In 2021, the Warner Bros. Studio Tour created new interactive exhibits focused on the company’s recent history, unveiling areas dedicated to the DC Comics universe and the “Harry Potter” franchise.

This week, the popular Studio Tour in Burbank is doubling down on its more distant past.

Warner Bros. is now offering a Turner Classic Movies-branded version of its studio tour that will bring guests to previously off-limit areas of the lot, including vintage animation buildings, a mini rose garden and an apartment that once housed James Dean. The 90-minute tram portion of the jaunt — about 30 minutes longer than the studio’s standard tram excursion — will allow guides to go deeper into the history of the studio’s catalog to deliver factoids related to such films as “Casablanca,” “My Fair Lady,” “Rebel Without a Cause,” “Auntie Mame” and many more.

“We’re off the leash,” says Brad Taylor, a 15-year tour guide veteran with Warner Bros., noting that the TCM excursion will include time for guides to chat with visitors about their favorite films.

The TCM hosts are seen on on the Warner Bros. backlot.

“We get to talk to the guests and really hang out with people who have the same passion that we do,” Taylor says. “I find that ‘classics’ guests are less about behind-the-scenes and more, ‘I can’t believe this is where we are.’ It’s just the look on their faces when they realize ‘Casablanca’ filmed here, or James Dean stood right here.”

The launch of the TCM tour arrives during the network’s 30th anniversary and close to 12 months after classic film fans were given a scare. In June, Warner Bros. announced that layoffs would hit TCM, including some of the network’s top executives, prompting concern from prestige directors such as Steven Spielberg, Paul Thomas Anderson and Martin Scorsese. After garnering national attention, key cuts were reversed and Warner Bros. sought to assure fans that TCM would continue to be handled with care.

Fears about TCM’s decline

Long live TCM! Our culture would be worse off without movies on TV

Without Turner Classic Movies and other channels for movies on TV, we’d lose the instructive pleasures of the happy accident, the unexpected discovery.

TCM network hosts — Eddie Muller, Jacqueline Stewart, Ben Mankiewicz, Alicia Malone and Dave Karger — recorded new video segments for the outing. The tour will take guests into the lot’s Property House, an area not visited by the standard tour. Here, visitors can get glimpses of materials for a full set, including items for a complete Oval Office setting, but expect guides to highlight vintage items, such as a throne from the Errol Flynn pirate film “Captain Blood.”

Danny Kahn, vice president-general manager of the studio tour, says there have been numerous requests over the years from guests to delve a little deeper into the studio’s animation history. That’s why the TCM tour will for the first time take visitors to an area of the lot once known as “Termite Terrace,” which from 1955 to 1964, says Taylor, housed the animation department, a building with a sloped roof designed to capture sunlight. Animation legend Chuck Jones, says Kahn, had an office in the Termite Terrace area in the 1990s despite Warner’s moving animation production elsewhere.

How the Universal Studios tram tour defined the modern theme park

The most important theme park ride ever created? It may just be the Universal Studios tram tour, which dates to the silent film era. Once primarily a behind-the-scenes tour, the trek has evolved to define the modern theme park.

Another unique tour locale is the exterior of the Dean apartment. When Dean resided there during filming of “East of Eden,” it was actually across the street from the lot, the apartment nesting above a pharmacy. But gradual studio expansion has led to the area now being on Warner Bros. property.

“That was an actual drugstore with apartments, and the studio rented it for him,” Kahn says. “I think it was to keep an eye on him and keep him on a short leash.”

The tour will also give tram riders a look at executive life at the studio, allowing them to briefly walk around a rose garden. The manicured spaces once held a tennis court as well as offices and personal screening rooms for the likes of studio mogul Jack Warner, with many of the structures dating to the 1920s. “It’s a really historic area of the lot that hasn’t really changed a lot in all these years,” says Kahn, noting the area is still in use by studio principals. “Jack Warner, when he ran the studio, privatized the first floor. That was a massage parlor that he had beneath his office.”

Staples of the tour, such as a journey around the backlot city streets, a visit to the “Friends” set and cafe and recent additions highlighting the studio’s modern franchise films are included in the TCM trek, as is a pre-tour reception with beverages and pastries. All told, expect the tour to last about 3½ hours. A tour spokesperson says the first TCM-branded outing is scheduled for Wednesday, with trams expected to depart daily after that date. Adult tickets are $95, but there is a Southern California resident discount available for $75.

“It feels so good to have TCM here,” Kahn says. “People understand that the TCM brand is synonymous with classic film.”

The Fox Studio Lot had a legendary New York set on its backlot that was built in the late 1960s to film "Hello Dolly." The set was gradually reduced in size over the following decades and began to fall apart in recent years. Fox demolished the old set and has completed a new New York set that is different from conventional back lot facades because it has stages inside the New York "buildings" where filming can take place. Warner Bros. Hollywood Debuts Historical TCM Classic Films Studio Tour

Stung by criticism, Warner Bros. launches a new tour of its Burbank studios that pays homage to the glory days of Hollywood. How different is the TCM Classic Films Tour from the existing studio tour?

By Jason Cochran

April 17, 2024

One of the frustrations of paying a pilgrimage to Hollywood's movie studio tours is the creeping dominance of corporate marketing in the retelling of American cultural history.

As corporations tighten their grip on Hollywood's most historic film production lots, tours become less about the heritage and craftsmanship that made the studios great and more about franchises and souvenirs—Batman in the 1990s, Spider-Man a decade ago, Harry Potter today. But not everyone goes to Hollywood to see sets from Pretty Little Liars or Friends . Many of us also want to see the stomping grounds of James Dean, James Cagney, and Bette Davis.

Fortunately, recent scuffles in the executive suites at Warner Bros. have, surprisingly, resulted in a newfound appreciation of the past—and it's deepening the scope of one of the company's studio tours.

On April 16, Warner Bros. christened a new variety of its studio tour that's not about superheroes, but, rather, the great pictures and stars from Hollywood's Golden Age.

The new  TCM Classic Films Tour at Warner Bros. was born out of a near-death experience for the channel it's named for.

In 2023, the corporate masters of the popular Turner Classic Movies channel, which has garnered a cult following of viewers and vacationers , began gutting the channel's staff. The move whipped up such a backlash that some of America's biggest filmmaking giants, including directors Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, and Paul Thomas Anderson, united to scold the leaders of Warner Bros. Discovery and to protect one of the few mainstream outlets for classic film.

Almost a year later, timed for the same week as TCM's film festival , which draws thousands of fans to Los Angeles each year, Warner Bros. has launched a special studio tour devoted specially to film heritage.

Many features of the new tour, which takes about three and a half hours, aren't different from the regular studio tour , which will remain available.

The latter "includes a visit to Stage 48: Script to Screen , an interactive sound stage highlighting different steps of film production and iconic sets, including the Central Perk Set from Friends and Leonard and Sheldon’s apartment from The Big Bang Theory . The tour’s grand finale is Action and Magic Made Here , showcasing the DC Universe and Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts series. The tour concludes with A Celebration of Warner Bros. , showcasing awards and original props and costumes from classic titles including Casablanca , The Music Man , and My Fair Lady ."

The difference in the TCM-branded tour lies in the 90 minutes spent scooting around the lot in small-group motorized carts painted in a distinct TCM livery. On the new tour, most of the references and filming locations hark back to movies made when stars were stars.

All Warner Bros. studio tours, even the non-TCM ones, begin with your assigned guide/driver asking your group what movies and stars you're most keen to learn about so that each tour can be somewhat tailored to the interests of the group. But on the TCM tours, guides have truly been trained in the history of the studio system's heyday, and little time is wasted with filler on more recent productions unless tourgoers ask.

In addition to the guides' specialized knowledge, the tour features a few taped introductions by TCM's onscreen hosts.

The TCM tours also add a few stops and sights that the standard tours don't include, such as "the exterior of James Dean’s apartment where he resided while working on the lot; the serene rose garden, which in the early years was Jack Warner’s tennis court and was surrounded by talent dressing rooms; and the Eastwood Scoring Stage built in 1929 where countless titles have been scored."

Frommer's was not taken to any of those spots on the tour preview that was offered to the press. Studio tour staff warn guests that not every location is available on every tour departure.

As on the regular tour, TCM's version visits the Property House (pictured below), where guides point out artifacts used in classic films from the '30s to the '60s.

tcm movie tour los angeles

The new tour isn't a radical departure from the standard offering. More than anything, the TCM Classic Films Tour seems like a simple way to make sure fans of Hollywood's heyday are paired with the studio guides most equipped to inform them, giving guides permission to delve into the all-time greats rather than hawk the latest blockbuster.

In an era when the accountants at Warner Bros. are  literally destroying finished films just to log tax write-offs, simply nurturing a little historical respect can feel like a daring act—and movie fans are lucky to find it.

The TCM Classic Films Tour at Warner Bros. Studios Hollywood is available most days from 8:30am to 3:30pm. Tickets are $95 for adults, $82 for children ages 5–10. Book tours in advance at  wbstudiotour.com .

Time travel machines, at least in the movies, often boast blinking knobs and glowing wheels and the truth is this: You're never sure where they'll take you, once they're off and flying.

📺 Los Angeles news 24/7: Watch NBC4 free wherever you are

But what if you could board an open-air vehicle that also services as a time-traveling device, the sort of airy auto that takes you to stops and spots where some of Tinseltown's titans once worked, created, dreamed, and occasionally lived?

Such a wondrous mode of transportation exists, and you won't need to pass through a silver screen to reach it: It's located at Warner Bros. Studio, where the brand-new TCM Classic Films Tour is now on the movie-loving move.

The tour was unveiled just ahead of the TCM Classic Film Festival , which is shimmering in Hollywood through April 21.

Launched to honor the 30th anniversary of Turner Classic Movies, the tour is putting "a focus on the studio's early days, delving into the timeless allure of classic cinema and feeling the magic of Hollywood’s rich history firsthand."

Television will also receive its due, as well as the many films that famously found their first footing at the Burbank studio.

The Eastwood Scoring Stage, which will celebrate its centennial in just five years, is on the tour, as is a look at the exterior of an apartment that James Dean once lived in, a nearby abode he could retreat to while putting in the hours on a film shoot.

And a rose garden isn't just about the flowers but also love, in the tennis sense: A court once stood there, and none other than Jack Warner, one of the studio's founders, enjoyed some time at the net.

The Property House — the name reveals the structure's purpose — will also be visited, and prop mavens will get to check out artifacts seen in some of the cinema and television's best-known works.

"For 100 years, Warner Bros. has stood for the very best in moviemaking and TCM has continued to spotlight the legacy of the studio with incredible program offerings throughout its 30 years," shared Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy.

"We are thrilled movie lovers from around the world can visit the iconic Burbank lot to experience the TCM Classic Films Tour and celebrate the rich history of the studio's contributions to cinema."

The tour begins with a welcome video from the TCM hosts; look also for historical snapshots, iconic costumes — including outfits seen in "The Music Man," a beloved musical that is synonymous with the lot's charming Midwest Street — and other treats for those who regularly revisit some of the starriest cinematic offerings of the past.

Tickets start at $95 and are available on the Warner Bros. Studio Tour site.

"TCM Movie Locations Tour" Set to Return to Los Angeles on June 26

Three-Hour Bus Tour, Created in Partnership with Starline Tours, Features L.A.’s Greatest Movie Locations on State-of-the-Art Bus

TCM Movie Locations Tour

Originally created for TCM’s 20th Anniversary celebration, the tour is a fun and engaging excursion that brings movie history alive by pairing modern and classic film clips with visits to the locations where they were filmed. The tour begins at the historic TCL Chinese Theatre IMAX ® in Hollywood and carries passengers throughout Hollywood, downtown Los Angeles and surrounding areas, a route that tells the history of the region through the story of the movies. This summer, the "TCM Movie Locations Tour" is scheduled to run Mondays and Thursdays at 1:30 p.m. and Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

"After enjoying such tremendous success with our ’TCM Classic Film Tour’ in New York and the limited run of the Los Angeles tour during the TCM Classic Film Festival, there’s no better way for us to thank our loyal TCM fans for their devotion than by running the tour on both coasts year-round," said Dennis Adamovich, senior vice president of digital, affiliate, lifestyle and enterprise commerce, TCM, TBS and TNT . "The ’TCM Movie Locations Tour’ is a great chance to celebrate classic film in the very heart of the motion picture industry."

The "TCM Movie Locations Tour" features such sites as Echo Park ( Chinatown ), the 2nd Street Tunnel ( Blade Runner , The Terminator ), Ambassador Hotel ( The Graduate ), The Biltmore Hotel (Independence Day, Ghostbusters) and the Gilmore Gas Station ( L.A. Story ), to name a few. It will also include the Roosevelt Hotel , home of the very first Academy Awards and host hotel for the TCM Classic Film Festival, and Hollywood High School , which turned out such stars as Lana Turner and Judy Garland. In addition, the tour makes stops at two exciting and historic filming locations: the Bradbury Building ( Blade Runner , The Artist ) and Union Station ( Bugsy, Catch Me If You Can ).

A veteran Hollywood Starline tour guide provides the kind of expert commentary and behind-the-scenes insights that TCM is known for, with numerous film clips and photos to help visitors envision historic downtown, the original locations of the first movie studios and other film sites of interest. Multiple video segments featuring TCM host Ben Mankiewicz , whose family has a long and illustrious connection to the movie industry, provide additional insights and a true insider’s view.

The "TCM Movie Locations Tour" takes place on a brand-new, state-of-the-art bus with stadium-style seating and a 65-inch HDTV. The bus also features skylight windows and retractable side windows to allow better viewing of the Los Angeles cityscape and movie locations. This marks TCM’s second sightseeing bus tour. In August 2013, the network launched the "TCM Classic Film Tour" in New York, which continues to delight fans with its three-hour tour of some of New York’s greatest filming locations.

Fans can book reservations for the "TCM Movie Locations Tour" online at http://tcm.com/tours .

As a huge fan of classic films, it’s safe to say that the only channel I watch is Turner Classic Movies . For years now, I’ve enjoyed looking up the TCM schedule  to see if some rare or intriguing gem will be on the air. I’ve immersed myself in the thoughtful commentary of longtime host Robert Osborne and, later, Ben Mankiewicz. Today, there are even more hosts working for the benefit of TCM and sharing their wonderful expertise and passion for cinema every day. I never dreamed I’d actually be seeing myself on this beloved channel anytime soon, but I am delighted beyond measure to share my love of classic cinema any way I can.

This year, TCM celebrated quite a few major milestones. For one, the channel turned 25 this year and has celebrated accordingly by flying in 25 lucky fans. The TCM Film Festival itself celebrated its 10-year anniversary. Moreover, TCM has grown TCM Backlot, which offers TCM fans some fabulous experiences, contests, content, and opportunities to interact with other fans. Rather than waiting for the annual film festival, TCM fans have the opportunity to interact with one another all year long through TCM Backlot and the many fun contests and events it provides.

Seeing all of the exciting events coming up for TCM has allowed me to reflect on how delightful TCM has been for a film fanatic like myself–especially through their cultivation of TCM Backlot. As one of TCM Backlot’s charter members, the absolute pinnacle of membership perks was winning the opportunity to visit the previously closed TCM set.

Upon joining TCM Backlot, I started to enter some of the contests. One, in particular, was pretty tempting–the opportunity to be part of the first group to tour the TCM set. This included meeting various individuals who work for TCM, an in-person meeting with Yacov Freedman (TCM Backlot Manager), and TCM Host Ben Mankiewicz. We would likely be filmed on the tour for promotional spots and would get to see Mankiewicz film some introductions for Summer Under the Stars. Finally, we would end our time there with a lunch shared with other TCM talents. I, of course, decided to try my luck and enter the contest.

One evening, while in the calm of my local public library, I received an email saying that I was one of the names picked out for the contest. Of course, I was BEYOND excited about the whole experience about to happen and it took every bit of self-control I had not to start doing cartwheels out the library door. I made my travel arrangements, left plans for the substitute (I was teaching high school English and Film at the time) and soon found myself on my way to Atlanta.

Once I landed in Atlanta, I hit the ground running and started to tour all of the Gone with the Wind (1939) locations I could possibly visit during my whirlwind trip.

The main attraction was the actual TCM tour, which took place the next day. I walked over from my hotel to Techwood Drive, home of Turner Broadcasting, and checked in with the security guard. I headed on into the building and waited as other fellow film fans started to gather up for the tour.

As has always been the case in my experience with fellow TCM fans, we are a very friendly group that exhibits a genuine interest and enthusiasm for classic cinema. It is so easy to strike up a friendship with this as a commonality among us, especially since I feel that being a classic film fan is such a core part of who I am. Naturally, when you get a whole bunch of us together, it makes for terrific conversation on the topic, not to mention the guarantee of walking away with a lengthy list of film recommendations fresh in your head.

Yacov met with our group and initiated our tour of the Turner campus, ultimately leading us to Mankiewicz’s set. We were introduced to various members of the TCM team and had the opportunity to walk around the set after Mankiewicz finished filming his intros and outros.

In addition to feeling so welcomed and appreciated by the wonderful TCM staff, it was fascinating to be able to watch the crew at work. I had certainly seen this set so many times through my television back home but seeing the set in addition to the surrounding area and all of the behind-the-scenes talent and technology required was captivating.

Once we got the chance to spend some time on the set and get some photos with one another, we were given the chance to be interviewed. Being part of this initial group, I was happy to offer up an interview and share my positive opinions surrounding Backlot and this wonderful event.

Along with my interview, many of my fellow tour members also volunteered to be interviewed. In the end, our segments were compiled into a well-constructed commercial advertising TCM Backlot and the different perks and events that members can enter to win.

After our interviews were completed, we had lunch with Yacov, Mankiewicz, and other TCM staff members. Mankiewicz was quite personable and took the time to chat with each one of us and got to know us a bit better. Likewise, he shared some wonderful stories with us. He answered many of our questions, in addition to one that was burning in many of our minds: How was Robert doing? At the time, Osborne was still alive albeit no longer as present at the Atlanta studios due to his health. It was heartening to know that he was doing alright and continued to be his usual positive, warm self. When it was time to part ways, we were each given a terrific parting gift full of fun TCM-related items.

To this day, I am still in touch with the vast majority of Backlot members who were part of this tour. Though I mostly communicate with them via social media, we have also met with one another at the TCM Film Festival . In addition to winning a spot on this tour, I feel so lucky to have enjoyed it with such a fine group of film fans who are so kind and supportive of one another.

On a more amusing note, many of us were tickled by catching our spots on the air or being tagged in other people’s reactions to our appearances.

Moreover, I find that the TCM staff and the channel as a whole are extremely kind and giving. They are so excited about their work and programming and are highly respectful and appreciative of their fans. I am so happy to have a connection with them and continue to applaud their output. As far as I’m concerned, they are the very best and I continue to look forward to many years ahead for TCM.

TCM Classic Film Festival - Hollywood 2024

Individual Tickets

While the ideal way to experience the 2024 TCM Classic Film Festival is with a Festival pass, you may also experience the Festival by purchasing individual event tickets, when available.

After passholders have been seated, open seats will be sold on a first come, first served, standby basis at the individual venue box offices, and be sold just prior to the individual program start time.

Individual tickets are $20 for most screenings and events. Individual tickets to the Official Closing Night presentation of  SPACEBALLS (1987) ,   if available,  are  $30. Students with valid student ID will receive a 50% discount off all individual tickets.

Please note, attendees will be subject to all applicable federal, state and local safety precautions in place at the time of the event. In addition, TCM may, at its sole discretion, implement additional safety precautions to be determined.

Also, individual tickets will NOT be sold for the Opening Night Red Carpet Gala screening or Club TCM—including panels—as these are passholder exclusive events. We regret that children under the age of 5 are not admitted to any events.

The sequel to Tim Burton's 1988 cult classic film will hit theaters and IMAX on Sept. 6. Several stars from the original, including Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder , will reprise their respective roles as Beetlejuice and Lydia Deetz, while Jenna Ortega and Justin Theroux join the cast as new faces.

The movie follows three generations of the Deetz family as they return home after a family tragedy. "Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia's life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid (Ortega), discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened," the synopsis states. "With trouble brewing in both realms, it's only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice's name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem."

Tickets for the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: The Afterlife Experience are on sale at BeetlejuiceExperience.com .
