As the ship cruises past picturesque inlets, you'll spy old fishing communities dating back to pre-Viking times. One of these is Loen, where you'll land if weather conditions allow. In the shadow of the mighty glacier, there's much to discover.

After a short boat ride to the floating jetty, you'll take the Loen Skylift to enjoy spectacular views from the summit of Mount Hoven. After, you can take part in optional activities like snowshoeing, sledding or winter kayaking.

Alternatively, join an optional excursion to visit a Sámi village to learn more about the indigenous and semi-nomadic reindeer herders. The Expedition Team may even give a lecture on Sámi culture.

Day 8 - Tromsø :

Located 400km north of the Arctic Circle at 69°N, the small city of Tromsø is known as Norway's gateway to the Arctic. Surrounded by icy fjords and towering peaks that remain snow capped for much of the year, Tromsø sits on the eastern edge of Tromsøya, and is linked to the mainland by an elegantly arched bridge. As you arrive, look out for humpback whales – your Expedition Team will let you know of any sightings nearby.

If you're looking for an adventurous winter wonderland, then Tromsø is the perfect destination with is a superb range of winter activities such as dog-sledging, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. You can also join some of Hurtigruten's optional excursions with the Expedition Team from dogsledding and snowshoeing to nature hikes. Tromsø has a fascinating history, vibrant culture and bold architecture. Its modern Arctic Cathedral is a landmark that is visible to the Hurtigruten ships sailing through the Tromsø Sound, and features a huge stained-glass window.

The city is home to the world's northernmost brewery, Mack Bryggeri, which also runs Ølhallen, a lively pub where locals go for a chat and a beer. During the winter season, Tromsø's city cafes and bars are packed with locals, warming themselves with a freshly brewed coffee, or taking in a locally brewed beer. Internationally recognized restaurants serve up cuisine with produce sourced from local farms and fisheries, with a range of arctic dishes hard to find anywhere else.

Day 9 - narvik :.

Discover one of the world's most northerly towns when you arrive into Narvik this morning. It is situated 150 miles inside the Arctic Circle and surrounded by three fjords, offering the town a spectacular setting. Here, you can take time to explore the galleries, shops, and restaurants, which specialise in local seafood and reindeer meat.

Narvik was an important port during World War II and a strategic target for Germany . Visit Narvik War Museum where you will learn about the Allied troops' liberation of the town.

Then take a cable car ride to the top of Mount Narvik, or go on optional excursion hikes, snowshoeing or kayaking on the fjord. During the evening, you can keep an eye out for the Northern Lights as the ship crosses Vestfjorden.

Days 10/11 - Science at Sea :

Over the next two days, the ship may go off the beaten track to wherever takes our fancy. Along the route there are many islands and fjords to discover in this region. You can go ashore in expedition boats to study wildlife in their natural habitat.

Activities and landings will be picked at the discretion of the Expedition Team, and they'll draw on their in-depth knowledge of the area to bring you to the most exhilarating and naturally beautiful locations.

You'll also learn more about what you've seen - with lectures from the Expedition Team or in the Science Center. You can join a Citizen Science project like Happywhale, which uses photos of sightings to track whale migrations around the world.

Day 12 - Bergen :

This morning, the MS Maude arrives into Bergen. This is one of Norway's most beautiful cities and an ideal place to explore by foot.

Bergen was founded in 1070 AD and was Norway's capital for many years and remains a hub for travelling around Norway. It has retained much of its local character and history such as the historic UNESCO-listed Bryggen district. With its colourful wooden wharfs dating back to the 14th century, it's a must for all visitors to explore.

Included excursion in Bergen - Mount Fløyen . The Fløibanen funicular takes you to the summit in just six minutes. From the top you will have superb views over the city, which is hemmed in by seven mountains and the sea. If you're feeling full of energy, you can hike one of many forest trails at the top of Mount Fløyen.

Returning to the city check out some of the cafés or pubs and maybe try the local Hansa beer, visit a museum or browse boutiques along cobblestone streets and alleyways.

Day 13 - Egersund :

Egersund is a beautiful town of colorful wooden houses and ancient runes. You'll love the cosy feel of Egersund, with its brightly coloured, houses – so different to usual, white-painted Norwegian homes.

This has been a hub of civilisation since the Stone Age, and you can even find ancient runes carved into rocks nearby. It also features one of the best natural harbours in Norway – as a fishing town, Egersund used to land more fish than anywhere else in the country.

It's an ideal town to explore on foot. You can take an optional hike in the hills or wander around the town centre on your own. For panoramic views, there is a viewpoint at Varberg, a short hike from the town centre.

Day 14 - At sea :

Make the most of your final day at sea. As you cross the North Sea, you may spot the giant gas flares atop one of the many oil and gas platforms.

Enjoy one last soak in the hot tub, relax in the ship's lounge, edit your photographs, or join the Expedition Team as they review the highlights of your memorable winter expedition cruise to the coast of Norway.

Day 15 - London, Tilbury :

Complete your voyage across the islands of the North Atlantic in Tilbury, the gateway to the U.K.'s cosmopolitan capital city, London. After breakfast, it's time to leave your home for the past 14 days.

As you head ashore, you'll take with you the lifetime memories of Norway in winter - wonderful fjords, fascinating towns and cities, friendly people, and the magical Northern Lights.

northern lights cruise from dover

This day at sea gives you all the time you need to ease into your journey. You’ll definitely want to start enjoying onboard facilities like the hot tubs, sauna, and indoor gym. But you’ll likely also be striking up a camaraderie with the Expedition Team as well as other crew members and guests. The Expedition Team will begin the first in their series of insightful lectures over at the Science Center. Each member of the Expedition Team are experts on different subjects and you’ll find them to be walking, talking treasure troves of stories and information. They’ll share their extensive knowledge about the places, history, nature, people and natural phenomena we are likely to encounter during this winter cruise along the Norwegian coast. Today’s topics might include the geology of the North Sea, the science behind the Northern Lights, or the history of Hurtigruten as a national icon of Norway. Even as no one can completely predict the weather, wind and waves on the North Sea are known to be a bit choppy at this time of year. Our Captain’s goal is to bring us into Bergen the next day, but where nature is involved, nothing can be completely set in stone. This is just part and parcel of the expedition experience, adding extra suspense and excitement to your adventure. Rest assured that we’ll be doing our best to make your cruise as safe and as smooth as possible, even if it means being flexible and adapting our plans to factor in the elements.

northern lights cruise from dover

In the morning, you’ll get your first glimpse of the Norwegian coast as small islands and mountains appear on the horizon. We’ll leave the North Sea and enter scenic straits and fjords on our way to the Hanseatic city of Bergen. Depending on the weather when crossing the North Sea, we aim to arrive in Bergen in the afternoon. As our first port of call in Norway, and one of the country’s most picturesque cities, Bergen won’t disappoint. Founded in 1070 AD, Bergen was Norway’s capital for many years and you’ll see that the city has retained a great deal of its local character, heritage and charm. Your included activity in Bergen is an excursion to Mount Fløyen. We’ll hop on Hurtigruten buses from where the ship docks and drive to the Fløibanen funicular. The ride to the top of the mountain takes just six minutes. At the summit, 320 metres high, bask in stunning views over the city surrounded by seven mountains and the sea. If there’s time, we might also have an opportunity to venture into the alpine forest here for a short hike. Once back in the centre of Bergen, spend some time wandering the cobblestone streets and alleyways of this thriving, compact city. Be sure to stroll through the historic UNESCO-listed Bryggen district with its colourful wooden wharfs. The area dates back to the 14th century and now houses boutique stores selling a range of Norwegian arts and crafts. Across from Bryggen is Bergen’s famous fish market which is full of sights, sounds and scents to savour.

northern lights cruise from dover

We start the day with some scenic cruising into Nordfjord, passing Hornelen, Europe’s highest sea cliff, early in the morning. The fjord run offs from Jostedalsbreen, Europe's largest mainland glacier, and flows west into the ocean just south of the Stadlandet peninsula.  Thanks to the smaller size of our expedition ship, we’ll be taking you through straits and channels that larger vessels simply can’t fit through. This allows you to get that much closer to the fjords and mountains that the Norwegian coast is so famous for. It also means we can access small communities that few ever get to visit, giving you an intimate glimpse into the culture and way of life here. It would make sense if lectures for today focus on the geology of Norway, covering the formation of its fjords, mountains and glaciers. You might also learn more about the Viking culture that used to inhabit the region and their thirst for exploration that still beats in the hearts of Norwegians today. You’ll spot numerous old fishing communities located along the fjord that actually date back to pre-Viking times. One such place is Loen, where we arrive around noon. In the shadow of the mighty Jostedalsbreen glacier, at the very heart of Nordfjord, Loen is the perfect place to explore the gorgeous surrounds.  We use our small boats to land at a floating jetty which is conveniently also a starting point for the Loen Skylift. The cable car climbs 1,011 metre to the top of Mount Hoven in only five minutes. At the summit, you’ll be treated to an unforgettable vista over the fjord. Mount Skåla and Lake Lo can be seen to the east, and Jostedalsbreen Glacier and Olden to the south. With these panoramas all around you, you can participate in several optional winter activities on the mountain, such as snowshoeing or sledding. If time and weather allow, there might also be an opportunity to do some thrilling winter kayaking on the fjord.

northern lights cruise from dover

Today you can spend time in the ship’s lounge, soaking in a hot tub, or out on deck. Whatever you do, don’t take your eyes off the scenery as we sail through Helgeland county and the thousands of islands of the lowland area. Pick out the peaks of the Seven Sisters mountain range, thought to be the petrified bodies of seven troll sisters caught out at sunrise. You’ll likely be amazed at Torghatten mountain too, with its distinct hole right through the middle. Local legend states that the mountain was in fact the troll-king’s hat which turned to stone when it was pierced through by an arrow. At this point of your expedition, we are around the halfway mark along Norway’s long coastline and you won’t be far off from the Arctic Circle. This is an exciting time as the further north we sail, the greater your chances of seeing the Northern Lights. The natural phenomenon occurs when charged particles carried by the solar wind disturb the Earth’s upper atmosphere, creating mesmerising ripples and rays. The end result is a cosmic lightshow of dazzling colour and dance. Our route along the Norwegian coast will take us directly under the Auroral Zone, a prime area of Northern Lights occurrences. We’ll be hoping to see multiple sightings of the lights in different locations. The weather in northern Norway will be noticeably nippier and the amount of snow you’ll see will normally start to increase as well, which actually has the effect of making the landscapes seem brighter. Depending on when in the winter season you sail, the periods of daylight will be fairly short and grow even more brief above the Arctic Circle. It’s not complete darkness though as you’ll also get to experience the very romantic ‘blue hour’. This is an extended twilight that can actually be several hours long. The winter sun glows just below the horizon, bathing Norway’s fjords and mountains in a dreamy cobalt-blue light. The Expedition Team will continue their onboard lectures which may cover local folklore and fairytales or a history of navigation along the coast from lighthouses to satellites. You might also learn about the quintessentially Norwegian love of the outdoors known as friluftsliv. Or perhaps pick up tips from the professional onboard photographer on how best to capture the aurora when they appear.

northern lights cruise from dover

There are just a few places on Earth where you can sail north of the Arctic Circle in wintertime. The Norwegian coast is one of them. The ship will officially cross over the Arctic Circle sometime in the morning. To mark the occasion in the tradition of Norwegian sailors, we’ll be inviting you out on deck for a special ceremony. Exactly what happens is something you’ll just have to find out on your cruise! The Lofoten Islands are one of the most spectacular locations in all of Norway and maybe even the world. As we approach the archipelago, the sight of the massive wall of mountains and dramatic peaks rising up out of the sea is something you’ll never forget. Serene fishing villages sit nestled in the sheltered coves, all the more charming if dusted with the season’s snow and if the aurora is seen swirling above. We sail along Vestfjord and arrive in Svolvær in the afternoon. This is the largest town in Lofoten with about 4,800 residents, many of whom work as fishermen. There are shops and art galleries to browse along the seafront promenade and rows of rorbuer, fishing huts, to admire. You might spot wooden racks called hjell dotted around the shores of the town too. Locally caught cod is dried on these racks and later turned into tørrfisk, or stockfish in English, and prized as a local delicacy. Fishing is clearly an important way of life in Lofoten and the lecture for the day may focus on how cod effectively helped to build Norway into a country. From where you get off the ship, it’s a short walk to your inclusive visit to the multicoloured Magic Ice bar. The former fish-freezing warehouse now displays a range of selfie-suitable ice sculptures that depict Lofoten life and Viking culture. Enjoy a signature spirit to warm you up, served in an ice glass of course! Your expert Expedition Team will also flex their local knowledge by handpicking safe and spectacular hiking trails or snowshoeing areas to offer as optional excursions.

northern lights cruise from dover

We arrive into Narvik in the morning. The town has a spectacular setting on a peninsula surrounded by three fjords: The Ofotfjord, Rombaken, and Beisfjord. The multiple mountains also help to shelter its popular ski slopes from strong coastal winds. And while Narvik is one of the most northerly towns in the world, some 220 kilometres within the Arctic Circle, it enjoys a milder climate than expected thanks to the North Atlantic Current. Narvik traces its history back to the Bronze Age and was a Viking settlement for a time as well. Modern Narvik developed as an all-year port for Swedish iron mines, which made the town a strategic target for Germany during World War II. You’ll visit the Narvik War Museum to see exhibits and artifacts from the war, learning about the heroism of British and Allied troops in liberating the town from the Nazis. In spring 1940, the British Admiralty launched Operation Wilfred to protect Narvik which in turn prompted Germany to invade the town with ten destroyers each loaded with 200 mountain infantry soldiers. The Royal Navy quickly responded, taking control of the coast and laying waste to the destroyers. Under the command of British General Mackesy, Allied forces launched an offensive to recapture Narvik. However, Mackesy refused orders from the Admiralty to bombard the town, choosing instead to prioritise the safety of the Norwegian civilians and to wait for the snow to melt to initiate his ground attack. The ensuing battle at Narvik two months later is considered to be the first Allied infantry victory in World War II. Aside from the museum, you can enjoy galleries, shops, and restaurants which specialise in locally-sourced seafood from the fjords and reindeer meat from the mountains. Ride the cable car to the top of Mount Narvik for the breathtaking views or go on optional excursion hikes, snowshoeing or kayaking on the fjords. The lectures for the day will probably be about Narvik’s World War II history or about the mammals of northern Norway.

Alta lies in the vast wilderness of Finnmark county, well above the Arctic Circle at 70 degrees north. Welcome to the turning point of your expedition and to one of the northernmost towns in the world with a population over 10,000. We’ll arrive here in the early afternoon and plan to stay past midnight to stargaze and watch for the aurora in Alta’s usually clear skies. The town is directly beneath the Auroral Oval, a zone known for consistent Northern Lights activity. If the heavens aren’t overcast, and the conditions are right, you might well be in for quite the show... You’ll learn more about the aurora at the modern Northern Lights Cathedral in Alta. The titanium-clad building and its spiral belfry dominate the skyline here, all the more impressive when illuminated at night. There is an interactive exhibition here that chronicles how Norwegian scientist Kristian Birkeland established Alta as an epicentre for ground-breaking Northern Lights research in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. You’ll also be treated to a classical concert in the cathedral as part of your visit.   Troms and Finnmark county also forms part of the traditional lands of the indigenous Sámi whose livelihoods revolve around semi-nomadic reindeer herding. The Expedition Team may take the opportunity being in Alta to talk more on Sámi culture. Not far from Alta is Máze, a Sámi village located along Kautokeino river and visitable as part of an optional excursion. When more snow falls as winter progresses, Alta is also prime territory for visits to snow hotels, dog sledding and snowmobiling.

It’s time to explore Tromsø, capital of the Arctic. But before we do, we’ll be on the watch for humpback whales out on deck or in the Explorer Lounge. Families of these gentle giants are known to frequent the winter waters here, feeding on the abundant herring. The Expedition Team will also be on the lookout and alert you to any sightings. We’ll reach the city of Tromsø around lunchtime and spend the rest of the day and evening exploring its fascinating history, culture and bold architecture. The Arctic Cathedral is one of the most striking landmarks in Tromsø, especially when lit up at night. It features an attractive, huge stained-glass window that is well worth seeing up close. Historically, Tromsø was a frontier town for returning hunters and explorers and acted as a launch point for several Arctic expeditions. Today, the city is often called the ‘Paris of the North’ because of its international and cultural diversity. You can busy yourself by browsing the shops or sampling the region’s fresh produce in a range of restaurants. Feel like meeting some of the friendly locals? Tromsø is home to the world’s northernmost brewery, Mack Bryggeri, which also runs Ølhallen, a lively pub where townspeople go for a chat and a few pints. Your included activity in Tromsø is a visit to the Polar Museum which is housed in a converted 1830s warehouse on the seafront. You’ll enjoy exhibitions that cover the city’s heritage as a base for famous trappers Henry Rudi and Wanny Wolstad, the first female hunter in Svalbard. Tromsø also played a crucial role in the expeditions of legendary explorers Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen. Other winter activities available in Tromsø include optional excursions with our Expedition Team on nature hikes, snowshoeing, and aurora-hunting bus rides. And like many places in Arctic Norway, when there is enough snow later in winter, the landscape becomes the ideal place to engage in some exhilarating dog sledding.

In the morning, we dock into the picture-perfect fishing village of Reine back in the Lofoten Islands. This is where red-painted rorbuer cling to a string of islands beneath sharp granite mountain ranges. The 450-metre tall Reinebringen is one of the most distinctive peaks, particularly dramatic when layered with snow. The combination of setting and colour makes Reine one of the most photographed landscapes in all of Norway. You’ll be hoping the Northern Lights are active above the village when we are there, completing the composition of your own photo of this piece of paradise. After spending some time wandering around Reine, ooh-ing and aah-ing at the scenery, you’ll go on your included activity for today. A 30-minute bus ride will take you to Å, one of the best-preserved traditional fishing villages in Norway. At the heart of the tiny village is the Norwegian Fishing Village Museum which covers the importance and development of fishing in Lofoten over the last 250 years. Exploring at your leisure, you’ll soon discover that the village is the museum and the museum is the village. Later on, return to Reine where there may be opportunities to do some hikes with the Expedition Team or even try some winter kayaking. The views to enjoy here will certainly tempt you to sign up to either. You’ll then rejoin the ship and marvel more at the surrounding scenery which is spell-bindingly beautiful, whether washed in the lights of the aurora or not.

Part of being on an expedition is knowing how to enjoy the moment; taking time out to reconnect with nature and the world around you. So, settle into a sofa in the panoramic Explorer Lounge or soak in a hot tub out on deck, sit back and simply take in the serene scenery that rolls quietly by. We’ll be passing through the Vega archipelago today, made up of some 6,500 islands, islets, and skerries. There’s more to learn in lectures from the expert Expedition Team and you can dabble in a bit of science with the microscopes and library of slides in the onboard Science Center. We also support a number of Citizen Science projects that you can join. These projects include Happywhale where your photographs help identify and track whales across the planet. Or the Globe observer project which combines your observations of clouds and sky conditions from below with data collected by satellites. Not only will you be supporting the scientific community, you’ll also be getting a better understanding of the world around you.

We welcome you to the little fishing village of Kalvåg, situated far out on the coastline with the open North Sea to the west. Its name literally means ‘Frozen Bay’ in the Old Norse. This probably gives you an indication that it isn’t always possible for our ship to make a landing here and that it does depends on the local weather and sea conditions at the time. If and when you do come ashore here, you’ll discover one of the best kept secrets of the Norwegian coast. No other expedition ships visit Kalvåg so you’ll experience an authentic slice-of-life community who will likely be thrilled to have visitors. As part of our traditional Norwegian coastal voyage, our Captains have sailed these waters for decades, always wishing there was time to stop and show you around this oh-so-charming village. We’ve listened to their expert recommendation and that’s now exactly what you’ll get to do on this expedition cruise. Admire an open-air art exhibition and walk around Kalvåg’s collection of old waterfront buildings, from restored wooden wharfs to herring salting warehouses. Cosy-looking houses cluster together around the bay, the reflections of their lights shimmering like candles in the waters below. The wonderful wintery atmosphere is even more captivating if you come when the village is coated with a snug blanket of snow.

northern lights cruise from dover

Your final day of exploration begins as we arrive at Mosterøyand Klosterøy in the morning, two of the myriads of islands that lie around the city of Stavanger. The islands are relatively exposed to the sea and so our going ashore here will be decided based on how kind the waves and wind are on the day. Mosterøy is a lovely island that is made up of a mixture of pastures for cattle, horticulture, and cute neighbourhoods all around. Klosterøy is less than a square mile in size but home to the historic Utstein Abbey and the 800-year old Utstein Church. The stone church is a protected site and while it seats up to 300 people, it is only used for special occasions. On the other hand, the abbey is Norway’s best-preserved medieval monastery and still hired out as a venue for concerts, seminars, and conventions. So much so that it is even noted as a well-known hosting ground for conferences on emergency medicine. The islands are connected by bridges and tunnels and all roads here lead to the city of Stavanger on the mainland. This is the oil and energy capital of Norway, an international, cosmopolitan city which is as hip as it is historic. You can learn more about Norway’s off-shore wealth on an optional excursion visit to the Norwegian Petroleum Museum, possibly the only one of its kind in all of Europe and built as a replica of an oil platform. Few places in Norway have embraced the foodie scene as well as Stavanger. The city’s creative cuisine has won it two Michelin-starred restaurants and earned it the nickname of ‘The Food Pantry of Norway’. You can stroll down Øvre Holmgate and take your pick of café, pub, restaurant or boutique store. Or how about popping in to the surprisingly fun and quirky Norwegian Canning Museum, complete with hands-on exhibits? You’ll never look at a can of tuna the same way again! While modernity thrives in avant garde gastronomy and Scandi street art, the city’s proud history is also never far from sight. Take a walk around the Gamle Stavanger neighbourhood which features 170 of Europe’s best-preserved wooden houses from the 18th century. You can also see Norway’s oldest domkirke, cathedral, constructed in the Anglo-Norman style around 1125 by an English Bishop, and virtually unchanged since the 1300s.

Your expedition is fast coming to an end. By this stage of your journey, you’ll have made friends with your fellow explorers, finding that you have much in common in terms of your interests and passion for nature. You can spend time chatting with them over a snack at the bistro-like Fredheim, perhaps recalling the best moments of your expedition together. Enjoy drinks at the Explorer Bar while swapping friendly banter and stories of past adventures. You might even catch a couple of the crew and Expedition Team here too. If you’d rather spend this last day at sea in quiet contemplation, you’ll likely have multiple memory cards full of Northern Lights photos and more to sift through and reminisce on. Take stock of everything you’ve seen and experienced with a blood-pumping session in the gym and then relax in the soothing steam of the sauna one last time.

We pass the white cliffs of Dover during the early morning hours and dock at the city’s harbour. After a final breakfast, it’ll be time to say a fond farewell to the ship, the Captain, crew, Expedition Team, and your new-found friends.  As you head ashore, you’ll take with you special memories of Norway in winter: wonderful fjords, fascinating towns and cities, friendly people, and the magical Northern Lights.  We look forward to welcoming you aboard again with us soon!

From the White Cliffs of Dover to Norway’s Arctic…

Board comfortable MS Maud in Dover bound for Norway. If winter weather on the North Sea doesn’t delay us too much, we’ll arrive in the bustling city of Bergen and ride the funicular to the panorama at Mount Fløyen. Next stop is Loen at the foot of Mount Hoven, the summit of which has views of Jostedalsbreen Glacier. Then, chill out at the Magic Ice bar in Svolvær and brush up on British WWII history in Narvik.

… and back!

Alta in the Arctic boasts ideal skies for you to see the aurora, perhaps appearing above its artistic Northern Lights Cathedral. Then it’s on to Tromsø’s Polar Museum where you’ll discover the importance of this polar city and enjoy optional winter excursions. The fishing villages of Reine and Å in the Lofoten Islands are exceptionally pretty while Kalvåg is a hidden gem few ever see. We’ll attempt to go ashore on the islands of Mosterøy and Klosterøy or explore the heritage of Stavanger before returning to Dover.

What’s included

Life on board.

Day 1: Day 1 - Dover

northern lights cruise from dover

Goodbye Blighty

All aboard at Dover! MS Maud is here, ready and waiting to bring you north to Norway´s magical landscapes on the hunt for one of nature’s greatest spectacles: The Northern Lights.

Day 2: Day 2 - At Sea

northern lights cruise from dover

This day at sea gives you all the time you need to ease into your journey. You’ll definitely want to start enjoying onboard facilities like the hot tubs, sauna, and indoor gym. But you’ll likely also be striking up a camaraderie with the Expedition Team as well as other crew members and guests.

Day 3: Day 3 - Bergen

Bergen, Norway

In the morning, you’ll get your first glimpse of the Norwegian coast as small islands and mountains appear on the horizon. We’ll leave the North Sea and enter scenic straits and fjords on our way to the Hanseatic city of Bergen. Depending on the weather when crossing the North Sea, we aim to arrive in Bergen in the afternoon. As our first port of call in Norway, and one of the country’s most picturesque cities, Bergen won’t disappoint.

Day 4: Day 4 - Nordfjord & Loen

We start the day with some scenic cruising into Nordfjord, passing Hornelen, Europe’s highest sea cliff, early in the morning. The fjord run offs from Jostedalsbreen, Europe’s largest mainland glacier, and flows west into the ocean just south of the Stadlandet peninsula.

Day 5: Day 5 - At Sea

northern lights cruise from dover

Day 6: Day 6 - Svolvaer & Lofoten

Lofoten

There are just a few places on Earth where you can sail north of the Arctic Circle in wintertime. The Norwegian coast is one of them. The ship will officially cross over the Arctic Circle sometime in the morning. To mark the occasion in the tradition of Norwegian sailors, we’ll be inviting you out on deck for a special ceremony. Exactly what happens is something you’ll just have to find out on your cruise!

Day 7: Day 7 - Narvik & Ofoten

northern lights cruise from dover

Day 8: Day 8 - Alta

Alta - Norway - body of water

Alta lies in the vast wilderness of Finnmark county, well above the Arctic Circle at 70 degrees north. Welcome to the turning point of your expedition and to one of the northernmost towns in the world with a population over 10,000. We’ll arrive here in the early afternoon and plan to stay past midnight to stargaze and watch for the aurora in Alta’s usually clear skies. The town is directly beneath the Auroral Oval, a zone known for consistent Northern Lights activity. If the heavens aren’t overcast, and the conditions are right, you might well be in for quite the show…

Day 9: Day 9 - Tromso

Tromso Arctic cathedral

It’s time to explore Tromsø, capital of the Arctic. But before we do, we’ll be on the watch for humpback whales out on deck or in the Explorer Lounge. Families of these gentle giants are known to frequent the winter waters here, feeding on the abundant herring. The Expedition Team will also be on the lookout and alert you to any sightings.

Day 10: Day 10 - Reine

Reine- Norway

In the morning, we dock into the picture-perfect fishing village of Reine back in the Lofoten Islands. This is where red-painted rorbuer cling to a string of islands beneath sharp granite mountain ranges. The 450-metre tall Reinebringen is one of the most distinctive peaks, particularly dramatic when layered with snow. The combination of setting and colour makes Reine one of the most photographed landscapes in all of Norway. You’ll be hoping the Northern Lights are active above the village when we are there, completing the composition of your own photo of this piece of paradise.

Day 11: Day 11 - At Sea

Part of being on an expedition is knowing how to enjoy the moment; taking time out to reconnect with nature and the world around you. So, settle into a sofa in the panoramic Explorer Lounge or soak in a hot tub out on deck, sit back and simply take in the serene scenery that rolls quietly by. We’ll be passing through the Vega archipelago today, made up of some 6,500 islands, islets, and skerries.

Day 12: Day 12 - Kalvag, West Coast Island

northern lights cruise from dover

We welcome you to the little fishing village of Kalvåg, situated far out on the coastline with the open North Sea to the west. Its name literally means ‘Frozen Bay’ in the Old Norse. This probably gives you an indication that it isn’t always possible for our ship to make a landing here and that it does depends on the local weather and sea conditions at the time.

Day 13: Day 13 - Mosteroy, South West Island

Stavanger

Your final day of exploration begins as we arrive at Mosterøyand Klosterøy in the morning, two of the myriads of islands that lie around the city of Stavanger. The islands are relatively exposed to the sea and so our going ashore here will be decided based on how kind the waves and wind are on the day.

Day 14: Day 14 - At Sea

Your expedition is fast coming to an end. By this stage of your journey, you’ll have made friends with your fellow explorers, finding that you have much in common in terms of your interests and passion for nature. You can spend time chatting with them over a snack at the bistro-like Fredheim, perhaps recalling the best moments of your expedition together. northern lights cruise from dover

MS Maud, previously MS Midnatsol, is named after one of the most famous polar vessels of all time, Roald Amundsens “Maud” from 1917. The ship is being refurbished with it being completed in 2021 in time for this voyage. The ship has been redesigned to make it ideal for expedition cruises with it equipped with advanced technology.

The ship’s design has been kept in line with the Scandinavian design that is associated with the classic Hurtigruten feel. MS Maud features natural Scandinavian materials like granite, oak, birch and wool, to create a relaxed and stylish atmosphere.

On board is the interactive Science Centre where can get involved with the learning tools and state of the art technology. You can see the work that the Hurtigruten team are doing to allow us to enjoy travel sustainably. For spectacular views, the outdoor Observation deck or the Explorer lounge and bar are the places you need to be.

Hurtigruten as a company focuses on sustainable travel and is the core of their business. They want to encourage us to the see the world without causing disruption to the wildlife and natural habitat of the areas. As a result, the company’s aim is to be completely emission free. As the first cruise line in the world, Hurtigruten is permanently introducing biodiesel as fuel on a number of ships – including MS Maud.

Biodiesel reduces (CO2) emissions with up to 80 % (compared to regular marine diesel). Hurtigruten’s environmentally certified biodiesel is produced from waste from industries such as fisheries and agriculture – which means no palm oil is used in the biofuel production and no negative effects on rainforests. Hurtigruten will use biodiesel in combination with other low-emission fuel. Single use plastic is also banned on all the Hurtigruten fleet. It is also equipped for shore power, completely eliminating emissions when docked in ports with shore power facilities.

Hurtigruten really does come into its own with its on-board Expedition team. Passionate and experienced about all things Expedition Cruising and seeing the places off the beaten track, the team host lectures, presentation programmes and activities on a regular basis.

Features at a glance:

  • Expedition Team
  • Three restaurants
  • Explorer bar lounge
  • Fitness room

MS Maud Itineraries

Ms maud review, review of ms maud.

The 2004-built (as "MS Midnatsol") cruise ship MS Maud is the third and last of three Millennium-class Hurtigruten ships, together with Finnmarken (Otto Sverdrup) and Trollfjord (Eirik Raude) .

In 2021, Hurtigruten added 4 old ships to the company's expedition fleet/Hurtigruten Expeditions - Spitsbergen (2009), Midnatsol (2003), Trollfjord (2002) and Finnmarken (2002). This fleet also includes Fram (2007) and the 3 newbuilds - Roald Amundsen (2019), Fridtjof Nansen (2020) and TBN (2021).

Following an extensive drydock refurbishment and refit , in January 2021 the Hurtigruten Midnatsol ship will be renamed "MS Maud".

The vessel (IMO number 9247728) is currently Norway- flagged (MMSI 258595000) and registered in Tromso .

IMPORTANT: In May 2024, HX/Hurtigruten Expeditions announced that MS Maud would be transferred to the company's ferry fleet and renamed (Midnatsol) and reflagged from NIS (Norwegian International Ship Register) to NOR (Norwegian Ordinary Ship Register). Midnatsol will replace MS Vesteralen on Hurtigruten's Coastal Express Route (Bergen-Kirkenes-Bergen) in the period November 2024 through December 2025.

History - construction and ownership

The shipowner Hurtigruten is a Norwegian passenger shipping company specializing in cruise and ferry services. The "Norwegian Coastal Express Route" ( Bergen - Kirkenes ) is a cargo-passenger ferry service along Norway's western and northern coast. Hurtigruten's cruise ferries sail nearly the entire length of Norway and complete this roundtrip itinerary in 11 days. The route also includes Lofoten Islands and Vesteralen Islands .

MS Midnatsol cruise ship

The 1000-passenger ship Midnatsol was inaugurated in April 2003 with a maiden voyage along the Norwegian coast. The vessel's initial name (Midnatsol) means "Midnight Sun". Accordingly, its interior design was celestial-themed, colorful and with numerous modern Norwegian artworks on display throughout the vessel. Together with MS Trollfjord (sistership) Midnatsol (now Maud) is one of the newest in the Hurtigruten fleet. This is also the 4th cruise ship to be named "MS Midnatsol" since the Hurtigruten's establishment in 1893.

MS Maud is named after the Roald Amundsen-owned ship Maud (1917-built, acquired by HBC-Hudson's Bay Company in 1925, 1930-sank at Cambridge Bay / Victoria Island, Nunavut Canada). The original Maud ship was named after Queen Maud of Wales (1869-1938) - Norway's first Queen as the spouse of King Haakon VII (1872-1957, in reign since 1905). The namesake in the Hurtigruten's fleet was the 1925-built ship DS Dronning Maud ("Queen Maud"). Queen Maud was the youngest daughter of Edward VII (1841-1910, King of the UK and the British Dominions and Emperor of India / reign 1901-1910) and Alexandra of Denmark (1844-1925).

Decks and Cabins

MS Maud staterooms (262 total/reduced from 301 on MS Midnatsol) in 13 grades. The Midnatsol ship had 23x Suites, 213x Outside and 61x Inside, in all 11 grades. Cabin sizes vary from 9 m2 (100-ft2 Inside and Outside) to 45 m2 (485-ft2 Owners Suite with Balcony).

The ship has a total of 4x Outside wheelchair-accessible cabins (category YA-Accessible, sized 16-17 m2) all located midship on Deck 6 (near the elevators). All handicap cabins are at double occupancy (sleep up to two people per room), with a double bed (alternatively two lower beds or lower-upper bunk beds) and specifically designed for passengers with disabilities.

The boat has 9 decks , of which 7 are passenger-accessible and 3 with cabins.

Most Midnatsol-Maud staterooms are Outside and sized 10-11-12-14 m2. The largest accommodations are the Owner's Suites (Deck 8). Standard cabin amenities include en-suite bathroom (WC-shower, single-sink mirrored vanity, heated floors, towels, bath products), smart HDTV (Internet capabilities), direct dial phone, lounge area (writing desk, chair, wardrobe, coffee/tea making facility / kettle, glasses), under-bed storage, wall-mounted reading lamps, smart HDTV, electronic safe box (in the closet), 220V plugs. All rooms are air-conditioned. Suites additionally have a coffee maker, lounge area (low table, modern armchairs, 2-seater sofa).

The ship's max passenger capacity (970) is limited to 500 on Antarctic voyages. Following the drydock reconstruction in 2021, the boat's max capacity will be reduced from 631 to 532 berths (beds).

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

MS Midnatsol features various dining venues. Dining in the main restaurant is relaxed and informal. All menus are planned around seasonal fresh ingredients and benefit from local produce to satisfy guests' healthy appetites stimulated by the sea air. The 24-hour cafe offers drinks and snacks. There is also a selection of lounges and bars with drinks available.

  • The a la carte Restaurant Grill & Food Court was a 24-hour open cafeteria with a la carte priced menu (for snacks, hot meals, beverages). It served mainly local (ferry) passengers, who use the Midnatsol ship as a port-to-port ferry boat. MS Maud Wiki

Midnatsol cruise ship (the name means "Midnight Sun") joined Hurtigruten's fleet in 2003 as sister to  Trollfjord . It is the fourth Hurtigruten ship to bear this name. One of the previous namesakes was the Lindblad Expeditions ship  National Geographic Explorer . The Midnatsol ship boasts colorful decor, Norwegian modern art collection on display, a 2-story panorama lounge above the bow, as well as large glass expanses which allow natural light to enter and provide extraordinary views.

Fun fact is, that in August 2004, the "Hurtigruten 365" series was recorded by the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation aboard MS Midnatsol. The result was 20 episodes shown on television.

MS Midnatsol cruises along Norway's coast. Some use the vessel as transportation (ferry). Other are cruise passengers booking the full 12-day roundtrip itinerary. Departing from Port Bergen , the ship sails to Port Kirkenes  roundtrip. This is an Arctic outpost near Russia's border, stopping at uniquely picturesque 34 ports along the way. Norwegian coastal cruise passengers can opt for 5-11 nights stays, with the full 12-day sailing from Bergen to Kirkenes, then going back southbound. In most ports of call are offered Hurtigruten-sponsored excursions and tours. A ceremony "Crossing the Arctic Circle” welcomes newcomers.

On Hurtigruten Norwegian coastal voyages, the company offers flight-cruise package deals. Bookings are protected with ATOL Certificate. ATOL stands for "Air Travel Organisers' Licensing" (Civil Aviation Authority, UK).

The next table shows MS Maud's Maiden Voyage in 2021. The 12-day itinerary was themed ""Remote Islands, Natural Wonders and A Diverse Coastline". Prices started from ~GBP 3500 / ~EUR 3800 / ~USD 4500 per person (with double occupancy).

A Guide to Hunting Russia’s Northern Lights in Murmansk

Home / Russia Travel Experiences / A Guide to Hunting Russia’s Northern Lights in Murmansk

Where can one experience the northern lights in Russia ? Where is Murmansk in the Kola Peninsula? What are the optimal conditions for finding the Northern Lights in Murmansk, Russia? What else to do in Murmansk during the day? How do I get to Murmansk (Kola Peninsula) from Moscow or St. Petersburg?

There are many wonders in nature, but few are as awe-inspiring as the Northern Lights in Murmansk. Otherwise known as the Aurora Borealis, this phenomenon has brought travellers from all over the world for an unforgettable experience. With the help of this guide, we can ensure that you get the most out of your experience hunting for the Northern Lights in Murmansk, the Kola Peninsula .

Table of Contents

Where is the Kola Peninsula and Murmansk?

The Kola Peninsula is a Russian Region in the North of the Arctic Circle. It is close to the border between Finland and Norway. Murmansk is a small port city in the northwestern area of this region and one of the best places to view the Northern Lights.

Kola peninsula map

What is the best time for Northern Lights in Murmansk?

Hunting for the Northern Lights in Murmansk entails elements of preparation and probabilities but there is also an element of luck. While you can never be 100% sure of sighting the Northern Lights during your stay in the Kola Peninsula there are certain times and areas that will infinitely increase your probability of seeing the lights.

Predicting the appearance of the Northern Lights has always been something of a dark art, but there are some general rules of thumb to follow. Being on the lookout between 8pm and 2am from mid-September to mid-April is critical, preferably from within the Arctic Circle (latitudes between 64 degrees to 70 degrees north should do it) to maximise your chances. The best season to visit Murmansk in order to enjoy winter activities during the day and Northern Lights hunt during the night is January-March.

To prevent the hunt for Russia’s Northern Lights from becoming complete guesswork, we partner with the Polar Geophysical Institute (PGI) in the Kola Peninsula. The PGI uses satellite technology to check for the possibility of Northern Lights appearing. Upon getting a positive confirmation, they search for a place with clear skies and inform us accordingly.

Here you will find some awesome tips to get the most of photographing your experience of the Northern Lights.

What to do in Murmansk while hunting for the Northern Lights?

Want to experience everything Murmansk has to offer while hunting the Northern Lights? Murmansk is known for its incredible biodiversity with its endless forests and tundra, crystal clear lakes and fast-flowing rivers.

1. Explore the city

northern lights cruise from dover

Murmansk is the northernmost city in Russia, with a population of around 300,000 people, by far the largest city above the Arctic Circle. An important Russian naval base, Murmansk served as a port for the Arctic convoys during WWII. Spend a day to explore the city’s main attractions, such as:

  • Lenin Nuclear Icebreaker . It is not only a historical ship – the first nuclear powered civilian vessel – but it also serves as a museum. It is one sight in Murmansk you will not see anywhere else in the world.
  • Alyosha Monument . Also considered the “Monument of the Defenders of the Soviet Arctic during the Great Patriotic War” which commemorates those who defended the port of Murmansk during the war.
  • Northern Fleet Naval Museum . Its exhibits include models of ships, artifacts, and exhibits of Russia’s first Navy and WWII convoys, and a photo collection of Franz Josef Land .
  • Regional Museum of Local Lore . The oldest museum in the area, this museum includes everything from minerals and geology to the wildlife, local lore, history, and economy of Murmansk.

2. Get some adrenaline on a snowmobiling excursion

northern lights cruise from dover

Travel up to Kirovsk at the foot of the Khibiny Mountains and go on a snowmobiling adventure while traveling through rugged mountain regions and beautiful tundra. In the evening, if the conditions are right, you may even be led home by the lights of the Aurora Borealis.

3. Enjoy amazing skiing and snowboarding

What to do in Murmansk Northern Lights Russia

Skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing and other winter activities are popular in Murmansk and Kirovsk. One of the most famous is Big Wood . Nine T-bar lifts, chair lifts and gondola lifts take you on top of the mountain with slopes on both sides. One lift reaches the height of 1047 m, where you can ski down a 2300m slope.

If you aren’t fully equipped for snow sports when you reach Murmansk, you can rent ski and snow equipment from the resort.

4. Be mesmerized by the ice sculptures at the Snow Village

northern lights cruise from dover

The Snow Village has been painstakingly constructed almost entirely out of ice and snow and features ornately decorated buildings, sculptures and labyrinthine tunnels with intricately patterned rooms, walls and corridors. This enchanting place is the work of true artists and a chance to open your imagination to the magical spirit of winter.

Note: Snow Village operates only from 25th of December until 25th of April.

5. Feed a reindeer at the Saami people tourist center

northern lights cruise from dover

In addition to giving you a fair chance of glimpsing Russia’s Northern Lights, this area offers travellers the option of experiencing the rich culture of its indigenous Saami people. The Saami are local reindeer herders who are dependent on reindeer for most of their livelihood. You can even try your hand at reindeer herding and develop a deeper understanding of the Saami traditions and culture.

6. Go husky dog-sledding

northern lights cruise from dover

Alternatively, you can go husky sledding, visiting a farm just outside of Murmansk. You can feast upon a traditional meal before going sledding along specially prepared routes through the snow. You will get a sense of all of the huskies personalities as companionable and fun-loving dogs who have endless stamina to pull you and your sled through the snow.

7. Explore the shores of Barents Sea on a day excursion to the famous Teriberka village

Northern Lights Murmansk tour Russia Kola Peninsula Teriberka

Located on the shore of Barents Sea, 120km, three hours’ drive down an icy road from Murmansk, this small village has just 617 residents and a wide selection of picturesque abandoned houses that could serve as art objects or as a set for horror films. In 2015, thanks to the Oscar-nominated drama movie “Leviathan” from producer Alexei Zvyagintsev, Teriberka village became more known in Russia and also abroad.

During the tour of the village, you will stop at several locations, such as a wooden ships “cemetery”, which is older than 100 years and started from Imperial times. Then, we head to the Arctic Ocean coast for the weird and wonderful photos of frozen rocks and tundra against the mighty Barents Sea, and a magnificent waterfall that flows into the Arctic Ocean.

8. See the Northern lights from a glass igloo

northern lights cruise from dover

Enjoy starry nights under the Northern Lights at the glass-igloo. Located on the way to Teriberka village, right on the Arctic Circle, each of its glass-domed rooms offers cosy beds, cosseting fur throws, en-suite bathroom and even a small kitchenette. But it’s the view that steals the show, with snowy forests and the lakes frozen waters looked down upon by starry skies and, if conditions are right, the green swirls of the Northern Lights.

How to get to Murmansk?

Getting to murmansk from moscow.

Getting to Murmansk from Moscow can be achieved by a direct flight taking about two and a half hours while overland travel by train can be anywhere upwards of 35 hours. For those who are used to total luxury, the northern lights can be discovered on an epic train journey to the Arctic regions of Russia .

Before you set off on your adventure to the Northern Lights in Murmansk, make sure you allocate a few days to explore all Moscow has to offer . Travelling in winter is when this cold city turns itself into a snow-covered wonderland which gives the city its unique character.

At the top of every tourist must-see list for Moscow sits The Kremlin, Saint Basil’s Cathedral and The Red Square all of which are steeped in Soviet history. Delving into the luxurious end of this destination, you can find the highest concentration of billionaires around the globe leading to an array of experiences you are unlikely to find anywhere else.

Getting to Murmansk from St Petersburg

Your other main option for getting to Murmansk to see the Northern Lights is from St Petersburg . A direct flight to Murmansk will take a little under two hours. If you feel as though you would prefer to take an overland route a direct train would take around 22 hours.

If you want to experience everything on the way to your hunt for the Northern Lights, you can look at this immersive tour taking you all the way up to Murmansk via Karelia and its accompanying in a nature park to see resplendent waterfalls and marble quarries, while also stopping off Kizhi island via a hovercraft ride.

There have been few occasions where the Northern Lights have been seen as far down as St Petersburg but unfortunately, these instances are few and far between. However, if you have some extra time to spare in what is sometimes referred to as the ‘Northern Capital’ of Russia, you will be rewarded with the cultural experience of a lifetime.

This city is renowned for its collection of artwork from the State Russian Museum to the Hermitage museum. You could alternatively treat yourself to some theatre or ballet from the Mariinsky theatre or even strolling the UNESCO heritage listed historic centre of town.

Where to Stay in Murmansk

There are plenty of hotels in Murmansk, our recommendation are the following:

Azimut hotel 4* Park Inn by Radisson Polyarnye Zory 4* Boutique hotel Renaissance 3* Congress Hotel Meridian 3* Eco home

Weather in Murmansk

Murmansk has relatively mild weather for how far north it is. In the winter weather is usually around -10 degrees Celsius. Polar nights (24-hour darkness) occur from December 2 – January 11. Polar nights are a natural phenomenon that occurs at latitudes to the north of the polar circle. In northwestern Russia, the circle passes through the southern part of the  Kola Peninsula  and part of  Karelia . At Murmansk’s latitude, polar nights last about 40 days, while the phenomenon lasts half a year at the  North Pole .

Even though the sun remains below the horizon, the Russian Arctic is not blacked out completely. On clear days, you can see beautiful sunset colours in the south while the sky to the north is a deep midnight blue.

Enjoy your tour in Murmansk

So head for the snow-white serenity of the Kola Peninsula, where the Saami have herded reindeer for generations, go husky sledding throughout the tundra and go snowmobiling through the Khibiny mountains. All of this can be done on your hunt for the Northern Lights in Murmansk .
