Oak Alley Plantation

Just up the river from Laura is the “Grande Dame” of the Louisiana River Road plantations, Oak Alley plantation gets its name from the spectacular quarter mile tunnel of 28 oak trees that frame the driveway as you approach. Built in 1839 and facing the Mississippi River, the magnificent entrance to Oak Alley Plantation makes it a “Must See” destination on everyone’s list of historic Louisiana sites. 

Whitney Plantation

The Whitney Plantation stands out by honoring the slaves who built it. Visitors can tour “The Big House,” Slave Quarters, Wall of Honor memorial, Antioch Baptist Church, and other exhibits. Established in the early 1700s by a German immigrant, the plantation thrived due to slave labor, producing over 400,000 pounds of sugar at its peak. Today, it serves as a memorial to the enslaved individuals who sacrificed their lives.

I would definitely recommend Cajun Encounters!! The booking process was super easy. We were picked up on Canal St. by our bus driver Derek. He was very sweet, funny and I love how he talked about some of the history in New Orleans. (Especially being a first timer.) Capt. Jacob did an amazing job with our swamp tour. He was very knowledgeable and experienced at what he does. I would do it all over again!

Captain Randy was absolutely fantastic! Despite getting caught in the rain, we had the time of our lives laughing hysterically throughout the entire ride. It added such a fun and unexpected element to our experience. Even though we didn't have the covered boat, we wouldn't have had it any other way - we truly had a blast. Justina, our bus driver, was so upbeat and provided a tour filled with interesting facts and information...

Absolutely loved this tour. Scott the Swamp Manager was outstanding. His boat handling skills were excellent and his commentary and knowledge of the area was exceptional. It would have meant nothing without the commentary. The health and safety considerations were a very high standard but we all had fun. He was considerate to other boats in the area and gave us very full information about the whole area.

Loved my experience! Captain Jacob was so informative and passionate about the swamp and all the beauty it held! I went for my birthday hoping to see Alligators and truly enjoy the scenery and sure enough that’s exactly what we did! We even went to the exact Bayou that was photographed to create my favorite movie (The Princess & The Frog). Even the car ride to the swamp that we coordinated with Cajun Encounters...

Absolutely amazing tour!! From start to finish, the whole experience was smooth and comfortable. Chances are very high you will see an Alligator on our tours. Especially, in the warmer months. The alligators in our swamps are wild creatures so we can’t guarantee an Alligator spotting.

Even in New Orleans, you’re only a short drive away from some incredible natural scenery, and that’s what this particular hike features. Located just across the Causeway, this amazing nature center in Mandeville has some truly spectacular hikes that lead to the most unforgettable destinations. You’ll find the Northlake Nature Center in Mandeville, across from Fontainebleau State Park.

Nestled along scenic Bayou Castine, the trails at this 400-acre center will lead to the most unforgettable destinations.

There are more than eight miles of trails to explore at the nature center, each one offering incredible scenery and the opportunity for wildlife viewing.

Since each trail is less than two miles, you can mix and match to fit your schedule. The interpretive signs and outdoor classrooms make the nature center great for families, too.

Along the way, you’ll catch a glimpse at some of the most beautiful natural scenery in southeastern Louisiana.

You’ll have the opportunity to stroll through three different ecosystems: a pond-swamp, a hardwood forest, and a pine-hardwood forest.

The trail is kid-friendly, dog-friendly as well as wheelchair-friendly, so it’s great for the entire family. The weather has been perfect for an outdoor adventure, so gas up the car and head over to the Northshore to experience this amazing oasis.

Keep Your Eyes Peeled, Thousands Of Hummingbirds Are Headed Right For New Orleans During Their Migration This Spring

Hummingbirds are migrating through New Orleans, and residents can attract them with feeders and specific flowers.

Hummingbirds make two migratory journeys every year: one in the fall and then again in the spring. Their spring migration is already underway and luckily for us, they’ll be stopping by New Orleans as they make their way further north for the breeding season across the United States and into Canada. If you're wondering when will hummingbirds arrive in New Orleans, we've got you covered. The only thing you need to do is prepare one of the best hummingbird feeders for the occasion. Here’s everything you need to know if you’d like to attract these colorful little hummingbirds in New Orleans to your yard:

Measuring anywhere between 3-5 inches long, they’re the smallest birds on the planet, and they might just be the cutest, too.

Because of their small size and quick movement, hummingbirds are easy to miss. But if you're lucky enough to spot one of these babies, it's a magical experience.

Unlike other birds, hummingbirds don’t travel in large flocks and prefer to travel solo. They can travel for up to 500 miles at a time!

When you learn that, their migratory patterns don't seem quite as strenuous.

Each year, they make two annual migrations, and they’re on their way back from their winter in Mexico. Their migration begins in mid-March and continues until the beginning of April.

In recent years the hummingbird migratory patterns have changed slightly. As the weather in North America warms, hummingbirds are coming back to the continent earlier and in some cases spending the winters here.

So, when do hummingbirds come back to New Orleans? As of mid-February 2024, they've already been spotted around the southeastern part of the country.

This means it's go-time for thousands of hummingbirds to make their way north if they're not already here!

There are several different species of hummingbirds.

Each one seems to be more beautiful than the next!

As you spot hummingbirds during the migration, you'll notice lots of different colorings and plumage types. Each hummingbird is unique and they have a wide range of colors in their feathers.

Ruby-throated hummingbirds are the most commonly seen hummingbird here in New Orleans, but you may also catch a glimpse of the Rufous hummingbird, too.

It’s easy to spot the males with their bright red feathers around their throats.

The females, pictured below, are much more subtle.

If you want to attract them to your yard, you’ll need to put some feeders up.

Luckily, it’s pretty easy to DIY your own nectar. All you’ll need is to mix 1 part sugar to 4 parts water and you’ve got the perfect nectar to attract these beautiful little fellas to your yard. Just be sure not to add any food coloring or other unnatural ingredients. You want to keep it as close to their natural diet as possible.

A red feeder is also eye catching for the birds and planting tubular flowers (a preference for the hummingbird) can help attract even more to your backyard. The best time to leave out hummingbird feeders in New Orleans is just before their arrival. However, since some have already been spotted, you better get them out now if you haven't already!
