RCA Placeholder Best Small Cities

Good things come in small packages, and nowhere is that more evident than in these 10 dynamic, reader-favorite cities. Whether you're on the lookout for a cutting-edge arts scene, inventive new restaurants, or eye-catching architecture, you're bound to find the next big new thing in travel.

An overview of Sedona.

Stunning Sedona is a must for the traveler seeking photos-won’t-do-it-justice wilderness. By day, explore its distinct red-rock monoliths, pine forests, and canyons for extraordinary views, or head into town to check out the art galleries. On clear nights, take the sky’s mind-boggling stretch of stars and stay in adobe cottages at the Enchantment Resort , a former private ranch turned luxury resort and spa. As an added bonus, Sedona is about a two-hour drive from the Grand Canyon—casual day trip to the country’s most spectacular natural wonder, anyone?

Picking crabs at the Annapolis Rotary Club's annual crab feast

9. Annapolis

Everyone’s a sailor in picturesque Annapolis, a charming town with brick-lined streets and structures that date back centuries—and, of course, the US Naval Academy. Even if you aren’t a fresh-faced recruit in bright whites, you can still tour the academy’s excellent museum and model gallery or simply take a leisurely stroll through its Beaux Arts campus. Given its location on the Chesapeake Bay , it should come as no surprise that Annapolis is a wonderland for seafood lovers as well—a visit to O’Learys Seafood Restaurant for crab cakes is an essential part of any visit.

A view of a beach.

8. Pensacola

Florida certainly has no shortage of beautiful beaches, but few places have the blindingly white sand and Caribbean-blue waters you’ll find in and around this town. Head to the nearby barrier islands for the best (and least crowded) stretches of sand: Pensacola Beach on Santa Rosa Island is often cited as the crown jewel of the Gulf Islands National Seashore, complete with dolphin-rich waters and sand so soft you’d swear you were walking on baby powder. Back on the mainland, spend an afternoon walking through the Chappie James Museum—a must-visit site that honors Daniel “Chappie” James Jr., a Tuskegee Airman who became the first African American to become a four-star general in any branch of the military.

A look at a bay.

7. St. Augustine

History lovers often flock to Savannah and Charleston to marvel at old buildings and ancient trees, but those cities are practically babies compared to St. Augustine. Founded in 1565, this Spanish-influenced city shines with its colonial architecture and old brick streets—not to mention historic treasures like Flagler College and the imposing Castillo de San Marcos—but the drinking and dining scenes here are totally modern. Be sure to grab some sunset cocktails at The Reef (preferably after surfing at Vilano Beach.)

After a pandemic that found many of us escaping to the great outdoors, readers continue to be drawn to Aspen. It’s home to some of the best ski slopes in the US—and some of the best resorts, too. The Little Nell is a popular choice for ski-in-ski-out; you can also stay at The St. Regis Aspen Resort , only a three-minute walk from the base of Aspen Mountain. If you’re more about the “après” than the “ski,” head to Meat and Cheese for the best charcuterie in town, or make a reservation at Matsuhisa Aspen , where chef Nobu Matsuhisa fuses Japanese cuisine and Peruvian ingredients. And if you've discounted the city as a summer destination, don’t: there's plenty to do here when it warms up, like hiking the Grottos Trail just east of town, or checking out the revolving contemporary art collection at the Aspen Art Museum .

5. Savannah, Georgia

Mossy, moody Savannah has no shortage of 'grammable views. Start with a walk along its cobblestoned historic district past horse-drawn carriages and ornate architecture, or find shade under live oak trees drooping with Spanish moss. Book in advance to nab a room at the Gastonian , a historic bed and breakfast just two blocks from 30-acre Forsyth Park . And for a fantastic dining experience, go to The Grey , an elegantly reborn former Greyhound Bus depot, where James Beard Award–winning chef Mashama Bailey serves elevated takes on Southern classics, like foie gras and grits and tempura-fried catfish.

4. Greenville, South Carolina

Want to get in on a secret? Plan a trip to Greenville now and you might see it just on the cusp of stardom. The food lover’s town has a farm-to-table scene that continues to rise in the ranks (try Jianna for Italian and freshly shucked oysters, and Vault & Vator, the city's first speakeasy, for a strong, well-crafted cocktail), and its craft beer scene is seeing a similar explosion. Paired with its dynamic urban spaces are abundant natural resources, including 32-acre Falls Park, which runs through the middle of town, and the Swamp Rabbit bike trail—now at a whopping 22 miles and counting.

Alexandria VA

3. Alexandria, Virginia

Washingtonians are all in on the secret, but it’s no surprise the rest of the world is catching up: Alexandria, Virginia, the charming, historic city just across the Potomac River from our nation's capital , draws travelers and would-be residents alike. Most folks start to imagine moving there immediately after setting foot in Old Town, once they’ve strolled the red-brick sidewalks, clocking street after street of perfectly preserved rowhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries. When you visit, scope out King Street, packed with boutiques, restaurants, and specialty shops; then land at the waterfront, where you can watch the boats bobbing on the water before touring the Torpedo Factory Art Center, a collective of galleries and artists’ studios. End the day at Gadsby’s Tavern, where some of our founding fathers used to drink—don’t mind the actors in colonial garb.

2. Santa Fe

Santa Fe acts as both New Mexico’s political and creative capital: Wander its wide streets, flanked by adobe houses, and you’ll begin to see why artists like Georgia O'Keeffe were so inspired by this eclectic, historic town. ( Traveler readers also can't stay away—Santa Fe has long been a regular on this list.) The city’s many art institutions, 250-plus galleries (notably SITE Santa Fe, in the Railyard, an emerging contemporary arts hub), and Spanish colonial churches keep culture fiends busy. If the fantastical is more your thing, Meow Wolf’s House of Eternal Return is an explorable art experience with more than 70 rooms of immersive art. To recharge after an active day of museum-hopping, we recommend ordering 505 Manhattans at Radish & Rye, whose 75 bourbons and whiskeys are an antidote to tequila overload.

1. Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston may be a small town, but this city punches well above its weight. When you consider everything it has to offer—history, culture, food, charm—it’s no wonder the so-called Holy City has repeatedly topped our list of the best small cities in the US. While its robust F&B scene , which includes a steady annual circuit of nationally recognized food and culture festivals, continues to be a draw, visitors are rarely prepared for the city's good looks. Stately homes, cobblestone streets, waterfront views, and an abundance of flowering window boxes only add to its welcoming vibe. Find a seat among its many outdoor terraces for a drink and some fresh oysters (we recommend hitting the Ordinary ), and try to resist the urge to up and move here.

RCA Placeholder Best Big Cities

Sure, you’ll find some familiar names on this list of the best big cities in the US, but go beyond what you might expect and you’ll find some surprising gems that are always a good idea for a reason.

Miami Beach and hotels.

With an abundance of dreamy beaches, Art Deco architecture, and incredible Cuban food, Miami was once again voted one of the best cities in the US this year. And while some of its beloved clichés (think expensive cars and neon bikinis) can still be found, the Magic City is so much more than a party destination. Art lovers are spoiled for choice when it comes to museums ( Pérez Art Museum Miami is a stand-out), while travelers seeking chic cafes and vinyl shops will feel right at home in the Wynwood Arts District .

Image may contain Plant Flower Blossom and Tulip

9. Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C. may have finally shed its buttoned-up reputation. Yes, we're still riding the high from the 2016 opening of the National Museum of African-American History and Culture , designed by world-renowned British-Ghanian architect David Adjaye. But then came the smartly revitalized Wharf, with its can't-miss waterfront views, and the arrival of hotel Eaton , which prioritizes activism instead of pillow mints—not to mention the city’s stylish Airbnbs. Suddenly, we can't seem to get enough of the place. Something's brewing in D.C., and it's not just the craft beer.

Country Music bars on Broadway Nashville

8. Nashville

A southern city with a small-town feel, you might find that a weekend isn’t enough to get all you can out of Nashville . Music City is known for its legendary honky tonks on Lower Broadway, but be sure to take time away from the buzz of the strip to explore the city’s shops and restaurants . You’ve likely heard of Prince’s Hot Chicken Shack , but also stop into Hatch Show Print , which has been creating show posters for Nashville’s biggest venues for more than 140 years, to check out their vintage letterpress machinery and take home a piece of Nashville history.

7. New York City

New York City buzzes as though perpetually caffeinated (and most of its residents probably are)—packed with people moving, creating, and making the most of every block. After a requisite visit to a few world-class museums (you can never take enough trips to the Met or the Guggenheim ), make like a local by tucking into soup dumplings in Chinatown , pizza in Greenwich Village, and steak frites in Soho, and walking it all off on the High Line ; or picnic in Bryant Park. Of course, there are four boroughs beyond Manhattan, and they deserve love, too; stroll over the Brooklyn Bridge for a drink at 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge , or venture out to Long Island City for a day at MoMa PS1 . In this town for all seasons, there's no wrong itinerary.

For one of the oldest cities in the US, Boston sure has aged with style. To get a quick refresher on our nation’s history, walk the Freedom Trail , a 2.5-mile route along a string of historic sites that takes you through the country’s founding. Other activities worth adding to your itinerary include slurping up oysters at Neptune , visiting the eclectic salon-style art display at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum , and catching a ball game at Fenway Park . Just be sure to learn the words to “Sweet Caroline” before you go.

5. San Francisco

While San Francisco is on the small side for a major city, at just 49 square miles, it packs a punch. Yes, there’s Alcatraz and the famed Golden Gate Bridge , but you could also spend a whole day wandering through the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art or discovering street art in the character-filled Mission District. Treat yourself to some pampering at one of the city’s fantastic spas , or head north and take in the majesty of the redwoods in Muir Woods . Add in some of the best restaurants and bars in the world and a hotel scene that truly has something for everyone, and you’ll likely find that one visit to the city by the bay just isn’t enough.

4. New Orleans

It's easy to experience New Orleans through its most popular attractions: Mardi Gras and Bourbon Street, Cafe du Monde (which is great, don't get us wrong), and Preservation Hall jazz (also fantastic). But there's so much more to this soulful city. Its Creole, Cajun, and French roots inform everything from the music on Frenchman Street to the food and cocktails in the French Quarter over to the Bywater. It's also worth exploring the revitalized Warehouse District, home to the city's Ace Hotel , where you could easily stumble on half a dozen excellent galleries all within a few blocks' radius, or spend a whole day in contemplation at the National WWII Museum .

Overlooking Milwaukee Skyline

3. Milwaukee

So much more than just a day trip from Chicago , Milwaukee has many (if not all) of the same qualities that make other cities on this list buzz—and then some. Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, the city’s surprisingly eco-diverse location makes it a hotbed of locavore cuisine. A spate of award-winning restaurants have helped Milwaukee shed its beer-and-cheer reputation, though you can still get your fill of both between fine dinners. The dedicated revitalization of neighborhoods such as the historic Third Ward and Lincoln Village has also kept visitors busy with specialty shops, galleries, and more creative businesses.

2. San Diego

Several years ago, travelers headed to San Diego might have wondered what they would do in the city, besides hitting the beaches . No longer. With a recent string of hot hotel openings (like the Guild and the Carté) and a legit food scene that offers up some of the best Mexican dishes and seafood platters you'll ever taste, San Diego has officially stepped out from the shadow of its big sister to the north, earning world-class destination status that goes well beyond the waves. Come for the sunshine, sure; but stay for everything else.

1. Chicago, Illinois

It's no wonder Chicago is topping this list yet again. A world-class destination known for its impressive architecture, first-rate museums, brilliant chefs, and massive brewing scene, it’ll take several repeat visits to get through your list of must-dos. Most people start downtown—from the Magnificent Mile to the ritzy Gold Coast to funky Old Town—but there are 77 neighborhoods to explore, where you'll find cutting-edge restaurants , chilled-out corner bars , and, no matter where you go, some of the most pleasant people you'll find anywhere.

Travel + Leisure Readers’ 15 Favorite Cities in the United States of 2023

The best cities in the United States in our annual "World’s Best Awards" survey for 2023.

visit usa awards

How Voting Works

What readers loved, the full list.

While the return of international travel took center stage in 2022, by no means did U.S. destinations fall to the wayside. T+L readers were equally drawn to the buzz and vibrancy of cities spanning from San Diego, California, to Alexandria, Virginia — no passport required. While warm-weather hot spots throughout the South were ranked most popular, voters also headed up to the Northeast and the Midwest.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Nearly 165,000 T+L readers completed the 2023 survey, an increase of nearly 25 percent over pre-pandemic voting levels. A total of more than 685,000 votes were cast across over 8,500 unique properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).

Cities were specifically rated on the criteria below:

  • Sights/landmarks
  • Friendliness

For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

Mariah Tyler/Travel + Leisure

Readers’ favorite cities ran the gamut this year, from destinations filled with old-fashioned charm to modern, bustling metros. One thing that remained constant from last year was readers’ love for Charleston, South Carolina, which ranked No. 1 yet again. Santa Fe, Savannah, New York City, and Boston also returned to the list. From coast to coast, the cities that made the list this year captured a variety of cultures and cuisines — and proved that travelers may not need their passports to see a new and exciting place.

1. Charleston, South Carolina

Lindsey Harris Shorter

Once again named T+L readers’ absolute favorite U.S. city, Charleston, also known as the Holy City, has the perfect combination of southern charm and city vibes. “This place is a destination to behold,” gushed one reader. Others praised the friendly locals, historic sites, and the shopping and dining along King Street. “So many incredible restaurants” have made Charleston a foodie destination, and "the mix of hotels makes the city a perfect fit for any type of traveler."

Reader Score: 88.63

This place is a destination to behold.

2. Santa Fe, New Mexico

Tetra Images/Getty Images

Santa Fe captured readers' hearts as a favorite destination thanks to its eclectic nature and its mass appeal. "Santa Fe has something to offer for everyone, great food, culture, outdoor activities including skiing and world class hiking... architecture is wonderful," one reader raved. The city’s top-notch arts scene has long been a magnet for both creators and culture mavens, the latter drawn to the galleries along Canyon Road and in the Railyard District. Downtown, readers will find the engrossing New Mexico Museum of Art as well as the eponymous museum of renowned painter Georgia O’Keeffe, who spent her final years in Santa Fe.

Reader Score: 88.47

3. New Orleans, Louisiana

Mariah Tyler/Travel+Leisure

Whether or not it's Mardi Gras season, a visit to New Orleans is a guaranteed good time. This city brimming with history keeps its musical traditions alive with jazz clubs like Fritzel’s and Preservation Hall and “street performers that will knock your socks off.” It also “may be the best food city in the world,” according to one reader, with its famous Creole cuisine now sharing the stage with delicious Haitian, Israeli, and Vietnamese fare. Not to mention, there's no better way to step — or float — back in time than with a steamboat ride on the Mississippi River.

Reader Score: 86.10

4. Savannah, Georgia

Hal Bergman/Getty Images

Savannah makes “southern charm” feel like an understatement. Its streets are lined with balconied Italianate and Federal-style houses; its small parks, or squares, are filled with live oaks covered in Spanish moss. While a stop at beloved ice cream parlor Leopold's is a must, there are also plenty of museums and “haunted” houses to tour. And for those looking for a beach escape, Hilton Head Island is just an hour’s drive away.

Reader Score: 85.96

5. Chicago, Illinois

Getty Images

“Honestly, who doesn’t like Chicago?” one reader rightly asks. The Windy City remains a voter favorite thanks to its world-class art galleries and museums, dynamic performing arts scenes, Magnificent Mile shopping, and phenomenal culinary offerings. Visitors can admire the city’s famous skyline from any number of rooftop restaurants and bars, but nothing beats taking it all in from the “outstanding” architecture cruise along the Chicago River."

Reader Score: 83.45

6. Honolulu, Hawaii

Laura la Monaca/Travel + Leisure

A tropical climate, rich culture, and eclectic food scene entice travelers to Hawaii's capital all year round. Naturally, the sand and surf are still the main draws. Said one reader: “It doesn’t get better” than a “walk on Waikiki Beach at sunset.” Several others, however, raved about the city’s “tantalizing cuisine” – found at trailblazing restaurants like the farm-to-table Merriman’s and the Pacific Rim-inspired MW. And there’s no shortage of cultural offerings, from museums and historic sites like Iolani Palace to the cutting-edge galleries and street murals of the Kaka’ako neighborhood.

Reader Score: 83.40

7. New York, New York

Gary Hershorn/Getty Images

New York is “an adventure waiting to happen,” with a countless variety of activities — from catching a Broadway show or a concert at Forest Hills to rowing a boat in Central Park or strolling the famous boardwalk at Coney Island. “The best nightlife, the best food, the best architecture, the best museums, the best shopping, and the best people watching,” raved one reader. And the subway and ferries make the Big Apple one of the easiest cities to navigate.

Reader Score: 83.36

8. Nashville, Tennessee

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

The music scene in Nashville — home to the Grand Ole Opry and the Country Music Hall of Fame — is rivaled only by the city’s culinary scene. (It is the home of hot chicken, after all.) This bustling city is also known as the "Athens of the South," where you'll find several top-tier universities as well as a full-scale replica of the Parthenon in Centennial Park.

Reader Score: 82.89

9. Alexandria, Virginia

Nicholas Schmidt/Travel + Leisure

Just across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., Alexandria offers the charm of a small town alongside the buzz of the nation’s capital. In this “living museum,” as one reader called it, you’ll find red-brick sidewalks, 18th and 19th-century homes and taverns, and the country’s oldest continuously operating farmers market. Family-friendly ghost tours let visitors travel back to the past, but trendy boutiques, luxury hotels, and vibrant nightlife keep the Port City very much in the present.

Reader Score: 82.71

10. San Antonio, Texas

San Antonio’s colorful, picturesque architecture is a nod to its past, while contemporary hotels and restaurants keep the south Texas city looking toward the future. A hotspot for history buffs, foodies, and families, a perfect day in San Antonio includes an afternoon stroll along the Museum Reach, a 3.5-mile-long park on both banks of the San Antonio River that’s filled with walking paths and public art installations.

Reader Score: 82.57

11. Williamsburg, Virginia

Sean Pavone/Getty Images

Steeped in history, Williamsburg "offers such an insight into the past" said one reader, while another noted "there is a lot to see and do with Jamestown and Yorktown nearby as well." While Colonial Williamsburg brings history classes to life, the modern part of the city boasts hiking, camping, and great restaurants.

Reader Score: 81.43

12. Bend, Oregon

MRA/Getty Images

According to one reader, Bend, Oregon "has a very great small town atmosphere without necessarily being 'small town.'” Just a 30-minute drive east of Mt. Bachelor, the city is the perfect base from which to spend the day on the slopes and the evening at a brewery or at the Podski , an array of food trucks in the Old Town district that serve everything from Mexican to Thai to charcuterie.

Reader Score: 81.38

13. San Diego, California

A world-class city with chill, west-coast vibes, this southern California destination won over readers with its “beautiful architecture, friendly people, and amazing climate.” San Diego’s diverse neighborhoods have something for everyone – whether it’s strolling through Balboa Park (which feels like walking around Spain), dining out in the Gaslamp Quarter, hitting the beach in La Jolla, soaking up history in Old Town, or taking the kids to SeaWorld in Mission Bay. And of course, you can't leave America's Finest City without hitting at least one of its famous taco shops.

Reader Score: 81.31

14. Boston, Massachusetts

Brian Rice/Getty Images

History buffs can find their happy place in this northeastern city. “Boston is one of those cities that has a LOT of history. From the Freedom Trail to the renowned museums, the city has so much to explore,” one T+L reader wrote. Whether it’s through the Little Italy of the North End,  around the majestically landscaped Back Bay Fens, or along the emerging South Boston waterfront, the city can be explored in a relatively short amount of time, but no need to rush with all of the delectable food stops it has in store.

Reader Score: 81.23

15. Asheville, North Carolina

Jeremy Poland/Getty Images

Readers raved about The Biltmore, a Vanderbilt mansion and estate that boasts stunning French Renaissance architecture and history. “Incredible!!” one reader wrote of the property, which also has overnight accommodations, a spa, and a winery. Of the city itself, another reader noted that its downtown is “fun and a bit funky,” and mentioned that they “loved” its art museum and restaurant scene. And there’s plenty of nature to enjoy along the hiking trails near the Blue Ridge Parkway or among the blooms and bonsai at the North Carolina Arboretum.

Reader Score: 81.02

Fermilab

Ana Martina Botti receives 2024 URA Honorary Tollestrup Award for Postdoctoral Research

September 12, 2024 | Emily Driehaus

Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory spend a lot of time thinking about one of the most difficult cosmological puzzles: how to find dark matter. Multiple experiments at the laboratory are focused on detecting elusive dark matter particles, each with different methods and detectors. However, regardless of the type of detector, they must be incredibly sensitive to potential dark matter particles with little to no outside interference, or background noise.

visit usa awards

Ana Martina Botti

Ana Martina Botti, winner of this year’s Universities Research Association’s Honorary Tollestrup Award for Postdoctoral Research, has helped the SENSEI collaboration and the OSCURA collaboration increase the sensitivities of their detectors during her time as a post-doctoral researcher at Fermilab. Botti’s work on these detectors, known as skipper charged-couple devices, has helped to advance both experiments, which are aimed to unlock the mysteries of dark matter.

“URA is proud to recognize Dr Botti’s work that illustrates how exacting requirements of Dark Matter searches drive technological innovation,” said URA president and CEO, John Mester.

SENSEI is a detector intended for measuring interactions from light dark matter using a skipper CCD , which is typically a silicon die with square pixels. Scientists use these devices to see how a photon, or a dark matter particle, interacts with the electrons in the detector. When these particles create ionization electrons, the electrons are moved through the pixels with electric voltages in the sensor, where researchers can determine when a particle hit the detector. In skipper CCDs, these readout charges can be read multiple times and averaged, which filters out noise that may have entered the measurement.

Even though these devices are extremely precise, some background noise can still make its way into the detector. Environmental radiation, trapped electrons and dark current can all get in the way of accurate measurements, reducing the sensitivity of the detector.

Botti’s work on reducing the interference of these backgrounds has greatly increased the sensitivity of skipper-CCD detectors for dark matter searches, holding interference from dark current to a relatively rare occurrence where only one extra background electron is expected to show up in a pixel over the span of 200 years. This unprecedented sensitivity will also help efforts to scale up SENSEI for the Observatory of Skipper CCDs Unveiling Recoiling Atoms collaboration. OSCURA detectors will have 10 kilograms of active mass to make even more advances in the search for dark matter.

Having always been fascinated with unanswered questions about science and the universe, Botti studied physics as both an undergraduate at Buenos Aires University and graduate student before obtaining a Ph.D. in astrophysics from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.

“From my point of view, physics was the field that gave you the most possibilities,” Botti said. “And I wanted to keep my doors as open as possible.”

Botti contributed to research at Pierre Auger Observatory while obtaining her Ph.D. and discovered a love for building detectors and instrumentation for experiments. After finishing up her work at the observatory, moving into building detectors for one of cosmology’s biggest mysteries seemed like a no-brainer.

“I think that dark matter is all about instrumentation. The main challenge of solving one of the biggest puzzles in cosmology is who makes the best instrument,” Botti said. “So, I saw the opportunity to use my skills to make a contribution that has an impact.”

The work has not been without obstacles. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March 2020, Botti was preparing to start postdoctoral work at Fermilab. However, the borders closed just a few days before she was scheduled to leave for the United States and plans were put on hold. Botti said the interruption allowed her to spend more time with family while working in a temporary position at the University of Buenos Aires.

“I was very lucky that I had the chance to spend most of the COVID pandemic at home close to my family and still work, which was great,” Botti said.

While Botti has contributed to achieving previously unthinkable levels of sensitivity for the SENSEI detector, the work is still ongoing. OSCURA will be a multikilogram detector, requiring careful, precise work to scale up from the 100-gram SENSEI detectors.

“I lead a lot of efforts in OSCURA to make a low-background package that allows us to scale up in mass,” Botti said. “This is opening the door to make OSCURA possible.”

Even though the work is intense, Botti thoroughly enjoys participating in this collaboration in such a fast-moving field. She appreciates the benefits of working with a smaller group of scientists with so much expertise.

“It’s very visible how each person contributes to the experiment,” Botti said. “I see the impact of my work much more clearly, and I see the impact of my colleagues’ work much more clearly.”

Botti’s dedication and the dedication of colleagues is evident in the results that have been achieved in such a short amount of time. With these ongoing efforts, it’s possible we are getting closer to measuring dark matter.

“I am always impressed with the work here at Fermilab from the CCD group and how fast they are developing this tool,” Botti said. “I’m always impressed with how fast and how well this is working, and I’m super happy to be part of it.”

Botti said she is very thankful for the technical staffs at Fermilab, Argonne and SNOLAB, as well as the collaborators in SENSEI and OSCURA, for aiding in the pursuit of this research.

Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory is supported by the Office of Science of the U.S. Department of Energy. The Office of Science is the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States and is working to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time. The top 19 best places to visit in the USA in 2024

visit usa awards

New York City never gets old, not with so many exciting and dynamic neighborhoods to explore © LeoPatrizi / Getty

The best thing about visiting the USA can be summed up in one word: variety.

This expansive country contains an incredible number of travel experiences that would take a lifetime to complete, from wandering through the redwoods to breathing in deep gulps of sea air on glimmering beaches to immersing yourself in the underground art scenes of some of the world's most famous cities.

Whether you're a nature lover looking for wide open spaces and snow-covered peaks or a culture fiend who can't get enough of museums and galleries, the United States has something for you.

Overwhelmed? Here are 19 inspiring places to visit in the USA in 2024.

1. New York, New York

Best place for art and architecture

A city that looms large in American lore, New York continues to live up to its hype. A global center for art, fashion, finance, music and food, the Big Apple will never leave you feeling bored. Sip sunset cocktails on luxurious rooftops, mosh at local punk shows, marvel at world-class art in famous museums, or indulge in the best food you've ever had at a hole-in-the-wall favorite.

Planning tip: New York has so much to offer, but resist the urge to see it all on your first trip. Break things down by neighborhood or borough , or perhaps even by interest.

2. San Francisco, CA

Best for counter-culture

San Francisco contains multitudes, offering an urban travel experience with a distinctly West Coast flavor: take in breathtaking bay views at Golden Gate Park , wander the alleyways of the country's largest and oldest Chinese neighborhood , pay homage to LGBTIQ+ heroes in the Castro, or dive into cutting-edge art at SFMOMA and a plethora of local galleries.

Sure it’s touristy, but it’s iconic — and so much fun. That’s why no visit to San Francisco would be complete without a ride on a cable car and a stop at Fisherman’s Wharf . Take a boat tour for a great view of the Golden Gate Bridge . Then walk along the waterfront and join the crowds watching the hundreds of seals sunning themselves on the pier, watch the street performers and order fresh seafood at one of the many restaurants on the water.

Planning Tip : San Francisco can be chilly when the fog rolls in. Always take along a sweater even in the summer.

3. National Mall in Washington, DC

Best for national history

Washington DC's National Mall represents the center of American political life and distills its cultural history into a two-mile strip of iconic monuments and the country's most famous museums. The mall contains ten Smithsonian museums – the National Museum of Natural History , the National Museum of African American History and Culture and the National Museum of American History, among others – plus landmarks including the National Gallery of Art, the Lincoln Memorial and the Capitol building.

4. New England

Best for forest drives and exploring charming centuries-old towns

Want to meander on mountain roads beneath brilliant forest canopies and savor tasty lobster and coastal views all in the same trip? New England is the place to be. Explore the quaint villages and cranberry bogs of Cape Cod , snuggle into a cabin in the mountains of Vermont , or dive into all the seafood you can eat in Portland, Maine . And if you visit in autumn, prepare yourself for some of the most spectacular fall foliage in the country.

5. Pacific Coast Highway

Best for West Coast exploration

The Pacific Coast Highway – technically three highways linked together – connects sunny San Diego with moody Seattle , delivering epic West Coast experiences along the 1600-mile journey. Stay at kitschy motels in coastal towns, admire the cliffs of Big Sur , marvel at the tidepools in Oregon , and explore Washington's Olympic National Park .

And be sure to visit San Simeon, a small oceanfront town famous for two things:

The Piedras Blancas Rookery , located on the Pacific Ocean in San Simeon, is the only easily accessible, free and open to the public elephant seal rookery in the world. The shores and rocks are crowded with seals lounging in the sun and barking.

Just up the road is the ultimate in mansions, the astounding Hearst Castle, the former home of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. Take the tour and then visit the winery.

Planning tip : Sections of the Pacific Coast Highway run along sea cliffs prone to rockslides. Always check road conditions before setting off in case of any unexpected closures.

6. New Orleans, Louisiana

Best for foodies and art lovers

There's no place in the world like New Orleans  – we promise. A vibrant cocktail of Indigenous, Caribbean, African, French and Spanish influences, this city possesses a unique magic that keeps people coming back for more. Dive into its legendary Creole cuisine, revel in its lively festivals, and immerse yourself in a world-class music scene – this is the birthplace of jazz, after all.

Eat a beignet heaped with powdered sugar and drink a cup of chicory coffee at Cafe du Monde at the French Market on Decatur Street, overlooking Jackson Square and the St. Louis Cathedral. Take a tour of some of the historic mansions tucked away on side streets in the French Quarter.

Avid readers will want to visit the home of Frances Parkinson Keyes , who wrote the bestselling Dinner at Antoine’s. Then, try to get a reservation at the eponymous restaurant. It’s not easy, but it's worth it.

Be sure to go beyond the French Quarter, too, and take a bayou boat tour, explore the antique stores on Magazine Street or golf in Audubon Park .

Planning tip: New Orleans's coastal location makes it susceptible to hurricanes from June through October, with the most active months being August and September.

7. Santa Fe, New Mexico

Best for Indigenous history and culture

Nicknamed the "City Different," Santa Fe is rooted in American history while still keeping up with the times. A cultural melange of Indigenous, Spanish and Mexican influences, this city is home to numerous historical sites – like the 400-year-old Plaza – and a cutting-edge art culture that features a strong contingent of independent artists and the original Meow Wolf , a game-changing immersive art installation.

Local detour : Less than an hour's drive from Santa Fe, the Puyé Cliff Dwellings , carved into the rock face and atop the Santa Clara Canyon on Santa Clara Pueblo Reservation, were once home to 1500 Pueblo Indians. Abandoned in 1580, the one-hour tours are conducted by the descendants of the original dwellers.

8. Chicago, Illinois

Best metropolis for midwestern charm

Chicago contains all the hallmarks of a great American city – excellent food, multicultural neighborhoods , and top-tier museums – with a distinctly midwestern twist. Spend your days lounging next to the ocean-like Lake Michigan, catch a Cubs game at Wrigley Field , or have an evening of laughs at Second City , the launchpad for greats like Stephen Colbert and Tina Fey.

Leave your car behind and explore Millennium Park, the lakefront and the museum campus by Segway . Board a boat for a narrated tour of the architectural wonders lining the Chicago River. From the boat docks, head north for a stroll along the Magnificent Mile , the stretch of Michigan Avenue lined with boutiques, art galleries, restaurants and the historic Water Tower , one of the few survivors of the Chicago Fire.

Planning tip : Finding a parking spot in Chicago can be both exasperating and expensive. Download one of the free parking apps on your phone and you can usually find a spot close to where you’re going at a significantly lower rate.

9. Rocky Mountains, Colorado

Best for big peaks and winter sports

If you want to see the quintessential mountains of the American West, the Rockies in Colorado should be your first stop. Rocky Mountains National Park is a logical starting point, but in truth, there are so many different ways to access this dynamic mountain range – hit the slopes in ski hubs like Vail , Aspen and Telluride, drive the scenic byways of the San Juan range, or pitch camp in one of the state's numerous national forests.

Planning tip: Unless you're from somewhere with similar elevation, you might feel the effects of altitude throughout the Rockies; stay extremely hydrated, take your time on hikes, and skip the alcohol.

10. Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina and Virginia

Best for east coast mountains

While the Rockies tend to get a lot of press – for good reason – the USA's oldest mountain range is a must-see. The Blue Ridge Mountains make up the southern third of the Appalachian Mountain chain, and the lush forests wrapped around these rolling hills make for incredible blue-green vistas from the region's many ridges and balds. Dive into the numerous day hikes, road trips, and mountain biking excursions, cruise the Blue Ridge Parkway , or hike a section of the storied Appalachian Trail .

A scenic stop on the Blue Ridge Parkway , Asheville is a charming mountain town known for its thriving culinary and music scenes. The historic Downtown Art District, with its extensive Art Deco architecture, buzzes with open-air bars, restaurants serving regional cuisine and galleries filled with both local and regional artists.

Beyond its well-deserved reputation as “Beer City,” Asheville also has an extensive list of wineries and distilleries that offer tours. Outdoor attractions include mountain biking and hiking.

Just a few miles away, the renowned Biltmore Estate , known as America’s largest house, is a dynastic fantasy of gardens, architecture, art and opulence. Touring the 175,000-square-foot home is a step into the grandeur of the past and one of the many top things to do in Asheville .

Man kayaking at a mangrove forest in the Everglades

11. The Everglades, Florida

Best for wildlife watchers

The importance of the Everglades can't be overstated – this sprawling wetland is an International Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a national park, thanks to the diverse profusion of flora and fauna that live here. Paddle through the coastal estuaries and camp among mangroves, or whiz through the numerous waterways via airboat. All the while, keep your eyes peeled for wading birds, manatees, and of course, alligators and crocodiles.

Planning tip: For the best experience, come prepared for the elements: sunscreen and bug spray are essentials.

12. Southwestern Utah

Best for geology lovers

If you want to visit one place in the US that sums up the grandiosity of its natural history, southwestern Utah is the place to go. Home to five of the country's most spectacular national parks, Red Rock Country puts the region's geological past on display with a dazzling amount of artistic flair. Hike the peaks and valleys of Zion and Bryce Canyon , or marvel at the crimson, ochre and amber palette in the cliffs and canyons of Capitol Reef and Canyonlands . And if you want a special treat, watch the sun rise over the sandstone masterpieces at Arches .

Planning tip: Large swaths of this region are extremely remote and sometimes lack cell service, both on the road and on the trail. Always share your plans with others and bring plenty of water in case of emergencies.

13. Key West, Florida

Best for sunshine and seafood

A unique destination, Key West is all that you’ve heard and much more.

Catch the Nightly Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square , a perpetual street party of food, street performers and artists selling their wares. Stroll through the historic homes districts with their large, immaculately maintained mansions and be sure to visit the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum .

There’s no end of restaurants and bars to visit on Duval Street , but probably the most famous is Sloppy Joe’s , which opened in 1933. It’s a busy place featuring live music, good food and lots of photos of Hemingway, who used to sit at the bar in the afternoon.

Planning tip: Key West is a great walking city. To help navigate the island, download a map or stop by the city’s tourism office at 1300 White Street.

14. Charleston, South Carolina

Best for Southern charm

Live oaks dripping with Spanish moss, grand old mansions, cobblestone streets and charming neighborhoods make Charleston a must on any bucket list.

Start your day with breakfast at the Charleston City Market , which opened in 1807 and at which point Charleston was already 137 years old and a destination even then. Now, the city gets about 7 million visitors a year.

From carriage rides to sunset cruises, there are many ways to see the city . Take a bike tour, board a sailboat to see the city from Charleston Harbor, kayak or paddleboard through the bayous (keep an eye out for the dolphins), soar through the woods via zipline or drive the short distance to the string of beaches lining the shore.

Civil War buffs should visit Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historic Park, and stroll The Battery , a 1.2-mile former defensive structure overlooking the harbor with views of Fort Sumter.

Faced with the difficult decision of where to dine – Charleston’s options are overwhelming – consider the views of the harbor at Fleet Landing , a former U.S. Navy disembarkation station, or head to Hyman’s Seafood , one of the city’s oldest restaurants, opened in 1890.

Planning tip : The best time to visit Charleston is fall, when the humidity drops, and during the winter holiday season, as Charlestonians love to decorate.

15. Sedona, Arizona

Best for mountain beauty

The astounding and awe-inspiring red rock formations are just one reason to visit Sedona , with its perfect blend of cowboy culture and urban sophistication. An all-season destination , Sedona’s higher elevations attract visitors from Phoenix and places further south in the spring and summer. Fall is a blaze of color and with dusting of snow–or even more on the red rocks turns Sedona into a winter wonderland.

To experience Sedona’s natural beauty up close, take a hike at the intriguingly named Dead Horse Ranch State Ranch . Rather drive? Explore the backcountry by Jeep, ATV or Hummer. Get a bird’s eye view of Sedona from a hot air balloon.

In town, take the trolley for an overview of the town. Then hop off for some serious shopping. Stores that celebrate Western culture include True West Hats where they sell Western and custom-made hats. Clear Creek Trading Company curates Native American merchandise such as beaded bags, bolo ties, Hopi wicker baskets, artifacts like handmade deer jaw tomahawks, craft supplies and sheepskin rugs.

That Western spirit continues with sips of prickly pear margaritas at the Cowboy Club Grille & Spirits , a mainstay since opening in 1946. Away from the vibrancy of the bustling downtown but just a short distance away, dine at L'Auberge de Sedona on the banks of Oak Creek. The award-winning resort’s menu reflects French and European roots matched with local cuisine.

Planning tip : It gets cold in the mountains even on summer nights. Pack accordingly.

16. Detroit, Michigan

Best for experiencing an evolving urban landscape

Forget what you hear about this once-beleaguered city. Detroit is back, attracting 16.5 million people in 2023 and generating $9.2 million in tourist dollars. Get to know the new Detroit while celebrating the best of the old.  Here are a few reasons why.

A culinary destination with many James Beard-recognized restaurants, bakeries and chefs add to a creative buzz that also includes the Detroit Institute of Arts with its massive Diego Rivera mural. Greenspaces abound for outdoor gatherings and recreational activities from the gardens and dog park at the five-acre Grand Circus Park in the city’s entertainment district to the 982-acre Belle Isle . One of the endpoints of Detroit’s award-winning Detroit International RiverWalk , visitors can explore its many cultural institutions like the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, the Belle Isle Aquarium, and the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservancy.

The city’s culinary diversity reflects a wide range of ethnic cuisines and settings. The Whitney , a 19th-century mansion, is known for its gastronomy and ghosts (check out the Ghost Bar on the third floor) and gourmet food. Want less glorified but equally delicious fare? Take a seat at the Formica counter and order a chili dog at American Coney Island , family-owned since 1917. Board the Detroit Princess for a lunch or dinner river cruise.

Sports fans can take their pick from major league football, baseball, basketball, and hockey teams.

Planning tip : The Detroit People Mover is a great way to navigate the city and is currently piloting a fare-free policy for 2024.

17. Columbus, Ohio

Best for a big city with small-town charm

The fastest-growing city in the United States, Columbus is a powerhouse of arts, culture, museums, eclectic neighborhoods, and classic and cutting-edge restaurants.

Celebrate your inner German, no matter what your ethnicity or country of origin, in the German Village, with its cobblestone streets and immaculate 19th-century homes. Order the killer cream puff for dessert at Schmidt’s Sausage Haus & Restaurant , the oldest continuously operating business in the historic German Village. Not far away, the Book Loft of German Village features 28 rooms of books.

Hot Chicken Takeover, with six restaurants in Columbus, including in the wonderful North Market , is more than just a place for great Nashville-style hot chicken. It’s mission-driven to provide supportive jobs to men and women who need a fair chance at work despite their backgrounds and past problems.

Named one of the best beer cities in the US, many of the 30-plus breweries on the Columbus Ale Trail can be found in the city’s 27-acre Brewery District , sandwiched between the German Village and the Scioto River. The number of distilleries in Columbus has grown over the past few years. For tours and tastings follow the Columbus Distillery Trail , with its eight distilleries, for tours and tastings.

Take advantage of the city’s free cultural offerings. Admission to the Columbus Museum of Art , which has the world’s largest collection of works by famous local artists such as George Bellows and Elijah Pierce, is free on Sundays.  The stunning Beaux-Arts style main branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library has a series of free author events as well as classes and programs. Be sure to stroll through the Topiary Garden on the street behind the library’s rear entrance. The only topiary garden in the world based upon a work of art, its meticulously hewn yew trees are shaped into a larger-than-life recreation of Georges Seurat's "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte." The John F. Wolfe Columbus Commons , a six-acre park in the heart of the downtown, features free concerts, fitness classes, and other programs throughout the year. The annual Shakespeare in the Park is just one of the free performances put on by the Actors' Theatre of Columbus that take place in Schiller Park , the city’s second oldest park.

Planning ti p: Looking for a unique place to stay? Motels like South Wind , within easy walking distance of both the German Village and the Brewery District, once were found throughout the United States. Built in 1959, it’s among the few being reimagined with their classic looks maintained but with all the modern amenities guests expect from a boutique motel.

18. Louisville, Kentucky

Best for bourbon, food, and horses

If you’re looking for a road trip destination with lots of culinary options, bourbon, history and architecture, then head to Louisville .

Some suggestions for the best things to do in this river city?

Take a ride on the Ohio River aboard the Belle of Louisville , a National Historic Landmark and the only remaining authentic steamboat of its type.

Follow the Urban Bourbon Trail to such fab places as the Brown Hotel (where the famed Hot Brown sandwich originated) and the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience with its basement speakeasy. A tour of the Historic Old Louisville neighborhood is necessary for those who love 19th and early 20th-century architecture.

Enjoy cocktails and music at The Last Refuge , Bob Dylan’s new restaurant and event space set in a reimagined former church in Louisville’s trending NuLu neighborhood.

At Locust Grove Plantation, visitors learn about the histories of the enslaved people who toiled there. Meanwhile, the Muhammad Ali Center celebrates the boxing champ’s life and commitment to social justice.

Planning tip : The 21 C Museum Hotel in downtown Louisville features rotating art exhibits in its public rooms.

19. Indianapolis, Indiana

Best for a river city with a sophisticated vibe

Indianapolis is a city of surprises to those expecting a dull Midwestern destination. Visitors to the downtown can choose from a plethora of options. For museums, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is the world’s largest kids museum. The 152-acre Newfields features gardens, picnic grounds, Oldfields–the historic home of the Lilly family–and the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Visit the 267-acre White River State Park , where you can explore the Indianapolis Zoo, the Eiteljorg Museum of Western Art and gondola rides on the water. Catch the Indy 500 or take a golf cart tour at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway .

Or, explore Indy’s neighborhoods , including Massachusetts Avenue, known as Mass Ave , a five block long historic neighborhood of restaurants and shops anchored by the historic Athenaeum , a three-story German-style building from the 1800s. It’s an amazing one stop shop with a beer garden, coffee shop, Rathskeller for beer and brats and lots of events.

5 Things to Know About the Turkish Airlines Credit Card

As a company, Turkish Airlines has much to boast about: It flies to the most countries, 129, of any airline in the world. It’s surprising, then, that the Turkish Airlines credit card is a lackluster product. The card just launched in July 2024, so it’s possible it could be revamped with better features over time — but for now, most travelers will find more value in another airline or general travel credit card .

Here are five things to know about the Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles Premier Visa Signature, issued by First Electronic Bank.

» MORE: Best airline credit cards

1. It's seriously lacking in perks

Chase United Airlines Mileage Plus Credit Card

Despite its $99 annual fee, the Turkish Airlines card delivers very little in the way of travel perks. At that price point, one might expect benefits such as a free checked bag, a credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck , lounge access , early boarding or elevated status within Miles&Smiles , which is Turkish Airlines’ frequent flyer program .

The Turkish Airlines card offers exactly none of these.

If you’re willing to pay an annual fee, there are plenty of superior options to the Turkish Airlines card. Consider the value of the United℠ Explorer Card . The annual fee is $0 intro for the first year, then $95 . United Explorer cardholders get free checked bags for themselves and a companion, two lounge passes per year, trip insurance and 25% back on in-flight purchases.

2. The sign-up bonus can be valuable

New Turkish Airlines cardholders can get 40,000 miles after spending $3,000 within 90 days of opening an account. NerdWallet values Turkish Airlines miles at 1.1 cents each, so the sign-up bonus is worth about $440. However, it may be possible to get even more value out of each mile, especially for last-minute bookings.

Earning those 40,000 bonus miles would also elevate you into elite status within the Miles&Smiles loyalty program, the second-highest tier. But as noted earlier, simply having the Turkish Airlines card doesn’t automatically grant you status; you need to spend your way there. That’s not the case with other airline cards.

3. It earns rewards on flights, everyday spending

The card earns:

Unlimited 3x miles on Turkish Airlines flights and purchases.

Unlimited 2x miles on dining, groceries, entertainment and lodging.

Unlimited 1x miles on everything else.

Miles expire three years after they’re earned.

4. Redemption options include travel and travel add-ons

Miles earned with the Turkish Airlines card may be redeemed for the following:

Award tickets.

In-flight service.

Cabin upgrades.

Extra bags.

Goods from Shop&Miles, Turkish Airlines’ shopping portal.

Services from Turkish Airlines’ program partners.

Access to select airport lounges.

Because Turkish Airlines belongs to the Star Alliance , any miles earned with the credit card may be used to book flights on more than two-dozen airlines.

5. You don’t need the card to book award flights

Bilt World Elite Mastercard Credit Card

It’s possible you already have a card in your wallet that can help you book award flights on Turkish Airlines. Turkish Airlines is a transfer partner for Capital One Miles , Citi ThankYou Points and Bilt Rewards , so those credit card programs’ proprietary currencies can be converted into Turkish Airlines miles.

Say you’ve accrued 50,000 Bilt Rewards with the Bilt World Elite Mastercard® Credit Card . Bilt’s 1:1 transfer ratio means that those 50,000 Bilt Rewards can become 50,000 Turkish Airlines miles.

A general travel card like the Bilt card also gives cardholders more redemption flexibility than a co-branded airline card.
