, keep that in mind before you planning a trip to Lakshadweep . These days, there are two ways to see the Lakshadweep Islands: with a cruise package or on a personalized schedule. If you choose the cruise package, you will spend the entire trip on a cruise with the option to disembark at a few locations.
On your cruise package, you can also choose to participate in some water sports. After all, you will find it easy to visit all the larger and smaller islands and stay on the properties with a customized Lakshadweep itinerary.
The Perfect Time to Visit Lakshadweep
Selecting the correct moment to visit Lakshadweep is essential to a memorable experience. The archipelago experiences tropical weather, and the best time to visit Lakshadweep are from October to April.
Well, the weather is pleasant at this time of year, with clear skies and calm seas, making it ideal for sightseeing and other water activities.
How to Reach Lakshadweep by Flight
There is air travel from Kochi to Lakshadweep Island. For tourists, Kochi is the gateway to Lakshadweep.
Islands such as Agatti and Bangaram are accessible via air from Kochi. Indian Airlines operates flights from Kochi. Furthermore, most airports in India and overseas are accessible from Kochi. Well, Agatti Island has a runway. Thus, during the rainy season, it is possible to travel from Agatti to Kavaratti by helicopter. Above all, the flight from Cochin to Agatti takes about thirty minutes and an hour.
We are here to provide you with inexpensive flight tickets from USA to India and to provide a smooth travel experience for anyone traveling from USA to India and hoping to see the unspoiled beauty of Lakshadweep. However, visitors usually take a plane to one of the major Indian cities, such as Mumbai, Kochi, or Thiruvananthapuram, to get to this tropical paradise by air. In addition, there are plenty of connecting flights from there to Aggati, which is the entry point to Lakshadweep. The main air entry point into the archipelago is Agatti Airport, which makes it easy to visit the stunning coral atolls and turquoise lagoons. Hence, this is the guide to the Lakshadweep itinerary that will help you get there.
Islands to Visit Lakshadweep
Agatti islands.
One of Lakshadweep’s most exquisite lagoons is accessible in Agatti. The airport sits on this island. The view of the island’s airstrip is amazing as one approaches the aircraft for a landing. Agatti is the digital entry point for the islands. This 20-bed attraction offers all the comforts of the modern world. Agatti is one of the easiest islands in Lakshadweep to reach, due to flights operated by Indian Airlines. As you are aware, we also provide inexpensive flight tickets Canada to India , providing travelers with an easy and affordable way to experience the breathtaking beauty of Lakshadweep.
Bangaram Islands
Bangaram is a small island resembling a teardrop that is close to Agatti and Kavaratti. Visitors have a great chance to relax from the stresses and strains of contemporary life at this island’s tourist resort. At the same time, the same lagoon surrounds the two small islands near Bangaram, Thinnakara, and Parali. The phosphorescent plankton that washes ashore on the coral sands at night transforms the beach into a magical blue glow. In fact, visitors to this resort have the option of arriving by helicopter or boat from Agatti. Being the only uninhabited island resort in Lakshadweep has its own charm. In short, Bangaram is a popular destination for affluent, discriminating travelers and is firmly on the international tourism map.
Thinnakara Islands
Situated directly across from Bangaram Island, Thinnakara Island shares the large lagoon and coralline banks with Bangaram Island; the lagoon’s actual area is 125.21 square km. It lies on the lagoon’s north-south border, between Parali (i) and Parali (ii).
The airport is 8 kilometers northeast of Agatti on the tiny teardrop-shaped island of Thinnakara. The view includes stunning lagoons, serene seashores, sun-kissed sand, the allure of swaying palms, and amazing marine life. Here, everything works together to create a colorful kaleidoscope reminiscent of an archipelago paradise. In a nutshell, the beach is completely mesmerizing at night when phosphorescent plankton washes ashore on the coral sands and gives it a blue glow.
Since Thinnakara Island has opened to foreign visitors, those wishing to experience the breathtaking beauty of Lakshadweep on a tight budget can now take advantage of our cheap Flight Bookings to India . Nonetheless, Thinnakara offers a constant array of exciting activities in addition to well-managed tent accommodations along the beach. Here, you can visit Thinnakara, Bangaram, the site of the famous scuba diving sport, by sailing boat, kayak, speed boat, snorkeling, and so on.
Kadmat Islands
Kadmat Island, also known as Cardamom Island, is a coral island belonging to the Aminidivi subgroup of islands in the Lakshadweep archipelago in India. Measuring 9.3 kilometers (5.8 mi) in length, the island has a lagoon with a width of 1.5 kilometers (0.93 mi) covering an area of 25 square kilometers (9.7 sq mi). The ecological feature of the island is a coral reef with sea grass and marine turtles that nestle here. The Ministry of Environment and Forests (India) has notified the island as a marine protected area to ensure the conservation of the island’s animals, plants, other types of organisms, and other resources.
Amini Islands
If you are planning a Lakshadweep island trip , make sure to include the Amini Islands on your itinerary. Situated between Kavaratti Island in the South and Kadmat Island in the North, Amini Island is 407 km (220 nautical miles) from Kochi. This island is oval, measuring 2.70 km in length and 1.20 km at its widest point. Additionally, its latitude and longitude are 11° 06′ to 11° 08′ N and 72° 42′ to 72° 45′ E, respectively. Its land area is 2.60 sq km and its lagoon area is 1.50 sq km. With a depression in the middle, this oval-shaped island is set two to three meters above mean sea level.
In fact, the building also features corals and sandstone. This region’s expert craftspeople are well-known for their tortoiseshell and coconut-based walking sticks. It is well known for its stone engravers in addition to its rich folk song tradition. The Arabic word “Amin,” which means faithful,” is the source of the island’s name.

Lakshadweep – A Practical Travel Guide to India’s Coral Paradise
- April 28, 2022
In March 2022, I embarked on a five-day, solo summer journey to paradise, packaged as the smallest union territory of India – Lakshadweep. TBH, it felt like I died and went to heaven for those five days if heaven were sunny, sandy, and endlessly blue. Not only are the coral islands visually and soulfully breathtaking—crystal clear waters, powdery beaches, unbelievable marine life, and the most welcoming people—but for the entire duration of my travel to Lakshadweep, I was without a care in the world, even when I lost my boarding pass, got bit by a fish and saw my return flight cancelled! Heaven, amirite?
While I will always rave about my travel adventures in Lakshadweep, there’s a catch. Planning a getaway to Lakshadweep can get tricky—not because there’s a lack of information; it’s the opposite—but because there are quite a few moving parts involved. So, here’s everything I know about these ‘ hundred thousand islands ‘ in what I hope is a brutally honest and super practical guide to arm you with all you need to head to this coral paradise, with or without company.
About Lakshadweep
Although Lakshadweep is Sanskrit and Malayalam for a hundred thousand islands, the IRL count is a teeny fraction of this number. Twelve atolls, three reefs, and five submerged banks house thirty-six islands to make up one of the most picturesque tropical island systems in the world. It’s more lagoon than land, with the former covering 4,200 km², while the latter totals up to a mere 32 km². New Delhi , in comparison, is nearly 43 km².
Expect tropical weather, with an average temperature of 27° C to 32° C, the coolest months being December and January, and the hottest being April and May. Between June and October, the South West Monsoon is in full swing.
Coastal climate means humid, sunny, and warm weather. Mornings and evenings can be pleasant and breezy, while afternoons can get bright and sweltering. Agatti is somehow the hottest and most humid of all the islands.
Locals, Culture, and Language
The people of Lakshadweep are probably the kindest, friendliest, and most helpful lot I’ve come across. Their willingness to not only strike a conversation but also readily offer a helping hand is a boon to many a traveller, especially when solo.
Religion – Most are descendants of migrants from India’s Malabar Coast, who arrived before the 7th century CE and converted to Islam sometime in the 7th century. The people are warm, with unity across religions that is beautiful to observe.
Language – Jesiri or Dweep Bhasha —a musical amalgamation of Malayalam, Tamil, and Arabic, written in Malayalam script—is commonly spoken here, as is Malayalam. Locals also speak some Hindi and little English, which are what travellers defer to. If you’re even slightly fluent in Malayalam, communicating here is easy peasy. In Minicoy, locals mostly speak Mahl .
Culture – You will observe typical Indian coastal culture with strong Islamic influences in all the islands except Minicoy, where the culture is closer to that of the Maldives due to its proximity to the island group.
Food and Alcohol
Two words to describe the food in Lakshadweep? Comforting and delicious.
The staple cuisine resembles that of Kerala – rice with sambhar or dal, avial , idli or dosa with chutney, stews, coconut-based curries, and of course, seafood. Tuna is available almost anywhere, and most travel accommodations in Lakshadweep will offer either tuna or some fish dish for lunch and dinner. That said, there are many vegetarian- and vegan-friendly options to enjoy. Resorts offer a basic continental and Indian spread for breakfast.
For someone with coastal blood coursing through their veins (Mangalorean, at your service), all meals felt like I was eating the food my mum makes – never a bad thing!
Expecting plush restaurants when you travel to Lakshadweep will leave you disappointed. You can find small cafes and eateries on local-inhabited islands. Typically, your accommodation will provide three meals and refreshments – enough to keep you satiated.
Since a majority of Lakshadweep’s population practices Islam, alcohol sale and consumption are prohibited, except in Bangaram, where you’ll get limited options in the resort!
Lakshadweep Travel Planning
Here’s all you need to know about the islands you can visit, the best time to travel to Lakshadweep, how to get there, and more.
The Islands
Of the 36 islands, 10 are inhabited, of which only a handful are open to travellers. There are plans underway to open more islands and islets to tourism.
- Inhabited and open to tourists – Agatti, Kadmat , Kalpeni , Kavaratti, Minicoy
- Uninhabited and open to tourists – Bangaram, Pitti , Thinnakara
- Inhabited and not open to tourists yet – Amini, Androth, Bitra, Chetlat, Kiltan
Only Agatti, Bangaram, and Kadmat are open to non-Indian travellers.
The Best Time to Travel to Lakshadweep
October to April is the best time to travel to Lakshadweep – perfect beach weather. The peak tourist season is in winter, particularly in December, so expect hotel and resort tariffs to increase.
During monsoon, ship-based tourism is closed, although ships may continue operating for locals. Flights and helicopters may operate year-round, making accessibility to Agatti and Bangaram possible. While the rains give a splash of emerald and enhance the beauty of the lagoons, travel during monsoons is not advised.
Tip: I visited Lakshadweep towards the end of March, and it turned out to be a good time to travel – great beach weather without throngs of tourists.
Getting to Lakshadweep
There are only two ways in and out of Lakshadweep – air and sea.
Air – Presently, the only airport is in Agatti, and only one flight—Air India/Star Alliance ATR 72600—operates in and out of the island, from Kochi. Travellers typically fly into Kochi, and then Agatti. The flight takes approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes to reach Agatti. Check-in baggage allowance is limited to 15 kg per person.
Best to book your flights at least 45 days in advance, since seats fill up pretty fast.
I travelled from Bangalore, so my Air India flight followed the Bangalore -> Mysore -> Kochi -> Agatti route and took 4.5 hours.
Tip: If travelling from a city further than Kochi (e.g., Delhi, Mumbai), book connecting flights via Air India itself. My return flight from Agatti to Bangalore was cancelled, which wasn’t an issue for me because I didn’t need a connecting flight. But those who did and had booked connecting flights on other carriers like Vistara had to rebook at an additional cost.
Ship – Seven passenger ships ply between Kochi and Lakshadweep. The travel time is anywhere between 14 to 18 hours, depending on the destination island.
At the time of my travels, only two ships were in operation.
Island hopping – Inter-island transport is by sea, with vessel sizes depending on the island’s distance. For instance, the vessel from Agatti to Kavaratti and back is a large carrier, while the one to Bangaram is a speed boat.
Travel within islands – On some islands, you can cover the distance from one end to the other on foot. In Agatti and Kavaratti, autos are available for hire. You may also find cycles and mopeds for rent.
Which Island to Visit, and What to Do
If only I could visit them all, I would!
While all islands may seem similar at the surface, each offers something unique and works for different budgets. I couldn’t travel to Kadmat, Kalpeni and Minicoy this time, so I stayed in Agatti, Kavaratti and Bangaram, and took a half-day trip to Thinnakara; here is my take on each.
But first, it’s important to know that most of Lakshadweep’s tourism is managed by SPORTS.
What is SPORTS?
The Society for Promotion of Nature Tourism and Sports, or SPORTS, was formed by the Lakshadweep Administration in 1982 to promote environmentally conscious tourism and to function as the hospitality wing of the Lakshadweep Administration.
SPORTS operates resorts in Bangaram, Kadmat, Kavaratti and Minicoy, tents in Thinnakara, and ship package tours across Kadmat, Kalpeni, Kavaratti, and Minicoy. The Society also operates State Guest Houses and Dak Bungalows of the Administration.
Whether you book directly or through a travel agent, permits, transfers and most accommodation (except in Agatti) will be via SPORTS.
Air travel-wise, Agatti is your gateway into Lakshadweep since the island houses the Lakshadweep airport. From here, travellers are transferred to the islands of Bangaram and Kavaratti. A good number of travellers don’t stay here, choosing to head to other islands instead.
This doesn’t mean Agatti has nothing to offer. The turquoise waters of the lagoon are home to turtles, diverse corals and fishes in spectacular colours. Kayaking, sailing, snorkelling, scuba diving, fishing and water skiing await all those who choose to stay.
If you’re looking for a slow and serene tropical getaway with a flavour of local island life, Agatti is the island for you. It’s also ideal for those short on time or those who need to stick to a tight budget since accommodation rates start at INR 5,000 per night. If you choose to stay at Agatti, spend at least 2 days and 2 nights here, if not more.
Accommodation in Agatti – Agatti has no SPORTS-managed accommodation for tourists. SPORTS only operates a Union Territory Guest House, which is meant for government officials and contractors, and as a transit rest-stop for travellers flying into Agatti and then travelling to other islands.
Privately managed accommodations – from resorts to homestays – can be found in Agatti.
You can add Agatti to your island-hopping itinerary as well, choosing to spend at least a day here before, in between or after your time on other islands.
The poster child of Lakshadweep, the tourist-only island of Bangaram is perfect for beach bums, with its jewelled waters and nearly snow-white sand. Save the staff of the Bangaram Island Resort and their families, you won’t find locals here.
Hushed days, balmy evenings and star-speckled nights welcome all who stay at Bangaram. From snorkelling at the coral gardens and the shipwreck, and scuba diving, to crossing the lagoon during low tide to get to a private sandbank, your days will dreamily pass by with a blissful ‘vacay-mode-on’ vibe. The lone resort offers a recreation room with a lounge area, some games, and a decently stocked bar. And if you’re lucky, you may catch bioluminescence as you walk along the shore after dinner!
While Bangaram is perfect for all types of travellers, the demographic skews toward honeymooners and families with small children. Still, I had the pleasure of making the acquaintance of solo travellers, friend groups, girls-only gaggles, and empty nesters.
Bangaram is a 45-minute speed boat journey from Agatti.
- For overnight stay at the resort, you will be transferred via a speedboat from Agatti. Spend at least 2 days and 1 night here.
- Since it’s close to Agatti, you can plan a day trip to Bangaram from Agatti, and return via the same boat. This works well for budget travellers since accommodation prices at Bangaram are pretty steep.
Accommodation in Bangaram – Bangaram Island Resort is the only accommodation available on the island. The resort has beach-facing single and double air-conditioned cottages.
You can book your stay here either through the SPORTS website or the Bangaram Island Resort website.
The capital of Lakshadweep is a 2.5-hour sea journey from Agatti and is bustling with life – human, animal and marine. Kavaratti offers an ambient mix of seaside activities and a true feeling of Lakshadweep’s local life and culture. The scuba diving experience with the Kavaratti PADI-certified dive centre is phenomenal! In fact, it is quite affordable to dive here as compared to other places in India and abroad. Add to this the relatively cheaper stay as compared to Bangaram, it’s a steal to get PADI certified and spend a few days at Kavaratti.
Kavaratti is a haven for travellers who are looking to know more about Lakshadweep’s history and culture. You can spend a day exploring the island from the western jetty all the way to the eastern jetty where the larger ships such as MV Lagoons dock.
You can explore the island in less than half a day, on an auto or even a cycle. Observe the lighthouse from a distance (no entry inside, sadly), visit the Marine Museum, and pass chicken neck – the narrowest point of the island where you can see the lagoon side and the sea side together, walk to the site of an old beached ship, and chat with locals about their days on the island over a cup of coffee.
To experience the best of Kavaratti, spend at least 2 days and 2 nights here.
Accommodation in Kavaratti – Tourist stays are on the lagoon side of the island, close to the Western jetty. Expect busy views of the lagoon, with transit vessels and fishing boats docking in and out.
Paradise Island Hut Resort is the SPORTS accommodation available in Kavaratti. 6 air-conditioned double rooms are available.
There are also private homestay options available.
A teardrop-shaped uninhabited island merely 20 minutes away from Bangaram, Thinnakara previously had tents for tourists to spend a few nights in, which were removed, thanks to COVID. They could return in the near future.
Still, a day trip from Bangaram is possible, with turtles giving you company as your boat makes its way across transparent waters that show off massive coral gardens. At Thinnakara, you can walk the length and breadth of the island and then cut through the middle to visit the lone house whose inhabitants serve sweet elaneer (tender coconut water), fresh toddy and even some mouth-watering coconut jaggery.
Accommodation in Thinnakara – Only non-air-conditioned tents are available here. At the time of my travels, there were no tents on the island.
Kadmat, Kalpeni and Minicoy
Visiting the islands I missed out on is definitely in my plans for the near future, so until then, this is all I have on Kadmat, Kalpeni and Minicoy.
Kadmat Island Beach Resort has 36 sea-facing air-conditioned rooms and a few standard non-a/c rooms.
Minicoy Island Resort is a 20-bedded stay on the southern side of the island, close to the lighthouse. Each cottage has an open-to-sky bathroom with coral-laid flooring.
Besides these, private stays are available.
Packages and Other Accommodation
Besides the above, you can travel to Lakshadweep through package tours from SPORTS, or private travel agency packages.
Packages under SPORTS
These packages are a no-brainer for hassle-free travel to Lakshadweep since nearly everything except flights—accommodation, permits, transit fees, food and refreshments—is covered. Water sports may require an additional payment over the package rates.
Details and bookings for SPORTS packages can be found/done here –
Packages through Private Agencies
Private packages from reputed travel agencies include cruises, on-island stays, water activities and sightseeing. Often, travel agents will make your stay arrangements through SPORTS-managed accommodations, except in Agatti.
Tip: While it’s tempting to plan a DIY trip, I recommend having it managed by a private operator. They work closely with SPORTS to coordinate bookings, permits, fees, and transits. I went via Smile India, who had previously managed my family trips to Rajasthan and Bali.
Permits and Paperwork
Entry into Lakshadweep for tourists is strictly regulated, and a permit is required, for both Indian and foreign nationals.
To obtain a permit, keep the following handy –
- Itinerary – dates of travel, mode of transport, name of the package if applicable, a break-down of the time spent at each island, accommodation
- Name, age, gender, nationality
- Police clearance certificate (PCC). Contact your local police station and state that you require a PCC for Lakshadweep. Processing could take 10-20 days
- Identification documents (Aadhar card, etc.), and three passport-sized photographs
- Foreign nationals would have to submit copies of their passport and a valid Indian visa in addition to the above
As of March 2022, online applications for entry permits can be submitted.
Processing time – this depends on the type of stay chosen.
- If you opt for a SPORTS package or a SPORTS resort, the processing time is up to 2 working days after submission of all documents and full payment. Permits for those who’ve booked staying packages will be issued within 7 days of the journey.
- If you opt for a private hotel, resort or homestay, the processing time is 15- 20 working days after submission of all documents and full payment.
Tip: Booking a SPORTS package or SPORTS resort accommodation via a travel agent will minimise the documents required for the permit (no PCC required) and reduce the time taken to process the application.
What to Wear and Pack
For the most part, pack everything you usually would if you were travelling to any other beach destination. Still, note these important points.
- Cotton shirts, dresses, shorts and pants in light colours. The more covered you are, the better because the sun isn’t always your friend. Also, it’s best to dress modestly
- At least one swimsuit or a pair of swimming trunks. Bikinis are not allowed, except in Bangaram and Thinnakara
- A cap or a wide-brimmed hat
- Polarized sunglasses
- Flip-flops or beach sandals. I also carried a pair of aqua shoes to prevent cuts from stepping on corals
- While the resorts provide towels, I carried my own quick-dry towel, which doubled as a bathing suit cover-up and as a blanket for evenings on the beach
Personal Care
- Carry sunscreen, and reapply every 2 to 3 hours. I packed my trusted Earth Rhythm SPF 50 PA ++++ for the face and Biotique SPF 75 UVA/UVB Lotion for the body
- The resorts provide basic soap, so carry your own toiletries like toothbrushes, toothpaste, face wash, shampoo, conditioner, and body lotion
- A first-aid kit with antiseptic liquid/cream, cotton, band-aids, bandages and pills is always good to have, even though resorts may have a kit of their own. I found a dearth of supplies when I was bitten by a fish during a dive in Kavaratti
- Wet wipes and tissues for mid-journey refreshing
Wallet and documents
- Boarding pass, entry permit, accommodation and itinerary documents, ID proof, COVID vaccination proof, and passport with valid visa (for non-Indian nationals)
- Cash in Indian rupees
- A universal travel adapter for foreign nationals
- Smartphone, charger, earphones
- A portable charger, if you will be using your smartphone heavily for photography.
- A waterproof phone pouch to protect your phone from water
- A DSLR or a point-and-shoot camera, and a GoPro with a hand grip for underwater photography. Else the dive centres will share their footage with you.
- I carried my Kindle along, for reading by the beach – a blessing for solo travellers.
Refreshments
- Snacks for transits and day trips.
- Lakshadweep follows a no-plastic bottle policy. Your stay will provide drinking water in glass bottles. Carry your own water bottle and refill it.
Lakshadweep Travel Budgeting
Lakshadweep is at a considerable distance from mainland India. This alone drives up costs since supplies need to come from Mangalore or Kochi. The prices are also kept on the higher side to regulate the number of tourists that visit Lakshadweep – it’s why accommodation in Bangaram is relatively expensive. If you’re looking at Lakshadweep as a shoe-string budget destination, you might want to rethink your plans.
That said, a well-rounded trip to Lakshadweep within a sensible budget can definitely be planned.
Note: All costs are averages of estimates for one person, and are based on own expenses and available online data. Actual costs may be higher than indicated.
Travel and Transit costs

Budget Tips for Lakshadweep
Here are my hacks to save some big bucks when you travel to Lakshadweep!
- Planning in advance is key to getting accommodation and the best fares. Use Skyscanner to track dips in airfares.
- If you’re in South India, take a bus or train to Kochi and then fly from Kochi to Agatti. You can also spend a night in Kochi and explore the beautiful Fort Kochi area.
Suggested Read: My guide to making the best of a day or two in Kochi, under a tight budget .
- SPORTS packages offer the best of everything, for every budget. Choose one based on the islands you’d like to visit.
- Avoid staying in Bangaram if you’re on a budget. You can opt for a day trip to Bangaram and return to Agatti, instead of spending the night at Bangaram.
- Avoid travel to Lakshadweep in December, to save 10% on tariffs.
- Travelling in even numbers is cheaper since double room costs are halved, which then cost less than the single room tariff.
- Getting PADI certified in Kavaratti is value-for-money compared to other locations, both within and outside India.
My Lakshadweep Itinerary and Cost
Since this was my first trip post the COVID-19 pandemic, my travel to Lakshadweep was a no-expense-spared, revenge-travel solo journey, one that I absolutely do not regret. 🙂 My original itinerary was only for Minicoy, but I guess the universe had other plans.
My Lakshadweep travel plan included 2 days and 2 nights at Kavaratti, 2 days and 2 nights at Bangaram, and 2 days and 1 night in Agatti since my return flight got cancelled.
- Day 1 – Depart Bangalore via flight and land in Agatti. Sea transfer from Agatti to Kavaratti
- Day 2 – In Kavaratti. Activities included scuba diving, an auto tour of Kavaratti
- Day 3 – Kavaratti to Agatti by boat. Sea transfer from Agatti to Bangaram. Activities in Bangaram included day-trip to Thinnakara
- Day 4 – In Bangaram. Activities included snorkelling at the coral garden and the shipwreck site, a walk to the sandbank to catch the sunset
- Day 5 – Bangaram to Agatti by boat. Spend a night in Agatti due to flight cancellation. Activity included walking around Agatti.
- Day 6 – Depart Agatti via flight, arrive in Bangalore
I spent INR 109,093 all-inclusive – even snacks, shopping and tips. Here’s a break-up of my costs.
What you need to know before you travel to Lakshadweep
Here’s some important information that you need to know before you jet-set-go to Lakshadweep.
- Network and Internet – Only Airtel and BSNL networks work here, with BSNL being stronger. Bangaram and Kavaratti resorts provide free WiFi that’s meh.
- Cash – Don’t rely on digital payments. Carry cash for emergencies, water activities, bar tabs, snacks, and tips.
- Accommodation – No luxuries and swimming pools here. A comfortable stay with clean rooms, basic amenities, and ever-helpful staff is guaranteed.
- SPORTS coordinator – You will be assigned a dedicated SPORTS coordinator who will help with transits and any emergencies.
- Eco-consciousness – Avoid littering and carry your own reusable water bottle. No plastic bottled water here.
- Tap water in Bangaram – Smells strongly of sulphur, Tap water is treated with a sulphur compound, and while completely safe to use for all bathroom needs, it will tarnish metal that’s not real gold. Drinking water has no odour.
- Banned items – Taking back coconuts, corals, shells and vinegar is prohibited.
Lakshadweep FAQs
While its romantic ambience, hushed locales and picturesque beaches certainly aid this notion, Lakshadweep isn’t exclusively for honeymooners any more than Goa is only for teenagers who like to party. There’s something for everyone here – solo travellers, couples, families, friend groups, culture-buffs, and adventure seekers.
Yes, Lakshadweep is family-friendly. Most families with young children prefer to stay in Bangaram because of the ample open space by the beach and the slightly superior quality of stay. Nevertheless, other islands are also suitable for a wholesome family trip.
Yes, it’s safe for solo travellers. The islands have a negligible crime rate, and the people are so wonderful!. Since almost everything is arranged by SPORTS and your travel agent, you will have nothing to worry about, and can safely explore the islands alone. The only ask is to respect the local culture and customs.
Yes, Lakshadweep is extremely safe for women, and I can’t think of a safer place for a woman to travel to. I travelled alone and had an unbelievably safe and comfortable experience throughout.
Bikinis and swimming/sunbathing in the nude aren’t allowed on the inhabited islands of Lakshadweep. You can wear a bikini in Bangaram and Thinnakara.
Being a Muslim-majority location, alcohol possession, consumption and sale is prohibited. There are talks of this changing though. Alcohol is available in Bangaram.
You can definitely plan a budget trip to Lakshadweep, as long as the budget is sensible. Don’t expect a trip to Lakshadweep under INR 20,000. Follow my budget tips shared above to make the best use of your bucks.
Lakshadweep offers phenomenal scuba diving experiences across Agatti, Bangaram, Kadmat, Kavaratti and Minicoy. A PADI Discover Scuba Dive costs just under INR 3,600 per dive, while a PADI Open Water Diver certification costs around INR 22,000. If you’re looking to get PADI certified, Agatti, Kavaratti and Minicoy are some of the best places to do so.
Fresh tuna pickles and tuna powder from Kavaratti or Agatti – yum! In Thinnakara, you can purchase a 1 kg jar of freshly made coconut jaggery, which is delightful!
If your flight is cancelled, get to Agatti, and ask your SPORTS coordinator to help you look for accommodation for the night. Star Alliance’s flight cancellation policy entitles you to an accommodation reimbursement of INR 1,500 per day because Lakshadweep falls within Kochi’s jurisdiction. While you can find accommodation for INR 1,500 per day in Kochi, that’s a no-go in Lakshadweep. Agatti has options from INR 5,000 – your cheapest and best bet.
There’s some unrest in the islands due to developmental plans, talks of privatization, policies to ban beef and lift the alcohol ban, and much more. I will soon write a post talking about all of these points.
Lakshadweep is an island destination that’s waiting to receive its fair share of attention, which it often loses to the likes of Andaman & Nicobar and the Maldives. Filled with marvels at every step of your journey, ones that somehow elevate your spirit yet calm your soul at the same time, a wonderful adventure awaits all who travel to Lakshadweep. This much I promise you. 🙂

Your trip report is very informative and very detailed !!
We are planning to travel later this year and wanted to check how much of a hassle is the PCC in Bangalore ?
You had also mentioned working with someone to do this itenary – is there any downside if we do this ourselves ?
Once again – great work
Thank you for your kind words!
You can get a PCC online (through the Passport Seva portal) or in-person. The in-person route takes a month at most. Online could be faster. Since I went through a trusted travel agent, all my paperwork was done, and quite fast too.
The downside to executing the itinerary planning yourself is the hassle. Lakshadweep tourism is tight – limited people allowed in, limited accommodation options, and everything goes through SPORTS. It’s definitely easier to plan your Lakshadweep trip through a travel agent. I recommend getting your bookings and paperwork done as much in advance as possible.
Hope you have a wonderful time there 🙂
This is very well written.. am already sharing this to everyone i know who’s been asking all sorts of questions on how to plan for travel to our islands. And am really surprised how much information u were able to gather in your short stay here.
Thank you, Sidharth! Most of the information is courtesy of the wonderful people of Lakshadweep – they’re so forthcoming and happy to share so much about their home!

My journey led me to the enchanting Agatti Island in Lakshadweep, and the experience was nothing short of magical. I was immediately captivated by the pristine beauty that unfolded before me. The beaches of Agatti are adorned with soft white sand and surrounded with turquoise waters.
Having personally explored Agatti, I was captivated by its geography, especially the enchanting lagoon that surrounds the island. Picture a lagoon as a shallow, clear-blue playground nestled between the land and the deeper sea, shielded by natural barriers like coral reefs or sandbars. Agatti’s lagoon is like a magical, transparent pool where marine life thrives, creating a stunning underwater world.
Now, let’s talk about corals – these are living organisms that build intricate structures underwater. They come together to form coral reefs, which are like bustling cities beneath the sea. The coral reefs around Agatti are like underwater gardens, bursting with a riot of colors and teeming with fish and other sea creatures. It’s like stepping into a vibrant, underwater wonderland.
Agatti, though a small island, is a haven of tranquility and safety, especially for families with kids. One of the notable features that add to its charm is the absence of rough waves, creating a gentle and serene environment along its shores. This makes the island a particularly safe and enjoyable destination for children, allowing them to play in the shallows with ease.
During my visit, I discovered a myriad of activities tailored for all ages. The calm waters made it perfect for family-friendly adventures, and I took full advantage of the offerings. A glass-bottom boat ride provided a captivating glimpse into the underwater world without getting wet, making it an ideal choice for those wanting to explore the vibrant marine life without diving in.
For a bit of adrenaline, the banana boat ride was an absolute thrill. The island’s tranquil waters transformed into a playground of laughter and excitement as we rode the waves. Snorkeling, another highlight of my Agatti escapade, offered a more immersive experience into the underwater wonders. From vibrant corals to colorful fish, every dip was a journey into an aquatic realm.
Also, one of the question I had before visiting Agatti was whether veg food is available on the island.
Yes, vegetarian food options are available on Agatti Island. While the cuisine in Lakshadweep, including Agatti, is prominently influenced by seafood due to its coastal location, you will find vegetarian dishes as well.
I discovered small stalls offered a variety of vegetarian dishes on the beach, including traditional Indian fare such as rice and dal, veg biryani, and comforting veg 2-minute noodles. From the refreshing taste of coconut water to the crunch of banana chips, these stalls provided a taste of local flavors.

Floating in the clear blue waters of Lakshadweep, snorkeling was an amazing experience for me. I hoped to see a turtle, but unfortunately, I couldn’t spot one. Still, watching the colorful fish and exploring the lively coral gardens was like entering a whole new world beneath the waves.
The water was so clear that every movement of the fish seemed like a dance, and the ocean’s gentle rhythm added to the magic of the moment.
Also, my 9-year-old boy also loved this experience. so can say it is safe for kids.
Also, you do not need to know swimming to try this experience.

Same as Kadmat island, the boat runs only on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, so you need to stay there a minimum of two nights.

Lakshadweep Trip Planning: Your Essential Checklist
Embarking on a journey to Lakshadweep’s idyllic islands is an adventure that promises azure waters and tranquil beaches. But before setting sail, there’s a crucial checklist travellers must tick off to ensure a seamless experience. From travel permits to packing essentials, planning is key to enjoying this tropical paradise to the fullest.
Navigating the intricacies of trip preparation can be daunting, but fear not! They’ve got the ultimate guide to streamline your process. Whether it’s your first visit or you’re a seasoned island-hopper, this checklist will guarantee you’ve covered all bases for an unforgettable Lakshadweep getaway.
Researching Lakshadweep
Before setting sail for the azure waters of Lakshadweep, it’s vital to conduct thorough research to enhance the trip experience. The archipelago’s tropical charm is matched by its unique cultural tapestry and ecological regulations, which tourists should be well-informed about.
The first step in planning is understanding Lakshadweep’s geography . Consisting of 36 islands, each has its own character and set of attractions. Agatti, for instance, boasts a breathtaking lagoon, while Minicoy is famed for its traditional dance forms. Kavaratti serves as the administrative capital and is often the central hub for travellers.
Climate factors play a crucial role in planning a trip to the islands. The best time to visit is from October to May, when the weather is pleasant and conducive to water sports. June to September is monsoon season and can impede travel plans due to rough seas and limited transportation. The islands, being a tropical haven, experience consistent temperatures throughout the year, hovering around 25-35°C.
Potential visitors must also research travel permits . Lakshadweep is a restricted area, and access to foreigners is limited to certain islands. Indian tourists, too, need to acquire an entry permit issued by the Lakshadweep Administration. This can be done with relative ease through an accredited travel agent or by applying directly with the government authorities.
Part of the essential research should include familiarizing oneself with local customs and regulations . The union territory is predominantly Muslim, so respectful behaviour and modest attire are expected. Moreover, the islands are eco-sensitive zones, and numerous activities could be restricted or regulated to protect the delicate coral reefs and marine life. Engaging with local tour operators can provide insight into how to enjoy the offerings responsibly.
Lastly, travellers should scour feedback from previous visitors. Online review platforms and travel blogs can provide valuable tips and highlight any potential pitfalls to be aware of. This feedback loop helps refine itineraries and ensures visitors are well-prepared to embrace Lakshadweep’s splendour.
Deciding on the Best Time to Visit
When planning a trip to Lakshadweep, timing is everything . It’s crucial to consider the climate and seasons to ensure the most comfortable and enjoyable travel experience. The archipelago features a tropical climate, with minimal variations in temperature throughout the year.
The ideal time to visit Lakshadweep is between October and May , when the weather is generally dry and pleasant. During these months, visitors can expect clear skies and calm seas , which are perfect for various water-based activities like snorkelling, diving, and swimming.
- Dry weather
- Clear skies
- Ideal for water activities
However, travellers should be aware that from mid-May to September, Lakshadweep experiences its monsoon season . The monsoons come with heavy rainfall, strong winds, and rough seas, which can lead to cancellations of water sports and ferry services. Consequently, this period is less ideal for tourist activities, although the natural beauty during the rains is a sight to behold for those who don’t mind getting a bit wet.
Peak tourist season in Lakshadweep occurs from December to January. During this time, it’s recommended to book accommodations and travel arrangements well in advance to avoid the rush and ensure availability.
Understanding these weather patterns and their impact on travel plans is essential for visitors. By doing so, they can take full advantage of Lakshadweep’s stunning environment when it is most accessible. Keep in mind that even outside the peak season, the Lakshadweep Islands offer a serene escape, allowing for a more private experience with nature’s wonders.
Obtaining Travel Permits
When planning a trip to Lakshadweep, obtaining the necessary travel permits is a critical step that travellers must not overlook. The region’s unique position as a strategically important territory for India means that access is restricted and foreigners, as well as Indian nationals from other states, need official permission to visit.
The process to obtain a permit involves several key documents including an Identification Proof , a Passport Size Photograph , and details of your proposed travel and accommodation within the archipelago. It’s often easiest to work through an approved travel agent who has experience handling these applications. They can guide you through the application nuances and ensure all paperwork is submitted correctly.
Lakshadweep Tourism offers valuable resources and has the authority to issue the required permits. They provide online services where applicants can apply for a permit and track the status of their application. However, it’s best to start this process well in advance as it can take some time for permits to be processed and approved.
For visitors planning to spend time on specific islands, such as Minicoy or Bangaram, special permits are required as these areas have more restrictions. Note that permits are mandatory both for arriving by air and by sea.
Here’s a quick breakdown of permit application requirements:
- Fully completed application form
- Verified copy of ID proof
- Confirmed accommodation booking
- Itinerary details
Bear in mind that any changes in your travel plan may necessitate a revision of your permit. Therefore, it’s prudent to have your itinerary fairly well-secured before applying. Additionally, when travelling in a group, each member needs an individual permit; there are no group permits, so plan accordingly.
Staying on top of these rules will facilitate a smooth entry into Lakshadweep, letting you focus on the wonders that await rather than getting caught up in bureaucratic hurdles.
Booking Flights and Accommodation
Securing flights and accommodation should be at the top of the travel checklist for anyone planning a trip to Lakshadweep. Given the archipelago’s remoteness, options are limited , and it’s vital to book well in advance to avoid any disappointments. Flights to Lakshadweep are predominantly handled by Air India , operating from Kochi (Cochin) to Agatti Airport, the only airstrip in the region.
When booking flights, travellers should:
- Check for flight availability on their desired travel dates.
- Compare prices across different booking platforms for the best deals .
- Ensure that their travel schedule aligns with their permit approvals.
- Subscribe to airline alerts for any changes in flight schedules or availability.
Accommodation in Lakshadweep ranges from luxury resorts to modest homestays, catering to diverse budgets and preferences. Each island has its own set of places to stay, and some may be more suited to certain types of travellers. For example, Bangaram Island attracts those looking for an exclusive experience while Agatti and Kadmat appeal to budget-conscious and adventure-seeking tourists.
To secure the best accommodation, travellers should:
- Identify their preferred island based on the activities and experiences they seek.
- Research and select accommodation that meets their comfort and budget requirements .
- Contact the properties directly or use reliable travel portals to confirm bookings.
- Regularly review the reservation status and keep in touch with the accommodation provider for any updates.
Remember, the peak season for Lakshadweep is from October to mid-May, making early reservations even more crucial. By ticking flights and accommodation off their list, travellers can focus on the next stages of planning their memorable trip to the tranquil isles of Lakshadweep.
Creating a Packing List
When embarking on a journey to Lakshadweep’s pristine islands, compiling an apt packing list is a task that demands attention. The tropical climate of Lakshadweep calls for lightweight and breathable clothing , ensuring comfort throughout the day. Cotton apparels and linen wears stand out as the preferred choices to combat the humid weather. Given the islands’ sunny disposition, it’s paramount to pack protective gear such as sunglasses, hats, and high SPF sunscreen to shield oneself from the sun’s harsh rays.
Beyond attire, travellers should contemplate the inclusion of essential travel items tailored to island life. This encompasses:
- Swimwear for indulging in the clear waters
- Beach towels and flip-flops for leisurely beach outings
- Waterproof bags to safeguard gadgets and documents
- Snorkelling or diving gear if not intending to rent on the islands
The archipelago’s limited retail options necessitate bringing along personal care products and any specialised medications. It’s wise to carry an adequate supply of:
- Insect repellent
- First-aid kit
- Any prescription meds
Tech-savvy travellers intending to capture Lakshadweep’s beauty should not forget their camera equipment , spare batteries, and memory cards. To stay connected, one must remember to pack relevant charging accessories and possibly a portable power bank , as power outages can occur.
Finally, since plastic is a significant pollutant and banned on several islands, packing eco-friendly materials and ensuring a commitment to sustainability can greatly benefit the delicate island ecosystems. Reusable water bottles, eco-friendly toiletry containers, and biodegradable bags are not just considerate but often necessary choices for conscientious travellers.
Formulating a packing list well ahead of the trip enables travellers to procure any missing items. It also provides ample time for double-checking essentials, thus avoiding last-minute rushes that could lead to overlooking critical things. By ticking off items from a well-planned checklist, one steps closer to a seamless Lakshadweep vacation.
Planning Activities and Itineraries
When venturing to the mesmerising Lakshadweep Islands, it’s crucial to plan activities and itineraries that align with one’s interests and the duration of the stay. The archipelago offers a tapestry of experiences ranging from serene beach relaxation to adrenaline-pumping water sports.
Island Hopping stands out as an indispensable activity. Travellers should research and earmark the islands they wish to explore. Each island boasts its unique charisma–from Minicoy’s distinctive culture to the marine wealth of Kavaratti. Ensuring an efficient route minimizes transit time and maximizes leisure.
For water sports enthusiasts, the Diving and Snorkelling hotspots are a call to adventure. Sites like Agatti and Bangaram are renowned for their crystal-clear waters and vibrant marine life. Pre-booking dive sessions or snorkelling tours with certified instructors is advised to secure prime times and avoid disappointment.
Nature lovers can’t miss Bird Watching and Turtle Nesting Observation excursions. Islands like Pitti and Suheli are sanctuaries for seabirds and the hawksbill and green turtles. Tour operators and local guides provide these experiences, often as part of eco-tourism initiatives that support conservation efforts.
Evenings bring a different vibe with Cultural Performances and Local Cuisine . Sample the flavours of Lakshadweep through culinary delights like octopus fry and coconut-rich gravies. Attend traditional dance and music performances for a glimpse into the islands’ rich heritage.
Lastly, the importance of embracing Eco-Friendly Practices throughout cannot be overstressed. Participate in guided eco-walks or join coral reef conservation workshops to make your travel experience more responsible and rewarding.
Planning activities wisely ensures that travellers can immerse themselves completely in the splendours that Lakshadweep has to offer without being rushed. It’s all about creating a balanced itinerary that weaves together relaxation, exploration, and cultural engagement for an unforgettable island adventure.
Understanding the Local Culture and Customs
When visiting Lakshadweep, it’s crucial to immerse oneself in the local culture and respect the customs of the islanders. Lakshadweep is predominantly inhabited by Muslims, and cultural sensitivity is key. Travellers should dress modestly, especially when visiting inhabited islands or interacting with locals. Women are advised to wear loose-fitting clothes that cover their shoulders and knees, while men should opt for pants and shirts.
Language barriers can be minimal as many islanders speak English, alongside their native language, Malayalam. A few phrases in Malayalam, however, can go a long way in showing respect and can enhance the overall travel experience. Greetings like “Namaskaram” for hello and “Nanni” for thank you are appreciated by the locals and can help build rapport.
Local traditions are deeply rooted in the island’s community life, and visitors might find themselves invited to witness or participate in weddings, religious ceremonies, and local festivals. Eid-ul-Fitr and Milad-un-Nabi are significant religious festivals celebrated with great enthusiasm. Participating in such events allows travellers to gain a deeper understanding of the social fabric of Lakshadweep.
It’s also considerate to ask for permission before taking photographs of people or private homes. This not only shows respect but also provides an opportunity to engage with residents and hear their stories.
For food lovers, Lakshadweep offers a culinary adventure with its seafood-based cuisine influenced by Kerala’s flavours. Tuna is a staple, and dishes like mas riha (tuna curry) and moah appam (sweetened rice cake) are must-tries. Being mindful of eating etiquettes such as washing hands before and after meals and waiting for the host to invite you to start eating is part of the cultural experience.
It’s essential to note that alcohol is prohibited on all islands except Bangaram. As a sign of respect for local laws and traditions, travellers are urged to adhere to this regulation strictly.
While blending in with the local way of life, tourists should also be aware of the environmental impact they may have. Sustainable practices such as not disturbing the coral reefs , opting for eco-friendly tour operators, and reducing plastic usage are ways to ensure the preservation of Lakshadweep’s pristine beauty for future generations.
Staying Safe and Healthy
When planning a trip to Lakshadweep, staying safe and healthy should be at the top of the checklist. Travel insurance is a must-have as it ensures that visitors can receive medical attention if needed without incurring astronomical costs.
Before embarking on their journey, travellers should schedule a visit with their healthcare provider to discuss vaccinations and medications . Essential vaccines include those for Hepatitis A and Typhoid, both of which are preventable diseases common in various parts of India.
Malaria is not a major concern in Lakshadweep, but it’s wise to take precautions against mosquito bites that may transmit other diseases. Using insect repellent and wearing long-sleeved clothing, especially during evening hours, are effective strategies to avoid bites.
Handling Emergencies
In case of an emergency, it’s important to know that medical facilities in Lakshadweep are limited. Agatti Island has the most advanced medical infrastructure, followed by the facilities in Kavaratti . For serious medical concerns, evacuation to the mainland is usually necessary, hence the emphasis on having robust travel insurance.
Food and Water Safety
To maintain health during the stay, travellers should be cautious about food and water consumption. Stick to bottled or filtered water, and ensure that seafood is well-cooked before consumption. While the local cuisine can be exotic and inviting, they should listen to their bodies and avoid any food that may not sit well with them.
Sun and Heat Protection
The sun in Lakshadweep can be particularly strong. Visitors should regularly apply a high-SPF sunscreen, and stay hydrated to prevent heatstroke. Wearing a hat and seeking shade during peak sun hours can also help in keeping cool and safe from heat-related illnesses.
By staying informed and prepared, visitors can ensure that their health does not interfere with the enjoyment of Lakshadweep’s beautiful landscapes, vibrant culture, and underwater wonders.
Managing Finances and Currency Exchange
When travelling to Lakshadweep, it’s crucial to manage one’s finances efficiently. Currency exchange should be at the top of any traveller’s checklist. Indian Rupees (INR) are the acceptable currency on the islands, and it’s advised to exchange currency before arrival as options on the islands are limited.
Travellers should notify their bank of the upcoming travel to avoid any card transactions being flagged as fraudulent. It’s also sensible to inquire about international transaction fees as these can add up quickly.
ATMs are sparse and can be found only in a few locations such as Kavaratti and Agatti. Ensuring that one has enough cash for the duration of the stay is essential since many local establishments do not accept credit or debit cards.
For added security, carrying traveler’s cheques can be a good backup. However, they might not be as easily accepted as cash, so it’s advantageous to have a variety of payment options available.
Budgeting for the trip includes the understanding that costs in Lakshadweep may be higher than on the mainland due to transportation fees of goods. Planning a daily budget helps to keep spending in check and ensures that travellers can enjoy their visit without the stress of financial surprises.
- Notify bank of travel plans
- Exchange currency pre-arrival
- Research international fees
- Carry enough cash
- Consider traveler’s cheques
- Budget for heightened island costs
By taking these financial steps in preparation, visitors can avoid potential hassles, allowing them to immerse themselves in the tranquility of the archipelago with peace of mind.
Embarking on a journey to the serene islands of Lakshadweep requires thoughtful preparation. With the right financial planning and awareness of the limited banking facilities, travellers can ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. Remembering to exchange currency beforehand and alerting your bank to your travel plans are crucial steps that shouldn’t be overlooked. By tackling these essentials early on, you’re set to immerse yourself in the beauty of Lakshadweep without the worry of monetary mishaps. So pack your bags, prepare your finances, and get ready for an unforgettable island adventure.

Lakshadweep Travel Guide: Tips to Plan a Perfect Trip
Lakshadweep, the smallest Union Territory of India, has recently gained attention from travellers.
When I explored Lakshadweep in 2022 with friends for a week, it felt like a hidden gem. The white sandy beaches and turquoise water amazed me. Hardly there were any tourists on these islands.
However, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited in January 2023 and promoted it as an alternative to the Maldives, interest soared.
Then onwards, Lakshadweep trip is on almost every India’s bucket list. But here is a catch
Unlike other Indian destinations, you can’t just book a flight and go. Many people abandon their plans due to complex travel requirements of Lakshadweep.
My friends and I faced the same issue. Initially, some preferred Goa over the hassle of Lakshadweep.
Convincing them was tough, but we were glad we went. The natural beauty, coral life, and sunsets with fewer tourists made it worth the effort.
This Lakshadweep travel guide covers tips related to permits, transportation, trip costs, and the best accommodation.
Table of Contents
Is it worth it to go lakshadweep.
Absolutely, Lakshadweep is worth it! Just 10 metres from the white sandy shore, you can snorkel in the Arabian sea blue waters and spot vibrant coral and clownfish.
The islands are tiny, so you’re always near the sea, and with fewer tourists, the place is beautifully preserved.
The nearest mainland of India is 400 km from Lakshadweep! So, imagine how secluded it feels─a group of islands in the Arabian Sea.
With a population of 68.5k as of 2024, it feels like there are more coconut trees than humans on the Lakshadweep islands. The islands are so sparsely populated that you start recognising the local residents after your first four days, and they greet you with a broad smile.
Our scuba instructor Naushad mentioned that the island region is home to 856 species of fish. When I went diving, the only one I could recognise was Nemo, the clownfish, among what seemed like 100 other fish.
The tiny island has a rich historical significance too. You must talk to locals who know their place well.
They can share fascinating historical facts, like how Lakshadweep was nearly occupied by Pakistan , the story of a Muslim saint from Mecca who came here, and the connections between the island with Kochi, and Mysore!
British even called it “Laccadives”
If you want to spend a splendid time by the cleanest beaches in India at a pocket-friendly place, you must travel to this less-visited gem.
The island is least affected with mass tourism – you don’t find international cuisines here. Well if you speak to yourhost, they cook delicious local food with their fresh caught fish !
You travel to Lakshadweep to chill, have relaxed days, mingle with locals without a a rigid plan, visit islands, experience local culture and festivals, eat a lot – But keep it easy here.
Best Time to Visit Lakshadweep
The best time to visit Lakshadweep is from October to March 2nd week. The weather is cool and pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 27–32°C. For the best marine life experience, visit between September and May, when the sea is calm, and visibility is at its peak for scuba diving and snorkelling .
I visited in January, and the weather was perfect with sunshine and a gentle breeze. The days were sunny without heat waves, and the evenings were breezy, turning the sky into a beautiful purplish-blue at twilight.
Even though Lakshadweep has become more famous, the crowd is regulated. If you prefer a “no other humans” holiday, avoid the 10-day Dussehra holidays in October, the 4-day Diwali break in November, and the last week of December – That is when Lakshadweep tourism reaches the peak.
Any other time from October to March is usually less crowded.
How many days are required to visit Lakshadweep?
You need a minimum of four days to see the main islands in Lakshadweep. Seven days is ideal, and tourists are allowed to stay for a maximum of seven days on the islands.
When planning your Lakshadweep trip, create your itinerary for four to seven days depending on how long you can spend there. This allows enough time to explore multiple islands, enjoy various water activities, and soak in the natural beauty.
Lakshadweep Travel permits for tourists
According to the rules, anyone who is not a native of Lakshadweep must obtain a permit from the competent authority before entering and living on the islands – Including every Indian citizen.
Foreign nationals on tourist visas are allowed to enter Lakshadweep, but those on business or work visas are prohibited from entering the islands.
It is important to apply for permit at least a month in advance as they take minimum 15 days to process the permit.
Is passport required for Indian nationals to enter Lakshadweep??
No, Indian nationals do not require a passport to enter Lakshadweep. However, they do need to obtain an entry permit issued by the Lakshadweep Administration using any other National ID such as Aadhar or Driving licence.
Which Islands can you visit in Lakshadweep after getting the permit
Lakshadweep consists of 36 islands, but only a few are open to tourists to protect the interests of the local population and maintain security, as it is a vital naval base. With permits, tourists can visit specifics Agatti, Bangaram, Kadmat, Kavaratti, and Minicoy islands ( Minicoy is about 300 km from Agatti). Most other islands remain off-limits to preserve their natural and cultural integrity.
Where to apply for a Lakshadweep travel permit
You can get your Lakshadweep travel permit in three ways: online portal, registered travel agent, or manual submission.
- Online Portal: The most cost-effective way to get permits.
- Registered Travel Agent: You can book accommodation, boat tours, and island transfers with travel agents. They act as “sponsors” and handle your permit process upon payment. You need to submit a list of documents to them.
- Manual Submission: Download the application form, fill it out, and submit it at the Kavaratti office or the Lakshadweep Administration Office in Kochi. This method is impractical for those who are not in Kochi!
It is best to apply for a permit via a registered travel agent or online at least a month in advance.
We recommend going through a travel agent who arranges sponsor documents, books hotels, and gets your permit easier than struggling with the online application.
Best Lakshadweep travel agents.
Out of at least 50 available agents, we opted for Chediyar Holidays , a local Lakshadweep travel agency and surely they are one of the best on the islands. Unlike other agencies we contacted via Instagram, Sameer from Chediyar Holidays was swift in responding and professional. They know what they are doing.
Upon giving them the documents listed below, they arranged for the permits swiftly without any hassle.
List of Documents Required to Apply for Lakshadweep Travel Permit:
- Identity Proof: Passport, masked Aadhaar, Voter ID, or driving licence (any one).
- Recent passport-sized photograph (white background, frontal view).
- Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) or Non-Involvement in Offence Certificate: This certificate verifies that you do not have any criminal records. Obtain the PCC from your local police authority or through the online portal of your state (if available).
- Declaration of the Sponsor: A formal declaration from your sponsor (either SPORTS official government Lakshadweep tour package provider or a private tour operator) stating their sponsorship for your visit. We got it from the private tour operator Chediyar Holidays , with whom we booked rooms.
- Details of Sponsor: Ration card number and their agreement to sponsor your stay. Once you pay through SPORTS or a tour operator, they hand over these details automatically.
- Hotel or resort booking details provided by the sponsor.
- Flight tickets or cruise confirmation tickets.
How to Apply for Lakshadweep Permits Online
You can apply for a Lakshadweep permit online by signing up and filling in your details on the ePermit portal .
It is a bit of a tedious process, which we tried initially and found overwhelming, so we opted for the travel agent option.
However, follow these steps if you want to get your permit on ePortal:
- You need an email ID and phone number to which you will be sent an OTP while signing up.
- Choose “Others” as the “Purpose of Visit.”
- Fill in the form and upload asked documents
- Choose your island and travel dates,
- Pay the fees, and voilà ! Your permit will be emailed to you 15 days before your trip.
Processing Time and Fees
The application process takes about 15 days and costs ₹250 per adult and ₹150 per child aged 12 to 18. This fee is split into ₹50 for the application and the remaining amount as a heritage fee. Usually, they release the permit 15 days before your departure time.
Getting to Lakshadweep
You can get to Lakshadweep by either flight or cruise.
Whether you take a cruise or a flight, Kochi in Kerala is your starting point. Only a few Indian cities have direct flights to Lakshadweep, so plan to land in Kochi first.
Combining a Lakshadweep holiday with a few days in Kochi is a great idea. Fort Kochi is a fantastic town with great food and streets filled with colonial architecture and traditional Malabar buildings. Spend 3 to 4 days here before flying or taking a ship/ferry to Lakshadweep.
Flights to Lakshadweep
Lakshadweep is accessible via the Agatti Aerodrome, the only airport in the region. The mainland area itself is 32 sq km, so having an airport in such a small place is remarkable.
Many Indian domestic airlines operate flights to Agatti Airport mainly from Kochi. I always prefer Indigo for domestic travel in India and recommend the same. Irrespective of the carrier, only small-sized aircraft fly to Agatti. The short-haul regional airlines with less than 80-passenger capacity serve this route.
Heads up : Be careful while booking flights to Kochi airport, check for the airport code COK. There is another Kochi in Japan, which can be confusing at times.
Sea Routes to Lakshadweep
You can also opt to travel to Lakshadweep via cruise if you don’t mind a more expensive option. Cruises depart from various places like Mumbai, Goa, and Kochi. Cordelia Cruise is the major company offering Lakshadweep cruise packages. If you prefer a bit of luxury and touristy comfort, a cruise might be a good choice.
If you don’t want to fly from Kochi and find cruises too expensive, you can take a ferry from Willingdon Island in Kochi to Agatti Island via Kavaratti. The journey takes about 19 hours and 10 minutes and runs once a week. Be prepared for the long journey, but it’s a cost-effective way to reach.
Personally, neither Sahana nor I enjoy cruises; we find them too touristy and prefer meeting locals on land. So, it’s not my recommended way to travel to Lakshadweep.
Getting Around Lakshadweep Islands
Ferries and private boats are the main ways to get around Lakshadweep. For a quicker, more scenic and expensive option, you can think of a helicopter ride also.
Inter-Island Travel
As an island region, boats and ferries are the main way to hop between islands. Regular services connect places like Agatti, Kavaratti, and Minicoy. Ferries are a common mode of transport with fixed schedules known well by locals.
However, it’s best for tourists to take private boats between islands. These tours are affordable, and local boat captains ensure safety and flexibility. You can even invite fishermen to join, who might cook fresh fish right on the boat.
On Lakshadweep Islands
On the islands, getting around is easy on foot. The largest island, Andrott, is just 4.9 sq km, Agatti is 3.84sqkm, while Bangaram is 1.3 sq km. You really won't need any vehicle to explore the islands.
However, just for leisure, if you become friends with locals and offer a little money, you can rent a jeep for a few hours! I even rode one of the fishermen's bikes.
I really wish they would introduce bicycles for rent soon─it would be lovely to tour the islands through the coconut groves.
How to get from Lakshadweep airport to other islands?
From Agatti you have two options to get to other islands: take scheduled ferries or hire a private boat.
To take scheduled ferries, you must get a taxi or rickshaw outside the airport to the boat jetty, which is 5 km away. Then, buy tickets for the next available ferry to your island and wait for an hour or more, depending on the ferry schedule.
On the other hand, if you opt for island-to-island transfers offered by your accommodation like we did, it is much easier.
They meet you at the airport, take you by car or rickshaw to the jetty, and you are on your private boat going to your island within minutes after landing in Agatti.
Boat Duration from Agatti to different islands
- Agatti to Bangaram: 30 to 45 minutes
- Agatti to Kadmat: 2 to 3 hours by speed boat
- Agatti to Kavaratti: 2.5 hours by speed boat
- Agatti to Thinnakara: 2 hours by boat
Best Accommodation in Lakshadweep
The accommodation options in Lakshadweep are plenty. However, you may not find the variety available in other beach towns of India. Homestays and beachside resorts are common. Most are privately owned, while others are owned by the government.
Out of 36 islands, visitors are allowed to stay on only five: Agatti, Kadmat, Kavaratti, Bangaram, and Minicoy. Minicoy is kind of off limits because it is about 300 km from Agatti.
Each accommodation on every island is situated on white sandy beaches, and you’ll be just a few steps away from the blue waters of the Arabian Sea.
None of the resorts or homestays in Lakshadweep are listed on booking.com or Agoda. To book rooms, you must approach a travel agent or visit the hotels’ official websites (if available).
How to pick which island to stay in Lakshadweep?
When picking an island in Lakshadweep, consider the conveniences you seek, like restaurants and shops. All islands offer natural beauty, white sands, and water activities like scuba diving and snorkeling. Some islands are more inhabited with better amenities.
Agatti: A 7.6 km island with Airport. Ideal for swimming, scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, cruising, and kayaking. Plenty of restaurants, private resorts, and homestays – Despite having accommodations the island is full of locals. There are no government guesthouse here, everything is owned by locals. We stayed in Kasims Beach Villa right on the beach and closer to diving sites – It was a perfect stay.
Kadmat ( 2-3hr boat ride from Agatti).: A 9.3 km long island Few accommodation options. Well-inhabited with a bank, post office, and university. Offers kayaking, snorkeling, and scuba diving. Check Kadmat Beach Resort , the most famous of all resorts in Kadmat.
Kavaratti (2.5 hr boat ride from Agatti): The capital of Lakshadweep with beautiful lagoons for water sports. Notable mosques (Jamnath, Mohidden, Ujra), an aquarium, a museum, and the Dolphin Dive Centre. Accommodations near the jetty with comfortable huts. Check UT Guest House
Thinnakara (2hr boat ride from Agatti) : Secluded island known for tents for accommodation.
Bangaram: The most secluded and uninhabited island with 60 bedded beach cottages, a multi-cuisine restaurant, and the only island with a bar. Bangaram resort is the only option.
Which island is best to stay in Lakshadweep?
Agatti is definitely the best island to stay in Lakshadweep. Since the airport is right there, you don't have to worry about arranging island transfers. Agatti has plenty of accommodation and restaurants, but it's not overcrowded with tourists. You'll still feel like you're in the lap of nature with all the coconut trees around.
Plus, you are just a few metres away from some of the best scuba diving spots in Lakshadweep if you stay in Agatti. It's also easier to hop to other islands from here.
It is amazing to spend time with locals by the beach side at Agatti.
Cost of a Lakshadweep Trip
A Lakshadweep trip costs anywhere between ₹4000 to ₹6,000 per day per person. This includes entry permits, a standard beach villa room, three meals, private boat rides between islands (cost shared by six of us), one scuba dive, unlimited snorkeling at various spots, and kayaking. Flight expenses are excluded from this budget. This budget depends on the number of people in your group and kind of accommodations you choose.
Since we were a group of six, the private boat cost was shared among all. If you are only two in a group, the Lakshadweep trip budget will be higher.
Practical Travel Tips for Lakshadweep
Permits : Don't plan your Lakshadweep trip without getting permits.
Language : Malayalam is the most spoken language, but many can understand Hindi, and signboards are in English.
Travel Light: Pack light, breathable clothing suitable for humid weather.
Swimwear: Bring your own; there are hardly any shops for beach clothing.
Modest Clothing: Although it’s common to see men in swim shorts and women in swimsuits on the beaches, wear modest clothing in town. It is a Muslim-majority region, and locals tend to cover their bodies fully.
Connectivity: Internet can be spotty, so plan accordingly.
Mobile Network: BSNL and Airtel are the only available networks in Lakshadweep. While BSNL works perfectly, my Airtel network was weak and almost non-functional.
Activities: Book water sports and diving sessions early to ensure availability during Lakshadweep tourism peak season
Local Transport: Public boats wait until they’re full, so be patient or consider hiring a private boat
Cash: Carry enough cash; ATMs are limited.
Currency Exchange: Foreign travellers should exchange their currency to Indian rupees at Kochi before leaving for Lakshadweep.
Alcohol: Allowed only on Bangaram Island and banned on all other islands.
Respect Nature: Avoid littering and respect local wildlife.
Corals and Stones: Picking up corals and bringing any sort of stones from islands is banned. You will be checked for it at Agatti airport.
Safety: Lakshadweep has nearly no crime, making it one of the safest places in India for all kinds of travellers. However, be cautious as you would be in any other safe region across the world.

Thank you for this ,,,,planning to visit in oct last week …..wanted to know if I can visit there for 4days without opting Any package ??
Hi Vijay. Yes, you can. In that case, you must apply for a permit by yourself on their official website. The accommodations are pretty cheap. After checking with your accommodation provider, you can hire boats (that is the only way to travel between tiny islands). Keep an eye on boat time tables
That’s a pretty nice and engaging blog, I have read a few since I am planning to visit this place in November. I would be obliged if you can guide me further. Hello Uday. I am glad you found it useful. Yes you read it right – I checked with the person who organised the boats there. You can get in touch with them and they will let you know better – https://www.instagram.com/chediyarholidays/ So, it was a flight to and from Kochi to Lakshadweep. Then the rest is only by boat – It is more fun with local fishermen that way!

"One Hundred Thousand Islands"
Lakshadweep tourism.
Formerly known as Laccadive Islands, Lakshadweep translates to 'one hundred thousand islands' in Malayalam. Home to a few of the most beautiful and exotic islands and beaches of India, Lakshadweep lies 400km off the southwest coast of the Arabian Sea. The smallest union territory of India has 36 islands having a total area of 32 sq. kilometres. It's made up of 12 atolls, 3 reefs and 5 submerged banks out of which ten Islands are inhabited. The main attraction of Lakshadweep lies in its stunning coral reefs, making it a haven for snorkeling, scuba diving, and other water sports enthusiasts. The islands are also famous for their rich cultural heritage, with influences from Indian, Arab, and European traditions.
Lakshadweep is typically accessed from Kochi (Kerala) and a permit is required to visit Lakshadweep for all tourists (including Indians). After permit, foreigners are permitted to just visit Agatti, Bangaram and Kadmat Islands. Permits can be obtained from Kochi itself. Permits are exempted to government officials, armed force members, and their families who are either working or visiting these islands. Additionally, embarking on the Lakshadweep Samudram Cruise aboard MV Kavaratti is a maritime adventure like no other. This 5 day cruise takes you Kavaratti, Minicoy and Kalpeni islands. Another such extraordinary 5-day voyage is from Mumbai to Lakshadweep on the Cordelia Cruise.
The islands are also known for their delicious seafood cuisine, featuring fresh catches from the surrounding waters. Visitors can indulge in local delicacies such as grilled fish, prawn curry, and coconut-infused dishes, offering a tantalizing culinary experience. In addition to water sports and culinary delights, Lakshadweep also boasts a rich cultural heritage worth exploring. Visitors can visit traditional island villages, interact with local communities, and learn about the unique customs and traditions of the region. The islands are also home to several historic sites and monuments, including ancient mosques and temples, showcasing the diverse cultural influences that have shaped Lakshadweep over the centuries. Perhaps the charm of Lakshadweep islands lies in their remoteness. Far off the beaten track, they attract no hordes of merrymakers to their shores. The islands, though all equally mystical and beautiful, each offers a unique blend of tourist spots. Some islands have been promoted for diving and water sports, still, others have been developed so that people enjoy the charm of relaxation.
Must Know Before You Travel to Lakshadweep
Permits: In accordance with the Rules of Restriction on Entry and Residence for Laccadive, Minicoy, and Amindivi Islands established in 1967, individuals who are not native to these islands are required to acquire a permit in the prescribed form from the competent authority to enter and reside there. Exceptions to this rule include government officials, armed force members, and their families who are either working or visiting these islands. Here's more information on Permits for Lakshadweep .
However, since the rules for permits keep changing in this area, it’s advisable that one consults a travel agent before filling out the said application forms to be on the safer side.
Monsoon Season Closure : Lakshadweep experiences a monsoon season from May to September, during which ferry services and water activities may be suspended due to rough seas and inclement weather conditions.
Pre-booking accomodation: It is recommended to book accommodations in advance as Lakshadweep has limited lodging options available.
Caution Against Touts : Beware of touts offering fraudulent tour packages or misleading information about accommodations and activities. Always verify with official sources or reputable tour operators.
Limited Transport Options : Ferries between islands may have limited schedules and availability. Check ferry timings and book tickets in advance to ensure smooth travel between islands.
Network Connectivity : Mobile network coverage may be limited or unavailable on some islands. Carry a local SIM card from reliable operators for better connectivity.
Online Booking Advantage : Consider purchasing ferry tickets and tour packages online, as they may be cheaper and more convenient than buying them in person or from kiosks.
Cash Dependency : ATMs are scarce on the islands, and credit card acceptance may be limited. Carry sufficient cash in Indian Rupees for your expenses during your stay.

Planning a trip to Lakshadweep? Here’s all you need to know
With tourism interests in lakshadweep being at an all time high, here’s a curated list of all that you need to know–travel, permit, stay, and activities–to plan your itinerary better..
Saturday January 13, 2024 , 5 min Read
Tucked 406 km off the Malabar coast, Lakshadweep is truly a hidden gem. With pristine beaches and crystal clear waters, it is one of the five places in India with coral reefs.
Despite offering breathtaking views with the perfect mix of culture and heritage, Lakshadweep remained a road less travelled. In fact, the island was given the National Ecotourism Award in 1997.
However, with entry restrictions, limited air connectivity, and a small airport, the archipelago of 36 islands remained untouched by tourists.
Nevertheless, leading online travel company MakeMyTrip recently reported a 3400% increase in on-platform searches for Lakshadweep. This sudden spike can be attributed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the islands, and the subsequent tension that unfolded on social media.
On January 5, PM Modi posted images on social media of himself enjoying the beaches of Lakshadweep.
“I am still in awe of the stunning beauty of its islands and the incredible warmth of its people. For those who wish to embrace the adventurer in them, Lakshadweep has to be on your list,” he wrote.

While it soon led to a controversy and a diplomatic row between Maldives and India, the smallest union territory of India, spread across only 32 sq kms, garnered attention like never before. According to media reports, flights to Lakshadweep have been sold out until March this year. The Lakshadweep administration also said that it was expecting over Rs 20,000 crore in investments in the coming days to pitch it in the same league as Maldives.
If you are planning a trip to the mesmerising islands soon, YS Life has curated a list of everything you need to know before you plan your itinerary.
How to get there
With the Arabian Sea on the west and Laccadive Sea on the east, Lakshadweep is to be one part of a hundred islands. With Kavaratti as its capital, Lakshadweep comes under the jurisdiction of the Kerala High Court. The island, connected by ships and flights, can only be reached via Kochi.
According to the official website of Lakshadweep, seven passenger ships operate between Kochi and the islands, taking about 14-18 hours, and the charges can range between Rs 2,200 to Rs 7,500, per person.
A more convenient mode of transportation is opting for a flight. Only one Alliance Air operates between Cochin International Airport and Agatti Airport, the only airstrip in Lakshadweep. The 1 hr 25 min flight departs at 8: 55 AM and lands at 10: 20 AM. The average cost per person is Rs 5,500.

Irrespective of the mode of transportation, an entry permit is mandatory for not just foreign travellers but also for Indian citizens who are not a native of the union territory, to enter the islands. Travellers can obtain a permit online through the ePermit portal. Indians need to get an entry permit by providing their name, address, date and place of birth, preferred islands that they wish to visit, and travel dates. Indians can visit all the islands of Lakshadweep.
Foreign nationals also need to provide their passport and visa details, besides the entry permit. However, foreigners are only permitted in the islands of Agatti, Bangaram and Kadmat islands. with a valid passport and visa will only be allowed to visit Kadmat, Minicoy and Thinnakara, after due permission from administrators.
One also needs to keep in mind that only a certain number of tourists are allowed in the islands at any given time. It is therefore necessary to make all the bookings in advance.
Best time to visit
The peak season to visit Lakshadweep is between October and February, with temperature ranging between 22 and 30 degree Celsius. The mornings are sunny and nights are breezy–ideal for a summer beach vacation.
While it is warmer between March and May, with temperatures soaring above 32 degree Celsius, the evenings can be calmer and the skies clearer. June to September are off season due to heavy rainfall that make travelling across the islands extremely challenging.
Where to stay
Of the 36 islands, only 10 are inhabited. The most popular ones include Minicoy, Kalpeni, Kadmat, Bangaram and Thinnakara.
Lakshadweep's charm lies in its rustic beach-way of life. And the dearth of tourism in the islands never triggered the luxury hotel chains to give Lakshadweep enough attention. Recently after the India-Maldives row, the Tata Group announced its intention to set up two Taj branded hotels on the Suheli and Kadmat islands by 2026.
Kalpeni Island in Lakshadweep
For tourists planning a trip between now and then, the options for accommodation are limited to local beach resorts spread across Agatti, Kadmath, Minicoy and Bangaram.
What to do
The largest island, Andrott is the closest to the Indian mainland and is popular for the remains of ancient Buddhist archaeology.
Agatti, the only island with an airport, is spread across 3.3 sq km, overlooking a 25 km lagoon. It is ideal for sunbathing, taking a stroll along the beach, and indulging in water activities such as snorkelling and scuba diving to experience the vibrant sea life up and close.
Minicoy, the second largest island and one closest to the 90 Channel–the busiest shipping port in the Arabian Sea, offers silver sand beaches. It is best to go scuba diving here to witness the coral reefs.

Kavaratti, the capital city, is the most developed island. It is home to 52 mosques and the marine museum. Lined with white coral sands, it is worth visiting the islands of Kadmath, Kiltan, Chetlat, Kalpeni, Amini, and Thinnakara.
Kadmat has also emerged as one of the most beautiful dive centres in India. It is a haven for water sports including scuba diving, windsurfing, snorkelling, surfing, water skiing, and yachting.
Having said that, #ExploreIndianIslands does not just limit one to Lakshadweep. If you wish to discover and experience India beyond the usual, check this list by YS Life .
