Insider knowledge

What is staff travel, what does staff travel mean.

Staff travel is a benefit for (retired) airline employees, travel industry employees, their family members or close friends (often called "buddy passes"). Staff travel tickets can be purchased at a fraction of the costs of a standard ticket, but are only granted if there are unsold seats available. They are used extensively throughout the airline industry.

How to get the seat availability?

You came to the right place! We have created the StaffTraveler app to enable you to check the loads for the flights you wish to travel on. With our advanced flight search engine, you can easily find the perfect flights to your destination. With one tap, you can request the loads of all the possible flights. People at the airlines you wish to travel with will answer your requests, enabling you to choose the perfect route and time to travel. Join our  890,000 members  from over  1,000 airlines  today.

What are non-rev passengers?

Non-rev passengers (also referred to as standby passengers or nonrevs) are passengers who fly on discount tickets. These tickets are sometimes called ID90 (for 90% discount) or ZED (for Zonal Employee Discount) tickets. In other words: non-rev passengers are passengers who are not producing revenue for the airline.

See below for the benefits and downsides of staff travel tickets.

Who can staff travel?

People who work for an airline often have the benefit of being eligible for staff travel. Depending on their airline's policy, their family members and friends can join them on their flights for the same, low fee.

Please  let us know  if you have a more accurate estimate.

What are the benefits of staff travel?

Freedom and flexibility! That is how most airline employees would praise staff travel. We can travel the world at severely reduced prices. Also, we can change our plans at any time as staff travel tickets are as flexible as it gets: they're valid for months and can be cancelled for free.

What are the downsides of staff travel?

Uncertainty. If the flight is full, we don't get on board. Often, this is decided at the very last moment. On busy routes, flights may be overbooked for days.

At StaffTraveler, we decided to make your staff travel trips easier and less stressful by getting you in touch with the people who can look up the number of available seats. For the first time, you can accurately estimate your chances of getting onboard, by having access to accurate, reliable flight loads.

Can I staff travel on all airlines?

Depending on your airline's agreements with other airlines, there may be many other airlines that you can purchase staff travel tickets for. Please check with your airline which agreements they have made.

How to book a staff travel ticket?

This depends on your airline. myIDTravel is a popular choice for airlines, but your airline might have a proprietary system. Please ask your airline if you are unsure about booking your staff travel tickets.

Please note that myIDTravel indicates the loads in a funny way, based on smileys. These indications are not exact and have proven to be unreliable. We've got your back: you can request exact and reliable flight loads with our StaffTraveler app.

Where can I download the StaffTraveler app?

You can download the StaffTraveler app in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. We hope you'll like it!

Where can I get non-rev information for the airline that I'm flying with?

Many airlines have their own specific rules and procedures when it comes to ID90 passengers. StaffTraveler has a large database with airline-specific, ID90 related information. You'll find these in the StaffTraveler app and in the online StaffTraveler Airline Notes.

how does qantas staff travel work

Qantas offers its employees and their families and friends heavily discounted standby flights and 25% off confirmed Qantas flights. Qantas staff travelers are required to follow a dress code and baggage rules. They must also make flight listings at least 24 hours before their travel date. While staff travel is a great benefit, it is not without its challenges. For instance, staff travelers are on standby and may not get a seat on the flight, especially during peak seasons.

What You'll Learn

Qantas staff and their families can access discounted standby flights and confirmed qantas flights, staff can also access exclusive discounts on hotels and holiday packages, there is a dress code for qantas staff when travelling on services rebate, qantas staff must make flight listings at least 24 hours before travel, qantas staff can earn thankq points, which can be redeemed for qantas staff travel credits.

Qantas offers its employees and their families access to discounted standby flights and confirmed Qantas flights. This means that staff and their families can purchase heavily discounted flights across the globe, but they may be placed on standby when they arrive at the airport, so their flight is not guaranteed. Qantas staff can also receive 25% off confirmed Qantas flights, so they can book in advance if they prefer.

There are several considerations for those wishing to take advantage of Qantas staff travel benefits. Firstly, staff travellers must adhere to a dress code when travelling on Qantas services. This includes wearing neat, clean, and conservative clothing, such as tidy denim jeans or knee-length dress shorts. Additionally, staff travellers must make flight listings at least 24 hours before their travel date and check-in at the dedicated staff travel counters at the airport. It is important to note that staff travellers with standby tickets cannot check in online and must allow enough time for landing and checking in again at any intermediate points.

Another factor to consider is the availability of flights, especially during peak seasons. While Qantas does not typically impose embargoes, staff travellers are reminded that flights during popular travel times may be full. This can result in a challenge for those on standby tickets, as they may be placed on a waiting list and risk being bumped for other passengers.

Furthermore, staff travellers should be aware that special meals are not available, and they cannot request specific seats. Any changes in seating arrangements, even after check-in, may occur to accommodate commercial requirements. Additionally, children under 16 years old cannot travel on staff travel rebate tickets unless accompanied by an adult with the same type of ticket.

Overall, while Qantas staff and their families can access discounted flights, it is important to be flexible and spontaneous when utilising these benefits. Staff travellers should be prepared for potential delays and last-minute changes.

Qantas offers its employees a wide range of benefits, including travel discounts. Staff can access heavily discounted standby flights worldwide for themselves and their friends and family, as well as 25% off confirmed Qantas flights.

In addition to flight discounts, Qantas employees can also take advantage of exclusive discounts on hotels and holiday packages. These deals are available to both current and retired staff. For example, at the time of writing, Qantas is offering $200 off per person on its Grand Japan holiday package, which includes return international Qantas flights, accommodation, and more.

Qantas also has partnerships with companies in shopping, food, wine, insurance, wellbeing, leisure, and entertainment, which provide further discounts for employees.

The airline also offers its employees the opportunity to earn and redeem Qantas Points for everyday activities, which can be used for flight rewards, upgrades, hotels, car hire, and more.

Travel Abroad: A College Student's Must-Do

Qantas employees get access to heavily discounted standby flights across the globe for themselves and their family and friends, as well as 25% off confirmed Qantas flights. However, there are certain guidelines that must be followed by Qantas staff when travelling on services rebate.

When it comes to the dress code, Qantas staff must maintain a high standard of dress and grooming. The general rule is to be neat, clean, and conservative. Tidy denim jeans and near knee-length dress shorts, including denim, are acceptable.

However, it is important to avoid certain items of clothing. Tracksuits, jeans with cut-off and frayed hems, designer holes, singlets, bare midriffs, strapless tops or dresses, overly revealing clothing, rubber thongs/flip flops, and bare feet are not allowed. Any extremes of leisure wear, including sweatshirts or t-shirts with questionable graphics or language, are also prohibited.

In addition to the dress code, there are other guidelines that Qantas staff must follow when travelling on services rebate. For example, staff travellers must make flight listings at least 24 hours prior to travel, and specific check-in procedures must be followed for international and domestic flights.

Overall, while Qantas staff can take advantage of discounted flights, they are expected to maintain a neat and conservative appearance when travelling on services rebate.

The Ins and Outs of Traveling with a Visa

Qantas staff and their friends and family can access heavily discounted standby flights, as well as 25% off confirmed Qantas flights. However, staff travel is not always straightforward and requires flexibility. For example, staff travellers are often on standby when they get to the airport, so the flight is not guaranteed.

To make the most of this benefit, it is important to follow the correct procedures. Qantas staff must make flight listings for all Qantas and Jetstar flights at least 24 hours before travel. This can be done via www.myidtravel.com/myidlisting/. If you do not have your airline's log-in access to myIDTravel, you can contact your staff travel office for the user ID and password.

If you are experiencing problems listing via the myIDTravel website, ensure your e-tickets have been issued correctly. If the issue persists, you can email [email protected] or call +61 1300 303 411 (select option 1) with your details (including passenger name/s, airline, e-ticket number/s, flight and date details) for assistance in making a listing.

It is important to note that staff travellers without a listing may be refused travel. Additionally, Qantas staff should be aware of the dress and grooming standards that must be maintained when travelling on Qantas services.

Travel Abroad: Her Invitation

Qantas offers its employees heavily discounted standby flights across the globe for themselves and their family and friends, as well as 25% off confirmed Qantas flights. Qantas staff can also access exclusive discounts on hotels and holiday packages.

Qantas staff can earn ThankQ points through the ThankQ program, which rewards teams and colleagues for their excellent work. These points can be redeemed for Qantas Staff Travel credits, Qantas Points, Qantas Club Lounge Passes, and gift cards.

The number of points required for a free flight depends on the destination and the class of service. For example, a one-way flight in economy class from Sydney to Melbourne might require 15,000 points, while a one-way flight in business class from Sydney to Los Angeles might require 120,000 points.

Qantas staff can also take advantage of other benefits such as discounts from Qantas partners in shopping, food, wine, insurance, wellbeing, leisure, and entertainment. Additionally, employees can enjoy discounted fitness memberships at hundreds of gyms and pools across Australia through the company's partnership with Fitness Passport.

Qantas staff to return to work before Christmas as nationwide restart of international travel begins

Topic: Federal Government

Qantas is preparing for a nationwide restart from December 21, with all its crews to be back to work before Christmas.

Key points:

  • More than 10,000 Qantas staff will return to work by December 21
  • Several international routes are being restarted ahead of schedule
  • Domestic routes are also being resumed as state borders reopen

New South Wales opens its borders to the world from November 1, and the carrier has announced several international routes will restart sooner than expected, with Delhi, Singapore, Fiji, Johannesburg, Bangkok and Phuket among the earliest to open up.

Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said a Qantas Dreamliner would depart from Sydney to Darwin on its way to London on November 1, the airline's first regular long-haul flight since March last year.

"[It is] probably the biggest and the best news we've had for two years," Mr Joyce said.

"This 20 months is probably the darkest period in Qantas's 100-year history."

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said rising vaccination rates meant Australia was "ready for take off".

"The national plan was all about opening up Australia safely so we can remain safely open, and that is what we are seeing here today," Mr Morrison said.

International flights will initially be restricted to citizens, permanent residents and their immediate families.

But Mr Morrison said he expected travel to quickly open up for other groups, with students and business travellers next in the queue, followed by skilled migrants and then international tourists.

"I am confident that because of the way we have prepared for this day, that is very possible and very achievable by the end of the year," Mr Morrison said.

Crews return to work

Six thousand Qantas staff in jobs linked to international flights were stood down during the pandemic, along with 5,000 domestic flight workers.

Mr Joyce said those domestic crews would also soon be back to work as interstate travel resumed.

Travel between states and territories is expected to resume in line with border restrictions being lifted.

Qantas has faced repeated criticism throughout the pandemic over its staffing decisions, including outsourcing ground crews while receiving government support to retain staff.

Earlier this week,  Qantas was charged for allegedly standing down a worker at the start of the pandemic who had directed staff to "cease unsafe work" because he said they did not have adequate protective equipment while cleaning planes.

Qantas has said its employees were provided the necessary protective equipment.
