Waikiki is perhaps one of the most famous beach resort destinations in the world. The sun-bleached, beachy stretch of Honolulu overlooks the South Sea and is the most popular place in Hawaii for tourists . Sandwiched between downtown Honolulu and Diamond Head Crater , Waikiki is truly the heart of Honolulu and Hawaii in general.

The highest concentration of hotels on the Hawaiian islands can be found right here in Waikiki. You'll find them either along the beach or along Kalakaua Avenue , the main artery in Waikiki. The streets that offshoot Kalakaua Avenue are jam-packed with restaurants, shopping, entertainment, and things to do.

The main attraction of Waikiki, by far, is the two-mile sand strip along the oceanfront. Waikiki has a series of beaches, almost all of which are ideal for swimming and water sports, including snorkeling, boogie-boarding, canoeing, and, of course, surfing.

The beaches begin in the west with Duke Kahanamoku Beach , named after the famous Olympic swimmer, sitting immediately in front of the Hilton Hawaiian Village . The stretch of sand extends to the east to Sans Souci Beach at Diamond Head . Beaches overlap one another so smoothly that tourists find them indistinguishable.

Just past Kahanamoku Beach is Fort DeRussy Beach Park, a lovely spot that offers a grassy area for picnics and recreation. This is followed by the small Gray's Beach and then the Royal Hawaiian Beach , which is without a doubt the most famous and crowded part of Waikiki. Beachgoers will find most of the area's amenities centered around this area, including catamaran rentals, outrigger canoes, and surfing lessons, as well as several beach shacks.

Next comes Kuhio Beach Park , also known as Prince Kuhio Beach or "The Ponds," a nickname that was the result of cement wall enclosures. These have created calm swimming areas that are ideal for younger swimmers. Beyond this is Kapiolani Beach Park and Sans Souci Beach.

Waikiki is close to some of the best hiking in Oahu, but perhaps the most iconic hiking trail in Waikiki is the hike up Diamond Head Crater. Diamond Head Crater, also known as Le'ahi in Hawaiian, is the now-extinct volcano to the east of Waikiki and is one of the symbols of Oahu and Honolulu.

The magnificent piece of land is absolutely gorgeous to look at. It was named Diamond Head in the 19th century when sailors thought the crystals found here were diamonds. They weren't, but the name stuck.

One of the most popular hiking trails in the area is at Diamond Head State Monument . The historic trail at this state landmark rises from the floor of the crater up to the summit along a steep path. The path turns to stairs closer to the summit. At the top, visitors will have one of the most epic views of Waikiki .

Note: If you're an experienced hiker, this is a fairly easy hike. Keep in mind, however, that the trail will be very crowded and can be slow-going, as oftentimes you're walking single file.

Atlantis Submarines offers tourists the opportunity to stay dry in one of their passenger submarines while taking in the wonders of the undersea world.

While exploring beneath the surface, guides provide fascinating details about the numerous fish and other sea creatures, as well as commentary on the various man-made objects that can be seen offshore. Among these are ships and airplanes that have been sunk intentionally to help create barriers and protective places for the reef and fish to re-grow after destruction by both weather and human activities.

These submarines can be a good option for families or those who are not interested in scuba diving but would still like a truly immersive underwater experience. If you are lucky, a whale might even meander by to inspect the sub.

The Waikiki Aquarium educates visitors about Hawaii's unique sea life and the marine communities of the South Pacific. Exhibits feature both habitats and specific animals, with a large portion of the aquarium dedicated to the ecology and residents of coral reefs.

Within several coral reef exhibits, kids will love to learn about the relationship between clownfish and sea anemones; get an up-close look at reef predators like sharks and groupers; and view the aquarium's coral farm, which produces colonies that are used by other aquariums around the world.

Visitors also come to see the aquarium's Northwestern Hawaiian Islands exhibit, home to two critically endangered monk seals, as well as several other unique marine species only found among these uninhabited islands. Other exhibits include the underwater habitat in a mangrove forest, giant clams, jellyfish, and an assortment of rare deep-sea fish and invertebrates.

The Honolulu Zoo is a 42-acre zoo featuring hundreds of animals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. The grounds also include a huge variety of tropical plants, creating a botanical garden setting, which includes native Hawaiian plants. There are also native Hawaiian animals in residence, including the Hawaiian Goose, Nene, and the Hawaiian Hawk, 'Io. Additionally, there are many favorites such as tigers, elephants, monkeys, and Komodo dragons.

The Honolulu Zoo is the only zoo that sits on a royal land grant. Today, the zoo represents three tropical zones: the African Savannah, tropical rainforests, and island ecosystems. There is also a children's zoo and playground.

This beautiful park, which King Kalakaua gave to the city and now bears the name of his wife, divides Waikiki from the small residential area on the southwest side of Diamond Head .

Kapiolani Park is Honolulu's oldest public park and also the best-loved. Along Kalakaua Avenue, the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center is an ultra-modern, luxury shopping complex with stores that run the gamut from watches and jewelry to boutiques, designer clothing, and restaurants.

Some of the best Waikiki restaurants and eateries are located within the shopping center, too. At any time of day, you'll find people snacking on fresh poke bowls in the food court, or stealing away into the higher-end dining rooms for excellent dinners.

More than just a shopping complex, however, the Royal Hawaiian Center has a lot of free things to do — which can be more than welcome in an expensive destination like Honolulu. Kumu (teachers) conduct hula lessons, as well as ukulele classes and instruction in lauhala weaving and lei making .

There are also regular hula shows , which feature traditional dancers in full costume, as well as an explanation of the art form's history and significance in Hawaiian culture. The center also provides live entertainment in the evening and frequent musical events featuring both traditional and contemporary Hawaiian music.

Among the exhibits in this small military museum are weapons from the time of the Hawaiian wars in the 18th century to the Second World War and the Vietnam War. Also on display are American soldiers' uniforms from the last 200 years, as well as enemy uniforms.

Most interest is doubtless aroused by the old Hawaiian weapons studded with sharks' teeth. These were used in battles between former Hawaiian tribes. The museum also features temporary exhibits. The collection is located in a 1909 building originally built to defend Honolulu and Pearl Harbor.

The collection found at Shangri La is an unexpected one given its setting on a Pacific Island, reflecting Doris Duke's love for both the island and Islamic culture. Shangri La, built as a vacation home to Doris and her husband, is now home to the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art . The collections include approximately 2,500 items that represent some of the best creative work from the Middle East, Moorish Spain, India, and Asia.

In addition to decorative arts made of glass, ceramics, textiles, and other media, several of the museum's best examples are in its architecture. Commissioned by Doris in the 1930s, when she had the house built, several large installations by Moroccan, Indian, and Iranian artists were incorporated into the construction, giving it a truly unique ambiance.

The museum is operated by the Honolulu Museum of Art, which is located nearby in downtown Honolulu. It features permanent collections and visiting exhibits that showcase not only Polynesian art but works from around the world, focusing on Asian art. Collections also include works by Monet and Van Gogh, as well as artifacts from ancient Egypt, Rome, and Greece.

Several evenings per week on Kūhiō Beach, visitors can watch a free hour-long traditional hula dance performed on an authentic hula mound, or pa hula . The ceremony begins with the sound of a conch shell horn and then the lighting of torches, and features local dancers. On the other side of the island, a little over a one-hour drive from Waikiki, the Polynesian Cultural Center is another excellent spot to see traditional dance and customs in action. It is a living history museum, with six villages, each representing the culture of a Polynesian island, including Hawaii, Tahiti, Samoa, Fiji, Tonga, and Aotearoa (Maori for New Zealand). Visitors can enjoy hands-on activities within the center, as well as watch traditional dance and participate in an authentic luau.

Waikiki is packed with history. In fact, Waikiki Beach was the spot where royal Hawaiians would welcome their visitors. You can explore the depths of Hawaiian history in Waikiki with a visit to Iolani Palace in Honolulu.

The land around Iolani Palace is steeped in Hawaiian history. King Kamehameha III built his official residence in 1845 on the grounds here, which served five Hawaiian kings until it was leveled in 1874. It was replaced with Iolani Palace in 1879, which became the home of the Hawaiian monarchs.

Today the palace's first and second floors have been restored and are open for guided tours. On the first floor, visitors will find the Grand Hall, State Dining Room, Blue Room, and Throne Room. The second floor has the private suites of the monarchs, including the room where Queen Liliuokalani was held imprisoned for eight months after her government was overthrown.

If you’re headed to the Hawaiian island of Oahu, there’s a good chance you’ll end up on the streets of Waikiki in one way or another.

This is a tourist hot spot, and it’s also the area where there is a concentration of shopping and hotels on Oahu.

The Waikiki shoreline has a long stretch of beach that is often collectively referred to as Waikiki Beach.

It’s possible to take a walk from one end of Waikiki Beach to the other.

The Diamond Head crater is probably one of the most iconic scenes you see as you’re researching your trip to Hawaii. So of course you need a picture of Diamond Head from afar! 😉

Because of the lighting of the sun, taking a visit to the Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort in the morning will get you a more silhouette scene of Diamond Head you see here. Going in the afternoon will likely get you a more colorful shot.

This is one of the few stretches in Waikiki that you can’t walk on the beach when you’re trying to get from one end of Waikiki Beach to another.

Instead, you’ll be walking on the Sheraton Boardwalk, which is incidentally located right in front of the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel . 😉

Depending on the time of year you are in Hawaii, the path leading to the boardwalk may be closed due to strong waves or erosion.

The Royal Hawaiian Hotel

The Royal Hawaiian luxury hotel is a highly recognizable building when you’re far away.

The bright pink makes it stand out and you’ll be able to point it out when you’re at a distance, like say when you’ve hiked to the summit of the  Diamond Head Crater , or when you’re flying into Honolulu airport .

This is another iconic scene from Waikiki. This statue honors Duke Kahanamoku as an international surfing icon and Ambassador of Aloha. He was an Olympic gold medalist as a swimmer too.

This is located in a relatively central part of Waikiki along the beach near the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort.

You aren’t going to Hawaii just for the beaches, right? 😉

Best Things to Do on Oahu in Waikiki

Waikiki is a neighborhood in the city of Honolulu, on the island of Oahu. As the most popular part of Oahu to stay in, Waikiki has a lot to do but also can feel crowded. We always recommend taking a day during your Oahu vacation to relax around Waikiki to walk the main avenue, Kealakakaua Avenue, and sunbathe and swim on Waikiki Beach. 

Here are the best things to do while you enjoy Waikiki.

1. Where to Escape the Crowds on Waikiki Beach

Waikiki Beach is a 2-mile-long, gold sand beach lined with highrise hotels. I love Waikiki Beach for the beautiful, clear water and views of the iconic Diamond Head. 

There is so much that makes Waikiki Beach famous , hence the crowds flock to this beach. Half of all visitors to Hawaii stay near Waikiki, usually for their first visit (see our first time to Hawaii guide for planning tips! )

Here is how to find a secluded section of Waikiki Beach. Waikiki Beach is divided up into multiple sections or beaches. The far sides of the 2-mile stretch of beach have far fewer people than the areas in the middle, like in front of the Royal Hawaiian or Moana Surfrider hotels.

To escape the crowds in Waikiki, go to Kahanamoku Beach ( click for directions ) near the Hilton Hawaiian Village Resort. Kahanamoku Beach has been rated the best beach in the country by Dr. Beach for its wide, sandy beach and its great spot for swimming. You will also get epic views of Diamond Head. And a good place to see the fireworks, see below!

Our second favorite secluded spot in Waikiki is on the Diamond Head side of the beach. Go to Queen’s Beach ( click for directions ) to find a place for your towel. We like this part of the beach as there is the Waikiki Wall (small jetty), volleyball courts, and shade near the park side of the beach. 

2. Surf Waikiki Beach

Waikiki Beach is well known for its surf break. The long, slow rolling waves are perfect to learn how to surf. You can take surf lessons ( Erica was so much better at surfing than me ) or grab a board for $20 for three hours from dudes on the beach.

The surf breaks, starting on the Diamond Head side, are Publics, Queen’s, Canoes, Populars, Threes, Fours, Kaisers, and Rockpiles. You will easily see where everyone is surfing once you are on Waikiki Beach. 

If you have never surfed before then a surf lesson ( our favorite surf school is at Publics ) is highly recommended to get you started safely.

A good surfboard rental location is between the banyan tree and the Kuhio Beach Hula Mound and the Duke Kahanamoku statue. You will find local vendors renting out surfboards. Bring cash and look for the surf racks.

3. Friday Fireworks

The show is back! Every Friday night the Hilton Hawaiian Village has a 4-minute fireworks show. From June to September, the show starts at 8:00 PM. The show switches to a 7:45 PM start in the fall. 

You don’t have to be a guest at the resort to see the show. Find a nice place on the beach near the hotel. The best viewing will be from Fort Derussy Beach Park ( click for directions ) to Kahanamoku Beach.

4. Acai Bowls at Tropical Tribe

Our favorite acai bowls in Waikiki are at Tropical Tribe. The small cafe with counter service has the best Brazilian acai bowls with fresh fruit in Waikiki. Located on the Ewa Side, near the Hilton Hawaiian Village, look for the small cafe at street level.

5. Fresh Poke at Sato Seafood

There is nothing more authentic than fresh poke when you are in Hawaii. While we love getting poke at local grocery stores like Foodland, Sato Seafood serves up unique and delicious poke bowls right in Waikiki.

Order the Hawaiian Munchies or Spicy Maui Maui. You can’t go wrong with their generous portions and quick service. Eat there or take it a block to the beach.

If Muragame Udon has too long of a line, Sato Seafood is right next door.

6. Japanese Noodle House

Sure the line can be long at Muragame Udon, but it is worth the wait in our opinion. Watch them make the noodles and cook your udon right in front of you. 

Grab a tray, order your udon, and then pick up additional bites like tempura or spam musubi in this cafeteria-style restaurant.

7. Hula and Happy Hour

If you don’t have time to attend one of Oahu’s best luaus, then House Without a Key is a good substitute.

Located in the luxury Halekulani hotel, House Without a Key is an open-air patio lounge serving up amazing mai tais, pupus (appetizers), and a light dinner fare. But we come for world-class hula performances and live Hawaiian music. 

With views of Diamond Head and the Hawaiian band playing under a 100-year-old kiawe tree, this happy hour shouldn’t be missed.

Let’s escape from Waikiki to explore things to do in Honolulu. Honolulu is called the Manhattan of the Pacific with its highrise offices and apartment buildings. We love Honolulu for its culture, nightlife, and food. Such amazing food options due to the Pacific island cuisine.

Our favorite neighborhoods are Kapahulu, Kaka’ako, and Chinatown. We have things to do in each. Plus, don’t forget the culture with trips to ‘Iolani Palace and the Bishop Museum.  

But our first thing to do is to beat jetlag with a hike.

8. Diamond Head Crater Hike

Diamond Head Crater Hike starts inside a 300,00-year-old volcano, about a 15-minute drive from Waikiki. A reservation for the Diamond Head hike is now required. The moderate 0.8-mile hike rises up 560 feet to an observation deck overlooking Waikiki and the east coast of Oahu.

Explore an old military bunker inside the volcano and take amazing photos of Waikiki. Rainbow views are possible with a morning hike. The gates open at 6:00 AM so come on over for those jetlagged travelers.

9. Leonard’s Bakery for Malasadas

Leonard’s Bakery makes it onto all things to do in Honolulu lists and for good reason. Their large, fluffy malasadas live up to the hype. Malasadas are Portuguese donuts with a fruit or chocolate filling. 

The doughy pastries are light, warm, and delicious in the morning with a coffee. The line does get huge at their original location on Kapahulu Avenue just outside of Waikiki.

See if you can order online to skip the line (they discontinue the online service at times) or plan on arriving early.

Another way to skip the line is to visit one of the many MalasadaMobiles they have conveniently located around Oahu. Bring cash for those and they only serve three types of malasadas at them.

10. Ono Seafood

The colorful red building with an art mural on the side is hard to miss from Kapahulu Avenue. Locals flock to this seafood restaurant for poke and more fresh seafood dishes. The no-frills place is relaxing and delicious. 

There are a lot of great restaurants on Kapahulu Avenue such as Rainbow Drive-In and Kono’s. You won’t go hungry on this avenue on the Diamond Head side of Waikiki.

11. Waiola Shave Ice

Shave ice is a must when you visit Hawaii . The fluffy ice and the flavors are a must when it is hot out and it is always a nice, hot temperature in Hawaii. 

Waiola Shave Ice is a classic. While there are few around Honolulu, the one below is the original and a short drive from Waikiki.

12. Honolulu Nightlife

Honolulu is the place to go (the only place to go) in Hawaii for nightlife. The Hawaiian Islands can feel sleepy as most bars and lounges hardly make it to midnight on the neighbor islands. But in Honolulu, you can find hip lounges, wine bars, and even some clubs. 

For a little bar hopping in Waikiki, check out Lewers Street for Roy’s, Yard House, and some dive bars.

Our favorite area to go to in Honolulu is the hip and trendy restaurants and lounges in Chinatown. These award-winning restaurants, like Fete who is a 2022 James Beard winner, have great food and even better drinks. 

Head to North Hotel Street in Chinatown to find the likes of Lucky Belly, The Manifest, Little Village Noodle House, O’Kims, The Dragon Upstairs, Bar 35, The Tchin Tchin! Bar, and so many more.

13. Ala Moana Beach

Ala Moana Beach is the place where locals go in Honolulu for the beach. The large beach park has its own L&L Hawaiian Barbecue, Magic Island Lagoon, and a well-protected beach for kids (keiki). 

Located in front of the Ala Moana Shopping Center, an upscale shopping center with a great food court, and next to Waikiki, Ala Moana Beach doesn’t have the Waikiki crowds and is a good place to take the kids for a beach day.

14. Kaka’ako Street Art

Kaka’ako is an old neighborhood of Honolulu that has been re-developed with condo towers, restaurants, and breweries. We like the breweries for dinner and drinks. But, you can make an evening out of this neighborhood by walking the murals.

Kaka’ako has murals everywhere. Start at Mother Waldron Neighborhood Park and just follow the murals. You can’t miss them.

15. ‘Iolani Palace

The ‘Iolani Palace was the royal residence of the Kingdom of Hawaii. The palace had electricity and running water before the White House. Come to learn about the royal family, the forced overthrow of the kingdom, and Hawaiian history in this well-preserved, stately palace in the heart of Honolulu.

‘Iolani Palace is located in Historic Downtown Honolulu. Across from the palace, you will find Ali’iolani Hale, home to the state supreme court and the famous King Kamehameha The Great Statue. You can take our favorite Pearl Harbor guided tour that includes a tour of historic Honolulu.

16. Historic Chinatown and the Arts District

As I mentioned in the Honolulu Nightlife thing to do, Chinatown is a fun part of the city to explore. A Chinatown walking tour is a wonderful way to hear the rich history and taste the food or go out and explore yourself.

The area has unique architecture and great food from Vietnamese to Chinese to Hawaiian and everything in between. There are also a lot of shopping and art galleries. 

The first Friday of the month is home to a lively street festival. The art galleries turn into lounges and street performers fight for your attention. It is the place to be for First Friday .

17. Best Honolulu Sunset Spot

Tantalus Look is the place to come for the sunset and amazing views of Waikiki and Diamond Head. Located 25 minutes (6 miles) from Waikiki, drive up a windy road to Pu’u Ualakaa State Park. Bring a picnic and a picnic blanket to sit on the lawn overlooking the grandeur of Honolulu and the Pacific Ocean. 

The sunset view is best during the winter but even during the summer, this is worth visiting.

18. Kamehameha Bakery

While everyone is lined up at Leonard’s Bakery just outside of Waikiki, drive over to Kahili Neighborhood for another famous bakery. Get their maladas or one of their many amazing donuts and freshly baked bread.

19. Bishop Museum

The Bishop Museum showcases exhibits on Polynesian culture and natural history. This is our favorite museum in Hawaii. Our kids love the science center where they can go inside a volcano and get hands-on with science. I enjoy the Polynesian voyaging exhibits and then heading to Highway Inn Cafe for a Hawaii plate lunch.

The Hawaii Hall alone is worth checking out with three wood floors featuring Hawaiian history. It reminds me of the great museums in London.

20. Honolulu Helicopter Tours

While we don’t always recommend a helicopter tour in Hawaii due to the weather, the team at Honolulu Helicopter Tours has the best safety record on Oahu. They offer tours for different budgets too. 21. Pearl Harbor National Memorial

Welcome to one of the most popular sites on Oahu ( this is the other one ). Pearl Harbor National Memorial brings thousands of visitors a day to pay their respects, learn about the air raid, and visit the historical sites. 

Pearl Harbor is 25-minutes away from Waikiki so it isn’t in Honolulu but I’ll keep it simple for this list.

Hop in an Uber, Taxi, Lyft, or drive yourself to the visitor center. But, before you arrive make sure you make a reservation for t he USS Arizona. Reservations can be tough to get, especially during the busy holiday season and summer.

You can skip the hassle of driving and getting a reservation by booking a guided Pearl Harbor and Historic Honolulu City Tour with our favorite local tour group. They will pick you up and drop you off at your hotel.

Bags are not allowed in the Pearl Harbor National Memorial. Also, make sure to hop on the free shuttle to take you to Ford Island. Home of the Battleship Missouri Memorial and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum .

Things to Do on Oahu: Ko Olina and Waianae

We lived in Ko Olina, on the leeward side of Oahu, for a couple of years. Ko Olina is at the start of Waianae, the West Side of Oahu. 

Waianae is a residential area of Oahu. Therefore, it is not a place visitors go often and we support that. But, there are some places of note and tours to explore.

22. Ko Olina Lagoons at Ko Olina Resorts

Ko Olina Resorts are known as the home of Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa, but Ko Olina is better known to us for the lagoons. One of the 10 best beaches on Oahu is the Ko Olina lagoons.

We love these lagoons for the calm waters for our kids, proximity to the resort restaurants for lunch and snacks, and the big, empty beaches. 

The lagoons are man-made. Blasted from the volcanic rock as part of the Ko Olina Resorts development, the lagoons are open to the public and ready for your vacation. Arrive before 9:00 AM for a free, public parking spot. See our Oahu itinerary for details.

23. Electric Beach for Snorkeling

Electric Beach made our #1 spot for the best snorkeling on Oahu . The beach’s namesake is due to being located in front of a large power plant (Hawaii Electric or HECO). The snorkel spot is abundant in fish as the fish congregate around the hot water discharge from the power plant. 

This snorkel spot is only for advanced swimmers and snorkelers. It is risky because you have to swim out over 100 yards to the snorkel spot, it is in water that is over 30 feet deep, there can be currents or rough surf, and there are no lifeguards on duty. It is not an easy snorkel spot so swim with a buddy and understand the ocean conditions. 

You will be greeted by a lot of fish making for beautiful snorkeling.

I park at Kahe Point Beach Park. Car break-ins are common in this parking lot so don’t leave valuables or anything in the car.

24. Maili Pillbox (Pink Pillbox) Hike

Pillbox hikes are very popular on Oahu. These are bunkers from the military defenses built to protect the island before and during WWII. We share the history of many of them in this video: All of Oahu’s Pillbox Hikes Explained (plus the history): 5 Honolulu Pillbox Hikes . 

Most of Oahu’s great hikes are located on the windward and east side of Oahu so this one is special. Located on top of Pu’u O Hulu, you can hike the 45-minutes to the pink pillbox, up a steep trail. Beautiful, sweeping views of the Waianae coast will reward you. It is hot and sunny on this part of the island so bring water and sun protection.

25. Oahu’s Best Whale Watching

The best locations for whale watching on Oahu are on the North Shore and Waianae. Waianae is my favorite as you can expect better weather and calmer seas during whale seasons. The annual humpback whale migration to Hawaii is from December through March, 

While Maui is our favorite island for whale watching , Oahu has some excellent viewing also. 

Our favorite whale-watching tour leaves from Waianae Small Boat Harbor. Head out on a power raft for up-close encounters with majestic humpback whales. We like this tour for the fast rafts increase your chances of seeing them (they don’t chase but cover more ground) and their staff of marine biologists that are full of knowledge. 26. Dolphin and Snorkeling Tour

If you can’t make it to Oahu during whale season then a dolphin excursion is your best option. Located at Waianae Small Boat Harbor, the team from Dolphin Excursions Hawaii will take you out to see Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins, Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles, and to epic snorkel spots on the Waianae Coast.

Things to Do on Oahu: North Shore

Time to leave Honolulu and the resorts to get out into the countryside of Oahu. Honolulu is considered town and the North Shore is considered country. Hence, Oahu-founded surfboard company called Town & Country. 

Our favorite area to visit on Oahu is North Shore. Make sure you leave one or two days in your itinerary to see everything. We sure do in our Oahu Wayfinder Itinerary !

Finally, time to head to North Shore Oahu. The home of Jack Johnson, big wave surfing competitions, waterfall hikes, and the best food trucks on the island. 27. Haleiwa Town

Haleiwa Town is the unofficial home base for the North Shore. We love this town for the food trucks, shave ice, and coffee shops. The art galleries and kayak and SUP in the river are also worth checking out.

Leave Waikiki in the morning so you can stop in Haleiwa for coffee at Haleiwa Cafe, Coffee Gallery, or Island Vintage Coffee (a chain but they have Kona coffee and good food). Then continue up the coast to do the things below. Come back to Haleiwa for lunch or dinner at a shrimp truck or food truck.

Did I mention the food on the North Shore? Giovanni’s was the original shrimp truck serving up spicy and buttery shrimp from their signature-covered truck in Kahuku, North Shore.

Check out one of the many shrimp and food truck parks in Haleiwa. You can’t miss them off the main road. Kaimana Shave Ice is located near a large food truck park, so you get two birds with one parking spot.

You will also find more trucks in Pupukea near Waimea Bay (across from Shark’s Cove) and in Kahuku, at the northern tip of Oahu.

29. Waimea Bay for a Beach Day

Waimea Bay is hard to miss as you drive up the North Shore on Kamehameha Highway. The road turns to present the beautiful bay with the bell tower in the background. 

Waimea Bay is probably the best beach on the North Shore. The bay has two drawbacks. Parking is limited in the public parking lot and along the road. Waimea Valley and the church charge for parking which I’ve found very helpful. The other drawback is the bay is calm from May to September but should be avoided during the winter. Big waves and strong currents make it a dangerous place to swim.

Pack a lunch and enjoy a day of swimming and relaxing on the beach at Waimea Bay. You will find lifeguards on duty, showers, and restroom facilities.

30. Waterfall Swim

If you’re looking for a waterfall swim on Oahu, this is the place to go. With many waterfalls being on private land, hard to reach, or dangerous, the 40-foot Waimea Valley waterfall is the place to go.

Waimea Valley is a botanical garden and Hawaiian cultural immersion area. You can spend half a day here at the arts and crafts booths, walking the valley’s gardens, exploring the Hawaiian villages, and swimming in the waterfall. This is a perfect spot for strollers and kids. It is also home to one of the best luaus in Hawaii .

31. Shark’s Cove Snorkeling

Shark’s Cove made our list of the best snorkeling on Oahu . From May to September, the waves settle down for some epic snorkeling in the lava rock-protected lagoon. 

Lifeguards are on duty and there are restroom and shower facilities. A snorkel rental shop is across the street along with food trucks for lunch. 

We like Shark’s Cove for the clear water and the protected lagoon. Make sure the conditions are good for snorkeling before you go out by talking to the lifeguard and checking lifeguard flags. Grab our favorite reef-safe, mineral-based sunscreens before you head into the water.

32. Romy’s Kahuku Shrimp Hut

As we continue up the North Shore, it may be time to stop for fresh shrimp. Just past Turtle Bay Resort are Fumi’s Kahuku Shrimp and Romy’s Kahuku Prawns and Shrimp Hut. These two serve up fresh shrimp from their shrimp ponds directly behind their huts. 

Romy’s is our favorite as we describe in the video below. Stop for a garlic butter shrimp plate before you move on down the road.

North Shore Oahu is full of fruit stands and food trucks. You won’t be hungry as you spend the day up here.

33. Polynesian Cultural Center Lu’au

For many visitors to Oahu, this is the must-see thing to do on Oahu. Pearl Harbor National Memorial and the Polynesian Cultural Center attract more visitors than any other sites on Oahu.

Located near the northern tip of the Oahu in La’ie, the Polynesian Cultural Center is known for its luau dinner but we like it for the Islands of Polynesia. Walk past the luau area and into six island nations of Polynesia. Learn about the culture, games, songs, and stories of Samoa, Tonga, Hawaii, Aotearoa, Tahiti, and Fuji. Things to Do on Oahu: Windward

As we drive over the northern tip of Oahu, past Kahuku and La’ie, we enter windward Oahu. On the windward side, you will be greeted with lush rainforest and towering cliffs of the Ko’olau Range, the remnants of one of Oahu’s two distinct volcanoes.

After North Shore, windward Oahu is my favorite part of the island to visit. 

34. Kualoa Ranch Tours

When we lived on Oahu, the Polynesian Cultural Center and Kualoa Ranch felt too touristy to be worth my time. I regret that decision because they offer such great tours. They are both good places to learn the history of the islands. 

Kualoa Ranch is known as the Jurassic Valley as Jurassic Park and Lost World movies were filmed in part here, plus dozens of other movies. The ranch is a working cattle ranch and farm full of wonderful employees who like to share their stories. 

Visitors to Hawaii make the drive to Kualoa Ranch for the popular tours below, but they have so many more to offer.

35. Kaneohe Sandbar

This place has become very popular in the past few years. Kaneohe Sandbar or Ahu O Laka in Hawaiian is a ridge of sand in Kaneohe Bay that becomes a beach island during low tide. 

The water is turquoise, the sand is white, the bay is calm, and sea turtle sightings are common.

Accessing the sandbar is limited. You can kayak by renting a kayak in Kailua or go out on a boat tour. As the sandbar can be tough to reach in a kayak, we recommend going on a boat tour. Boat tours include lunch, snacks, sunscreen, snorkel gear, and other comforts for a day out on the water.

36. Lanikai Beach

Another one of our top 10 Oahu beaches is Lanikai Beach located in Kailua. Lanikai is known for its long, white sand beach with outrigger canoes parked on it from the local canoe club, and the views of the Mokulua Islands. 

We find ourselves at Lanikai Beach every time we visit Oahu. We recommend arriving early as there are no public parking lots, only street parking. Respect the neighbors by not blocking driveways or making a lot of noise. Spend the day at Lanikai or go on a kayak adventure.

37. Kayak to the Mokes

Kayaking to the Mokulua Islands or the Mokes was our favorite activity to do with friends who visited us on Oahu.

Rent kayaks from the local shop, wheel them to Kailua Beach (another great beach) and make the short kayak trip out to the islands. 

You can rent kayaks and go yourself or you can go on a guided tour. If you’re not a confident kayaker then we recommend the guided tour. Click below to learn more.

38. Waimanalo Beach Park

Welcome to the best walking beach on Oahu. At over 3-miles long with gorgeous views of the mountains and ocean, this white sand beach is worth a trip to the East Side of Oahu. 

Waimanalo Beach Park has abundant public parking, showers, restrooms, and a lifeguard on duty. The currents can get strong during the winter months so check with the lifeguard before heading out.

39. Makapu’u Beach & Lighthouse

Located on the far eastern tip of Oahu, Makapuu Beach and Lighthouse make for a nice morning out with the family. 

Makapuu Point Lighthouse Trail is a paved walking path that takes you up to the top of the point, with views of Makapuu Beach, Manana Island Seabird Sanctuary, and coastal views of Oahu. 

If you have time, head down to Makapuu Beach. It is a tucked-in beach that is nice for relaxing. It is known for bodysurfing so be careful of the surf break.

40. Koko Head Crater Hike

Let’s finish strong with a hike to the top of a volcanic cinder cone. 

• Length: 1.8 miles
• Parking: Large parking lot at the bottom of the hill
• Avoid hiking for sunrise as no parking is available

This is more of a moderate hike, not because the terrain is challenging (there’s no hill to slide down or rocks to climb over) but because the hike is steep. This hike is a workout as you ascend up over 1,000 steps to reach the top. 

While it is a workout, it’s also a fun trail with some pretty amazing views. The steps that you take up to the top are old railroad tracks, which adds to the fun (you’re not just taking stairs up to the top). 

Oahu is the best Hawaiian Island for hiking in our opinion. Explore all of Oahu’s easiest hikes and moderate to advanced hikes .

The Top 10 Things to Do in Waikiki

As one of the most (if not the most) popular places to travel to in Hawaii, Waikiki packs a huge variety of restaurants, shops, hotels, attractions, and landmarks into just three and a half square miles of space. Considering that it's the main tourist hub of the bustling island of Oahu, a fair majority of the state’s 10 million annual visitors will likely find themselves in Waikiki at some point or another. Read on to discover the 10 best things to do in Waikiki.

Hike Diamond Head

The iconic crater that helps characterize Oahu’s skyline is also one of the island's most visited destinations. With its stunning views that sweep across the city and into the ocean, the well-maintained trail to Diamond Head provides the perfect way to start your vacation. The 1.4-mile roundtrip hike isn’t too difficult, and there are handrails present most of the way, along with a few benches for breaks. Plenty of parking is available for $5 per car, though visitors are more than welcome to walk in for $1 per pedestrian. Get there early and don’t forget the sunscreen; the trail doesn't allow much shade and it tends to heat up in the afternoon.

Catch a Hula Show

Thanks to its dense tourist population, some of Oahu’s best luaus can be found in Waikiki. This can come in handy for those who have decided not to rent a car while on vacation, since practically everywhere in Waikiki is walkable. If you want a more luxurious experience, head to Aha’Aina Luau in front of the pink Royal Hawaiian Hotel, or pair your show with a ticket to the aquarium at Diamond Head Luau in east Waikiki. There are plenty of budget-friendly options, too, like the free Kuhio Beach Hula every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

View a Fireworks Show

Waikiki features several large fireworks shows throughout the year for holidays like July 4th and New Year's Eve, but visitors will still have the chance to view a spectacular display outside of these dates. The Hilton Hawaiian Village puts on a free fireworks show by the Hilton Lagoon every Friday at 7:45 p.m. It's open to the public, so come early and grab a spot on the beach in front of the hotel to get the best view.

Take a Ride on a Catamaran

There’s no better way to see Waikiki than from the water, and there are many different ways to do so. You can always book a swanky dinner cruise, but to get a true taste of Hawaii’s laid-back vibe, hop on a catamaran. These boats are super casual, budget-friendly, and always offer a great time. Berthed right in the heart of Waikiki Beach, the Na Hoku II and the Kepoikai II are hard to miss with their brightly colored sails. You can often book a 60-minute or 90-minute cruise on the same day during the slow season .

Visit the Waikiki Aquarium

Don’t let Waikiki Aquarium’s small size fool you. This facility is the second oldest public aquarium still operating in the United States, and is home to a massive family of exotic tropical fish, live coral exhibits, and unique animals like Hawaiian Monk Seals. Take a Surf Lesson from a Beach Boy

Waikiki’s beach boys, a group of watermen who offered surfing lessons and outrigger canoe rides to some of Hawaii’s first visitors, are nothing short of legendary among Oahu locals. Although many of the original beach boys have passed, a new generation continues to honor them with stands outside of resorts still specializing in stand up paddleboarding, surf lessons, and canoe surfing. Perhaps the most recognized is Aloha Beach Services , opened by a first generation beach boy in 1959 and now the longest running beach service business in the area.

Sip a Mai Tai in the Sand

Waikiki’s favorite drink is best enjoyed with your feet in the sand. Royal Hawaiian's beachfront Mai Tai Bar is not to be missed (the historic hotel hired the original inventor of the mai tai, Trader Vic, to come up with the Hawaiian version of the recipe here), but Duke’s and Hula Grill nearby certainly give it a run for its money. Also, be sure to check out House Without A Key —a classic spot tucked away inside the Halekulani Hotel—for a mai tai and a piece of their famous coconut cake.

Go Shopping on Kalakaua Avenue

In between all the restaurants and bars along Waikiki’s main strip, you'll find small shops and big name brands selling everything from cheap souvenirs to designer clothes. The neighborhood's International Market Place was renovated in 2013 into a higher-end shopping mall, but those in the know can still get a taste of 1950s-era Waikiki at Duke's Marketplace, the adjoining open-air market. The Royal Hawaiian Center offers another great inclusive shopping option, while those looking to spend more money can check out Luxury Row .

Hurricane forecasters tracking 2 storms in Pacific. Is Hawaii in danger?

Hawaii is preparing for heavy rainfall and windy conditions from Tropical Storm Hone this weekend.

The National Weather Service (NWS) predicts that Hone will pass south of the Hawaiian Islands and strengthen into a hurricane briefly southwest of Hawaii late Sunday into Monday, the weather service said.  

Weather experts warn that Hone could bring a risk of wildfires, especially if areas experience high winds and no rain.

"If Hone loses organization and some of the rain bands fall apart, the lee sides of the mountains may get very little or no rain and may get a lot of wind instead, which could increase the wildfire danger," Alex DaSilva, AccuWeather’s lead hurricane expert said on Friday.  

The NWS also said that the National Hurricane Center was issuing advisories for Hurricane Gilma. The hurricane is now around 1650 miles east of Hilo, Hawaii, the weather service said. Gilma poses less of a threat to land than Hone and is "expected to weaken considerably before reaching Hawaii", according to Accuweather .

Hawaii prepares for Hone

The island of Hawaii had several alerts ahead of Hone. This included a tropical storm warning, flood watch, high surf warning and a red flag fire weather warning, according to the NWS Honolulu office on Saturday.

In an update Friday afternoon, Hawaii County Mayor Mitch Roth said Hone isn’t likely to cause a public safety power shutoff, or PSPS, for risk of wildfire by Hawaiian Electric, the local energy provider. That’s because high winds, low humidity and dry conditions are typically required for shutoffs, he said in a video posted to social media. Instead, Hone is likely to bring rain.

“It’s a possibility, but not a strong possibility, that there’ll be a PSPS event,” he said.

In anticipation of Hone passing through, state officials also closed campgrounds and hunting areas on the island of Hawaii over the weekend.

“Everyone is urged to use caution and stay informed of current and forecast weather conditions,” a state news release said on Friday. “Additional closures may happen without notice.”

Ukraine war latest: Ukraine keeping close eye on Belarus border as troops amass

Russia has launched several air attacks on Ukraine this week, costing Moscow a reported £1.1bn. Meanwhile, Ukraine says it's keeping a close eye on its border with Belarus after a build-up of troops there in recent days.

A military court in Moscow has placed Pavel Popov, a former deputy defence minister, in detention on suspicion of fraud in the latest of a string of corruption probes of officials tied to ex-defence minister Sergei Shoigu.

The case against Popov, who has served in his role since 2013, is the third investigation into a senior defence official relating to construction work at Patriot Park - a military theme park near Moscow.

The war-themed tourist attraction near Moscow displays a vast collection of Russian and Soviet weaponry and offers visitors the chance to clamber on tanks and take part in combat simulations.

Investigators said Popov, beginning in 2021, had diverted various building materials from the park to his own country house for installation work.

Popov has been detained until 29 October.

He denies guilt, his lawyer told the RIA state news agency.

Popov joins at least a dozen officials who, since April, have been caught up in the biggest wave of corruption scandals to hit the Russian military and defence establishment in years.

In May, soon after the first arrests, Vladimir Putin unexpectedly removed Mr Shoigu as defence minister and replaced him with Andrei Belousov in what was widely seen as a move to ensure tighter management of Russia's vast defence budget.

Russian political commentators said the investigation into Popov was clearly linked to a broader anti-graft crackdown undertaken by Belousov against those with ties to Mr Shoigu.

A Ukrainian F-16 fighter jet was destroyed in a crash on Monday, a US defence official has said.

According to the official, the cause has not yet been determined - pilot error or mechanical failure.

It comes after Russia staged a missile and drone attack on Ukraine on Monday.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Tuesday that F-16 jets were used to repel the attack on Monday and showed good results.

He had announced earlier this month that Ukraine had started flying F-16s for operations within the country, confirming the long-awaited arrival of the US-made fighter jets which Ukraine has been pushing for since the start of the war.

Four nuclear power units at two different power plants in Ukraine were disconnected from the grid during the Russian attack on Monday, Ukraine's presidential office head, Andriy Yermak, reports.

In a statement on Telegram , Mr Yermak said power units at Rivne NPP, in northwest Ukraine, and South Ukrainian NPP in the south, had been disconnected.

What happened on Monday?

Russian forces unleashed 236 drones and missiles in a massive attack on Ukraine. 

Seven people were killed and 15 regions were struck, with explosions heard in the capital, Kyiv. 

Ukraine said hypersonic missiles were used in the assault.

Fighting in Pokrovsk is "exceptionally tough", Ukraine's top commander Oleksandr Syrskyi has said. 

Mr Syrskyi, who has spent several days on the eastern front, also said that Russia was throwing everything it could into its assaults, trying to break through Ukrainian defences.

"Fighting is exceptionally tough," he said, adding that Ukraine had to constantly use unorthodox methods to strengthen its positions.

For context : Russia's army is closing in on Pokrovsk, a critical logistics hub for the Ukrainian defence in the area. 

The region, which had a pre-war population of about 60,000, is one of Ukraine's main defensive strongholds.

Its capture would compromise Ukraine's defensive abilities and supply routes and would bring Russia closer to its stated aim of capturing the entire Donetsk region.

Ukraine says it's keeping a close eye on its border with Belarus after a build-up of troops there in recent days.

Kyiv's foreign ministry accused Minsk last week of concentrating a "significant number of personnel" in the Gomel region near Ukraine's northern border "under the guise of exercises".

It swiftly warned Belarusian officials not to make "tragic mistakes under Moscow's pressure" and withdraw its forces.

The Institute for the Study of War said Belarus's troop deployment was likely intended to divert Ukrainian soldiers from other fronts.

It also assessed that Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko was "extremely unlikely to risk combat with Ukraine that could weaken his regime".

Speaking on television today, a spokesperson for Ukraine's border guard service said it had detected no immediate threats on the border, but that Ukrainian troops were keeping it constantly monitored.

"This is tens of kilometres from our border, at different points – different distances," said Andriy Demchenko.

"What is happening on the territory of Belarus is actively monitored by intelligence units, the ministry of defence and the state border service in order to understand how the situation is changing, how threatening it can be for Ukraine.

"So that all components of our defence forces, which strengthen this direction, have the opportunity to react in time to any actions."

Ukraine is calling on the civilian population in its eastern city of Pokrovsk to evacuate as Russian troops draw closer to its outskirts.

It is very difficult to provide clarity over the tactical progress of the war given the relative paucity of detailed information about progress, challenges and opportunities.  

However, it appears likely that Vladimir Putin's near-term objective of his "special military operation" is to secure Crimea, the Donbas and the land bridge between the two areas.  

This summer, Russia's main effort appears to have been securing the final component of the Donbas, and despite the much-publicised casualty rate being suffered by Moscow's forces - more than 1,000 casualties a day - Russia continues to make slow but steady progress.  

Pokrovsk is a strategically important logistics and transport hub for Ukrainian forces in the region, and Russian forces are now reported to be only six miles away from the town, leading the Ukrainians to evacuate the civilian population.

The Russian president knows that it is very difficult to maintain momentum during the winter months, so he has perhaps 10 to 12 weeks available to achieve his objectives before the winter weather settles in.   

If Russian forces can seize Pokrovsk before the winter, it is possible that Mr Putin will indicate he is ready to negotiate an end to the conflict.  

Depending on the outcome of the forthcoming US presidential elections, that raises the prospect of Mr Putin being rewarded for his brutal invasion of Ukraine, which would have profound implications for global security.

Ukraine's invasion of Russia's Kursk region will soon enter its fourth week, with around 500 square miles of territory captured so far, according to the head of Kyiv's military.

Oleksandr Syrskyi said on Tuesday that around 100 settlements, including the town of Sudzha, were now under Ukraine's control.

In one of his evening addresses this week, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said troops were still expanding their territory in the region.

Here, we look at some key images from the start of the invasion into Kursk.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Ukraine will not forgive Russia "for a single destroyed Ukrainian life" as the country marks the Day of Remembrance of Defenders of Ukraine.

The holiday marks the 10th anniversary of the battle of Ilovaisk, where hundreds of Ukrainian soldiers were killed by Russian troops as they began to withdraw from the encircled town.

"This was a planned, cynical Russian crime that Ukraine will never forget and will not leave unpunished," Mr Zelenskyy wrote on his Telegram channel.

"Today, Ukraine honours the memory of all its defenders. All those who fought for our state, for Ukrainian independence and sacrificed the most precious thing – their lives.

"And we will not forgive Russia for a single destroyed Ukrainian life."

Ukraine was forced to disconnect several nuclear power units from the grid on Monday after Russia's widespread drone and missile attacks on the country.

Kyiv's mission to the International Atomic Energy Agency has said the attack was intended to paralyse the operation of the power generation facilities of Ukraine.

It added that the attacks posed a significant risk to the stable operation of nuclear facilities. 

As a result of the attack, three out of four power units of the Rivne nuclear power plant were disconnected from the grid, it said.

Another nuclear power plant, the South Ukrainian, was also forced to decrease its output "due to fluctuations in the national power grid".

Two named tropical cyclones will pass within a few hundred miles of Hawaii within a week's time before the end of August, something that has only happened once in recent decades.

Residents recorded as Hone passed by the Hawaiian Islands, bringing with it heavy rain, flash flooding and strong winds.

Two named tropical cyclones are slated to impact Hawaii over the next several days, with one passing just to the south of the Big Island late this weekend and another that could close in on the String of Pearls before the end of August. AccuWeather meteorologists expect both to have an impact on the islands. A distant third tropical cyclone may also bear watching.

Tropical Storm Hone passing just south of Hawaii

Hone was named last Thursday as a swirling batch of showers and thunderstorms became better organized. Gusty winds, flooding rain and rough seas are expected to continue across portions of the Hawaiian Islands into Monday as Hone moves to the south.

As of late Sunday night, local time, a peak wind gust of 72 mph (at Kohala Ranch) and rainfall amount of 27.5 inches (Hakalau) was observed so far on Hawaii's Big Island. Over 17,000 customers were without power, as well, according to Poweroutage.us .

Hone became better organized this past weekend and gained wind intensity reaching hurricane strength at 5 a.m. Eastern time on Sunday morning. By Monday morning, Hone lost wind intensity and was a 70-mph tropical storm.

As Hone continues its westward track, wind gusts of 40-60 mph are expected to continue mainly across the western portions of the islands. Winds of this magnitude can bring down trees and cause power outages.

Winds can also increase the fire threat across the islands, especially on the western and southern rain-sheltered slopes of mountains and hillsides. A similar setup occurred last August as Hurricane Dora passed to the south. Gusty winds, drought and dry air triggered a deadly and destructive wildfire that became Hawaii's worst natural disaster.

Heavy rain will continue to occur across portions of the Hawaiian Islands through Monday.

As Hone continues to pull away from Hawaii on Monday, a general 1-2 inches of additional rain can fall, particularly on the windward side of the islands.

This magnitude of rain can lead to flash flooding and mudslides, especially but not limited to the windward—generally the northern and eastern—sides of the hills and mountains as the storm approaches.

As the storm continues to move southwest of the individual islands, shifting winds will bring locally heavy rain to more of the south-facing slopes on Monday.

Even though a direct strike from Hone is not anticipated in Hawaii, the AccuWeather RealImpact™ Scale for Hurricanes on the islands is less than one.

The RealImpact™ Scale factors in more than the Saffir-Simpson Wind Scale for Hurricanes. The Saffir-Simpson scale only measures the wind intensity of the center of the storm and does not account for the size, speed and other impacts even a near-miss from a storm might bring.

Hurricane Gilma to approach Hawaii later in the week

Wind, seas and rain may increase only a few days after Hone, depending on how much cool water in front of Gilma causes the hurricane to weaken. Gilma first ramped up to a major Category 3 hurricane during the middle of last week and restrengthened to a major Category 4 hurricane early Sunday morning, before again losing some wind intensity later in the day. As of early Monday morning, Gilma was a Category 2, 100-mph hurricane.

While Gilma will continue to move in a generally westerly direction and inch closer to Hawaii, the hurricane's track has been shifting and may continue to do so through the week.

The core of Gilma is forecast to pass just to the north and east of the islands with impacts ranging from showers, thunderstorms and gusty winds to ramping up on the Big Island, likely to begin late Tuesday night or Wednesday.

Gilma is expected to weaken considerably before reaching Hawaii, and it is possible that it will be reduced to a tropical depression or wind and rainstorm by the second half of the week.

The combination of both tropical cyclones will likely bring an extended period of rough seas and surf to the islands, which will pose dangers to boarders, swimmers and small craft.

And then there's Hector

East of Gilma is another tropical cyclone that became Tropical Storm Hector over the weekend.

There is a chance this system may track near Hawaii a few days after Gilma swings by. The latest information takes Hector to the north of the islands while losing some wind intensity.

Back-to-back tropical cyclone impacts are extremely rare

Tropical depressions, tropical storms and hurricanes passing near Hawaii are uncommon but not unheard of.

August tends to be the busiest month in terms of tropical threats to Hawaii, with 30 tropical cyclones affecting the islands since official record-keeping began in 1949. The month represents more than 40% of the approximately 70 impacts by tropical cyclones on the islands throughout the year.

Iniki was the most potent hurricane to directly strike the state. Iniki hit as a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale in 1992. The only other hurricane to directly hit the islands was Dot in 1959 as a Category 1.

Two named storms have not passed within 300 miles of the main islands of Hawaii within a week since 1992. In an extremely rare occurrence in September 1992, Iniki was followed three days later by a direct strike by Orlene as a tropical depression. Two systems passed to the south of the islands in eight days in 1994.

Tropical storms and hurricanes do not have to directly strike Hawaii to cause significant danger and damage, which was demonstrated by Dora last August and Hurricane Lane in 2018.
