In this article, I share practical information on the South Queensferry cruise terminal, getting to Edinburgh from this port, and the 10 best things to do in Edinburgh.

Edinburgh Cruise Port at South Queensferry

There are four locations where cruise ships arriving in Edinburgh can dock/anchor:

• South Queensferry – Located 10 miles northwest of Edinburgh city center, S. Queensferry is best known for its picturesque Forth Bridge, a 1.5-mile-long red railway bridge that crosses the Firth of Forth River. The cruise ships anchor in the firth and use tender boats to transfer the passengers to Hawes Pier, from where they can take a shuttle bus to Edinburgh city center.
• Leith – This port is located only 3 miles from Edinburgh and it’s only used for small cruise vessels.
• Newhaven – Cruise ships may also anchor in this harbour located only a 5-minute drive northwest of Leith.
• Rosyth – A port is located 15 miles northwest of Edinburgh, across the Forth Bridge.

South Queensferry is known for its picturesque waterfront, historic buildings, and stunning views of the Forth Bridges. You can reach the town center in a 10-minute walk.

The tender ride takes about 15-20 minutes. Upon arriving at Hawes Pier, you’ll be greeted by the sounds of traditional bagpipes and friendly locals offering free maps and other services.

Getting to Edinburgh from S. Queensferry cruise port

Guests who booked the shore excursions with the cruise ship will meet their tour guides and buses on the right side upon exiting the pier.

On the left side, you’ll see the bus stop for shuttle buses operated by “ Lothian “, a local bus company. Bus X99 runs every 15 minutes and will take you to Edinburgh city center in about 30 minutes’ ride. You can purchase the bus tickets on the pier and the round-trip costs 12£ (price from 2024).

The drop-off point in Edinburgh is on National Cycle Rte 75, within a 5-minute walk from the iconic Scott Monument. Upon returning to the ship, save at least 45 minutes for the bus ride due to the traffic.

Alternative options for getting to Edinburgh from S. Queensferry include the train and taxis. “Dalmeny” train station is located a 10-minute walk from the pier at the top of the hill (110 steps) and trains run twice per hour. The train ride takes 20 minutes and you can check the schedules at the https://www.scotrail.co.uk/ . Hop on Hop off buses may be available in front of the train station.

In Edinburgh, you’ll get off at Waverley Railway Station, located near Princes Street, within a 10-minute walk from the Old Town.

Taxis are also available at Hawes Pier and prices are clearly displayed. The currency in Scotland is the British Pound (GBP). Most places will not accept euros or US dollars, however, credit cards are widely accepted.

If you prefer to book a shore excursion , you can do it through your cruise ship or an independent tour operator. Keep in mind that cruise ship prices can be even up to 3x higher than independent tours’ prices.

From the shuttle bus drop-off point near the Scott Monument, you can easily walk to the city’s main attractions and the iconic Edinburgh Castle. Here’s the list of the best things to do in this incredible city!

1. Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, perched atop Castle Rock and offering stunning views of the city. Steeped in history, this ancient 11th-century fortress served as a royal residence, a military stronghold, and a prison throughout history. Nowadays, it is a world-famous tourist attraction and the second-most-visited castle in the United Kingdom.

The castle is open daily and guided tours are offered. It’s highly recommended to book the tickets in advance, as they sell out far in advance, especially in the summer months.

2. The Royal Mile

You will be anchored and tendered to South Queensferry, within sight of the famous Forth Railway Bridge.

Most cruise lines offer shuttles to the center of Edinburgh (16.90 Euros), but only announce this the night before, so not to disturb their excursion sales.

The ship's shuttle (25 minutes trip) will drop you off at Waterloo Place, just a few steps from the point where all hop on/off buses start. Just past Waverley Station.

The local bus company Lothian run buses right at the quay side into Edinburgh taking approx 35 mins, at a cost of £12.00 each return. They drop you in Saint David`s Street which is very central, this is opposite the Scott Monument, so it is easy to find you way back to pick up the bus.Ticket can be used all day on local buses in Edinburgh.

Taxis have a fixed one way rate per taxi (not per person) for 25 Pound.

Climb a small hill (110 steps!) to the railway station at Dalmeny and spent the day in Edinburgh . Trains are every 20 minutes with a journey time of 15 minutes, and cost just over £8, for a return ticket. The off peak return rail fare from Dalmeny to Edinburgh is £5.80

South Queensferry cruise port

Cruise port South Queensferry

Cruise port South Queensferry is the gateway to Edinburgh. Unfortunately there is no berth large enough to facilitate cruise ships. Therefore cruise ships will have to up the Forth. Anchor in front of the Forth bridge and tender the cruise passengers to shore to a town called South Queensferry. From here you will have multiple option of how to go to Edinburgh.

Tender dock South Queensferry

Tenders will all arrive at a small pier in the Maid of the Forth port underneath the Forth bridge. At the cruise tender pier you will find some taxis, public transportation and shore excursions companies. On the opposite side of the road you will also find some restaurants, cafes and souvenir shops. The walk to South Queensferry city center takes about 10 minutes. Simply go right when you exit the dock.

Going from South Queensferry cruise pier to Edinburgh

You will 4 options to go to Edinburgh from the South Queensferry cruise pier. You can either take an organised shore excursion that you can book on board your ship.

The X99 bus from South Queensferry cruise pier to Edinburg

You can also take the semi public transportation bus called the “X99 Edinburgh” which is a double decker bus that will take you to Edinburghs city center. You will find this bus stop directly on the left hand side as you exit the pier. You buy a ticket at the bus and enjoy a simple ride into the city center. The bus returning to the ship is called X99 Hawes pier.

Take the train from South Queensferry to Edinburgh Waverly

Option number 3 is to take the train into Edinburgh Waverly. 1/2 a mile from the cruise dock you will find the train station called Dalmeny. Please know that it is a bit of a climb to get there as you will start walking at sea level and the train station is up at the start of the bridge. To get to the train station simply follow the signs in the port that point you to it. Which means that when exiting the cruise dock you take a left. The walk is about 10 minutes and from here you catch the train directly to the city center station in Edinburgh which is called Waverly. Trains to Edinburgh depart around twice an hour. Same goes for coming back.

Another option is taking a taxi from the cruise dock to Edinburgh. A one way ride with a taxi that can seat 5 or 6 passengers will cost you around 30 Sterling pound. You can catch the taxi directly at the cruise pier. Simple follow the signs at the exit of the pier. You will find the taxi rank directly to the right hand side, next tot the cruise dock.

Where is located the Port of South Queensferry Cruise Terminal

The harbour is located 18km east of Edinburgh. The ships are anchored in the Forth River and passengers transferred by small boats to Hawes pier in the town of South Queensferry.

Smaller ships can dock at The Ocean Terminal in Leith near the Royal Yacht Britannia.

Travelling around the Edinburgh (South Queensferry) Cruise Port

Dalmeny Train Station is located at the top of the hill. The journey to Edinburgh’s Waverley Station (near Princes Street) is about 20 minutes and the cost is about 4 pounds.

Our Fleet Forth Boat Tours

The Forth Belle

‘The Belle’ is 29 metres (83 feet) in length and is licensed to carry up to 215 passengers. For onboard events we suggest a maximum of 150 for comfort. There is a heated indoor saloon, which also has seating on the lower deck, a covered area on the aft deck.

This provides an excellent space for entertainment and dancing, and open decks fore and aft which provide seating for up to 80 people. ‘The Belle’ has a café/bar and is equipped with its own sound system for live music events. The rear deck can also be converted to a dance floor.

Queensferry Belle

Our vessel is licensed to carry up to 215 passengers. For comfort we limit passenger numbers on our evening cruises and special functions to 120 people.

The glass-roofed heated indoor saloon provides seating for up to 100 passengers. Both forward and aft decks provide additional seating.

Weather-proof seating is provided on the outside decks.

Forth Princess, Scotland’s Dunkirk Veteran

The latest addition to our fleet, the Forth Princess is licensed to carry up to 103 passengers. The indoor saloon provides seating for up to 60 passengers. Weather-proof seating is provided on the outside decks.

On board the Forth Princess there is a café-bar where we have a selection of spirits, bottled and draught beers, teas, coffees and light snacks.

The 2004-built Caribbean Princess cruise ship is the 6th Grand-class Princess Cruises liner, with sisterships Crown , Diamond , Golden (Pacific Adventure) , Grand , Emerald , Ruby , Star (Pacific Encounter) and Sapphire .

The vessel (IMO number 9215490) is currently Bermuda- flagged (MMSI 310423000) and registered in Hamilton .

History - construction and ownership

Princess Cruises is a USA-based passenger shipping company headquartered in Beverly Hills CA. A former subsidiary of P&O Princess Cruises (1977-founded), in 2003, the company merged with Carnival Corporation - the world's largest cruise shipowner. Among Princess Cruise Lines Ltd's assets is the Caribbean private island resort Princess Cays (on Bahamas Eleuthera Island's southern end), located approx 80 km (50 mi) from Nassau .

The 2600-passenger ship Caribbean Princess underwent a major drydock refit in early 2009 when were added facilities available on the younger fleet mates Crown, Emerald and Ruby. Now passengers spend hours sitting in the cosy, patio-style seating places, sipping coffee, reading, playing board games and watching occasional performers, ranging from a Cirque-type cube-spinner to a BMX biker. The new Piazza-Vines Wine Bar is the place to try over thirty wines by the glass while snacking on artisan cheeses, sushi and tapas. Of the changes, the most remarkable and appreciated, is the transformation of the former atrium into a new 3-deck-high, street-cafe-style Piazza - home to the International Cafe (a combination bakery, deli and coffee shop), Vines Wine & Seafood Bar, the Internet Cafe & Library, and an amusement zone.

Decks and Cabins

Most Caribbean Princess staterooms (1569 total, in 34 grades) are 170-ft2 balcony cabins (675). Almost 80% of the outside accommodations have private step-out balconies. Wheelchair-accessible cabins are 25. The largest accommodations are the Grand Suites (615 ft2 / 57 m2 with terrace sized 115 ft2 / 11 m2).

The boat has 18 decks , of which 15 are passenger-accessible and 9 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Caribbean Princess features three dining rooms, all with twinkling lights on their ceilings and tasteful, Caribbean-themed menu. The Palm is for fixed-seating dining, while Island and Coral are for passengers who have chosen "Anytime Dining". Reservations are available but are not required. Coral also welcomes guests for waiter-service breakfast and lunch. Rotating menu options include soups, appetizers, mains and desserts. There are also signature pasta and choices like Caesar salad and salmon. The healthy Lotus Spa selections are low in sodium and fat. Cafe Caribe and Horizon Court look identical and are open all day long. The Horizon section serves as a lido buffet restaurant and features breakfast buffets. Lunch choices may include unusual dishes like peanut butter sandwiches and fried bananas.

In April 2024 Princess Cruises announced that starting September 14th (2024) fleetwide would be introduced 3 distinct main dining/dinner table service options – Traditional, Reservable, and Walk-in Anytime. By the new program (introduced with Sun Princess) on each ship are allocated 3 separate dining rooms - one for Traditional dining (offering early and late dinner seating), one with Reservable times, and one for Walk-in Anytime (open-seating). The new options are integrated with the OceanNow service, allowing anything to be ordered anytime, and delivered anywhere onboard.

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

The Princess Theater is the main venue on Caribbean Princess for comedy acts and production shows with a variety of music and selections appealing to a broad mix of ages. Each of the ship's venues has a different offering. Crooners feature music trivia contests and a pianist. Explorer's Lounge hosts events for everything from Wii sports tournaments to art auctions, plus comedy shows and magicians.

The Piazza offers various demonstrations, circus-lite acts and musical performances throughout the day. 

Club Fusion is a part game show, part nightclub venue. Skywalker Nightclub, Princess' trademark, hosts the 70s-, the 80s- and the 90s-inspired nights and a few nights with a variety of modern music.

For low-key dancing, head to the Wheelhouse Bar, which hosts combos playing standards and soft rock.

Princess Cruises Caribbean ship belongs to company's Grand-class liners ( Fincantieri Monfalcone -built), with (same-designed) sisterships Crown  and  Emerald . The ship is slightly bigger than the other (similarly-designed) Grand-Class liners  Star (now Pacific Encounter) ,  Golden (now Pacific Adventure)  and  Grand . The reason for this is the additional cabin deck (Riviera Deck). The vessel also has no sliding roof to cover the swimming pool area as this liner was planned for exclusively Caribbean itineraries.

Ship's christening ceremony was on April 2, 2004, held in  Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades, Florida) , from where also started the inaugural cruise (maiden voyage). Ship's godmother was Jill Whelan - US actress, best known for her role of Vicki Stubing in the 80's TV series "The Love Boat". The vessel was the biggest one in the fleet right until June 2013, when Royal Princess  entered into service.

Fun fact: Caribbean Princess is the first cruise vessel to have an open-air theatre/ outdoor movie screen (named "Movies under the Stars").

Ship's European maiden season was based on homeport Southampton England . Then, it was repositioned to  NYC New York  to operate Fall Foliage cruises to New England, then relocated back to Fort Lauderdale for roundtrip Caribbean itineraries. In April 2013, the liner was deployed back to Europe for the British Isles and various Northern European itineraries in Baltic Sea.

In early-September 2018, Caribbean Princess became fleet's first vessel with installed  Carnival Corporation's OceanMedallion technology  (wearable devices allowing passengers access to "virtual concierge" services and amenities, as well as interactive entertainment). The new technology also includes the MedallionNet - Wi-Fi connectivity via access points installed in every stateroom. Passengers on MedallionClass cruise liners experience land-like connection quality allowing streaming of movies, music, videos, video phone calls, real-time sharing on social media platforms.

Panama Canal cruise itineraries 2017

In 2017, Caribbean Princess made her maiden season of  Panama Canal transition cruises  through the new locks. The ship operated on the 10-day itinerary (with partial transits through the new Agua Clara locks) on roundtrips from  Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades, Florida) . The ship's first ever transit was on October 26, 2017. Prices started from USD 1250 pp (double occupancy). This voyage also celebrated Princess Cruises' 50th anniversary of the 1967 crossing (world's first ever on passenger ship).

The fleet mates  Coral  and  Island  continued to transit the canal through the 3 old locks (Pedro Miguel, Miraflores, Gatun). The new locks were officially inaugurated on June 26, 2016. They are the result of a 9-year (USD 5,2 billion) construction project.

USA to Greenland itinerary 2019

A new Greenland cruise roundtrip from USA (NYC New York ) was revealed in January 2018 for the Princess Cruises Caribbean ship.

• The cruise departure was scheduled for August 19, 2019.
• The 16-days long itinerary's ports of call were in Greenland (Nanortalik, Nuuk, Qaqortoq) and Canada (Halifax, Sydney, St Johns).
• Cruise prices started from USD 2,500 pp (double occupancy Inside Cabin rate) plus additional USD 220 in Gov taxes and port fees.

Caribbean Princess refurbishment 2019 review

During drydock 2019 refurbishment (in June, done in Freeport Bahamas ) on the ship was installed fleet's first-ever waterpark - Reef Splash Zone (without waterslides!). Located aft-portside on Deck 17/Sports Deck (beneath the ramp leading to Skywalkers Nightclub on Deck 18), the water park was added as a new section to the original aft swimming pool (Pirate's View). The redesigned area now includes a large-sized Splashpad (outdoor water playground) fitted with splash pool, water cannons, water sprays, showers, interactive whale-like structure (with a "raining" fluke). The surrounding lounging area (designed for families with kids) was updated with new patio furniture (comfortable sectionals, chairs, sunloungers, padded garden couches with tables), new fixtures and finishes. The existing swimming pool, whirlpool hot tub (large outdoor Jacuzzi) and poolside bar (Morgan's Bar) were also renovated.

The newly-added Game Zone hosts family fun competitions and features oversized backyard games (the likes of Jenga, Cornhole, Connect Four). At Morgan's Bar (kids-friendly) parents can enjoy mocktails and cocktails. The surrounding lounge area is furnished with comfortable sectionals. The water-park is protected by wind panels (throughout the area) while its Shade Canopy (aft-starboard) is a sun-protected seating area covered with canvas canopies. The music system and lighting were upgraded (to the steps and swimming pool) and new wall lighting was installed for the evening open-deck parties, activities (including stargazing and educational kids programs) and themed events.

On Deck 16, the Spa complex (forward) was renovated, redesigned and updated with contemporary artworks and signage. On Deck 16 aft, at Camp Discovery Youth Center (kids-only complex for children 3-12 yo), the Outdoor Play Area was upgraded with an interactive water table for current itinerary/destination-themed fun activities.

Caribbean Princess refurbishment 2017 review

During the ship's 2017 drydock refurbishment (March 25 - April 5, done in Freeport Bahamas) resulted in the following deckplan changes:

• New kids area ("Camp Discovery" / kids and teen center) was added aft on deck 17.
• Pool deck's MUTS screen ("Movies Under the Stars" / 850-seat outdoor movie theatre) was upgraded.
• The number of interconnecting cabins (for families) was increased with an additional 87 pairs.
• (Lido Deck 15) "Horizon Court" was replaced by "World Fresh Marketplace". The ship's new buffet restaurant now has new decor, improved layout and more food options. Breakfast includes 24-hour cereal station, designer pancake station, hot cereal choices (like shrimp & grits and polenta porridge). Lunch includes hand-crafted sandwiches, regionally-inspired soups, a wide selection of meats (sausages, hams, roasted). Dinner includes family comfort foods, PB&J bar ("Peanut Butter and Jelly").  Nighttime buffet offerings include live-action cooking station (stir-fry, customized pasta, salads).
• (Lido Deck 15) the ship now has 2 casual specialty restaurants formed from the old "Cafe Caribe". Both restaurants are designed for families with kids. The first at-fee restaurant ("Planks BBQ") serves family-style meat planks (ribs, beef, sausages, chicken) plus sides (fries, chili, coleslaw, charred toast, dill pickles).  Dinner here is served and costs USD 12 pp.  Free buffet-style breakfast and lunch here include customizable breakfast bowls, signature soup, fresh-made salads, fork & knife sandwiches. The second at-fee restaurant ("Steamers Seafood" offers steamers with regionally sourced seafood (Black and Blue Mussels, Scallops and Sausage, Classic Clams, Crab-stuffed Flounder).  Dinner is served and costs USD 12 pp.  Free buffet-style breakfast and lunch choices include egg dishes and ramen bowls.
• Following the 2017 refurbishment, the ship's pool deck (15) offers 4 outdoor dining options. "The Salty Dog Grill" (formerly "Trident Grill") offers “The Ernesto” burger (best at sea), other specialty beef burgers (with handmade patties and buns), also Street Tacos (with grilled chipotle-lime chicken or roasted sweet potato, corn tortillas), fries and classic hot dogs. "Slice Pizzeria" (formerly "Prego Pizzeria") offers Neapolitan-style pizzas, Deep Dish Focaccia (with marinara, meatballs, cheese), California Artisanal Toast, Sliced Stromboli (calzone filled with deli meats and cheese). "Coffee & Cones" (formerly "Scoops Bar") offers gourmet ice cream sandwiches, free ice cream cones, specialty coffees and teas. "THE MIX" (formerly "Blackbeard’s Bar") / poolside drinks bar) was updated and redesigned.
• The specialty Italian Trattoria restaurant Sabatini’s (formerly "SHARE by Curtis Stone", on Promenade Deck 7) was redesigned, debuting a new menu with antipasti and handmade pasta dishes by celebrity chef Angelo Auriana, Sabatini’s new menu was implemented fleetwide in 2017. Angelo Auriana is an Executive Chef and partner in the Los Angeles' Italian restaurants "The Factory Kitchen" and "Officine BRERA". Chef Auriana's dishes are based on using old-world grains (like buckwheat and durum wheat) giving them the protein strength necessary to keep the house-made pasta's shape. He also uses numerous non-traditional herbs (like mints and marjoram).

All stateroom beds (a total of 3200 units) were replaced with the company's signature "Princess Luxury Beds”.

Carnival's Ocean Medallion technology was installed in September 2018.

This is only our 2nd cruise and we did not have to tender in Alaska. We will be on the Royal.

We have 2 ports, Guernsey & Edinburgh (South Queensferry), where tendering is required.

I understand Guesnsey is missed frequently and sometimes So Que.

Assuming they are not skipped how does it work? We are not Elite or anything so will be standing in line (I assume) to get tender tickets? How early can we get in line? Do we both (or anyone we are going with) have to be in line or can one person get all tendering tickets? If we are going with someone that does have some type of Priority status can they get tender tickets for us?

Since we will be having someone pick us up what is a good time to tell them to be there to get us?

Sorry for all the questions, just trying to figure out how all this works.

It will be fully explained in the Patter. There will be a time announced to go to a location (dining room usually) to get a tender ticket, all persons in your party must go together, they will call your number, you get on a tender. No worry, everything is explained onboard. time for pick up varies according when you get off the ship. That depends on factors no one can foresee.

This is only our 2nd cruise and we did not have to tender in Alaska. We will be on the Royal.   We have 2 ports, Guernsey & Edinburgh (South Queensferry), where tendering is required.   I understand Guesnsey is missed frequently and sometimes So Que.   Assuming they are not skipped how does it work? We are not Elite or anything so will be standing in line (I assume) to get tender tickets? How early can we get in line? Do we both (or anyone we are going with) have to be in line or can one person get all tendering tickets? If we are going with someone that does have some type of Priority status can they get tender tickets for us?   Since we will be having someone pick us up what is a good time to tell them to be there to get us?   Sorry for all the questions, just trying to figure out how all this works.   TIA, Sandi

On the Royal everyone, except those on Princess tours, going on a tender must report to the Symphony DR, deck 5 mid ship. The DR opens about 1/2 hour before tenders are ready. Lines will form outside of the DR. It is one person, one tender ticket. If two or more are going ashore together then all must be there to get their ticket. Once you have your ticket you find a place to wait in the DR until your number is called. My first hand experience is that those that have priority tendering, Elites and Full Suites, did not receive tender tickets. As they enter the DR they are placed in a special line and board the next tender(s) out. So no, those with priority can not pick up a ticket for you. At some time during the morning tender tickets will no longer be required. I can't answer your question about pick up timing. I expect it depends on the port and how many tenders can dock there at the same time.

Thank you. That's what I needed to know. I'm making arrangements to call for our pickup as soon as I have our tender tickets with hopefully an idea of how long it will be until we disembark. Which I do realize will depend on several factors.

Thanks, Yes we are going to try to get to St. Andrews via private means. DHs bucket list item and I'm really hoping we can do it.

Can somebody tell me how and when (before/after elite/suite) passengers on Princess tours access to the tenders? I'm not "elite" nor in a suite and I have to know in advance if booking a Princess tour would be better to maximise time on shore. I remember a very long waiting time on QM2 in South-Queensferry.

Tours meet in Princess Theater at the time on your Tour ticket - which will largely depend on when the tour starts. Elites/Suites and regular tender meet in the dining room as noted above. The crew will fill tenders with tours and priority first then regulars. So pick a tour with an early start time and go for it.

We went on the Caribbean Princess last summer. In Guernsey, we did not have hardly any wait for the tender. We're Elite, but everyone in the dining room at 7:15 got to go on the same tender. They were similarly efficient in South Queensferry. I did not write down at the time how much of a wait we had for the tender.

Tendering into St Peter Port at 7:15am must have been a real thrill. As I recall, about the only thing open at that hour (or even at 8:30) were a few cafes and coffee shops :). The last time we tendered into that port we were met by friends (who we had met years earlier on another cruise). As is typical of the island they suggested meeting for a cup of coffee around 10 :).

Exactly - you said it better than me. The ship has 4 tender bays, and usually 2 are in use. We've seen every variation on this theme. Thanks for the clarification!
