What's the Story?

In HERO DOG: THE JOURNEY HOME, Royce ( Steve Byers ), a blind man, is commuting on a boat to see his family after working all week at his new job in the city. He's accompanied by Chinook, an Alaskan Malamute. While crossing the lake, the captain of the boat collapses and falls unconscious, and while the boat doesn't capsize in the lake or crash into the rocks near the shore, Royce is on an isolated part of the lake with no one but Chinook to help him get back. While his two kids, Max and Erin, wait for Royce at the dock with their Aunt Susan ( Natasha Henstridge ). (Their mother died of cancer two years earlier.) Susan begins to fear the worst, and the search for Royce soon begins, first on the lake and then through the thick forest around the lake.

As the search continues and Royce remains missing, Max and Erin decide to sneak out and use their camping skills to conduct a search of their own, but they soon become lost themselves. Meanwhile, Royce, with the help of Chinook, must cross rough waters, navigate dangerous crossings, and face off against a mountain lion. Nonetheless, Chinook proves to be a brave companion to Royce, with a rather extraordinary gift for orienteering. But when Royce sustains finds himself trapped beneath a log and unable to move, it's going to require the help of Chinook, Royce's kids, and the entire search party to somehow find Royce and get him and Chinook back home.

Is It Any Good?

This is a heavy-handed adventure story about a dog in the wild, but kids will probably enjoy it. It's the story of a man who lost his vision while serving his country in Afghanistan who now must find a way to navigate the deepest of woods after the captain of the boat that was to take him back to his family loses consciousness and leaves him far from home, with only an Alaskan Malamute named Chinook to get him home. There's plenty of the requisite peril -- everything from mountain lions to wolves to merciless rocks and rapids, and if that's not enough, the son and daughter of the lead character soon become lost themselves after they try to use their camping skills to do what the helicopters, planes, and walkie talkies of the search party cannot do. But no matter. Chinook is preternaturally gifted at orienteering, and knows when to bark when the danger to the humans is especially eminent.

The lead character is not only blind, but he has also lost his wife to cancer two years ago. He works a job in "the city" now that the local mine has closed. Also, his son resents his dad for taking the job because that means they're going to move to the big city, and the son wants to continue to enjoy his life in the great outdoors. It's already a lot, so it seems a bit much to also have to face off against a rabid mountain lion with nothing but a flare gun and a big dog. It's clearly in the tradition of the older Disney movies with gifted pets who rescue their grateful human counterparts, but it really doesn't do anything new with that tried-and-true formula. Still, dog lovers will enjoy seeing a heroic dog do his thing.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about movies that prominently feature dogs, such as Hero Dog: The Journey Home . How does this compare to other "dog movies" you've seen?

The lead character lost his vision while serving in the military in Afghanistan. Does this movie portray an accurate depiction of someone without sight? Why or why not?

Did the peril that these characters faced seem necessary to the story, or did it seem exaggerated and unnecessary? Why?

About the authors

Radhanath swami.

Born in Chicago in 1950, Radhanath Swami, sets out to wander the world on a spiritual quest. Arriving in India in 1970, he lives the life of a wandering mendicant, travelling both outwardly and inwardly. Within months, his young world is augmented by experience, realization, soul-stirring revelations and near death experiences. He imbibes the teachings of great yogis, monks, and gurus including Swami Sivananda, Swami Rama, Swami Satchitananda, Swami Chidananda, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Ananda Mayi Ma, Neem Karoli Baba, Muktananda, the Dalai Lama and Mother Teresa. He meets lepers and Naga Babas, contemplative Buddhists and mystic yogis. Living in Himalayan caves, forests and under trees, he moves through the subcontinent with a thirst for "the truth" that is rarely seen. Fasting and meditating for a month on the Banks of the Ganga in Rishikesh, he hears the celestial sound of mantras emerging from the Holy River.

Each experience brings him closer to the core of India's mystic teachings and to the divine love he has been seeking. He reveals all in "The Journey Home", a penetrating account into the heart of a seeker, filled with humor, adventure, wisdom, and inspiration. Perhaps not since, Autobiography of A Yogi, has such a lucid and intricate tale of one man's revelation of the soul been so wonderfully recounted. As a man of infinite depth and grace, his life story offers all who hear it, an infinite wisdom.

  • Pax, Journey Home Summary

by Sara Pennypacker

These notes were contributed by members of the GradeSaver community. We are thankful for their contributions and encourage you to make your own.

Written by Ben Jamal and other people who wish to remain anonymous

Pax, Journey Home is a sequel authored by Sara Pennypacker. The story involves a boy named Peter and a fox called Pax . The chapters alternate between Peter and Pax until their paths converge. A year after Peter abandoned him, Pax went to the forest and get married to Bristle . The story begins with Pax running haphazardly in the forest. The memories of Peter and his cage are fresh in his mind. Pax is worried that Bristle has not been taking food of late. During one of his many excursions in the forest, Pax comes across a warren with two dead kits. Pax does not bother with the kits and goes back to join his family. One calm morning, Pax smells a strange but familiar scent.

Peter was compelled by his father to part ways with Pax and join his grandfather who lived away from their home. The boy obliged but felt disheartened. During the war, his father dies and Peter is left only with one relative, his grandfather. Peter’s grandfather is not friendly and casts doubt in every person including his kin. The boy occasionally experiences memories of people he adored. However, no memory hurts him more than that of Pax. The experience has made Peter to believe that love and care for others bring him pain rather than happiness.

The feeling of loneliness obliges Peter to join a group of young people repairing watercourses poisoned during the war. The group’s name is Water Warriors and Peter befriends other members like Jade and Samuel. However, he is cautious not to find himself committed to anyone lest they die or abandon him. The repair of water streams makes Pax catch his scent. Following the poisoning of one of his kits, Pax despairs and remembers Peter as the only human who can help him. After one year of separation, fate would converge their paths again. The story signifies the importance of love and forgiveness.

Back to ‘Immigration system statistics, year ending June 2024’ content page .

This Accredited Official Statistics publication provides statistics describing the UK immigration system. This summary chapter provides a brief overview, with a selection of key statistics from each of the chapters in the full report.

The UK immigration system contains a wide range of Home Office activities including issuing short and long term visas to those outside of the UK, extensions and changes to visas, granting of settlement and citizenship to those already in the UK, providing safe and legal (humanitarian) routes of entry, as well as providing asylum and carrying out enforcement action. Figure 1 provides a summary of these different aspects of the immigration system.

Figure 1: Summary of the UK immigration system 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 , year ending June 2024

  • This diagram is a simplification and doesn’t include all parts of the immigration system, such as people crossing the border who do not require a visa, or irregular arrivals. Data in different parts of the immigration system is not always comparable.
  • Safe and legal (humanitarian) routes include visas granted on the Ukraine, Hong Kong BN(O) and family reunion routes, as well as refugee resettlement and relocation in the UK.
  • The EU settlement scheme ( EUSS ) figure relates to grants of settled status or pre-settled status, in the year ending June 2024.
  • Immigration detention relates to the number of people in detention on 30 June 2024.

Overview of people coming to the UK

The majority of the 128.4 million passenger arrivals in the UK in the year ending June 2024 were British nationals. Of the non-British arrivals, most will be short-term arrivals such as visitors, with smaller numbers arriving for other reasons (such as work, study and family).

In the year ending June 2024, 1.16 million visas were granted for work, study or family reasons (including dependants). In the same period, 38,784 people were detected arriving in the UK by irregular routes.

75,167 people were granted permission to come to the UK by safe and legal routes such as the Ukraine and BN(O) schemes, refugee resettlement and family reunion (note family reunion visas are included in the ‘Family visas’ category, not ‘Safe and legal’ in Figure 2) and 45,886 were granted ‘Other’ visas.

Figure 2: Number of visas granted to come to the UK by main category (excluding visitors and transit), and number of detected irregular arrivals, year ending June 2024 (main applicants and dependants)

Source: Entry clearance visa applications and outcomes – Vis_D02 , Asylum and resettlement summary tables – Asy_11 , Irregular migration to the UK - Irr_D01

  • ‘Other visas’ include settlement visas, temporary visas (exc. transit), EUSS family permits and some other family members coming to accompany others.
  • ‘Safe and legal’ includes out of country Ukraine and BN(O) schemes and refugee resettlement. It excludes family reunion visas which are included in ‘Family visas’.
  • Chart does not include visitors or transit visas, those coming to the UK who have indefinitely leave to remain or status on the EU Settlement Scheme, non-visa national visits, or undetected irregular arrivals.

Smart Home Technology: Where to Start and What to Avoid

H ello, fellow home technology enthusiasts and newcomers! Ready to dive into the smart home world but feeling a bit overwhelmed? We understand. The sea of devices out there can be dizzying. But don’t worry! In this post we’ll be your guide, showing you how to effortlessly transform your house into a smart home. From voice-activated assistants that play your favorite music to lights that automatically turn on and off, we’ve got you covered. Plus, we’ll help you avoid common mistakes that even tech experts make. So let’s make your home smarter, without the hassle.

Start your Journey: Choosing Your Assistant

Your smart home journey starts with one crucial step: picking your Smart Home Assistant. This is where you’ll choose which assistant will help you with everything – from checking the weather to managing your living space. Whether you prefer Amazon’s Alexa, Google’s Assistant, or Apple’s Siri, select one that integrates well with the devices you already own or plan to buy. It’s all about compatibility and ease of use! This will be the type of smart home hub that you want to buy. A reliable smart hub is essential, acting as your system’s brain and ensuring all devices communicate seamlessly.

Beginner Steps to a Smarter Home

Wondering how to begin? Start with a plan and the basics. Decide what you want your smart home to do – save energy, enhance security, or simplify daily tasks. Then, make sure your Wi-Fi is up to the task, covering your entire home. We recommend beginning with easy-to-install devices like smart bulbs, plugs, or robot vacuums to enjoy immediate benefits and gradually expand your setup.

Ideal Starter Devices for Newbies

Excited to start? Begin with smart bulbs and plugs – they’re straightforward, require minimal setup, and are budget-friendly. Smart bulbs offer the flexibility to adjust lighting from your phone, a schedule, or voice commands. They are perfect for setting the ambiance or impressing guests. Smart plugs transform ordinary appliances into smart ones, allowing you to turn on your lights from bed or check if you’ve turned off your straightener after you’ve left the house. These devices make the smart home experience accessible and fun, setting the stage for more advanced gadgets down the line.

Avoiding Common Smart Home Set-Up Mistakes

The three big mistakes when setting up a smart home are:

  • buying incompatible devices
  • neglecting security
  • underestimating your Wi-Fi needs.

Stick to one voice assistant or devices supporting universal standards like Zigbee or Z-Wave to ensure compatibility. Double check any new device before you buy them to make sure they’ll be compatible with your voice assistant. Prioritize security by changing default passwords and keeping devices updated. Maybe even set everything up on a guest network if you’re feeling spunky. Lastly, ensure your Wi-Fi can handle the extra load, avoiding system overloads and frustration.

Elevating Your Smart Home Experience

Once you’re comfortable with the basics, you can start adding on to your smart home. You can add smart locks and video doorbells for security, and smoke detectors for safety alerts on your phone even when you’re not at home. For entertainment, explore smart TVs and speakers for voice-activated music and movies. Don’t forget smart shades for natural wake-ups and smart sensors for even more personalized comfort. These upgrades will not just make your home smart but turn it into a modern, relaxing retreat.

And that’s it! Starting your smart home journey is about embracing convenience and control. Begin with essential devices and a smart hub, avoiding common traps and focusing on security. With thoughtful choices and a bit of planning, you’ll create a connected, harmonious, and secure home. Welcome to the future of living, where control is right at your fingertips. Let the automation begin!

Cover to The Voyage Home with outlines of Greek women holding hands in the backdrop

The legend of Troy – a city sparking with fire, a cataclysmic war and a refugee crisis – always has something more to offer writers looking for inspiration. The unspeakable horrors of conflict. The brutalities written on women’s bodies. The journey that, for the victors, means a voyage home, and for the victims, a farewell to freedom.

And it’s very much the season for Troy. Emily Wilson’s landmark Iliad translation was released in paperback on August 6. Stephen Fry’s Odyssey retelling will be published in September. My own book, Mythica – a new history of Homer’s world, told through the real women written out of it – is published next spring.

And now the final novel in Pat Barker’s Trojan War series, The Voyage Home , is here. This three-part voyage began with The Silence of the Girls in 2018, a rewriting of the Iliad that hurled a pointed question against the logic of the glory of war, and the epics that tell it.

Barker’s angle (both in The Silence of the Girls and its 2021 sequel, The Women of Troy , 2021) is to insist, unrelentingly, on the grim, real hideousness of war. The range and scope of the horror is vast: from macroscopic crimes of genocide, enslavement and mass rape that stain the Trojan War, to microscale realities of battle in “shit”, “piss” and (unforgettably) the “goose-fat jar” shared by the raped victims of the Greeks.

The trilogy is a harrowing read, but a necessary one. Each book prises myth and war out of the self-justification of men like Agamemnon and Achilles who refused to see women and enslaved people as worthy. These stories demand, uncompromisingly, a confrontation with the consequences.

Life after war

The Voyage Home moves from the atrocities committed in the ruins of battle to the repercussions those crimes have on the life after, at “home” and asks: what does that even mean, when one man’s home is another woman’s prison?

As in Barker’s other novels, the language is plain to the point of crudeness (there’s plenty of “piss” and “shit”). And, for the most part, it encapsulates the forces at work in this brutal world: “I was Cassandra’s catch-fart,” remarks Ritsa in the opening pages; “well, be honest, would you want that on your headstone?”

The narrative pulses with the inevitability of the Greek tragedies from which Barker draws, towards some sort of retribution by women for the horrors at Troy, acted out against Agamemnon, king of the Greeks. He will take the final, though not complete, punishment for the butchery and rape he led at Troy.

Clytemnestra, Agamemnon’s wife, whose daughter he slaughtered, paces within the haunted walls of Mycenae, planning her husband’s murder. At night she weaves a sleeveless tunic in which she’ll trap him on his return. (No prizes for spotting the parallel to Odysseus’ wife, Penelope.)

Author Pat Barker.

Cassandra is loaded up on a boat out of Troy, as the Trojan women are carted back to Greece, moving towards her prophesied fate. And Ritsa, an invention of Barker’s, former friend of Briseis (narrator of The Silence of the Girls, whom it seems Barker misses quite as much as Ritsa does) traipses in Cassandra’s wake. She watches the tragedy unravel, tossing in occasional wry reflections on the powerlessness of women and slaves.

And, through it all, the lurching journey towards Agamemnon’s murder is accompanied by raucous nursery rhymes from the ghosts of children who inhabit the walls of Mycenae’s palace – as well as their hand prints, smattering behind tapestries: “Here comes a candle to light you to bed, here comes a chopper to CHOP OFF YOUR HEAD!”

There are lingering smears here of crimes that cannot be wiped clean. The murder of Clytemnestra’s daughter, Iphigenia, by her own father. The gruesome slaughter (and cannibalism) of Agamemnon’s nephews by his father. The horrific crime of babies tossed from the walls of Troy (on Agamemnon’s orders). All mix together in the voices of the ghost-children to generate a bubbling, fervid chorus that demand retribution, and broaden the crimes of war that Barker redresses from rape and enslavement to violence against children.

In so doing, Barker points a finger at women’s suffering, not only as rape victims, but as mothers. The image of the ghosts of Trojan boys skittering along behind their enslaved mothers on the forced march to captivity is not one I will soon forget.

Barker is too clever to allow her readers too much closure, though. As Ritsa is quick to point out, it wasn’t the Trojan women who got to take their rage and their vengeance out on Agamemnon: “he was killed by a Greek queen avenging an entirely different crime … The best those slave mothers could hope for was survival – and not all of them managed that”.

Only the rich and the powerful get to have their justice – and even then, as Clytemnestra knows, justice will soon turn against her, too. Though Agamemnon’s death goes some way to a satisfyingly bloody repayment for the destruction Barker has catalogued, there is a lingering sense that the children will always demand more. And therein lies the novel’s power: the redress against Agamemnon is both magnificent and insufficient.

As any Greek tragedy would tell you, loss can never truly be repaid. Grief is never over. The Trojan War, and the traumas its women endured, will not be forgotten.
