“NASA's largest rocket engine test facility.”

John C. Stennis Space Center in south Mississippi is one of 10 NASA field centers in the United States. Because of its important role in engine testing for five decades, Stennis is NASA's program manager for rocket propulsion testing with total responsibility for conducting and/or managing all NASA propulsion test programs. Stennis tested the first and second Saturn V rocket stages for NASA's Apollo Program, including those used to carry humans to the moon. In fact, in the late 1960s and early 1970s, there was a saying in the communities surrounding Stennis, "If you want to go to the moon, you first have to go through Hancock County, Mississippi." In 2009, Stennis completed 34 years of testing space shuttle main engines used on more than 130 low-Earth orbit missions. The high-performance, liquid-fueled engines provided most of the total thrust needed during the shuttle's eight and one-half-minute-flight to orbit. All space shuttle main engines had to pass a series of test firings at Stennis prior to being installed in the back of an orbiter. Stennis also provided testing for engine components, design modifications and shuttle-related needs as they arose.

About the Center

This is one of the city's 16 recreation facilities and the newest, one of a kind two story facility combining mostly elementary and teen activities on the lower half. The second story is dedicated more to adult programming, such as the dance room, soundproof music room, pottery and social activities. The second story balcony overlooks the beautiful gymnasium, which houses several basketball leagues, some of which have been in this center for over fifty years.

History of the Center

The original Roberts Youth Center was dedicated to the youth of our city by Mrs. R. W. Roberts in memory of her husband, Mr. Roberts. The 16,500 sq. ft. facility opened in May 1958. In May of 1975, to accommodate the growing need for adult recreation programs, two homes were purchased and converted into program space. Our new facility replaces the outdated centers on the 50th anniversary of Roberts Recreation.

INFINITY Science Center is one of the newest – and most fun – destinations for STEM learning in the Mississippi Gulf Coast region.

INFINITY is a non-profit organization and serves as the official visitor center for NASA’s Stennis Space Center and its resident labs and offices. Each of the 30+ federal and state agencies, universities and industries at Stennis falls into either an Earth or Space science category. Few people realize that the entire northern Gulf Coast is rich in leading edge, world-class space, military, oceans and weather research, plus ship building, chemical manufacturing, engineering support, petroleum and high tech operations.  It’s INFINITY’s vision to be the focal point for Earth and Space Sciences education and dialogue along the Gulf Coast.

Visitors to the 35,000-square-foot science center enter a world where discovery truly is endless. The fun begins with outdoor exhibits such as a tsunami buoy, a U.S. Navy riverine training boat, and the colossal Apollo Saturn V first stage.

Just inside the front entrance in the  Natrium , check out our Engineering Workshop as you design and build your own inventions, or learn about more than 200 species of carnivorous plants in the Carnivorous Plants Conservatory.

Experience LIVE presentations ranging from animal adaptations to future exploration of Mars in our  X-SPHERE-ience Theater.

In our Earth and Space Galleries, you’ll find simulators and artifacts, video theaters, Smithsonian-loaned artifacts, and a life-sized, walk-through mockup of the International Space Station’s Destiny module. INFINITY’s Space Gallery offer glimpses into space suit technology, new space rockets, and more. The gallery features pre-Apollo history and a progression of NASA programs from Apollo and Gemini to International Space Station and the new SLS program, designed to take the first humans to Mars. INFINITY’s largest space exhibit, the Apollo 19 Saturn V first stage, which is viewable from the Space Gallery, was originally slated for the cancelled Apollo 19 mission. See INFINITY’s newest indoor space exhibit, the Apollo 4 command module that was launched as part of the first “all-up” test of the Saturn V rocket!

INFINITY’s 3D Immersive Theater  boasts a state-of-the-art laser 3D projection system and surround sound audio to take the movie experience to the next level. Enjoy award-winning content from the world’s top providers, including Giant Screen Films, BBC Earth, K2 Communications, National Geographic, Cosmic Pictures, and more.

NASA’s Stennis Space Center near Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, announced Wednesday it will continue its historic in-space autonomous systems payload mission aboard an orbiting satellite through a follow-on agreement with Sidus Space, Inc.

“We are excited to report the historic ASTRA (Autonomous Satellite Technology for Resilient Applications) mission will continue,” said Chris Carmichael, chief, Stennis Autonomous Systems Laboratory (ASL) branch at NASA Stennis. “We look forward to working with Sidus Space to demonstrate the capabilities of the NASA Stennis payload and our autonomous systems team.”

With this new agreement, the ASTRA payload will be used to collect onboard data on satellite systems and support management of the satellite’s Electrical Power System (EPS). The NASA Stennis ASTRA system will monitor and autonomously optimize the satellite’s battery system, ensuring the satellite continues to operate as needed for the course of its remaining mission lifetime. The ASTRA EPS management capability provides a new, innovative level of adaptability and efficiency for monitoring the satellite’s ongoing operations.

Developed by NASA Stennis to fly and demonstrate an autonomous systems hardware/software payload, ASTRA is the on-orbit mission. The NASA Stennis ASTRA technology demonstrator is a payload rider aboard the Sidus Space LizzieSat-1 (LS-1) small satellite. Partner Sidus Space is responsible for all LS-1 mission operations, including launch and satellite activation.

The LS-1 small satellite launched into space on the SpaceX Transporter 10 rideshare mission March 4 and deployed the same day. Following payload activation by Sidus Space, the NASA Stennis team worked with the company to establish a telemetry link to send and receive data in the ASTRA Payload Operation Command Center located at the NASA site. The ASL team continued to checkout and verify operation of ASTRA, confirming in early July that ASTRA primary mission objectives were successful.

The team is now focused on demonstrating autonomous system management as part of the LS-1 satellite’s planned four-year mission. “We are excited about the opportunity to continue this unprecedented mission,” Carmichael said. “Every step helps advance our autonomous systems work and lays a foundation for continued development and success.”

The NASA Stennis ASL team works to create safe-by-design autonomous systems. NASA’s ASTRA demonstrates technology that is required by NASA and industry for upcoming space missions. The ASTRA computer on the satellite runs a digital twin of key satellite systems, which identifies anomalies, and autonomously generates plans to resolve those issues.

The ongoing success of the ASTRA mission comes as NASA Stennis moves forward with strategic plans to design autonomous systems that will help accelerate development of intelligent aerospace systems and services for government and industry.
