KISS announces a final extension to its ‘End of the Road’ farewell tour

The legendary rock band Kiss has announced its final tour dates, taking a spin across North America and ending with a final bow in New York City’s Madison Square Garden. 

The “End of the Road Tour" lists 19 shows, kicking off Oct. 29 in Austin, Texas; hitting stops in California, Washington, Illinois and Canada; and closing with two final shows in New York City on Dec. 1 and 2. 

The iconic rockers, who kicked off their career in New York City, said ending the tour in Manhattan will bring their careers full circle. 

“KISS was born in New York City. On 23rd Street. Half a century ago. It will be a privilege and honor to finish touring at Madison Square Garden, 10 blocks and 50 years from where we first started,” the band said. 

The band’s lineup includes two original members, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, along with drummer Eric Singer and guitarist Tommy Thayer. Some of the band's biggest hits are “I Was Made for Lovin’ You,” “Rock and Roll All Nite,” “Detroit Rock City” and “Heaven’s on Fire”

Tickets go on presale March 6.

One of the marquee names in the entertainment industry for five decades strong, Kiss first announced their final tour in 2019. The aptly-named “End of the Road Tour” kicked off on January 31, 2019 in Vancouver, Canada and ran for a year before it was delayed due to Covid. The tour picked up again in the fall of 2021 and has taken the band around the world since then. Tonight’s show marks the end of 13 legs of the tour, and the band’s 250th tour date.

Based on the current leg, tonight’s setlist is expected to include Kiss hits like “I Was Made for Lovin’ You,” “Detroit Rock City,” “Beth” and “Rock and Roll All Nite.” Stanley and Simmons remain the only original members of Kiss that are still touring with the brand. The current lineup consists of them, Tommy Thayer (lead guitar, vocals), and Eric Singer (drums, vocals).

And while tonight’s show may be the end of the road for Kiss in more ways than one, don’t count the band as retired just yet — the rockers have teased that while their touring days are over, they’d be interested in exploring a Las Vegas residency and possibly recording new music.

Review: KISS is worth more than a deuce as iconic band rocks the Gorge for final time

If this is really the end of the road for KISS, it’s one of the more impressive swan songs in rock history. KISS no longer writes or records material, but the legendary band pours everything into its show.

The final KISS concert ever, according to vocalist-bassist Gene Simmons , at the Gorge on Saturday night will be memorable for the 20,000 fans who spanned from toddlers to folks who approached octogenarian status. Speaking of those within shouting distance of 80, Simmons, who is a spry 72, and his co-conspirator, vocalist-guitarist Paul Stanley, 69, are getting up there.

It’s remarkable how animated the members of KISS are at such an advanced age. Their physicality isn’t that different from what it was when I caught the band for the first time 44 years ago at the late, lamented Spectrum in Philadelphia. That show, my first, is a distant but indelible memory for an elementary school kid blown away by the sheer spectacle.

I’m still impressed by the endless pyrotechnics and over-the-top eye candy. KISS capped its two-hour performance with an extended “Rock and Roll All Nite,” which included endless confetti showers that were so intense, I couldn’t help but become giddy, and those around me a few rows from the stage in front of Simmons felt the same way. Smiles and laughter (how often does that occur during a hard rock concert?) were ubiquitous.

The show commenced at 8:45 p.m., after an hour of video and hype, with the first of many explosions and the greatest song the band has ever composed, “Detroit Rock City.” Each of the band’s four members, including guitarist Tommy Thayer and drummer Eric Singer, were lowered to the stage on massive risers.

The anthemic “Shout It Out Loud” followed, and KISS was off and running. During “Deuce,” footage from the band’s salad days hit the video screen. It was a reminder, with the help of makeup, that KISS has aged well. And they knew exactly where they were Saturday night, shouting “Washington!” multiple times.

But the greasepaint doesn’t help a senior citizen gyrate around the stage. Stanley, who sings and speaks between songs, is in remarkable shape sporting his trademark vest. The starry-eyed lover character still shimmies around exactly like he did during the 1970s. Stanley, who still performs with a bit of a bare midriff, ziplines out to a small stage to belt out “Love Gun” and “I Was Made for Lovin’ You.”

Both songs, which are among the catchiest in the KISS cannon, still hold up, particularly the former. It’s surprising that the latter aged so well since some members of the KISS Army were less than crazy about a disco-influenced song written and recorded by their favorite band in 1979. However, there was KISS more than 40 years later still cranking out the infectious hit with the image of a disco ball behind them.

Simmons, looking sinister as always in his demon makeup, still breathes fire, as he did during the 1982 deep cut “War Machine,” and spits out blood, which the audience experienced during “God of Thunder.” The electrifying evening also included requisite and outstanding drum, guitar and bass solos.

There were some curious choices for the setlist, such as why dust off the forgettable “Heaven’s on Fire” and, from 1985’s “Asylum,” “Tears Are Falling”? Why not play “Parasite,” which is one of the greatest songs in KISS history, and “I Stole Your Love”?

If this is the end of KISS, let it be known that KISS isn’t just a visual experience. Over the course of its lengthy career, KISS has crafted some solid songs that are timeless, such as “Black Diamond,” which was fortunately part of the band’s set.

Sure, KISS has had its share of misses, but that’s typically how it goes for those who write and record material for 40 years. And when it comes to live spectacle, the band is second to no act.

If the current tour really is it for the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers (inducted in 2014), they are a rock and roll rarity, a band who went out on top and on its own terms. Rock on, KISS!

Kiss Talks End of the Road Tour, Announces North American Dates

After 45 years of full makeup, tall boots and elaborate costumes, KISS is hitting the road for their final tour.

After 45 years of full makeup, tall boots and elaborate costumes, Kiss is hitting the road for their final tour. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band will launch their End of the Road Tour on Jan. 31 in Vancouver, B.C., at Rogers Arena and play an additional 43 dates throughout North America for their farewell excursion.

“This time out is far beyond what we have done before, not just because of technology. It is because the meaning of this tour is so, so great because we have been an indelible part of people’s lives, but guess what — people have been an indelible part of our lives,” Kiss guitarist Paul Stanley tells Billboard . “A thank you is in order, but also one last time to live up to what everybody says we have been and what we are.”

“When we introduce ourselves for 45 years with you, [you] wanted the best, you got the best, the hottest band in the world. The bar is very high, maybe the highest. We’re in competition only with ourselves,” singer Gene Simmons says. “We don’t wish any ill will to anybody else, but we’re too busy being the most fabulous band on planet earth. Look at us. Just one look and you go ‘Wow.’”

KISS Announces 'End of the Road' Farewell World Tour

The End of the Road Tour will include band members Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer for the multi-year run that promises dates until at least 2020. The current North American dates will hit major markets including Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, Detroit, Montreal, Boston, New York and Miami. The final North American date is scheduled for April 13 in Birmingham, Ala.

“One thing for sure is that this is the last tour. What goes beyond that is really hard to say,” Stanley says of what will happen to the band beyond their End of the Road dates. “The tour may go three years, but once we play your city, it is done. That is our big thank you.”

“We’re going to take it nice and slow because we are not like the wonderful bands who wear sneakers and T-shirts and show up with a guitar somewhere,” Simmons says, adding that there is nothing wrong with that. “For us to move anywhere, this is the 600,000-pound gorilla. We can’t move without having tractor trailers up the wazoo. We leave a big imprint and that’s how we like it.”

The band promises bigger than ever stage theatrics, technology and brand-new attire. Simmons explains that each member has designed new outfits for the tour, put together and embellished with that signature Kiss flair, including nine-inch platform boots.

“These are new outfits that we took a long time to craft. All of us design our own stuff. At the end of the day we are fully complete by ourselves,” Simmons tells Billboard . “We’re not only in Kiss, we’re fans of the band. I’m on stage with these guys. I look across the stage, and wow. We’re the greatest band on earth.”

Simmons, Stanley, Thayer and Singer will all continue to don their unique makeup in character as the Demon, Starchild, Spaceman and Catman, respectively.

“This tour is really the last chance for everybody to come, but especially those people who have never seen Kiss before. This is the last opportunity to come and see the wow that [Simmons] is talking about,” adds guitarist Tommy Thayer. “Not only that, it is the last opportunity for the tried and true Kiss army to come out and see us one last time as well. So be there.”

Each night of the tour, the band says they will perform hits from their expansive decades-long catalog. Songs will range from their 1974 debut album to well into the 1990s and beyond.

“For all the audience saying ‘When are you going to record a new album or will you play a deep cut?’ Why? We have ‘Detroit Rock City,’ ‘Love Gun,’ ‘Rock and Roll All Night,’ “Shout Out Loud,’ ‘Firehouse,’ ‘Hotter Than Hell,’ and the list goes on and on,” says Stanley. “There isn’t room for some obscure song. Songs that are obscure are obscure for a reason.”

Stanley adds, “And if we’re going to please a handful of diehards, the real crazy diehards and have 20,000 other people go ‘What’s that?’ or “Let’s go out and get a Coke’ then we are failing the masses. We wouldn’t do that.”

Kiss will be offering VIP experiences and special Kiss Army fan presales beginning on Oct. 31. Kiss meet and greet experiences will be available beginning Tuesday (Oct. 30) at 10 a.m. local time through Epic Rights.

KISS Announces May 2022 U.S. Tour Dates

KISS has announced a handful of new U.S. shows as part of the band's ongoing "End Of The Road" tour. The four rescheduled concerts will take place in May after they were postponed last year. All previously purchased tickets and VIP packages will be honored for the new dates.

As previously reported, KISS will also headline this year's Welcome To Rockville festival on Thursday, May 19 in Daytona Beach, Florida. GUNS N' ROSES , FOO FIGHTERS and KORN will close out the rest of the four-day event.

KISS launched its farewell trek in January 2019 but was forced to put it on hold in 2020 and part of 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"End Of The Road" was originally scheduled to conclude on July 17, 2021 in New York City but has since been extended to at least the end of 2022. The trek was announced in September 2018 following a KISS performance of the band's classic song "Detroit Rock City" on "America's Got Talent" .

Last fall, KISS frontman Paul Stanley said that the final concert of the "End Of The Road" tour will likely happen within the next year and a half.

Last October, KISS 's second Las Vegas residency was canceled, with fans who already purchased tickets via Ticketmaster having been notified that the shows were no longer taking place. The cancelation came a day after Rolling Stone magazine published a story in which a group of KISS roadies suggested that the lack of COVID protocols enforced on "End Of The Road" led to the death of a longtime guitar tech, 53-year-old Francis Stueber . Stueber died of coronavirus in his Detroit hotel room on October 17, just two days after being quarantined.

The crew members claimed the tour didn't take strict enough safety measures, including not testing everyone regularly. In addition, some crew members allegedly disguised their illness and/or faked vaccine cards.

KISS 's current lineup consists of original members Gene Simmons (bass, vocals) and Stanley , alongside later band additions, guitarist Tommy Thayer (since 2002) and drummer Eric Singer (on and off since 1991).

Formed in 1973 by Stanley , Simmons , drummer Peter Criss and lead guitarist Ace Frehley , KISS staged its first "farewell" tour in 2000, the last to feature the group's original lineup.

The current KISS tour of Australia has been coming for quite a few years now. I honestly can’t remember just how many times this tour has been postponed with the onset of the COVID pandemic from early 2020. But here we are. The band are doing a final(?) run of Australian dates as part of their last outing as KISS ; and I use the question mark as we have heard this before. Now as stated, the band has alluded to farewell tours in the past, but they have just kept on going, and have kept selling out stadiums worldwide for as long as I can remember. I recall vividly the Sydney gig in 1997, the full reunion tour in complete makeup, and I also recall vividly, the countless tours they have done since in Australia. The die-hard KISS fans are unbelievable, so dedicated, unwavering in their adulation, and relentless in their motivation to drop so much coin on their beloved band, and they are all here tonight. But there are also some curious onlookers in the stadium tonight, deciding to see what all the fuss is about, and I can tell them a mile off! This is the second, and last show on the Sydney leg, and the stadium and surrounds have a nice feel to it. There are also a lot of families here, generations of KISS fans, or the to-be-initiated KISS fans. The stadium is not sold out like last night, but there is more than a healthy crowd present, and the important people are here.

The support act tonight is Battlesnake , a Sydney band who describe themselves as “a noxious synthesis of amphetamine and gasoline.” I have actually never seen these guys before and their onstage presence was like a healthy concoction of power metal meets fantasy/medieval-style metal with the band completely decked out in chain mail helmets, shoulder pads and all-in white budgie smugglers. The audience took to them well and if you’re looking to catch them at a follow-up show, they’re playing at the Oxford Art Factory on September 1st… Pack your best tighty-whities and head on down!

KISS hit the stage just passed 9pm. By now everyone is in the room and the feeling around the walls is quite amazing, a lot of energy. As the large curtain with the KISS logo is raised a united scream fills the room. Then, as the lights go down a further, an even more heightened scream fills the room as Led Zeppelin’s ‘ Rock N Roll’  is buzzing through the PA. Finally, as the curtain drops, KISS descend from the roof on individual platforms amongst smoke, lasers, fire and an elaborate light show. Yes, they have left nothing out!! The room, the crowd, and even the walls are electric! This is just what you would expect from the opening of a KISS show, big lights, pyro, the stage moving, loud playing and a class track, ‘Detroit Rock City’ . The song sounds quite fresh, Eric Singer commanding the time, Paul Stanley , Gene Simmons and Tommy Thayer up front and effects front and centre. Paul definitely can’t sing like he used to, but this is not a problem for the crowd, he is owning the space, and the KISS Army are in total worship mode. Paul actually had a lot of support from the other band members in the vocal department, but to be fair, he carried the band vocally for most of its career. In some ways it was a little sad to hear him struggling for most of the set, but what is the alternative? The band don’t tour at all. It is so good to see him, he looks great, he still has all of the rock star presence, and so many of these songs are his.

The opening track finishes off with a bang and then we are straight into ‘Shout it out Loud’ . The band just move into track after track and we get to hear classics like ‘Deuce’ then ‘War Machine,’ and ‘Heaven’s on Fire’ among any mothers. The Paul Stanley “ Starchild ” banter and rhetoric is solid, consistent, and generally not needed, just as you would expect. But he has the crowd eating out of his hands, so what do I know! He was fantastic tonight, he is the ultimate showman, age aside, he still has it. Look, there were no real surprises tonight, and we knew there wouldn’t be. The lads had come to deliver their ultimate show, and they did. Gene ascended the rigging to sing ‘God of Thunder,’ he breathed fire at the end of ‘I Love It Loud , ’ he spat blood, and his tongue was ever-present. Vocally, he is singing really well and sounded great tonight. I really enjoyed his singing the entire set. And as I said earlier, he really supported Paul vocally, Gene worked hard tonight.

Tommy Thayer (who we caught up prior to the tour commencing – revisit here ) was really impressive; he really is a great guitarist. I know he has copped his fair share of flack filling Ace Frehley’s shoes and costume, but he was excellent. He was tight, reliable, great to watch, and just so important to the sound. Of course, he played a long solo, it was during ‘Cold Gin , ’ and he shot pyro out of his guitar and destroyed some of the lighting rigs, and he did all of this like a pro. I am a die-hard Ace fan, but Tommy has done a great job in this band, and he deserves full credit. Paul and Tommy did a little guitar duel/piece during ‘Dr Love’ and it really wasn’t needed, to be honest, definitely not a highlight. I don’t think KISS have ever done things like this well. It did give Paul’s voice a rest, but it just didn’t fit in my opinion.

Eric Singer as always was amazing. He is truly one of my favourite hard rock drummers and was so even before he joined KISS . The only concern with Eric tonight wasn’t him, it was the fact that he got very little camera time on the big screen and I felt that the lights around his kit were too dark and you really couldn’t see him very well. I remember the first time I saw him with the band, in the early 2000s and he was amazing. He gave the band their edge again and was flawless behind the kit. I really don’t have a highlight for him this evening behind the kit as he was so consistent and tight the whole set through. However, vocally he really stood out. His vocals on ‘Black Diamond , ’ and in particular ‘Beth’ were amazing. He honestly sings ‘Beth’ so much better than Peter Criss . I also need to mention his backing vocals, they were really strong also.

I do have to make a special mention of ‘ Love Gun ’; it is one of my all-time favourite KISS tracks and it was brilliant tonight. Paul flew out to his stage in the middle of the arena, he actually sang it quite well, and the band killed it! This was really played well, and no KISS Army member could be disappointed with their rendition of this tonight.

As the set concluded the band brought out an absolute arsenal of pyro and lights for ‘Black Diamond , ’ it was actually quite breathtaking. For encore, the boys did renditions of ‘Beth , ’ ‘Shandi’ (which was really, really good, even though it isn’t one of my favourite KISS tracks)’ and obviously ‘Rock N Roll All Night , ’ which was accompanied by giant KISS balloons, confetti, streamers, pyro, lasers, lights, smoke and streams of fire. Whether you are a KISS fan or not, you can’t help but be impressed by the show tonight, in its entirety. The KISS Army, the curious on-looker, the partner dragged along with the KISS fan, and the uninitiated child would not have walked away disappointed. If this is the last KISS show ever in Sydney, they definitely left a lasting memory for all present. But I am still not convinced, even after all of this, that this will be the last KISS tour of Australia… Time will tell!
