Site UX needs some work

Got the items I wanted at a reasonable price. Communications could be clearer - site offers in-store pick up but this is for the warehouse only, not the associated brick-and-mortar stores. The warehouse is then also only open Mon-Fi 9:30-4:30, so a little restricted for pick up times. Resolved pick up in the end but not before a wasted trip to the store! Staff there also did not mention the limited warehouse open hours at the time, nor did the email manager when I expressed my intent to pick up on a Saturday.

What a brilliant company, they did as they said they would 😊

What a brilliant company, placed my 1st ever order with them , quite a high value order for several Monster perfect edition books then I though oh dam I need to ask something, so I then sent an email to make an enquiry before they despatched my books, I got a very fast email back and was very pleased with their reply. My set of books arrived exactly as they said they would, well packaged, no creases or anything wrong with the books, all were excellent. I had one very happy 13yr old grandson whom absolutely loved his surprise birthday gift of books. I have already recommended this company to others and I will soon be ordering books again from them for Christmas gifts.

Excellent service online and in store

I ordered two books

The two books I ordered very good came straight away and was very pleased with them Would recommend the site to a friend

Travelling man emailed me to tell me the item I was waiting for was in stock. Order went smoothly. Lots of communication from them. Delivered promptly. Perfect. Would recommend. Excellent service.

Excellent store

Items arrived quickly, well packed and in good condition. No complaints.

Travelling Man Order - Added Bonus

Couldn't have asked for better. Placed an order, they didn't have one item I ordered but offered alternatives. Gave a refund for the item change and then threw in a free item also. They called me directly to ask if I was happy with the swapped item instead of most companies that'll just take the item off the order and then refund the difference. Nice touch from the warehouse and Justin 🤌

Great service, everything arrived on time and well packaged, will definitely use again

Travelling Man sells things like comics, clothing, and games. It's a nice shop and whoever is working there is normally helpful, as I normally go in for a gift rather than for myself. Prices seem ok too and I just think it's a good shop as if you know anyone who loves comics/role play/games then you are bound to find something for them here.

The Angry Old Play and the Nice Young Man

Atri Banerjee has channeled his own experiences into a new production of John Osborne’s groundbreaking 1956 work “Look Back in Anger.”

A man in a black shirt looks straight at the camera.

By Roslyn Sulcas

Reporting from London

The night before the theater director Atri Banerjee was due to leave London for Manchester to start rehearsals for a new show, burglars broke into his house. First he was assailed with racist abuse, then physically assaulted.

It was May 2019, and the Manchester job, directing an adaptation of “Hobson’s Choice,” at the prestigious Royal Exchange Theater, was a big break for Banerjee, who was stepping up after another director withdrew.

“It was a landmark moment for me,” said Banerjee, 30, whose parents are Indian and who grew up in Italy and the Britain. “I had never felt victimized or oppressed because of my brownness,” he said. “Suddenly you realize it’s very easy to be put into a box. It sharpened my political awareness about why theater, so good at celebrating the multiplicity of identity, is important.”

Banerjee was speaking in an interview at the Almeida Theater, in London, where he was rehearsing John Osborne’s groundbreaking 1956 play, “Look Back in Anger,” which opens at the playhouse on Friday . Part of a repertory season called “Angry and Young,” it will run in tandem with Arnold Wesker’s 1958 “Roots,” directed by Diyan Zora.

“Look Back in Anger,” teeming with fury and frustration at the hidebound British class system, sparked the Angry Young Men movement in literature and theater in the 1950s. (The writers Kingsley Amis, John Wain and Alan Sillitoe were also associated with it.) “A watershed in the history of modern drama,” Martin Esslin wrote in The New York Times on the tenth anniversary of the play’s West End premiere, which was followed the next year by a Broadway run.

The play hasn’t had a major British revival in over 20 years, perhaps because of what Rupert Goold, the Almeida’s artistic director, described in an interview as “slightly challenging gender politics,” alluding to the misogynistic abuse that the working class protagonist Jimmy inflicts upon his more genteel wife, Alison.

For Banerjee, it spoke directly to his own experience. “I thought about the attack, what it might mean to be an angry young man who feels disenfranchised, and how that can turn to violence,” he said.

He added that he was interested in theater as a “liminal space” and in “the threshold between characters and audience.” Naturalism, he said, “hasn’t always been my comfort zone.”

Banerjee, who is tall and handsome, speaks thoughtfully and deliberately, pausing often to select the right word. He was born in Oxford, where his father, an economics professor, was teaching, and the family spent time in Canada, New Zealand and the United States before moving to Florence when Banerjee was seven. He went to an international school, but did all his classes in Italian and spent much of his free time watching DVDs of old movies. By the age of 12, he had decided he wanted to be a film director.

The family moved back to Oxford when he was 14 (“Gray England was a shock,” he said), and after finishing high school, he did an English literature degree at Trinity College, Cambridge. There, he began directing at the university’s two student-run theaters, hotbeds for emerging British talent that count Ian McKellen, Emma Thompson, Stephen Fry and Rachel Weisz among their alumni.

Those student shows included the musical “The Last Five Years,” Pirandello’s “Six Characters in Search of an Author” and Shakespeare’s “Comedy of Errors.” Looking back, he said, there was a through line between his work then and now. “A lot of my work has been about memory and the slippage of time,” he said. “Looking back at what I did at 19 or 20, I realize somehow, with a play, you are always telling your own story.”

After Cambridge, still uncertain about what direction to take, Banerjee started working in the press department at the National Theater, in London. That led to encounters with the directors Lindsay Turner, Rufus Norris and Simon Godwin and, encouraged by Godwin, he successfully applied for postgraduate study in directing at Birkbeck College, University of London.

His second year placement was in Manchester at the Royal Exchange, where Sarah Frankcom, then the artistic director, was immediately struck by Banerjee’s “complete engagement with what a piece of theater can do” she said in a phone interview. “There is a heightened theatricality in what he does; he can take you lots of places, but you are never not in a theater,” she added.

It was Frankcom who asked Banerjee to take over “Hobson’s Choice” when a director had to withdraw. An adaptation by Tanika Gupta of Harold Brighouse’s 1915 play, relocated to a Ugandan Asian household in 1980s Manchester, it won Banerjee critical plaudits and the 2019 Stage Debut Award for best director. Then, just as his career was beginning to take off, Covid intervened, and Banerjee spent the lockdowns teaching and directing a film of “Harm,” a new play by Phoebe Eclair-Powell, for the BBC.

When he directed a theater production of “Harm”— one of the first live shows to be staged in London after theaters reopened in 2021 — he put a nine-foot stuffed bunny onstage , which a lone actor eviscerated over the course of the show.

“His work, as with a lot of directors of his generation, is very European influenced,” Goold, the Almeida’s artistic director, said. “I think he starts visually, but he is sensitive and nuanced without forcing an agenda, and he has a calmness and grace about him which is reassuring.”

A slew of productions followed, including a much-admired, neon-lit “Glass Menagerie,” in Manchester; “Britannicus” at the Lyric Theater, in London; and “Julius Caesar” for the Royal Shakespeare Company, which divided audiences and critics with its female actors in the roles of Cassius and Brutus, and Caesar bleeding oil rather than blood.

“Atri has a keen eye for the aesthetic and exploring the world of storytelling through metaphor,” said Ellora Torchia, who is playing Alison in “Look Back in Anger.” She added that Banerjee didn’t avoid “letting us explore the hard, difficult things, and the fact that some of this will be problematic for an audience.” Torchia added that she hoped the production would nonetheless offer a nuanced view of Jimmy’s abusive behavior. “What we are trying to do is tell a story of flaws, people who are struggling,” she said.

For a while, Banerjee said, he was “quite scared” of “Look Back in Anger.” But theater, he said, “is a space to explore things that are dark and shocking. And a place to ask how we love each other in a world that feels broken.”

I Found Truly the Firmest Mattress in the World in Taiwan

travelling man york reviews

When I was a teen, my mom sent me to Taiwan to attend a culture camp for the children of Taiwanese expats (note to all the 台美灣人 reading this: not Love Boat ). I remember getting to my room, putting my stuff down on the bed, and thinking they had forgotten the mattress and somehow put the sheets on the platform. But then I realized this hard slab was the mattress, and I went outside and cried for myself, thinking how much I was to suffer at this foreign boot camp. Then I proceeded to have the best six weeks of my life and fell in love with Taiwan and also the cool, comfortable, firm sleep I got on that economical bunk.

Taiwan’s climate ranges from subtropical to tropical, and the summers are exceedingly hot and humid. The firm bed provided support without stuffiness, a sense of comfort without a sink-in. I have a clear memory of feeling spinally aligned, though I didn’t have that vocabulary at the time. Throughout my life, I’ve pined for that specific bed, testing mattresses marked “firm” in the store but already resigned to disappointment.

Sleepy Tofu, a direct-to-consumer mattress company out of Taiwan, has realized that the Taiwanese diaspora in the U.S. is missing that indulgently ascetic sleep , and in its recent expansion to the U.S., it’s specifically speaking to people homesick for the mattresses of their motherland. Translated from the brand’s site : “In the dead of night, the Taiwanese flavor will make you fall asleep with tears in your eyes.”

It sent me one of its mattresses to try, and it wasn’t kidding about the tears. Obviously, not all Taiwanese people sleep on extra- firm mattresses , but this one ticked the boxes for me. This mattress is joyfully firm. Firmer than a western-facing mattress company would dare to go. Instead of sinking in, you float on top. It’s like Savasana all night long. A hard reset for the day to come.

Taiwanese cuisine celebrates food with a texture described as “QQ,” which means something like bouncy, elastic, and al dente. Firm but with a bit of a give. This is a QQ mattress. For me, the perfect bed. Other members of my family also tried it out. My parents loved it (my mom grew up in Taiwan), my husband did too (he did not grow up in Taiwan); my sister I think preferred something a bit softer for her side sleeping (though I’ll side-sleep on that thing all day). Like any mattress, you really have to try it out — and like many mattress brands, Sleep Tofu offers a 100-night trial.

As a testament to the utterly different mattress expectations of consumers in Taiwan, the Sleepy Tofu mattress I’m describing is listed as only moderately firm. The brand sells an even firmer one called Sesame Tofu, with more coils and a denser foam. You could probably do yoga on it.

The mattresses are 11 inches thick and constructed in a hybrid style, made of pocketed coils and a 2.36-inch-tall polymer foam layer (both made in Taiwan). Graphite is mixed into the foam to wick away heat, and the firm, elastic support keeps you from sinking in and accumulating heat and sweat. The fabric cover is made from 100 percent Tencel , which is known for being breathable and soft.

Sleepy Tofu hasn’t made its full U.S. debut yet. Its aim is to sell Taiwanese mattresses to expat Taiwanese people longing for the sleep they are used to. The site is only in Chinese, and it is taking preorders in waves, shipping in batches a few times a year. Don’t let that stop you — especially if you’ve never been able to find a mattress firm enough for you. It’s easy enough to use the online site with a translation app. Or email them at [email protected] , and an English-speaking rep can help you out. They can easily process a return if it’s too much float for you. I’m keeping mine and ordering a Sesame Tofu mattress.

[Editor’s note: The next order deadline is September 23 and will be delivered in January 2025. If you need a firmer mattress in the meantime, we’ve included a few options available Stateside below.]

How pursuit, shooting death of NYC man unfolded in Orange County: NYSP release details

Portrait of Mike Randall

New York State Police have released new details in the pursuit of a New York City man that led them to the town of Woodbury Wednesday, where he was shot and killed during a confrontation with a trooper.

The man who was shot, 28-year-old Ali Ali, was armed with a knife, which authorities said he refused to drop when confronted by troopers in a wooded area in Highland Mills.

State police also said Ali was wanted in connection with a stabbing being investigated by the NYPD. No further details of the stabbing were provided.

Why troopers were pursuing NYC man in Orange County

According to state police, just after 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, troopers patrolling the Thruway were notified of a stolen 2021 Chevrolet Equinox that was traveling north on the Thruway in Rockland County.

A short time later, troopers spotted the vehicle approaching exit 16 in Harriman in Orange County, and attempted to stop it.

Background: Man who fled Thruway traffic stop shot, killed by NYSP during 'confrontation' in Woodbury

Ali, who was driving the vehicle, failed to comply and continued to travel north.

State police said the vehicle became disabled about four miles north of the exit, struck a tractor trailer and caught fire. Ali was able to get out of the vehicle and fled into a wooded area off the highway in Woodbury.

State police established a command post on Smith Clove Road in Woodbury and began a search with the assistance of numerous other area law enforcement agencies, they said.

What happened during confrontation between Ali Ali and NYSP

Early Wednesday afternoon, a homeowner in Highland Mills notified state police that he captured video of Ali on a trail cam. After reviewing the footage, troopers entered a wooded area off Trout Brook Road, near where the sighting occurred.

At 1:47 p.m., troopers said, they spotted Ali, who had a knife.

State police said troopers ordered Ali numerous times to drop the knife and surrender, but he failed to comply. Troopers twice used a Taser on Ali, who appeared to fall to the ground, but immediately got up, charging at the troopers with the knife.

Murder sentence: Newburgh man gets 25-to-life in death of roommate, impaled with metal broomstick

One of the troopers fired his division-issued firearm, striking Ali. Troopers immediately began life-saving measures, but Ali died at the scene.

State police notified the state Attorney General's office, which responded to the scene. The Attorney General's office usually conducts an investigation of police-involved shootings.

State police were assisted by the NYPD, the Orange County Sheriff's office, the Town of Woodbury Police Department and New York State Park Police.

1 review and 9 photos of TRAVELLING MAN "Travelling Man sells things like comics, clothing, and games. It's a nice shop and whoever is working there is normally helpful, as I normally go in for a gift rather than for myself. Prices seem ok too and I just think it's a good shop as if you know anyone who loves comics/role play/games then you are bound to find something for them here."
