A trophy walleye is 27 + inches, many are caught and released every year between 27 and 30 inches, that's 7 to 10 pounds - but better still their are bigger walleyes yet that are caught every year over 30 inches - the biggest walleyes for the season are in this class and range from 10 to 14 lbs+.

Fly-In Walleye Fishing Trips: When to Come

The opener in May to the end of September the variety of structures, deep and shallow waters as well as both clear and dark waters is the perfect environment for a very healthy walleye population - you can come on up and hammer the walleyes when you want to.

16 foot Lund boats with 20hp four stroke motors with electric start will get you to where you want to go quickly but still troll down to a slow even pace, which is very effective for catching lots of walleyes.  The type of motors is also selected because they will run at a troll all day without fouling up like 2 stroke motors. They are also more fuel efficient than 2 stroke motors and friendlier for the environment.

Walleye is great eating and the fish here is 100% organic.  Fresh walleye tastes so damn good and its good for you. Shore lunch is a great experience and all of our cabins have kits with pots, pans, racks and utensils as well as propane cookers and fuel ready at the boat dock.

Trophy Walleye Fishing

Walleye fishing is nothing short of spectacular on Sydney and Kilburn Lakes. Years of conservation fishing and the policy that all trophy sized fish are to be returned has kept this fishery very healthy and a thrill to experience. The fish are here, come and catch them there's lots of em and there big.

All natural, there is no stocking on our lakes the high quality fishery is as nature made it, we are near the headwaters of our lakes and river system and there is no upstream development and never was, that means no pollutants - it also helps to have a remote location and a very long standing conservation policy.

Spring Trophy Walleye

Catching massive trophy walleyes in the spring is exhilarating with that cold water and extra fight.  The best  results over the years have beet from two methods.  The first is crank baits - think rapallas and rattle traps. both casting and trolling often where the shallow water meets the deep. When you have some good action in a spot try a few casts with a rapallla towards deeper water.  The second method is to go big and go deep -  try 1/2oz to 1 oz jigs with large baits in 25 to 30 feet of water throw on big double tails of the largest rubber worms you got. Jig it and troll it 25-100 feet (make sure the depth is not more than about 35 feet) from where the break to deeper water is.

Canadian Walleye Opener

The Ontario Walleye Opener for 2024 is on the Saturday the 18th of May. The ice goes out on Sydney Lake on the average year between the 25th of April and 10th of May. During the walleye pre-spawn, spawning and post spawn the fish populations are the most concentrated that you will see all year.  The date of the opener is set to coincide with the approximate completion of walleye spawning - and is when the "bite" really gets on.  The camp is open on the day before the walleye opener on Friday.  Fly-in on Friday or Saturday morning  - you pick the time and get prepared for the morning of the first day of the season.

Walleye Spawning

The walleye spawn soon after ice out, when the water temperature warms to about 40F.  Pre-spawn walleyes hang out in about 25 to 30 feet of water and move shallower to spawn. Walleyes are the last fish to spawn and will travel to upstream areas including creeks and bays.  There they look for rocky or gravel areas to lay their eggs. Walleyes from all over the lake will concentrate in the best spawning areas such as Mineral and Hansen's Bays and have the heaviest concentration of fish in the 3 to 10 foot depths.  Not all fish spawn at the same time - the spawn is spread  out as water temperatures range from 40F to 45F.  The peak spawning time each day is from dusk until midnight.  As dark water warms quicker than clear water, and shallow - faster than deep, the walleyes will be in different stages on different parts of the lake.

May Walleye Fishing Tips

Fishing Walleyes in May the first thing you want to know is what's the water temperature? The magic number that you are looking for is 50 F.  That's the temperature where the walleyes really become active.  The water temperature difference between the camp and dark shallow bays is often about 10F. Since weather can very from year to year and affect ice out times a few tips will make it faster to get good action fast.  Pre spawn walleyes are found deeper at 25-30 feet. They will be close to streams and rocky areas.  The fish will be in large concentrations and feeding actively, jigs and crank baits work best.  During the spawn the fish pack into shallower water usually at the end of the day - evening fishing works best - look to work the edges of incoming creeks and shallow areas where new cabbage is starting to grow.  Wind direction can affect water temperatures in bays and inlets and remember to check the temperature a few feet below surface as there may be a significant difference in just a couple of feet. After the walleyes have spawned they are really hungry - they must replace all the energy that they have expelled, and are packed in heavy concentrations.

June Walleye Fishing Tips

When you take your first spring walleye fishing trip to Sydney Lake you will be hooked. Sydney Lake has over 120 miles of Shoreline including numerous dark water bays. This is where the action starts in the spring. The walleyes spawn in early may after ice out. After they have spent all that energy, they are hungry. I'd like to point out a couple of my favourites. Mineral and Tranquility bays at the north end of Sydney Lake are quite shallow and both have creeks running into them, this is perfect conditions for spring, these bays teem with walleye in June and into Early July. These are great places for 50 to 100 or more walleyes per day. I got to tell you it makes your arms sore. Hansen's Bay is another Hot spot, there is a large flat area when you enter the bay, beside a small island. the question is how fast can you catch them. another great spot is Boot Lake. in years with high water (most years lately) you can drive your boat up a wide creek from the entrance of Bottle Bay to a narrow rock cut and into boot lake (no portage). In the creek at the bottom of the rock cut and at the far end by a small waterfalls. Boot Lake has dark water and its shallow. The water heats up fast and in late May and Early June this makes the walleyes active, especially in the early evening. At the waterfall it is fun to cast one way and get a walleye and the other for a Pike. Oh yeah - there's big ones in here too. We can mark these and many more spots on your waterproof lake maps along with great Northern Pike, Lake Trout and Shore lunch spots.

More Spring Walleye Fishing Tips

Spring walleye fishing is usually quite shallow with depths of 3-8 feet on average. Make sure you check the water temperature as this is key to predicting the walleye activity - 50F - 53F is where you want to be. Protected bays, creek mouths and small lakes like Boot Lake are the most active. The trick to catching lots of walleyes is to keep your line in the water - this means quick release of the fish - barbless or pinched barbs work best. Single hooks only and a handful of jigs is your best bet. You can catch fish after fish here for hours as long as you keep your line in the water and stay on top of the large schools. 1/8 to 3/8 oz jigs are recommended with minnows, twisters or other artificial baits.  Anchoring is recommended while jigging or try trolling in tight circles with spinners. All you do to find the fish is to start to troll down the shore - all of a sudden - WHAM you get one, then your partner, and again and again. This is when you stay put - fish hard and enjoy. July Walleye Fishing Tips

July walleye fishing starts off the same as June, hard action in shallow water. Dark waters start to warm up fist and depending on weather conditions and water temperatures, the walleye start their transition to structure, sunken islands, deeper water, and faster moving water. Some spots like the narrows into Kilburn Lake remain hot with the walleyes shallow throughout July. The water is dark here but the current brings in lots of baitfish. Walk 200 feet across the portage to Rowdy Lake (especially on a clear calm afternoon), fish from shore below the falls and watch the fish attack your bait. During July and into August the Walleye action heats up and Trophy Fishing gets better. There is a great reef in the West Arm of Kilburn Lake that has shallow water on one side and deep on the other. on "the break" is where the walleyes.

August Walleye Fishing Tips

For Trophy Walleyes August is the best Month. The Walleyes have made their transition to deeper water and reefs are the kings of Trophy Walleyes. The Finger Reefs, The Gap and Blood Brothers Islands are prime examples. They are located a few minutes from camp on Sydney Lake. The finger reefs and reefs off of Blood Brothers Islands fall into deep water fast. The best thing is the size of fish that you catch, fish after fish. The Gap Is an interesting area as it is the Wide mouth of the Sturgeon river where it flows into Sydney Lake. The Gap is a ridge that gets as shallow as 5 feet is the size of three football fields and has deep water on both sides. 80 feet deep on the river side and 200' on the lake side. 15-22 feet deep here is the sweet spot with structure (drop offs) the best places. The best depth to fish is 18 -25 feet. jigging, drifting and trolling.

More Summer Walleye Fishing Tips

July and August walleye fishing when most trophy walleyes are caught. The transition happens sometime in early to mid July and depends on temperatures and weather patterns. In July the fish move to deeper waters 12-18 feet. Reefs and structure off shore and islands offer the best results. The walleyes are still in large schools at this time and may "come up to feed " into shallower water at dusk. If its a windy day the fish may be pushed into shore on the windy side of a bay or deep on the calm side. Pink and white as well as gold and orange and chartreuse are the best colors. Jigging in the morning and evening and back trolling with spinners during the day. A depth finder can be helpful to stay on top of a school and to find the breaks and structure. We have depth finders available at the camp. On bright days on the main lake you can spot the walleye schools, so polarized sunglasses are a must. The biggest trophy walleye come off of big water on sharp cuts, sunken islands are best fished "on the cut" where the depth suddenly drops off. With the average depth of Sydney Lake being 65 feet there is lots of Walleye action at deeper levels too. Fishing humps that are 50 feet deep can often be filled with walleyes as well as Lake Trout. The best times of day to fish are mornings until about 1:00pm and evenings after 5:00pm. A good strategy is to fish mornings and evenings and relax or go swimming during the afternoon. It gets dark about 10:30 in early July and about 9:30 in late August.

September Wallleye Fishing Tips

September Walleye Fishing is nearly the same as august with the fish Deep at 15-30 feet and flats and narrows heat up. the chute through the islands to the south side is a great example. This is a narrows between 8 and 25 feet deep with deeper water on the south side. The walleyes sit on the flats on on the cut waiting for a meal. During the last week of September the Fall fishing is a blast with spots like this you can catch walleye, pike and lake trout in one spot, I mean you don't even need to move 10 feet to catch them. About 1000 yards from the narrows in Kilburn is another spot, this is a large flat area near a large island 22-26 is where the fish are at, back trolling real slow, even into the wind works best. At the end of the West Arm of Kilburn is one of my favourite spots, there is high cliffs here and several islands. Fish off of the rock cuts and in the narrows between the islands and shore. There are three fabulous shore lunch spots to use here in a small area with fantastic views.

More Fall Walleye Fishing Tips

Fall fishing is a little different, follow these guidelines for maximum results. First get deep and on the bottom. the best average depth range is 18-25 feet. Drift slow or back troll slow. Slow moving targets are best. Pink and white 1/4-1/2 oz jigs and a good sensitivity rod. Lift your rod slowly when you feel a bite and give it a good tug to set the hook when you feel the weight of the fish is there. A depth finder can be helpful to spot areas with lots of fish - but don't be fooled walleye often sit right on the bottom and might not register on your depth finder.

Walleye Fishing Techniques

The best walleye fishing tip is that walleyes are usually found on or near bottom. Jigs and spinners with twisters, artificial grubs or minnows works best. Now let me give you some really good walleye fishing tips. First the walleye are found at the bottom- not in it. Drop your bait to the bottom, bounce it a couple of times, lift it an inch or two off the bottom, now sit tight for a few seconds. Its this action that will attract the fish and cause them to bight. I have literally caught thousands of walleye using this technique. sometimes the fish are not right at the boat, they are a few feet away. Now is the time to cast. Cast 10-30 feet away to where the fish are let the lure sink to the bottom, when it hits let it sit there for a second, then reel in a couple of cranks, then let it sit again. This slow start and stop retrieval gains excellent results. It is perhaps my favourite technique and usually combine it with the first technique when the fish are active. This information can be quite helpful especially if your group is having a walleye fishing tournament.

Walleye Fishing Equipment

The right walleye fishing equipment can help you catch more fish. Fishing rods should be medium or medium light action and from 5 to 6.5 feet long with good sensitivity. Fishing reels recommended are open face but some prefer bait caster reels. A fairly stiff rod with good sensitivity gives you good control for setting the hook.

Jigs - Likely The Best Walleye Lure Ever Made The best walleye fishing lures are a mixture of round head jigs in sizes 1/16 through 3/4 with the majority being in the 1/8th to 3/8 ounce weights. Colors include plain, orange & chartreuse, orange, pink & white, yellow, white, pink, red and black. Jigs can be used with all live bait or twister tails. Use as light a line and weight as possible for best results. Use heavier weights on windy days. Get these babies to the bottom and bounce them there - that's where the walleye are. Crank baits The Rapala Original Floating Minnow, the Husky Jerk, and the Shad Rap work best. The Shad Rap is possibly the best producer of trophy walleye . Walleye Spinners Little Jo's and lindy rigs work best. Blades in all the hammered such nickel, gold, copper. Chartreuse, orange, pink, yellow, and combination metal / colored. Vary the sizes. These work best when trolling. tip them off with a minnow or twister tail. These fishing lures should be a staple of your fly-in fishing trip to Sydney Lake Lodge.

WALLEYE FISHING IN NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO

One of North Americas’s favorite species, the walleye is as fun to catch, as it is tasty to eat; nothing says Canada like a lakeside shore lunch of pan fried walleye.

The season opener for walleye on Lake of the Woods falls on the 3rd Saturday in May to allow them time after ice-out to successfully spawn.

There is no stocking on Lake of the Woods, as the natural walleye population has ample spawning grounds throughout the lake. One of the prime spawning areas for walleye is at the fast, tumbling waters of Nestor Falls, just a few hundred yards from Meline’s docks.ecies of fish, waterfowl, small game and big game animals.

Sabaskong Bay  and area has long been the destination of choice for walleye anglers. From our docks, we have the boats to allow us to travel anywhere we need to go on Lake of the Woods to keep on top of the schools of ‘eyes.

Sit back and relax in the boat with a coffee in the morning as your guide takes you out onto the lake to the walleye feeding grounds. You may find yourself bottom bouncing a spinner rig along a mud flat west of Hay Island, or jigging a hump in Miles Bay, but one thing is for sure, your guide will take you to where the fish are!

Here is a top-10 list that is sure to get people searching into a future fishing trip.

It was not that long ago that “Trout” were deemed as Canada’s most popular gamefish. But if you really dig into it, the word Trout on its own is quite generic. Had that category been a specific strain like Lake Trout or Rainbow Trout etc., things might have been different.

If you are to fast track to present day in this great fishing country, then currently the Walleye would have to be entered into the ring of this ongoing popularity contest. They are in BC, the Yukon, Nunavut, and NWT, throughout the prairie provinces, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec.

The Walleye is one of those fish species that not too much negative can be thrown at. Yes, they have been known to give up on a boat side fight much sooner than was expected, but many other times, they have also been known to stalk and smash a crankbait 5 feet from a boat in heart-pounding fashion.

Of course, the highest of marks that a Walleye obtains is because of that flaky, white meat that we have all learned to love.

Looking for a great Walleye Hotspot? Then here are 10 (out of many we might add, for future articles of course) Hotspot picks.

LAST MOUNTAIN LAKE, SASKATCHEWAN

This Hotspot is a vast shallow spawning bay on Last Mountain Lake in the province of Saskatchewan. Big Northerns—as well as some gorgeous Walleye—move into this bay early in the year to spawn and feed.

Try casting four to five-inch swimbaits; they are very effective in this area. Start with a steady medium-speed retrieve and then vary if necessary.

Baits : Big Hammer and Yamamoto Swimbaits Presentation : Cast and Reel Water depth : 4-6 feet

MUSKOKA LAKE, ONTARIO

This Hotspot is a point for Walleye, Pike, and Smallmouth Bass.

If the fish are cranked up, then throwing 3-5″ plastics are your best bet. If the fish are slow and lethargic, then you may have to switch to live bait.

When using the Traditional, Down Vu, and Side Vu screens on our Garmins, fishing spots like this one are fun to dissect because of the strong signal sent back from the solid rock bottom. Due to the absence of weeds, fish are easy to see as well.

Work this entire Hotspot area from shoreline to deep; the fish could be anywhere on it.

Baits : Swimbaits, Grubs, Live Bait Presentation : Drifting, Trolling, Casting Water depth : 2-20+ feet

Lac La Biche, Alberta

This Hotspot is a series of humps in Lac La Biche in Alberta.

Angelo and Ray Kholrus found this spot with hopes of catching giant Pike but were ultimately surprised—in a good way that is—by the fantastic Walleye fishery La Biche has to offer.

The Walleye on this Hotspot proved once again that it pays big dividends to experiment and think outside of the box!

Baits : Big Swimbaits, Big Grubs. Presentation : Work on Bottom. Water depth : 7-30 feet

NAGAGAMI LAKE, ONTARIO

This Hotspot is a medium-sized hump rising from the depths of Nagagami Lake in Northern Ontario. It’s a classic structure that will get even better as the season progresses. To see how Fish’n Canada host Pete Bowman fared on this spot, check out the episode, “ Dual Frequency Nagagami Walleye .”

With water in the 50- to 60-degree area, you can try soft plastics on your jig but always have a bucket of minnows on hand just in case.

This structure tops out at around eight to ten feet, then drops off gradually to over 20, and finally plummets to 50 feet. Make sure you check all depths with your Garmin.

Baits : Jig and Plastic. Jig and Minnow. Presentation : Short casts, slow retrieve, vertical jigging. Water depth : 8-20 feet.

LAC COUGHLIN, QUEBEC

This Hotspot is a break close to an island on one of Moose Territories Lodge’s many Walleye lakes. The waypoint on the screen will get you there. Work the entire area from shallow to 20+ feet. Start with some form of live bait and, if the fishing is crazy, then change to artificials.

Trolling, jigging, or simply dragging live bait are all great options.

HAWK LAKE, ONTARIO

This Fish’n Canada Hotspot is on the main-lake side of a point leading into a shallow boulder bay on Hawk Lake in Northern Ontario.

With the bottom here being so flat, look for fish on your sonar. By using a combination screen of Traditional, Clear Vu, and Side Vu, you should be able to pinpoint and cast to individual fish with remarkable accuracy. 

Learning to use your electronics and then studying the variety of screens they offer can really increase your odds of producing fish. If it works for us, it will work for you!

Baits : Jig and Leech Presentation : Cast or drop to individual fish Water depth : 18-25 feet

LESSER SLAVE LAKE, ALBERTA

This Alberta Hotspot is a flat near the narrows that separate the two large sections of Lesser Slave Lake. This is an area that needs lots of searching since the fish will not sit in one specific spot for very long. Typical of a flat, this area has groups of Walleye moving in and out at different times.

Try trolling spinners tipped with worms, Walleye-style crankbaits, or dragging a jig and drop shot combo. Vary your speeds.

Depth:  12 – 25 feet.  Rig:  Bottom Bouncers; Jigs Drop Shots with Live Bait; Walleye-style Crankbaits.  Technique:  Drift Using Wind; Slow Troll with Electric Motor; Troll with Kicker.

ESNAGI LAKE, ONTARIO

This Hotspot is a great one for big Walleye and it’s close to the world-class Lodge 88. Troll or drift parallel to the bank in around seven to fourteen feet of water with a worm harness, a leech on a drop shot or live bait rig, or even a crankbait.

CALLING LAKE, ALBERTA

This Hotspot is a fast-breaking drop off of what’s referred to as Volkswagen Point on Calling Lake in Alberta. The waypoint will put you right on it!

It’s easy to recognize because there’s literally an old broken down Volkswagen on the shore almost directly opposite the waypoint. When we were there we used jigs and dead minnows—remember, live minnows aren’t allowed here—and caught an incredible amount of quality Walleye. As a matter of fact, we believe it’s the most double-headers we’ve ever caught on one spot!

MAXHAMISH LAKE, BRITISH COLUMBIA

This Hotspot is a long skinny weed-bed on Maxhamish Lake in  British Columbia .

Urs from Northern Rockies Lodge had told us about this weed-bed in the past but we never needed it. On this trip though, we needed it. In a nutshell, there were more Pike and Walleye here than probably any other part of the lake. For every biting fish we encountered, our  Panoptix LiveScope  showed us anywhere from 3 to 5 times that many fish in the area! It was alive and active with Walleye and Pike. This is truly a fishing hotspot!

Of course there are SO many Walleye hotspots across this country that we could not include all of them in a single “10” article. These ones are specific waypoints on individual bodies of water ranging in sizes from smallish to medium/large. Rivers and huge waters will be in future articles.

Electronics are so important these days. Not just for finding fish, but for locating bait fish, structure, “way points” on unfamiliar lakes, GPS co-ordinates, and much more. I’m keeping my fingers crossed on winning the Garmin. I fish the Wahnapitae River here in Sudbury, Ontario. The river is a flooded forest that was used to float logs to where they would be loaded for transport to the lumber mills. The river is a nightmare of logs and sunken trees and would be nice to see the bottom so I could stop loosing anchors that are getting hung up.

It’s actually sad how technology and the Media have helped in a massive decline in the species. Over fishing and the weekend warriors come in expensive Bass Boat rape the lake then everything is hidden in the wells off they go with no Ministry anymore to regulate

Walleye ( Sander Vitreus )

The Canadian Walleye is one of Cobham River’s favorite species to fish for. Walleyes get their name from their distinct eyes that look straight out as if it’s looking straight out at the wall. These large eyes give the fish an advantage in low light, deep waters, rough water, or, as our guests call it, “Walleye Chop.” This is one of the reasons we find the best Walleye fishing on more stormy days and deeper holes in the river. Like most things in nature, Walleyes find their advantage in nature and use it to their advantage.

Another great time to find Walleye is at dawn/dusk. This time of the day, Walleyes know they have the advantage and start to hunt for disoriented prey such as Rattle traps, double twister tails, and small spoons.

Manitoba Record Walleye for 2011 was caught at Cobham River Lodge. The Walleye was a monstrous 34 inches and 15.5 pounds. Although the largest Walleye ever recorded was 42 inches, weighing 29 pounds.

While Northern Pike can lay up to 85,000 eggs, large female Walleye can lay up to 500,000 eggs . The spawn usually happens when the water temperature warms 6 to 10 °C (43 to 50 °F). The Cobham River usually hits this temperature in early to mid-May. Then, 40-60 days later, the juvenile Walleyes become piscivorous (a fancy way of saying they eat fish). The Walleye’s main prey are smaller Northern Pike, Walleye, Yellow Perch, White Fish, and Crawfish, all of which are found in the waters of The Cobham River and Paulson River.

So, where are they? Well, our guests at Cobham find them off rock shores and points. I generally tell guests that anytime they see a rocky shore with softball-sized rocks, it’s worth 5 minutes to see if the Walleyes are stacked up there. Walleyes are commonly found in depths of 8-12 feet, depending on the time of year and light conditions. Usually, 8 feet during the earlier parts of the day and season and deeper water as the day gets brighter and waters get warmer later in the season. But don’t think you won’t find them in the weeds. Often, you’ll be casting for the Monster Northern Pike and find a Walleye hole. Good news, if you find a stack of Walleye in a weed bed, it’s a safe bet a few 40+ inch pike are also watching them. This is also true in reverse. When fishing your favorite Walleye spot off a rock point, it’s not uncommon to hook into your Master Northern Pike, who was also watching your Walleye spot. This is why we always say to use a leader! The argument that you catch more without a leader may have some truth, but is it worth catching a few extra Walleye when you already catch 100 fish a day to lose your 40+ inch Northern Pike?

Mojikit Lake Fly-In Walleye & Northern Pike Fishing in Ontario 

Mojikit Lake is located 50 miles northeast of our seaplane base in Armstrong Station, Ontario. It can only be accessed by air, which makes it a true fly-in fishing adventure on Mattice Lake. Once you get to the base, we will fly you to Mojikit Lake in a seaplane. The lake is one of our larger bodies of water, covering more than 14,000 acres. You can anticipate larger catches of 3.5 to 4 pound walleye as well as the opportunity to catch a massive northern pike.

The modern, 2-bedroom cabin at Mojikit Lake is equipped with a full kitchen, hot and cold water shower, all furnishings, wood stove for heat, electric lights, full size electric refrigerator, electric freezer, electric coffee maker, propane range, propane barbecue, and receptacles in all rooms for plugging in CPAP machines, chargers, etc.

Walleye Fishing in Ontario

DESCRIPTION : This species averages from 15 inches to 27 inches in length, and many in the 27 inch to 30+ inch range. Walleye’s have a dark green back and a gold to white coloured belly. On their back is a dorsal fin which has 12 to 16 spines which are very sharp, almost needle like. Some of their key characteristics are its large silvery eye, a black blotch at the base of its dorsal fin, and a white blotch at the tip of its tail.

Spring and fall are great times to try artificial hard baits such as the Shad Rap, Wally Diver, Rattlin Rap, Live Target, etc… Soft plastics work year round and we have good success with Berkley Power Grubs, Gulp, and Ribbon Tails.

As the Walleye move into deeper water you cannot go wrong with jigs tipped with a minnow. It is best to have a variety of size and colour of jig.

If the bite is soft, try resting your jig near/on the bottom with a very gentle twitch every once in a while ~ this slow action will convince even the finickiest fish.

DISTRIBUTION:  These fish are found in great numbers on Lac Seul and Map B Lakes. As spring spawners they can be found in relatively shallow waters during the months of May and June. They migrate to the deeper water as the season progresses where they settle into their summer holes for some of the most consistent fishing we see. As the summer starts to turn to fall, these large schools of fish start to move back to their spawning areas where they find an abundance of bait fish. You can expect to find these fish in depths of water ranging from 6 feet to 35 feet.

ANGLING METHOD:  The most common method used to catch these fish is to jig for them using various size lead head jigs tipped with a minnow. The most important key to jigging for Walleyes is to be able to feel the lake bottom. Other techniques used in this area include casting or trolling crankbaits (this is best suited for spring and fall fishing when they are shallow), and trolling weighted spinners, also tipped with a minnow.

TROPHY WALLEYE FISHING:  Lac Seul is the top producing trophy Walleye lake in our area and is rated as one of the top three Walleye fisheries in Ontario, but we also fish Minnitaki Lake for trophy walleye. We also walleye fish on Abram and Pelican Lakes, and while trophy walleyes are possible, these lakes tend not to be as productive as Lac Seul and Minnitaki Lakes, because of the superb structure and spawning areas they have. Also, our  Lac Seul Fly-in Outposts , on the northeast end of Lac Seul, are in the heart of some of the best trophy Walleye fishing Lac Seul has to offer!

Walleye, also known as Yellow Pike or Pickerel, are a freshwater fish native to most of Canada as well as the Northern parts of the United States. Northern walleye are one of the most popular sport fishing species in Canada because of the challenge in catching them and, more importantly, for their firm texture and light color , which makes them a delicious fish to consume.

Due to their popularity with anglers, the size of fish caught varies as walleye are generally protected with regulations on the amount one can keep, as well as a "slot size" (about 40-58 cm or 16-23 in) in which anglers are mandated to release them back into the water to allow spawning and to promote healthy and abundant fisheries. You will often hear smaller walleye in the 14"-19" range referred to as "eater sized walleye." Many anglers prefer to keep these smaller walleye and return the larger fish back to the lake. Be certain to at least get a picture with larger walleyes though…a Trophy Canadian Walleye is any walleye over 30 inches with the largest walleye ever caught in Canada topping out at 34 inches.

Where to Fish for Walleye in Canada

Fortunately for anglers, walleye can be found in most rivers and lakes throughout Canada. They can be caught from their spawn in the spring straight through to the end of the season. During the early season spawn the Walleye are usually very shallow and they migrate to deeper waters as the season moves on. While they are in many Canadian waters…the trick is in getting them interested in your presentation.

Understanding Walleye Behavior

Walleye have an amazing ability to see with little or no light and generally stay closer to the bottom of the water. They tend to feed most often at dawn and dusk, when skies are overcast, or when there is a choppy current on the water as this disrupts light waves and mimics low light conditions. Unlike Northern Pike , Walleye travel in schools and are more passive in their strike, so presentation of bait/lures is crucial with Walleye.

Tips for Canadian Walleye Fishing

Use of live bait in the form of minnows and night crawlers during the pre-dawn and dusk/post dusk hours is best. Lures mimicking the swimming action of small fish are also effective as walleye are predatory and will feed on smaller baitfish. The depth at which walleye are caught varies on the time of year and the layout of the lake in which they are fished. Springtime is the spawning period for walleye and when they are found in shallower waters (up to 10 feet) and closer to shore. Summer and the end of the spawn sees Walleye returning to deeper waters (if available) where live bait is most effective but the type of live bait used can vary in effectiveness depending on the day. Be sure to check to local/provincial websites for the specific conservation guidelines and regulations.

Favorite Way to Target Walleye

A personal favorite approach to target northern walleye is to troll with a floating gum drop jig. Try and be ready with a variety of floating jig sizes and colors, then use a walking sinker with about two feet behind it until you tie the jig on. In addition to varying the jig you are presenting, play around with the distance behind the sinker.
