Welcome to our world

The Dabchick Wildlife Reserve (DWR) is situated in the Waterberg region of the Limpopo province. The reserve is roughly two-and-a-half hours’ drive from O. R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.

DWR is over 1 000 hectares in size, which allows us to be involved in various conservation projects, as well as cater for visitors who want to experience the African wilderness and all its inhabitants, big and small. We offer the choice of luxury accommodation or a more rustic experience, according to your tastes.

Dabchick Wildlife Reserve offers different activities and accommodation, according to your needs – experience the bush in the comfort a luxury tented camp , or attend specially designed courses in a rustic tented bush camp .

𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐣𝐚𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐚 (𝘼𝙘𝙩𝙤𝙥𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙤𝙧𝙣𝙞𝙨 𝙖𝙛𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙣𝙪𝙨) 𝐈𝐔𝐂𝐍 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐬: Least Concern A striking bird with chestnut brown plumage, a white throat, and a distinctive pale blue shield on its forehead, the African Jacana is a true beauty of the wetlands. Common across sub-Saharan Africa, these birds are found in areas like Kruger National Park and thrive in shallow pools, lakes, and dams where floating vegetation is abundant. However, they are known to travel up to 300km when these water sources dry up. 💡Dr Pamela Oberem notes, “At Dabchick, the African jacana males are all busy building nests on lily-covered ponds, hoping to attract a female (she is polyandrous). Males incubate eggs and look after young. An iconic feminist bird.” Known as ‘Jesus birds’ for their ability to seemingly walk on water, their elongated toes allow them to delicately tread on floating vegetation, a unique trait captured in their Afrikaans name, 𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙩𝙤𝙤𝙣 (‘long toe’). Precocious from birth, jacana chicks leave the nest soon after hatching, with their devoted father attending to them. 🎬 In times of danger, the male will hide the chicks beneath his wings, their long toes peeking through the feathers. 2024 𝙒𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙 𝙍𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙤 𝘿𝙖𝙮: 𝙎𝙖𝙛𝙚𝙜𝙪𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖 𝙁𝙪𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙍𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙤𝙨 🦏🦏 ‼️In Africa, poachers killed a total of 586 rhinos (mostly the more numerous white rhino species) in 2023, more than the 551 detected killings in 2022. Most poaching incidents occurred in South Africa which has the largest rhino population on the continent. There were poaching incidents also recorded, but in much lower numbers, in Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The population of around 6,421 critically endangered black rhinos fell by 1.0% as a result of poaching last year. Exciting News Alert ‼ The TOOG Area Pack is denning ‼ A few weeks ago, the TOOG Area Pack settled into a den site for the fifth year in a row! This is great and promising news after the pack was poisoned in December and six dogs were devastatingly killed. African wild dogs are seasonal breeders, with denning season taking place in the Waterberg from about May - September. During this time, the pack remains stationary at a den site to raise the alpha pair's newest litter of pups. Pups have not been confirmed yet, as disturbance to the den site is kept to an absolute minimum and will only be confirmed in a few weeks using trail camera footage. However, their denning behavior does indicate the presence of new pups and we are all eagerly awaiting confirmation. The Mabula Ground Hornbill Project was founded in 1999 and since its establishment has grown from a tiny project simply trying to learn how to reintroduce a complex, long-lived species like a ground-hornbill, to becoming the national conservation lead agency. In South Africa, where most research studies on the species have been carried out, it is listed as 𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝. The species is under severe pressure with only +/- 1 500 left in South Africa. It is an incredibly beautiful bird that, on the rare occasions it is seen in one of our national parks, elicits a lot of enjoyment and a very positive response. The presence of southern ground hornbill is also an indication of the health or otherwise of our environment. 💡The Mabula Ground Hornbill Project was founded in 1999 and since its establishment has grown from a tiny project simply trying to learn how to reintroduce a complex, long-lived species like a ground-hornbill, to becoming the national conservation lead agency. BirdLife South Africa BirdLife International This is done in a multi-faceted approach combining good science, culturally bespoke education and awareness programmes, and wide stakeholder engagement. Ultimately the goal is to down-list the species from Endangered to Least Concern in South Africa, and to share the conservation lessons and tools with neighbouring states that are also at risk of losing their southern ground hornbill populations. To achieve this primary objective, the project aims to complete three long-term goals: 1) by securing the current population with no further declines, 2) rebuilding existing populations and areas where the species historically occurred but has become recently extinct, and 3) to establish southern ground hornbills as a flagship species to aid in the conservation of the habitats they utilise and other species occurring in these ecosystems, such as vultures. 💡Goals are all interlinked, boosting one another, and are the pillars that will allow stakeholders to complete the long-term goals for the species.
