Resident / Pro DJ

Pro/ Resident DJ’s are committed to entertaining every passenger on every ship, by hosting as MC while performing, reading the crowd appropriately, taking requests graciously, communicating with a smile, and mixing music smartly and creatively. Pro/ Resident DJ’s pride themselves on working with all other entertainment staff to ensure the optimum delivery of the cruise line’s product, in any venue onboard. Onboard venues, in addition to dance clubs, include poolside and deck areas, various lounges and bars, and a host of other venues.

Qualifications:

• Professional, hardworking and enthusiastic disc jockeys who love to entertain people and make sure they have a great time.
• Advanced mixing techniques including mixing across genres within Open Format programming.
• Advanced knowledge of a variety of popular music encompassing major genres from the 1960’s through today.
• Advanced equipment knowledge and ability to troubleshoot any issue associated with running a complete DJ system in a nightclub environment.
• Ability to operate Serato DJ at a professional level as well as knowledge of Pioneer and/or Roland controllers.
• English fluency as well as an understanding of North American culture and humor.
• The ability to create engaging musical experiences by extending beyond a performer into an entertainer.

How to Apply as a DJ on a Cruise Ship

A cruise ship DJ spins during deck parties, poolside, and in the shipboard nightclubs. They entertain guests from all over the world and from all walks of life, with music from the 50’s to today. A cruise ship DJ differs from other DJ jobs with the challenge of playing to a fixed audience of passengers. Additionally, a cruise ship DJ is usually expected to perform Cruise Staff duties while not acting as the in-house DJ.

To be considered for a DJ / Cruise Staff position, candidates should have at least two years of professional DJ experience at corporate parties, weddings, or hosting karaoke. The applicant must have a thorough knowledge of a variety of musical genres from 50’s classics to current music trends. The applicant must have full mixing capabilities, the ability to operate a variety of sound and lighting equipment, as well as the knack to orchestrate an energetic atmosphere.

In preparation for applying for a DJ job on a cruise ship, you should consider building your application package. Most recruiters are going to expect you to provide them with a recorded video of one of your live performances as well as an audio file of an “Open Format” music mix. Your video should showcase your crowd interaction, sound and microphone ability, whereas the audio file will highlight your timing, transitions, and flow of music.

Celebrity Cruises – Celebrity Cruises lists their current Job Openings on their employment website and qualified candidates are encouraged to apply online. The position of DJ falls under the category of Cruise Activities, but DJ’s are also expected to perform Activities Staff duties. Celebrity Cruises has a global network of hiring partners to assist in meeting their recruitment goals. Crystal Cruises – Crystal Cruises does not contract dedicated cruise staff members. Production team dancers serve as onboard facilitators of quizzes, cocktail parties, occasional library duty and Bingo sessions.

The Cunard DJ introduces acts to the stage each night, manages and performs on the ship’s radio station and creates play lists for themed night and parties. Additionally, DJs are also expected to perform Entertainment Officer (Cruise Staff) duties. Disney Cruise Line – Disney Cruise Line ’s Entertainment Operations, led by the Cruise Director, are comprised of more than 50 positions including DJ. This position is a part of the “Cruise Staff” team, catering to an adult and/or family audience. When not acting as the in-house DJ, this cruise job also performs Cruise Staff duties and assists the Entertainment Hosts and the Port Adventures operation. Holland America Line – Candidates desiring employment as DJ / Cruise Staff with Holland America should visit Holland America’s entertainment job pages.

Norwegian Cruise Line – To apply to Norwegian Cruise Line as DJ, visit Norwegian’s employment pages. Norwegian’s website features current shipboard positions available. Applicants may attach their resume in an email along with a cover letter to be considered for a personal or webcam interview. Additionally, Norwegian Cruise Line has recruiting agents throughout the world. Oceania Cruises – To apply for a cruise ship job as Social Hostess with Oceania Cruises , visit the employment pages of their website. What It’s Like To Work As A Cruise Ship DJ

I’ve DJed on three cruise ships for four separate stints with the job title of “celebrity guest DJ”. Of all the cruise ship jobs , it’s got to be one of the best! For me, it’s been a great experience to travel the world and meet people from so many different places. And like with wedding DJing , it’s an underrated way of really improving your DJ skills.

Cruise ship DJing has taken me to places that I don’t think I would ever have visited on my own. Places like Cozumel and Costa Maya in Mexico; Roattan, Honduras, Great Stirrup Cay and Nassau in the Bahamas; Puerto Rico, Halifax and Nova Scotia in Canada – and that’s just some of my favourites.

What’s more, as a cruise ship DJ, you get “dual status”. You experience all the perks of the entertainment, food and hospitality, just like the guests do. But you also you have access to everything behind the scenes. You get benefits like discounts on liquor, gifts, land excursions and so on. And obviously, you get to DJ for four to six hours a day, every day.

Of course, there are downsides: You have to leave your life for four weeks at a time, and you’ll almost certainly gain weight from all that lovely food. Plus if I’m being honest, it’s sometimes hard to wake up in the morning feeling excited about playing 50s, 60s, 70s theme nights, etc. And actually, there’s also the fact that there’s a lot of downtime and being alone to contend with.

But overall, it’s really a DJing experience like nothing I’ve done before – and I’ve done a lot in my full-time, 15-year DJing career! So if the idea of being a cruise ship DJ interests you, this week – in part one of this two-part guide – I’m going to reveal for you in detail what it’s like to be a cruise ship DJ.

The challenge of cruise ship DJing

DJing a cruise ship cannot fail to make you a better, more rounded DJ – with a thicker skin! If you think about it, a cruise is probably the only gig where you have to play to the same people day after day on a three to seven-day basis. At any other type of gig, whether it be a club/bar, wedding, and/or corporate event, you are “one and done”, and most likely will never see those people again. The only time most DJs have to worry about seeing the same patrons/guests is probably at weekly residencies.

Next you have to take into account that cruises attract a huge variety and diversity of guests. They can be couples (especially newly weds), but tend to be more groups of family and friends. They are literally from all around the world, and can range in age from 10 to 100. I hope you can see that doing this is no easy ask! Indeed, doing it well is a challenge not every DJ is up to.

A typical cruise ship DJ set

It’s early doors in the onboard venue you’re assigned to be playing in tonight. Picture a group of 10 guys and girls from South America sitting on one side of the dancefloor. Sitting across from them, a family of eight from Germany. Also, there’s a 12-person group of college kids from Penn State University, on Spring break.

Each group will send their one or two representatives to approach the DJ and request their song. No problem, that’s what most DJs deal with on a regular basis. So starting with the South Americans, they request Latin music (salsa, merengue, bachata, reggaeton). No worries, most Latin songs aren’t mixed by the DJ, and you play the whole song – although you must play two at the very least. That is, unless you want dirty looks and unruly guests for the rest of the night…

Next the German family – who range between all ages – are into top 40 pop music. Again, no worries there, you would figure that would cover most of the crowd in attendance too. So next you play the safe top 40 hits – Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, etc. (Not anything brand new yet, as you’re trying to fill the gaps on the dancefloor left by all of the people who abruptly left it when the Latin music ended…)

Now, after half an hour of top 40, the guests are getting well liquored up, and the requests start pouring in. The college students from Penn State want hip-hop, dubstep, electro and so on. As this is not so family friendly, your job is to start weaving this stuff in towards the end of the night. That’s because this is when most of the older guests and couples have gone to their cabins.

This is the kind of music policy that is encouraged by the Cruise Director, and the kind of DJ set you’ll have to get good at in order to keep everyone happy. And you do need to keep everyone happy: The bottom line is that the DJ has to keep the dancefloor full.

It’s a general truth that whatever you’re doing, some guests will be dancing and like the current music that you’re playing and some won’t. But as the DJ, you always have to look out for the greater good of the crowd. Learning to do this well is one thing cruise ship DJing can teach you. This is why I say you are guaranteed to become a better DJ after a four-week contract on a cruise line.

In this way, DJing on a cruise is actually a little like DJing a wedding. Especially, it’s like a wedding where the bride and grooms’ families are from different ethnic backgrounds and most likely haver never met the other side! Any wedding DJ who has dealt with this different kind of wedding will know the fall-back cliched music like YMCA, Chicken Dance, Electric Slide, etc. will not be the greatest selection for the night. No, you have to be cleverer than that.

The truth is that it is hard enough to know what to play at your local club/bar, but at least you know what kind of crowd is going to be there. On a cruise, you never know what crowd is coming that night, and you have to be prepared to switch tracks in an instant. Otherwise, guests will lose their trust in you and become hesitant about approaching the dancefloor. So it’s important to showcase your mixing skills by blending a lot of different genres of music in a short amount of time. You usually do this at the beginning of the club night.

By doing this, the crowd can see that you are catering to all kinds of groups (by the different genre selection). They’ll learn to stay patient with you, because they realise there’s going to be something for them just around the corner. And this is just day one of a typical seven-day cruise! By the third or fourth day, the guests start getting comfortable with you and have no problem standing by you all night requesting songs. This is a situation that the majority of the full-time DJs elsewhere don’t have to deal with. Even playing five nights a week, full-time, most DJs you usually spin at one bar/club one night and then spin at a different bar/club the next night. You don’t have to see the same drunk party people for seven days straight!

Why I find cruise ship DJing so rewarding

Apart from the perks discussed earlier, there’s one big DJing reason why I find cruise ship DJing so rewarding. I’ve touched on it a little in the DJ set outline above. Think about it this way: An average day on a cruise for the guests involves a couple of visits to the all-you-can-eat buffets, some lounging by the pool, a more formal dinner. Then if they’re not too tired or stuffed by the end of the night, there’s a visit to the bar/lounge/nightclub.

But apart from possibly poolside, at no point in a cruiser’s average day are they required to communicate or interact with a fellow guest. Only at the nightclub and on the dancefloor is this likely to really happen – if the DJ is doing his job right, that is.

With groups requesting music from you, and sharing the dancefloor as they enjoy that music, you’re helping to breaking down these barriers. You’re getting the guests to interact with each other. It’s really rewarding to use your DJing skills and clever programming to do this, knowing that you’ve added a lot to peoples’ holidays – whatever they’re into, and wherever they’re from.

Shipboard Disc Jockey Jobs

Do you have an affinity for music? Perhaps your friends are always telling you to make mixes or plan the music for their parties. You might even know a lot about music from other generations or have thought seriously about becoming a disc jockey for clubs and bars. Or, maybe you already are a disc jockey and you’re looking for new and challenging experiences with the opportunity for travel.

If this is the case, we don’t have to tell you that one of the most exciting and rewarding music industry jobs is that of a disc jockey. Disc jockeys or DJs play music and create sounds for social events spanning from weddings to birthdays to nightclubs. What you might not know is that a disc jockey job is also a crucial position in the activities and entertainment staff department onboard a cruise ship.

Cruise ships are all about social events. Dances, casinos, onboard bars and even poolside social events can all use a little background music. The onboard disc jockey is responsible for creating and providing music to onboard guests at social events just like those described above. They are responsible for working with onboard performers and AV teams as well as working independently to bring good music to events on the ship that cannot accommodate a live band. Cruise ship disc jockeys will take requests from guests, put together play lists and help keep the mood onboard the ship uplifted and enthusiastic. While a number of the job requirements and responsibilities for disc jockeys on a cruise ship are the same as those for a DJ in a club, there are a couple of differences that make an onboard disc jockey or music job on a cruise ship stand out.

Cruise lines like their disc jockeys to have a broad music base to span the generations of their clientele. Experience in a hospitality position will increase a disc jockey’s marketability because of the necessity to socialize gracefully with passengers.

Experience with lighting and sound is a big asset as well for those applying for a cruise ship disc jockey position. Some cruise ship disc jockeys will also work closely with the stage manager in assisting with show production and onboard entertainment. Being a disc jockey onboard a cruise ship is often times more demanding than other music industry or disc jockey jobs. It can also, however, be much more rewarding. Cruise ship disc jockeys may make anywhere from $1,700-$2,400 a month depending on experience and the duration of their contract. They also have the added bonus of attending the most fun and social events onboard the cruise ship and typically enjoy time off while the ship is at port. While most contracts are generally six months and the pay salary-based, there are sometimes exceptions.

Onboard disc jockey jobs are often competitive and difficult to obtain but they are also one of the best travel and music industry jobs available. Although it might take a number of interviews to find an open position, they are easily considered one of the best cruise staff positions onboard.

We love hearing from guests about their time in Russia and one comment often hear is how surprised people are by the Russian capital. We can’t say for certain what people expected but we do know that it’s always far removed from what they imagined! It’s been called a modern metropolis, a cosmopolitan city, an historic gem, an architectural treasure and a cultural powerhouse, among other descriptions. Majestic Moscow has always surprised our guests and left them with lasting and fond memories.

Russia’s famous Golden Ring is an archipelago of historic towns surrounding Moscow. Uglich is one of the oldest and was founded under Igor, the last Varangian prince. It once resisted the Mongol invasion and its ancient walls saw the grisly murder of young Dmitri, son of Ivan the Terrible. The impressive Church of St. Dmitri on the Blood, with its classic onion domes and blood red walls, is a fine example of classic Russian architecture. The tour ends with an enchanting choral concert.

This, the oldest city on the Volga River, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts a wealth of ancient orthodox treasures. The impressive Transfiguration of the Savior, adorned with murals depicting St. John’s apocalyptic visions can be seen in the Spassky Monastery. The Church of St. Elijah the Prophet is decorated with an awe-inspiring selection of rich frescoes. For a real taste of pre-revolutionary Russia, visitors are entertained by a costumed reception at the Governor’s House.

Close to the shores of White Lake once were the ‘tsar’s fishing grounds’. It lies in a place so serene that ancient monks chose to build no fewer than three holy sites here, including the Ferapontov Monastery. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, its chapels boast magnificent frescoes by Dionysius, one of Russia’s most renowned icon painters. The Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery was a refuge for many nobles during tumultuous times and later a fortress that successfully repelled invading armies.

The Karelia region is a vast and naturally beautiful wilderness that spreads all the way from St. Petersburg to the Arctic Circle. The glorious island village of Kizhi consists almost entirely of the traditionally styled wooden buildings of ‘Old Russia’. Among them is the famous Transfiguration Church built in 1714. Remarkably, and in testament to the craftsmen of the time, not a single nail was used in its construction! Kizhi is one of the favorite stops on the river cruise to St. Petersburg.

A typical rural hamlet brought to life by warm and welcoming villagers. Volga Dream guests are invited into local homes to enjoy classic Russian fare, tea with jam and ‘pirozhki’ (pies). Enthusiastic hosts share Russian traditions and the appeal of village life while proudly showing off their scrupulously kept homes and kitchen gardens. The tour continues with a brief bus ride to see a unique World War II memorial and then, for a real glimpse of Russian life, a visit to a local primary school.

Nizhny Novgorod

This was once a wealthy city thanks to its proximity to rich eastern trading routes. During the Soviet era, the city was closed to outsiders because of its military importance. It’s also where many political prisoners were sent to live out their days in exile. The 16th-century Kremlin ramparts offer spectacular views and the city is known for its elaborately decorated churches. For Volga Dream cruise guests, the highlight of the day is an evening folk concert performed by local children.

Sailing along the Volga river, the riverbank gradually ceases to be dominated by Orthodox churches. Instead, beautiful mosques appear as the river crosses into Tatarstan where the first stop is scenic Kazan, the region’s capital. Inside the white walls of the citadel, the famous Kul Sharif mosque and the old Cathedral of Peter and Paul stand side-by-side symbolizing the two faiths’ long and peaceful coexistence in the region. A concert of traditional Tatar music ends the Volga Dream tour in Kazan.

Passing the Zhigulevskie Mountains offers wonderful views from the sundeck before touring the city. One of the key attractions is the fascinating Space Museum, which offers a revealing glimpse of how the Soviet Union pursued its ambitious journey to the cosmos. The town is also noted for its beautiful esplanade, perfect for a relaxed stroll beside the Volga river. This in turn leads to the Samara State Art Museum. Founded in 1897, it is home to a collection of more than 16,000 works of art.

This city is best known for its close associations with cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin. The Russian hero who achieved worldwide fame as the first man in space lived and studied here. Saratov used to be home to a large German community, a heritage that can still be seen in the local architecture. The Volga Dream tour visits the Radishchev State Art Museum, the first picture gallery in Russia outside Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Originally called Tsaritsyn, the city was renamed Stalingrad from 1925 to 1961 in honor of the USSR’s leader. During World War II, the city’s residents put up a heroic defense, repelling an advancing Nazi invasion. The battle for Stalingrad has gone down in history as a pivotal moment in the bloody conflict on the eastern front. The most ferocious and deadly fighting took place on Mamayev Hill, where an imposing memorial now stands close to the excellent Battle of Stalingrad Panorama Museum.

Saint Petersburg

If Moscow surprises, then St Petersburg delights. Peter the Great founded the city to showcase Russia’s newfound enlightenment. He wanted to show the modern world a cultured and advanced society. In short, he built the city to impress and in that he succeeded splendidly! The striking buildings were designed by some of the finest architects Europe had to offer and even now, the ‘Venice of the North’ never fails to enchant with its spectacular buildings and impressive canal network. It is a city of true grandeur.

Meet the Professor

From the Mongol hordes to Soviet times, Russia’s history is, like all of Europe’s, a complex web of political intrigue, war and peace, trade and treaties, as well as heroes and villains. Academics devote whole lifetimes to studying Russia’s long past and one of them presents a series of lectures shedding light on everything from Gorbachev to Chekhov, Khrushchev to Ivan the Terrible and of course, contemporary Russia. Our Professor is on board throughout the river cruise for informal conversation.

Beginner’s Russian

The Russian language can be rather beautiful and poetic and we know that many seasoned travelers enjoy trying their hand at different languages. Our onboard teachers provide an introduction to the riches of Russian, so guests can try out a few useful words and phrases on real Russians during the exciting river tours from Moscow to St. Petersburg or from Moscow to Volgograd!

Russian tea tasting

The drink we tend to associate with Russia is vodka, but tea, in fact, is the much more universal beverage of choice throughout the country. Guests will get acquainted with the Russian tea etiquette, a fundamental component of the country's social culture, and enjoy the traditional tea ceremony while cruising from St. Petersburg to Moscow or taking a Grand Volga river tour.

Russian Dinner & Vodka Tasting

All our dining is international but for Russian Dining night, the Chef includes a selection of traditional Russian dishes: Chicken Kiev, Kulebyaka and no Russian table is complete without Borsch. To add to the ‘Taste of Russia’ optional Russian dress, or at least a touch of Russian style, is provided along with enthusiastic help from our staff!

Russian Cooking Class

A plate of pelmeni might not look like much to the untrained eye, but it forms the heart of Russian cuisine and culture. Basically, it's a type of dumpling: small portions of meat and onion wrapped in a thin sheet of unleavened dough and boiled, a little like ravioli. Guests can join a Russian cooking class onboard the MS Volga Dream to learn how to cook this delicious Russian dish.

Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov Piano Recital

Some of the greatest classical music ever written comes from Russia. It’s hard to imagine a more fitting stage for a virtuoso solo recital by our resident concert pianist than the mighty Volga or a better backdrop than the heart of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov’s own serene homeland.
