Top Bahamas FAQs

When’s the best time to take a cruise to The Bahamas?

Celebrity Cruises sails to The Bahamas year-round. The peak season is from December to early spring, while May and June tend to be wetter. Rain tends to fall in the late afternoon in short, sharp showers, so this shouldn’t be a deterrent from traveling.

Hurricane season is typically from June to November although, fortunately, The Bahamas is rarely affected by hurricanes. There are many systems in place to detect any hurricane weather along your route, ensuring your ship’s captain and crew will be able to chart a path around any bad weather or make modifications to the itinerary to keep you safe. Celebrity’s state-of-the-art ships are built for stability, keeping movement in rough seas to a minimum.

See our blog post about cruising during hurricane season for more information.

Do I need a passport?

It is the responsibility of each guest to identify and obtain all required travel documents and have them available at the pier when necessary. Before leaving home, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the required travel documents you will be asked to provide prior to boarding the ship. You’ll find more information here .

Not all Bahamas cruises require a passport. If you are an American citizen traveling from the U.S. to The Bahamas or Mexico on a closed-loop cruise, starting and ending at the same U.S. port, a state-issued ID and an original U.S. birth certificate are sufficient.

On Bahamas cruises that call at other Caribbean ports, you can enter with your U.S. passport book, passport card, Trusted Traveler card (Nexus, SENTRI, or FAST), or an enhanced driver’s license. See our blog post for more information.

What should I pack for a cruise to The Bahamas?

When packing for a cruise to The Bahamas, you’ll need clothing for a warm, sometimes humid climate. Bring plenty of beachwear, a sun hat, sunglasses, coverups, water shoes if you’re visiting coral beaches, and reef-friendly sunblock.

If you book a snorkeling excursion, all gear will be provided. If there are places where you may want to snorkel independently, consider bringing your own equipment.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through coverups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps.

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip-flops are not considered Smart Casual.

Each itinerary features one to two more “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos.

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theater.

What are some things I can do on my cruise?

The Bahamas offers a range of activities to enjoy during your cruise. In Nassau, you could relax on beautiful beaches on Pearl Island or the Blue Lagoon. Join a watercolor painting class, snorkel over coral reefs, and even swim with friendly pigs. Learn about Nassau’s history, and sample conch fritters, the local specialty. If you’re traveling with kids, you could spend a day exploring Aquaventure waterpark at Atlantis Paradise Island and its waterslides, pools, river rapids, and vast aquarium.

In Bimini, you could relax on a pristine beach in an exclusive resort and swim in the warm, crystal-clear water. If you prefer a more active day, you could hand-feed wild stingrays, swim among reef sharks, or snorkel over the wreck of the Sapona, now colonized by tropical fish.

Perfect Day at CocoCay, our award-winning private island, is the place where you can be as adventurous or as indulgent as you wish. Fly down the tallest waterslide in North America, or whizz along a zipline. Take in the views from 450 feet above the shore in a helium balloon. Enjoy swimming in the largest freshwater lagoon pool in the Caribbean. Or elevate your experience with a luxurious private cabana, either on the powdery beach at Chill Island or perched directly over the aquamarine water.

How long are Bahamas cruises?

Cruises to The Bahamas are three to six nights long. On the shortest Bahamas cruises, you will have a day to explore Nassau and a full day to enjoy the many amenities of your Celebrity Cruises ship.

Other short cruises include Bimini and CocoCay, or a different combination of Key West and Nassau. Slightly longer voyages of five nights visit Key West, Bimini, and CocoCay. On a six-night voyage from Tampa, meanwhile, you will visit Nassau and Bimini and have three full days to enjoy the luxurious amenities of the ship.

What ports do you visit?

We visit three ports in The Bahamas: Nassau, Bimini, and Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s award-winning private island.

What can I do on board the ship?

Celebrity’s luxurious ships offer a wealth of activities. Bask by the shimmering pool, join a yoga or meditation class in the Fitness Center, or indulge in a blissful treatment in the Spa.

You’ll find a wide variety of places to dine, with menus crafted by our Michelin-starred chef. Enjoy BBQ specialties at the al fresco Lawn Club Grill (on Celebrity Silhouette and Celebrity Reflection) and marvel at the antics of the 3D characters who “prepare” your dinner in Le Petit Chef.

Enjoy the ship’s upscale bars and lounges, from the lively Martini Bar, where skilled mixologists entertain as they prepare your cocktail, to the beautiful Sunset Bar, a popular gathering place for pre-dinner drinks with friends, with infinite views of the blue ocean. You’ll find live music all over the ship late into the night, whether you want to dance, listen to jazz, or attend a Broadway-quality show in the Theatre.

Elevate your experience on board by choosing The Retreat , where you’ll luxuriate in a beautiful suite and have access to an exclusive lounge and the exceptional Luminae at the Retreat restaurant.

Where do Bahamas cruises depart from?

Tropical Caribbean island surf with palm tree on the beach.

Tropical Caribbean Cruises

Tropical Caribbean cruises to Key West are ideal as a family cruise or a romantic adventure. Several literary legends have called the island home, most notably Ernest Hemingway and Judy Blume. Key West has plenty of character, and plenty of characters. Swaying palm trees and shimmering waters are ubiquitous in these parts, but only tropical cruises to Key West deliver sunset parties at Mallory Square and live music on Duval Street, plus scurrying chickens, gentle manatees and the southern-most point in the continental U.S.A. Every tropical Caribbean cruise to Key West includes a day at Half Moon Cay, our top-rated private island in the Bahamas. Grand Turk and Amber Cove are also featured on these itineraries.

Royal Caribbean’s Star to Debut in 2025 with New Experiences from Port Canaveral

  • August 20, 2024

Star of the Seas

Royal Caribbean International’s Star of the Seas will offer an array of vacation experiences from Port Canaveral, Florida, when it debuts in August 2025, the company announced in a press release.

The ship will feature attractions such as the fastest and tallest waterslides, over 40 dining and drinking options and unique adventures at destinations like Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas.

Highlights include the Lincoln Park Supper Club, a 1930s Chicago-inspired dining experience, the Category 6 waterpark, seven pools and the adults-only Hideaway with a suspended infinity pool.

“Star of the Seas is the second bold act of this exciting, new era of vacations first introduced with Icon of the Seas, and it’s putting the world’s best vacation on the map at yet another top travel destination,” said Michael Bayley, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean International.

“Between Miami and Port Canaveral (Orlando), more adventurers than ever can set their sights on the only vacation that combines the best of all vacations – from the beach retreat to the resort escape and the theme park adventure – with experiences that have and will continue to make headlines and memories for years to come.”

The Star of the Seas will have eight unique neighborhoods with the company highlighting the following five in a news announcement:

  • Thrill Island: Features the Category 6 waterpark with six waterslides, the Crown’s Edge skywalk and thrill ride, the FlowRider surf simulator and mini golf.
  • Chill Island: A three-deck area with four pools, including the largest pool at sea, Royal Bay, and the swim-up bar Swim & Tonic.
  • Surfside: A family-friendly neighborhood with water play areas for kids along with dining options like Surfside Eatery and The Lemon Post bar.
  • AquaDome: Featuring ocean views, the AquaTheater brings shows with high divers, aerialists, robots, dancers and more, as well as dining options at the AquaDome Market and The Overlook bar.
  • The Hideaway: An adults-only beach club scene 135 feet above the ocean, with a suspended infinity pool, DJ, bar and whirlpools.

The Star of the Seas will also feature reimagined favorites, including the Royal Promenade with ocean views, the world’s largest kinetic art sculpture and 15+ dining and entertainment options. The ship also features an exclusive Suite Neighborhood.

The Star will join the newly-launched Utopia of the Seas in Port Canaveral, offering guests options for weeklong Caribbean cruises or shorter three- or four-night Bahamas getaways. Royal Beach Club Paradise Island in The Bahamas will debut in late 2025, expanding Royal Caribbean’s destination experiences.

Royal Caribbean's next massive ship will sail from Port Canaveral with a dog and a Chicago-themed restaurant

Ashley Kosciolek

Get ready, Orlando: Royal Caribbean is basing another massive cruise ship in Port Canaveral beginning in 2025, and it will have a resident canine and a super-exclusive supper club that's an ode to the Windy City.

Star of the Seas , which sets sail next summer, will bring with it a slew of innovations that debuted on what is currently the world's largest cruise ship , Icon of the Seas — but with a few adjustments. Largely, though, the line says the original implements have been a tremendous success, leaving little that needs to be tweaked.

"With Icon just coming out, we wanted a little time to learn what was working, and it's turned out — I don't want to say everything is working, but instead I'll say — everything is working," Jay Schneider, Royal Caribbean 's chief product innovation officer, said during an interview with TPG. "The ship has done so well resonating with our guests across the board. New concepts are doing phenomenally well."

Here's what will carry over from Icon of the Seas , what's new and what you can expect from Star of the Seas' itineraries.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

What's returning

cruises to bahamas and caribbean

One of the most talked about aspects of Icon of the Seas is its chief dog officer, Rover. Yes, you read that correctly: There's a dog who lives on board and interacts with passengers. The concept has gone over so well that a second dog, Sailor, has been "hired" to fill the position on Star of the Seas.

"That program ... has been very successful, so we're excited to add the next chief dog officer to our fleet," Schneider said.

As with its Icon Class predecessor, Star of the Seas will focus heavily on youth and family with what Schneider said is an evolution of Surfside, the line's first purpose-built family neighborhood. The outdoor space, which takes up most of Deck 7, features a carousel, an arcade, a candy and ice cream shop, family-friendly food and drink outposts and the ship's family playground and water park area.

Star of the Seas will also see the return and full rollout of kid tracking. Using free wearable technology, parents can opt in to track their children's whereabouts while on the ship.

The wildly popular AquaDome — an indoor space covered by a glass dome — will also make a return appearance. As on Icon of the Seas, it will house the ship's AquaTheater high-dive and acrobatic shows, as well as the AquaDome Market, Royal Caribbean's first food hall concept.

What's different

cruises to bahamas and caribbean

A popular new addition to Icon of the Seas was the highly exclusive Empire Supper Club, a for-fee, adults-only, formal restaurant with a 1930s New York City theme. It features both food and entertainment in an intimate setting that accommodates just 38 people per night. The venue's eight-course meal costs $200 per person.

On Star of the Seas, the space will return under the name Lincoln Park Supper Club, featuring a similar experience but with a different menu and decor that's reminiscent of Chicago. (Schneider also told us the Supper Club will return with a Hollywood theme on Icon 3, the currently unnamed third ship in Royal Caribbean's Icon Class, set to debut in 2026.)

"Our Supper Club concept was never meant to stay the same," Schneider said. "It's kind of ... following the sun, the rotation of the Earth if you want to think of it that way. So, we started in New York [with the Empire Supper Club]. ... The evolution now moves to the Midwest; it moved to Chicago."

According to Schneider, the venue will continue to be the great "eatertainment" that's been so successful on Icon, with the core of the experience remaining the same.

"The difference is the theme, the decor, the interior, the music, and even the menu will kind of shift to a Chicagoland theme," Schneider said. "As we get to future Icon [Class ship]s, Icon 3, which we haven't named yet, will move to Hollywood."

Other tweaks include expanding amenities for passengers booked in Ultimate Family Townhouse suites, which can sleep up to eight people. These accommodations are some of the most expensive cabins afloat. They include kid and adult sleeping areas, an in-suite slide, a movie-viewing room, a karaoke machine and spacious indoor and outdoor living areas. Details about the specific added amenities have not yet been revealed.

Royal Caribbean will also expand the number of ways to play in its Adventure Ocean kids clubs.

"We have lots of great technological ways for kids to play, but one of the things we've heard is [that people want] more analog ways," Schneider said, noting that Star of the Seas will offer additional nondigital classic games like foosball.

Star of the Seas passengers can also expect more hot tubs than on Icon of the Seas, as well as what Schneider called a "pearlier" version of the Pearl, an indoor sphere that functions as an artistic stairway and a support structure for part of the vessel.

Itineraries

cruises to bahamas and caribbean

Star of the Seas will join Utopia of the Seas in sailing from Port Canaveral , about an hour from Orlando , Florida's theme park capital.

"We're bringing the world's best family vacation to one of the biggest family markets in Orlando and Port Canaveral," Schneider said, noting the latest play in Royal Caribbean's efforts is to capture families who might be in the Orlando area for other reasons than a cruise.

Michael Bayley, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean, shared a similar sentiment during a media briefing to talk about Utopia of the Seas in July.

"One of the reasons we put this brand-new Oasis Class [ship, Utopia of the Seas] into this market is that we really expect to see a certain amount of demand coming from tourists who are going in [to Orlando], either for ... Disney or Universal," he said.

Despite the line's similar reasons for positioning both Utopia of the Seas and Star of the Seas in Port Canaveral, the ships' itineraries will differ. While Utopia offers short three- and four-night Bahamas voyages, Star of the Seas will operate seven-night sailings to the Eastern and Western Caribbean .

Eastern Caribbean cruises will call on ports like Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; and Perfect Day at CocoCay , the line's private island in the Bahamas. Western Caribbean routes are set to visit destinations like Cozumel , Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; Costa Maya , Mexico; and Perfect Day at CocoCay.

Schneider said Star of the Seas will also call on Royal Caribbean's two forthcoming Royal Beach Clubs, set to open in the Bahamas and Cozumel in 2025 and 2026, respectively.

Meanwhile, Icon of the Seas will continue to sail seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean voyages from Miami , featuring what appears to be a larger variety of ports than Star of the Seas. Examples include St. Kitts and St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands; St. Maarten, the Dutch side of St. Martin; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; Roatan, Honduras; Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico; Perfect Day at CocoCay; and Labadee , Haiti, another of Royal Caribbean's private destinations.

Andrea Santillan

  • August 21, 2024

Ahead of its August 2025 debut, Royal Caribbean disclosed details about its next Icon-class adventure.

Star of the Seas’ long list of amenities includes over 40 food and beverage establishments, two suspended infinity pools, six record-breaking waterslides, and wraparound ocean views across eight neighborhoods.

An aerial view of a cruise ship in the ocean on its Inaugural Sailing.

Five of the neighborhoods can only be found on the cruise line’s two Icon-class vessels, Icon of the Seas and the upcoming Star of the Seas:

Thrill Island is the first waterpark at sea. It has family raft slides, a drop slide, mat-racing slides, and more. Crown’s Edge is a thrilling skywalk perched 154 feet over the ocean. You’ll also find classic favorites like the FlowRider surf simulator and mini golf here.

Chill Island is the perfect place to grab a drink or snack, lounge by one of its seven pools, and catch your favorite DJs and bands. Each pool, including the largest pool at sea, offers a unique ambiance and the best ocean views.

The interior of the Royal Caribbean's Star of the Seas showcases several decks with balconies, a central promenade lined with shops, colorful seating areas, and Neighborhoods and Attractions for all ages. The top deck features thrilling water slides, creating an unforgettable experience for passengers.

Surfside is the ideal retreat for families with young kids. Small children will enjoy playing at Baby Bay and Splashaway Bay, while parents can get a well-deserved break at Water’s Edge pool. The Lemon Post bar and Surfside Eatery have menu options for kids and adults.

The AquaDome offers a variety of entertainment. It’s a relaxing oasis by day and a happening hotspot by night. Bask in wraparound ocean views at The Overlook Bar and Overlook Pods while indulging in food and cocktails. Don’t miss the AquaTheater’s shows featuring aerialists, divers, dancers, and robots.

Treat yourself to a beach club vacation at The Hideaway , an adults-only neighborhood 135 feet above the water. Its suspended infinity pool, dedicated bar, DJs, panoramic ocean views, and outdoor whirlpools give off beach club vibes.

Familiar Favorites on Royal Caribbean

A brightly colored multi-story building with open-air patios and shuttered windows stands majestically. People stroll along a tree-lined path with outdoor seating, reminiscent of the charm you'd find aboard the Royal Caribbean's Star of the Seas or in one of their vibrant neighborhoods and attractions.

Star of the Seas will see the return of classic favorites from Icon of the Seas. Over 30,500 natural plants will line Central Park’s open-air venue. Meanwhile, Royal Promenade’s jaw-dropping views, the largest kinetic art sculpture on Earth, the Lincoln Park Supper Club, Lou’s Jazz ‘n Blues, sushi and champagne pick-up windows, and the Suite Neighborhood have been reimagined for the second Icon-class vessel.

The LNG-powered mega ship will join Utopia of the Seas in Port Canaveral next summer. Together, they will take guests to the Bahamas on 3-night weekend and 4-night weekday vacations. This is a great opportunity to visit the cruise line’s exclusive island resorts, Perfect Day at CocoCay and the  Royal Beach Club Parad ise Island, which opens in late 2025.
