DESTINATION IRELAND Quaint pubs, a cozy, mystical atmosphere, river dancing, clover green meadows and a lot of sheeps - these are associations that will probably be floating around in many people's heads when the name "Ireland" comes up. The country, also known as the Emerald Island because of its many green cliffs, hills and valleys, is definitely a must-see destination!

The Irish are said to have an exceptionally high level of hospitality and the almost 85,000 m² island is considered one of the most beautiful countries in the world - Ireland can undoubtedly withstand this reputation. Culture and nature are closely linked – embark on a day trip along the spectacular coastline in Dublin holding a cool Guinness in an authentic pub with traditional Irish live music reflects this link perfectly. Ireland, the land of myths and legends, with its many mysterious burial mounds and castle ruins, offers a lot of adventurous routes. UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as the "Brú na Bóinne" landscape area, the "Skellig Michael" island and the "Giant's Causeway" are just few visits to complete the travel experience of Ireland.

NORTHERN IRELAND

The towns and villages of Northern Ireland each have their own individual charm. Armagh - also known as the "spiritual capital of Ireland" due to St. Patrick - or the artistic city of Lisburn with its 18th-century cityscape are definitely worth a visit. The small town of Newry, whose history goes back over 850 years, or Belfast, the building site of the world-famous Titanic.

Fun fact: more footage of the legendary Game of Thrones series was filmed in Northern Ireland than anywhere else in the world!

nordic tours ireland

Dublin is both the capital and the largest city in the country. It is not without reason that Dublin is the most visited destination in Ireland, notorious for its friendly residents, traditionally atmospheric music and extremely lively and harmonious atmosphere. Famous sights and attractions such as the brewery "Guinness Storehouse" or the impressive library of the Trinity College with the more than 1000 year old "Book of Kells" should not be missed when visiting Dublin

nordic tours ireland

SOUTHERN IRELAND

Particularly fascinating are the cities of Shannon, Galway and Cork as well as the Kerry - Southern Ireland district, offer a multitude of culturally attractive cities and endless panoramic landscapes. The breathtaking "Cliffs of Moher" and probably the most beautiful peninsula in Ireland "Dingle" are also in the south of Ireland - a region that will truly impress travelers.

WESTERN IRELAND

The western part of Ireland beholds a variety of famous sights - the "Wild Atlantic Way", which leads through an impressive coastal landscape, the charming monastery "Kylemore Abbey" and the rocky coastline "Flaggy Shore", which is littered with fossils that are several million years old.

Western Ireland is above all a true paradise for those seeking tranquility, nature lovers and active holidaymakers.

The reviews speak for themselves. See what Nordic Visitor travellers said about their experience with us.

The tour was perfect and went smoothly the entire time. Communication from Nordic Visitor was timely and detailed. Would book with this tour company again.

Memories we'll cherish forever

We found Norway to be a fabulous country and enjoyed every minute of our trip. The scenery was fantastic, the places visited were brilliant and the people were incredibly friendly and helpful. The information pack provided by Nordic Visitor was invaluable, the route chosen for us was superb and the places we stayed in were great. Likewise, the excursions offered, especially the Rib Safari were fantastic and gave us memories we'll cherish forever. Lastly, but by no means least, Irja, our travel consultant, couldn't have been more helpful and I would like to extend a huge thank you to her for all that she did.

Unforgettable in so many ways

It was unforgettable in so many ways, highlights after highlights. We knew to expect a lot after our trip to Iceland a couple of years ago, also organised by Nordic Visitor. Our expectations were exceeded and more. We saw northern lights three times, the food everywhere was excellent, experienced dog sledding in the moonlight and sleeping in the SnowHotel, and we saw a white reindeer! How lucky we are to have experienced all that. We have now returned home, happy and full of awe.

A great experience

Very well-organised tour and a great experience. Nordic Visitor were very professional and their experience was evident in choosing the well-located and comfortable accommodation they selected for us. Best of all we got to see the northern lights!

Incredibly happy!

Our travel agent, Małgorzata, was amazing to work with! She was able to add a few extra days in Oslo and arranged transportation via train to Bergen. Overall, I thought booking this vacation online and making payments was seamless. All the hotels we stayed in were nice, clean and safe! We loved the breakfast buffets, they were top notch! Also, collecting our rental car and navigating in a foreign country was seamless. We are incredibly happy that our tour package that we received at our first hotel included a physical map that had our tour highlighted.

I'll be recommending Nordic Visitor to my friends

The trip was really amazing. We had an absolutely superb time in Tromsø; hotel and excursions were spot on. The guide and whole the staff was really professional. Professional photos taken by the guide were really fantastic. They gave us excellent care, more than what we have experienced on any trip. Our favourite experience was the snowmobile, but catamaran trip was great too. Certainly I will be recommending it to my friends. I was very pleased that those who delivered the services showed a lot of professionalism.

Very satisfied customer

This was my second experience using Nordic Visitor. I am a very satisfied customer. A few years ago we did a self-drive tour of Iceland that was just amazing. This time we did a train/cruise combo tour of Norway. Once again, I can only say you will have a fantastic experience and you will appreciate the labuor of organising and planning being handled by experts who know what they are doing. The cruises through the fjords were beautiful as were the train trips. We loved the combination of train and boat travel as each offered distinct beauty from a different perspective. The country is truly lovely and we look forward to booking future travel with Nordic Visitor!

Extraordinary!

Extraordinary! Everything went off as planned without a hitch. Our travel guide, Juliana, was exceptional, very responsive in answering our questions and providing updates.

Very satisfied with Nordic Visitor

We were very satisfied with the tour and overall experience with Nordic Visitor. The hotels were strategically chosen and the quality of hotels was satisfactory. The optional tours were also highly recommended. Timings of the schedules throughout the tour were ideal and not rushed.

Best vacation we ever had!

Our family of 5 (3 adult children) loved our Norway fjord tour. We saw the most beautiful scenery and loved each hotel. The food was delicious. Something for everyone. Our guide Al and driver Chris kept things running smoothly. We will have memories to last a lifetime. Thank you Nordic Visitor. Best vacation we ever had!

An excellent decision to book with Nordic Visitor

Following research, we decided to book with Nordic Visitor. This was an excellent decision. The booking process was easy and informative and Hanna was always available for guidance. The accommodation provided was top class and, importantly, convenient to the train stations from which we travelled. Our tour was amazing throughout with stunning scenery and sights.

The tour gives you a fabulous overview of Norway!

The tour gives you a fabulous overview of Norway. We did a lot of travel in between sights but this enabled us to have a real breadth of experience, from fjords to mountain passes, railway adventures and small boats. Our tour guide was excellent and the sights and experiences outlined for us were top-notch. The materials provided about our tour were excellent and well thought out.

We booked our tour of Scotland with Nordic Visitor based on a past experience on a tour in Iceland. We loved both of them. The itinerary was well planned and covered a lot of different parts of the country. Guides were well informed and lots of fun. Our hotels were top-notch. Going on a small group tour was much better than trying to do the drive ourselves. We could relax and enjoy the scenery, something we could not have done if we had to concentrate on driving.

Scotland •  Edinburgh •  Fort William •  Dunkeld •  Portree

Ireland •  Dublin •  Cork •  Galway •  Clifden

Get inspired by this round-up of 15 amazing things to do in Edinburgh .

6. Can you visit Scotland and Ireland on one trip?

Absolutely! Explore Scotland and Ireland on one amazing trip and you won’t be disappointed. Learning about their interwoven histories side by side will give you an even more immersive cultural experience.

Plus, it’s easy to travel between these Celtic neighbours. Flying between Edinburgh or Glasgow, Scotland's largest city, and Dublin, the Irish capital, is usually the most convenient option. Depending on where you fly from, the journey is around 310-350 kilometres (190-220 miles), and takes about 1 hour.

Travel with Nordic Visitor and we’ll take care of the logistics for you. In fact, you’ll have your own personal travel consultant to book your flight between Scotland and Ireland, along with your accommodation, local transport, and more.

Discover more reasons why you should visit both countries on one trip in this blog: Scotland or Ireland – Where should you go?

7. When is the best time to visit Ireland and Scotland?

Any time is a good time to whisk yourself off on a Celtic getaway. But visit from April to October, and as well as enjoying mild temperatures, you’ll have plenty of daylight hours for sightseeing.

Most Scottish and Irish attractions also tend to have their longest opening hours at this time of year. And you’ll have a wider range of outdoor activities and excursions to choose from.

Travel in April or May to glimpse spring flowers blooming across the cities and countryside. With fewer visitors than in summer, you could experience the most popular destinations when they’re a little quieter.

In summer you’ll see festivals, such as the iconic Fringe in Edinburgh, bring a lively atmosphere to towns and cities throughout Scotland and Ireland. The countryside is also at its most lush from June to mid-September.

If you want to make the most of wildlife-watching opportunities then summertime is ideal. For instance, you could spot nesting puffins, breaching whales and soaring golden eagles.

It’s worth bearing in mind that midges, small flying insects, are most active in summer. So remember to bring repellent for when you’re in the countryside.

Come autumn – mid-September through November – you can see forests turning beautiful shades of red and orange. And, like early spring, this is a shoulder season, so you’ll have more of the attractions to yourself.

On the other hand, if you’re imagining snow-dusted hills, crisp days and crackling log fires, you could go for a Scottish winter break . You could even go on a Christmas or New Year break in Scotland .

8. How many days do you need to tour Ireland and Scotland?

To get the most out of your escorted trip to Ireland and Scotland, 14 days or more is a good length of time for your visit. This will allow you to spend 1 week in Ireland and 1 week in Scotland – perfect for seeing the highlights of both countries.

With around 2 weeks, you’ll be able to go beyond the top spots and explore some hidden gems with your guide. Not to mention the fact that you’ll have time to learn from your guide and ask questions at each stop without feeling rushed.

If you have another time frame in mind, share your ideas with your dedicated travel consultant. Or to spend longer exploring both countries, check out these expert-curated Scotland and Ireland self-drive tours , ranging from 10-25 days.

9. Can I customise my guided tour?

Book a small group or privately guided tour and you can personalise parts of your itinerary. This is easy to do on our website.

Customise your trip when you book online by choosing from a range of optional activities, including afternoon tea, whisky-tasting and boat tours.

You can also extend your stay with extra nights in Dublin or Edinburgh, at the start or end of the guided portion of your itinerary. This is ideal if you want free time to explore at your leisure, or to add a guided food or city tour to your package.

10. Can I choose the arrival date?

Yes, you can check what start dates are available for the tour you’ve picked out by taking a look at its online availability calendar.

For guided small group tours, choose from a number of guaranteed departure dates between April and October. Spaces can fill up quickly though, so if you see one that works for you, we recommend booking as soon as possible.

Privately guided tours of Ireland and Scotland are more flexible, so you can begin your trip on any date you like between April and October.

11. When should I organise my flights?

Before booking one of these escorted tours of Scotland and Ireland, we recommend checking what flights are available. That said, it’s a good idea to wait until after your trip is confirmed to make your travel arrangements.

Your dedicated consultant will send you a confirmation email to let you know when your trip is ready. Once you receive this, you can go ahead and purchase your preferred flights.

Airport transfers are included with privately escorted trips. And, if you’re booking a small group tour, they’re available for you to add as optional extras online.

Good to know: When you book a guided combination tour package that visits Scotland and Ireland, your transport between Scotland and Ireland is included. On privately guided tours, you'll take a flight. And on small group tours, you'll travel by ferry with your guide.

12. What should I pack for my tour?

The mildest temperatures and best weather in Scotland and Ireland is often during spring, summer and autumn – April to October. But this part of the world is known for its changeable conditions, so you’ll want to come prepared for sun and rain.

No matter when you visit, we recommend packing:

  • • Comfortable hiking shoes or boots
  • • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • • Warm, insulated jacket
  • • Fleece or woollen jumper
  • • Light base layers
  • • Cosy hat, scarf and gloves
  • • Sunglasses
  • • Rucksack
  • • Reusable water bottle
  • • UK plug adapter (this will work in Ireland and Scotland)

Great company

Booked a self drive iceland trip with them. Everything went smoothly and organization of trip was great. I’m definitely going to book with them again when I return to Iceland in future. I believe they do any Northern European country.

Hi Zach, thanks for taking the time to leave a review! It's great to learn you had a fantastic self-drive trip around Iceland. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Land of Fire and Ice someday - or one of our other destinations in Europe!

Wonders of Ireland - Small Group Tour

We had such an amazing experience with Nordic Visitor who hosted the "Wonders of Ireland" 8-day tour. The group was small, 16 people, so we could use a large van rather than the huge buses that take forever for people to load/unload at each stop. The hotels were top notch, the sites we visited were diverse and enjoyable (distilleries, castles, gardens, waterfalls). Our tour guide Brian Simpson was truly incredible. He had a wealth of knowledge about the history, music and folklore of Ireland. He made the trip both informative and fun, and helped the group come together with his warm and engaging personality. Melissa our driver was also fantastic - kind, helpful and chatty. They both went above and beyond to ensure everyone was cared for and enjoyed the journey. I was torn about which company to use, and am so grateful we went with Nordic Visitor.

Date of experience : July 10, 2023

Hi Caitlin, we're pleased you enjoyed your small group tour in Ireland! Brian and Melissa are excellent hosts, and we can't wait to share your kind words with them. We hope you left Ireland with unforgettable memories. Thanks for your review!

What do our customers say?

The reviews speak for themselves. See what Nordic Visitor travellers said about their experience with us.

Relaxing and fun journey

The Scandanavian winter tour package and it's connections made it very easy to see the 4 capital cities and Bergen. There were plenty of suggestions for things to see and do. There was a great mix of cruise and rail segments between cities giving us a chance to see other parts of each country. Staff reserved an extra rail and overnight for us as soon as we asked about it. All in all a very relaxing and fun journey.

Just what we wanted

The plan was just what we wanted and the actual trip delivered just that. Nice balance of scheduled events and free time in the cities visited. Hotel locations were excellent and our tour guide was always available and helpful for additional questions and suggestions.

First class

Communication was first class. Selection of accommodation was perfect. Great hotels in good locations.

Very easy process

We found the whole process very easy. The instructions and information provided was clear and made it easy to find hotels and transport links. The hotels were centrally located, close to transport links but were not noisy. Our personal travel consultant was very helpful and friendly. We liked the recommendations suggested in the daily itinerary.

Thoroughly recommend Nordic Visitor

We would recommend Nordic Visitor to anyone considering an introductory tour of Stockholm, Copenhagen and Oslo. Basics of logistics where well-stated. It was easy to commute from one capital to the next. Itineraries were clear yet flexible. We thought moving from one country to the next would be a challenge - it was not. Nordic Visitor arranged all that was needed, yet gave us the flexibility to do more or otherwise should we want. Again, we thoroughly recommend Nordic Visitor. We look forward to our next excursion in Scandinavia through Nordic Visitor.

Fantastic tour that included the highlights for each country we visited. I really feel like we have seen the best of the countries with the time we had. The activities were terrific. I felt supported by my tour planner, Irja, as we travelled.

Excellent vacation

We had an excellent vacation through Nordic Visitor. The expertise of our tour guide and small group size of 16 enhanced our experience. We had a good blend of free time and tour related programs. We did arrive 2 days early to Stockholm and stayed an additional 2 days in Bergen. We found this time beneficial to explore the areas more.

A pleasure to work with

Working with Nordic Visitor, and specifcally Irja, was a pleasure. She did an excellent job presenting the information. It was nice to see her enthusiasm as she discussed activites the staff liked in each city. She responded to our questions promptly and in detail. The paperwork, itinerary, written day-by-day descriptions, vouchers, and tour info was all very well-thought-out and presented.

I would definitely recommend Nordic Visitor!

I was so happy during this entire trip. I wanted to travel to Norway before but I didn't understand how Norway in a Nutshell worked so the itinerary prepared by Irja was just perfect. She was always available to answer all my questions and the hotels and activities planned were perfect and easy for me as a solo traveller. I just had to enjoy each city. I would definitely recommend Nordic Visitor!

Very well planned

The tour was great and very well planned. We had enough time to explore the cities and the Swedish countryside. It was fun to drive and take the ferries as well.

The best vacation we've ever had!

This was the best vacation we've ever had and I'm planning a Norway trip for August 2024 as we speak. Thanks for a phenomenal time!

An amazing trip

We had an amazing trip in Swedish Lapland and the Scandinavian cities. Nordic Visitor's assistance helped us to have scheduled activities, but also free time to pick and choose what we wanted to do. It was a great balance of planning, with the inclusion of spontaneity!

Getting to Scandinavia

Many of Nordic Visitor’s tours of Scandinavia begin in Stockholm, Sweden’s capital and largest city. Stockholm Arlanda Airport is the main gateway for international air travel in Sweden and is served by dozens of airlines. Furthermore, it serves as a major hub for SAS (Scandinavian Airlines) and Norwegian Air.

Here are examples of other airlines that fly to Stockholm Arlanda: United Airlines, British Airways, Air France, EasyJet, Lufthansa, KLM, Icelandair, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways

We recommend checking airline websites directly for flight availability and timetables. You can also use an airfare search engine, such as Skyscanner, Dohop or Kayak, for example.

Flights are not included in Nordic Visitor packages, but all of our itineraries can be customised with extra nights in Stockholm, or another arrival city in Scandinavia, if you’d like to rest up after your air journey.

Different ways you can experience Scandinavia

We have tours for all varieties of travel styles and interests. See our options for exploring Scandinavia below.

Guided Small Groups

Independent cruise, independent train, scandinavian triangle, what to see and what to do on a tour of scandinavia.

The best way to enjoy a trip to Scandinavia is to visit Sweden, Denmark and Norway on the same tour. Why? Because these countries share a similar cultural heritage and are well-connected via modern motorways, railways and waterways.

As such, we highly recommend the Scandinavian Triangle , a route that incorporates the capitals of Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

Travel between Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen via train, plane and ferry. Or you might prefer to do a road trip around the region. Spend your days enjoying walking tours, savouring delicious meals in Scandinavian restaurants, or cycling along the pedestrianised streets and bike lanes.

Opt for one of our Scandinavia tours and you’ll discover a land brimming with gorgeous scenery. Come in the summer to enjoy long daylight hours, wild swimming and al fresco dining. In the winter, expect a festive wonderland and smaller crowds at top attractions. You may even get a chance to spot the northern lights!

As a specialised tour operator in Scandinavian countries, Nordic Visitor organises trips to this beautiful corner of the world. We have many more ideas and travel tips to help you explore Scandinavia your way!

Here’s one of our suggestions for a Scandinavian countries tour itinerary:

Day 1 - Arrive in Helsinki, Finland Fly into Helsinki Airport and head to your hotel in the city centre. Try tasty Finnish cuisine at a local restaurant, and see some of the capital’s top sights such as Senate Square, Uspenski Cathedral, and the Old Market Hall.

Day 2 - At leisure in Helsinki Enjoy more downtime in Helsinki to visit attractions like Sibelius Park, Finlandia Hall, the Finnish National Opera House, and Parliament House.

The capital of Finland is known for being a design hub, boasting its very own design district and “design tram route”. It’s also awash with gorgeous green spaces where you can enjoy a spot of people watching.

Day 3 - Ferry to Tallinn Next up is the capital of Estonia, Tallinn, which is just 2 hours away by ferry from Helsinki. Soak up the medieval architecture and atmospheric streets of this Baltic city today. You could walk from the Upper Town (Toompea), or visit the Orthodox St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and striking Toompea Castle

Day 4 - Baltic cruise to Sweden Enjoy another day getting to know lovely Tallinn, with its fascinating mix of Eastern and Western European influences. You might like to explore the Kadriorg district, Kadriorg Palace, or the Estonian Art Museum.

Later in the day, head to the port and embark on your Baltic cruise to Stockholm, an overnight journey with restaurants, shops and cafés on board to keep you entertained.

Day 5 - Arrive in Stockholm, Sweden Enjoy breakfast this morning while watching as the vessel navigates through the Stockholm Archipelago, made up of around 30,000 islands.

After your cruise docks, spend some time walking through Gamla Stan, the centrally located Old Town. Enjoy a fika (a Swedish coffee break) at one of the local cafés in this medieval neighbourhood.

Day 6 - The highlights of Stockholm Spend a full day in the Swedish capital, discovering the city’s attractions and districts. You could join a walking tour to see the best of Stockholm in a day, taking you to must-see spots like the City Hall, Royal Palace and trendy Södermalm quarter.

Or, a ferry ride will whisk you off to the island of Djurgården, home to the Vasa Museum and Skansen, the world’s oldest open-air museum. Meanwhile a day trip to Drottningholm Palace on the outskirts of town is highly recommended.

Day 7 - Fly to Copenhagen, Denmark Head to Stockholm Airport after breakfast and board a plane to Copenhagen. Once in Denmark’s capital, take a walk down the city’s popular Strøget street for a bite to eat, or go check out the fun and games at the old fashioned Tivoli Gardens amusement park.

  • Find out why these capitals are some of the  best Scandinavian cities to visit

Day 8 - Discover Copenhagen Soak up the charms of Copenhagen today, either on your own or as part of a guided tour. You might want to visit Rosenborg Castle, the Botanical Garden and Torvehallerne food market.

We also recommend hopping on a boat tour to see Christiansborg Palace, the Royal Danish Opera House and the colourful Christianshavn Canal from the water.

Day 9 - Overnight cruise to Oslo, Norway Ahead of tonight's journey to Oslo, spend the day enjoying more of Copenhagen. Why not make like the bicycle-happy Danes and rent a bike? You could check out the exquisite Amalienborg Palace, as well as the colourful Nyhavn harbour and the Little Mermaid statue.

Later, head to the port for your overnight cruise to Oslo.

Day 10 - Explore Norway’s capital city After your ship arrives early in the morning, the whole day is yours to roam Oslo. Take a walk to the bustling Aker Brygge waterfront area and visit the Akershus Fortress. Or, head to the Bygdøy peninsula to explore historic museums.

If you love art, make sure to take a walk through the delightful Vigeland Sculpture Park. Don’t miss a visit to Oslo City Hall if you want to see where the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony is held.

Day 11 - Scenic train journey to Flåm This morning, go to Oslo Central Station to begin your Norway in a Nutshell® tour – one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world. Look out the window to see picturesque landscapes and quaint villages like Gol and Geilo.

Change at Myrdal to board the Flåm Railway for one of the top highlights of the entire trip: a 900-metre (half-mile) descent to the picturesque village of Flåm, where you’ll stay for the night.

Day 12 - Norwegian fjord cruise Prepare to witness breathtaking Norwegian scenery today, as you hop on a cruise that takes you through beautiful fjords. You’ll be able to admire the glittering waters, cascading falls and forested mountains of Sognefjord, passing through Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord.

Afterwards, it’s an exciting coach and train ride to Bergen.

Day 13 - Discover Bergen Known as the gateway to the fjords , Bergen is Norway’s charming second city with plenty of its own attractions to uncover. You can visit the medieval houses of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bryggen, and take the funicular up Mount Fløyen for a panoramic view of the city and fjords.

Day 14 - Depart from Bergen, Norway Fly back home from Bergen-Flesland Airport, having enjoyed 14 days discovering the many delights of Scandinavia.

What other ideas are there for Scandinavian tours?

There are so many more places to see in this part of Northern Europe. For example, you could delve deeper into the Nordic region, which is made up of Finland , Iceland , Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

One popular option is to travel further up the Norwegian west coast towards the Lofoten Islands in Northern Norway on a Havila or Hurtigruten cruise , for an exciting journey towards the Arctic Circle. You could even visit the remote Svalbard, also known as the kingdom of polar bears.

Another alternative is to explore more of rural Scandinavia. Discover natural gems like the breathtaking Norwegian fjords and mountains.

Like the sound of an odyssey to the far north of Europe? Then we recommend visiting Lapland – a remote region covering parts of Sweden, Finland and Norway. Come in winter for the chance to see the aurora borealis, soak up snowy landscapes, and meet Santa Claus.

Or hop on a plane and visit Iceland as part of your Nordic experience!

Good to know : Most of our itineraries aren't set in stone, and there are many possibilities to tailor your plans. We can modify your tour if you'd prefer to arrive in a different city, spend more free time in one destination than another, or add other towns to your trip.

Just ask your Nordic Visitor travel agent for advice.

Super organised

Everything was super organised and detailed, there is nothing to complain well done Nordic Visitor. We enjoyed all tours that were organised for us.

Amazing experience

Having not done a tour like this before, it was comforting to know that someone else had taken the reins and everything was double-checked. Liza was helpful with all my booking questions and all the team members we met on our trip were friendly and knowledgeable. We learnt so much about Swedish life and traditions on our stay, in addition to some amazing experiences.

Trip of a lifetime!

This was a trip of a lifetime and I would do the exact same trip over again! We had a blast and cannot wait to get back to Sweden.

Thanks Nordic Visitor!

Nordic Visitor made booking what could be a potentially complex trip (finding the right accommodation and day trips, etc.) really easy. We booked very last-minute and our consultant Ruzena could not have been more helpful - booking and arranging the package we wanted for the exact dates we requested at short-notice. Thanks!

Unforgettable experience

It was the best decision to book with Nordic Visitor. Juliana, our travel agent, responded quickly and gave us great tips and service when we needed it. The excursion we took, snowmobiling and chasing the northern lights, was unforgettable, and the dog sledding was a wonderful experience. The stay at the seasonal ICEHOTEL - wow! Every detail was well planned and scheduled by Nordic Visitor. We are extremely grateful and it exceeded our expectations.

Exactly what we're looking for

This was my second tour with Nordic Visitor, and I will continue to use them as a first choice option when exploring trips in the Europe area. They offered exactly what my wife and I are looking for in planning guided and semi-guided experiences.

We were well looked after

We had a fantastic time. We were well looked after. Our activities were well laid out. Liza our Nordic Visitor agent was really good keeping us informed as well.

We absolutely loved our experience with Nordic Visitor! From our first inquiry to our last goodbye, we had exceptional service and attention. It quite literally was everything we asked for and more! Our travel consultant worked diligently to accommodate our every wish, was always in communication with us, and was simply amazing! This was a trip of a lifetime!

Outstanding experience!

The entire experience was perfection! The dog sledding was outstanding. There are no words to adequately describe how beautiful and peaceful it is out there with the dogs. The reindeer farm was so fun! Everything and everyone was truly outstanding! All of the drivers were prompt, friendly, and knowledgeable. Starting every day with such a beautiful and thoughtfully prepared breakfast spread was above and beyond. Every excursion/tour was amazing, from the guides to the food to the excursions themselves. We loved everything.

Nordic Visitor thought of everything

I can't say enough about Nordic Visitor. They really thought of everything and handled even real time unexpected issues promptly. We would have definitely not had such a good experience had I tried to plan this all on our own!

Thrilling trip!

We were very pleased with our trip to Lapland, Finland. Quite honestly, we didn't know what to expect, because we had never been there before. The activities we experienced (snowmobiling, dog sledding, reindeer sledding) meant we were thrilled with our trip. Nordic Visitor made the travel very smooth and enjoyable.

Excellent experience!

Cannot fault our experience. Everything was made very easy from start to finish. Thank you so much. Loads included but still had enough time to do other things and explore on our own. Excellent experience. No glitches so no negative memories of the experience. Loved equally by child and adults!

Alternatively, choose Finnair and you can fly from Dublin to Helsinki in 3 hours 5 minutes, before taking a connecting flight to Finnish Lapland.

Helsinki-Vantaa Airport is Finland’s gateway for international air travel. From here, you’ll be able to take a direct flight to either Rovaniemi or Kemi with Finnair or Norwegian. On the other hand, if you’re heading for Swedish Lapland it’s best to fly from Dublin to Stockholm Arlanda Airport, Sweden’s air travel hub. From Stockholm, you can fly to Kiruna with SAS or Norwegian. The journey takes around 1 hour 30 minutes.

Before deciding on dates for your trip, we recommend checking airline websites directly for flight availability and timetables. Or use airfare search engines, like Skyscanner, Dohop or Kayak, for example.

Flights aren’t included in Nordic Visitor packages, so you’re free to choose the journey that suits you best. But it’s good to know that all of our itineraries can be customised with extra nights in your arrival city if you’d like to rest up after your flight.

VISIT ONE OF LAPLAND’S ICE HOTELS OR GLASS IGLOOS

One of the “coolest” things you can do in Lapland is stay in an ice hotel. Marvel at the ice sculptures, imaginatively themed rooms, and restaurants and bars carved from frozen water. Since many of the hotels melt in the spring, artists start from scratch and rebuild them each winter.

Spending the night in an ice suite is on many travellers’ wish lists. And don’t worry, you’ll be kept cosy thanks to thermal sleeping bags and reindeer hides, with the chance to step into a hot sauna in the morning.

If you’d rather sleep in a warm room, you can take a guided tour of these ice hotels instead.

You could stay in a glass igloo in Lapland. Imagine snuggling up in your heated dome, looking through the clear glass up to the night sky. You might even be treated to a northern lights show from your bed!

Here are the best ice hotels for an overnight trip in Lapland:

  • ICEHOTEL (Kiruna)
  • Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos (Rovaniemi)

VISIT FINNISH OR SWEDISH LAPLAND

For your trip to Lapland, you can take your pick from Finland or Sweden. Both destinations offer similar experiences, such as aurora hunting excursions, snowmobile adventures, and opportunities for husky and reindeer sledding.

That said, Finnish and Swedish Lapland each have particular highlights that you should know about before deciding where to go. Check out these itinerary recommendations for a taste of what to expect in Finland and Sweden, respectively.

  • Find out how you could spend 5 days or 6 days in Lapland
  • Get inspired by these 3-day and 4-day Lapland tours

ITINERARY SUGGESTION FOR FINNISH LAPLAND:

Day 1 - Arrival in Rovaniemi & snowmobile safari Upon arrival, a driver will meet you at Rovaniemi Airport for your transfer to your accommodation. You could rest after your journey or head into town to explore a little before your first Lapland adventure.

Come evening, it’s time to embark on a snowmobile safari and hunt for the northern lights. Enjoy an exhilarating ride through the snow, looking for the aurora borealis, as an expert guide leads you along the trails.

Round off your excursion with a hot drink and snack beside the campfire, then return to your hotel for a peaceful night’s sleep.

Spend the night in Rovaniemi.

Day 2 - Dog sledding and Finnish sauna Head into the snow-draped scenery outside Rovaniemi today with a guided dog sled excursion. Learn about this traditional mode of transport in Lapland, starting with a brief lesson at the kennel. Then mush through the woods with your own sled.

Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure in Rovaniemi. You could indulge in a sauna session, the typical way to relax and unwind here in Finland.

Day 3 - Reindeer farm and Santa Claus Village This morning, hop on a snowmobile and make your way to a traditional reindeer farm. Here you can learn about the culture of Lapland’s native people, the Sami, and go on a sleigh ride.

Next, prepare to meet the “man in red” with a visit to Santa Claus Village, just outside Rovaniemi.

Soak up the festive atmosphere of this Christmassy haven, which is open year-round. Enjoy a private meeting with Santa with the elves on hand, and send a postcard from the Santa Claus Post Office. Then why not browse for souvenirs at the craft shops?

Day 4 - Day at leisure and visit to the Arctic SnowHotel Learn more about the local history, nature and culture in Rovaniemi this morning by paying a visit to the Arktikum Museum. Here you can explore the intriguing exhibits about Finnish Lapland and the Arctic region.

Come evening, head to the Arctic SnowHotel in Lehtojärvi, just outside Rovaniemi. Take a guided tour of this fascinating frozen hotel, which is created anew each year. Check out the rooms, restaurant and bar, all sculpted from ice and snow.

After your tour sit down for a delicious 3-course meal at Restaurant Kota, inspired by traditional Sami architecture. Then, you’ll either return to your accommodation in Rovaniemi, or overnight in the Arctic SnowHotel for an unforgettable stay. Choose from sleeping in an ice room or a glass igloo.

Spend the night in Rovaniemi or the Arctic SnowHotel.

Day 5 - Departure Today you’ll be transferred back to Rovaniemi Airport where you’ll fly home from your Lapland holiday.

  • Visit Finland in winter with one of these Rovaniemi tours

ITINERARY SUGGESTION FOR SWEDISH LAPLAND:

Day 1 - Arrival in Kiruna and snowmobile safari After touching down at Kiruna Airport, a driver will meet you and take you to your hotel. Enjoy some free time to yourself, perhaps getting to know the town or simply relaxing before you head out later.

In the evening you’ll get to explore the countryside on a snowmobile excursion, searching for the northern lights. Follow your guide through the snow as they lead you to the best spots to look for the aurora. And enjoy the thrill of the ride as you go.

Later, cosy up beside the fireplace in a wooden hut and tuck into a rustic dinner of traditional local food. Afterwards, your guide will take you back to your accommodation.

Spend the night in Kiruna.

Day 2 - Dog sledding Today you can enjoy one of Lapland’s most special traditions: husky sledding.

Meet the huskies at the kennel and learn how to drive your sled from an expert guide. Head out onto the trails, gliding through the woods and across snowy plains, soaking up the views as you go. Afterwards, you’ll fuel up with a hot cup of coffee and a light lunch by the campfire.

In the evening, you could chase the northern lights again on a snowshoe excursion.

Day 3 - Visit the ICEHOTEL and a Sámi reindeer farm This morning, discover the famous ICEHOTEL, situated in the village of Jukkasjärvi just outside Kiruna. This is the original ice hotel that set a trend for the many others that now exist around the world.

Begin with a guided tour of this extraordinary hotel, learning how artists build it using ice from the Torne River nearby. You’ll also get to explore the ICEHOTEL 365, a year-round structure that stays cold in the summer thanks to solar energy.

Once you’ve seen the stunning ice rooms, sculptures, church and bar, you’ll be collected from the ICEHOTEL for your next excursion. Get an insight into the Sámi way of life by visiting a traditional reindeer farm. Drive a reindeer sled then enjoy some snacks in a lavvu, a typical Sámi tent.

Then comes the highlight: sleeping in a room made entirely from ice and snow!

Spend the night in Kiruna or the ICEHOTEL.

Day 4 - Departure Today you’ll take a transfer to Kiruna Airport where you’ll fly home from your Lapland holiday.

  • Experience Swedish Lapland on one of these Kiruna tour packages
  • Discover the top 10 reasons to take a winter break in Kiruna, Sweden

BEST TIME TO VISIT LAPLAND

The best time to visit Lapland is between December and March, when you can enjoy the magical white scenery, northern lights, and excursions in the snow.

Certain activities are available in Lapland year-round. For example, in summer you can meet Father Christmas, or even visit certain ice hotels that use solar power to keep some of their rooms frozen. That said, we recommend travelling in winter for the quintessential Lapland experience.

Thanks to snowfall from mid-October to mid-May, you’ll be surrounded by snow-blanketed scenery between December and March. These are the perfect conditions for winter activities, including reindeer sleigh rides and snowshoe excursions.

What’s more, in winter you have the best chance of seeing the northern lights. The long, dark nights at this time of year provide the ideal backdrop for watching the aurora borealis.

In summer, on the other hand, there are long daylight hours in Lapland – a phenomenon called the “midnight sun”. With light skies all night long, it’ll be too bright to see the aurora borealis.

Find out how to increase your chances of spotting the aurora borealis with these guides:

  • Best time and place to see the northern lights in Sweden

CELEBRATING CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR IN LAPLAND

Perhaps you want to time your Lapland trip for December to celebrate Christmas or New Year’s Eve in this winter wonderland?

Spend Christmas in Lapland and you could attend a festive gala dinner for Christmas Eve, accompanied by Santa’s elves. Join in the fun and help to decorate the Christmas tree before you tuck into a mouth-watering feast.

Then spend the ultimate Christmas Day in Santa’s Lapland. Whizz through the snow on a reindeer sleigh, meet Santa Claus in his workshop and enjoy delicious Christmas food. Think freshly baked gingerbread biscuits followed by a warming glass of glögg (mulled wine).

Or visit Lapland at New Year for a celebration to remember. Attend a New Year’s Eve party in a wooden hut in the middle of a Finnish forest, experiencing local customs and cuisine. And, of course, you’d get to watch a spectacular fireworks display at the stroke of midnight.

But don’t forget, you can get into the festive spirit at any time of year with Santa breaks in Finnish Lapland !

We just returned last night from our trip to Scotland and I wanted to let you know what a great trip we had with Nordic Visitor. You were wonderful setting up our requests and I cannot thank you enough for switching our tour dates when we were unable to go as originally planned in May. The hotels and food were brilliant. Brian was magnificent. We could not ask for more of a guide. Even the special trip to see Highland coos. This was our second Nordic Visitor trip and we are now looking into our 3rd for next year. Thank you again for great memories. I am glad we were able to meet you on our first night.

When you choose to join a guided small group tour, one of the main benefits is that you can enjoy the company of like-minded travellers on your getaway.

This makes guided tours a great choice if you're travelling on your own. Get inspired by this round-up of the best group tours in Northern Europe for solo travellers .

In comparison to self drive tours , you also have an experienced local guide on hand to teach you about the sights and take you on your journey. We keep our tours small so that you can enjoy more time with your guide, and don’t feel rushed when you’re at attractions.

6. ARE CHILDREN ALLOWED TO JOIN THE TOURS?

Yes, children over the age of 12 are welcome on our escorted tours. We also recommend having a look at our family-friendly self-drive and private tour options if you would like more flexibility, and the widest range of choices for customisations. We’re here to help, so contact us if you have any questions about travelling in Northern Europe with kids.

7. WHAT IS THE LUGGAGE SITUATION ON SMALL GROUP TOURS?

You can bring one medium piece of luggage on our guided packages. Please note, it will be your responsibility to take it to and from your room, and back onto the bus for the next day’s adventures.

We recommend you take a small rucksack or small day bag with items like extra layers and cameras. For more handy travel tips, have a look at our packing guides for Iceland , Norway , Scotland  and Ireland .

8. WHAT FOOD IS AVAILABLE AND HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

On all of our small group tours, breakfast is included so each day you’re starting your adventure with plenty of energy. The food available will depend on your destination as each of the countries within Northern Europe have distinct culinary specialities that you’ll be able to try.

If you have any dietary requirements, make sure to inform your dedicated travel consultant in advance.

9. HOW MOBILE DO YOU NEED TO BE ON THE TOUR? IS HIKING INVOLVED?

The activities of your trip will depend on the tour you choose. Each package has an activity level and recommendation so you can explore at your ideal pace and not feel rushed. If there are excursions or activities that you have questions about, get in touch with your travel consultant.

10. WHO GOES ON YOUR GUIDED TOURS?

Our packages feature a range of excursions aimed at different activity levels, so our guests vary in age and interests. To find out more about the activity levels and accessibility on our packages, contact our team.

11. HOW MUCH LEG ROOM WILL I HAVE ON THE BUS?

Each of our buses is specially chosen to ensure our customers are comfortable and can relax. All of our vehicles seat 19 people comfortably but depending on the tour, we have a maximum of 15-16 guests onboard to ensure there’s plenty of legroom.

12. CAN I CHOOSE THE ARRIVAL DATE?

Yes, you can choose your preferred arrival date. Nordic Visitor has a wide range of arrival dates depending on the package and season. All of our dates are available to browse online, so once you’ve chosen a country and tour you want to join, you can choose the best time to visit for you.

If you have already booked a tour but travel plans have changed, contact your personal consultant to rearrange your bookings.

13. CAN I EXTEND MY TOUR BY A DAY OR TWO?

Yes, you can extend your trip by a day or more at either end of the journey. If you’ve not added extra days when booking, but want to, contact your personal travel consultant as soon as possible.

14. WHEN SHOULD I BOOK MY FLIGHT TICKETS?

We’d advise that you look over flights for timings and dates, but hold off buying until you’ve booked your preferred tour. Once you’ve had a confirmation email from your personal travel consultant, and all your relevant package information, you should then choose and purchase your flights.

15. WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR MY TRIP?

We recommend preparing for all sorts of weather when you’re visiting Northern Europe. Depending on the season you visit, you might need these things:

  • A lightweight jacket or wool sweater
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Sensible footwear with good grip
  • Gloves, scarves and thermal socks
  • A swimsuit and quick-dry towel
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent in the summer months
  • An insulated coat, thermal layers and long johns in the winter months

For a detailed list of what to bring and how to prepare for your adventure, read our travel guides for Iceland , Norway , Scotland and Ireland .

2025 Northern Europe Cruises: Discover Iceland, Norway & Belgium

Market Square (Kauppatori) in Helsinki, Finland

There's no better way to travel the world than aboard a Norwegian Cruise Line ship. If you're interested in seeing the sights of northern Europe, you won't want to miss the opportunity to cruise with Norwegian - which consistently wins the award for Europe's top cruise line from World Travel Awards year after year. With multiple departure ports of call, you can start your cruise from your city of choice before traveling on a voyage you won't forget.

Here, we'll take a closer look at Norwegian's 2025 Northern Europe cruises , highlighting some of the most notable ports of call and helping you plan your cruise.

2025 Northern Europe Departure Ports

If you'd like to explore Northern Europe from the sea, you'll have 10 potential ports of departure from which you can start your journey. You can begin your cruise in northern Europe or from locations further south or west if that's more convenient for you. When cruising to the north of Europe in 2025, these are the cities from which you can depart:

  • Copenhagen, Denmark.
  • Lisbon, Portugal.
  • London (Southampton), United Kingdom.
  • New York City, United States.
  • Oslo, Norway.
  • Paris (Le Havre), France.
  • Reykjavik, Iceland.
  • San Juan, Puerto Rico.
  • Stockholm, Sweden.
  • Tromsø, Norway.

So, get ready to pack your bags and head to the departure port that best suits your travel plans in 2025.

Hallgrimskirkja Church, Reykjavik, Iceland

2025 Northern Europe Cruise Ports

With a staggering list of port cities in 2025, the most challenging part of planning your trip will be deciding which cities to visit during your northern European cruise vacation. Perhaps you want to take a northern lights tour in Reykjavik, or maybe you can't wait to visit the Tower of London. Whatever your dreams are for your 2025 cruise, Norwegian has a port city that will leave you breathless. Here are some highlights of what could be on your agenda in 2025.

Reykjavik, Iceland

With its rugged natural beauty and vibrant towns filled with rich cultural experiences, a visit to Iceland won't disappoint. There are few places with the diverse topography and landscape found in Reykjavik , where you can see flowing lava, hot springs, impressive waterfalls, and rocky mountains waiting for you to snag the perfect photo to document your cruise. While the natural setting is enough to fill your senses, don't miss out on the top-tier dining experiences that you'll find in the quaint villages.

London (Southampton), England

London (Southampton) serves as a starting point for several of our cruises around northern Europe, which comes as no surprise given the vast number of activities you can participate in before starting your cruise vacation. Visit with royalty at Buckingham Palace, see London from a bird's eye view aboard the London Eye, or even take in a Broadway-style show in the West End. Sip some tea and munch some scones as you dream about the adventures awaiting you along your voyage.

RELATED CRUISES: 12-Day Baltic from Stockholm to Paris: England, Germany & Belgium 12-Day British Isles Round-Trip London: Ireland & Scotland 14-Day Northern Europe from New York to Reykjavik: Iceland, Greenland & Canada

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Amsterdam is a city built upon a series of canals that make for the perfect morning or afternoon stroll. Take in the city's scenic beauty and marvel at the stunning architectural design of the buildings that border the canals. Consider renting a bike and traveling around the city like many of the locals. If you prefer to relax, a canal cruise might be more your speed. Don't miss the opportunity to see some of the most astounding museums in the world, including the Anne Frank House and the Van Gogh Museum.

Galway, Ireland

This port city on Ireland's picturesque west coast has a rich history that dates back to the thirteenth century. Explore a traditional Irish farm, search abandoned castles, or tour remarkable cathedrals during your stop in Galway. If you're up for an adventure, explore Aillwee Cave, an underground sanctuary carved from melting water during the Ice Age, where you can see interestingly shaped stalactite and stalagmite formations and catch a glimpse of the bones of an extinct species of bear. Before you leave, no trip to an Irish village would be complete without some music and ale at the local pub.

Helsinki, Finland

Known as Scandinavia's "White City of the North," Helsinki has a fascinating architectural style featuring buildings erected using local light-colored granite. Tour the National Museum of Finland to learn more about the cultural history of the Finnish people and view artifacts dating back to the Stone Age. Visit one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites, the Suomenlinna fortress, a fort located on a quiet island where you can find a bit of solitude. Or take a walk through the central Market Square, where you can sample local produce, taste local food, and shop for souvenirs in the comfort of heated tents.

Customer Reviews

Our expert travel consultants have a wealth of experience in organising tours to the Emerald Isle. Whatever your dream trip to Ireland looks like, you’re sure to find a Nordic Visitor tour that ticks all your boxes. Don’t just take our word for it - check out our customer testimonials below!

What people are saying about us

We don't like to brag about ourselves, so here are some nice things our travellers had to say.

Excellent guide

Arrival at the hotel was well before check-in, but they offered a reduced-rate room. It would have been a really bad day without that brief rest. Hotel was not especially helpful for first-day activity. Fortunately, we were aware of hop-on/hop-off which took us to Perlan. Everything worked out, and when we were picked up the next morning, everything clicked.

Great and memorable experience!

The hotel accommodations were fantastic - very nice hotels and good meals at each stay. The highlight hotels were Hotel Laxa and the Hofsstaðir Country Hotel - beautiful views, luxurious rooms and great meals at both locations.

This was my first time travelling internationally and everyone was so welcoming and friendly. Our tour guide was funny, kind and informative. He knew the seasons and the best time to visit waterfalls - he was able to arrange time for us to visit a geothermal bath and fit that into our itinerary.

Really great and memorable experience!

Great if you want to see a lot of sights

For people who want to see a lot of sights in a short period of time, the Wonders of Scotland tour is for you. The only downfall is there is not a lot of time to explore the towns we drive through other than a quick lunch. The tour helped us figure out locations we would like to come back to and explore more deeply in the future.

Wonderful experience

We did the Wonders of Scotland tour and it was just as advertised and absolutely wonderful. Our guide Allen and driver Brian went way beyond expectations. They were both friendly, accommodating and extremely competent.  The hotels and food were superb without exception. We are seasoned travellers and this Nordic Visitor tour was one of our best experiences.

Absolutely flawless!

Absolutely flawless. Everything was well coordinated from start to finish, and we received fast and detailed answers to questions before and during the tour. Our tour guide David was the best we could have been given. He was personable, knew the area, history, people, and geology very well, and it's almost staggering the amount of information we came away with. He was fantastic at planning out the day with consideration to what the weather would be when we arrived, and filled the day in-between the scheduled itinerary with so many amazing stops and places, tailored to what he could see we all wanted to look at. The accommodations were excellent, some with stunning views, and we felt well cared for with pickups. Will absolutely be booking again, and have already shared the website with multiple people who are now interested in touring Iceland themselves.

A wonderful experience in a beautiful country

Beautifully organized - great tour guide/driver.  Food was absolutely wonderful. The stops were well planned for sightseeing and bathroom breaks. Never really long rides on the bus. Bus was spotlessly clean and comfortable. Overall a wonderful experience in a beautiful country.

Enjoyable tour

The small group tour was enjoyable. The pace of the tour was just nice and we had so much fun! The guide, Snorri, had imparted lots of knowledge about Iceland and shared many insights! We had a wonderful time thanks to him.

Well organized!

Nordic Visitor made my first solo international trip a huge success. Everything was well organized and the tour guide Reynir took very good care of our group. I made friends with the other tour mates who also had positive feelings about our experience. I am telling everyone that I highly recommend this company.

Whether you have a single question or a special request, we're here for you.

  25. Ireland Customer Reviews : Nordic Visitor

A wonderful experience in a beautiful country. Beautifully organized - great tour guide/driver. Food was absolutely wonderful. The stops were well planned for sightseeing and bathroom breaks. Never really long rides on the bus. Bus was spotlessly clean and comfortable. Overall a wonderful experience in a beautiful country. Sharon, Singapore.
