It’s human nature to fantasise about upcoming holidays on grey days in the office.

Yet if a destination requires hours of travel to reach, travel sickness sufferers face a conundrum. Endure gut-wrenching nausea or ditch the hols altogether?

If you are prepared to combat motion sickness, the answer is neither. According to the Centers for Disease and Control : “Motion sickness happens when the movement you see is different from what your inner ear senses. This can cause dizziness, nausea, and vomiting.”

Travel sickness can occur on any mode of transport: in the car on a train, plane or boat. Unless you plan to swim to your sun-soaked vacay destination, it’s best to be prepared.

To avoid experiencing car sickness before your journey, there are some precautionary steps to take.

How to minimise travel sickness

  • Sit in the front of a car or bus
  • Choose a window seat on flights and trains
  • Lying down, shutting your eyes, sleeping, or looking at the horizon
  • Staying hydrated and limiting alcoholic and caffeinated beverages
  • Eating small amounts of food frequently
  • Avoid smoking
  • Distract yourself by listening to music but avoid screen time
  • Sucking on flavoured lozenges such as ginger candy.

For those struggling with severe travel sickness, speak to a healthcare professional about prescription solutions. For milder but no less distressing sickness, we consulted two medical experts.

Dr Reval Sukkhu and nurse Helen Chetwynd from HCA Healthcare UK suggest three key treatments for travel sickness: “Firstly, travel bands . While their efficacy is unclear, the theory is based on something akin to acupuncture. Travel bands apply pressure to certain point on the wrist. Despite lack of empirical evidence, some people find them helpful. They are suitable for people over the age of 12."

"Secondly, antihistamines. There are oral tablets available over the counter in the UK such as Cinnarizine (brand name, Sturgeron) or Promethazine Teoclate. Individuals should speak to a pharmacist to see what is most suitable for them, as this type of medication can make you drowsy."

"Finally, Hyoscine Hydrobromide. It is thought to work by affecting the inner ear and neurological system to control vomiting. It is available in the form of tablets such as Kwells, Joy-Rides and Travel Calm or patches.”

Discover the best anti-sickness remedies to take before and during travel and jet off with peace of mind this summer.

Product info

  • It targets the organs in the inner ear and nerves that cause nausea.
  • It’s best to take one tablet 20-30 minutes before you start your journey.

What are Kwells travel sickness tablets?

Kwells travel sickness tablets are a fast-acting, melt in the mouth solution to motion sickness. Motion sickness occurs when your brain receives mixed messages about its surroundings; your eyes tell it that your immediate vicinity isn’t moving, but your inner ear tells your brain that you’re in motion. Receiving this conflicting information causes the nausea we refer to as travel sickness. [1]

Kwells tablets contain the active ingredient hyoscine hydrobromide. It targets the organs responsible for balance in the inner ear, reducing the effect of movement on them, as well as the nerves that cause nausea. This stops your ears sending conflicting information to your brain, and should ease the symptoms of motion sickness as a result.

Who are Kwells tablets suitable for?

Kwells motion sickness tablets can be taken by most adults and children over 10 without issue, but you shouldn’t take them if:

  • you’re allergic to hyoscine hydrobromide, the active ingredient in Kwells, or any of the other ingredients;
  • you have glaucoma, a blockage of the intestines (paralytic ileus), narrowing of the stomach outlet (pyloric stenosis), weakened muscles caused by myasthenia gravis, or an enlarged prostate gland.

Also, you shouldn’t take Kwells tablets if you’re taking any of the following medications (unless specifically instructed to by your doctor): Amantadine (an antiviral medication), antihistamines, antipsychotics, antidepressants, linezolid (antibiotics), domperidone and metoclopramide (for nausea and vomiting), or sublingual nitrates (an angina medication).

What doses do Kwells tablets come in?

Kwells tablets come in one dosage, containing 300 micrograms of hyoscine hydrobromide. The tablets come scored down the middle, so you can easily divide this into two 150 microgram doses. Adults can take a single tablet per six hours, as needed, but no more than three tablets should be taken in 24 hours. Children over 10 can take half a tablet or one full tablet every six hours, but shouldn’t take more than three in 24 hours.

A separate version of Kwells is available, called Kwells Kids. Each Kwells Kids tablet contains 150 micrograms of hyoscine hydrobromide. [2]

How to take Kwells travel sickness tablets

Always take Kwells tablets as you’re instructed. In order to get the most out of your Kwells travel sickness tablets, stick to the following instructions:

  • Take one tablet, or give half a tablet to your child, 20-30 minutes before you start your journey. Alternatively, a tablet can be taken as you start to feel nauseous while travelling.
  • Your tablet can be sucked, chewed, or swallowed.
  • You can take up to one tablet every 6 hours, as you need.
  • Never take more than three tablets within 24 hours, or give tablets to children under 10 years old.

How long do Kwells tablets take to work?

Kwells tablets are a fast-acting solution to motion sickness that get to work in as little as 20-30 minutes. Because they melt-in-the-mouth, they’re absorbed by your body much faster than they would be through your stomach, meaning you get relief sooner. [1] Kwells tablets act fast enough that you don’t have to worry about remembering to take them before travelling, you can just take one as you start to feel symptoms.

What should I do if I make a mistake taking Kwells tablets?

You should only ever take Kwells tablets as instructed, and never take more than one every six hours or more than three in a 24 hour period. If you accidentally take too many Kwells tablets, you should seek medical attention immediately. You may experience a rapid, uneven heartbeat, blurred vision, sensitivity to light, drowsiness, the inability to urinate, and hallucinations. Possible treatment includes washing out your stomach, or inducing vomiting to get the substance out of your system.

Cyclizine for sickness

Cyclizine helps to reduce sickness (nausea) and dizziness.

It can be taken by adults and by children over 6 years of age.

The most common side-effects are a dry mouth and feeling drowsy.

In this article :

About cyclizine, before taking cyclizine, how to take cyclizine, getting the most from your treatment, can cyclizine cause problems, how to store cyclizine, important information about all medicines.

Cyclizine is used to treat sickness (nausea), such as that caused by problems affecting the inner ear and balance (including dizziness ), and travel sickness . It is an antihistamine.

Cyclizine helps reduce the feelings of nausea and vertigo caused by problems such as these. It is available from a pharmacy, without a prescription, and can be taken by adults and by children over the age of 6 years.

Some medicines are not suitable for people with certain conditions, and sometimes a medicine can only be used if extra care is taken. For these reasons, before you start taking cyclizine it is important that your doctor or pharmacist knows:

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

If you have any problems with the way your liver works, or if you have heart failure.

If you have increased pressure in your eye, a condition called glaucoma.

If you have epilepsy.

If you have prostate problems, or have been experiencing difficulty passing urine.

If you know you have a blockage in your small intestines.

If you have a rare inherited blood disorder called porphyria.

If you are taking any other medicines. This includes any medicines which are available to buy without a prescription, as well as herbal and complementary medicines.

If you have ever had an allergic reaction to a medicine.

Before you start the treatment, read the manufacturer's printed information leaflet from inside the pack. It will give you more information about cyclizine, and it will also provide you with a full list of the side-effects which you could experience from taking it.

Take cyclizine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you to. It can be taken up to three times a day.

If you are taking cyclizine to prevent travel sickness, take the first tablet 1-2 hours before you are due to travel. If you are going on a long journey, you can then take further doses every eight hours if needed. The tablets can be crushed to make them easier to swallow. If you are giving cyclizine to a child, check the label carefully to make sure you are giving the correct dose for the age of your child - the dose for children aged 6-12 years is half a tablet.

Cyclizine can cause drowsiness and blurred vision. Although this is rare following a single dose of cyclizine, it can occur if it is taken more regularly. If this happens, do not drive and do not use tools or machines. Alcohol will make the drowsiness worse, so it is best not to drink alcohol while you are on cyclizine.

If you are having an operation or any treatment (particularly if it is to test for an allergy), please tell the person carrying out the treatment that you are taking cyclizine.

Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side-effects although not everyone experiences them. The table below contains some of the ones associated with cyclizine. You will find a full list in the manufacturer's information leaflet supplied with your medicine. The unwanted effects often improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine, but speak with your doctor or pharmacist if any of the following continue or become troublesome.

If you experience any other symptoms which you think may be due to the tablets, speak with your doctor or pharmacist for further advice.

Keep all medicines out of the reach and sight of children.

Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct heat and light.

Never take more than the prescribed dose. If you suspect that you or someone else might have taken an overdose of this medicine, go to the accident and emergency department of your local hospital at once. Take the container with you, even if it is empty.

If you buy any medicines 'over the counter', always check with a pharmacist that they are suitable to take with your other medicines.

This medicine is for you. Never give it to other people even if their condition appears to be the same as yours.

Do not keep out-of-date or unwanted medicines. Take them to your local pharmacy which will dispose of them for you.

If you have any questions about this medicine ask your pharmacist.

Report side effects to a medicine or vaccine

If you experience side effects, you can report them online through the Yellow Card website .

Scopoderm Information

Scopoderm patches contain a substance called hyoscine hydrobromide, which is one of the most widely used medications to treat travel sickness. This is due to the ease of application, discretion and long treatment time. Hyoscine is absorbed through your skin via the Scopoderm patch. Each patch contains 1.5mg of hyoscine and can be kept on for up to three days.

Scopoderm patches are effective in treating all kinds of motion and travel sickness. They are especially useful when a long treatment time is required, for example on a cruise or coach trip.

When travelling, it is possible to begin to feel travel sick when there is a conflict between what your inner ear can sense (your balance) and what your eyes can see. When this conflict begins it can make you feel unsteady, disorientated and nauseous. Hyoscine works by reducing this conflict in your brain.

Hyoscine blocks receptors called muscarinic (or cholinergic) in the vomiting centre from receiving messages from the vestibular system (the area that senses balance and spatial awareness). This prevents the internal confusion, which causes the feeling of nausea.

Non-Medicinal Alternative for Travel Sickness

Acupressure Bands - are bands that are worn around the wrist. They are designed to apply pressure to a certain point on the inside of your wrist specifically between the two tendons on the inner arm. A positive for the acupressure bands is that there are no adverse side effects, how ever there is little scientific evidence to show that they are an effective treatment for motion sickness. You should be able to purchase this item from most pharmacies.

OTC (Over the Counter) Alternative Medications

  • Avomine (promethazine teoclate)
  • Stugeron 15 (Cinnarizine)

The medication mentioned above are the 'P' medications we offer at The Independent Pharmacy, how ever there may be slightly different brands in your local pharmacy.

Scopoderm warnings

It's important to always wash your hands after inserting or removing a Scopoderm patch. You should also try to avoid touching the patch whilst it's on. This is because, if you touch your eyes with hyoscine on your fingers, the substance can temporarily blur your vision.

Also, do not drink alcohol or take other anti-sickness medicines whilst using Scopoderm patches.

Provided that you have applied the patch properly, you can swim, bathe or shower with little risk of it coming off. However, it is best not to stay in the water too long.

Do not cut the patches in an attempt to reduce the dosage. This may release a much larger dose in a short time period.

During your consultation, we will determine whether Scopoderm patches are suitable for you. However, speak to your doctor before using Scopoderm patches if:

  • You suffer from any serious gastrointestinal, kidney, liver or bladder disease
  • You suffer from epilepsy
  • You are pregnant or breast-feeding
  • If you have ever had glaucoma
  • Have a history of bladder or bowel obstruction
  • If you've had a bad reaction to hyoscine, or other anti-sickness medication in the past

Scopoderm patches are not suitable for children less than 10 years old.

You should also inform your doctor, before you buy Scopoderm patches, if you are taking any other medicines.

Scopoderm directions

This medicine works best before you start to feel ill, so it's recommended that you put on a patch 5 to 6 hours before travel. However, you can also use the patch during travel to help reduce nausea.

To ensure that you put on the patch correctly, follow these steps:

  • Remove the patch from its seal and peel off the clear, hexagonal plastic backing. Hold the patch by its edge and be careful to avoid touching the sticky side.
  • To put the patch on, find a dry, hairless area of skin behind your ear and press the silver-coloured sticky side in place. Hold the patch there and count slowly to ten.
  • Next, wash your hands thoroughly.
  • When you remove the patch, wash your hands thoroughly afterwards, as well as washing the area of skin where the patch has been.

If the patch comes off accidentally during your journey, throw away the patch, wash the area, as advised above, and put a new patch on behind the other ear.

Each patch lasts for up to 3 days (72 hours). You can use Scopoderm patches for longer journeys – just take the patch off after 3 days and put a new one behind the other ear.

Scopoderm ingredients

Scopoderm patches realease the active ingredient, hyoscine hydrobromide, at a rate of approximately 1mg/72 hours when in contact with the skin.

Scopoderm side effects

As with any medicine, there are potential side-effects. The most commonly reported side-effect is a dryness of the mouth, although this does not last long.

Other side effects include:

  • Sleepiness, dizziness, confusion and hallucinations.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Redness or itching of the skin where a patch has been.

If any of these effects are severe, or if you experience any other side effects, take the patch off and consult a Doctor. Also seek medical assistance if any side effect lasts for over 24 hours, after removing the patch. However, it is rare for the symptoms to persist this long.

Due to the potential side effect of drowsiness, you must not drive or operate machinery whilst wearing a Scopoderm patch.

Scopoderm Patches reviews

Scopoderm patches faqs.

Scopoderm is a prescription-only medicine used to prevent travel sickness. It is in the form of a simple and discreet patch. This is placed on the skin before travel, and remains for the duration of the journey. Scopoderm can control travel sickness for up to 72 hours. The active ingredient is hyoscine hydrobromide.

Scopoderm patches are a straightforward alternative for those who are unable to swallow tablets.

XLS Medical Carb Blocker is a tablet which restricts the absorption of carbohydrates, preventing weight gain. Normally, complex carbohydrates are digested into glucose and absorbed in the intestine. XLS Medical Carb Blocker prevents this breakdown from happening in the body by blocking the activity of certain digestive enzymes.

XLS Medical Carb Blocker also causes the production of insulin to decrease due to the reduced amount of glucose from carbohydrates. This helps to control everyday food cravings, which also contributes to weight loss.

Scopoderm patches will be most effective if applied about five hours before you begin your journey. It will still have an effect if you do not apply the patch until you begin to feel symptoms.

Remove the clear plastic backing from the patch. Apply the adhesive side to an area of skin behind the ear which is dry and hairless. Press down for ten seconds to ensure the patch is in place. Wash your hands thoroughly after applying or removing a patch.

If your patch unintentionally comes off, wash that area of skin and apply a new patch behind your other ear.

Be careful not to touch the adhesive side of the patch before you place it on your skin.

One Scopoderm patch can control travel sickness for up to 72 hours. For journeys that are longer than this, you can remove one patch after three days and place another one behind the opposite ear.

Keep this product out of the reach of children. Do not store at a temperature higher than 25°C.

Consult your GP if you wish to use Scopoderm patches but suffer from any of the following conditions:

  • Kidney problems
  • Impaired liver function
  • Gastrointestinal disease
  • A history of bladder or bowel problems
  • An allergy or intolerance of hyoscine

Take care if using this product if pregnant, breastfeeding or elderly.

Scopoderm may interact with other medicines, including some antidepressants, antihistamines or belladonna alkaloids.

Brolene may cause slightly blurred vision. Avoid driving or operating machinery unless your vision is completely clear. Consult your GP if you notice any vision problems while using Brolene.
