- Top 8 Luxury Mediterranean Cruises: Best Ports and Excursions
From the dramatic rocky coasts of southern Spain and the romantic, sun-dappled promenades of the French Riviera, to the fascinating antiquities of Greece and Croatia’s stunningly clear waters, the Mediterranean truly has it all. With picturesque landscapes, fantastic food, historic and modern architecture, and a warm, welcoming climate, it’s no wonder the Mediterranean tops next to the Caribbean many lists of the most popular cruise destinations.
Couple the bountiful charms of this azure sea with the superb service, all-inclusive cruise fares, and stylish, spacious accommodation that you can expect when going on a luxury cruise, and you have a match made in heaven. When it comes to planning your luxury cruise to the Mediterranean (or “Med” for those in the know), there are a few things to keep in mind. Here we will share some of our top tips for when to cruise the Mediterranean , where to go and what to do, and what destinations you shouldn’t underestimate.
Why Take a Luxury Cruise to the Mediterranean?
Best time to cruise the mediterranean, most popular mediterranean ports, most underrated mediterranean cruise destinations, best luxury mediterranean shore excursions.
To be honest, a better question might be “why not?” After all, the Med is one of the world’s most beautiful places, and it connects a wealth of diverse cultures, cuisines, and experiences. On a luxury cruise, you can experience these cultures one after the other, in style and comfort, with excellent enrichment programs to introduce you to the nuances of each destination. Plus, with the intimacy of small luxury cruises, you’ll be able to visit ports catering to the cosmopolitan, rather than the tourist.
Here are just a few of our best arguments to pick the Mediterranean for your next luxury cruise.
1. The weather
Unlike other equally beautiful cruise destinations like Alaska or even the Caribbean , the weather in the Mediterranean remains relatively warm year-round. While temperatures definitely become milder during the winter months, there’s still no shortage of fun and fascinating activities and excursions to take part in. High season for the Mediterranean falls during the summer when students have vacations and the temperatures can reach sweltering heights. However, for the best weather, opt for a cruise in spring or early fall, when the climate is ideal.
2. Cultural and historical diversity
Nowhere else in the world will you find so many different countries and cultures so easily accessible by cruise. From Portugal to France, Greece to Turkey, Israel to Egypt, Tunisia to Morocco - all of these vastly different countries are accessible by Mediterranean cruises. Don’t stop exploring at the coastal cities - opt for an over-land or ferry excursion to discover some of the Mediterranean’s best-kept secrets (which we’ll discuss more later).
3. Delicious cuisine
It may be a bit cliche to rave about the fine dining in Italy and France, but the Mediterranean’s other destinations boast equally delectable delicacies. Try fresh-caught fish in Croatia, flaky, honey-soaked baklava in Greece, and sun-ripened fruits and olives on the Turkish Riviera. Plus, there’s nothing wrong with tried and true favorites like French wines or Sicilian antipasti. One of the best parts of cruising the Mediterranean is that you can sample multiple cuisines on a single trip.
Plus, more and more luxury cruise lines are partnering with world-class and Michelin-starred chefs to offer passengers fine dining options between ports. For example, Seabourn teamed up with chef Thomas Keller to direct their specialty restaurant. Lines like Crystal Cruises and Paul Gauguin Cruises have each teamed up with a different celebrity chef to provide curated menus as well as custom dishes for cruisers with specific cravings.

It may be surprising, especially if you’re still new to cruising, but the best time to take a cruise is often different from the high season. This is certainly true of the Mediterranean. While the high season for the Med is in summer, usually from late June through August, the best time to visit is actually in the spring or fall. Here are some of our top recommendations for when to go for different experiences:
Best time for beaches
It seems like the height of summer would be best for relaxing on one of the myriad beaches along the Mediterranean coast, and that’s certainly true of many popular destinations. June and July are great times to soak up the sun on Croatia’s clear pebble beaches. Head for southern locales like Malta, Sardinia, and Corsica if you want to cruise in the spring.
Best time for natural scenery
Opt for an earlier cruise in late March or April if you want breathtaking natural splendor. Head to France’s southern coast and the French Riviera for flowers galore, particularly lavender. Of course, if you suffer from allergies, you may also want to keep this tidbit in mind when planning your luxury Mediterranean cruise.
Best time for wildlife
The Mediterranean Sea is home to an abundance of wildlife, but perhaps the optimal time to visit for a closer look is in early summer or early fall. Visit Iztuzu Beach on the Turkish Riviera in May or June to see nesting loggerhead turtles (Caretta Caretta), or come later in August to watch the baby turtles make their adorable dash to the sea.
While any seasoned cruiser will tell you that the most popular and busy ports aren’t always the best , these fan favorites continually surpass expectations and wow new and experienced travelers alike. These Mediterranean cruise destinations add a little something extra to any itinerary.
Nice, France
The French Riviera’s port of choice features colorful architecture, romantic promenades, plenty of beaches, and exceptional shopping. It’s a particular favorite among the luxury cruising crowd for these reasons, and it also offers an excellent entrypoint into other French experiences further inland, like Castle Hill (Montee du Chateau).
Discover luxury cruises to Nice
Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy
The Eternal City may be a common destination for Mediterranean cruises, but its incredible antiquities are anything but boring. Plus, with world-renowned wines and gourmet dining, Rome is a significant hub for foodie cruisers . Add to that a wide variety of luxury shopping - including Prada, Gucci, Armani, and more - and Rome’s long list of attractions becomes even more tempting.
Find luxury cruises calling at Rome (Civitavecchia)
Dubrovnik, Croatia
Once a hidden gem twinkling among the Med’s better-known glitterati, Dubrovnik is now an A-list luxury cruise destination in its own right. Boasting impressive Roman architecture made famous by Game of Thrones, Croatia’s best-known cruise port also offers history-rich excursions into the city.

Istanbul, Turkey
A historic hub of intercontinental trade and exchange, Istanbul is one of the Eastern Mediterranean’s top cruise destinations. Take in the hustle and bustle of bazaar shopping, visit the iconic Hagia Sophia, or immerse yourself in the culture, history, and art of Turkey with a museum.

Discovering a new favorite destination is an incredible feeling. Not only do you have fewer crowds to contend with, but you can also easily feel like a cruise expert or a local. Plus, you can experience the authentic flavor and atmosphere before it becomes overrun by tourists. Here are some of the Mediterranean’s best-kept secrets you shouldn’t miss on your next luxury Mediterranean cruise.
Kotor, Montenegro
This gorgeous bay won’t stay hidden forever, so plan your visit soon. Explore the charming old town, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site , with breathtaking panoramic views of the Dinaric Alps and stunning fjords. The famed pilgrimage route Camino de Santiago also ends in Cadiz. There’s plenty to see and do here, and its rugged, untamed landscape makes it ideal for those looking for more adventurous shore excursions.

Greece’s “island of colors” features over 75 diverse beaches of all shapes, sizes, and types, plus jewel-like waters rippling between sapphire, turquoise, and emerald shades. The beaches range from black sand to white sand, pebble beaches and seashell beaches. Plus, this island boasts an impressive historic background, particularly for art history buffs, as it is the original home of the Venus de Milo.

While the services and amenities onboard a luxury cruise ship are notoriously excellent, the real draw of a cruise is getting to explore the different destinations. The Mediterranean is a particularly excellent place to opt for a luxury shore excursion, and these are some of the best.

Plus, find unique culinary concepts like Le Petit Chef, which features tabletop 3-D projections of “mini-chefs” from Italy, Spain, France, and Japan who present specialty dishes from their respective homelands. And there’s the Dinner on the Edge open-air venue, where rotating menus, often featuring items sourced from port, are presented on a cantilevered platform floating 13 stories above sea level.
Also based in the Mediterranean from spring to fall in 2023 is the 3,260-passenger Celebrity Beyond , an Edge -class ship that boosts the culinary offerings with a specialty restaurant, Le Voyage, helmed by celebrity chef Daniel Boulud, who also serves as the line’s global culinary ambassador.

Best mediterranean cruises for culture vultures.
Some travelers head to the Mediterranean for total cultural immersion—whether their interest is art, wine, architecture, or design—and all-inclusive luxury line Regent Seven Seas Cruises delivers for the culture vulture with carefully curated shore excursions, many of which are included in the cruise fare.
On a 10-night cruise on the 700-passenger Seven Seas Mariner in July, for instance, you might sip wine at the villa of a family-run farm on Italy’s Amalfi Coast, check out unusual art made from discarded industrial waste in Sicily (part of the line’s new eco-connect series of tours ), or sample Maltese food and wine in Valletta. There’s also the opportunity to shop for crafts in the Italian Riviera, learn about perfume-making in the French Riviera, admire scenery that inspired Vincent van Gogh in Provence, and enjoy tapas and a flamenco show in Spain. Regent recently launched special behind-the-scenes design tours that look at architectural marvels in cities such as Marseilles and Barcelona for a deeper dive into the building of these historic places. The 10-night sailing between Rome (Civitavecchia) and Barcelona on July 13, 2023, starts from $11,299/person; 7-night sailings are from $7,999/person; rssc.com .
SeaDream Yacht Club
Best Mediterranean cruises for beach bums
Do thoughts of sun, surf, and sand along the French or Italian Riviera, Spain, Croatia, or the Greek Isles have your swimsuits crawling out of the drawer to pack themselves? Well, consider hopping between the region’s very best beaches aboard a luxury sailing yacht (billionaire bankroll not required). SeaDream Yacht Club will get you there in style, aboard its intimate 112-passenger SeaDream I or SeaDream II , where you can top off a beach day while luxuriating at a Thai-specialized spa, dining on gourmet cuisine, tippling at the open bar, or sleeping in the line’s signature “Balinese dream beds.” For active types, the ships’ complimentary water-sports marina (lowered when the ship tenders and weather permits) comes equipped with personal sailboats, kayaks, Jet Skis, stand-up padddleboards, and snorkeling gear.
The line runs dozens of diverse Mediterranean itineraries annually: One sample weeklong SeaDream I run between Nice and Rome (Civitavecchia) departing August 19, 2023, follows along the shores of Saint-Tropez, Portofino, Italy, and Monte Carlo (with an overnight stay). Mediterranean sailings take place from May through November (typically from 7 to 11 nights in duration); rates from $5,599/person; seadream.com.
Seabourn extends its emphasis on wellness to port via “Mindful Living” excursions.

Best Mediterranean cruises for spa and wellness seekers
The Mediterranean, with its beautiful beaches and welcoming breezes, is just what the doctor ordered for some rest and renewal. The wellness factor increases further aboard the luxury of intimate, 458- to 600-passenger ships from Seabourn , which schedules dozens of Mediterranean sailings each year (from seven nights in duration, from April into November), most of which feature the line’s signature “Mindful Living” excursions ashore. In Kos, Greece, for example, set out to explore the foundation of modern medicine at the archaeological site of Asklepion, or get your heart pumping with a riverfront bike ride through the orchards and vineyards of Croatia ’s Konavle Valley, outside of Dubrovnik.
These wellness-themed excursions are part of the two-year-old “Spa and Wellness with Dr. Andrew Weil” program, a Seabourn exclusive that anchors each cruise with daily yoga, meditation, and fitness classes, along with seminars on mindful living (on topics like healthy aging or spontaneous healing). The holistic approach and teachings stem from Dr. Weil, known as the father of integrative medicine. The onboard spa is a natural extension, where a standard portfolio of treatments (massages, facials, wraps, and beauty treatments) is augmented by alternative therapies like acupuncture, sound therapy, and Chinese herbs. Rates from $3,259/person; seabourn.com .
Get a deep dive into the history of the region with Viking’s educational onboard lectures and discussions.

Viking Cruises
Best Mediterranean cruises for history buffs
With a name like Viking Cruises , it’s no surprise that the cruise line gives a special nod to history on its voyages (its oceangoing ships even have a Viking Heritage Museum onboard, meant to evoke the lives and times of Vikings via replica displays of clothing, weaponry, and more). Through 2023, Viking has three of its ships—the 930-passenger Viking Sky , Viking Mars , Viking Saturn, or Viking Venus —on the popular seven-night “Journey to Antiquities” voyages, on history-rich routes between European capitals of antiquity Rome and Athens. En route, stop off at Naples, Messina (Sicily), Crete, and Kuşadasi, with an overnight in Athens, for excursions that run to spots such as ancient Ephesus, the Minoan Palace of Knossos, Herculaneum and Pompeii, and the Acropolis.
Onboard, a resident historian is available to add color and context to the voyage via talks and roundtable discussions; the library offers history books relevant to the visited ports; and a “cultural curriculum” promises further enrichment via history lectures and destination-influenced programming, such as cooking classes. Rates for the two-week sailing are from $5,498/person; vikingcruises.com .

Discover the cliff-clinging pastel houses of Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast, the blue-domed whitewashed churches of Santorini, the massive columns of the Pantheon, or the priceless treasures of the Vatican Museums. With harbors framed by limestone cliffs, charming cobblestone fishing villages, and miles of pristine beaches, relax and experience it all on a voyage with The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection.
With well-planned routes and inclusions, a memorable Mediterranean cruise from The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection offers all voyagers the ideal combination of destinations, inclusions, onboard amenities, and world-class service that can only be offered by The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection.

Stunning seascapes, ancient architecture and monuments, delicious delicacies, and some of the best art in the world make a trip to the Mediterranean an item on everyone’s bucket list . Linking Europe to Africa and Asia, the Mediterranean Sea offers unmatched beauty, culture, and history. From sun-drenched beaches to ancient ruins, the best way to experience all this breathtaking region has to offer is on a floating resort.
On a cruise, you don’t have to worry about where you will stay that night, check-in and check-out times, or accommodation costs. The biggest decisions you have to make are which of the ship’s restaurants to dine in that evening and what cocktail to order.
From the canals of Venice to the Acropolis in Athens, experience the dolce vita in the Med. Discover the Holy Land, the Greek Islands, and Adriatic countries in the Eastern Mediterranean. In the Western Mediterranean, you’ll find Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, and Monaco.
In Italy, you can see Venice’s Piazza San Marco, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel, and pastel-colored fishing villages on the Amalfi Coast. In Greece, take in whitewashed buildings, turquoise waters, and stunning sunsets. Explore medieval architecture in Lisbon, Portugal, and Old Town Dubrovnik in Croatia, one of the most well-preserved medieval cities in the world.
But the Med is not just a feast for your eyes. Try real port wine from Porto, Portugal; enjoy a plate of paella in Spain; fill up on bread, cheese, and pastries in France; sample fresh homemade pasta in Italy; and munch on moussaka in Greece.
But which Mediterranean cruise line should you choose to experience all the Med has to offer? We polled our readers to help you decide in our 2022 Best of Travel Awards. Below, you’ll find TravelAwaits readers’ favorite Mediterranean cruise lines.
1. Viking (Winner)
It’s no surprise that Viking Cruises tops TravelAwaits readers’ list as Best Mediterranean Cruise Line. After all, this small ship cruise line is touted as the “thinking person’s cruise.” It could also be the fact that Viking does not allow kids under 18. The classy cruise line also doesn’t have casinos or umbrella drinks. There’s no smoking onboard and no formal nights to get gussied up for.
What is included? Wi-Fi, an onshore excursion in every port, regional cuisine , and luxe accommodations. Unlike many other cruise lines, Viking features king-size beds, large showers, heated bathroom floors, private verandas, 24-hour room service, and more. They also offer culturally enriching programs such as guest lecturers, resident historians, regional performance arts such as traditional Greek dancing, an onboard cooking school, and more.
Viking offers several Mediterranean cruises ranging from eight to 29 days. From the turquoise splendor of the Greek isles to the vineyards of Provence, itineraries include Rome’s ruins, Tuscan towns, Antoni Gaudi’s architectural delights in Barcelona, tasting port in Portugal, strolling the car-free alleys in Venice, and the holy city of Jerusalem.
“The team at Viking Cruises will make your stay so wonderful you won’t want to go home. Guests are often so pleased with their trips that they use their onboard discount to book a future Viking Cruise before they depart,” says TravelAwaits writer Judy Freeman. Read more about why she loves this cruise line in her article, How To Make The Most Of Your Viking Cruise Vacation . And if you decide to book a Viking cruise, here are five important things to do to prepare for it .
2. Royal Caribbean
Our Best of Travel Award winner for Best Caribbean Cruise, Royal Caribbean is runner up for Best Mediterranean Cruise. Royal Caribbean Mediterranean cruises explore Greece and the Greek isles; Italy and the Amalfi Coast; Spain, Portugal, and the Canary Islands; and Croatia and the Dalmatian Coast. See one of the oldest “thrones” known to man — a 4,000-plus-year-old flushing toilet at the Palace of Knossos on Crete . Take in the blue and whitewashed buildings of Santorini and pastel-hued houses built into the cliffs of Italy’s Amalfi Coast.
3. Holland America
One of TravelAwaits writer Peggy Cleveland’s favorite cruise lines , Holland America Line is also a favorite of our readers. It is easy to see why with spacious, comfy ships, award-winning service, delicious dining, and plenty of activities. Cleveland recently got to sample the world-class dining on Holland America’s new ship, Rotterdam .
Holland America’s Mediterranean cruises take passengers everywhere from secluded Greek isles to Croatian castles and palaces. More overnights are included at the beginning and end of this cruise line’s itineraries, so guests can spend an extra day in cities like Athens, Rome, and Barcelona. Holland America has teamed up with FOOD & WINE® to offer delightful culinary tours. Sample award-winning olive oils at a family estate on Corfu, paired with local cheese, tomatoes, bread, and wine.
4. Celebrity Cruises
Celebrity Cruises has 7-, 11-, and 13-night Mediterranean cruises . Excursions offer a variety of ways to explore ports of call for families, foodies, and history buffs. See the Parthenon in Athens, Michelangelo’s David in Florence, and the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul . Soak up the sun on the stunning beaches of Palma de Mallorca , witness a spectacular Santorini sunset, walk around the medieval walls of Dubrovnik in Croatia, discover Diocletian’s Palace in Split , and marvel at the caved monastic city of Matera.
Onboard, you’ll experience unrivaled service and entertainment, enjoy world-class cuisine with menus crafted by a Michelin-starred chef, and unwind in the indoor solarium or state-of-the-art spa. Drinks, Wi-Fi, and tips are included .
TravelAwaits writer Rebecca Hall got the opportunity to sail aboard the Celebrity Apex for its Greek Islands and Cyprus cruise as a guest speaker for their onboard Enrichment Program. Read about her account here .
5. Princess Cruises
Known for its immersive destination experiences and award-winning shore excursions, Princess Cruise Lines’ Mediterranean cruises depart from Barcelona, Rome, and Athens. Ports of call include Corfu, Florence, Kotor, Marseille, Mykonos, and Santorini. Experience destinations after dark with Princess Cruises’ “More Ashore” program. Late-night departures and overnight stays let passengers see the sunset in Mykonos and enjoy a gelato after a traditional Italian dinner in Genoa .
Ride along the yacht-lined shores of Kotor in a tuk-tuk, try Koum Kouat of Corfu (a liqueur made from kumquats), and stroll along the ancient streets of Dubrovnik’s Old Town. Princess Cruises’ Local Connections program features an olive oil tasting at an olive tree farm outside of Provence.
Speaking of food, Princess serves freshly prepared regional cuisine with sauces made from scratch, freshly baked bread, and homemade ice cream. The cruise line is also known for its spa, onboard entertainment, and comfy accommodations.
6. Oceania Cruises
A culinary- and destination-focused cruise line, Oceania Cruises has seven small, luxurious ships. Mediterranean cruise ports include Morocco, Turkey, the Canary Islands, Egypt, and Spain. Culinary, wellness, food and wine, and local tours are offered.
Visit Antoni Gaudí’s masterpiece, La Sagrada Família (one of the most unique churches on the planet) in Barcelona , see the slopes of Sicily, and witness the white mountainside villages of Spain . “Overnights in ports such as Istanbul, Jerusalem, and Seville plus many extended evening stays across the region give you the chance to not only visit top attractions, but also create time for in-depth explorations, dinners ashore, and leisurely, meaningful touring,” according to the cruise liner . Plus, Land Programs offer tours, premium hotel stays, and airport transfers before and after your cruise.
7. Azamara Cruises
Even if you’ve been to the Med before, Azamara® promises you’ll find something new to love about the area when you sail it with them . Like a boutique hotel at sea, its fleet of relatively small ships offers an exclusive club-like experience. Suite guests can enjoy the sweet life with butler services.
Featuring local encounters, overnight experiences, and curated shore excursions, trips tend to take a couple of weeks. Overnight stops provide opportunities for deeper cultural immersion while excursions offer a more intimate look at local life. Take in an evening orchestra performance in an ancient amphitheater or prepare a meal in Mykonos. Dubbed AzAmazing Evenings , one such one-of-a-kind experience is complimentary. Spirits, beer and wine, 24-hour room service, and gratuities are also included.
Whether you want to visit the Italian Riviera, the French Riviera, or The Holy Land, Azamara has a cruise for you. See biblical sites in Isreal and take an excursion to the land of Galilee and the town of Nazareth.
Onboard, enjoy activities, nightly shows, enrichment programs, personal training, fitness and nutrition classes, and shopping. Treat yourself to a spa treatment, or book an oceanfront massage.

The coastal playgrounds of Europe will be at your complete disposal with a luxury Mediterranean cruise. Time spent on this fabled waterway, kissing the coasts of storybook islands and sweeping into centuries-old ports will quickly accord you a cosmopolitan European attitude and all the panache that goes with it. From small fishing villages to grand piers to yacht-filled marinas, a chic Mediterranean cruise will easily remind you many times over that life is meant to be lived – and lived
well. Hopping from port to port presents one history lesson after another, propped up with architecture and art you’ve only ever read about; museums and ruins that hold stories and secrets of centuries past. Spain’s Costa del Sol along the Alboran Sea and the islands of the
Balearic Sea lead the way to the French Riviera and the allure of St. Tropez and Monaco. Both coasts of Italy have an ample supply of adventure through the Tyrrhenian Sea touching on Sardinia and Corsica or in the Adriatic Sea, which leads to further exploration of Croatia and Montenegro. Meanwhile, the islands of Greece and Turkey are as numerous as they are fascinating. Further east, your Mediterranean exploration can carry on, perhaps to Crete or Cyprus, or reach all the way to the Holy Lands. A luxurious “floating hotel” awaits at the end of the day, ready to satiate all your culinary desires before whisking you off to the next exciting port of call. From Gibraltar to Haifa, the stimulation and inspiration never need to stop, each place in the sun more incredible than the last.

Rooted in Greek mythology, Athens is alive with stories from civilizations of the past. On a cruise to Europe departing from Athens, arrive early to tour the remains of ancient lores — like the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Acropolis — dine at the city’s lively tavernas and admire iconic sculptures bathed in natural light within the Acropolis Museum.
Until it was popularized by the 1992 Olympics, Barcelona was a hidden gem amid Europe’s diverse landscapes. Now it’s widely recognized for its architectural masterpieces and spirited customs. On European cruises from Barcelona, leave enough time before you depart to visit Park Güell – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – and feel inspired by the colors and unique artistry that lie in the park and throughout the entire city.
Experience the captivating charm of Naples, Italy, with a range of enriching excursions. Explore the ancient ruins of Pompeii, where well-preserved mosaics and frescoes offer a glimpse into Roman life. For a taste of luxury, visit the stunning Isle of Capri. Enjoy a scenic jetfoil ride, explore Anacapri, and savor a southern Italian lunch with fresh, local ingredients. Wine enthusiasts can hike to Mount Vesuvius' summit for breathtaking views, followed by a vineyard tour and wine tasting paired with local delicacies. On a Mediterranean cruise to Livorno, travel to Florence or Pisa where artifacts abound. Capture snapshots of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, stop by Michelangelo’s David statue at the Accademia and walk up to the “Gates of Paradise” at the Baptistery. Or explore the countryside and meander through the region’s rolling hills that bear vineyards and green olive groves.
Nestled within Boka Bay lies a medieval gem. Kotor is enrobed in ancient houses, palaces and churches that speak to its 12th-century origins. On a Greek cruise, dine on Montenegrin cuisine in the home of a local chef, appreciate 14th-century Venetian art at St. Tryphon’s Cathedral and taste regional wines along the riviera. Or see another side of the city when you kayak through the tunnels of Lipa Cave.
Discover the vibrant culture of Istanbul, Turkey, with a variety of excursions. Explore the iconic Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, marvel at the treasures in Topkapi Palace, or wander through the bustling Grand Bazaar. Take a scenic Bosphorus Cruise, visit the ancient Underground Cistern, or experience a traditional Turkish breakfast. Each excursion offers a unique glimpse into Istanbul's rich history and dynamic present. Immerse yourself in the magic of this transcontinental city on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess.
Famous for its beaches and spirited lifestyle, Mykonos is the heartbeat of Greece. Embark on a jeep safari past the city’s windmills, lighthouses and lakes. Or soak up a day of relaxation on the beach with the city’s Cycladic architecture as your backdrop — all on a Greek cruise with Princess.
Italy’s capital city is something of a dream. Grand chapels and stone angels line the roads, whispering secrets of Rome’s past. On a European cruise from Rome, arrive early to toss a coin into Trevi Fountain. Legend has it, you’ll be guaranteed a return to The Eternal City. Then walk in the footsteps of Emperors at the Colosseum, and receive a blessing from the Pope at St. Peter’s Square.

Why Cruise the Mediterranean
In lands where the culture is as flavorful as the cuisine, the splendor of the Mediterranean speaks for itself.
World-Class Dining
Captivating cuisine
With mouthwatering entrees and confections, the Mediterranean invites you to embark on a gourmet tour through iconic cities. Reawaken your taste buds with Italian classics like pastas, pizzas and gelato. Or fill your plate with gyros, keftethes and baklava on a Greek cruise. From breakfast to dinner and every delectable dessert in between, the best is before you with Princess.
Bold reds and crisp whites
The countryside of Italy and Greece are home to some of the most flavorful wines around the globe. With sun and warm temperatures year-round, vineyards are flourishing with grapes by the harvest season. Sip on Italy’s red wines, or sample Greece’s white blends. From sweet Lambruscos to earthy Bordeauxs, fill up your glass on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess.
Ancient Ruins
Where history comes to life
From towers and temples to cities and shorelines, the Mediterranean is sprinkled with remains of civilizations past. Step back in time on a tour through ancient ruins on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess. Imagine life as a gladiator at the Colosseum, explore Greek mythology at the Parthenon and discover the archeological excavations of Pompeii — a lost city and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A vision of natural beauty
Visions of sparkling coasts and crystalline waters welcome you to the Mediterranean. Dip your toes on the black-sand coast of Santorini on a Greek cruise. Head to Salerno to spend the day in Positano relaxing on the white beaches and admiring the pastel houses that decorate the cliffs around you. Or travel to Mykonos with your loved ones and daydream on the city’s long stretch of golden sand and stroll in the sunshine.

Or stroll along the streets of Dubrovnik’s Old town, one of the most well-preserved medieval cities in the world.
Local connections
From chefs and beverage makers to artists and guides, meet the many personalities that call the Mediterranean home with our Local Connections program. Or explore the Archaeological Museum of Naples with a local artist, and accompany them for lunch to dive even deeper in Italy’s art scene.
More ashore

reasons to set sail in the Mediterranean
Imbued with the history and culture of the surrounding countries, the Mediterranean is home to many incredible sites and a unique way of life. A cruise in the Mediterranean is the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in this remarkably diverse region.

When’s the best time for a Mediterranean cruise?
3 reasons to set sail in the Mediterranean
To appreciate the history and the UNESCO sites
From the Greeks to the Romans and Ottomans, men have been vying to rule the Mediterranean Basin and control its shipping routes since ancient times. Today, the numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites are a testament to the region's economic and cultural wealth and to the diversity of the Mediterranean people. Setting sail on a Mediterranean cruise is a chance to admire a myriad of perfectly preserved artefacts and unmissable sites: the Acropolis of Athens; the Theatre of Epidaurus; the sacred island of Delos; the ancient city of Nessebar; the archaeological ruins of Delphi; the medieval city of Rhodes; the historic centres of Valletta Dubrovnik, Kotor and Syracuse; and the relics of Pompeii, Rome and Venice.
To enjoy the laidback lifestyle
White limestone rocks, soft green pines clinging to the cliffs, cloudless blue skies... The landscapes of the Mediterranean are as distinctive as they are beautiful. From the fields of olive trees and lavender to the crystal clear waters and the streets lined with orange trees, exploring this region is an adventure for all five senses. Not to mention the gourmet markets, overflowing with fragrant flowers, delicious fruit and vegetables, and sweet honey. These local gathering places are the perfect chance to wander from stall to stall, taking in the colours and accents all around you. Travellers who want to embrace the Mediterranean lifestyle need to slow down and appreciate la dolce vita: the diverse flavours, the people who talk with their hands, and the warm sun that caresses your skin.
To stand at the crossroads of civilisation
From the Iberian Peninsula to the Turkish Riviera, the Mediterranean is where Europe meets Africa and Asia. Throughout history, the sea has allowed men to travel from shore to shore and from east to west , discovering new curiosities and trading knowledge and goods. The Mediterranean boasts a unique blend of cultures : small ports with Byzantine architecture, ancient Ottoman cities, Greek and Roman ruins, Hispano-Moresque palaces... From the Black Sea to the Adriatic and from the Aegean Sea to the Strait of Gibraltar, every community has its own distinctive style and way of life.
The Amalfi Coast
A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, the Amalfi Coast is the jewel in Italy's crown. Its verdant cliffs, fragrant citrus terraces, and the picturesque hillside villages of Amalfi, Ravello and Positano have made it famous all over the world. Legend has it that the gods of Olympus, who wanted to listen to the song of the Sirens, used to walk the path that overlooks the coast. From high on the cliffs, they could see the entire Gulf of Salerno, all the way out to the island of Capri and the tiny Sirenuse Archipelago from which the bewitching voices came.
Ancient Greece
Outstanding navigators, intrepid explorers and talented builders, the ancient Greeks were constructing incredible monuments throughout Mediterranean as early as the 5th century BC. The Acropolis of Athens may be the most famous example, but the majestic Theatre of Epidaurus is the jewel of the Peloponnese, showcasing the architects' understanding of acoustics and harmony. The second-largest ancient theatre is found several thousand kilometres away in Ephesus, Turkey, an ancient port city dedicated to the goddess Artemis. This vast venue could hold over 24,000 spectators.
Idyllic Greece
What do you picture when you hear the word "Greece"? Whitewashed houses, immaculate hillside villages with royal blue accents, fishing hamlets frozen in time ... These Greek dreams can become a reality: admire a sunset over the sea from Santorini, enjoy the clear waters and beaches of Mykonos, or lose yourself in the pedestrianised lanes of the small island of Hydra. The Greek Islands are the perfect place to get away from it all and enjoy a moment of pure serenity.
The Corinth Canal
The Corinth Canal cuts through the isthmus that shares its name, separating the Peloponnese from the Greek mainland. Inaugurated in 1893 , it is just over six kilometres long, allowing commercial and tourist vessels with a draught of less than eight metres to avoid a 400-kilometre detour around the peninsula. The canal is enclosed by walls on each side, reaching a maximum height of around 50 metres. Watching the ship sail through this narrow waterway from the outer decks is a truly unique and unmissable sight.
The Dalmatian coast
Embrace the laid-back lifestyle in the small seaside town of Hvar , walk the ramparts of Dubrovnik , the "Pearl of the Adriatic", or wander the walled city of Split . From historic centres to crystal-clear waters, the Dalmatian coast truly has it all. Take Montenegro, for example, where wooded hills and authentic villages overlook the Bay of Kotor , the perfect spot for secluded swimming.
Succumb to the enchanting charms of Istanbul, previously known as Byzantium and Constantinople. Drawing on a multitude of influences, this magical city offers the best of the Greek, Roman and Ottoman worlds. The Topkapi Palace, the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia are just some of Istanbul's magnificent monuments, not to mention the innumerable stalls of the Grand Bazaar. A stop in Istanbul is also an excellent chance to admire the carved wooden palaces along the Bosphorus.
Perched on the cliffs at the southern tip of Corsica , Bonifacio is a classic Mediterranean citadel. Bonifacio has always enjoyed a privileged position in terms of trading with the rest of the Mediterranean. Due to its strategic location between Italy and France, the city has been claimed by many different powers over the years, including the Republics of Pisa and Genoa. Today, the southernmost city of metropolitan France stands proud above its idyllic surroundings . Secret coves, a charming harbour and a range of nature walks make it an essential stop in the Mediterranean.
The Alhambra
If your cruise is stopping in Malaga, you might want to consider heading inland. Some 120 km away, the beautiful city of Granada is home to the equally breathtaking Alhambra palace . Built in 1238 by Mohammed ben Nazar, it is a testament to the Muslim presence in Spain from the 8th to the 15th century. Take your chance to explore every room of this incredible structure, from the Nasrid Palaces to the famous Court of the Lions. Its incredible stucco decorations , arabesques and columns will have you at a loss for words. The Partal Gardens with the Tower of the Ladies and its basin are particularly exquisite. Victor Hugo himself was inspired by this magical place: "The Alhambra! The Alhambra! Palace that geniuses have golden as a dream and filled with harmonies" ( Les Orientales , 1828).

Experience Luxury at Every Turn on a Russia Cruise
Russia is a vast, breathtaking country known for resplendent cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg, where world-class art, unique architecture, and rich history await. Beyond its biggest cities, however, there are remote villages and fishing towns that thrive despite a menacing climate, making Russia home to a wilderness more beautiful than you could possibly imagine.
Once the capital of imperial Russia, today St. Petersburg is a creative hub full of art, culture, and cherished institutions just waiting to be explored on a Russia cruise. From breathtaking ballet and opera centers to ornate palaces and cathedrals, the City of Tsars still feels every bit the royal city it once was. Get to know another side of Russia in Petropavlovsk, a port town where 29 active volcanoes and the rugged Kamchatka Peninsula contrasts with its snow-capped mountains and inviting thermal hot springs.
With the safety of our guests and crew always our top priority, we are removing St. Petersburg, Russia from upcoming itineraries in 2022, due to the current situation in Ukraine. Our thoughts are with all who are impacted by this conflict.
Russia Cruise Highlights
Fascinating history.
Centuries of history mark every street and attraction of St. Petersburg. Marvel at the Church on Spilled Blood, a memorial to Alexander II known for its breathtaking mosaics, or explore centuries of imperial history with a visit to the Winter Palace. Board a high-speed train to Moscow and see the world-famous Kremlin and the Red Square. In Petropavlovsk, discover the history of Russia’s far east at the Military Glory Museum.
Local Cuisine
Explore the flavors of historic St. Petersburg on a journey to a local market under the expert guidance of our Celebrity Chef. Stroll through popular markets in the city, admire fresh local produce, artisanal cheese, caviar, natural honey, fresh fish, and choice meats. Sample some of the market’s delicious offerings before you source ingredients with your chef on board. In Petropavlovsk, sample traditional Russian delicacies like borsch, smoked fish, and baked Kamchatka salmon.
Arts & Culture
St. Petersburg is home to an astounding array of cultural attractions to explore. Visit one of the largest art museums in the world at the State Hermitage Museum, where you’ll see priceless works of art by Rembrandt, Picasso, Van Gogh, and more. Stroll the grounds of Peterhof Palace and witness one of the most impressive private collections of porcelain in the world. A night of Russian ballet at one of the city’s lavish theaters is a can’t-miss experience.
Featured Ports
St. petersburg.
Colorful, metropolitan St. Petersburg is one of Russia’s greatest cities, decorated with incredible palaces and grounds like the Winter Palace and the Peterhof. Called “The Venice of Russia,” St. Petersburg’s winding canals and cobblestone streets rival Europe’s greatest cities. Watch a once-in-a-lifetime Russian ballet at the Mariinsky Theatre, or take a high-speed train on a day trip to Moscow.
Petropavlovsk
Venture off the beaten path to the far east of Russia and enjoy a more rustic side of the country in Petropavlovsk. Thanks to its large population of hefty Kamchatka black bears, Petropavlovsk is a perfect getaway for animal enthusiasts hoping for bear sightings. Explore a traditional Kamchatka village, or get close to Siberian huskies at a local kennel. Fields of bubbling geysers, an active caldera called Lake Kurilskoye, and an entire museum dedicated to the area’s volcanic activity are reminders of East Russia’s powerful landscape.

We have just booked a cruise to the Baltics for next year. I am trying to find out the average cost for a day trip to Moscow from STP. I have searched several times, and whilst I have read reviews and reports about the trips etc - I cannot actually see any examples of the costs. I imagine its quite expensive - but we want to do it so I need to budget LOL !!
Any ballpark figures ? :D

We did the Moscow trip through our cruise ship in late July 2008. Its cost was a little under $1000 pp. Now, that cost through this cruise line is a little over that $1000 pp cost. Now, most are using the high-speed rail connection versus the air flights as we did. I have seen some other numbers from other cruise lines and/or private firms that run $700-850.
Why cheaper or the differences? As cruise lines are pressured to keep their "sticker price" low, they need to make up some "margin" with ship tours, beverages, spa stuff, etc., to help cover their costs and gain some profit. Second, different tours provide various features. Our tour included going inside the famed and spectacular Kremlin Palace. Most Moscow tours don't feature that option and you cannot just walk up there and get in on your own. That Palace is where the Czars were crowned and all of the current/recent Russian leaders assumed their powers.
We could have saved a little if we had used a private tour to go to and visit Moscow, but, with my wife's pushing, we felt it was worth it to pay a little more, do it through the cruise line. If there had been any problems or mix-ups, it was the ship's duty to "make it right" and we would not have to worry.
If you have three days in St. Petersburg and/or have been there before, then the Moscow tour can work out very well. It's not cheap, but in my view, worth it!! Both are a few of my visuals from this super great city with such interesting history and dramatic architecture.
THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

One of the Kremlin Wall Towers in Moscow:
Walking on the famed Red Square of Moscow:
St. Basil's sits on Red Square and dates back to its 1555-61 construction on the orders of Ivan the Terrible (Ivan IV). It commemorates the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan and marks the geometric center of the city. This location has been the hub of its growth for Moscow since the 14th century. It was the tallest building in Moscow until the completion of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower in 1600. This church was near destroyed in the 1930’s when Stalin was in control.:
Here is a small sampling of the Kremlin Royal Treasures of the Czars: Eggs & Jewels insicde the famed Armory.:
Moscow’s subways are called the “People’s Palaces” with their marble coverings and unique designs for each of the different and many stations.:
This is the interior for Moscow's most historic church, Assumption Cathedral or the Cathedral of the Dormition, inside the Kremlin walls. It is the mother church of Muscovite Russia. The church stands on Cathedral Square and was built in 1475–1479 by the Italian architect Aristotele Fioravanti. It was erected on the spot of an older 14th century cathedral of the same name:
We did the day trip to Moscow with Alla-tour and were very pleased with our tour. Our guide whose English was great was a wealth of information and the day went very smoothly. I checked the web site and Alla's prices for 2012 range from $884 a person for two down to $542 a person for 6 with the 5% cruisecritic discount. So if you can get a group together the per person price goes down considerably. You can try to do this on the roll call section of cruisecritic.
We did not go to the Palace and as Terry says this is not included generally in tours. However, we did go to the Diamond Fund, an amazing display of crown jewels and jewelry in the Armoury building but not really part of the Armoury. I would think you could include this if you had a small group and really wanted to see it. It is quite small and does not accommodate a large group. You can google "diamond fund kremlin" to learn more.

Below are a few more visuals on Moscow that are more "interesting". Fascinating to having seen both cities, back-to-back. It really puts all of this unique Russian history and architecture in better perspective.
