What is a Travel Capsule Wardrobe?

To know what a Spring travel capsule wardrobe is, it is worth outlining what a travel capsule wardrobe actually is!

Generally speaking a travel capsule wardrobe is a method of limiting what you pack for vacation by creating more minimalist packing lists , and thus preventing you from overpacking .

A travel capsule wardrobe uses a few key pieces of clothing to make up several mix and match outfits. Basically meaning that every piece of your wardrobe, can be used in multiple outfits to create completely different outfits.

Now depending on the length of your travels or vacation, the time of year you are traveling and the destination will depend on how many items should be included in your capsule wardrobe. However in my opinion the less the better. But be sure to pack enough so you don’t have to do laundry or buy new items at your destination.

Some ways we create out capsule wardrobes are using the following packing methods:

  • The 54321 packing method
  • the Sudoku packing technique (3 x 3 packing method)
  • . 4 x 4 packing method

Spring Travel Capsule Wardrobe

So now you know what a travel capsule wardrobe is we will look at capsule wardrobe for Spring in particular.

Our Spring packing list and capsule wardrobe is designed to be used in the traditional Spring months of March, April and May in places associated with typical Spring weather. This means Europe, Asia in places like Japan to see the cherry blossoms and of course the USA and Canada.

Note : if you are traveling to the Southern hemisphere Spring is catagorized as September, October and November.

And if you are traveling at another time of year of for a specific type of vacation be sure to check out our other capsule wardrobe packing lists for more specific guidance:

  • Beach Vacation Capsule Wardrobe
  • Cruise Capsule Wardrobe
  • River Cruise Capsule Wardrobe
  • Safari Capsule Wardrobe.

So now you know what a Spring travel capsule wardrobe is how do you begin to put one together?

How to put together a Spring Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Whenever I am putting together a capsule wardrobe I always start making my wardrobe in the same way using a couple of considerations these are:

Color palettes

pink spring clothes flat lay

Having a clear color palette is essential for creating any successful capsule wardrobe. Without a clear color palette your items will not mix and match correctly and therefore will not create multiple cohesive outfits.

Now obviously monochrome is the easiest capsule wardrobe to make as you are so limited in colors. However I find this makes my vacation photos look a bit boring, especially in Spring.

When I put together my own Spring capsule wardrobe I always gravitate towards pastels and florals. This is especially true when I am traveling to see flower such as Kyoto in Spring for cherry blossom season or to see the tulips in Keukenhof Gardens in Amsterdam in April .

My favorite color palettes for a Spring capsule wardrobe are:

  • baby blues.

But this is very much a personal choice and you should pick a color palette that you feel comfortable in.

Plan out your outfits in advance

Whenever I am packing my travel capsule wardrobe, I always lay my clothes out and plan my outfit combinations in advance.

This way you know that everything you have goes in your outfits and can be used multiple times. This is why I like the sudoku method as it is the easiest method of laying out outfits.

Check weather and itinerary before travel

Obviously this is a generic Spring capsule wardrobe designed for use during traditional Spring weather. As such we do make considerations for wet weather. However a word of caution is to always check the weather at your destination 7 days before travel and keep an eye on it up until departure.

That is because you can always get heat waves and cold snaps even in Spring. If this happens to you be sure to check our other seasonal capsule wardrobes such as our Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobe and our Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobe .

Also it is worth mentioning that we have seasonal travel lists for specific destinations. To check your destination and time of travel head to the search function on the top of this page and type your destination and month of travel (i.e. Venice May or Italy April ). This will give you packing tips for local dress codes and weather in more specific detail

Spring Travel Capsule Wardrobe Essential Items

Couple looking at cherry blossoms in Spring

So now you know the principles of how to put together a Spring travel capsule wardrobe we will look at some of our favorite pieces to include no matter the destination:

Best Pants for your spring Travel Capsule Wardrobes

Usually when I start putting together my capsule wardrobes I start with the pants / trousers first. I generally speaking own more tops than bottoms, therefore I like to pick our the pants first as I have more tops to play with.

Athleta Brooklyn Travel Pant

My absolute favorite travel pant of the moment has to be the Athleta Brooklyn Pant. These pants have a stylish but comfortable elastic waistband which for me make them my go to airplane outfit.

But not only that the fact that they do not wrinkle, along with the ability to machine wash and dry make them perfect for traveling.

I like to wear these as part of my airplane outfit which again saves room in your suitcase and means you can try and pack carry on only. They also work well for nights out where you want smarter trousers.

Click here to shop the Athleta Brooklyn ankle pant for travel.

Although we don’t normally have pairs of jeans as part of our summer capsule wardrobe they are absolutely an essential for any Spring packing list. We recommend picking a lighter weight pair if you are traveling in May though as the weather warms up.

But in regards to color I tend to move away from the black jeans I wear in Winter and pick a lighter wash pair. However it is worth noting if you are traveling to Europe in Spring, that you will still want a more tailored pair to fit more in with local style.

Dress / Skirt

BTFBM Women Summer Bohemian Floral Casual Wrap V Neck Ruffle Cap Sleeveless Belt A-Line Pleated Hem Swing Midi Sun Dress (Pink, l)

As you transition into Spring from your Winter attire, you will want to change the skirts and dresses you wear. I usually move away from sweater dresses to wrap dresses. But I still wear them with tights in March.

A dress that can be used for sightseeing in the day but that can also be dressed up at night is a great addition to the capsule wardrobe. Especially if you can add splashes of color with accessories such as jewelry and pashminas.

Best Tops for Spring Travel Capsule Wardrobes

So now you know our favorite bottoms for your Spring travel capsule wardrobe we will turn our attention to tops.

And our first pick has to be:

A basic t shirt is a great staple and an essential of any packing list at any time of year. Now depending on the color scheme you are going for will depend on what color you should have. But in my opinion you can never go wrong with a plain white tee.

For Spring I tend to pack more short sleeve t shirts as opposed to long sleeve ones.

Click here to shop basic tee shirts.

Note: For Europe in Spring I would avoid a graphic t-shirt or slogan tee for several reasons. Firstly they are less versatile so aren’t as easy to combine in your Spring outfit combos. But also they aren’t in keeping with many local European styles.

Amazon Essentials Women's Fluid Twill Short Puff Sleeve Smock Detail Shirt, Raspberry Red Floral, X-Large

For Spring travel I always have a printed blouse with a 3/4 length sleeve with me. These are great for places with dress codes such as Churches in Italy , the Vatican and Sagrada Familia to name a few.

And as an added bonus can look casual with some jeans or be dressed or with accessories for a more smart casual look.

I like to have a patterned blouse as the pants I pack are plain, a patterned top is a great way of adding some texture, color and detail.

Click here to shop printed and patterned blouses.

As well as a blouse, I also like to have a button down shirt with me. Now depending on when in Spring I am traveling, the weather and activities I am doing will depend on the shirt I pack.

However for the most versatile shirt to pack, you really can’t go wrong with an over sized white button-up shirt or with a linen blouse.

Click here to shop shirts for travel.

Best Layers for your Spring Capsule Wardrobe

Layers are important no matter the time of year you travel however these are especially important in Spring when there is changeable weather. I normally try and take 3 top layers and 3 base layers with me when I travel which in Spring usually consists of:

Lueluoye Chunky Crochet Cardigan for Women Long Sleeve Waterfall Open Front Knit Cardigans Sweaters White XXL

A cardigan is essential for this time of year as it can be layered on top of blouses, tops, t shirts and dresses.

You can choose the color based on the palette you have in your wardrobe.

Click here to shop cardigans for Spring.

Amazon Essentials Women's Lightweight Long-Sleeve V-Neck Tunic Sweater (Available in Plus Size), Pink, Large

A sweater is another great day to night transition piece. I particularly like sweaters made of merino wool as they are light and easy to pack, but also look very stylish.

Click here to shop merino wool sweaters.

Although a casual item, my capsule wardrobe is never complete without a hoodie and is often worn as part of airplane outfit.

I tend to wear this for more day time sightseeing as opposed to nightwear.

Click here to shop hoodies for travel.

Best Jackets for Spring Travel

Leather jacket.

Tanming Women's Removable Hooded Faux Leather Jackets (X-Large, Black)

I personally prefer a leather jacket over a denim jacket. That is just because I hate denim on denim and there are always jeans in my capsule wardrobe. However this is just my style.

Click here to shop leather jackets for travel.

Waterproof Jacket

Columbia Women's Switchback Lined Long Jacket, Black, Large

Spring in the northern hemisphere has notoriously changeable weather which includes showers! As such having a lightweight waterproof jacket is a good idea for Spring travel. My favorite type is a waterproof trench.

Click here to shop jackets for travel.

Shoes for Spring Capsule Wardrobes

I often find that shoes are the easiest item to overpack. However for Spring I recommend packing just two pairs of shoes. They are:

ECCO Women's Soft 7 Sneaker, White, 7-7. 5

I never travel without a pair of sneakers. Some of my favorite travel sneaker brands are Hoka and All Birds. BUt ecco are a good brand if you want a sneaker with some waterproofing. However my favorite sneakers of the moment are the Addidas Cloud Foam . These are white sneakers which are very versatile as part of a capsule wardrobe but also are very comfortable for walking long distances.

On top of sneakers I also recommend packing:

Ankle Boots for March

Ankle boots or chelsea boots are great for travel in March. They look smarter for dinners than sneakers and can also cope with cold and even rainy weather if you pick the right pair.

Shop ankle boots here.

However for April and May I would pack a sandal in stead dependent on the forecast and specific location of course.

I usually opt for a sandal over a boot for travel in Late April or May. I only ever pick sandals with good arch support that can cope with long sightseeing days though.

Best Accessories for your Spring Capsule Wardrobe for Travel

The items that are included in this section are definitely nice to haves rather than Spring travel wardrobe essentials. However, packing at least one of the below items can really help transform your outfit and make it pop.

Some of our favorite Spring travel accessories include:

Pashminas are my number one  travel essential for women  as they are so versatile as a great layering piece and are always part of my perfect Spring capsule wardrobe. They can be used as an extra layer in the cooler weather or even as a scarf, and can also make outfits more modest at religious sites. And of course they are a great day to style an outfit differently for a day to night transition.

Traveling with jewelry can feel a bit like a minefield especially if you are worried about traveling with expensive or precious jewelry.

The type of jewelry you travel with is really a personal choice about what you feel comfortable with. However we think even traveling with some costume jewelry is a good idea to help you make your capsule wardrobe outfits look a bit different.

Crossbody Bag

Travelon Anti-Theft Classic Messenger Bag, Black, 9' x 12.5' x 3.5' Center Height:9.5'

A crossbody bag anti theft type is actually always on my packing lists especially for traveling in European cities such as Rome and Barcelona which do have pickpocket problems.

I find these types of bags give me a bit more peace of mind when traveling as they make it harder for pickpockets to get into. When selecting a crossbody bag I would pick something in a neutral color such as brown, black or navy depending on the palette of your capsule wardrobe and think about one that can be sued throughout your seasonal capsule wardrobes.

Shop crossbody bags here.

Note: a tote bag is also handy for souvenir shopping too.

Again, a hat is by no means an essential but they can transform an outfit and can make for some great instagram worthy photo. Let’s face it who hasn’t posed at a famous landmark with a hand on their hat?

We like the floppy wide brimmed hats in a color that complements rather than matches your capsule wardrobe colors is what I would suggest

We hope this has helped you put together your own Spring Capsule travel wardrobe! And we would love to hear about what you pack for Spring in the comments belows

I'm Always Catching a Flight, and I Swear By This Travel Capsule Wardrobe

spring-travel-capsule-wardrobe-298348-1646665083768-main

This is your sign to  book that flight. Spring is the best time of the year to catch the travel bug and add a few vacations to your calendar. The winter hibernation is beginning to come to a close, and you're likely ready to go out and about again. I recently took a bicoastal flight to visit family and have to applaud my packing skills. For once, I truly had everything I needed and found it easy to get out the door every morning while living out of my suitcase. And I certainly didn't overpack. I wore nearly every item that I brought along with me.

How did I do it? The pieces you'll find in the below  capsule wardrobe ended up laying down the groundwork. I then topped off my suitcase with a "statement piece" for every day to  build outfits around. I honestly could have gone a month without coming back home since there were so many outfits that I could make out of what I ended up packing, so I have to share with you the ultimate spring capsule wardrobe, tested and approved by me.

spring-travel-capsule-wardrobe-298348-1646694564754-main

1. Trench Coat

You'll never regret buying a trench coat. I've been wearing mine for a year or two, and I know we have a lifetime together to look forward to.

Topshop + Editor Long Trench Coat

I'm calling this the perfect trench coat that will never go out of style.

H&M + Cotton Trench Coat

Spoiler alert: This is the next trench coat I'm buying.

Burberry + Kensington Trench Coat With Detachable Hood

Paddington would approve.

& Other Stories + Relaxed Trench Coat

Pastel, please.

Speaking of outerwear, you also can't spend your week away without a good blazer. For me, something that feels slightly different than what everybody else is wearing is a standout in this category.

Something Navy + Classic Blazer Tan Combo

You need this.

Reformation + Veda Bowery Leather Blazer

I've seen this blazer go out of stock multiple times.

H&M + Single-Breasted Jacket

An H&M blazer always feels so luxe when it arrives.

Jaquemus + La Veste D'Homme

The oversize fit wins again.

3. Midi Dress

I feel like nothing looks more elegant than a sophisticated midi dress. While I love my minis, choosing this style for my travels left me with no regrets. It's so easy to throw on before you head out for your adventures.

Who What Wear Collection + Tiler Long Sleeve Dress

I felt so chic in this.

Staud + Wells Stretch Cotton Poplin Midi Fit & Flare Dress

My next buy.

Faithfull the Brand + Trapani Cutout Linen Midi Dress

You know how I feel about cutouts.

Treasure & Bond + Shirred Long Sleeve Midi Dress

Wearing white on vacation is a must.

4. Wide-Leg Trousers

I've said this before, and I'll say it again: Wide-leg trousers are so elevated. When getting dressed for my flight, I almost pulled on sweatpants but talked myself into loose trousers, and I was so glad I did. I got many compliments without ditching comfort.

Totême + Wool-Twill Wide-Leg Pants

This color is everything.

Reformation + Amelie High Waist Wide Leg Stretch Cotton Jeans

Denim works too.

Open Edit + Cargo Wide Leg Pants

I could talk about cargo pants for days.

Loulou Studio + Noro Leather Wide-Leg Pants

I need these.

5. Retro Sneakers

When traveling, you can't forget a good pair of sneakers. I like to pack a pair that feels stylish but could also work for a light jog. This way, I don't have to bring two pairs of sneakers with me. Retro is the trend fashion editors are unanimously loving right now, so shop the below picks.

Tretorn + Rawlins Retro Sneaker

Cool girl, check this out.

New Balance + 997H Sneakers

Can't believe these are still in stock.

Tory Burch + Hank Sneaker

Mouth is watering.

Adidas x Wales Bonner + Sneakers

Any Adidas collab quickly becomes an obsession of mine.

6. Wearable Heels

I love my sneakers, but nine times out of 10, I'm going to wear heels. My legs deserve some emphasis, and heels obviously take any look to the next level. Comfort is definitely important here because you sometimes don't come back for hours when you leave your hotel for the day. You're in good hands with the below picks.

Open Edit + Cora Heel Sandal

I just ordered these.

Staud + Frankie Ruched Sandals

My Staud heels never cause me pain.

Vince Camuto + Semtera Block Heel Slide Sandal

Pastels for spring? I know, quite original of me.

Manolo Blahnik + Hangisimu 70 Embellished Satin Mules

I dream about these shoes.

7. Shoulder Bag

You're on vacation, so you deserve to be hands-free. Shoulder bags have my heart and soul right now. I don't leave the house without one. I'm loving a strong silhouette and shape to make it feel elevated.

Neous + Phoenix Leather Shoulder Bag

I've had my eye on this guy.

Jacquemus + Le Bambino Long Bag

Jaquemus does it again.

Biosa + Alligator Pattern Hobos Zipper Handbag

I'm taking every color home with me.

Burberry + Leather-Trimmed Checked Canvas Shoulder Bag

We love to see a designer bag with an excellent price point.

8. Statement Blouse

Don't we all love a good top? Ruching, puff sleeves, cutouts, and saturated colors make them even better. Having one on hand is a must, especially when you have multiple bottoms you can pair it with.

Reformation + Fern Ruffled Gathered Peplum Top

I can always count on Reformation to make a good top.

WAYF + Avalon Puff Sleeve Bustier

When a corset and puff sleeves meet, it's love at first sight.

H&M + Crop Top

A good crop top for you beachgoers.

Ulla Johnson + Milla Top

It's not a want—it's a need.

9. Polished Jeans

And I must leave you with a good pair of jeans. If your current collection is missing a polished pair, then you're in luck. When I say polished, I mean a pair of jeans that can easily feel dressed up when you add tailoring and kitten heels. The below picks are pretty good.

Frame + Le Italien High-Rise Straight-Leg Jeans

Loving dark wash right now.

Wandler + Poppy Straight-Leg Jeans

A unique shade of blue.

Levi's + High Waist Straight Leg Jeans

Kaia Gerber  has this pair.

H&M + Wide High Ankle Jeans

It's the frayed hem for me.

A Spring Travel Capsule Wardrobe Based on Your Trip Length

Spring Travel Capsule Wardrobe minimalist

In this Article

Fine. I’ll admit it. I’m a chronic overpacker. Actually, a reformed overpacker.  Thanks to the streamlining powers of a spring travel capsule wardrobe, I now pack what I need and leave the rest.

If you’re ready to do the same, the spring wardrobe essentials below are just what you need. Learn how to build your travel capsule wardrobe and explore example closets for weekend, 10-day, and 2-week trips.

WHAT IS A SPRING TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE

A spring travel capsule wardrobe is a thoughtfully selected group of versatile clothing items designed to mix and match effortlessly, providing you with a range of stylish outfits for your trip . Typically consisting of 10-30 pieces, a travel capsule wardrobe includes essentials like breezy tops, comfortable bottoms, and light (wrinkle-resistant) outerwear suitable for milder weather.

Embracing a capsule wardrobe  helps you avoid overpacking while guaranteeing you have what you need for chic outfits. What could be better?

WHY BUILD A SPRING TRAVEL WARDROBE

As a frequent traveler, I’ve experienced the challenges of packing all too often. Here’s how a spring travel capsule helps:

Benefit 1: Simple packing process . Packing becomes a breeze when you have a curated set of clothing that effortlessly complements each other.

Benefit 2: Less luggage to carry . Embracing a spring travel capsule wardrobe means saying goodbye to unneeded clothing and bulky suitcases. Enjoying the freedom of traveling light. Well, lighter.

Benefit 3: Effortless outfit building . Capsules are built to mix and match. The result? Each combination you pull out is a winner. Trust me, it’s a game-changer for effortless and chic outfit choices.

Need a simple packing process?  Check out my travel capsule wardrobe steps here.

HOW TO BUILD A SPRING TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE

Consult your itinerary.

First things first-  look at your travel plans and the expected weather at your destination. Consider the activities you have in mind, whether it’s exploring cities, hiking, or enjoying beachside strolls.

My advice – break your planned activities down to learn how you’ll be spending the bulk of your trip. Then use this to inform what you’ll bring.

SELECT YOUR COLOR PALETTE

Even a minimalist spring travel capsule benefits from a carefully chosen color palette that aligns with your style. For the spring season, soft greens, blues, and floral prints look lovely.

But you know yourself best so select hues that complement your skin tone.

Need help? Here are  6 ways to choose a color palette that suits you .

minimalist capsule wardrobe

CREATE YOUR CORE TRAVEL CLOSET

Now, let’s delve into the essential elements of a spring travel capsule wardrobe.

Build your core closet by focusing on three key sections: foundational, mid-layer, and outerwear.

Select Foundational Pieces:  Begin with breezy and comfortable undergarments, opting for lightweight tops and breathable materials. Include items like airy tees, polished trousers, and comfortable shorts as part of your foundational layer, providing the necessary comfort for springtime activities.

Select Mid-Layer Pieces:  Elevate your ensemble with stylish mid-layer pieces such as lightweight sweaters, cardigans, and versatile blouses. These items offer just the right amount of warmth for cooler spring evenings. Choose pieces that can transition easily from day to night.

Select Outerwear Pieces:  Given the unpredictable nature of spring weather, incorporate a mix of light outerwear options into your capsule wardrobe. Think about essentials like trench coats, denim jackets, or stylish windbreakers. That way, you’re prepared for varying conditions.

CREATE OUTFITS

One thing I won’t shut up about is how versatile capsule wardrobes are. Now that you have pieces, mix and match them to create outfit options for different activities. Casual outfits are a must. A few dressy ensembles are also needed. Hiking, events, swimming, and other activities may call for other looks. So use this time to build.

TEST YOUR CAPSULE

Before finalizing your packing, try on the outfits you’ve planned. Ensure each piece feels comfortable and suits the vibe you’re aiming for during your spring travels. If something doesn’t quite fit, swap it out. While the edit phase may not be mandatory, it’s a valuable step, especially if you’re new to spring travel capsule wardrobes.

2-Week Capsule Packing List

Bottoms (6):, outerwear (4):, how do you pack for a spring trip in a carry-on.

If the thought of fitting all your spring essentials into a modest carry-on seems daunting, fear not. Here are my tips for effortless spring packing.

STEP 1: MAP OUTFITS TO ACTIVITIES

Commence your packing journey with a clear understanding of the activities and events that will fill your spring days. Whether it’s strolling through blooming gardens, exploring city streets, or enjoying al fresco dining, tailor your wardrobe to accommodate each scenario.

STEP 2: CREATE LAYER LEVELS

Maximize space by planning a three-tier layering system in your suitcase:

  • Base Level: Lightweight tops and shorts or skirts.
  • Mid Level: Sweaters, blouses, and tops.
  • Outerwear: Jackets, blazers, and vests.

I followed a similar pattern when packing  my Hawaii capsule wardrobe  – but with fewer outerwear pieces.

STEP 3: ROLL SMALL, FOLD LARGE

Optimize space by rolling your smaller clothes instead of folding them. Not only does this save room, but it also minimizes wrinkles in your fabrics. For larger items like jeans and coats, folding will be a better use of space. You can get the rundown on how to  fold for maximum space saving here .

Follow these and you’ll breeze through your spring travels with a stylish and compact carry-on.

HOW MANY PIECES SHOULD BE IN A SPRING TRAVEL WARDROBE?

When crafting your spring travel wardrobe, the ideal number of pieces depends on the duration of your trip. To pack enough spring wardrobe essentials to fit your journey, follow this guide:

Weekend Getaway (2-4 days) : Opt for a slim spring travel capsule wardrobe ranging from 10-15 pieces.

10-Day Trip:  Aim for a slightly expanded capsule of 12-18 pieces for a 10-day adventure.

Two-Week Adventure:  For a more extended two-week expedition, consider a capsule wardrobe within the range of 20-25 pieces.

TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE FAQS

The 5-4-3-2-1 capsule is a minimalist approach to packing that provides a simple wardrobe for a trip. The breakdown is:

  • 5 Tops : Include a combination of tops such as shirts, blouses, sweaters, or T-shirts. These should be versatile pieces that can be easily mixed and matched.
  • 4 Bottoms:  Choose four bottoms, which can include pants, skirts, or shorts. Aim for variety and versatility to complement the selected tops.
  • 3 Dresses or Jumpsuits:  Opt for three dresses or jumpsuits that can be dressed up or down for different occasions.
  • 2 Outerwear Pieces:  Select two outerwear items, such as jackets, cardigans, or blazers, to provide layering options for varying weather conditions.
  • 1 Pair of Shoes:  Limit your shoe selection to one versatile pair that complements the chosen outfits and suits the activities planned.

Spring packing may involve lighter layers, but bulky items can still be managed:

  • Vacuum-Sealed Bags:  If you will have access to a vacuum hose at your Airbnb or hotel, then use one to compress items like sweaters or jackets, maximizing space in your carry-on.
  • Wear Bulky Items:  Put on your chunky shoes or a light jacket when heading to the airport. While it may be a minor inconvenience during security checks, it frees up valuable space in your luggage.

For some travelers, packing light equates to a vacation of repeated outfits. Luckily, this doesn’t have to be true. By focusing on versatility, you can mix and match items to create countless outfits from just a few items. Keep reading to discover versatile packing at its finest and the importance of a travel capsule wardrobe.

The Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Written By: Maggie Fogg

As avid travelers, we firmly believe in packing light (as light as possible, in fact). Flying with just a carry-on and packing cubes can save tons of time and energy – and help you side-step some major headaches, including lost baggage and heavy suitcases you have to drag up a flight of stairs.

But when you only have a small suitcase, and as a result – only a few pieces to work with – figuring out what to pack and how to plan outfits can be tricky.

How do you keep your wardrobe incredibly limited without surrendering your style? How do you pack only a few key items, while maintaining versatility in your outfits?

Working from a capsule wardrobe is your best bet. Sticking with basic separates in neutral colors goes a long way for creating a variety of outfits with limited items.

If you are packing for a combination of business and pleasure in the same trip, it becomes all the more important to choose well-made styles that can be dressed up or dressed down with a few accessories.

How do you build a tight wardrobe without adding too many pieces? How do you keep your suitcase lean without choosing only safe, boring and basic options – and steering clear of going too far the other way, packing stylish pieces that you’ll only ever end up wearing once?

Let’s look at a few essential tips…

And don’t worry. A capsule wardrobe doesn’t need to be made of  dull all-black outfits . You can use the guidelines below to create a versatile travel wardrobe featuring a variety of clothing styles ( this  is how to mix and match prints).

Read this to learn how to pack light stylishly  for any destination!

The answer is to follow one simple rule – the rule of 3. This is more than wearing every piece you pack at least 3 times. Pack all items with the intention of wearing each item in a variety of outfits that work in at least three different occasion types.

This could be dressy, professional, and casual. Or it could be sexy, relaxed, and polished. It all depends on your lifestyle and the nature of your trip. When you consider using each piece with this kind of versatility, you’ll be able to build a stylish capsule wardrobe for any trip, and have tens of great outfits on-hand for any occasion.

Choose from one of eight  travel capsule wardrobes to help you plan for your trip!

OUTFIT 1: Necklace | Tank Top | Jeans | Bag | Sandals   OUTFIT 2: Hat | Necklace  |  Shorts | Sandals   OUTFIT 3: Blazer | Necklace | Pouch  | Skirt | Flats

The Travel Capsule Wardrobe: One Piece, 3 Ways

Take, for example, a pretty tank top like the wine-colored one shown above. It can be paired with a relaxed skirt and a blazer for a casual business event.

However, just as easily, it can be dressed up for an evening out on the town with a slim pair of jeans and a cool rocker-inspired choker and cross-body bag .

And third, the tank looks just as stylish with a beach babe pair of cut-off denim shorts, boho-inspired travel sandals and a straw hat – on point for a summer musical festival.

Take a look at this post to see how you can make 3 weeks worth of outfits with just eight pieces of clothing!

The Travel Capsule Wardrobe: Guidelines for 3 Uses

Now that you know how to use one piece in three different ways, follow these guidelines to make the most of your outfits.

Be Meticulous With Fit

Stick to flattering, figure-skimming silhouettes. Avoid anything with too tight of a fit, as it won’t appear relaxed or chic. Likewise, avoid anything with a loose fit since it can read as sloppy and unpolished. Don’t be afraid to tailor your clothing, especially when it’s something you absolutely love!

Stick to Classic Styles With a Hint of Trend

Choose fairly neutral colors and simple cuts and patterns for versatility and longevity, but look for unique twists that add visual interest. This could be lace detail, embroidery, funky zippers – anything that expresses your personality.

File Into 3 Occasion Buckets

When you’re shopping for new items or pulling items from your closet to pack, mentally file each item into its occasion bucket. Is it sexy, relaxed, and girly? Or is it business-casual, classic, and refined? Hint: this rule also works really well outside of travel packing for your everyday wardrobe, too.

Don’t Forget to Map Your Outfits

Particularly with separates, make sure you can pair each item with several other items you’ve packed. It doesn’t help you if you can wear a cute embroidered blouse to the museum, a nice dinner, and on the plane but haven’t any bottoms you can pair with the top.

Have Fun With Accessories

Follow the same rule of 3 with accessories, including bags, shoes, jackets, and jewelry. Shop for high-quality, versatile pieces that are fairly classic in design but have a fun flair. For shoes, all you need are three pairs: one for sightseeing, one for a special activity, and a bonus pair.

These are the most cute and comfortable shoes for travel !

creating-a-travel-capsule-wardrobe

OUTFIT 1: Blazer | Dress | Necklace | Crossbody | Flats   OUTFIT 2: Hat | Sunglasses | Handbag |  Shoes   OUTFIT 3: Jacket | Earrings | Lipstick | Pouch |  Sandals

For example, this black and white striped dress is modern and airy with a slightly French nod. It can be dressed up for a summer night with bold earrings and a trendy belt. It also pairs well with polished accessories – like a cream blazer and ballet flats – for a cultural outing. Or, pair the dress with white sneakers , a summer hat, and a super-cute canvas tote for a breezy look to wear when visiting a local farmers market.

Ultimately, the accessories help give this dress a different feel for each occasion, but the guidelines above are used for each outfit. Each of the accessories are basic in their feel, but they have a trendy or stylish twist and can be paired with other outfits for other occasions.

With this simple rule, you can streamline your travel packing, change the way you look at your everyday wardrobe, and transform how you shop in the future.

TRAVEL STYLE

Wardrobe basics combine to create stylish and comfortable outfits for a spring vacation

I really struggle with packing so decided that the simplicity of a spring capsule wardrobe could be the answer to traveling light and looking stylish on a spring getaway.

I’ve scoured my favorite retailers, as well as my own closet, to come up with a simple yet chic collection of spring BFF’s (best fashion friends) – pieces that will carry us stylishly through a week in Paris, Prague or Pasadena.  I believe a capsule wardrobe can work for anyone. By choosing a combination of classic pieces, and adding a few accents, you can mix to maximum outfit effect this spring.

Even better, I’ve created this spring capsule wardrobe to fit into a carry-on bag, if you wish to travel light. I recently traveled with a carry-on to Europe and it was wonderful to not have to worry about a missing checked bag.

Finally, since these pieces are mostly versatile classics, you will turn to them again and again at home as well.

25+ Chic Outfits with 15 Pieces

A woman wears 12 different outfits from her spring capsule wardrobe of 15 pieces. Colors are mostly navy, white, pink and a couple of black items.

Spring Travel Capsule Wardrobe - The Pieces

CROPPED JEANS ~ MAXI SKIRT ~ TROUSERS ~ BLAZER ~ CARDIGAN SWEATER ~ PULLOVER SWEATER ~  COTTON SHIRT (long-sleeved) ~ COTTON SHIRT (short-sleeved) ~ T-SHIRTS ~ TANK  ~ DRESS ~ TRENCH COAT

MULE LOAFERS ~  SLIDE SANDALS ~ SNEAKERS

Spring Capsule Wardrobe Color Palette

For spring, I chose navy and white. From there, I layered in colorful pieces: a dress and skirt in shades of pink, and a green scarf. I also added two black basics. That created a spring wardrobe with enough color to make it interesting but it was still easy to combine the pieces.

Does it have to be colorful? No. Color or neutrals — your choice. The one exception is a safari where it’s better to stick to neutrals. See What to Wear on Safari.

To create a color palette, start with neutrals, then layer in color. Colors can vary by personal preference and the season. (If you’ve found your way here in fall, explore my Autumn Capsule Wardrobe for Travel .)

In the photos below, you will see the spring capsule with the navy and white items and then with the colorful pieces added in.

A capsule wardrobe for spring starts with a neutral palette of navy and white. Pictured are a flat lay of navy blazer, denim jeans, blue and white scarf, white shirt, navy cotton cardigan sweater, striped sweater and striped mariniere tee shirt.

This concept can work with any color palette. Some other examples: brown and cream plus blush and forest green. Or black and white plus avocado and coral. If you have no idea where to start, pick a favorite scarf or patterned blouse — make those colors your palette.

Spring Capsule Wardrobe - The Essential Pieces

1. the cropped jean.

travel wardrobe spring

Cute, comfy and ready for long travel days — the cropped jean is a perfect staple in your spring capsule wardrobe. The warmer weather brings the chance to let our ankles show, but the jeans don’t have to be cropped; any favorite pair of denim will do. If you prefer a classic length my current favorite denim are the Way-High by Everlane ; I just ordered them for myself.

The jeans in my capsule are the Emma High-Waisted Crop by Citizens of Humanity (pictured). They may be hard to find now, but similar styles are everywhere (and listed just below).

I like high-waisted jeans. If you don’t, pick a mid-rise pair instead. Jeans are very personal, so grab any favorite pair and let’s explore the many ways we can style them for our spring vacation.

Susan in cropped jeans and a black shirt, and holding sunglasses

For a tapered crop, I like Boden’s High Rise True Straight Jeans, which come in several colors. I own several items by Boden and love them all.

It can be hard to order jeans online. If you prefer to try them on (very helpful for me), I suggest Madewell. They have many styles in store and are relatively well-priced and often have sales.

Levi’s are another great option, I own three pair and they are typically under $100. For an ankle length — great for spring  — I have my eye on the Ribcage Straight Ankle Women’s Jeans.

BUDGET PICK: This well-priced pair by Land’s End comes in white and two denim washes: Women’s Recover High-Rise Straight.

2. Lightweight Trousers

Lightweight wide-leg trousers in beige

After your jeans, this piece will be fundamental to your capsule wardrobe. Choosing the right trousers is important because they have to be comfy enough for wearing all day, and stylish enough to dress up in the evening.

My wide-leg trousers are by Rag and Bone. They are a couple of years old but I am listing several options below. This is where a search of your closet might produce something that could work. Any lightweight pants in a neutral color, that you feel good in, are a winner.

If you’d like to buy something, I am listing a few ideas below.

Susan Heinrich wears trousers and a striped t from her spring capsule wardrobe

Everlane make quality, well-priced items. My current favorites are the Way-High Drape Pant . I bought them in the Sandstone color and they work with sneakers and a tee, or I can dress them up with a blouse. The fit is very flattering and they come in two lengths. I am 5’6″ and ordered the 30″ inseam which is the perfect length for me. If you are taller you could go with the 32″.

Their  Tencel Way-High Taper Pant  in Ash Brown would also be lovely for spring. They look like dress trousers but are lightweight and machine washable.

I also own three pants from Athleta, all fantastic for travel because they feel like yoga pants but look like trousers.  The Brooklyn Wide-Leg Pant is very similar to the style to mine. They will be your new favorite travel pant.

Spring Capsule Wardrobe - Trousers

3. the maxi skirt.

A pink pleated maxi skirt

I take a maxi skirt on almost every warm weather trip. I like the simplicity of it and think the style is flattering on many women. This is a great piece for dressing up in the evening but is also cute and comfy for a day of sightseeing with sneakers and a tee.

For my spring travel capsule color palette I picked a bright skirt. You could also select a neutral skirt — solid bottoms can simplify combining outfits. I am also loving green for spring and have ordered this A-line style from Boden to try out, the Isabella Skirt .

Any skirt that you like can work as long as it goes with several of your tops and either of the sweaters or the blazer. (Examples in the photos below).

Susan is in a spring travel outfit using the skirt in this capsule - it's paired with a black tee and she is wearing sunglasses and sneakers.

The skirt pictured is by Lucy of Paris from a few years ago.

Quince also has a very nice Washable Silk Midi Skirt that my friend has and loves. The lilac or the navy would be nice for spring. I own many items by Quince; the quality and prices are great.

If you prefer something more sporty, I like Athleta’s Stride Midi Skirt , violet or black. I have many Athleta pieces I travel with.

4. Cotton Cardigan Sweater

A navy cardigan sweater is a classic addition to any capsule wardrobee

To V or not to V, that is the question. I chose a navy v-neck cardigan for this spring capsule wardrobe, but a crewneck is equally nice as a versatile staple. I like that a v-neck is the perfect shape for a statement necklace without fussing with the buttons and neckline. My sweater is from Banana Republic and I’ve had it for years. Several options are linked below.

J. Crew Factory has a classic navy crew neck cardigan that is well-priced: Classic Cotton Cardigan Sweater .

This one at Banana Republic Factory has a deeper  V than mine and is also affordable: the Forever Cardigan in Preppy Navy .

And this lovely relaxed-fit cotton cardigan by Everlane, the Organic Cotton Cardigan, comes in three colors.

5. Pullover Sweater

Striped cotton sweater for spring travel

What says spring in Paris, or anywhere else, more than a striped sweater? It makes a statement, yet stripes are a classic. I might even call them a neutral. If you aren’t as striped-obsessed as I am, pick any sweater you like. It only has to work for daytime in this capsule, but if you want to go with something more versatile that you can dress up, that works too. Make sure it goes with either your trousers and/or skirt as well.

I am wearing the Leontine sweater by the French brand Sézane. It’s available in multiple colors; if your favorite is out-of-stock, check back as Sézane restocks frequently. Madewell also has a lovely striped sweater, perfect for a spring wardrobe, and it comes in two colors: the Conway Pullover Cotton Sweater.  It is an oversized style, so size down for a more traditional fit.

For more French style inspiration, you might enjoy my story: French Wardrobe Basics.

A navy blazer is a staple in a spring capsule wardrobe for vacation to Europe

Since my spring capsule wardrobe was created around a navy and white palette, I chose a classic navy blazer. If I am traveling to Europe in spring, I am packing a blazer. If you were going somewhere warm, you could opt for linen instead, navy, white or beige are all nice. You could also pick a blazer with a bit of pattern, but in that case I would choose a solid skirt that works with it.

I like the classic fit of J Crew’s Going-Out Blazer in Stretch Twill and it’s available in sizes 00-24, in classic, petite, and tall.

If you are headed somewhere warm, or it’s later in spring,  I love the pale color and relaxed fit of the Classic Relaxed Blazer in Oyster , by Reformation.

For a linen option check out Quince’s European Linen Blazer . Three gorgeous colors and it’s only $70! I bought their linen shirt and really like it. Quince makes stylish products at great price points and I own several other items from them that I am very happy with.

7. Short-sleeved Shirt

A white short-sleeved roll cuff shirt is a staple in a spring capsule wardrobe for vacation

Another workhorse of the spring capsule wardrobe, the short-sleeved button up shirt. This piece should be ultra comfy and breathable, keeping you cool through a day of sightseeing or lounging with a good book and a great view. There are lots of high-tech breathable fabrics that will whisk away any hint of perspiration, but I also love classic cotton. I bought this shirt  which is part of Banana Republic’s new Heritage line, a return to their roots as a clothing for adventurers. Adventure is always in style!

The Banana Republic Essential Roll-Cuff Shirt is sold out. Here are some similar options. Quince has a European Linen Short Sleeve Shirt which comes in seven colors. Similar to the one I am wearing, it’s a relaxed, boxy cut.

I also love this option from Everlane: The Short-Sleeve Box Shirt, in a classic neutral for any spring capsule wardrobe: white, black, slate blue, and ReChambray blue (made from recycled cotton), and this one from Madewell:  Signature Poplin Camp Shirt.

8. Long-Sleeved Button-Up

Long-sleeved black cotton shirt, a capsule wardrobe essential

I love the look of a long-sleeved shirt rolled up; I think it is so versatile for spring travel. I was imagining a trip to Europe when I planned this wardrobe and chose black. But you could go with any solid color that works with the rest of your capsule wardrobe. I also love a striped shirt for spring!

Pictured here is the Banana Republic Oversized Cotton Shirt, which I wear in my capsule. If you prefer a more tailored shirt, the Tailor Fit Easy Care comes in black, navy or white.

If you prefer linen to cotton, I own Boden’s Linen Shirt and the quality is fantastic. I’m linking to a pretty navy; it also comes in white. And this Quince Linen Shirt, as I mentioned. Boden is slightly softer but I like them both.

Finally if you also love stripes, I’ve just ordered this Cotton-Button-Up in the Ecru/Camel from Sézane. It comes in many fun colors for spring.  I will update this with my thoughts once I’ve tried it.

9. Tee Shirts + Tank

Three t-shirts in a stacked pile: white, black and striped, are staples of a spring capsule wardrobe

You can decide how many t-shirts you need, perhaps depending on whether you have access to laundry and how warm it will be. I chose 3 tees for my spring capsule, a white, a black and a striped, as well as a pink tank which you will see in the outfits below.

Most of us have t-shirts in out wardrobe. If you need a new one, my striped tee is by Boden. I also have t-shirts by Vince, Madewell, Banana Republic and so on. I am linking a few options below.

My pink tank is by Athleta. I am linking a similar one below.

Reformation makes a soft and well-priced classic: Perfect Vintage T, which is a relaxed fit, and I have the Vintage Classic Crew Neck by J. Crew in three colors. It’s nice quality, and the fit is just relaxed enough.

For stripes, Boden has a fabulous Short-Sleeved Breton T.

10. Spring Dress

A pink chevron patterned dress with black straps, by Loft

This is the one thing in your spring capsule wardrobe that doesn’t have to go with the color palette. A dress is a stand-alone piece; it can be any color or pattern.

You should love it and feel comfortable, and make sure it works with at least one pair of shoes and possibly your cardigan or blazer for layering. But you could also wear your trench coat if it’s chilly.

I picked this pink chevron patterned dress because I liked the colors for spring and the jersey material makes it easy to pack – it doesn’t wrinkle!

It’s from Loft in 2021, the Chevron Dress Flounce Pocket, so I am linking a few other dresses I love. Note: that if you do purchase this specific dress on resale somewhere, you will need to wear a stretchy “tube bra” over your regular bra because it clings a bit at the chest.

I love Sézane’s Alani dress . Shirt-dress styles are classic. I own several and wear them often. For something colorful, Boden’s Linen Kaftan Maxi comes in two pretty options, a solid coral and a stripe, in sizes from 2-22. I own one dress by Boden and would happily fill my closet with them. They are well-made and comfortable.

If you prefer something sleeveless, Athleta’s Santorini Midi Dress travels well. The name references the island of Santorini, and this would be fabulous for spring in Greece! (I was in Greece in mid-May last year, and it was very hot. I wore light dresses every day.

Susan Heinrich sits outdoors at a Paris cafe in fall wearing a trench coat, wide-leg jeans and blue pointed-toe flats.

11. Trench Coat

If you don’t already own a trench coat this could be the piece you invest in, especially if you are headed to Europe in spring. The classic trench is versatile and a true wardrobe staple.

The one I am wearing in most of the photos was 10+ years old, by Tori Burch, so I recently purchased the Sézane Scott Trench Coat .  (I am wearing it in Paris in the above photo.) I am thrilled with it. It’s the perfect weight, the fabric is beautiful and it’s a classic cut. And  Sézane ships free to the U.S. on orders over $200.

This timeless style will forever be available from a variety of retailers. The old-school original was made by Burberry in 1916, so I’ve included it below, as well as a couple of budget-friendly alternatives. You could go with grey or black but if your style inspiration is the same as mine, Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, then choose tan.

For a short style, consider the Comfort Stretch Trench by Quince . I own several Quince items and am very happy with the quality. And prices are great. This piece is $99 at time of writing.

A similar option and price point is the J. Crew Classic Trench : available in tan or navy, sizes 00 to 24.

And if you want to channel Audrey Hepburn and splurge on the ultimate investment piece, or just explore a trench treasure trove, you can see Burberry’s current collection here: Burberry Trench Coats .

A row of colorful belts on display at Sézane Paris. Several shoes and boots are also pictured just below.

Spring Capsule Wardrobe Shoes

If you told me you start planning any capsule wardrobe with shoes, I would tell you that you are brilliant. The right shoes solve most problems that come up when planning the essential pieces to take on your trip: The problem of space in your luggage, the problem of comfort and practicality, and in the case of Europe, cobblestones aren’t especially forgiving. And of course, the requirement that you like how it all looks when you head out the door.

Susan Heinrich sits on the patio at Les Deux Magots in Paris in fall. She is wearing sunglasses, light trousers, a striped button up shirt and sneakers.

Shoes for a Capsule Wardrobe for Europe

My basic rule of thumb is no more than three pairs of shoes on any trip and this is especially true if you are packing light, say a carry-on for Europe. The shoes will change with the seasons and destinations, but the criteria will not.

At least two pairs of shoes you can comfortably wear and walk in, all day. I say two because even the comfiest shoes can give you blisters if you walk in them long enough (I was recently reminded of this in Paris), so you need a second pair to alternate. A third pair can be more dressy, say for evenings. You’ll find more tips on comfortable shoes for Europe in Shoes for Paris Travel.

I had Europe travel in mind when I selected these for spring travel — a mule-style loafer, a sandal slide, and a pair of sneakers. All of them are comfortable, stylish and work with multiple outfits.

12. Loafers (Mule or Classic Style)

Mule style loafers, one in pink, one in tan

Are these mule-style loafers the MVP of this spring capsule wardrobe? Chic, comfy and well-priced – I think they are! They are inspired by and a nice copy of the classic, the Gucci Princetown .

Every time I slipped them on with one of my outfits, I instantly felt more put together. I did end up exchanging the pink for the tan. I think they will take me right on through fall in Europe! (I’m planning a fall trip to France). And there are several other color options as well.  I love the white for summer.

BCBGeneration Women’s Zorie Mule Loafers  are comfy and stylish and come in five colors; I have them in beige. These Women’s Linnie Tailored Mules by Sam Edelman are very similar, slightly more expensive.

Tory Burch makes a chic style, the Jessa Mule, which comes in black and cream.

13. Sandal Slides

A flat slide-style sandal in a chestnut color, resembles the classic sandal by Hermes

A flat slide-style sandal in a chestnut color truly goes with everything you’ll wear this spring. Dress it up, keep it casual. I love these, no accident considering they resemble the classic Oran sandal by Hermes.

Mine are from Target. I never buy shoes from Target because I don’t buy a lot of shoes. So when I do, I typically invest in shoes made to last. But rules are made to be broken and when I saw these I grabbed them. I have been pleasantly surprised, they are so comfy and have held up well with considerable wear. Mine aren’t available this season but you can get an even nicer pair – the Alibi by French Sole.

Or if you are in a position to splurge on Hermes, well, I won’t tell you not to. They are also linked, because when do I ever link to anything from Hermes?!

Alibi Sandal by French Sole, available at Tuckernuck in classic Cognac (pictured above), and white. Or if you want the designer version, consider the Hermes Oran Sandal (sigh).

Everlane’s Day Crossover Sandal has a similar feel and comes in a lovely cream and taupe.

14. Sneakers

White canvas Esplar sneakers with a blue accent, by Veja

Any sneakers will do for a spring capsule wardrobe, and don’t worry about being under-dressed. Even in Paris women wear comfy running shoes to elegantly speed along the cobblestones.

Since it was spring and I was ready for a new pair, I chose the Esplar Canvas Sneakers by Veja.

My sneakers are by the French brand Veja; the style are the Esplars in canvas. It may be unavailable but you can explore all their cute styles here: Veja Store. Mine are canvas, but I find leather are easier to keep clean.

I also love this style by Cariuma in white or peachy-beige. This brand from Brazil is both comfy and eco-friendly with lots of fun styles for women and men

And for an affordable pick, you can’t beat Classic Keds.

Spring Capsule Wardrobe Accessories

15. scarves, belt, statement necklace.

Accessories for a spring capsule wardrobe: a green scarf, a blue scarf, a sparkly silver necklace, and black belt

With the right accessories, your capsule will feel much more varied. I always travel with scarves, and included two of my favorites here.  Mix in one fabulous belt by Sézane , and garnish with a pretty  necklace which makes it easy to dress up for evening. My necklace is a souvenir from a trip to India. Anything fun will do!

The Artemis Belt by Sézane comes in many wonderful colors and the lack of holes makes it really versatile — it can be worn higher or lower. Try belting it overtop of a button-down shirt as I did for an evening outfit.

Capsule Wardrobe for Spring in Europe

Evening outfits.

Our spring travel capsule has to work for evening as well. I am showing you three outfit options here but I think we can stretch it to six evenings for a week away.

I would wear the dress twice –  with or without the blazer. And I could also pair the skirt with the black long-sleeved shirt and necklace. If I had space (and I did when I packed it all in a carry-on) I would tuck in an additional lightweight blouse that I would wear in the evening with the trousers.

Tote Bag for a Spring Capsule Wardrobe

My tote bag is the Class Structured Leather Tote by Cuyana. It’s a traditional tote style with an open top. I do travel with it, and use it at home to carry my books to French class, to meetings, or to work at a coffee shop. Cuyana also has totes with a closed top, the Easy Zipper Tote.

Cuyana totes are pricey. For something similar for less, I like Quince’s Classic Leather Italian Tote. It’s available in four lovely colors, including classic black and cognac.

Susan Heinrich carries a tan tote bag by Cuyana, with two additional photos of the outside and inside of the bag

Sustainable Clothing Brands for Capsule Wardrobes

Many of the brands listed here make sustainable production a priority. Athleta, Boden, Sézane, Reformation, Amour Vert and Veja are all certified B Corps. To earn B certification a business must meet high standards of performance, accountability, and transparency on factors from employee benefits to sustainability and  supply chain practices.

Everlane, a great source for well-priced basics, gets high marks for sustainability in many areas, but isn’t B Corp Certified. You will find the name of the factory a piece was made in, in each product listing when you click on “More detail”.

The bigger brands mentioned here, such as J. Crew and Banana Republic are making strides toward sustainability, but have a long way to go. Some of their products use sustainable materials. I own many J.Crew and Banana items which I’ve purchased over the years. A nd I am making an effort to purchase from small sustainable retailers, going forward. That’s why I’ve included them here; I hope you’ve discovered some new brands. And  you have a favorite sustainable clothing brand, please share in the comments below.

The ultimate travel capsule wardrobe.

Being a skilled packer is not an easy feat. There is a formula that goes into creating the perfect Travel Capsule Wardrobe and I’m here to teach you my ways! With a little bit of strategy and a few classic versatile pieces, you will be packing light in no time. Along with that, while this collection can take you anywhere in the world, it’s designed for a European destination. Finally, read on for tips on How to Dress European so you don’t stand out as a tourist!

Classic Clothing Items to Invest in

travel wardrobe spring

When curating your travel wardrobe you want to start off with good solid pieces that will interchange with many outfits. These are the pieces to invest in because they will last for your trips in years to come! Also, always remember the cardinal rule when packing: stick to a similar color palette. It makes life easier when you’re on the road. Consider this your packing list for classic items:

Trench Coat

A classic trench coat is the clothing equivalent to a good black purse. It’s a wardrobe staple that will never go out of style. Being that it’s lightweight, I travel with mine the majority of the time. When shopping for your trench stick to a classic style.

White Button Down

The perfect all-season staple is a white button-down . Whether you’re wearing it with jeans, a leather skirt, or simply leggings you can never go wrong with this minimalist piece. I love wearing mine through the airport with leggings or with jean shorts in the summer. Being that they will never go out of style, this is a great piece to invest in.

A classic blazer will dress up any look with its sharp silhouette! It’s no longer a staple for the office we are taking the blazer everywhere with us. You can never go wrong styling a blazer with jeans and sneakers for a casual look. Or take it out to a fancy dinner paired over a midi dress and heels. Finally, throw it on with leggings and a tee at the airport for a polished look.

Wide Leg Trousers

Wide-leg trousers have taken the fashion industry by storm in the past few years. They have become a new classic staple and I am here for it! Not only are they comfortable but they’re uber stylish as well. You can’t go wrong with that combo and the trousers I linked come in multiple colors.

Midi Dress (Spring/Summer)

A midi dress is a perfect balance between casual and polished. For summer travel, you can easily wear it with sneakers for a day of sightseeing or paid with heels and a clutch for a night out. It’s also a very flattering silhouette to add to your closet!

Sweater Dress (Fall/Winter)

The fall equivalent of a midi dress is a sweater midi dress . A cold weather staple and one of the most comfortable pieces of clothing to travel in during the colder months. Pair with sneakers for a daytime look or high-heeled boots for a fancy dinner. It rounds out your travel capsule wardrobe perfectly.

Straight Leg Jeans

I have a love-hate relationship with jeans when it comes to traveling but they are no doubt one of the most versatile pieces of clothing you can add to your wardrobe. Stick to a straight-leg style since they are very trendy at the moment. You also want a pair that fits properly or else you will be uncomfortable. These AG Golde jeans come highly recommend and the material is a bit stretchy.

Neutral Cardigan

Cardigans have been in fashion for decades. Not only that but a cardigan comes in handy during those long-haul flights and train rides. I like to pair my neutral cardi with straight-leg jeans, a tank top, and sneakers for a travel day polished look.

Trendy Pieces

Trendy pieces are a great way to round out your travel capsule wardrobe. You can easily filter these pieces in and out as you see fit. Finally, when shopping for trendy clothes I tend to go out of the box in terms of colors and patterns as I will filter out these pieces within a year or so.

Statement Blouse

A statement blouse truly makes a statement. The best part about wearing a statement blouse is you can keep your other articles of clothing simple. Let the blouse have its own moment!

Leather Trousers

Leather trousers are another hot item that has taken the fashion world by storm. I don’t see leather slowing down as a trend so pick yourself up a pair of classic pants to last years to come.

Black Split Front Pants

These split-front pants elevate any outfit but feel like leggings. Sounds like a win-win for me! Pair this with a white button-down, black booties, and throw on a trench coat and you have yourself a solid European Outfit.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe: Accessories

Retro sneakers.

The sneaker trend is not going anywhere so buckle up sister and buy yourself a nice pair of retro sneakers . These can easily be styled with a dress and denim jack. Or opt to wear them with split front pants and a white button-down.

Wearable Heels

I tend to only pack one pair of wearable heels when traveling to Europe. Mostly because of the cobblestone streets. They do not pair well with heels. However, if you choose a pair with a chunky heel you’ll be waltzing down those streets in style.

Black Heeled Booties

The versatility of Black Heeled Booties is endless! Whether you pair it with leather trousers and a statement blouse or opt for a more casual look with jeans and a white button-down you can trust these booties to last for years. I always splurge on accessories because they are mostly worn in my wardrobe.

Crossbody Bag

I love a good shoulder bag like the rest of the fashion world but when traveling I always carry a crossbody bag . For multiple reasons one being scams and pickpocketers. When wearing your crossbody in front of your person you are less likely to have someone rummaging through there when no one is looking. I love this trendy crossbody from Marc Jacobs because it’s the perfect blend of classic and trendy.

Wide Brim Fedora

An easy way to elevate any daytime look is by adding a wide brim fedora . You can pair it with a leather jacket and jeans for a daytime look or with a sweater dress and over-the-knee boots for a night out. The best part about wearing a hat while traveling is not only do you look chic but it protects your face from the sun.

Travel Tote Bag

An ideal tool that comes in handy for travelers is a tote bag . Whether you’re toting around your laptop at the airport or simply shopping in the European markets, bringing a classic tote bag on your trip will always be a good idea.

Black Sunglasses

Chic, timeless, and classic. I am describing these Le Specs Sunglasses that I own in two colors because they are that good. We love a good pair of sunglasses to hide our tired eyes while traveling. Finally, they are under $70 so it’s a steal.

How to Dress European

The key to blending in with the Europeans is creating an outfit that has 3 elements: classic, cool, and minimalism. If you can learn this formula you will be golden. Another important thing to remember is that Europeans do not wear activewear as a leisure outfit unless they are quite literally on their way to the gym. So leave the lululemon and baseball caps at home! One of the main reasons we want to blend in as locals when traveling is because you are less susceptible to being targeted for a travel scam. Here are a few packing tips to help you dress like a European:

  • Stick to classic clothing, you can also dare to be trendy with some pieces because it is Europe after all
  • Wear neutral colors
  • Bring comfortable walking shoes that look elevated
  • Leave the athleisure wear and logos at home
  • Don’t wear jeans often, they used to be a big no-no but in recent years have become more accepted in Europe. Opt for a straight leg or wide leg pair they are tres chic
  • Alternatively, if you are wearing a feminine outfit choose a menswear-inspired shoe

spring travel wardrobe: what to pack for a week

travel wardrobe spring

Last month, I got to spend a week in my hometown. Getting some extended time with my family and friends was medicine to my soul!

I also ended up being so happy with the functional little travel wardrobe I packed that I wanted to share it here with you. So today I’m sharing:

  • How I plan my travel wardrobe
  • What I packed
  • A free packing planner printable for you

Let’s jump in!

HOW I PLAN MY TRAVEL WARDROBE

Whenever it’s time to plan a travel wardrobe, I start with the basics — I check the weather and make sure I know my activities/agenda for the trip.

I find this simplifies the whole packing process tremendously by giving me a strong starting point, eliminating a lot of options right away, and clarifying what I actually need.

When I take the time to plan this way, I’m more likely to have everything I need on the trip without overpacking. Here’s what it looked like for this particular trip:

Weather : For this trip, temps ranged from 40°F to 85°F, and we had sunny days, windy days, and thunderstorms. A bit all over the place! I focused on packing things I could layer and un-layer. I packed options for cold weather (coat, sweater, jeans, sneakers, socks, etc.) and packed options for warm weather (tank tops, shorts, sandals, a poplin shirt, etc.).

Activities : My days would mostly be spent at home with my family or working in a coffee shop — so casual clothes were top priority. I also knew I’d be taking daily walks and going on a trip to the zoo — so I needed some activewear options and a hat too. And finally, I had a couple of nicer outings planned (like a happy hour with friend and a dinner out) — so I made sure to include some items that could be dressed up a bit.

Color Palette

Once I had the basics down, I moved on to creating a cohesive color palette:

Green : Since it’s spring, I’m feeling the greens — they are so bright and lively! So I let my inspiration lead, and selected green as the first color for my travel wardrobe. You can see I’ve got pops of green here and there throughout this travel wardrobe — a bright green sweater, a lime green ball cap, and a green claw clip.

Light Blue : When choosing my next color, I thought about what would pair well with green. Blue was a natural choice — I always love green and blue together, plus it’s so easy to incorporate blue through denim. You can see I’ve got touches of blue throughout — light wash denim, and a blue stripe poplin button down.

Black : When selecting my final color, I knew I wanted a neutral. I also knew I wanted something dark to contrast the bright springy hues I’d already selected. I love the way black pairs with green and blue, plus I really love wearing all-black, so black was a natural choice.

This color palette allowed for many different moods: I could wear all my greens and blues together and be very springy indeed. OR I could go all minimalist/moody/dark/chic with an all-black look. OR I could split the difference.

WHAT I PACKED

(includes affiliate links)

1 | Bright Sweater | This sweater added the happiest jolt of vibrance and spring color to my trip. I bundled up in it on the chilly days, but I also found it handy to have on the not-so-chilly days too — I could just throw it around my shoulders for a nice pop of color.

2 | Crop Hoodie | This oversized layer kept me warm. I paired it with black bike shorts and white sneakers for walks. Another day, I wore it with jeans, a tank, and white sneakers for a casual look.

3 & 4 | Tank Tops | These run a little large, I recommend sizing down one | I packed two and honestly I probably should have packed four. I wore one as a base layer almost every day, plus they are so easy to dress up. I especially loved wearing the white tank with long denim shorts and an open button down.

5 | Oversized Button Down | This poplin shirt is super lightweight, making it an ideal “third piece” for warm days. I wore this open over a tank and bike shorts. Another day, I buttoned it up and did a french tuck into jeans.

6 | Long Denim Shorts | Curve Love Fit | These shorts! I’m obsessed! The longer length is so chic and elevated. I wore them with my green sweater one day, a tank top another day — they go with everything.

7 | Bike Shorts | Similar for less | These were so nice to have for walks and lounging.

8 | Joggers | I paired these with a tank, hoodie, and sneakers and it ended up being the perfect thing to wear for the 3 hour trip.

9 | Jeans | Curve Love Fit | Don’t leave home without good, versatile jeans. On a cold day, I wore these with the green sweater, black coat, and white sneakers. They were just as great with sandals and a tank on warm days.

10 | Midi Dress | I am currently obsessed with this dress. I want to wear it every day. The cut is chic, but it’s actually a sports dress from Beyond Yoga. The material is so soft, just like their yoga pants. It’s casual, but it can be dressed up a bit. I wore it with the green sweater around my shoulders for a pop of color.

11 | Weatherproof Coat | As much as I wanted to be all, “It’s spring, I don’t WANT to pack a coat” I’m really glad I packed a coat. It was downright cold and windy a couple of days! A long black coat looks good with any outfit, whether it be dressy, everyday, or sporty.

12 | Nike Air Max 90 White Sneakers | More sizes here | I packed these because they can be that casual white sneaker that looks chic with dresses, AND they are actually great to exercise in. I wore them with just about everything.

13 | Flat Sandals | To me, nothing is as versatile as a leather flip flop. Its essence is casual, but the minimalist silhouette feels chic too. I paired these with the midi dress for a dinner out.

14 | Shoulder Bag | Similar for less | For travel, I find a no-fuss black shoulder bag that zips is best. This one is the perfect size — it’s practical for everyday wear, but it’s also got that “little black bag” vibe that can go dressy in a heartbeat.

15 & 16 | Ball Cap & Claw Clip | I found the color of the ball cap to be a little more muted than the pictures online | Never underestimate the power of accessories. It’s amazing how just a few accessories can really elevate a look and give you a lot more options when it comes to styling. I never leave home without a ball cap these days, and this one in lime green is so light and lively, I love it! Plus the green claw clip was a fun way to add a little extra detail and color to my outfits.

17 | Silver Hoops and Necklace | My go-to for adding a touch of glimmer to every outfit. I wore them every day.

18 | Socks | A fun change up from no-show socks. Plus cozy and comfortable.

FREE PRINTABLE: PACKING PLANNER

If you’re like me and you love a good printable, this one’s for you!  You can download my packing planner right here  and  here’s an example to get you started . It only has enough planning room for a week, so feel free to print out multiples if your trip is longer. Tip: I’ve found it’s best to write in pencil, so you can adjust as you go along.

Thank you so much for reading — I had a ton of fun putting this post together and I hope you enjoyed it! Hopefully it gives you some packing inspiration for your next trip.

Got any trips coming up? Or any packing tips or questions? Let me know in the comments.

Also, I’m posting a lot more outfits to Pinterest and LTK this month, so feel free to follow along there if you like.

We’re planning a two week long trip in France on a Viking ship cruise. I have no idea how to manage a two week long trip with enough clothes packed in my luggage without packing everything I own. Do you have any advice?

April 11, 2022 at 12:46 pm

Hi Phyllis! I did a post a few years ago about packing for a two or three week trip — hopefully it can help you get started!

Thank you for this, Caroline! I enjoy your packing lists and especially appreciate the helpful commentary you include on how you wore/how much you used what you packed. I LOVE making packing lists and pretty much had it down to a science before the pandemic hit. Now that I have started taking little trips again, I have found myself back at square one, staring at all the things I want to include ‘just in case’ and laughing at how muh my packing muscle has atrophied these past two years. Your post is helping me get back on my game! What fun! Thank you!

April 11, 2022 at 12:44 pm

Jen I totally feel you! And your phrasing about your packing muscle atrophying — THAT’S SO IT. LOL, that’s what I’ve been feeling too. Thanks for putting words to it! :)

April 12, 2022 at 12:27 pm

😂The struggle is real!

April 11, 2022 at 8:34 am

Love the pop a green! It’s so refreshing to see. You’re inspiring to branch out from my usual neutrals. I’ll be adding some of these items to my cart for spring/summer 🤩

April 11, 2022 at 12:40 pm

It’s fun to add in a little color! :)

April 11, 2022 at 8:42 am

I love that Midi dress! Just wondering what size you wear since there are no reviews to know whether the dress runs small / large / or true to size.

April 11, 2022 at 12:39 pm

Hi Shellie! I got an XS and I’d say it fits TTS. It’s fitted but since it’s a sports dress it’s super stretchy and comfortable.

April 11, 2022 at 8:56 am

Would love to see the outfits you created from your packing list.

April 11, 2022 at 12:23 pm

April 11, 2022 at 12:48 pm

Hi Wanda! I’ll plan to post a round up of outfits from the travel wardrobe a little later this week. :)

April 11, 2022 at 9:53 am

Thank you for sharing your travel packing planner. I use a similar one that I came up with awhile back when I traveled a lot for work. The one thing I found helpful was breaking out the outfit column to include accessories. This way I was sure to take jewelry, shoes, and/or undergarments I might need for a particular outfit.

April 11, 2022 at 12:38 pm

That is such a good idea Virginia! I might have to revise the planner to include an accessories section. Bringing the right accessories can make a travel wardrobe so much more useful and versatile. Thanks for sharing.

April 11, 2022 at 10:53 am

this is so timely, thank you! i’m headed to a wedding in Santa Rosa this weekend, with rain in the forecast and hopefully a small hike. the week after i’ll be driving to New Mexico with a friend. i’ve got my work cut out for me, but luckily i’ve been using a reliable packing planner for years, inspired by yours.

Great post, thanks!!

10 Essential Pieces for a Spring Capsule Wardrobe in Europe

Spring Capsule Wardrobe in Europe

Are you planning a springtime getaway to Europe? Wondering how to pack the perfect blend of style and practicality? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered! Here’s a list for you of the top 10 essential pieces for a stylish spring capsule wardrobe in Europe. With these items, you’ll be ready for anything from strolling down the streets of Paris to exploring the ruins of Rome. Get ready to pack light and travel in style!

Before diving into our list of the top 10 essential pieces for a stylish spring capsule wardrobe in Europe, it’s important to acknowledge that Europe is a diverse continent with varying weather conditions and cultural norms across its many countries. These suggestions should be used as a guideline or template for planning your own travel capsule, tailored to your specific destinations and personal preferences.

Keep in mind that you may need to adjust your wardrobe choices based on the climate, local customs, and activities you have planned during your trip. With that said, let’s explore the essential pieces that will help you create a versatile and fashionable wardrobe for your European adventure this spring. My FREE planner is available for immediate download to help you clarify your packing needs.

1. Lightweight Jacket

A lightweight, versatile jacket is a must-have for any spring trip to Europe. Opt for a classic trench or to keep you warm on those cooler days and nights. A trench is not only functional but also adds an extra layer of style and effortless European sensibility to your travel outfits. These are available in many price ranges, choose the right piece for your travel and stylistic needs.

travel wardrobe spring

There’s a reason why the trench coat remains a truly iconic wardrobe piece. A trench not only offers protection from unpredictable spring weather, but also adds an air of sophistication to your outfit. The trench coat’s versatile design allows you to wear it with jeans for a casual day of sightseeing or to dress it up with a chic dress for an evening out. Furthermore, the adjustable belt can be used to cinch the waist, adding shape and style to your look. With a trench coat as part of your spring capsule wardrobe, you’ll be prepared for whatever the European climate has in store while looking effortlessly elegant. Wear your light sweater layer underneath with a scarf on chilly mornings and evenings or wear with short sleeve layers on warmer days.

Another stylish choice is a leather jacket. A well-fitting leather jacket adds an edge to your outfit, instantly elevating your overall look. This versatile piece can be dressed up or down, pairing perfectly with jeans and a tee for a cool daytime ensemble or with a dress for an edgier evening outfit. Additionally, leather jackets provide warmth during those brisk spring evenings and can even protect you from unexpected drizzles. Investing in a high-quality leather jacket for your spring capsule wardrobe ensures you’ll stay both fashionable and comfortable throughout your European travels. Go for a classic moto jacket, draped style or even a leather blazer.

travel wardrobe spring

2. Stylish Scarf

Scarves are not only a great way to add a pop of color and pattern to your outfit, but they can also keep you warm during those chilly European spring mornings and evenings. Choose a lightweight scarf made from materials like cotton, linen, or silk that can be easily folded and stored in your bag.

travel wardrobe spring

I’ve become obsessed with accessorizing with scarves since my first trip to Paris and I had no idea that everyone and I mean everyone in Paris and other major European cities wears them. If you take away nothing else from this article, pack a scarf!

3. Comfortable Sneakers

Whether you’re exploring the cobblestone streets of Prague or the bustling avenues of Barcelona, a comfortable pair of sneakers is essential. Choose a stylish, versatile pair that can be dressed up or down to match your outfits. When integrating a sneaker into your capsule wardrobe, I would account for it to be worn with all or most of your travel outfits. With the amount of walking required during European travel, a sneaker should be your “go-to” shoe”.

travel wardrobe spring

In the past, sneakers would have been a NO. However, sneaker styles have been updated to be more sleek and Europe isn’t as formal as you would imagine. Sneakers are totally acceptable and be prepared to see a lot of classic Converse Hi-Tops worn throughout Europe. (PRO-TIP: If you wear converse add an insole please!). Choose from chunky to sleek. A classic white or neutral pair will provide you with the most versatility.

4. Ankle Boots or Loafers

Ankle boots are another must-have footwear option for your spring capsule wardrobe. They’re perfect for adding a touch of sophistication to your outfits while still being comfortable enough for all-day wear. I love the Blondo brand of shoes. They are comfortable, stylish and waterproof. The pair of ankle boots shown is no exception. I own several pairs of Blondo shoes and they are great travel shoes.

In addition or in place of ankle boots, consider packing a pair of comfortable on-trend loafers for your European spring adventure. Loafers offer a chic and polished footwear option, while still providing all-day comfort for walking and sightseeing. There’s lots of different styles of loafers from flat to platform, choose a style that complements your travel wardrobe. They can easily be paired with jeans, skirts, or dresses, making them an incredibly versatile footwear option for your spring capsule wardrobe. Opt for a classic design in a neutral color like black, brown, metallic or beige to ensure maximum compatibility with your other wardrobe pieces.

travel wardrobe spring

Jean styles are all over the place at the moment. The skinny jean is taking a back seat for now, to other cuts. If you love your skinnies by all means keep them around in your travel wardrobe. Keep your skinny jeans looking fresh by topping with a blazer, slightly oversize button down, or walk-able ballet flat.

If you want to update your jeans, straight leg and wider cut jeans and even flares are the way to go. No matter the cut, the key is that they fit you well and are the highest quality you can afford. My personal favorites are from Madewell and Mother Denim . Levi’s are a good option for classic fits. Opt for a dark or a medium wash that can be dressed up or down depending on your itinerary. Stay away from overly distressed styles when planing your European capsule wardrobe.

travel wardrobe spring

6. Versatile Dress

A versatile dress effortlessly transitions from casual sightseeing to evening dinners. Opt for a flattering, easy-to-wear style that can be layered with jackets or scarves for extra warmth. Ensure the dress complements all your footwear choices for maximum adaptability.

A lightweight slip dress, for example, pairs well with a tee-shirt and sneakers for a daytime look, while ankle boots, a leather jacket, and accessories elevate it for the evening. A shirt dress offers versatility through various styling options – wear it belted in front or back to accentuate your waist, or leave it open as a duster for an intriguing layer. Consider a black shirt dress with unique details, such as a unique hemline, like the one from Everlane shown below, which can be dressed up or down. Alternatively, a printed dress in a neutral palette, like this maxi from Boden , seamlessly matches your footwear and outerwear, creating a cohesive travel wardrobe. A simple wrap dress style is also a flattering and versatile travel dress options.

travel wardrobe spring

7. Button down shirt or blouse

Adding a button-down shirt or blouse to your spring capsule wardrobe offers even more versatility for your European getaway. A crisp button-down shirt in a classic white or light blue hue can be easily dressed up or down, pairing well with jeans, skirts, or layered under a sweater. On one of my first trips to Paris I saw several women wearing light blue button down shirts. Ever since then it’s become a staple in my everyday and European capsule wardrobe. For a slightly more formal option, opt for a silk or satin blouse that can elevate your look for evenings out or more sophisticated events.

Choose a neutral or pastel color for easy coordination with the rest of your wardrobe. Both button-down shirts and blouses can be worn tucked in, half-tucked, or untucked, providing a range of styling options to suit your personal taste and the occasion. Choose a sleek blouse or opt for a statement top with embellishments like ruffles and/or puff sleeves or dainty details like swiss dots or other unique details.

travel wardrobe spring

8. Lightweight Sweater

A lightweight sweater is perfect for layering during unpredictable spring weather. Choose a classic style like a crewneck or V-neck in a neutral color to complement your other wardrobe pieces. Layer over tee shirts, button down shirts or blouses. This is the layer that will keep you warm on cool spring morinings and evenings. Keep it lightweight so you don’t get too warm in it and you can easily shed this layer during your travel day. Throw your sweater over your shoulders or tie it over your shoulder and across your chest for a casual street style look.

travel wardrobe spring

9. Stylish Skirt

A stylish skirt is a great addition to your spring capsule wardrobe, offering a variety of looks when paired with different tops and shoes. Consider packing a ribbed midi skirt , which is not only comfortable but also provides a sleek silhouette that can be dressed up or down. A printed skirt in a neutral or coordinating color palette adds visual interest and can be easily matched with your tops and outerwear. For a touch of luxury, opt for a washable silk skirt, like the one shown below from Quince, that feels great against the skin and elevates your overall look. All three of these options are lightweight and won’t take up too much precious room in your suitcase. No matter which type of skirt you choose, ensure it’s a flattering and easy-to-wear style that complements your other wardrobe pieces.

travel wardrobe spring

10. Crossbody Bag

A crossbody bag is not only a stylish accessory, but it also provides a hands-free option for carrying your essentials while exploring Europe’s beautiful cities. Opt for a bag with a secure closure and adjustable strap for added functionality. For extra security and peace of mind, consider choosing an RFID-blocking bag . This feature helps protect your personal information, such as credit card data and passport details, from electronic theft, ensuring you can enjoy your European adventure worry-free.

In addition to RFID protection, here are some additional security tips for using crossbody bags in Europe:

  • Choose a bag with lockable zippers or closures to deter pickpockets.
  • Opt for a bag made of slash-resistant material to prevent thieves from cutting the bag open.
  • Look for a crossbody bag with a cut-resistant strap, which prevents thieves from easily cutting the strap and running off with your bag.
  • Always wear your crossbody bag in front of you, with the bag resting against your hip or abdomen, making it more difficult for someone to access it without your knowledge.
  • Stay vigilant in crowded areas, such as public transportation or tourist hotspots, where pickpockets are more likely to target unsuspecting travelers.

By following these security tips and selecting a crossbody bag with safety features, you can focus on enjoying your European travels with confidence.

travel wardrobe spring

With these 10 essential pieces, you’ll be well on your way to creating a stylish and versatile spring capsule wardrobe for your European adventure. Remember, the key to packing light is to choose items that can be easily mixed and matched to create a variety of outfits.

Spring in Europe Travel Wardrobe Capsule

These 10 essentials serve as the foundation for this European Spring Travel Capsule. Remember to use this as a template to plan your own travel capsule wardrobe. This capsule consists of 12 pieces designed to take you through a variety of weather conditions and travel scenarios. If you expect rain in your travels, pack a lightweight umbrella or a packable rain jacket .

  • Outerwear – For this capsule, a classic trench coat is the ultimate versatile layer.
  • Outerwear – A light leather jacket can be worn is an edgy yet classic outer layer.
  • Sweater 1 – A classic stripe sweater adds a spring-y vibe.
  • Sweater 2 – A lightweight short sleeve sweater with a collar adds to your outfit options and keeps you warm.
  • Blouse A statement or dainty blouse is a great spring long sleeve option.
  • Button Down – I love a light blue button down shirt. It’s a versatile item that can be dressed up or down and easily layers with other capsule items.
  • Graphic Tee – A graphic tee adds a little personality to an all neutral capsule wardrobe.
  • Solid color tee – A simple lightweight tee shirt can be worn layered under a jacket or under a sweater for additional warmth. If possible pack fabric blends vs. 100% cotton tee shirts which can be bulky.
  • Jeans – Pack jeans that are flattering and fit well. Avoid overly distressed washes.
  • Dark Pants – Pack a pair of dark pants. This can be another pair of jeans, trousers or even these activewear pants from Old Navy that can pass as trousers- hello comfy airplane outfit.
  • Skirt – A skirt is a great outfit option for warm travel days and can be another travel outfit for day to evening activities.
  • Dress – A dress is your one and done piece. The best travel dress works for most of your travel needs and can take you from day to evening travel activities.
  • Leather Waterproof boots – A comfortable neutral toned ankle boot will get you through your European travels.
  • Comfortable walking sneakers – The amount of walking you will do in Europe can’t be emphasized enough. Pick a chic and comfortable pair of sneakers. The ASICS Women’s Japan S PF Shoes have a platform that add an edge to them and in white they are easy to match.
  • Loafers – IF you think you need a third pair of shoes, loafers are an on-trend option.
  • Accessories – keep accessories minimal. Always pack a scarf , especially in spring, it’s the perfect added layer for warmth. A small silky scarf with a print adds a pop of color and pattern to your neutral travel outfits. Choose dainty or chunky gold jewelry that you wear with all your travel outfits.
  • Tote and Crossbody bags – I like this Fjallraven tote because it can convert to a backpack. A crossbody bag is essential.

How to Curate a Perfect Travel Wardrobe, According to a Fashion Expert

Dressed to jet.

Packing for a single-destination trip is challenging enough, but what if your itinerary sees you taking flight to Rome for meetings, before swinging over to Brazil to watch your sister tie the knot, and then hightailing it to the Bay Area for a class reunion?

Sure, you can stuff the entire contents of your closet into multiple suitcases and pay extra to haul trunks around the globe, or you can pack thoughtfully and efficiently like a pro . We spoke to Libby Page, senior market editor at Net-A-Porter and a seasoned traveler — who jet sets for months at a time — for her tips on curating a classic wardrobe that transcends destination.

"When packing, start by laying out your wardrobe foundations — shirts, t-shirts, denim, and wide-leg pants in neutral colors that will work with everything,'' says Page. Once the foundation is set, Page builds looks out depending on what occasions she's dressing for and what the temperature is looking like. Throw on a necklace and bold lip for a dinner out, or wrap on a scarf for a day of sightseeing. Another important piece of advice: "Try and wear everything twice, but in a different way to save on space," says Page.

Ahead, she tells us her must-haves to always look chic on the road. So whether you're in Tokyo one day or Copenhagen the next, here are the items to pack in order to feel and look put together.

Classic White Shirt

You can never go wrong with a white shirt, and the staple works for all seasons. "It can be layered over a tank or a turtleneck, and even worn as a cover up on the beach — it's a truly versatile piece," says Page. "We are seeing shirts styled over bikini tops, paired back with tailored pants, a look which I will definitely be trying for my next vacation."

To buy: $990, net-a-porter.com

Light Knit Sweater

Even tropical destinations can get chilly in the evenings, so it's important to stow items that can be layered "to ensure you are prepared for a drop in temperature," says Page. She loves styling a cozy sweater with chino shorts and sneakers.

To buy: $69, nordstrom.com

Chic Black Blazer

This wardrobe classic can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. "I'd style this with a white t-shirt and denim shorts for a summer city escape or with black skinny jeans and over-the-knee boots for a fashion-forward look in London," says Page.

To buy: $2,695, nordstrom.com

Perfect Denim

A good pair of jeans is a must to throw on and go, no matter where in the world you are. For warmer weather, Page loves styling her favorite pair over a swimsuit during the day and then letting the swimsuit act as a bodysuit for evenings.

To buy: $170, net-a-porter.com

Practical Bag

As much as you want to, you can't take every handbag in your closet. Invest in one that will work for multiple outfits and occasions. "Savette's Symmetry 19 shoulder bag is the perfect size for all daily essentials," says Page. "The strap is adjustable and removable so it can be worn as a crossbody, small shoulder bag, or alternatively carried by the short handle. Three bags in one!"

To buy: $1,750, net-a-porter.com

Sensible, Stylish Shoes

Sure, sneakers are our go-to, but when you want to feel a little more polished, slip on some comfy yet stylish loafers, says Page. Plus, "they are easy to pack and small enough to save space in my luggage," she says. For an alternative footwear option for dinners and drinks the style expert says to pack a pair of timeless mules.

To buy: $795, net-a-porter.com

Luxe Luggage

For Page, a good piece of luggage is as essential as the contents inside. "I love RIMOWA's signature aluminum cabin suitcase, which is a new addition to my traveling wardrobe," she says. The lightweight and roomy aluminum bag can withstand being thrown in and out of cars and baggage belts, as well as whizzing through airports while looking effortlessly chic.

To buy: $1,400, rimowa.com

How to Create the Ultimate Travel Capsule Wardrobe

What is a travel capsule wardrobe.

The basic idea is that you pack a selection of high-quality staples that are made up of neutral colors; versatile items that can be mixed and matched in different ways. When determining your collection of basic clothing to pack, important things to consider are the weather forecast, if you will have any formal occasions, and the types of activities you will be doing on your upcoming trip.

Before you read the steps, you can grab my editable packing list below!

our Ultimate Packing List for Women

Steps to Create Your Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Step 1. do a little research, weather at your destination:.

Hot weather will call for entirely different clothing items than chilly fall days or snowy days. Make sure you have an idea of what to expect when you arrive at your destination.

Know Your Season:

Similarly, different seasons mean different choices. A summer vacation to the beach or lake will clearly have a different packing list than an autumn trip to New York. Your color scheme will be different, the weight and style of your clothes will be different, your shoes will be different based on the season.

Activities:

A vacation will require different packing than a business trip, and a trip to the mountains will require different items from a trip to the beach. Know, or at least have an idea of, the type of activities you will do on your trip so you can choose appropriate clothes for your plans .

Cultural norms:

It’s important to respect cultural norms in different locations and countries. Oftentimes religious sites will require a headcover or for women, covered shoulders. Make sure to be prepared!

How Long is the trip?

For a week trip or more you will really need to make sure your outfits mix and match, and for the longer trips you will want to find a way to incorporate laundry. Even on weekend trips I pack 5-4-3-2-1, and on those trips I find I have way more than enough.

How long does it take to get there?

Especially if you have a long flight, your travel outfit matters. You want to look nice and be comfortable at the same time. And here is the trick. 5-4-3-2-1 packing is a guideline, not a hard and fast rule. For a longer trip I will add a travel day outfit that is not in the 5-4-3-2-1 capsule, but matches it. I like to wash my travel clothes when the trip is long. By adding in a travel day outfit I don’t have to do laundry right away. And, once I do get some laundry done, I have extra pieces to work in to the outfits!

Step 2: Choose a Neutral Color Palette and versatile pieces

We often choose clothes that are made up of darker neutral colors. Your wardrobe can be mixed and matched, and a little spill cannot be seen so easily. You will also want to pick quality pieces that that are versatile enough to be worn in different situations and weather as need be.

PRO TIP : For a long trip, you will need to do laundry. You will want to make sure that you will be able to find laundry facilities so you can keep your clothing fresh and clean during the trip.

Step 3: Add in Color and Accent Pieces

This will help to add a pop of color and fun into your travel capsule wardrobe. Keep in mind, you want your accent pieces to go with most of your base wardrobe so you have that many more outfit choices!

Colorful pieces, prints, metallics or a colorful silk scarf are all great statement pieces for your travel wardrobe.

Step 4: Be Ready to Layer

Depending on the temperature at your destination during your trip, you will want to pack items that can easily be layered together. Even on a cool summer night, an extra layer of a lightweight sweater can be important! Merino wool is an excellent fabric for layering. It keeps you warm without being too bulky.

PRO TIP: If you are traveling in cooler months, an outer jacket or sweater should be included as part of your travel capsule wardrobe. This is especially important if you will be visiting a place with unpredictable weather!

Step 5: Choose 3 Pairs of Shoes MAX!

This should be a mix of versatile shoes and shoes that serve specific purposes. Your 3 pairs can be all the same type of shoe, but more likely you will want to vary them for the types of activities you have planned.

Mix it up to include white sneakers for comfort, a trendy flat for day-to-day activities, and a little wedge for dressier occasions. Or walking shoes, ballet flats and flip flops. It’s up to you and your trip. In the fall I love to add in ankle boots into the mix.

PRO TIP: Since you are trying to pack light, try shoes can be worn without socks! This will help save room in your suitcase.

Step 6: Accessorize to Dress Up or Down

Jewelry is a great way to add some style to your outfits, but also consider scarves or belts that can be worn with different outfits to dress them up or down. Accessories are a traveler’s best friend! They help you look put together without having to pack many outfit choices.

PRO TIP : When wearing jewelry, think about metals that go with all of your outfits.

Step 7: Always consider bringing a swimsuit

A bathing suit is especially useful if you are planning to do some water activities during your trip. Even if you are not going to a beach, we often bring a suit in case we find an irresistible spa.

Bringing it All Together: 5-4-3-2-1 Packing

At ShePacksLite.com, we love to use the 5-4-3-2-1 packing method. This system to create your travel capsule wardrobe helps you curate a mix and match wardrobe for your whole trip. You will pack light and be ready for all the weather and activities of your trip.

It is CRITICAL that you choose a color palette that consists primarily of neutral colors. This way works well for all the pieces, and once you do, this combination will create so many outfits you would not believe it!

With a little planning, your next trip will have a completely versatile travel capsule wardrobe that will get you to your destination and out exploring adventuring…

Tops: These will include tees, nice tops, sweaters and even light jackets that will be used in outfits. If you are going with a darker them, pieces that can layer such as a black tee, black cardigan or another dark color cardigan would be nice.

Bottoms: These will includes pants, skirts, shorts and skorts. I always like to bring a versatile maxi skirt, a pair of pants that can we dressed up and down. In the fall I love a good pair of jeans, usually dark wash.

Pairs of Shoes- comfortable and appropriate to your activities

Bags, a crossbody bag is always one of my two

Hats, a straw hat for the summer and a cozy hat for the winter. Plus, I always carry a baseball hat.

Necklaces & earrings. one for dressing up, one for dressing down

Jacket for warmth

Pair of sunglasses

Be Flexible

I am somewhat flexible with a couple of the clothing types. Dresses for example, for warmer weather I will pack 3: 1 maxi, 1 sundress or casual dress, and 1 that can be dressed up. For cold weather it is entirely dependent on where and when, but I usually bring 2 as I don’t usually need that extra dress.

Swimsuits are another example: For beach vacations I will pack 2. And, I always consider packing at least 1 swimsuit. Even in the winter… you never know when you will encounter an irresistible spa!

Scarves can vary as well. For beach and warm weather vacations I will pack 1. Cooler weather vacations I will pack 2 for variety in my outfits.

This list is intended to only cover clothes and outfits, but we do have info on toiletries in another post. Check it out here! → Your Must Have List of Carry-On Toiletries

The Necessities Beyond the Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Example Travel Capsule Wardrobe

For the purpose of having an example for this post, I will be demonstrating how I build my own Travel Capsule Wardrobe using this packing method with a recent trip my family took to visit my husband’s parents and brother’s family in Portugal.

We go every summer for 2-3 weeks and our family there always comments on how crazy it is that we are able to pack for the whole trip in a carry-on! For the purpose of this post, I am going to use that trip as an example and then provide some variations for different climates, etc.

Hello – I stumbled upon your website and it’s awesome. I do wonder if it’s possible, for us to be able to click on the example capsule wardrobe and see it expanded. It’s very difficult to see the article of clothing you are showing. Or maybe it’s my old eyes 🙁 Thank you!

Hi! Thanks so much for your note. I totally get the old eyes thing and thank you for the reminder that I need to make sure people can actually see the images. I just changed how they are on the page. I think the change will work, but I blog from a large screen desktop Mac so would love to hear if it works on your set up. I am also happy to send you a pdf the wardrobe via email if that is easier. Happy holidays! Anne

I have a question for winter clothing, layering, shoes etc. we plan to go to Barcelona in Feb. I love all of the ideas you have posted but a little lost for winter. We live in NE USA and wear sweatshirts and jeans and heavy jackets. Can you offer some suggestions?

Thankyou so much!

Oh my gosh I totally missed this-I am so sorry! First of all I hope you had a good trip. Second, for the future, I Merino wool is a centerpiece of my winter travel, and I bring lightweight silk long underwear if I think it will be cold.

Again, I am so sorry for missing your trip, but here is a post on winter travels for the future. https://shepackslite.com/winter-wardrobe-capsule

We are going to Italy for 16 days in June and love your packing list for Portugal. Would you be willing to send it in pdf possibly with shopping links?

Sorry it took me a minute to respond – actually got a concussion in Feb and it knocked me out! I can definitely send the pdf. With respect to shopping links, the trick is that some of those items are past seasons and therefore no longer available. Let me see if I can find similar items. Best, Anne

Packing For Italy: The 12-Piece Travel Wardrobe

12-piece travel wardrobe for Spring or Fall in Europe

Our trip to Italy (and Paris) will cover a little over two weeks. We’ll be in Rome, Lake Como and Venice, then finishing up in Paris for two nights. As of today, the forecasts indicate mild temperatures and pleasant conditions in Rome and Venice, and chilly, possibly wet conditions in Lake Como. The last time we were in Italy, much of Europe was experiencing an unusually hot spring, so I’m happy for the cooler temps, as I find them much easier to pack for.

When push came to shove, I opted for a “no muss, no fuss” wardrobe. I’ve selected pieces that will layer well to accommodate changing conditions. As always, I don’t include outerwear, accessories or underpinnings as part of my 12 items. And at the last minute I’ll give myself the option to add a “wild card” depending on weather and my mood.

So let’s dive right in to the details…

12-piece travel wardrobe for Italy

I really wanted to include some non-black footwear, as it just feels more seasonally appropriate. But because of the rain currently in the forecast, I’m including my black weatherproof ankle boots.

  • Low-heeled pumps , left. ( similar ) We have a few dinners on the schedule that are a step up from casual, so I decided to include these leopard ankle strap pumps. I know they’re comfortable for long periods on my feet (though I’ll probably limit their wear to evenings) and the leopard print gives simple outfits a nice lift.
  • Slip-on sneakers,  middle. ( similar )I wanted something a little fun and funky. And Not Black. I’ve road-tested these the last couple of weeks and they’ve passed with flying colors for comfort and durability.
  • Weatherproof ankle boots, right. ( similar )For wet and/or chilly weather. I also like to wear ankle boots on travel days to protect my feet. You never know when that Dude In A Hurry is going to run over your toes with his heavy suitcase.

After some dithering, I went with what I know works. Two pairs of slim leg jeans (one lighter wash, one medium), and two pairs of Eileen Fisher stretch crepe pants (one slightly cropped, the other hits just below the ankle).

  • Medium wash jeans ( similar ).
  • Lighter wash jeans ( similar ) . I decided to include a lighter pair in case the weather warms up.
  • Slim black knit pants, ankle length ( similar ).
  • Slim black knit pants ( similar ).  Both of these black pants can dress up easily if needed. They also can be hand washed in the sink if necessary, and will hang to dry overnight. They’re comfortable and breathable even if the weather warms up. Best travel pants I’ve found yet!

I decided to stick with tees and sweaters this time.

  • Black merino wool pullover ( similar ).  Mine’s Uniqlo from last year. It’s a little different from the style currently available, has a high-low hem and covers my bum.
  • Cashmere blend striped tee ( similar sweater option , similar tee option ).
  • Lightweight long grey sweater ( similar ).  Mine’s from last year, but it’s a nice sweater that’s not boxy or bulky, so can layer underneath a jacket.
  • Striped 3/4 sleeve tee ( similar ). This is a very lightweight tee, good in heat.
  • Long-sleeved black silk tunic ( similar ) .
  • Pink graphic tee ( similar , more options here or here ).  In case the weather warms up, or I hit the wall with neutrals.

I’m bringing two jackets this time rather than a cardigan. One jacket can dress up for evening, the other is lightweight and can be dressed up or down.

  • Silk kimono jacket ( similar ).
  • Short fringe edge tweed jacket ( similar )

I’m using scarves to add color and pattern. As I described in an earlier post, Color And Neutrals In A Travel Wardrobe , I’ve limited my tops to stripes and graphic prints, and scarves to florals. The pattern mix works so that any of the scarves can be worn with any of the tops.

  • Silk-cashmere blend long scarf ( similar ) .
  • Cotton-silk blend long scarf ( similar )
  • Silk square scarf (gifted).( options here )
  • Cashmere poncho ( similar style , save option here ) .

Outerwear And Bags

Spring travel wardrobe outerwear

(Don’t worry, those are just sun spots on the Gucci; it hasn’t faded.)

I opted for two water-resistant jackets, one that’s a bit heavier and warmer, and one that’s a very lightweight shell. I still haven’t found a day bag I like better for travel than my Pandora, but will also throw in a smaller crossbody bag for variety and a pop of color.

  • Utility jacket ( similar ) . This jacket is several years old from Sandro. I still love it as much as the day I bought it in London.
  • Rain jacket ( similar ).
  • Black satchel/crossbody bag.
  • Red crossbody bag. (older, new red crossbody options here )

Most of these pieces are from last year or are even older, but I tried to find items that are similar in style or fabric composition. I try to be sure that most of what I’m packing is washable.

I’m often asked about what sleepwear I pack for travel. In warmest weather I’ll pack a silk chemise, otherwise I love my Cool Nights pajamas.

Whew! I think I’m ready….

Beautiful! I’m going to Italy in the dead of summer, so it’s fun to see how your transitional wardrobe differs from my “Buckets of Sweat Tour” plan. But I glean some ideas from you, no matter what trip you’re taking! hugs, Janice

Janice, I LOL’d at your “Buckets of Sweat Tour.” 😀 That was our first visit, when daytime temps often hit three digits F.

I just planned (and posted) my wardrobe for Vancouver and followed similar steps. Somehow, I still want you to pack for me. 🙂 Maybe I should add more stripes? I can’t wait to read your recap and see your photos! Enjoy your trip!

Nice! I brought a similar wardrobe for my recent week in France. Did bring leopard shoes but didn’t wear them at all; I wished for my pointy-toed black flats (I’m not as creative a dresser as you, sadly). My green utility jacket and my black Aquatalia ankle boots were my heroes. I also bought a black leather moto jacket at The Kooples in Paris and wore that very often, and saw many of those style jackets on the street..

I will be interested to see how your sequin tennies fare; I did see TONS of white leather tennis shoes throughout Paris, and so you should be right on trend.

Bon voyage! I do hope you get some sunshine in Como. While rain was forecast almost daily, we had heat and daily sun for our week in July, capped off by a spectacular thunderstorm on our last evening.

All decorative speakers seem to be huge in Paris at the moment, along with white leather sneakers and (more my style) the basic black ankle boot.

Looks like wonderful choices and very versatile. I usually aim to appear dressy casual, but walking around in the city of Florence was the only time I’ve ever felt underdressed! Have a fabulous time!

Hi Marguerite, yes, the Italians seem to have a knack for wearing beautifully tailored clothing that doesn’t look formal or staid. I remember the men in Rome in their impeccable suits.

I’d really like to see how you get that lot into your carry on, it’s impressive! Several European short haul carriers won’t let you carry a hand bag if you have a carry on case so everything has to go into it. Although sometimes it just seems to depend who is on the desk…..

Hi Maureen, this fits into a carry-on with ease. I also carry a larger tote or duffel as my “Personal Item” and my purse goes in there for the flight. There’s often no way around checking a bag with the Easyjets of the world, so I’ll suck it up and check when I have to. And on the way home, I often check as I’ve bought skincare, oils/vinegars, etc. that can’t be carried on. But it’s sure nice to have a smaller bag for train travel and not taking up a massive amount of space in small hotel rooms!

I am impressed this fits into a carry on. Last weekend I went to London for three days/two nights. You know me Susan, I do not travel light. But British Airways wanted to charge me € 92 (return) for a suitcase. And that was the limit for me, so for the first time I got everything in a carry on. Much less than what you carry. AND I had a large tote with me as well for personal stuff and the camera. BA does allow that. I am always very impressed with your travel packing. Greetje

That’s what I am wondering! For a one month trip to Rome and northern Italy, I brought 5 long tops/short dresses and 3 prs of leggings, 2 prs of shoes, of course I am wearing one of each of these and a sweater and somehow struggled with packing it all. I ended up leaving one outfit (and the sweater because I bought a super cute raincoat!). I want to get it down to 3 tops and 2 bottoms for the future. I try for dressy comfortable and mostly black. I forgot PJs and my slippers, it was so chilly, I slept in leggings and one of my husband’s shirts….

I should print this out and tape it inside my suitcase. I am the worst packer. What outfit makes sense to me at the time of packing is always missing something when I get to my destination. Also, I could never ever pack in just a carry-on. My toiletries alone are a carry-on sized bag! I seem to pack perfectly for my young son, but badly for myself!

I can’t wait to see photos from your trip! You’re going to a few of my favourite places in Italy. xx

I would eliminate the lighter colored jeans and bring a another pair of black cropped pants instead. And, eliminate one of the boat neck, striped tees and substitute a snug fitting black v neck of some sort for a dressier look. One jacket that you can layer under. I’m sticking with leaving the spangled white shoes for places other than Italian cities.

I live in Italy (in Tuscany, near Florence) and sparkly, spangly, and/or metallic shoes are very popular here right now, on women and girls of all ages.

I will be traveling to Italy this October, whats popular at this time.

Looks very versatile. A skirt? I guess I don’t see you often in skirts. A nice knit skirt can go from dressy with pumps to being a substitute for shorts when paired with sneakers. (Since almost nobody wears shorts in Europe, a skirt is even better. And cool.) Although the weather in the south has been balmy, I haven’t worn any skirts lately. Black tights seem too wintery and my legs are too whale-white to be seen in public. I need to get some fake tan on them. Just a little, to lessen the glare.

hi francetaste, I’ve packed skirts in the past, but wore them so rarely I stopped. I don’t wear them at all at home.

I am once again in awe of how little you are able to survive with! Please tell us about your laundry plans – do you send items out, wash them yourself in a laundromat?? How can you trust someone else not to ruin your cashmere items? And jeans cannot be washed out in a hotel sink, can they? I just cannot wear tops more than once without cleaning them (or pajamas more than three times) so would need at least 14 tops for two weeks unless I had access to a washing machine so am curious on how you manage. CMM

Hi CMM, I’ll do an updated post on travel laundry soon, but the short answer is that I bring items that can be hand washed in the sink, and others that don’t need to be washed as often. I find that in cooler weather, I don’t sweat and so don’t feel the need to wash clothes as often either.

I don’t sweat much either when it’s cool. I often wear a fitted black tank under my sweaters or dresses, and that’s easy to wash. Plus I’m in an apartment with laundry facilities.

Yes! I buy silk-cotton mix tanks or undie tees and wear them under the rest. The natural fibres make for less sweatyness and the cashmere waits until I get home, as do the jeans.

Do you find that you get hot layering the tanks/tees under the other pieces? I get so hot, then cold, then hot . . .

I’m looking forward to your laundry post. I tried to pare down my big suitcase on a recent cruise and constantly had things hanging to dry in shower. How do you manage when staying someplace different every night? I made a chart of ensembles to help with mixing & matching but things still were a little crazy by the end of the cruise. Thanks for your help. My trip to Paris last Oct. was perfect. I was so confident in what I was wearing – no tacky tourist here!

Hello Susan, what will you wear on the plane? Is it from the 12 pieces or separate outfit for air travel? Thanks so much.

Hi Debbie, I’ll choose items from this 12 to wear on the plane. Probably will be the longer black pants, the black sweater and boots. My cashmere poncho can be a scarf, a blanket or worn as usual.

Thank you Susan. I leave for Italy at the end end of May. Decided carry-on only so your 12 piece wardrobe has inspired me. Anxious to see if I can pull it off. Have a delightful trip.

Great practical selection of pieces, I wish I could be more disciplined to pack lighter. I tend to wear trousers and jeans on city trips rather than skirts or dresses because I find them much more practical.

I have been reading your blog since I retired two years ago but wish I had found you much earlier. Business trips to Europe required much more “business” wear (jackets/heels) than the US but many of your tips would have been invaluable. Now hubby and I are planning our first real vacation to Europe and thanks to you I purchased the EF washable crepe pants and a silk/jersey tunic (“midnight”/navy, not black!) and have a pretty good idea of which scarves and jewelry to pack so that I can dress up or down. Always look forward to reading you with my first cup of coffee in the morning.

Kathryn51, I love to know that I am not the only one who starts her day with a cup of coffee and a little ‘une femme’!

I like this- and your itinerary!- and will venture that you can get along fine with one outerwear piece: one of the two you have shown- because we are rarely required to stay outdoors in a sideways-blowning deluge. If you have a utility jacket, all you need is an umbrella, which you still need with a rain jacket. Have a splendid time!

Susan, I admire your small packing theory but I wouldn’t be able to do it. I pay extra (for 2 cases 1 cabin). I need choices depending on my mood that day. I find I only ever wear black if I am low or depressed or at a funeral. If I am not depressed and then decide to wear black I always have a terrible time. So always colours for me.

I love black and don’t find it depressing at all. It makes me think of my succession of black cats, with their beautiful green eyes. Livia has a red collar of course. But black can be too hot in summer heat, especially in the Mediterranean.

Many Italian garments have beautiful colours that aren’t too loud and garish, too dull, or too pastel. But that is the fruit of a long heritage.

Your trip sounds just delightful! I aspire to Carry-On travel and have been looking to buy a new bag. Do you carry a ‘domestic’ carry-on or an ‘international’ carry-on?

Just got back from three weeks – Paris-Bruges-Amsterdam and my packing list looked very similar to yours! Weather ranged from a high of 76 to a high of 47! MVP’s of my trip (most valuable pieces) were my black, waterproof jacket, black boots and my packable primaloft jacket from Lands End! Can’t wait to see what your “wild card” item is!!!

One travel packing tip I use (I think I picked up from Mighty Girl http://mightygirl.com/ ) is that my loungewear (I sleep naked) should be multi-purpose -I think her example was leggings she ended up going horseback riding in once. For me, it might be a coverup I could wear to the pool/beach, or exercise tights, or…..

Four pairs of pants but not one dress or skirt?

Hi Susan, nope. I don’t wear them at home, and I’ve found that when I pack them for travel they go unworn as well. 🙂

It must be the name, as I rarely take skirts on holiday these days!

I always take a couple of skirts – and a dark jeans or similar trousers. The skirts also to wear on the plane. When it was possible to get a couple of free seats, a midi skirt to stretch out in – planes are so horribly uncomfortable. I don’t wear shorts except to do yard or heavy housework in hot weather, and jeans are hot in hot weather…

Nice! I’ll be watching for your report on two things: 1) How the Sam leopard/cheetah shoes fare. I have the same ones with the black heel and they are crazy uncomfortable. Your linked choices are slightly different, so maybe they are better. And, 2) jeans? Do you see women wearing jeans often in Europe? (I am headed to Belgium/Netherlands for two weeks in May and will be noticing.) And do you have jeans that can be washed in the sink and dried overnight? Thanks, Cindy

Jeans seen constantly in Paris. Things like jeans, plain or striped tops, scarves (always scarves), puffer jackets, moto jackets, leather sneakers. But I think that you can wear most things really. No denim mini skirts noticed, but at 47 that was never going to be on my list. Oh, and embroidery is here, on tees, jackets etc.

Plenty of jeans in the Netherlands and Belgium as well. The one thing I’d avoid is overly bleached or distressed jeans. I take dark jeans, but also skirts, as I frequently wear skirts, and find it much easier to wash out tights or leggings than jeans (I can’t wear jeans more than two or three times without washing them…).

Remember that the Dutch are among the tallest people in the world, so if you have long legs it is a good place to shop for trousers. (Not my case; I feel very height-challenged there).

Thank you. I guess I have morphed mostly away from jeans here at home, too, now that I think about it. And they do seem heavier and bulkier to back than other choices. But look great in most outfits.

Cynthia Allen. Are you the same.???

Your packing ideas keep getting better and better! Hope you have a wonderful trip. We’re headed to Croatia, France and London in September.

Just a comment from a fair skinned reader- No hat?? I have a pretty sturdy woven straw-(ish) hat from Eric Javits that I love to bring to sunny destinations- helps the heat and helps the sunburn. I think I toured Pompeii on a 90+ degree day and needed to carry my own shade with me. I know a lot of ladies think twice before wearing a ball cap, but a packable straw hat is a great thing to have.

I’d take your navy puffer if you are leaving for Paris soon. It was 20 and hot in the sun in Annecy over the weekend…. Now it’s cold and about 12 in Paris today. I followed your lead and bought a puffer jacket to bring and it has been invaluable. Nights also quite chilly. But I am from Australia!

SAFE TRAVELS………………SAY CIAO to ITALIA from ME!

Another great packing post. I am curious about the EF knit pants, do you need to wear a tunic/hip length top with them? Can they work with a regular tee/sweater? I have a week in Ireland this August and I keep asking myself what would Susan pack!

Hi Mary, it really depends on your comfort level. They’re thicker and looser-fitting than leggings so don’t need a longer top to look appropriate. I always like to have a top that covers at least to the top of my hips regardless of what pants I’m wearing.

Thank you for the information. Think I’ll head to Nordstrom and try some on. Have a wonderful trip, looking forward to seeing your items in action.

I’m planning to go to Milan and Venice this September. As I’ve never been to Venice before, I’m hoping for lots of recommendations of places to stay, sights to see and great places for dining out! Enjoy your trip!

I was in Tuscany April 14th through 21st. Your list was perfect for the weather we encountered. I took two sweaters and a water resistant jacket. I wore several layers each day, except for a warm Easter Sunday in Cinque Terre. Glad I didn’t pack sandals. I did notice that lightweight puffer jackets were very popular for both men and women.

We flew EasyJet from London to Pisa. My daughter and husband got on the plane with wheeled bags, backpacks, and a third bag each. I got stopped with two bags and had to pay 40 Euros to check my suitcase. It definitely depends on who is at the desk and whether the flight is on time. We stayed in AirBnBs and small hotels. I brought a travel clothes line and planned to hand wash a few items and use either a hairdryer or an iron to complete the drying process if necessary, but there were none to be found. I may pack one of the other for the next trip. Also, Downey Wrinkle spray.

Thanks for your organizing and especially style advice. Can’t wait for an update on your trip.

Thanks for another great packing guide. I started following you when I semi retired two years ago and your travel tips updated my wardrobe and lightened my packing all at the same time. I love the stripes/florals/denim basics. As always you are so modern, youthful, classic & chic at the same time.

Have a wonderful, wonderful time!

This is such a timely post for me! In 2 weeks, we are headed for a 10 day trip to Copenhagen and Paris. I’m always a over packer and this gives me a better idea of what to pack. I’ll be definitely taking black pants and striped tops and a few scarves. Merci!

Thank for another great packing wardrobe. I like so many of your updates! What about adding a summer button shirt or popover for those sunny days? I wore a light cardigan or shirt almost every day while traveling in Italy in May. I wore cashmere and light wool cardigans at night. Your jacket choices will be so lovely for dinners. I agree with adding a hat. You are smart to take two coats, one heavier and one very light weight, as you are showing. Have a wonderful trip! You deserve it!

This will be unpopular, but I don’t see the sophistication here in your travel wardrobe that I see in the clothes you feature in your daily life. I am going to Paris for a month soon, and I want to look more cosmopolitan, while still being comfortable. Washable silk shirts and structured jackets come to mind. Why so many t- shirts? I am afraid you have assembled a very tourist look.

Hi Gloria, what I’ve found over time and many trips is that more tailored, structured clothing is more difficult to pack in a small suitcase and often requires pressing. I’ve included a silk top that dresses up quite nicely, as do both of the jackets. Our vacations often involve traveling between 2-4 cities on trains (and occasionally busses) and having a small, light bag that I can carry up and down stairs and stow easily is a boon. Were I to be staying in one city for a longer period, I’d probably include more pieces with more variety.

Great choices, Susan. I find I always wear more casual outfits than smattering holiday and usually take home the latter unworn. Maybe your wildcard could be a loose shirt for warmer days, just in case Rome gets hot.

I love your blog. I am a new follower. I will say that I am disappointed in your travel wardrobe. You are a style blogger. Jeans and tshirts and sweaters?!? Not impressed this time. The athletic wear shoes are like you are trying too hard to be “cool”. What happened to your new found Inspiration to up the style wow?

Hi Marta, thanks! I actually adore these shoes and they don’t feel like “trying too hard.” 🙂 Over the years, I’ve been working out the balance between items that are versatile, washable, pack well and easy to style, and pieces with a bit more oomph. I’m always on the lookout for those “oomph” pieces that will also travel well. But my primary goal is to keep the wardrobe small enough to fit into a carry-on, yet versatile enough to dress up or down and accommodate a range of temperatures and conditions, and be comfortable. My inspiration to up the style wow is still there, but as they say, “you fight with the army you have,” and of the clothing I currently own, these are the pieces that prior experience has taught me will work well for travel.

In that case, I suggest you refer to The Vivienne Files. She puts together fantastic travel wardrobes for small suitcases and carry on bags. She never seems to fail. I actually found your blog from studying hers. At the least, I would have expected more EF pieces. This would certainly fulfill your packing/ wrinkle free/ laundry requirements? Somehow, the travel wardrobe you have put together with the t-shirts and utility jackets and the sparkle tennies look like what many women might wear to the grocery store or pick up garden supplies, etc. I’m just surprised how different the clothes are from what you model for everyday life.

Une réponse parfaite.

Une reponse parfaite, goes here.

I just came back after a month in Italy. I hope your white shoes don’t get too dirty! The cobblestones would be too rough on heels, but Bon Viaggio. Just one puzzlement…the pink tshirt. NO! You will not be taken seriously. I am of a certain age and live in Europe.

The pink tee is the worst. I was in Rome in September and for the life of me I don’t know where these wardrobe ideas came from here. By the way I don’t wear black much so I get tired of that line of reason too. Actually my hair is my issue thin and fly away but awful worn short. Any thoughts or suggestions? I also don’t understand why a style blogger is worried so much about what everyone else is wearing. Sincere thoughts on style and travel issues.

I’m still grappling with what and how to pack for Europe in mid-July wi a long Mediterranean cruise. I’m thinking a medium sized bag I can check and not trying to stuff so much into a carry on for three weeks. Will probably base my choices on navy and white, with a few bright linen tops. I love my EF clothing but I think wearing a topper will be too much in July in Venice and Rome. I do like the rain jacket younposted, but I will probably just bring my tried and true Northface rain jacket that I can wear over a sweater if it’s too cool on board the ship in the evenings.

I’m going to bring woolite packs and a portable clothesline and a microfiber towel to suck water out for hand washing and we may have to have laundry done on board the ship.

Thanks for the tips!

Linda, why not bring a beautiful shawl to drape around your shoulders oh, and don’t forget some large, dramatic earrings to complete your evening look

Honestly! A wonderful cruise…and you are planning to throw on the old tried and true North Face jacket every night…..don’t people want to feel special…..as well as comfortable…. having such a grand experience?

Susan, Do you have any posts as to how you specifically pack your clothes into the packing cubes ? Roll, or fold, or pack multiple items together ? I think you are casually chic, which is a form of elegance in my book !

Hi Sherry, I don’t really have a single system. I tend to roll tee shirts and fold sweaters, scarves and knit pants to fit the cube shape and size.

I’m working on a capsule wardrobe for the month of August in the UK. We will be traveling to three places by train and I don’t want bulky luggage. You offer so much great inspiration. Question: somewhere I saw you posted a place where you buy your pajamas. I want to go back to that site. Can you please post again?

I have followed your blog for a few years and have enjoyed many of your shopping finds. I just finished a cruise of the Adriatic coast, where my suitcase was dropped into the Aegean Sea while we were boarding the ship. Lessons learned: 1- everything that was sealed in a Ziploc bag or was under a drycleaning bag was perfectly dry. Everything else was soaked,. 2- Because I went “carry-on”, I had neglected to put the emergency socks, underwear and shirt in my backpack, as I would have if I had checked my suitcase. The casualties are my curling iron and my ballet flats. The ship’s staff did my laundry and were quite helpful.

I had saved this post and now that I am packing for a trip to London and Scotland, I realize how brilliant it is. Thanks!

Breaking news, tommy hilfiger’s fashion show aboard the staten island ferry had wu-tang clan performance — idris damson, brooke shields.

Tommy Hilfiger literally rocked the boat.

The designer staged a runway extravaganza aboard the decommissioned Staten Island Ferry that SNL’s Colin Jost and alum Pete Davidson allegedly bought while “very stoned,” and closed out the show with a surprise performance by three members of the Wu-Tang Clan backed by Questlove on the decks.

Dressed in shipshape Hilfiger togs, Ghostface Killah, Method Man, and Raekwon of the original Staten Island hip-hop collective jumped out of their seats and launched into anthems including “C.R.E.A.M.” and “Ice Cream.”

The passengers went wild. When they weren’t filming the rap trio, celebrity guests like Damson Idris, Brooke Shields, Jisoo, Damson Idris, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Jisoo, Olympic gold medalists Suni Lee and Gabrielle Thomas, Stray Kids’ Felix and Lee Know and Jost were grooving to the hits.

Later, the starry crowd quaffed champagne and beer, snacked on pretzels, popcorn and ice cream, and mingled with Hilfiger and his wife, Dee. The all-American designer has been holding his shows in NYC landmarks, like the Oyster Bar in Grand Central Station.

Jost, who teamed up with his former co-star and two investors to purchase the MV John F. Kennedy for $280,000 in 2022, told Alexa that he’s confident it will become a special venue. Plans have reportedly ranged from a comedy club and restaurant to a boutique cruise ship sailing between New York and Miami.

“I never thought it was a money pit, except that it, you know, costs money,” the Staten Island native told Alexa. “I always had faith that it will be something really fun. I thought tonight was really fun!”

He admitted that docking it is dear. “Yes, we do have to pay to park it! More than a car! It holds 40 cars and 5,000 people, so probably that’s the equivalent markup.” The vessel was tugged from Staten Island to Manhattan’s Pier 17 for the event.

Earlier in the evening, Idris, who is starring in the upcoming “F1” movie with Brad Pitt and Lewis Hamilton, said he loves being on the water. “I don’t know how to sail, but I know how to sit on a boat and look cool and have a cocktail.”

Aaron Gordon of the Denver Nuggets said learning to sail is on his bucket list. “I feel bad for people who need dramamine,” declared the power forward.

Turns out that one of the models may have needed the medication.

“My fiancee is walking in the show, and she gets seasick, so I’m excited to see how it goes for her,“ said Schwarzenegger, who’s an old salt.

“I grew up sailing all the time in Cape Code with my family,” said the actor. “I wouldn’t put me in charge of running the helm on the sail, but I enjoy it.”

Hilfiger’s spring fashions were buoyantly preppy.

Models navigated the aisles in trench coats, relaxed pleated chinos, capri pants, cropped sweaters and shirt dresses in nautical navy, jaunty red and crisp white.

All in all, it was smooth sailing.

DON RIVER, COSSACKS AND ROSTOV-ON-DON

Don is the second most important river in Russia after the Volga. It begins near Moscow and flows south, entering the Sea of Azov, a branch of the Black Sea near Rostov-on-Don. Between the Don and the Volga is large area of fertile steppe, much of which has been converted to farm land. The Don is dammed up into reservoirs like the Volga, below the dams at Volgodonsk, the river takes on a wild natural character again: kingfishers, herons, and egrets, sea eagles and cormorants appear as one approaches the Black Sea.

The Don is the fifth-longest river in Europe and played an important role for traders from the Byzantine Empire, helping to link Scandinavia and the Vikings with the Middle East. The Don basin is between the Dnieper basin to the west, the Volga basin to the east. The native of the Don region were Slavic nomads. the river was viewed as the border between Europe and Asia by some ancient Greek geographers.

The Don rises in the town of Novomoskovsk about 200 kilometers south-southeast of Moscow and flows for a distance of about 1,870 kilometers to the Sea of Azov. From its source, the river first flows southeast to Voronezh, then southwest to its mouth. The main city on the river is Rostov on Don.

Known as “Father Don” to the Don Cossacks, who had their homeland on the river, the Don bisects an area of rolling hills. It is often frozen until late spring. In the spring fields sometimes flood. In the winter the area around the river is very cold, with the first snowfall often in November. In the summer it can be very hot and dry, with a brown haze of dust hanging over the landscape. To the east is most steppe. The land is more fertile to the west.

Volga-Don Canal

Volga-Don Canal (32 kilometers south of Volgograd) was constructed and opened in only three and half years. It connects the Volga River — and with it the Caspian Sea — to the Don River — and with it the Sea of Azov and Black Sea Its completion in 1952 was an important milestone in the creation of Russia's inland waterway from the Black Sea to the Baltic.

The Volga flows from north of Moscow into the Caspian Sea while the Don empties into the Black Sea near the city of Rostov. The 64-kilometer (40-mile) canal links these two great rivers. The Soviet Union and Russia for a long time invested more in barges and canals than they did in trucks and highways which is one reason their transportation system has such a difficult time delivering fresh vegetables to the north before they spoil. Barges and ships are often held up by bottlenecks that form at the canal locks.

Navigation on the Volga-Don canal begins in late March and ends in early December. It is closed in the winter because of ice. Ships can pass through the canal from several hours to several days, depending on the amount of traffic. In 1997, a museum was opened up close to the 1st lock that covered the history and construction of the canal and exhibits documents and things from that time. In 2010, the reconstruction of the canal’s hydraulic structures, sluice gates, pumping systems, electrical equipment and machinery began. Complex reconstruction of the Volga-Don Canal with updated of navigation systems, pumping stations and upgrading of all of the gateways was scheduled for completion in 2019.

History of the Volga-Don Canal

For centuries, merchants traveled between the Black and Caspian Seas and between the Volga and Don Rivers because there was no waterway that connected. Many good were moved at a place where the Volga and the Don came close to each other. The lack of good Volga-Don waterway greatly complicated the trading business. The place where the Don and Volga approached each other was long eyed as a place for a canal. During the Azov campaigns of Peter the Great in 1695-96, the need for building a canal to bring military supplies to the region was apparent. Peter ordered the construction of a canal between the Ilovlya and Kamyshinka rivers that flow into the Don and the Volga. The ambitious project was started but fell far short of being realized.

Canal construction plans were developed in the pre-revolutionary times, but attempts to start construction were postponed. In the 1920s electrification plans and canal schemes were ready to be launched but World War II brought these plans to a halt. After the Battle of Stalingrad, Soviet engineers hydrobuilders and geologists arrived in the ruined city and mapped out a route for the future canal. In 1948 construction began.

Completing the 101-kilometer canal in three and half years was a remarkable achievement. Over 150 million square meters of earth was dredged and dug up; and over three million square meters of concrete was poured. The work involved about 8,000 machines: excavators, dump trucks, bulldozers and other equipment. Over one million people — most of them from war and prison camps and some civilians — were put to work on the project. In addition to the shipping canal, three other channels, a reservoir and 13 locks were created. Where Locks 1 and 13 were built triumphal arch dedicated to the victory in World War II, as well as praising the industrious Soviet people, were raised.

In July, 1952 the Volga-Don shipping channel named after VI Lenin was unveiled. The ship "Josef Stalin" passed through the Arc de Triomphe at the first lock and was greeted at t the entrance to the channel with a monument to the "leader of the peoples". In 1960 the monument was demolished, in its place installed a Lenin monument that was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the biggest monument for real man. Next to the 13th gateway is a monument to the "Connection of Fronts."

The construction of the Volga-Don canal completed the process of linking the Black Sea and Caspian Sea — and with them the Middle East and the Mediterranean — with the Baltic Sea and northern Europe and Russia, allowing river and sea vessels overcome obstacles that had previously blocked, or at least slowed and encumbered, Russian trade.

Don Cossacks

The Don Cossacks were the largest and most dominant of the Cossack subgroups. They originated as a band of mercenaries that lived around the Don River about 200 to 500 miles south of present-day Russia. By the second half of the 16th century they had grown large enough that they were the most powerful military and political force in the Don region.

In tsarist Russian, they enjoyed administrative and territorial autonomy. They were recognized and received an official seal under Peter the Great and established settlements in the Ukraine, along the Volga River, and in Chechnya and the eastern Caucasus. By 1914, most of the communities were in southern Russia, between the Black Sea, the Caspian Sea and the Caucasus.

Peter the Great visited Starocherkassk, the capital of the Don Cossacks, near the Black Sea. He saw a drunken Cossack wearing nothing but his rifle. Impressed by the idea of man giving up his clothes before his weapons, Peter made a naked man holding a gun the symbol of the Don Cossacks.

Under the Soviet, Don Cossack lands were incorporated into other regions. Today, many are based around the city of Stavropol. The Don Cossack uniform includes an olive tunic and blue pants with a red stripe running down the leg. Their flag features crises, sabers and a double-headed Russian eagle.

The Don Cossacks are the legendary fighters who have been at the front lines of many famous Russian battles, including skirmishes between Russia and Moldova in the 1990s. In Azov you can explore a museum that chronicles their courage in battle against the Turkish and Persian empire. Cossack settlements of the region used to be near the borders with Turkey. The former Turkish fortress Azak, which turned into a small Don town of Azov, is located 35 kilometers from Rostov.

The military post of the fortress consisted of six musketry regiments and a Cossack regiment.

The fortress of St. Anna was the main outpost of Russia in the Don-Azov region until the construction of the fortress of St. Dmitry Rostov. Sea of Azov

The Sea of Azov (southern Russian) is a sea connected to the northeastern Black Sea by the narrow four- kilometer-wide ) Strait of Kerch. Sometimes regarded as a northern extension of the Black Sea, it is bounded Ukraine to the north, the Crimean peninsula to the west and Russian to the south and east. The Don River and Kuban River and 20 or so smaller rivers flow into it. There is a constant outflow of water from the Sea of Azov to the Black Sea. [Source: Wikipedia]

The Sea of Azov is the shallowest sea in the world, with the depth varying roughly between one and 14 meters (three to 46 feet) and averaging seven meters. The sea is greatly affected by the inflow of numerous rivers, which bring sand, silt, and shells, which in turn form numerous bays, limans, and narrow spits and causes the sea to have low salinity and a high amount green algae. Abundant plankton results in greenish water and a large number of fish.

The Sea of Azov is 360 kilometers (220 miles) long and 180 kilometers (110 miles) wide and covers an area of 39,000 square kilometers (15,000 square miles). The coastline is low and smooth. There are numerous spits and sandbanks and these have a lot of vegetation and birdlife. The narrowness of the Kerch Strait limits the water exchange with the Black Sea. As a result, the salinity of the Sea of Azov is about one third of the salinity of the oceans. Tthe Don and Kuban rivers, account for more than 90 percent of water flowing into the sea, with the Don supplying about twice the water as the Kuban. The Kuban delta is located at the southeast, on the east side of the Kerch Strait. It is over 100 kilometers long and covers a vast flooded area with numerous channels. The Don flows from the north into the large Taganrog Bay.

Tanais: Greek Black Sea Colony

Tanais (at the mouth of the Don River on the Sea of Azov) is where a Greek settlement flourished from the 3rd century B.C. to the A.D. 4th century. It was the most northerly outpost of ancient Greek civilization. Later, in the 13th century, Genose merchants ran a trading post here that was used to ship Silk Road goods to Europe. It also helped introduce the plague to Europe. There are few remains from these periods. Near the villages of Nedvigorvka is a museum with Greek gods, amphorae, bronze oil lamps and other artifacts that have been unearthed in archeological digs.

Tanais Conservation Area was the first archaeological reserve museum established in Russia. It opened in 1961 on the site of the ancient settlement and necropolis of Tanais and was later expanded. In 2009, the Tanais Conservation Area was nominated to be a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Prof. I.A. Stempkovsky determined the location of the Tanais in 1823. Archaeological excavations began in 1853 under Prof. P.M Leontyev from Moscow University. In 1854 he published "Archaeological investigations on the territory of the ancient Tanais and its surroundings" Archaeological excavations were continued in 1867 by N.I. Tizengauzen, in 1870 by P.I. Hitsunov, and in 1908-1909 by N.I. Velelovskiy. Since 1955, regular archaeological investigations, including the excavations, have been carried out by Russian archaeologists with help from specialists from the German Institute of Archaeology and the Warsaw University archaeology department. Elizavetovskoe and Kiziterinskoe Ancient Settlements

Elizavetovskoe Ancient Settlement (four kilometers from the city of Rostov-on-Don) contains the remains of the ancient settlement located in the delta of the Don River, on the western outskirts of the Gorodishche village, north of the village of Elizavetinskaya. In the of the 6th-5th centuries B.C. a local version of Scythian culture developed and arose in the Elizavetinskoe ancient settlement. Archeologists have noted there is evidence of the existence of many cultures here: Scythian, Sarmatian, Meotian, Greek and, most likely, Amazons. In 1967, archaeologist found a burial of a woman warrior dating to the 5th century B.C., with an iron sword, a spearhead, bronze arrowheads, a fragment of an iron knife, glass and gold beads, and bronze bracelets. They also found a burial of the Scythian king with gold armor.

Kiziterinskoe Ancient Settlement (in Rostov-on-Don on the right bank, at the mouth of the Kiziterinka River, western part of the 5th street) is a site dated to the A.D. 1st-3rd centuries. Historians have established that Kiziterinskoye ancient settlement dates back to the Greco-Sarmatian period (1st-4th century AD), but layers of ancient culture (17th-15th century B.C.) were also found.

Kiziterinovskoe Meotian settlement appeared on the banks of the Don at the beginning of the 1st century A.D. The lifestyle of the Meotians was sedentary. They created their settlements on the high banks of rivers and surrounded them with a moat. Meotian settlement had square form. The total area of the ancient settlement is 10,000 square meters. The population did not exceed 400-500 people.
