Recycling Centers You Can Tour, In-Person or Virtually

Sophie Hirsh - Author

Published Feb. 10 2021, 4:26 p.m. ET

To most people, a recycling center is simply where their single-use plastic water bottles wind up — but to the eco nerds, zero wasters, and climate change activists among us, a recycling center is a magical place. I fall into all those categories so hard that my brother once got me a private tour of a recycling center for my birthday (and it was awesome).

If you (or the zero waster in your life) want to see where all the recycling magic happens, here are a few awesome recycling centers around the U.S. that you can visit — many of which also offer virtual tours.

PRo Kansas Recycling (Kansas)

View this post on Instagram A post shared by PRo Kansas Miller Recycling (@prokansasmillerrecycling)

PRo Kansas Recycling in Wichita, Kans. is more than just a recycling center — it’s also a nonprofit organization and education center. The facility features a classroom for school groups to come learn about recycling and the environment, a book nook where you can donate or take used books, and strictly-organized bins where locals can drop off their recyclables.

PRo Kansas Recycling is volunteer-run and all tours are donation-based, so make sure to leave a donation if you visit. PRo Kansas Recycling is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., offering volunteer-led tours upon request — just contact the center in advance. (If you couldn’t read my enthusiasm, PRo Kansas Recycling is the recycling center that I visited, and I highly recommend arranging a visit if you’re in the area.)

Sims Municipal Recycling (New York)

View this post on Instagram A post shared by ♻️ Sims Municipal Recycling ♻️ (@simsmuni)

Sims Municipal Recycling handles most of New York City’s recycling. The 11-acre Brooklyn property is the country's largest recycling facility, and it has its very own Recycling Education Center . The center features a theater, interactive exhibits, lunch space, and an outdoor patio, and offers tours for both school groups (from second grade through college) and adults.

In-person tours are currently suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic, so in the meantime, Sims Municipal Recycling is offering virtual tours .

Rumpke Waste & Recycling (Ohio)

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Rumpke Waste & Recycling (@rumpkewasterecycling)

Ohio-based Rumpke Waste & Recycling offers free tours of its recycling centers in both Cincinnati (Wednesdays) and Columbus (Tuesdays). Tours must be booked in advance, and you must be at least high school-aged to participate in the tour, due to the industrial setting.

Rumpke also offers free tours of its landfills in Colerain Township (Thursdays) and Brown County (all weekdays). For these tours, visitors remain on a bus that drives through the landfill. Rumpke’s tours are currently suspended due to the pandemic, but in the meantime, Rumpke has multiple free videos of its recycling facilities in action .

Green Living Science (Michigan)

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Green Living Science (@greenlivingscience)

The nonprofit Green Living Science offers field trips and tours, primarily geared toward students, of the Recycle Here! facility in Detroit, Mich. For a group of 25 students, the fee is $75, or $125 if your students want to explore the adjacent Lincoln Street Art Park. All students will participate in age appropriate STEAM activities to learn more about recycling, reducing their environmental impact at home, and conservation.

Tours are temporarily postponed at Recycle Here!, but you can reach out to Green Living Science to be notified when tours are back.

Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County (Florida)

Grand Prize Winner: Bianca F Bianca's entry will be featured in the 2021 SWA Calendar. Congratulations! #RecycleRight #ThisIsAWAY #ColoringContest Posted by Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County on  Sunday, November 15, 2020

The tours are offered to people 9 and older, by appointment only, Monday through Thursday. The tour features an interactive learning experience at the SWA’s LEED Platinum Education Center, a walk across a 500-foot Sky Bridge, a giant claw that picks up 9 tons of garbage at a time, a bus ride through Renewable Energy Park, two landfills, the Recovered Materials Processing Facility, and more.

In-person tours are currently suspended, but you can sign up for a virtual tour of SWA’s recycling facility .

York County Resource Recovery Center (Pennsylvania)

View this post on Instagram A post shared by @yorkcountysolidwasteauthority

The York County Resource Recovery Center (RRC) in York, Pa. offers free tours for groups up to 60 people, ages 6 and older. Tours of the RRC feature a lesson in the Education Center and a walking tour of the waste-to-energy facility, and are offered Monday through Friday.

The center appears to still be open during the pandemic, as of February 2021 — just make sure to schedule your tour two weeks in advance . The RRC also has a video tour of its recycling facility available on YouTube.

Eagle County Materials Recovery & Household Hazardous Waste Facilities (Colorado)

View this post on Instagram A post shared by WalkingMountainsScienceCenter (@walkingmtns)

The Walking Mountains Science Center’s Eagle County Materials Recovery & Household Hazardous Waste Facilities , based in Edwards, Colo., offers free tours to groups of all ages. You can reach out to the facility to be notified when in-person tours resume, but in the meantime, you can catch a free virtual tour via Zoom of the recycling center, landfill, and hazardous waste facility.

Northern California Recycling Association (California)

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Northern CA Recycling Assoc (@ncrarecycles)

The Northern California Recycling Association (NCRA) offers tours of a slew of facilities, including the Berkeley Food Network Food Distribution Hub, Livermore Compost, and Renewal Mill. Additionally, NCRA offers virtual tours of Recology San Francisco’s Transfer and Recycling Center and Recycle Central at Pier 96 , which you can watch from home at any time.

Remanufactured building

More than 75% of the building is made from recycled and remanufactured steel. The natural landscape was preserved and repurposed to make aggregate for the flood channels surrounding the building. Water efficient automatic low-flow fixtures were installed to conserve water, reducing consumption by more than 20%. High solar reflectance index roof materials were installed to minimize heat retention in the building.

Republic Services'Las Vegas operations featured on PBS

PBS featured Republic’s Las Vegas operations – Apex Landfill and the recycling center – in “Overview,” a series focused on the science behind our everyday world. The video highlights how modern landfills and recycling centers like ours work together to provide sustainable solutions for the communities we serve. As a leader in the environmental services industry, we’re leveraging technology to increase recycling at the Southern Nevada Recycling Center, which takes in 1.8 million pounds of recyclables per day.

Say no to recycling contamination

On average, recycling contamination levels are at 30% which means the separation of clean recyclables from contaminated material is more important than ever.

Technology at the new facility is state of the art, but even the most advanced scanning and sorting equipment can’t weed out all contamination.

recycling-sorting-equipment

The recycling facility uses highly advanced sorting technologies to process 350 tons of recyclable material per day, separating material in milliseconds.

Did you know - contamination fact

Once cardboard or paper comes into contact with food or liquid, it can no longer be recycled.

What you may not know is that putting your old battery-powered electronics and toys in your waste or recycling bin is not only an environmental no-no, it can be downright dangerous.

Just one bottle of ketchup with residue could contaminate an entire truckload! Keep recyclables free of liquid or food waste by ensuring that they’re empty, clean, and dry.

Recycling tips

We make it easy to recycle a wide variety of materials common in every home. Click on the recyclable for more information.

Don't be a "wish-cycler"

You can make a difference! Learn recycling basics and expert tips on your tour.

Empty. Clean. Dry. ™

Clean recyclables don’t contaminate other types of materials, so the recycle stream stays out of the landfill.

When in doubt, throw it out.

If it has food waste, it belongs in the trash. Just one dirty bottle can contaminate the contents of a whole recycling truck.

Know what to throw.

Paper & cardboard, metal cans, plastic bottles, and jugs (with lids).

Don't bag it.

Don’t bag your recyclables – place them in your recycling container loosely. Grocery bags and other flexible plastics will get caught in the machinery.

  • Renewable Energy
  • Natural Resources

The Kent County Waste-To-Energy Facility accepts municipal solid waste from the 6 core cities in Kent County (Grand Rapids, East Grand Rapids, Kentwood, Grandville, Walker and Wyoming). The facility can process up to 625 tons of municipal solid waste per day. The solid waste is converted into steam through carefully monitored incineration in specially designed furnace/boilers. The steam goes through a turbine/generator to generate electricity. A small portion of the electricity is used in-house and the rest is sold to an electricity supplier to be used in homes and businesses in Kent County. The solid waste is reduced to ash, which is landfilled at South Kent Landfill after ferrous metal is removed by magnets and recycled. About 4,500 tons of ferrous is recycled every year. As ash, the municipal solid waste is reduced 90% by volume and 75% by weight.

ADDRESS: 10300 South Kent Drive SW, Byron Center, MI 49315 AGES: 3rd grade and older

TOUR DURATION: Approximately 45 min.-1 hour (Available M-F 8:00am-5:00pm)

  • Personal Decision-making
  • Landfill Construction Basics

In 2015, 1.1 billion pounds of Kent County trash passed over the scales destined for a landfill or waste to energy conversion, the equivalent of filling the University of Michigan’s Big House stadium twice over. West Michigan is on pace to generate enough trash every year to fill the Big House 4 times over. What’s worse, a recent municipal solid waste study determined nearly 75% of what we threw away in 2015 could have been recycled or composted. Come learn about what we can do differently to manage discards instead of perpetuating the take-make-throw mentality.

Tours are up to one hour in length and provide an in-bus talking tour of the entire landfill area, including a trip up to the top to see the big machines in action (weather permitting) and all groups will weigh in at the scale house. A short discussion on our methane gas recovery system and the monofill where ash from Kent County’s Waste to Energy facility is buried is included. NOTE : A bus is required for this tour. Roads at South Kent Landfill are mostly unpaved. Contact your busing service prior to scheduling your tour as some bus companies will not drive on unpaved roads.

Recycling Center Open Hours: Self-Guided Tours

  • Individuals that are curious as to how Kent County’s recycling program works and want to know what can be recycled
  • Families and parents with young children looking for a casual experience
  • Child care providers or baby sitters looking for fun activities to engage in

Ulan-Ude, Buryatia

Ulan-Ude, Buryatia

Tours, Attractions and Things To Do in Ulan-Ude

All has mixed up in Ulan-Ude, the capital of Buryatia, and one of the most prominent historical cities of Russia. Here, as if in a clew of yarn, the strands of Asia and Europe, roots of Russian and Mongolian peoples, historical monuments and modern buildings have firmly intertwined.

Ulan-Ude is located just a hundred kilometers from the legendary Lake Baikal . Its close proximity to one of the world's major natural interests attracts travelers from all over the world to this city.

Ulan-Ude is full of contradictions, but the townsfolk got used to it long ago, while visitors can be surprised. Both Buddhist monks in orange robes made of a single-piece fabric and Orthodox priests dressed in a black cassock walk with perfect calm along the same streets. Also harmoniously, the Orthodox churches neighbor with ornate Buddhist temple in Ulan-Ude. The relation to Buddhism in Ulan-Ude is more than respectful: people go to the local Buddhist lamas to talk and get a piece of advice instinct with wisdom. On top of that, shamanic “idols”, with attached colored rags, fluttering in the wind can be met on the road passes suspiciously often. This fact is a direct evidence that Ulan-Ude does remember its shamanic roots, while residents and visitors do not miss an opportunity to make a stop at one of the shaman places to honor with their attention Burkhan, the Buryat god - they left coins, cigarettes, and other small things, occasionally left in pocket, in hopes to appease the terrible god.

There are no any problems with the accommodation: Any traveler, arrived to Ulan-Ude can easily find shelter in the city. Ulan-Ude has both large hotel complexes, and budget hostels and mini hotels.

Ulan-Ude is convenient because it is a transit point on the way to the Lake Baikal natural attractions, which are located on the so-called Buryat side of the sea-lake – on the shore most popular among tourists.

Ulan-Ude Airport is located 15 km from the city center, which can be reached by taxi or by regular shuttle bus. The Lake Baikal coast can be reached from Ulan-Ude by road, under the name of M55: the distance to be traveled is about 140 km.

Ivolginsky Datsan ulan-ude russia

The Republic of Buryatia is a federal subject of Russia located on the outskirts of East Siberia. It sits just off the Selenga River, with fabulous attractions like Lake Baikal not too far away. There are only around 404,000 inhabitants with very few foreign travelers, which makes this unexplored territory for even the most seasoned travelers. Ulan-Ude is also the last stop along the Trans Mongolian railway in Russia.

Luckily, this guide will cover everything you need to know before your trip to Ulan-Ude, Siberia. Whether you’re planning a trip with the Trans-Siberian Railway or backpacking across Far East Russia, keep reading to learn more about the city, where to stay, and what to see.

Why Ulan-Ude Should Be on Your Bucket List

Ulan-Ude, Russia, is particularly special. Here, you’ll find a mixed bag of activities, culture, and lush green, isolated rural regions. While this may not be the best place for a tropical holiday, it is certainly a wonderful addition to the curious traveler’s bucket list.

Ulan-Ude was founded in 1668, originally named Udinskoye because of the Uda River that runs straight through the middle of the city. It is home to Russians, Buryats, Tatars, and Ukrainians, among a few others.

ulan-ude russia

Ulan-Ude is known as the heart of Tibetan Buddhism in Russia but is also a safe haven for people of all religious backgrounds. The city’s ethnographic museum showcases this unique range of history, culture, and spirituality, which makes this a must-experience destination.

The lush foothills of the Ulan-Burgas and Khamar-Daban mountain ranges offer a space for cattle and traditional agriculture techniques to flourish. The nomadic herding style ensures that animals are well-fed and healthy.

This allows the city to boast delicious cuisine steeped in Mongolian and Russian influences. These influences are reflected through a combination of different flavors and techniques used when preparing the food.

Besides the alluring history and delectable food, Ulan-Ude showcases a remarkable way of life connecting Russian and Asian influences that beckon to be explored.

Best Time to Visit Ulan-Ude City

Between the snow-covered mountains in winter and the sun-kissed, gushing river in summer, Ulan-Ude is a beautiful location at any time of the year. The summer months present average temperatures of 62°F (16℃), with July being the hottest month and boasting highs of up to 77°F (25℃). January is the coldest month of the year, and the cold season stretches from November to February with lows of -1°F (-18℃).

The best time of year to visit Ulan-Ude falls during the shoulder season from May to September. Off-season traveling to Ulan-Ude means that you can avoid the busier months of May, August, and October. Luckily, you can expect temperate conditions, which make traveling all the more enticing and comfortable, as well as cheaper accommodation options.

It’s always best to keep tabs on the weather forecast before planning your trip. Although, if you’re visiting in January, you can always pack your skis.

Best Attractions in Ulan-Ude, Russia

Many travelers adore the enticing attractions in Moscow or the thrilling things to do in St. Petersburg , but that is just a taste of what Russia has on offer. Here’s a look at some of the compelling pastimes available in Ulan-Ude.

Historical City Center and The largest Lenin head in the world

The city contains over 200 sites that display its rich history and cultural heritage. If you’re walking through the city center, you’ll see miniature wooden houses that provide imagery of Russian folk tales as well as evidence of the city’s narrative.

Ulan-Ude is also home to the Square of the Soviets. Nestled on the modern side of the city, you can see the largest monument of Vladimir Lenin in the world. The bronze and granite bust of the leader is a cornerstone monument in Ulan-Ude.

Ivolginsky Datsan

At first glance, a Buddhist temple in Russia feels a bit out of place. Believe it or not, the Ivolginsky Datsan was formed in 1945 and became the spiritual center for the Soviet Union (USSR).

Ivolginsky Datsan ulan-ude russia

It later became the residence for Russian Lamas and specifically the head of the Russian Buddhist Lamas. The temple also houses Dashi-Dorzho Itigelov, a Buryat monk who died mid-meditation and upon exhumation was found not to have decayed much at all.

Itigelov is said to have chanted the prayer of death while sitting in the lotus position and died during that meditation. He was buried in the same position. Itigelov told his followers to exhume his body 30 years later, and once they did, followers found that he had not decayed as much as would be expected.

Ivolginsky Datsan ulan-ude russia

Followers at the time hid his body in an unmarked grave. It wasn’t until 2002 that he was exhumed once more and housed in the Ivolginsky Datsan. The well-preserved body was never mummified or embalmed and is still a mystery to pathologists and scientists alike.

Open-Air Ethnographic Museum

This outdoor museum can be found just a few miles north of Ulan-Ude in the village of Upper Berezovka. There are 40 architectural monuments and over 11,000 exhibits.

It is considered the largest open-air museum in Russia and explores everything from the Buryat people to the Baikal and Evenki heritage.

Book a skip-the-line ticket for a private tour of this impressive establishment.

Buryat Village

The Buryats are believed to be indigenous to Mongolia. Historical records also suggest that Genghis Khan was the first to subjugate the Buryat people. Hundreds of years later, they were then absorbed into the Russian empire.

ulan-ude russia

The roots of the Buryat people start in Mongolia, and they have since been exposed to Buddhist and Christian ways. While the 19th century saw an increase in Buddhist beliefs, the ancient ways of agriculture and isolation are still prevalent in rural Ulan-Ude.

The deep cultural and historical heritage is prevalent in the Buryat village of Ulan-Ude, also called Dom Muzey Agvana Dorzhiyeva. Here you can get acquainted with the locals, learn about their nomadic herding lifestyle and immerse yourself in the diverse customs and traditions.

Book this tour for a traditional dinner and a chance to explore the museum and Datsan Buddhist temple.

Lake Baikal

Lake Baikal is just a few miles away from the city. It’s a definite must-see, either on your way to or from Ulan-Ude. This ancient lake is arguably one of the deepest in the world and is also considered the Earth’s largest freshwater lake.

You can access the lake through hiking trails. After a long trek, you can sit back and watch the Baikal seals in the lake. In winter, it is used for ice-skating, and in summer for wildlife observation.

Book this tour crossing Lake Baikal, where you’ll visit Olkhon island and camp in the middle of the lake.

Where to Eat In Ulan-Ude

You can expect a mixture of cuisines, from Russian food to Asian as well as Italian and other European influences. While you’re in Ulan-Ude, you’ll have to try delicacies like buuzy , which comprises meat wrapped in a soft dumpling. Also, taste bukhuler , which is a meat broth, and of course, finish it off with a delicious glass of fermented mare’s milk called airag.

Getting to Ulan-Ude

There are a few airports in and around Ulan-Ude, so traveling here should not be an issue. You can easily make your way to international airports in Moscow or St. Petersburg. From there, you could also fly into Ulan-Ude in just under six hours.

If you’d prefer a more scenic route, you can make use of the Trans-Siberian Railway, which is the longest railway in the world. This train starts in Moscow and travels through Russia. It joins the Trans-Mongolian line as well as the Trans-Manchurian line. It will take around 3 days from Moscow to Ulan-Ude by train.

You can also complete a 12-day tour along the Trans-Siberian Railway that will take you from Russia, through Ulan-Ude, around the Gobi desert, and into Beijing. While this tour doesn’t spend too much time in Ulan-Ude itself, it’s still a great way to explore the Russian, Mongolian and Chinese regions.

Trans Mongolian railway russia

Since Ulan-Ude is the last stop in Russia along the Trans Mongolian railway, so is this the last stop for you to pick up some Russian souvenirs. NB. It´s both faster and cheaper to take the local bus from Ulan Ude to Ulaanbaatar, the Capital of Mongolia, than to take the train across to Mongolia.

There´s a daily bus leaving at 7:30 AM from Ulan-Ude to Ulaanbaatar, the journey takes around 10-12 hours. I did this bus journey, however, while it´s both cheaper and faster than the train, it´s definitely not more comfortable, this bus journey is personally one of the worst I’ve ever taken. Tickets can be purchased at travel agency offices, or ask your guesthouse to buy them for you at 1100 Rub. There are also daily shared taxis going to Mongolia.

Ulan-Ude Mapped Out

Whether you’ve decided to travel through the urban city or rural wilderness, an Ulan-Ude map will help you find your way. Just in case you’ve gotten disconnected from your GPS , there are a few things to remember.

Ulan-Ude is on the south side of Lake Baikal, a mere 85 miles (136km)  away. If you’re driving from the neighboring city Irkutsk (around 280 miles/450 km), you’ll travel along the P-258 highway and stay on that road.

Once you’re at the foothills of Ulan-Ude, the A-340 highway will take you down into Mongolia. So, if you’re planning on staying in the country, you’ll want to continue along the P-258 highway onto the AH6 highway, which will direct you to other cities like Chita and lead to Yakutsk.

Russia is vast, and travel times between neighboring cities are quite lengthy. So, be sure to keep these major highways in mind, and you’ll easily find your way back.

Final Say on Ulan-Ude, Republic of Buryatia

Ulan-Ude is a fabulous addition to any traveler’s bucket list. There are so many enriching experiences to be had here that there is no doubt you’ll leave the city richer.

Between the excellent accommodation options and culturally diverse experiences, there is a unique adventure waiting to be explored. So, go ahead and book your visa, and get ready for an exciting journey.
