Tour Pack Wiring for Speakers

harley tour pak wiring diagram

  • Add to quote

For those of you that added a tour pack to your non-Ultra RG, what did you use for quick release wiring to the speaker pods? Did you buy a HD harness or just get some connectors from the auto parts store? I’m thinking making my own harness shouldn’t be too bad. One pair of connectors with enough pins for 2 speakers and some extra for possible tour pack lighting. (I don’t have any lighting on my tour pack now, but may add). So maybe a 10 or 12 pin connector. I’m not opposed to making my own; I can crimp and poke, and If the alternative is a $150 harness from HD it may be the way to go. But I’m interested what others have done. Pics and part numbers or links would be appreciated, too! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Molex connectors. I use them on my saddlebag big speakers. I don't know how many pins you can get with them. Ebay has a ton of them

If you buy the HD speaker pods they come with the complete harness.

But would you use that harness, intact, if you’re doing after market components? How do you connect to that harness from an after market amp’s speaker outputs? Something has to be custom made, doesn’t it? And can’t you buy the pods without the harness and save some $$$? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

It was the other end of the amp to which I was referring. The amp to speakers. That harness has to be customized somehow. That’s what I’m asking about. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I ran speaker wires back from my amp and then used a 4 pin trailer hitch plug for my speakers. Lighting is done on another harness that goes through a grommet on the side of the TP.

Check out the NAMZ website. They make harnesses to hook right up to the factory stuff. I have a 2015 RGS and added a tour pak to it at the dealer before I took delivery. NAMZ didn't make the speaker harness then so it was done at the dealer. Plugs into factory harness. I also got the harness from an Ultra for the tour pak so I could add lights, although the people at the dealership were too dumb to find it, I got the parts catalog for an Ultra and gave them the numbers. Have never regretted doing this and have all the same lights as an Ultra would have. You need all you can get with the idiots out there. No such thing as too many lights to get their attention.

I just installed the Exact system you are talking about. my system was a new RF system, so I had to cut and split the rear speaker harness because it has 8 wires and you only need 4 (since non ultras don’t have speaker harness to the rear). And then you have to find the rear speaker output wires up front on the molex plugs that aren’t being used and splice that to the amp. I just used 16ga. Weather proof connectors to make the splices. Seems to work fine.

Consider starting a new thread for your question. This one's pretty old but you're going to need to get your radio flashed to open up the rear channels on your head unit. EVen if you have the correct wiring harness to get back to the pods, your radio is only set up to feed the front two speakers.

Tour pack wiring on Road King

  • Add to quote

I just purchased a tour pack which came off of a 1998 Ultra. I installed it on my 2001 Road King, but need help with the wiring of the lights. I already have a run, brake turn module on my RK. Can I just splice into the existing wires between the module and the rear lights? The plug in the tour pack has three wires, Red with orange or yellow stripe, black and purple. Thanks in advance for any help.

harley tour pak wiring diagram

Yes you can splice. Black is ground. Use a jumper wire from the positive battery terminal to power the two other wires to determine their functions.

harley tour pak wiring diagram

Splicing is fine for solid mount. If you are doing detachable, go to the dealer and look at the diagram for the accessory LED light bar for tour packs. There is a wiring multi-plug adapter in that kit that I used on my detachable tour pack and it makes for a cleaner connection point. You can also order the matching multi-plug insulator and terminals for the wiring harness from the tour pack. --

Complete Tour Pack Wiring Harness

harley tour pak wiring diagram

  • 1997-2023 Touring models
  • Plug-n-play wiring harness with Ultra lights
  • Not needed for Bad Dad Tour Packs

This is the complete wiring harness to plug any 2014-2023 model year Tour Pack assembly onto your 1997-2023 Touring model. This harness plugs in underneath the bike's seat and runs into the Tour Pack where it plugs into the 5-pin connector for the OEM-style "wraparound taillight." This harness also has separate 2-pin connectors for attaching a side marker light. The harness also features an additional 2-pin connector for attaching a charging port.

Note: A complete plug-n-play harness is already included in all orders of Bad Dad's Tour Pack Lid with LEDs and Bad Dad's Tour Pack Assembly with LEDs. You do not need to order this or any additional wiring if you're using one of Bad Dad's LED products.

Note: Our harness functions as an OEM replacement harness (which is not available through Harley-Davidson). We do not guarantee that this harness will be compatible with anyone else's products. Please see the product images for reference.

This harness is different than the Basic Tour Pack Wiring Harness because the Complete Harness includes the complete plug-n-play connections for the OEM-style taillights. Our Basic Tour Pack Wiring Harness does not feature these additional connections.

An optional 12-volt power port is available separately. Each Tour Pack Wiring Harness features an additional 2-pin connector for plugging in this optional 12-volt power accessory, which is perfect for charging mobile electronics and other devices.

Use this custom wiring harness on any Road King, Road Glide, Street Glide, Electra Glide, or Ultra project.

All of Bad Dad's custom bagger parts are proudly made in the USA.

Did you look under the seat (about where your nuggets would be)? It would be the only plug with nothing hooked to it. That would be it. Search around for it. The space is only as big as your hand. I put a '05 tour-Pak on my '98 RK and it was plug and play. ~Pete

Thanks, going to look now. I received my bracket today and was notified the lid will be here next monday and off to paint.

Apologies in advance if I ask questions on this thread. I did some snooping around and don't think the 08 flhr was prewired for a tour pak. I did see after taking my seat off where the plug is to the harness on the rear fender. I take it that is what I have to splice into?

I looked last night BigPeet. I did not see anything that was obvious. After posting the pic above of the ECM connector its obvious I am not sure what I am looking for. I did click on the link in post 23 but was on my cell and it is not viewable on the cell. I just checked it out and the pic does not look like what is under my seat. I have a batt cover and then another plastic cover forward of that just aft of the gas tank I looked on the top of the fender and found the plug that attaches to the brake/directional harness that is fed through the fender. No other plugs that I can see or that are obvious. I read on the HD forum, not a member, that the 08 road king was not prewired for the tour pak. Let me tell you, I wish I knew for sure or found the plug. I will check again tomorrow, I still have the seat off the bike. I just don't know where else to look. If it was there I would think it would be obvious. Hoping it is there not that it would be a PITA to splice into the existing harness. SO far I am coming up with nothing. I do appreciate the help from this thread. I thought I got lucky with the plug for the ecm and then last night with the antenna, these and the wire harness to the rear fender is all I found. I will take a picture later today of what I found in the hopes that you might identify what I have or dont have. I would imagine the wires for the read fender originate somewhere. Maybe it is possible to follow them back to the source and splice in there. I am new to the electronic age of bikes. My last bike was a custom 78 FX that didn't even have directionals. However I can read a schematic, I worked on aviation electronic warfare equipment for nine years in the service. The shop manual I am sure would be a big help but coin is a little tight right now and I am scrounging to piece together the used pak and still get everyone a gift for christmas. This is my present to myself lol. After all I am the only one who knows what I need for the project. The GF would no doubt be lost if I sent her to the parts counter at HD. SHe is from columbia and has a hard enough time with the english language. Her looks make up for the loss of vocabulary lol

The big one looks like it to me. It should have 4 wires, not 3. You keep saying you don't think your bike was prewired for the Tour Pak. And to clarify, this is not the wiring for the "Tour Pak" per se. It is an accessory plug that can be used for other "accessories" as well as the Tour Pak. Radio, extra lights, etc, depending on which poles are used on the male plug. Use a test light to see if one pole is on all the time. One goes on w/ the ignition, and one goes on with the brakes. RK models may have it also hooked to the accessory switch next to the steering head (left side of nacelle, I believe). Electrical crap can get confusing. I would have been at my local HD asking questions. That's what they are there for. Take a screwdriver to the dealer, take your seat off and have the service man come out and explain it all to you. He can set you up with the male plug and draw you a quick wiring diagram. Easy Peasy. ~Pete

Thanks BigPeet. The simple fact that I joined the forum and found this thread was a huge help. You patience was a big help as well, thanks very much. I am learning a lot already. Weather looks good tomorrow, no rain and supposed to go up to 58 here on Long Island. Thats almost tee shirt weather considering the temps we have been riding in the last couple of weeks. I called the dealer this afternoon to see if they would have the time tomorrow to take a look at it and the service guy said "come on down". I plan on heading over around noon. Going to order the wire harness and a couple of other small parts to finish the pak once its done at the paint shop. This little project went too fast, I am going to pick up a cruise control set up as well tomorrow and start searching for info on that install. I am not certain if mine is plug and play or if I have to have it hooked up to a computer to turn it on. Either way I want to do the install myself. I want to know my way around the bike. I am pretty sure the nacelle has to come off to connect those wires. That should keep me busy for a few days if I take my time. Nice part is last year I found an old HS friend who is still riding. He now has his chopper stored over here in the garage and its like old times. We used to work on all our buddies cars back in the day. Again thanks for the help!!

If anyone is interested, I went to Harley today. BigPete, you 100% correct, it is an accessory connector and can be used for a multitude of things. They even sell a Y connector if you need to run a second wire harness. The gray single wire is a batt hot wire if you need to run something off that. The accessory plug has four wires on it or At least mine does. Breaks down like this, black is ground, orange is ignition hot, red is the brake light and blue is the tail light. The catalog says its good for bikes from 97-05. Why I don't know. It's actually too short for my bike. I did however plug in the tour pak wire harness with the side marker lights and it all worked as advertised. I am going to lengthen the tour pak harness in order to make it work for a couple of reasons. I plan on putting in a liner, if I don't lengthen the tour pak harness I'll have to remove the liner each time I want to plug it in. Second, that harness already has knife or paralell connectors under the vinyl harness cover. Hope this info helps someone in the future.

I wonder if its same / similar to the 08. I could try and get a shot of the set-up on my 08 Ultra if you'd like. I honestly dont know if it'd help though. EDIT: Ooops...never saw the multiple pages. Looks like its been addressed

I will give it a try bigpeet, you have not steered me wrong yet. I eventually want to put some sort of amplifier/speakers and hook up a bracket for my iPhone. I was reading and that is usually dangerous, that the charging system on some bikes may not be sufficient to cover the loads with multiple accessories. I have no clue if the amperage on a road king stator is less amperage than that on a touring bike with all the bells and whistles. Aside from the amp/speaker/iPhone set up, the tour pak lights I plan on installing a three light kit in and on the pak. I hope you don't think I'm being a pita but do you have any thoughts on this? Again, to the OP, thanks for not jumping on me for posting on your thread.
