What to wear on a cruise: Cruise attire and cruise line dress codes
Editor's Note
Have you ever had that nightmare where you're at work, in school or giving an important presentation only to look down to discover you're only wearing underwear (or worse, nothing at all)? If you're new to vacationing at sea, knowing how to dress for a cruise can be confusing and just as potentially embarrassing if you're not prepared.
Packing acceptable attire for a cruise is simple if you remember a few general rules. Here, I'll break down some safe options if you're unsure, and I'll give an overview of the cruise dress codes for each of the "big eight" cruise lines.
What do people wear on a cruise?
You can't go wrong with resort-casual clothing for sea days when you'll remain on board your ship. Although some lines will be more or less casual than that, it's a good baseline. What is "resort casual" though?
Khaki pants or shorts with loose-fitting, short-sleeved button-down shirts or even nice, plain T-shirts work well for men. Women might opt for khaki shorts or palazzo pants with a nice top or a sundress. In most cases, nice jeans (dark wash with no holes) will also work well.
On most ships, this clothing will also be acceptable at night in the main dining rooms. For extra-fee restaurants, you might choose to dress up a bit more. Collared shirts or long-sleeved button-downs are acceptable for men, and slacks with a blouse or a dress for women are acceptable.
For formal nights, which are optional on many lines' ships, men will want to bring a collared, button-down shirt at the bare minimum. For something a little more snazzy, bring a jacket to wear over your shirt, with or without a tie. Some men opt for suits or tuxes. For women, pantsuits and dressy pants outfits are a great choice, as are party dresses or even ball gowns.
Although most lines have eased dress codes on formal or "elegant" nights, jeans are generally not allowed in the main dining rooms. Cut-off shorts, baseball caps and flip-flops are banned at all times — not just on formal nights — during dinner in the main dining rooms.

Another key piece of clothing to bring is a bathing suit. Whether you're headed to a warm-weather destination and plan to laze by the pool or on the beach, or you're visiting somewhere chilly but want to take advantage of your vessel's hot tubs, it's an item you won't want to forget. Note that cover-ups are required for entry at all restaurants and dining rooms, with the exception of walk-up poolside window-service venues.
For shore excursions — particularly those in more rugged or active destinations that require a lot of walking — comfortable, casual clothing and sturdy footwear are a must. Bring layers for cold climates and moisture-wicking fabrics for places where it's warm or where you expect to work up a sweat.
Finally, check to see if your cruise line has any special theme nights planned. If so, you might want to pack an outfit for the white party or '80s night.
Carnival cruise dress code
Carnival is one line where casual is the name of the game. Passengers will be fine in jeans, T-shirts, tank tops, shorts and bathing suits for their days on board or ashore.
At night, nice jeans and nice tops are perfect for eating in the main dining rooms.
On Carnival cruise formal nights, known as "cruise elegant" nights, cruisers wear everything from slacks with nice shirts to tuxes and ball gowns. However, most passengers stick to clothes that fall somewhere in the middle.
Voyages of six nights or longer will have two "cruise elegant" nights, while those five nights or shorter will see only one.
Celebrity Cruises dress code
Celebrity Cruises maintains a dress code that's best described as chic-casual. The demographic on board tends to be a bit more upscale than what you'll find on Carnival, Royal Caribbean or Norwegian. That means khaki shorts with nice button-downs are more common than jean shorts and tank tops, although you won't be out of place in the latter.
For dinner, you'll want to dress it up even more, as the line has a smart-casual dress code at night in most restaurants, including the main dining room. Anything from unripped jeans to dress pants with nice blouses or button-downs is acceptable.

Are there formal nights on Celebrity cruises? Yes, the line holds one "evening chic" night on every sailing of six nights or fewer and two on voyages of a week or more. The dress code encourages passengers to go all-out with tuxes and evening gowns. However, most men choose slacks with collared or button-down shirts and jackets, sans ties. Most women choose slacks and nice blouses, sundresses or party dresses.
Disney Cruise Line dress code
Disney Cruise Line is synonymous with children, and children like to be comfortable. With that in mind, just about anything goes in terms of dress on The Mouse's ships. These cruises tend toward casual in spite of their stellar service and high price point.
It's not uncommon to see jeans, shorts, T-shirts or bathing suits during the day. Unlike most other lines, the same goes at dinnertime, with jeans and T-shirts just as common as dressier attire like slacks and button-downs.
Exceptions are the line's "dress-up" nights — two on sailings of a week or more and one on shorter voyages. For those, DCL suggests that men avoid jeans and wear jackets. Women should go with dresses, skirts and blouses, or pantsuits.

Some of Disney Cruise Line's added-fee restaurants, such as Remy — one of the most expensive alternative eateries at sea — require jackets for men and don't allow jeans.
Each Disney sailing features a Pirate Night; cruisers wishing to participate should pack their best swashbuckling gear. As is standard at Disney parks, you're also likely to see large numbers of costumes and mouse ears at all hours of the day.
Holland America Line dress code
Although the dress code on Holland America ships is technically "cruise casual," you'll rarely spot anyone looking disheveled or like they just rolled out of bed. Most passengers tend toward resortwear or, at the bare minimum, nice jeans with pressed T-shirts.
The casual dress code carries through to dinner, but HAL cruisers often dress up a bit more. This includes collared shirts or button-downs (sometimes with jackets) and slacks for men and slacks with nice tops or dresses for women.
As for Holland America formal nights, on sailings shorter than a week, there will be one "gala night," during which travelers don evening or ball gowns, suits or tuxedos. Voyages of eight to 13 nights will see two gala nights, while any cruises of two weeks or longer will have three chances to dress to the nines.
MSC Cruises dress code
What to wear on MSC cruises largely depends on the crowd with whom you're sailing. On European cruises, your fellow passengers are likely to dress up more often — even during the day; skimpy resortwear and designer bathing suits often grace the pool deck as far as the eye can see. On those voyages, dinner is an even more fancy affair, with elegance as the norm. Expect to see glittering dresses and stylish pants and button-downs with dress shoes, even when it's not a formal night.
On cruises that depart from the U.S., expect a more casual vibe, with jeans, T-shirts and bathing suits ruling the day. At night, you'll be fine with nice jeans and a collared shirt or a sundress, although you might want to dress up a bit more to match the ship's ambience.

Are there formal nights on MSC cruises? Absolutely. They're called "gala dinners," and they appear at least once per voyage, but the number can vary by itinerary. The dress code is strict, with the buffet the only place that will allow T-shirts and shorts. You'll fit in best in a ball gown, cocktail dress, suit or tuxedo.
Norwegian Cruise Line dress code
Norwegian , which pioneered the concept of "freestyle cruising," prides itself on allowing cruisers to dress as they please, providing a "come as you are" atmosphere during the day and at night. The most popular clothing is cruise casual, and passengers are free to wear whatever they'd like with an emphasis on comfort.
The only exception is at dinner, when a smart-casual vibe encourages travelers to avoid torn clothes or suggestive or skimpy outfits.
In a nod to Norwegian's laid-back style, NCL formal nights — dubbed "Dress Up or Not" nights — provide a chance for you to get dolled up. However, it's not required, and you won't be turned away from the main dining rooms if you choose not to participate. Passengers have been spotted wearing everything from jeans and T-shirts to ball gowns and tuxes, and all coexist in perfect harmony.
Princess Cruises dress code
Princess ' casual daytime mindset means you can wear the same types of clothing on board as you would during a day ashore — activewear, beachwear and jeans or T-shirts are totally fine.
Princess' formal nights are special because the line is one of the few industry holdouts in that it still has an official formal night. Its passengers enjoy a more traditional cruise experience, and they relish the romantic vibe that a formal night can provide. With that in mind, the line doesn't mention super-fancy garb like ball gowns or tuxes; instead, it advises suits or slacks with jackets for men and cocktail dresses or pantsuits for the ladies.
On voyages of less than a week, passengers should plan for one formal night, while sailings of a week to 13 days will have two, and cruises two weeks or longer will have three.
All other nights are listed as "smart casual." This means sundresses or pants with flowy tops for women and nice jeans or slacks with collared shirts for men will suffice.
Royal Caribbean dress code
As is the case with Carnival and Norwegian, Royal Caribbean is a casual line during the day. Like Disney Cruise Line, it caters to a lot of families. Translation: Wear what allows you to have the most fun in the most comfort. Expect to see shorts or jeans with T-shirts or tank tops and bathing suits or beachwear almost exclusively during the daytime.
At night, you might want to put on something a little less comfortable, but it's certainly not required unless it's a formal night. (Like Princess, Royal still has those.) The confusing part is that the line has three different dress codes, all of which are loosely enforced: casual, smart casual and formal. The ones that show up on your voyage will depend on the length of the cruise.
The only difference between the first two is that smart casual recommends pantsuits for ladies and jackets for the guys, but skirts or trousers with blouses or collared shirts are fine in both cases. Smart casual also strongly discourages jeans — even nice ones.
Royal Caribbean formal nights have the highest expectations for passengers, urging them to wear their finest cocktail dresses, evening gowns, suits or tuxes. As with the line's smart-casual dress code, jeans are not allowed in the main dining rooms on formal nights.

Understanding Cruise Attire Etiquette
Daytime apparel.
When deciding on daytime attire for your cruise, opt for casual and comfortable pieces that are suitable for various activities on board. Light and breathable fabrics like cotton or linen are excellent choices to keep you cool in the daytime sun. A couple of casual outfits with mix-and-match options can be versatile for different daytime occasions. For example, pairing shorts or capris with blouses or polo shirts can create effortless daytime looks that are both practical and stylish. Don’t forget comfortable footwear like sandals or boat shoes to complete your daytime ensemble.
Evening Wear Guidelines
Evenings on a cruise often call for slightly dressier attire, depending on the designated dress code for the night. For formal evenings, consider elegant options such as cocktail dresses or dressy pantsuits for women and suits or dress shirts with trousers for men. Semi-formal nights might require smart-casual outfits like dressy skirts or slacks paired with blouses or button-down shirts. It’s essential to consult your cruise ship’s specific guidelines regarding evening dress codes to ensure you are appropriately attired for each night’s events. Remember to include accessories like scarves, jewelry, or ties to elevate your evening look.
How to Pack for a Cruise
Maximizing space and versatility.
When packing for a cruise, maximize your suitcase space by following a capsule wardrobe approach. Choose versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched to create a variety of outfits. Opt for items like a classic pair of dark wash jeans, a neutral skirt, or a white button-down shirt that can be dressed up or down as needed. By selecting dual-purpose clothing, you’ll have more outfit options while taking up less space in your luggage.
Considering Cruise Duration
Consider the duration of your cruise when planning your wardrobe. For a shorter cruise, focus on creating a few key outfits that can be worn multiple times with different accessories. On longer cruises, aim for a broader selection of clothing to keep your looks fresh throughout the trip. Think about the activities you’ll be engaging in each day and pack accordingly, ensuring you have appropriate attire for excursions, onboard events, and relaxation time. By planning ahead based on the length of your cruise, you’ll be prepared for any occasion that arises.
Outfits for Daytime Activities
When it comes to daytime activities on a cruise, dressing appropriately is key to ensure you are comfortable and stylish throughout the day. Here’s a breakdown of the ideal outfits for different experiences onboard and during shore excursions:
Exploring the Ship
As you set out to explore the various amenities and activities on the cruise ship, opt for casual yet functional attire. Consider wearing light and breathable clothing, such as a pair of shorts or a sundress matched with a comfortable t-shirt. Don’t forget to bring along a hat and sunglasses to shield yourself from the sun while out on the deck.
For footwear, a pair of comfortable walking shoes or sandals are essential to keep you comfortable as you move around the ship. Sneakers or flats are great options for exploring different decks and facilities onboard without worrying about discomfort or blisters.
Shore Excursions and Port Visits
When venturing out for shore excursions and port visits, it’s crucial to dress appropriately for the activities planned. If you’re going for a city tour or cultural visit, opt for smart casual attire, such as a pair of trousers or a skirt paired with a nice blouse or shirt. Comfortable walking shoes are a must to navigate through different terrains and explore historical sites or local markets.
For more adventurous excursions like hiking or water sports, make sure to pack activewear like moisture-wicking t-shirts, leggings, or shorts. Don’t forget to bring a light jacket or a windbreaker in case the weather changes unexpectedly.
By planning your outfits accordingly for daytime activities on a cruise, you can enjoy your adventures comfortably and in style, ready to make the most of every moment during your voyage.
Dressing for Cruise Evenings
When preparing your cruise wardrobe, evenings on board can offer a mix of casual and formal affairs. Below are some tips for navigating your evening attire seamlessly.
Casual Dinner Outfits
For casual dinner settings on your cruise, opt for smart-casual attire that strikes a balance between relaxed and stylish. Think of outfits that are comfortable yet slightly dressier than daytime wear.
- Men could consider tailored trousers paired with a polo shirt or a button-down shirt. Women might choose a maxi skirt with a blouse or a nice top with trousers.
- Practical Advice:
- Mixing separates like blouses, skirts, or trousers can help create different looks without overpacking.
- Addressing Questions:
- What is smart-casual attire? It typically involves a blend of casual clothing with more formal pieces, suitable for dinner in a relaxed setting while maintaining a touch of sophistication.
Formal Night Attire
Formal nights on cruises call for elegant attire, often aligning with the ship’s dress code. These evenings provide an opportunity to dress up and enjoy a more upscale dining experience.
- Men may opt for a suit or tuxedo, paired with a dress shirt and dress shoes. Women could choose a cocktail dress, gown, or evening pantsuit.
- Check the cruise ship’s guidelines on formal attire to ensure you meet the required dress code.
- What constitutes formal attire? Formal wear typically includes tailored suits or tuxedos for men and evening gowns or elegant cocktail dresses for women.
By planning your cruise evening outfits with consideration for both casual and formal options, you’ll be ready to enjoy the varied settings and dining experiences onboard.
Theme Nights and Special Event Outfits
What to wear for themed parties.
Theme nights on cruises are fun opportunities to dress up according to the party theme. You’ll want to pack some versatile pieces and accessories to create different looks for these special occasions. For a tropical or Hawaiian-themed party, colorful floral shirts or dresses paired with sandals can make you stand out. If the theme is 1920s Gatsby style, think about donning a glitzy dress or a sharp suit with a fedora to channel the timeless elegance of the era. Remember to check the cruise itinerary or event schedule in advance to prepare your outfits accordingly.
Dressing for Special Events on Board
Cruise ships often host special events like captain’s dinners or cocktail evenings that require specific attire. For formal night dinners, opt for an elegant evening gown or a tuxedo for a sophisticated look. Smart-casual events may call for a cocktail dress or a button-down shirt with dress pants. To add a touch of glam, accessorize with statement jewelry or a stylish tie. Planning ahead and packing the right outfits for these special events will ensure you’re dressed to impress and fully enjoy the onboard festivities.
Navigating Weather and Climate
Tropical cruise wardrobe essentials.
When preparing for a tropical cruise, lightweight and breathable clothing are key to staying comfortable in warm and humid climates. Opt for pieces made from cotton, linen, or moisture-wicking fabrics to help you stay cool and dry. Pack items like flowy sundresses, linen shorts, breathable tops, and swimwear for lounging by the pool or enjoying tropical beaches. Don’t forget to bring a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun’s rays. These essentials will keep you stylish and comfortable while exploring exotic island destinations.
Preparing for Cooler Destinations
For cruises to cooler destinations or during the evenings when temperatures drop, layering is essential to stay warm and stylish. Pack versatile pieces like cardigans, light jackets, scarves, and long pants that you can easily layer over your outfits. Opt for fabrics like wool or fleece for added warmth without bulk. A stylish trench coat or a cozy wrap can be perfect for cooler evenings onboard or during shore excursions in temperate ports. Be prepared for changing weather conditions by packing a mix of lightweight layers that you can easily add or remove as needed.
Top Accessories for Your Cruise Wardrobe
Footwear for Comfort and Style
When it comes to cruising, selecting the right footwear is key to enjoying your vacation comfortably. Opt for versatile shoes that can transition from day to night effortlessly. For daytime exploration and excursions, choose supportive sandals or sneakers that offer both comfort and style. These options will keep you comfortable while walking around the ship or exploring ports of call. In the evenings, consider packing a pair of elegant flats or dressy sandals to complement your evening outfits. This way, you can effortlessly switch from casual daytime activities to more formal evening events with the right footwear.
Essential Accessories for Day and Night
Accessories play a crucial role in elevating your cruise outfits from ordinary to exceptional. During the day, consider practical accessories like a wide-brimmed hat to protect you from the sun while lounging by the pool or exploring sunny destinations. A stylish pair of sunglasses is also a must to complete your daytime look while shielding your eyes from the glare.
For evening events, opt for elegant accessories that add a touch of glamour to your ensemble. A statement necklace or a pair of sparkling earrings can instantly elevate a simple dress for a formal night onboard. Remember to pack a versatile clutch or small evening bag to hold your essentials while adding sophistication to your evening attire.
By selecting the right footwear and essential accessories for day and night, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy your cruise in style and comfort, no matter the occasion. Choose pieces that complement your outfits and enhance your overall look throughout your vacation.

Women’s Clothing for Cruises: Simple and Affordable Outfit Ideas
Looking for some women’s clothing for cruises inspiration?
As a former cruise ship crew member, frequent cruise guest, and expert at living out of a suitcase– I’m here to break it all down for you so that you don’t have to stress out before your vacation.
I know how challenging packing for a cruise can be, but it doesn’t have to be!
In this post, I’ll go over different options when it comes to cruise wear for women, clothing ideas for different cruise itineraries, and tips on how to pack as minimally as possible.
For easy pre-cruise outfit shopping, you can find most of the items in this post on my Amazon Storefront .
Planning Women’s Clothing for Cruises Tips
In the last 10+ years, I’ve traveled to and worked in all seven continents (including working in Antarctica and living at the South Pole !) and over 60 countries by living out of my suitcase, including working on cruise ships .
When you get a job on cruise ships , you’re limited in how much you can bring.
In fact, I’ve seen cruise guests pack more for a weeklong vacation than what cruise ship crew members pack for a 5-9 month contract!
Now after working at sea for three years, I’m a chronic one-bagger, or carry-on only girl when it comes to cruise vacations.
I’ve got a full post on how to pack for a 7-day Caribbean cruise in carry-on only if you’re also interested in packing light for your trip.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Michelle | Work + Travel (@wandereatwrite)
Some things to keep in mind when packing for a cruise are:
🌤 Destination and climate: Hot/cold, humid/dry, rainy/windy, etc.
🛳 Length of cruise and number of ports: How many sea days and port days
👙 Activities: Beach lounging, city exploring, hiking excursions, etc.
👗 Color Palette: If looking put together or fashion is your thing, consider planning your cruise outfits around one color palette to minimize how much you pack. This way everything you bring will coordinate with each other.
By planning what clothes to bring on your cruise around these factors, you should be able to pack light and not have to worry about multiple pieces of luggage.
Travel Day Cruise Outfit
If you’re traveling from one extreme climate to another for your cruise, it can be difficult to figure out what to pack while keeping luggage light.
Ideally, your travel outfit will be something you can wear again on the cruise, like a t-shirt or tank top under a button-down linen shirt paired with linen pants or shorts .
Pictured: Lightweight button-down , cropped sleeveless top , linen pants , sneakers
💡 TIP: Worried about re-wearing clothes on a cruise or not having laundry access? Look into clothing made from merino wool , which keeps clothing fresher for multiple wears.
But if you’re escaping a freezing winter for a Caribbean getaway, my trick is to wear a packable parka along with warm leggings that can be worn under a lighter set of pants or maxi skirt .
Leggings pack down very small yet add a layer of warmth under bottoms you can still use during your cruise.
You can also use your leggings for working out on the ship.
Once you arrive at your embarkation port, the jacket can also be easily squished down to fit into your luggage.
Embarkation Day Cruise Outfit
For embarkation day, make sure to wear something comfortable as traveling to the port, going through security, and getting on the ship is quite the process.
Pictured: Lightweight button-down , one-piece swimsuit , linen shorts , sandals
A couple of things to keep in mind for embarkation day:
1. Staterooms often aren’t available until early afternoon.
This means that if you arrive prior to that (around 1-2 pm), you’ll have to wait in the public areas.
So plan on relaxing, getting a bite, and make sure you either bring or wear your bathing suit under your embarkation day outfit so that you can enjoy the pools!
2. If you have your bags brought onto the ship for you, you may not receive your luggage right away.
As a crew member, I’ve seen guests sometimes get their bags well past sailaway.
This is all to say– take a second look at your outfit for embarkation day!
You’ll want to make sure you’ll be ok wearing what you have until your luggage arrives at your stateroom.
💡 TIP: Wearing bottoms with pockets is a must for me so that I have quick and easy access to my phone (which holds the onboarding details/QR code) and passport.
Women’s Cruise Outfits for Casual Evenings
The first evening onboard is usually casual, as well as most port evenings and the final night of the cruise.
So if you’re not sure what to wear on cruise ships for women during low-key nights, the answer is whatever you want!
There’s no pressure to get dressed up for these evenings, so if a pair of jeans and a t-shirt are your thing, go for it.
Pictured: T-shirt , sundress , sleeveless bra top , maxi skirt , sandals , linen pants
Cruisers who like a slightly more elevated look for casual nights don’t have to worry too much either as a few simple pieces can complete the look:
▶️ White Tee : A must-have when packing minimally as it goes with ✨everything✨
▶️ Tank Top : Bonus if it has a bra built in like this one from Uniqlo .
▶️ Maxi Skirt : Pairs great with a staple white tee or tank.
▶️ Linen Pants : Looks elevated yet beachy and slight wrinkles look the part.
▶️ Sundress : Find one with a bright floral pattern and this can be also be worn in ports or for the ship’s Caribbean-themed evening.
Sea Day Cruise Wear for Women
Sea day mornings and afternoons are casual, usually with a lot of time spent lazing on the open decks, partaking in ship activities, and even working out for some.
You’ll want to make sure you have a variety of clothing ready for all of these occasions.
Pictured: Linen button-down , two-piece bikini , kimono cardigan , tank top , romper , shorts
My top faves include:
▶️ Bathing Suit and Cover-Up : Great for hanging around the open deck and pools
▶️ Linen jumpsuit or romper : fast-drying and breathable
▶️ Linen button down : Good for the strong air conditioning inside the ship (can also double as a cover-up)
▶️ Lightweight shorts : Bonus if they can be dressed up or down
▶️ Quick dry top and leggings : For working out or doubling as your travel day outfit
💡 TIP: If you’re cruising with Royal Caribbean and planning on trying out the Flowrider (surf simulator), make sure you have a t-shirt or rash guard to wear over a two-piece bathing suit to avoid any wardrobe malfunctions!
Formal Wear Ideas for Cruises
Formal/Elegant nights are my favorite as they offer the rare opportunity to break out that floor-length gown you’ve always wanted to wear.
But if you’re not into dressing up, don’t worry.
Many cruise lines are moving toward more casual evenings, and even when there are formal evenings, you’ll see plenty of people in shorts and tees at the buffet.
Pictured: [Top row L-R] one-shoulder cocktail dress , little black dress , dressy jumpsuit ; [bottom row L-R] two-piece set , infinity bridesmaid dress , full-length gown
Here are my top formal night clothing ideas for women:
▶️ Infinity/Multi-Way Jersey Dress : Two reasons I love this dress. 1) It can be worn multiple ways and 2) it’s made from jersey material which packs well and doesn’t wrinkle much.
💡 TIP: These are popular bridesmaid dresses, so you might have one already in your closet!
▶️ Little Black Dress : You can never go wrong with an LBD, and if you need to purchase one for your cruise, there’s a 100% chance you’ll be able to wear it again for a future event.
▶️ Formal gown : Perfect for more formal or luxury cruise line evenings.
▶️ Cocktail dress : If full-on floor-length formal gowns aren’t your thing but you still want to look the part, cocktail-length dresses are the way to go.
▶️ Two-Piece Mother of the Bride Pants Set : Another great way to reuse an outfit if you already have one from a former wedding, or just a good option if you prefer pants over dresses.
▶️ Dressy Jumpsuit : I love a good jumpsuit that can be dressed up or down. Any one piece automatically looks put together, so pair these with a set of heels and you’re set.
▶️ Statement Suit or Blazer : Another non-dress option that will keep you looking polished yet comfortable.
▶️ Shawl : We all know how cold the interior of ships can be, so a nice pashmina or shawl keeps you warm and elegant.
💡 TIP: If you bring clothing that requires ironing, make sure to send them in as early as possible on the cruise. This will ensure that there’s enough time for the items to be turned around and ready for you to wear on formal nights.
Cruise Theme Nights Outfits
No matter which cruise line or itinerary you choose, you’re sure to come across a fun theme night or two.
While it’s not mandatory to partake and dress for the events, here are some theme night outfit ideas if you do!
▶️ 70s/Disco/Flower Glory Party: Time to bust out your favorite tye dye tees, flared pants , or 70s hippie mini dress .
▶️ Caribbean: The easiest themed event to dress for using clothing you’d probably already be bringing for the cruise, like a floral maxi dress .
▶️ White Night: Most major cruise lines have some form of White Night or Party. This works great if white is already part of your cruise wardrobe, like a white tee or linen button-down. Pair them together with white shorts or trousers and you’re set!
▶️ Gatsby Night/ Roaring Twenties: These theme nights are all about flapper dresses , feathers, and sequins.
▶️ Scarlet Night: Wear something as simple as a red top or go all out in a red sundress .
What to Wear for Port Days on Cruises
What to wear for port days will depend on your cruise itinerary.
Some things to keep in mind when planning your port day outfits include:
- Activities: What you’ll be doing there (hiking, city exploring, snorkeling, etc.)
- Weather/Season: What the climate will be during your trip (windy, cold, sunny, humid, etc.)
Plan your outfits according to what will make the most sense for what you’ll be doing in port and what will be the most comfortable for the expected weather.
Caribbean Cruise
There’s a reason Caribbean cruises are so popular!
Most of the time, you get the best vacation climate and endless beaches to explore.
There are so many activities and excursions available on Caribbean cruises so how you choose what to pack for your cruise will largely depend on your plan in port.
Clothing suggestions:
- Two-piece summer linen set
- Linen pants
- Sleeveless shirt
- Lightweight shorts
- Shorts romper
- Summer boho jumpsuit
Mediterranean Cruise
The Mediterranean cruise itineraries were some of my favorites during my time as a crew member.
You’ll want to be prepared for hot temperatures in the height of summer, but also ensure that you have some modest clothing that covers your shoulders if you plan on visiting any religious buildings.
- Sleeveless bra top
- Lightweight or linen long-sleeve shirt
Baltic/ Scandinavia/ Northern Europe Cruise
Summer temperatures in this area can vary, but they typically aren’t as warm as Mediterranean cruises.
You’ll probably be doing a fair amount of city exploring so plan on having some layers as you walk around in port.
- Quick dry travel pants
- Short-sleeved tee
- Odor-free Merino long-sleeved tee
- Denim jacket
- Wind/waterproof jacket
Asia Cruise
I lived in Japan for a few years and enjoyed cruising around Asia.
The most important thing to remember when packing for these cruises is to double-check what the local customs are when it comes to clothing as some countries such as Japan are more modest than others.
If you’re cruising in the summer, it will be quite hot and humid outdoors, but indoor air conditioning tends to be quite strong.
- Dry-fit tees
- Odor-free Merino wool tops
- Quick dry travel pants or “elephant” pants
- Linen shorts
- Linen button-down shirt
- Breathable sleeveless dress
Arctic Circle/Greenland Cruise
My time on an Arctic Circle cruise and a Transatlantic cruise via Greenland was cold but not unbearable.
Surprisingly, it wasn’t as cold as I’d imagined it would be, but you still definitely want some warm clothing for days out in ports.
The coldest ports for me were: Honningsvag, Norway; Reykjavik, Iceland (due to wind), and Qaqatorq, Greenland.
Plan on doubling up your layers and you’ll be solid.
- Thermal underwear
- Fleece-lined pants
- Packable down jacket
Alaska Cruise
Layers are key for Alaskan cruises.
While my time in Alaska was spent in t-shirts, temperatures can also dip.
- Long-sleeved tee
- Waterproof rain jacket
- Fleece layer
Beach Women’s Clothing for Cruises:
One of the best parts of cruises is the warm days spent at idyllic beaches.
Make sure you’re prepared with the right outfits.
Pictured: Two-piece bikini , one-piece bathing suit , button down , beach cover-up , shorts , sandals
▶️ Bikini : No better way to work on your tan than in a two-piece!
▶️ One-Piece Bathing Suit : Stylish one-pieces offer the right amount of coverage on the beach and can also double as a bodysuit/top for another cruise outfit.
▶️ Rash Guard/Swim Shirt : These are great if you plan on being in the water for an extended period of time. Not only do they protect you from the sun, but you don’t have to worry about reapplying sunscreen every few hours.
▶️ Board Shorts : Perfect if you want a little more coverage.
▶️ Crochet Beach Cover-Up or Kimono : Everyone’s go-to uniform returning back to the ship after a sandy day in port.
💡 Tip: If you plan on doing any snorkeling on your trip, bringing your own snorkeling gear will be cheaper than renting.
Must-Have Women’s Cruise Accessories
▶️ Hat: Whether you prefer a baseball cap with a ponytail hole or a foldable wide-brim sun hat , make sure you have some extra protection from the sun.
▶️ Sunglasses : Keep your eyes safe and stylish at sea.
▶️ Beach Tote : A good packable beach tote is necessary for lazy afternoons on the sun deck or port days at the beach. Bonus points if it’s machine washable too.
▶️ All-In-One Makeup Palette : This is my go-to for travel makeup along with a 4-in-1 brush . It’s slim, easy to pack, and doesn’t require you to bring a whole cosmetic kit with you to the cruise.
▶️ Scrubba Wash Bag : Perfect for doing laundry in your stateroom along with these detergent sheets .
▶️ Compression Packing Cubes : A must-have for packing light and ensuring everything stays organized in your luggage. These cubes also compress your clothing so that you save room.
Women’s Shoes for Cruises
Packing shoes for cruises can be tricky.
On the one hand you want options for all your outfits, but on the other you have to think about luggage space.
As a minimalist carry-on only cruiser, I always aim for no more than two pairs of shoes:
- A versatile sandal that can be dressed down for beach/port days and dressed up for casual evenings on the ship
- A pair of heels that can go with all of my nicer outfits and formal wear
Here are some great shoe options for any type of cruiser:
▶️ Sandals : A light-colored pair of sandals will look good with lots of different outfits and can also be dressed up or down.
▶️ Sneakers : If you plan on doing a lot of walking in ports or working out on the ship, definitely plan on packing a solid pair of sneakers.
▶️ Flip-Flops : Lightweight and easy to pack– what’s not to like? If you tend to dress more casually, flip-flops are good to have on your trip.
▶️ Heels: Complete your formal evening look with heels. Whether you go for basic nude pumps or block-heel sandals , you can’t go wrong.
▶️ Flats : If heels aren’t your thing, flats are perfect for the ship and super versatile.
💡 TIP: Want more versatility in your shoes but also want to save luggage space? Check out these convertible heels that interchange with a range of heel heights and can also be worn as flats!
FAQ: Women’s Clothing for Cruises
Is it OK to wear jeans on a cruise?
Yes, it is ok to wear jeans on a cruise– around the ship, to the buffet, and main dining room.
Most cruisers dress casually, even on themed formal nights.
The only time jeans might not be appropriate are in specialty dining venues with a more upscale dress code.
If you’re unsure about wearing jeans on your next cruise, a dark washed pair without holes will keep your jeans from looking too casual.
Do you dress up every night on a cruise?
Not necessarily– for most cruise lines, you can dress as formally or casually as you’d like in the evenings.
While evenings might have a suggested dress code, you’re not required to take part.
There are plenty of cruisers who are dressed casually in the main dining room on formal night.
However, if you’re worried about not looking the part, you can always double check the dress code for the dining venues on your cruise (ex: buffet= casual, main dining room= semi formal, etc.)
Do people still dress up on cruise ships?
Yes, people still dress up on cruises.
While it’s not a requirement, it offers a fun opportunity to dress up and wear the clothes you don’t have the chance to in every day life.
How many evening outfits do I need for a cruise?
The number of evening outfits you need for a cruise will depend on the cruise length and if you plan on participating in formal/elegant evenings.
For most 7-day cruises, there are typically two formal nights.
If you want to wear a different outfit for each formal night, think about packing 2-3 outfits for the other evenings.
Will packing primarily dresses be ok?
If you’re most comfortable in dresses, then that’s what you should pack.
A cruise is your vacation; your time to relax and unwind, not stressing about packing.
You’ll be best off wearing what you normally wear in day to day life and what’s comfortable for you.
Final Thoughts: Cruise Wear for Women
Cruise wear for women doesn’t have to be complicated, you just need to plan it right!
Remember to keep in mind what activities you plan on taking part in– both onboard and in ports– so that you can plan your outfits accordingly with your destination’s climate.
Bon voyage!

Getting There
Get packed and ready to set sail on the Ultimate World Cruise.
T hough it's tempting to pack everything, cruise outfits are meant to be laid-back, so plan to wear a few items of clothing more than once — no one will judge you, promise. Pack a few key staple pieces that can be paired together in several different mix and match styles — this is called a capsule wardrobe. To ensure you can put together a great outfit each day, pack mindfully in one color palette or scheme — colors like red, coral and yellow will pop in pictures when photographed in front of a turquoise sea. If you're wondering what to pack for a five-day cruise, bring along six shirts, six sets of underwear, and three to four bottoms. Then, throw in at least two swimsuits, so you always have one dry. Finally, pajamas, a jacket or sweater, athleisure wear, a hat, sunglasses, sandals, athletic shoes, and dress shoes round out a perfect cruise outfit packing list.
Breezy fabrics like cotton and linen in a loose silhouette keep you cool and covered under the sun during the daytime, and with a few adaptable accessories, you can transition seamlessly into a polished evening look. No matter if you're spending your day sipping an ice-cold cocktail on deck, strolling along a sandy beach, adventuring on jungle trails or searching for local treats, these five versatile day-to-night cruise outfit ideas will make packing easy, getting you on island time, in no time.
1. Port-Day Wardrobe
If you'll be spending your port days shopping, dining, and exploring new cities and towns, you'll need cruise outfit ideas that are both stylish and practical. A flowy top or polo shirt, bright-colored capris or khaki shorts, comfortable shoes, sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat will keep you cool during the day. When the sun goes down, dress it up with a button-down shirt, shawl or cardigan.
2. Onboard Ensemble
For days spent at sea, you'll want cruise attire that's comfortable and convertible. A swimsuit underneath a sundress or flowy shirt and shorts is an outfit that will take you from the pool to the spa to the mini golf course and beyond. When it's time for dinner, swap your shorts for trousers and slip on dressy sandals or closed-toe shoes. If you're cruising with your kids, be prepared for spills and stains with an extra shirt.
Solid-colored board shorts paired with a button-up shirt (nautical print encouraged) work just as well for a day on deck. Then, change from swim trunks and flip-flops to chinos and dress shoes before heading to the onboard restaurant. A Panama hat adds an element of holiday luxe no matter the time of day.
3. Adventure Attire
The best outfits for a cruise are the ones you can wear all day long. If you have a list of adventure activities planned for your shore excursions, or if you'll be braving the ship's RipCord® by iFly® skydive simulator and Zip Line, pack accordingly. During the day, wear athletic shorts, a neutral-colored tank top, and sneakers or sandals. Don't forget a hat, sunglasses and a long-sleeved sun shirt in your day bag. Need to dress up for dinner? It's simple. Pack extra clothes in a tote bag in case you don't have time to go back to your stateroom. Swap your athletic shorts for a flowy skirt or trousers, and trade your sneakers for a more formal pair of shoes, like chunky heels or loafers for a put-together look.
4. Beach-Day Outfit
For many, a cruise vacation is all about spending as much time as possible in or near the sea. Maybe this means claiming a lounge chair as your own, seeking a spot in the sand without footprints or swimming out into the clear blue water. When you're done wading in the water or soaking up the sun, a cover-up like a romper, oversized shirt or dress is always a stylish choice for wandering local shops and grabbing a seaside lunch. Quick-drying swim trunks are the go-to staple for this cruise outfit and is a perfect choice for kids. Just throw on a collared shirt and slip-on penny loafers, and you're good to go.
For dinner reservations, add an air of tropical elegance with a pair of wide-legged linen trousers or chinos in a solid color, paired with a linen top in a colorful print and some timeless accessories like a gauzy scarf, dangling necklace, a sleek watch or large sunglasses.
Make sure your cruise packing list includes a lightweight bag for your book, sun protection, wallet, camera, phone and a foldable dry bag tucked inside. When you're done swimming, you can stow your swimwear away in the dry bag without getting the rest of your items wet.
5. Sightseeing Cruise Outfit
When trying to figure out what to wear on a cruise, it's important to plan ahead and know what your must-dos are for your cruise vacation. For long days jam-packed with historical and natural sights to see, pack fabrics that are breathable and comfortable. Linen pants and a good pair of socks and boots are invaluable for rainforest hikes, while a lightweight long-sleeve shirt and a sunhat with a drawstring will keep you covered when visiting ancient ruins. If you're packing outfits for a cruise destination in a warm climate, bring something that can be worn over a swimsuit, so you're always ready to take a dip in hidden cenotes.
When it's time to hit the town at night, add some accessories to soften this look like dainty jewelry, colorful slip-on shoes, a Panama hat and a handbag.

What to wear on a cruise – the cruise clothing essentials to pack
by Sylvia | 3 comments
Going on a cruise this season? Lucky you! It’s a great way to visit several destinations in one trip. But that can also make it tricky to decide what to pack. Below, we will show you what to wear on a cruise and which cruise clothing essentials you will need, This will ensure that you have everything you need for shore excursions and fun aboard the ship.
Rooms on board ships tend to be small with limited space. Although, the big advantage is that, even though you are traveling to multiple destinations, you only need to unpack once! Your accommodation is also your mode of transportation.
But, you will still want to plan your outfits carefully and pack pieces that you can wear in multiple ways so you don’t take up vital cabin space.
Below, you will find our list of what to wear on cruise and what to pack to set sail for sunny destinations in style. But first, some general tips when thinking about what to pack for your cruise vacation.
Is it okay to wear jeans on a cruise?
Should you take your trusty jeans on your cruise? Yes, denim is definitely acceptable in most situations, although think about how much room it will take up in your case. You can wear denim shorts during the day, and you’ll probably be able to wear your jeans in the evening. Just check the dress code for your cruise line as some don’t allow jeans in the dining room at night.
What colors should you wear on a cruise?
Anything goes when it comes to your choice of colors. Make sure that you think about how your clothes will go together to create different choices. Have fun with your color combinations. And, we’d avoid too many dark colors as they go ‘against’ the fun element of a cruise.
Do you still have to dress up on cruises?
Some cruise lines do still have a dress code for diner, so be sure to check. Plus, dressing up is one of the fun things about a cruise. It’s a great excuse to make an effort with your evening outfits.
what to wear on a cruise – Your cruise packing list
Below is what we recommend taking along for a cruise trip. Take a look for your what to wear on a cruise packing essentials.
Cruise dresses for day and night
Dresses don’t take up much space in your luggage, and are vacation workhorses.
A dress can take you from brunches and lunches on board and can easily be dressed up or down with a change of shoes.
If the weather is warm or humid, a dress can be worn alone or paired with a jacket or lightweight sweater when it turns cooler at night.
Wear your dress with comfortable gladiator sandals or stylish slip on sneakers in a metallic hue.
Pack at least one stylish maxi dress and a sundress in a shorter length.
Cruise essential – Maxi dress or jumpsuit
A maxi dress or jumpsuit can be perfectly laidback, or more formal, depending on the cruise you are going on.
Choose one which you can sling over your swimsuit after a day at the pool so that you can head to the bar for cocktails.
You can pop a cardigan or wrap over for evenings.

what to wear on a cruise – a Versatile sundress
As well as a maxi dress, you will want an easy-breezy knee-length or midi style that you can wear for days on board as well as for sightseeing excursions.
Choose a dress that you can easily pop over your swimwear, but which will also take you from day to night.
A dress in a light fabric will be perfect. You can wear over your swimsuit, or for sightseeing with sandals. Or you can dress up with heels for evening. You can also wear over pants for a different look.
Polo Ralph Lauren Ivara Floral Puff-Sleeve Midi-Dress
Evening dress for cruise formal night
If you’re thinking about what to wear on cruise and what to pack, consider that most cruise have formal nights. Depending on the cruise line, it can be anywhere from an elegant dressy affair to a more casual dinner and cocktails.
Pack two dinner outfits if your cruise is a week, so you’ll be prepared. As well as a cocktail dress, We’d be tempted to pack a jumpsuit as these can easily be dressed up or down. A black dres s will go with everything and you can easily change it up with accessories to create different looks.
J.Crew A-Line Matte Jersey Midi Dress
What to wear on a cruise – Tops
I’d keep the tops you choose, like the rest of your cruise outfits, very versatile.
Opt for tops you can either dress down for day, or dress up with jewelry and heels for evening. Also, choose tops which you can wear either with pants or shorts, or over your swimwear as cover-ups.
A T-shirt (or more) is essential no matter where you are going. The Caslon T-shirt (below), will add interest to your daytime outfits, and could be dressed up with wide leg pants or a midi skirt for evening.
Caslon Twist Hem V-Neck T-Shirt
A tunic top is the ideal choice as you can pop over your swimsuit for days onboard, but you can also wear over your shorts or pants for days spent ashore sightseeing. You can leave loose or tuck it in to create different looks.
Natori Barong Gradient Tunic
When thinking about what to pack for a cruise, a shirt is so useful for your trip. You can wear over your shirts or pants, you can tuck into jeans or a skirt, or you can wear over your swimsuit as a cover-up.
120% Lino Linen Buttoned Shirt
If you’re cruising somewhere warm, you may want to opt for some sleeveless tops. Tank tops can be worn with your shorts, pants or skirts, or are useful for layering under your shirts, or you can always wear as pajama tops. The J.Crew tank top (below) features a bra shelf for extra support.

Day to night top
Choose a top that will go with your shorts during the day and that you can elevate at night with a statement necklace. If you choose a top in a beautiful material or with some draping, you can easily dress it up or down.
Ramy Brook Sabrina Surplice Tie Top
What to wear on a cruise – pants and shorts
When considering what to wear on a cruise, think about the weather. If you’re going for sunny locations, it’s highly recommended you bring shorts. On most cruises, you’ll be going ashore to explore ports of call. Pack a pair of stylish crop pants or shorts to wear for sightseeing.
Choose pants or shorts you can move comfortably in. You probably want to avoid denim as this isn’t the coolest fabric in hot weather.
cropped pants
A pair of pants will also be a hardworking staple of your cruise wardrobe. Choose a cropped pair to keep your ankles cool. You can wear it with your t-shirt and sandals or sneakers for the day, or you can dress up with a silky top and heeled sandals for the evening.

What to pack for a cruise: Shorts
A pair of shorts is a must for casual days on the ship and for excursions. Choose a pair that is mid-length so you have enough coverage but is also cool.
The J.Crew chinos (below) are a good mid-length, and come in a choice of neutral shades.

Kylie @kylish_aus above chooses a classic shorts and shirt outfit and makes sure to protect her face and eyes.

Packing for a cruise – Swimsuits & cover-ups
Pack at least two swimsuits for your trip, so you can rotate them in case the other is wet. There’s nothing worse than having to put on a wet swimsuit.
Choose cover-ups which you can wear not just over your swimwear, but also as tops and dresses.
You will want more than one swimsuit as you will want to be in a position where you can rinse one out and leave it to dry, and wear the other one.
We’d make one of your swimsuits a classic black or one color style as you can wear it under any cover-up you choose, or you can wear it with shorts or pants instead of a top.

You could also opt for a tankini. That way you can wear the bikini bottoms with the rashvest below or the tankini top.

If you might be spending some time swimming, snorkeling or paddle boarding, you’ll want to make sure that you don’t get sunburned. A rash vest can protect your chest and arms from UV rays. The rashguard swimsuit (below) comes well-reviewed with wearers saying it is a flattering fit, and you can leave it slightly unzipped for a sexier look, or fully zipped for more coverage.
Trina Turk Solar Floral Half Zip Rashguard Swimsuit
Choose a hardworking cover-up that you can pop on over your swimsuit, or wear with your pants as a top.
You might also wish to pack a longer cover-up. Depending on your ports of call, this could be useful if you are visiting any religious sites such as temples and you need to cover your knees and shoulders.
Elan Wrap Maxi Cover-Up Dress
Depending on the style of cover-up you choose, you can wear it over your swimwear, or as a duster jacket on cooler evenings. The Farm Rio sarong (below) would look good over your bathing suit.

What to take on a cruise – jackets, Wraps & cardigans
If you are heading to a tropical destination, you may think you don’t need warm clothing. But, you are likely to want a wrap or cardigan (or both) for cooler evenings on deck, and because you will find that much of the ship is air-conditioned.
short jacket
A short jacket can be an incredibly flattering choice to wear over your maxi dresses as it can make your legs look long in comparison to your torso. The Mother denim jacket (below) comes in a pattern that will make your denim jacket stand out.
Mother The Mountain Drifter Geometric Denim Jacket
Kimba @kimbalikes above chooses pink denim with her cargo pants.

You can wear your wrap over your shoulders with your evening dress, or slung over your daywear if it’s chilly on deck.
Nordstrom Shimmer Wrap
A cardigan is also a versatile option. You can wear over your dresses as well as if you have a plane journey to and from your first and final port.
Cara Cara Bettina Stripe Cardigan
4 pairs of cruise shoes to pack
It may seem like a lot, and we agree as usually we’d recommend only packing 3 pairs of shoes for most vacations.
However, for a cruise, it’s useful to have a pair of pool shoes you don’t mind getting wet, some smarter flat sandals, a pair of comfy sneakers for walking on excursions, and a pair of low heels to go with your evening dress. And, your flat shoes won’t take up much room.
Choose a pair of stylish, yet comfy sandals which you can wear for walking around your ship and for days offshore which don’t require too much strenuous walking.
TOMS Sidney Tread Sandals
Flip flops are always handy to have, and they don’t take up very much room in your luggage at all. Slip on after your swims on the ship.
Tory Burch Miller Soft Sandals
Excursion sneakers
You may find that some excursions require more walking than others. Perhaps you are hiking to a waterfall, or walking up steps to get to a fabulous view. I’d pack either some comfortable canvas slip-ons or walking shoes.
Dolce Vita Zina Sneakers
Low heels for evening
Even if you don’t tend to take heels on vacation with you, when you are cruising, you are likely to find that there is an eveningwear dress code. Your heels will go well with your formal evening dress.
Make sure to opt for block heels because these are much easier to walk in while you’re at sea than thinner heels like stilettos or kitten heels and they won’t damage the deck.
Opt for a lower or block heel. Really high heels on a swaying boat can be difficult to walk in or dance the night away in.
Vionic Chardonnay Ankle Straps Heeled Sandals
Nikki @midlifechic above shows how you could wear flat sandals with your evening dress.
Recreate her outfit with this similar halter dress (anther option here ), sandals (another option here ), clutch and necklace .

Cruise outfits – Accessories to pack on a cruise
Accessories can make or break an outfit anywhere, and the same applies to a cruise. But, they can be even more vital on vacation.
You will want a sun hat to protect your head and face from the sun, a pair of sunglasses to add style and protect your eyes, and a crossbody bag which you can keep your purse secure in when you leave the ship for excursions.
If you’re heading to sunny climes, a hat is vital to protect your skin and your eyes. You can wear while reading your book by the pool, and for sightseeing. Choose a style with a wide brim to keep the sun off your face.
The straw hat (below) is ideal for packing for a trip, and it comes in a wide choice of colors, so you’re sure to find a shade that goes with your cruise trip capsule. Reviewers say it looks great on everyone, and it holds its shape well.
Lanzom Wide Brim Straw Panama Hat
Excursion bag
Take a small crossbody bag to hold your essentials.
Select a bag that works with your daytime casual outfits and is large enough to easily hold your cell phone, passport, money cards and sunscreen – keeping everything safe and secure if you are heading out on a shore excursion.
Your excursion bag will have to be hardworking. You want to make sure it is stylish, but that it will keep your belongings close to you.
The Travelon anti-theft messenger bag is a favorite among travelers.
Also take a look at our article on the best travel purses .
Travelon Anti-Theft Crossbody Bag
Slip a small evening clutch into your luggage. It won’t take up much room but will make your outfit evening-ready. Make sure it’s large enough to hold your cellphone and lipstick.
Olga Berg Amalia Pleated Woven Straw Clutch
beach or tote bag
A tote bag is useful so you can pack a towel and your book for going ashore, or a tote if you just want to carry your essentials around the boat.
Longchamp Le Pliage Green Recycled Canvas Large Tote
You probably don’t want to take anything too valuable when considering what to pack for a cruise, but a few well-chosen pieces can make a big difference to your cruise outfits. Plus, they won’t take up too much room in your luggage, or your cabin.
A statement necklace or earrings can dress up an outfit to get you ready for a drink at the bar.
Lizzie Fortunato Interval Cultured Pearl Collar Necklace
BaubleBar Macaw Me Beaded Statement Drop Earrings
Just as your sunhat is important for both protection and style, your sunglasses will protect your eyes and add some pizzazz to all of your daytime outfits. Choose a color that will go with all your outfits.
Loewe Stella 52MM Acetate Sunglasses
Tamera @tamerabeardsley above (read her style interview here ) chooses an all-white outfit, and a wide-brimmed hat to shade her face from the sun.
Check out this similar off the shoulder top , pants , flats , woven bag , sunhat , earrings and sunglasses .
cruise essentials
As well as your outfits, you’ll want to pack some essentials into your suitcase.
No matter where you are traveling, sunscreen is a must to protect your skin from sun damage. Reviewers say the Neutrogena sunscreen (below) goes on sheer and can be worn under make-up.
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Water Resistant and Non-Greasy Sunscreen Lotion
Mosquito repellent
You probably won’t need insect repellent while onboard your cruise as the ocean breeze will keep mosquitos away. But it’s useful to have for any excursions.
OFF! FamilyCare Mosquito Repellent IV
It can get breezy when you’re cruising, so to make sure your towel stays on your sunlounger, a couple of beach towel clips can be handy.
12 Pack Clothes Pins
your kindle
You can download all your reading material on your Kindle rather than carrying bulky books around with you. You can add guidebooks to the destinations you will be visiting as well as novels to read by the pool. The Kindle Oasis (below) is metal rather than plastic, and waterproof in case you splash it while by the water.
Kindle Oasis
something to put it in
Of course, you’ll need something to pack your cruise clothing in. The TUMI suitcase (below) is well-reviewed and should be easy to roll up the gangplank.

Cruise attire – 9 cruise outfits to inspire you
If you’re thinking about what to pack for a cruise this year, I hope these outfits inspire your cruise packing list and help you experience a wonderful ship bound vacation.
You can see that you could easily change the outfits around to create more looks. For example, you could wear the striped cardigan over the red dress, the gold wrap with the sundress and heels for evening, or the tie top with the shorts or cropped pants.

I have been cruising for 10+ years with a group of women friends. My capsule consists of at least 2 swimsuits and dedicated cover-ups (don’t want suntan lotion stains/smells on a top I’m going to wear again). I bring a black skirt and black pants with 2-3 tops for regular dinners, and one dressy top/dress for formal nights. One outfit for an excursion (mostly we go to beach clubs, so swimsuit/cover-up works for that). Flip flops, low heels, sandals (we don’t do excursions requiring heavy walking), 1 pair of each. A crushable sun hat. A caftan for wearing in the room and a tee shirt/yoga pant for breakfast. All my clothes fit in an under-seat (rolling) carry on bag. Toiletries and one of the cover-ups/swimsuits to change into once on the ship go in a tote that becomes my beach bag and fits over the handle of my carry on.
This is a wonderful line-up of possibilities. And not only for on a cruise.
Hello Sylvia I been following your blog for a while now and I am a FAN and share it with all my “over 40” friends. I was missing these kinds of posts where you suggest outfits for different occasions or seasons. Your club is fantastic but not affordable to me so I really enjoy these kinds of posts and not only interviews (which are nice too). Keep them coming, éxito! Miss Manners: Can I wear clothes with my old company’s logo?

DEAR MISS MANNERS: I am a CPA who will be retiring in 2025 after 36 years with my employer’s firm. Over the years, I have acquired several tops, sweaters and jackets imprinted with my firm’s logo. They are all in good condition and I enjoy wearing them. After my retirement, is it appropriate for me to continue wearing these items, as I believe I have earned the right to do? Or should I offer them to other women in the firm when I leave?
GENTLE READER: Military establishments, airlines and other institutions in which the clothing confers authority are fussy about donning the uniform when you no longer work there. But companies usually issue sweatshirts to promote the brand -- not to terrify the enemy -- so Miss Manners sees little reason not to wear them into retirement if you wish.
