Seeing that this is a shorter drive, you might want to explore places en route, such as Covington , Hard Labor Creek State Park or the city of Madison .

Athens is a charming Southern town that is home to the University of Georgia and is known for its excellent food and live music scenes. Pretty Watson Mill State Park is also a short drive from here.

On your way to Athens, consider a stop at Fort Yargo State Park , near Winder, with its 260-acre lake, which is great for fishing, swimming, and watersports.

Providence Canyon State Park

On your way to the state park, we recommend exploring Newnan and LaGrange , as well as visiting the National Civil War Naval Museum and National Infantry Museum in Columbus .

One of the most beautiful small towns in Georgia, Rome is where three rivers meet with a backdrop of pretty landscapes. The town also has a Victorian downtown and an ancient mound complex.

En route, you can also visit Gone With the Wind Museum in Marietta , Red Top Mountain State Park and Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville .

Milledgeville

Milledgeville was once the capital of Georgia and is known for its antebellum architecture and historic sites, including the Old Governor's Mansion and a picturesque downtown.

You can also visit Covington and Madison on your way to Milledgeville, and enjoy a picnic at the beautiful Hard Labor Creek State Park en route.

Callaway Gardens

Callaway Gardens features a trail that connects different parts of the gardens, including the world's largest man-made beach around Robin Lake and a butterfly center with over 1,000 butterflies.

This is a short drive, which is great for a day trip but seeing that Newnan and LaGrange lie near the route, you can choose to extend your trip to visit them.

With this in mind, I’ve curated the 24 best road trips from Atlanta, Georgia. I’ll guide you through nearby gems like Lake Lanier and the North Georgia Mountains, as well as vacations that involve a little more driving, like Charleston and New Orleans.

Whether you’re seeking stunning mountain views or coastal beaches, this article will help you plan an Atlanta road trip itinerary that’s ideal for you! I’ve listed the destinations in this post based on distance from Atlanta to make your choice easier.

3. Dahlonega, Georgia

In North Georgia, Dahlonega is ideal for a fall road trip from Atlanta. Famous for the first major American gold rush, explore the Consolidated Gold Mine and go gold panning. Wander historic streets, visit the Dahlonega Gold Museum, and savor the town’s recent wine renaissance.

Discover the perfect summer Atlanta road trip at Lake Oconee! Georgia Power created this reservoir during the construction of the Wallace Dam in 1979. Since then, it’s become popular for boating, jet skiing, wakeboarding, waterskiing, fishing, and other water activities.

Outdoor enthusiasts can find hiking and camping opportunities throughout the Oconee National Forest–easily accessible via I-20. Lake Oconee also has several golf communities with lakefront homes. Additionally, it’s home to The Ritz-Carlton Reynolds luxury resort, perfect for a romantic getaway. 

6. Callaway Gardens, Georgia

Distance from Atlanta: 80 miles (1 hour, 30 minutes)

Explore the beauty of Callaway Gardens , 6,500 acres of land just over an hour’s drive from Atlanta. Established in 1952 to protect a rare azalea species, it now features walking trails, golf courses, and an artificial beach. Of course, the main attraction is the world’s largest azalea garden.

This area is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, making it one of our favorite weekend road trips. Discover picturesque hikes like Raven Cliff Falls, Anna Ruby Falls, and Dukes Creek Falls. Then, explore Smithgall Woods and Unicoi State Parks for camping, zip-lining, kayaking, and paddleboarding.

Blue Ridge makes for a charming road trip from Atlanta, surrounded by the North Georgia mountains. Relax at Mercier Orchards, offering orchard walks, picnics, fishing, and delightful apple treats. Then, take a train ride through the countryside on the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway.

Explore popular hiking trails like Flat Creek Loop and Lake Blue Ridge Loop. For avid hikers, Blue Ridge is just an hour from the Appalachian Trail’s starting point. After a long day of hiking, don’t forget to drop by Grumpy Old Men Brewery to sample craft beer!

9. Brasstown Bald, Georgia

Brasstown Bald, the highest point in Georgia, sits 4,784 feet above sea level. It’s a top-rated destination on Georgia road trips because the summit offers unparalleled 360-degree views of the Chattahoochee National Forest. You can even see four different states on a clear day!

The trek to the summit is steep, so make sure to wear hiking shoes or boots with good traction. Although the hike to the top can be strenuous for some, the views make it 100% worth the effort. If you can, plan to go on a sunny, clear day where you can avoid fog obstructing your view!

10. Providence Canyon State Park, Georgia

Discover Georgia’s Little Grand Canyon at Providence Canyon State Park, just a 2-hour drive from Atlanta. Shaped by poor farming practices in the 1800s, the 16 canyons reach depths of 150 feet, offering breathtaking views from the Canyon Loop Trail or the Backcountry Trail.

Keep an eye out on your hike for the rare plumleaf azalea, which blooms in July and August in this region. Apart from the unique landscape, admission to the park is only $5, making it a budget-friendly option.

11. Chattanooga, Tennessee

There are so many fun road trips to take from Atlanta

We know COVID-19 (Coronavirus) is impacting RV travel plans right now. For a little inspiration we’ll continue to share stories from our favorite places so you can keep daydreaming about your next adventure.

Atlanta has so much to do, but sometimes you just want to get out of the city and explore what the surrounding areas have to offer! Or possibly, like us you’re an RV and can’t locate a decent campground within 50 miles.

With that in mind, we’ve put together a little road trip bucket list with mini itineraries for a variety of interest. Best of all, you won’t even need to be on the road that long: we’re talking three-hour drives, tops. These places are all perfect for a day trip from Atlanta or as a means of avoiding the Metro area altogether.

South of the City

Head down south from the city, and get your fill of small towns, beautiful gardens, a train, and maybe even an indoor water park.

Distance from Atlanta: 83 miles

Oh, Macon! Home of the Cherry Blossom Festival and all things PINK! Macon is home to a downtown area that’s got so much to do. Visit Amerson River Park and walk the paths while watching the kayakers paddle by on the Ocmulgee River. A visit to the Ocmulgee National Monument is a must-do, take a hike or bike the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail, or spend the day on Lake Tobesofkee.

North of the City

Head north for beautiful mountain hikes, waterfalls, awesome views, or to visit a Bavarian village.

Distance from Atlanta: 92 miles

Drive north to the town of Helen and you’ll feel like you’re in a completely different country—Germany to be exact. There are so many outdoor adventures to participate in while you’re visiting the Bavarian village of Helen. And they also have amazing restaurants, and the best little downtown shops too. Tubing the Chattahoochee in Helen is a great way to cool off from the Georgia heat. Try even more adventure with a ride on the new Georgia Mountain Coaster.

There is so much great hiking nearby, but a favorite is Anna Ruby Falls. You’ll find a paved trail to the viewing platforms that get you so close to the falls, and the picnic area along the river is the best place for lunch. Brasstown Bald

Head on up—and I mean UP—to the highest point in the state with a visit to Brasstown Bald in northeast Georgia . This favorite of ours is located near Blairsville, and you can take a shuttle or take the steep but short hike (.06 miles) to the observation tower. It’s paved and has a huge payoff at the end. At the tower, you can take in the 360 degree views atop the 4,784-foot bald—and maybe even see four states.

You can walk to it from downtown and it’s a great place to explore and spend the day. Speaking of the downtown area—it’s great with numerous restaurants and shops. Greenville is a just a really pedestrian-friendly city.

Great Smoky Mountain National Park

Distance from Atlanta: 162 miles

Take the 3-hour trip on up to the Cherokee, North Carolina entrance of Great Smoky Mountain National Park and you’ll spend your whole day happy. There is truly so much to see and do, you could make daily trips up there for a year and still find new things to explore.

Check out the Oconaluftee Visitor Center 2 miles north of Cherokee, and explore the Mountain Farm Museum to see what life was like in the mountains long ago. Hike one of the trails—you’ve got 800 miles of them to choose from. Take a driving tour of the park. Bike! Go fishing! Bring a picnic! Observe animals! There is so much to do.

Atlanta to Great Smoky Mountains Loop Road Trip

From big-city attractions to america's favorite national park and all the fascinating stops on the way..

Wind your way on this hilly and curvy road trip from Atlanta’s big-city attractions to America’s favorite national park, Great Smoky Mountains. On the way you’ll stop at sites that made history and have Instagram-worthy views. Plus, you can check another drive off your bucket-list before reaching Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg, Tenn., a great gateway to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. You can do this trip on a long weekend, but we recommend you spend at least a week to make the most of this adventure at a leisurely pace.

Start: Atlanta, Georgia

Start your Atlanta to Great Smoky Mountains Loop Road Trip in the “Big Peach,” Atlanta, Ga.

Atlanta is a city full of culture, history, music and a burgeoning foodie scene.

Jump on the Peachtree Trolley for a 90-minute trolley ride through the heart of the city. Designed to be reminiscent of Atlanta’s transportation in the early 20th century, you’ll feel like you’ve gone back in time – with the modern convenience of air conditioning of course.

Next up, visit the World of Coca Cola. Here, you’ll get a tour of a bottling plant, which is slowed down to give visitors a better look at the process. You’ll learn about Coke’s history and cultural impact and taste their products from all around the world, the classics and new products that are being tested at the Taste It! area. Overwhelmed by choices? Fan favorites include Fanta Pineapple from Greece and Guaraná Kuat, a Brazilian drink that tastes similar to ginger ale with a hint of berry.

Atlanta played a big role in the Civil Rights Movement and was home to activist Martin Luther King Jr. Give yourself at least two hours to visit the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Park. Tour the house where King was born and the Ebenezer Baptist Church where he served as a reverend and pay your respects at his grave. Make sure to stop by Freedom Hall to learn more about the Civil Rights Movement before you continue your journey.

You’ll need to fuel up before hitting the road and in Atlanta, there’s no shortage of good food. In the South, declaring you’ve found Atlanta’s best barbeque amounts to fighting words. We won’t tell you B’s Cracklin’ BBQ is the best, but the out-the-door line speaks for itself. Pitmaster Bryan Furman raises the heritage-breed hogs he roasts over split oak and pecan logs himself. Make sure to try the Carolina Mustard Style BBQ Sauce B’s is famous for. It’s a sweet and tangy blend of mustard and, of course, Georgia peaches.

If barbeque isn’t your thing, head to Buford Highway, an eight-mile stretch of road near the city center that’s packed with more than 20 international communities serving dishes from around the world in restaurants and markets. Or, you could head to the original Waffle House which is located just outside of Atlanta in Avondale Estates. Just remember, while it may be called Waffle House, ordering hash browns is the pro move. Make sure to check the menu so you’re ordering in the correct lingo. Author’s choice? Scattered, covered and smothered.

Murphy, North Carolina

Tucked into a verdant green valley between the Ocoee and Nantahala rivers, Murphy and Andrews, North Carolina are situated as the perfect basecamp to get outdoors. Locals like to say Cherokee County is where North Carolina starts and while it may be a slogan, it’s no less true. Situated on both the Tennessee and Georgia state lines, chances are you’ll pass through on your way to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Whether you’re looking to go whitewater kayaking, hike a section of the Appalachian Trail, or just want to check out some of North Carolina’s stunning waterfalls, Murphy and Andrews make a great place to stay.

Franklin, North Carolina

Don’t let the 4,233 population number fool you. The tiny town of Franklin , North Carolina and the surrounding region are chock full of hidden gems. Quite literally. In the mountains outside of town you’ll find 10 active, locally owned and operated gem mines where you can sift through buckets of dirt for rubies, sapphires and other precious gemstones.

Then, there are the waterfalls. Set aside an entire day to drive the 61-mile Mountain Waters Scenic Byway through Macon County and you’ll find plenty of them. The most popular stop along the way is Dry Falls where you can park at the top of the 75-foot-tall waterfall and peer down at it from an accessible overlook.

The world-famous Appalachian Trail runs through Franklin at mile 110 and each spring the town sees an influx of northbound thru-hikers on their way from Georgia to Maine. While the 2,190-mile trail is too much of an adventure for most of us, you can still get a taste of the AT on the 5-mile roundtrip hike to Siler Bald.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Lake Fontana Dam and Marina

If you haven’t fallen in love with the Appalachian Mountains yet, this stop will have you convinced. An hour west of the Oconaluftee Visitor Center, the Fontana Dam is part of the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area and is the tallest dam east of the Rockies. It creates Fontana Reservoir, with over 200 miles of shoreline and 10,000 acres of water to explore.

Start at the Visitor Center and join a ranger-led tour from the observation deck to learn more about the surrounding area.

If those stellar views have you eager to hit the trails, consider checking out one of the world’s most famous hikes: the Appalachian Trail. While this through-hike stretches from Georgia to Maine and takes months to complete, you can get a taste of what drives these hikers by venturing as far as you like on the trail and then heading back to the dam.

If you’d rather find some solitude, catch a pontoon boat shuttle at the Fontana Village Marina and explore Fontana Lake’s North Shore, which isn’t accessible by motorized vehicle. Miles of pristine trails await, as well as excellent fishing.

Back at the Marina, rent a pontoon boat, canoe, kayak or stand-up paddleboard and explore the water. The Fontana Village Resort, home to the Marina, also offers a variety of lodging and dining options.

Drive the Tail of the Dragon

You may want to opt for the rental car upgrade as this route includes a thrilling drive. The Tail of the Dragon on the Tennessee/North Carolina state line might just be the most exciting road you’ll ever drive. This adventure is not for the faint of heart. Eleven miles of tight curves, some with banked turns will leave you breathless. This road is a favorite of sports car enthusiasts and motorcyclists and has been featured on the British car show, Top Gear . Start at Cheoah Dam in Robbinsville, North Carolina and drive Hwy 129 north to Deals Gap Motorcycle Resort. Cheoah Dam is home to “Fugitive Bridge” which was featured in the 1993 movie The Fugitive starring Harrison Ford. Stop at Deals Gap to stretch your legs before beginning the true Tail of the Dragon, Hwy 129 north to Tabcat Creek Bridge. There are no intersecting roads or driveways on this stretch of the highway and no semi-trucks are allowed, making it a drive without exterior distractions so you can keep your eyes on the road. When you research the Pigeon River, you’d think it was designed with all levels of white-water rafter in mind. There are several rafting companies based in Gatlinburg that offer trips on the Pigeon.

When Atlanta locals want a quick getaway, they often look to north Georgia for respite. Driving to most of the small towns or state parks at the base of the Appalachian mountains will take two hours or less, and makes for a nice change of air. But you don’t even have to go that far to get away – there are lesser-known spots on the outskirts of Atlanta’s metro area that can still make you feel like you’re a world away.

If you’re looking for a day trip outside of the ATL, most of these cities will be easier to reach with a vehicle – one of the downsides of the Atlanta metro is its dependence on cars. But some of Atlanta’s commuter cities have enough to see and do to fill a day and then some, so the journey's always worth it. No matter the distance, here are 10 day trips from Atlanta that you can experience with a drive that’s two hours or less.

1. Get outdoors at the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Site 

Travel time: 25 minutes

Metro-Atlanta’s best kept secret for hiking is Arabia Mountain, a former granite rock quarry that’s now a National Heritage Site. Observe wildflowers breaking through cracks in the hard granite surface as you hike on a landscape that some say mimics the surface of the moon; the  Arabia Mountain National Heritage Site  also encompasses the metro area’s only monastery. The Monastery of the Holy Spirit is a community of monks who have lived off the land since 1944, even building their own church, and visitors are welcome to walk the property to enjoy quiet reflection. End your visit with a stop at the restaurants and small businesses in downtown Lithonia, where the buildings and sidewalks were constructed from local granite quarries.

How to get to Arabia Mountain from Atlanta:

Public transportation will take you within about 2.5 miles of the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Site. Take Marta’s Blue train line to its easternmost stop, then catch the 116 Redan Road bus to its final stop at Stonecrest Mall. From there, walk 30 minutes on the paved PATH trail to the Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Center.

2. Bring an appetite to Marietta

The Chattahoochee River is the life force of metro Atlanta – it’s the source of water in our homes – but locals also appreciate “the ‘Hooch” for its recreational opportunities. Head to the  Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area  outside of Marietta to hike the East Palisades Trail that follows the bank of the river. Keep an eye out for the elusive bamboo forest, a favorite photo spot for locals. 

After you've worked up an appetite on the trail, head to downtown Marietta – the town is bustling with local businesses and restaurants, and it's the perfect place to go on a food tour  (or design one of your own). Make sure you don’t miss the modern American dishes at Spring and the farm-to-table classics at The Marietta Local . End your visit with a stroll around Marietta Square , a park with a central fountain that’s perfect for people-watching.

How to get to Marietta from Atlanta:

Take Marta’s gold train line to the Arts Center Station, and then transfer to a CobbLinc RAPID bus heading north to the Marietta Transfer Center. 

3. Learn about Indigenous and natural history in Cartersville

Travel time: 45 minutes

Visit a historic town of the Muscogee people at the  Etowah Mounds State Historic Site  – here you'll see where the town’s chief lived, where the community held religious ceremonies and where they buried their dead. The park has a trail that weaves through the mounds and then follows the Etowah River. 

Learn more about the natural history of Cartersville and Georgia at the Tellus Science Museum  – check out the planetarium and a children’s exhibit that’s a hit for toddlers and teens alike. Finish your visit with a trip to Cartersville’s historic downtown, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Grab a southern meal at Table 20 , known for its hyper-seasonal menu, and then cross South Museum Drive to see the Coca-Cola mural, the world’s first outdoor advertisement for Coke.

How to get to Cartersville from Atlanta:

Public transportation doesn’t go from Atlanta all the way to Cartersville. The closest stop is in Acworth, about 15 miles south of Cartersville. There are companies that offer private tours with round trip stops between Cartersville and Atlanta.

4. Explore the North Georgia mountains in Dahlonega

Travel time: 1 hour and 30 minutes

The country’s first gold rush wasn’t out west to California, but down south to the mountain town of Dahlonega in 1849. Today, visitors can learn about that history at the Gold Museum , or even tour an old gold mine . When you’re ready to enjoy the natural beauty of the north Georgia mountains, head to Amicalola Falls State Park . The park has one of the region's most popular hiking trails, an easy hike to Georgia’s tallest waterfall. Before you head back to Atlanta, check out some of Georgia’s best agritourism sites:  B.J. Reece Orchards is a favorite apple-picking farm with a farm store, plus hayrides and a massive trampoline for kids to enjoy amidst the rolling hills of north Georgia. 

How to get to Dahlonega from Atlanta:

Dahlonega is too far north of Atlanta to reach it by public transportation, so you’ll have to drive and hire a private tour company to take you. 

5. Move to the music in Macon

Travel time: 1 and 25 minutes

Macon is the hometown of iconic musicians including Otis Redding, Little Richard and the Allman Brothers, and this city in middle Georgia is the perfect place to get into the state’s music history. Start with a quick tour of the Douglass Theatre , one of the few remaining venues from the Chitlin’ Circuit of the early 20th century, and then cross MLK Boulevard to visit the Georgia Music Hall of Fame . Capture the sound of southern rock at the Museum at Capricorn , then step into Studio A where Charlie Daniels, Marshall Tucker and the Allman Brothers recorded music. Grab lunch at H&H Restaurant , a favorite soul food stop of the Allman Brothers, where you’ll want to save room for dessert.

How to get to Macon from Atlanta:

If you’d rather not drive through unpredictable traffic on I-75, there are several private bus companies that offer roundtrip rides between Atlanta and Macon.

6. Get to know Chattanooga from the inside out

Travel time: 1 hour and 45 minutes

Visiting Chattanooga could easily fill a weekend, especially for outdoor enthusiasts who want to take advantage of all the great hiking options around and just outside of town. But if you only have a day to spare, start with a ride that’s especially popular with kids, the Incline Railway  route up Lookout Mountain. Next, take a cavern tour at Ruby Falls , unless you’re uncomfortable in tight spaces – there are some sections in the cavern where tour groups have to squeeze by each other. Round out your day trip by learning about Chattanooga’s old Big Nine district , which was once a music destination that was on par with Memphis’ Beale Street.

How to get to Chattanooga from Atlanta:

Driving is the easiest way to get to Chattanooga from Atlanta, but there are bus companies that have roundtrip options for a day trip.

5. Enjoy the museums and gardens of Athens

The oldest public university in the country, the University of Georgia is a big part of Athens, but it doesn’t tell the whole story. Start your visit to the Classic City with a stroll through UGA’s north campus, the most historic and picturesque part of the university. If you see people walking around the wrought-iron arch that connects campus to downtown Athens, know that they’re following the superstition that it’s bad luck to walk underneath it before graduation.

While downtown, make sure you stop by the Georgia Theatre , which has hosted live shows from famous Athens artists like R.E.M., Widespread Panic and The B-52's. Stop by the Georgia Museum of Art to examine more than 18,000 pieces of art in its permanent exhibit, then enjoy the beauty of nature with a walk through the State Botanical Garden of Georgia .

How to get to Athens from Atlanta:

There’s no public transportation to go between these two cities, but Greyhound and Megabus both offer roundtrip routes.

7. Enjoy a day on the water at Lake Oconee

Travel time: 1 hour and 19 minutes

Although Lake Lanier is the most popular lake in Georgia, Lake Oconee near Eatonton is the second largest lake in the state, and it's ideal for a more leisurely day trip. Boat and jet ski rentals are available, but if you prefer to be near the lake rather than on it, the area has great spots for bird watching and sunbathing too. Once you get your fill of Vitamin D, visit the Georgia Writers Museum to learn about famous Georgia writers including Eatonton’s own Alice Walker, who wrote The Color Purple . Finish the day by checking out Rock Eagle , a bird-shaped stone effigy made by Native Americans about 2,000 years ago.

Public transportation doesn’t reach Lake Oconee from Atlanta, but there are private tour companies that you can book to travel between the two cities.

9. Race and relax near Braselton

The closest winery to Atlanta is Braselton’s Chateau Elan , and visiting the 3,500-acre property makes for a relaxing getaway. Stroll by the muscadine grape vineyards and enjoy the many different wines they make on the property. When you’re ready to dial up the excitement, visit Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta , which is within earshot of the winery. It’s known as one of the best road courses, and hosts events such as Motul Petit Le Mans and Drift Atlanta. If you don’t come for the cars, stay for the groundhogs who live near the track and occasionally poke their heads out to get a glimpse of the action.

How to get to Braselton from Atlanta:

Public transportation from Atlanta doesn’t reach Braselton, so if you’d like to avoid driving, you’ll need to hire a private transportation service.

10. Get a European vibe in Helen

Travel time: 1 hours and 35 minutes

People visit Helen when they don’t want to travel far, but they want to feel like they did. Walking along Helen’s cobblestone-lined streets feels like you’re walking through a tiny village in the south of Germany, partly thanks to the fact that the city goes all out for its Oktoberfest celebrations. Visit The Troll Tavern and Cafe International for traditional German bratwurst and schnitzels. Before you leave this Bavarian-style mountain town, take a thrill ride on the Georgia Mountain Coaster , the state’s only alpine coaster.

How to get to Helen from Atlanta:

Public transportation doesn’t extend from Atlanta to the north Georgia mountains, but there are several private tour companies that offer transportation. Some companies offer wine tours that take visitors to Helen and its nearby wineries.

Growing up in ATL, we spent most of our time in the city, but just a short drive away, you can find yourself surrounded by lush, green forests and small historic towns. For many of these spots, we didn’t learn to appreciate them when we went as kids.

When we moved to LA, it always surprised me how many times I heard our SoCal friends mention how beautiful, lush, and green Georgia was. Funny how you learn to appreciate trees when you live in the desert, and sometimes you learn to appreciate the desert when you’re surrounded by trees.

Even if you’re not into the nightlife, it’s a great place to visit for food and find historical buildings with typical Southern charm.

Callaway Gardens is great for the whole family. Jacob used to visit as a kid, and the last time I went was with an ex (shh don’t tell Jacob! haha). During the holidays, they also have a light show that’s popular to go to.

6. Helen, Georgia

8. Toccoa Falls, Georgia

These falls are 186 feet tall, making it one of the highest cascades east of the Mississippi River. It is actually on the Toccoa Falls College campus but the falls are secluded in a separate area. A private path leads to the base where it opens up to an area surrounded by cliffs.

If you’re looking to escape city life, this city in the foothills of the Appalachians is a great getaway for the day. Hop on the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway to enjoy the views or explore the shops along Main Street. Whatever you decide, just take it easy and enjoy.

10. Chattahoochee National FOrest, Georgia

Brasstown Bald is one of the first places we camped together. It’s the tallest mountain in Georgia at 4,784 feet and gives you amazing long-range views. On high-visibility days, you can see four states – Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Tennessee!

12. Chattanooga, Tennessee →

We visited Chattanooga often when I was a kid, and even now, it still has a lot of charm. You can take a toll along the Riverwalk, check out the attractions, or enjoy one of the many outdoor activities. Before Atlanta had their own aquarium, the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga was where all the ATLiens used to go. In the same area, you can also stop by Ruby Falls.

13. Georgia Guidestones, Georgia

Also known America’s Stonehenge, these large granite statues are shrouded with mystery. No one knows who actually commissioned the landmark, but each is engraved with ten guidelines in twelve different languages.

15. Providence Canyon State Park, Georgia

Also referred to as the “Little Grand Canyon” of Georgia, Providence Canyon State Park offers some of the most picturesque views. Tones of orange, pink, and pastel red color the different layers of the canyon and make the perfect backdrop for a hike.

Macon hosts the  International Cherry Blossom Festival  and is known as the Cherry Blossom Capital of the World with over 300,000 Yoshino cherry trees. You know what would be cool, if you included a map with all of the locations to help people see which way things are.

Augusta, GA 2nd oldest city in Georgia! They have a beautiful Riverwalk and you can also take a day cruise down the Augusta Canal. Of course if you’re lucky enough to get on the list for The Masters, that’s a bucket lister! Also now there is the brand New Augusta Green Jackets Baseball Stadium, a minor league park, that sits on the water. Also, there are tons of locally owned shops & restaurants as well as art galleries, historical venues and beautiful homes!

Cave Spring, GA is a quaint little town about an hour away. Antiques, food, a Cherokee cabin, a cave, and a spring nestled in the foothills of the Appalachians. And even a pool in the shape of Georgia. There are also huge arts & crafts festivals in June & December.

The Tallulah Gorge is also a beautiful place to visit in GA. It ‘s the second largest hole next compared to the Grand Canyon.

Oh yeah! Thanks, Erica. We’ve been before, and it’s gorgeous out there. :) Maybe we will shuffle some things around when we put together a list for weekend trips.

Hi, Jaime. Great question! It changes a little every year probably depending on when they predict peak bloo to be. For next year, the festival dates are Friday, March 16 through Sunday, March 25, 2018.

1. Alpine Helen

“It’s the charm of Bavaria in the Blue Ridge Mountains.” Alpine Helen is a little town, approximately 95 miles north of Atlanta. Spend the day exploring the great outdoors with numerous activities for all. Kayaking , hiking, exploring the corn maze, panning for gold and horseback riding are only a few of the multitude of activities available at Alpine Helen. Of course, the dining options vary as much as the activities – from formal to casual, with German offerings and kid friendly options as well.  

2. Amicalola Falls State Park

If you’re looking to spend the day outdoors then consider Amicalola Falls State Park, an 829-acre park located approximately 75 miles north of Atlanta, between Ellijay and Dahlonega in Dawsonville, Ga. Amicalola Park is home to the Amicalola Falls, one of the highest cascading falls east of the Mississippi, making it a gorgeous place to hike and picnic. There are a variety of trails of varying difficulty. Of note is a five-mile hike leading to the Len Foote Hike Inn, Georgia’s only backcountry lodge. The park is also home to Springer Mountain Summit, the southernmost start to the Appalachian Trail which begins its 2,000+ mile, epic journey northbound for Maine. Be sure to stop by the visitors center to learn about the area, pick up a map, grab a bite at the Mountain View Restaurant and let kids play at the playground. 

3. Barnsley Resort and Spa

Barnsley Resort is located just an hour north of Atlanta and definitely is a destination to choose if you want to splurge on class and style. This gorgeous “Grand Southern Estate” can keep you busy – or not. Choose a brisk bicycle ride by the lake, a horseback adventure, disc golf, canoeing or an afternoon shooting at the sporting club. Take your kids to the barnyard, kick back and relax by the pool or get pampered in the spa. 4. Blue Ridge, Georgia

Just short of two hours from Atlanta proper is Blue Ridge, one of Georgia’s favorite mountain towns. Nestled amid unspoiled beauty, find a variety of activities for the whole family. From horseback riding to hiking and zip lining to the must-not-miss Blue Ridge Scenic Railway, this little town is bursting with beauty as far as the eye can see. Head to Centennial Olympic Park with its iconic Fountain of Rings (you can play in it) and light show set to music. Across the street from the park, be sure to take the kids to the Children’s Museum of Atlanta to explore all things art, science, technology and more.

Art enthusiasts will not want to miss the High Museum of Art , a world-class museum that caters to even the smallest family members with special programs and exhibits. You’ll also want to check out the Center for Puppetry Arts, which presents entertaining puppet theater for young and old. Workshops and special programs are available, and be sure to visit the Jim Henson Collection at The Worlds of Puppetry Museum.

Atlanta is home to a world-class zoo, and a visit to Zoo Atlanta is sure to delight any animal lover. It is home to twin giant pandas and more than 1,000 animals from around the world.

Active families will love spending a day on the Atlanta Beltline . The Beltline is miles of trails and transit around the city proper, linking neighborhoods, shopping and dining. While only open a few short months a year, Hillcrest Orchards in Ellijay, Ga., is one of the places to visit in fall. Pack your apple picking bags and some snacks and head out on the 90-minute trek to Apple Heaven. During apple picking weekends you can pick a variety of apples to your heart’s content, enjoy apple-laden treats fresh from the bakery and watch your kids enjoy a “day at the farm.” Kids will be able to interact with farm animals in the petting zoo, enjoy a variety of rides, watch pig races, play in mazes and so much more. Enjoy lunch in the Country Cafe, pick up some goodies in the Farm Market before heading home. 

8. Lake Lanier

The Legacy Lodge at Lanier Islands is a deluxe 1,500-acre resort located 40 miles from Atlanta and featuring top-notch activities and a wonderful spa, making it the perfect weekend retreat. We know it’s not always easy planning a road trip. You need to think about the logistics and overnight stays, but it’s worth it in the end.

So that’s why we’re sharing 8 of the best European road trips that’ll make driving in Europe a one-of-a-kind experience.

Don’t forget that a road trip is also time to relax and escape – give yourself enough time to take in the sights along the way and explore everything your route has to offer.

1. pula to dubrovnik.

We’re kicking off with Croatia, a small but diverse country that offers a variety of road trip experiences.

Start your journey in Pula – located beneath seven hills on the southern tip of the Istrian peninsula – and drive all the way along the coast to Dubrovnik where blue waters await.

Break up your 709km drive with stops in Rijeka, Zadar and Split. And who says you need to stop in Croatia? You could continue driving to Bosnia and Herzegovina to see the picturesque city of Mostar and the stunning Kravica waterfall.

2. the amalfi coast

Of course we’re going to persuade you to drive along the Amalfi coast. It’s the best way to take in Italy's spectacular coastal scenery.

The drive from Salerno-Sorrento is approximately 75km. You can cover this in a day, but you’ll want to stop along the way.

Salerno is the main southern gateway to the coast. Start your journey there and then head west to Vietri sul Mare, a small town famous for its ceramics and the start point of the coastal road.

Twelve miles on and you’ll arrive in Amalfi, where a stop for pasta or pizza is needed. Then after a few hours or an overnight stay, head to Positano – the most popular destination on the Amalfi coast. Known as the ‘vertical town’, Positano is a beautiful village built on a steep hillside, with narrow, winding streets that cascade down to the sea.

You might have to drive through tight, narrow roads on this road trip, but the views along the way make it worthwhile.

3. switzerland circular route

Enjoy a grand tour of Switzerland that starts and ends in Zurich, taking between 9 and 10 days.

Drive through four different language regions, across five mountain passes, past 22 lakes and 12 UNESCO world heritage sites on a circular route through one of Europe’s most beautiful countries.

On day one, take the route from Zurich to Lucerne, Lucerne to Interlaken on day two, and then Interlaken to Zermatt on the third day. The remaining days will take you through Montreux, Geneva and Basel.

Whether you’ve planned for a three-day trip or the full 10 days, a Swiss road trip has plenty to offer. Mountain views, stunning lakes, quaint old towns and some of the best roads in Europe – what more do you need?

4. iceland's ring road

Get comfy in the car and drive along Iceland’s Ring Road, which encircles the entire nation.

The Ring Road is 1,328 kilometres long, 1 the equivalent of driving the full length of the UK from John o’Groats in Scotland to Penzance in Cornwall.

You can drive the entire route in around 12 or 13 hours but where’s the fun in that? For a memorable road trip, you’ll want to stop at some destinations.

The Ring Road loops the island in a full circle, skirting around Iceland's central, uninhabited highlands. Along the way you’ll find the most popular tourist attractions, including the Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, Dyrhólaey cliffs, and Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. 

And if you’re planning a winter road trip, don’t forget to keep an eye out for the captivating northern lights.

5. Norway's atlantic road

What’s the world’s most beautiful car journey? Many might say Norway’s Atlantic Road, which runs along the west coast of the country.

The road, which covers just 8.3km, has National Tourist Route status and the entire stretch between Bud and Kristiansund is packed with coastal scenery, culture and history.

Cruise along roads that curve and zigzag across the Norwegian Sea, drive on the famous Storseisundet Bridge, known for its distinctive architecture, and watch as waves crash dramatically against the road during stormy weather.

6. The wild atlantic way, ireland

Stock your car with the essentials and head to Ireland for a road trip along the Wild Atlantic Way, one of the longest defined coastal routes in the world.

Take in enchanting villages, ancient monuments and amazing landscapes as you drive from the Inishowen Peninsula in the north, down to the picturesque town of Kinsale, County Cork, in the south.

Must-see spots include the Cliffs of Moher (one of Ireland's most iconic natural attractions) and Fanad Head, home to the picturesque Fanad Head Lighthouse which stands as a beacon at the entrance to Lough Swilly.

Despite being called the Coast of Death, there’s nothing frightening about this part of the Galician coast.

Discover the myths and legends surrounding this area of Spain, which was once considered Finisterrae (World's End), and enjoy an unforgettable trip of around 150 kilometres along local roads.

Watch the most magnificent sunsets on the Atlantic Ocean and witness the power of the sea at capes including San Adrián, Vilán or Fisterra.

8. north coast 500, scotland

Check oil levels, make sure you’ve got the right tyre pressure and pack whatever you need for a road trip along the North Coast 500 in Scotland.

Start off in the northern city of Inverness and weave your car along the west coast to Applecross. Then head northwards towards the towns of Torridon and Ullapool.

From there, you'll venture to some of the most northerly coastal points in Scotland, passing by Caithness and John o' Groats before heading south again through Dingwall and finally back to Inverness.

Cover just over 500 miles and take in ancient castles, glistening sandy beaches and the impressive heritage of the North Highlands.

And don’t forget that a road trip is also an escape – give yourself enough days to take in all the beauty and explore everything your route has to offer.
