At its most basic, a personal-item bag is a carry-on bag that you can stuff under the seat in front of you while on a flight—which is why it’s sometimes called underseat luggage. Although we wanted to find bags that maximize your available underseat space, airlines generally aren’t as forthcoming with their underseat dimensions as they are with their overhead-bin restrictions. And personal-item sizes, once you do find them, usually differ from one airline to another:

After checking with 12 airlines, we found that the average size of a personal-item bag is roughly 18 by 14 by 8 inches. If your bag isn’t rigid, and it comes close to these measurements, you’re probably going to be okay stuffing it under the seat in front of you. If you really want to be sure your underseat luggage will fit, the best approach is to call ahead and confirm the underseat dimensions for your flight.

Similar to carry-on luggage, underseat luggage is subject to size and shape requirements. However, unlike most of the things people fly with—nearly all of which are precisely designed for airplane use—almost any small bag (your favorite backpack or tote, for instance) can work as a personal item. That said, there are a few details that separate a great personal-item bag from an ordinary one. We’ve found that beyond its being just the right size, a personal item should have a few key design details for it to really stand out.

• Durability: A personal-item bag will spend a bunch of time sitting on an airplane floor—an unappealing resting place of shoe grime, spilled liquids, and lost snacks. It’s important that a bag is made of material that’s both resistant to abrasion and easy to clean.
• Organization: As more airlines begin to introduce Basic Economy tickets (which often restrict travelers to personal items only), it is becoming increasingly important to have a bag that can mimic some of the capacity and organization of a carry-on. We prefer bags that have a variety of pockets, ideally a separate laptop compartment, and some kind of water-bottle holder.
• Multiple carrying options: Some underseat-luggage pieces designed with air travel in mind have sleeves that you can slide over the rails of carry-on luggage handles. But other carrying options—such as backpack straps, shoulder straps, or side handles—can also facilitate easy maneuverability.

Lots of luggage manufacturers now sell bags specifically labeled as “personal items,” and some of these have useful features that you might not find in your average backpack or tote bag (more on that later). Still, if you have a bag that already works for you, stick with it. If not, check out our picks below. Also, look at the recommendations in our guides to laptop backpacks (most of which will fit under a seat) and duffle bags (ditto), as well as any of the picks in our guides to packable daypacks and tote bags . One of those might work just as well for you as a made-for-the-purpose personal item.

For this guide, of those bags specifically designed to be personal items, we looked for models from reputable brands that we’ve recommended in the past, that meet the average underseat dimensions, and that have the traits to make something a great personal-item bag. Then we chose bags that offered different features to suit multiple types of travel scenarios and preferences.

Waterfield Air Porter Carry-On Bag

A shoulder bag to organize your tech.

This bag combines the versatility and toughness of a canvas-and-leather briefcase with the organization and capacity of a small daypack.

Buying Options

The Waterfield Air Porter Carry-On Bag shines as a tech organizer that still has enough room to also hold a change of clothes. And it’s still good-looking enough to carry from the plane to the office without raising an eyebrow.

It’s a durable bag made for travel. The Waterfield Air Porter has a pass-through strap that you can attach to a wheeled-suitcase handle. And, like our other picks, this bag fits well under an airline seat. In addition to the waterproof waxed-canvas exterior (which makes it easy to wipe off), a Waterfield bag has waterproof exterior zippers and a water-resistant interior lining. The Air Porter is built to look better with age, while also keeping your stuff safe from the elements and the stress of travel. In addition to the pass-through strap, the bag has handles (so you can carry it like a briefcase) and a removable shoulder strap (this keeps it from getting caught on things while it’s stowed away).

It’s a well-organized bag for traveling, especially with tech. The bag is split into two compartments. One half has a built-in padded sleeve for a 15-inch laptop and two pockets for tech accessories (including wires, headphones, and charging components); both are large enough to hold a battery pack for on-the-go charging. The other half is the larger compartment, with plenty of small interior pockets to assist you in organizing items, such as a few small pieces of clothing or a toiletry kit. The Air Porter also has a front expanding pocket, with magnets that keep the flap closed whether the pocket’s empty or full. This is a great feature if you often travel with magazines and books. On either side, the Air Porter has two expanding sleeves for holding a travel umbrella and a water bottle.

It’s customizable. Waterfield also makes an Air Caddy to hold your tablet and cables. If you don’t already have a tech organizer , I recommend it. The Air Caddy is as well built as the Air Porter, plus it fits nicely inside the bag and matches the overall look.

It has a warranty. Waterfield has a 30-day return policy with no restocking fee, but you will have to cover return shipping costs. Additionally, Waterfield offers a lifetime warranty for any product defects.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

• The Air Porter is our priciest pick, but considering the quality of the materials and craftsmanship, we think it’s worth the price—this bag will last a lifetime if it’s cared for properly.
• We do wish it were a little larger so you could take full advantage of the space available at your feet. That said, Waterfield does make a larger version of the Air Porter (with almost 10 additional liters of space) called the X-Air Duffel , which still fits under the seat in front of you.

Monos Metro Duffel

A weekend bag alternative.

This classic carryall has luxurious touches, and it holds more than any bag of its type we tested (its capacity is on a par with that of our rollerboard pick).

The Monos Metro Duffel is a luxuriant shoulder bag that has a vegan leather exterior and soft nylon twill interior, with detailed organization and add-ons made specifically for simplifying travel.

It offers high-quality details with travel-specific organization and design. The vegan leather Monos Metro Duffel is reassuringly robust in a world of bags usually made from various types of thin nylon. Although larger, it’s like the Waterfield in weight and feel, and it has similar details, including a pass-through for a luggage handle and an interior sleeve for a laptop (up to 15 inches). The Metro has metal hardware and a few secure-feeling magnetic snaps to hold the bag together.

It’s spacious. The Metro has a 22-liter capacity, about 8 liters more than the Waterfield. It’s enough for a small change of clothes if needed. The bag is easy to carry on your shoulder or by the two handle straps. Even fully packed, it’s not quite large enough to ever feel so impossibly heavy that it’s unmanageable.

Monos also makes a larger version of the bag, called The Weekender . This bag is essentially the same as the Metro Duffel, with additional storage built into the bottom. However, the Weekender slightly exceeds the personal-item dimensions for some airlines, and most people don’t need to carry 48 liters of extra stuff in their personal item.

It has plenty of organization. The Metro has two external pockets and one interior one, as well as an internal water-bottle sleeve. However, one of those external pockets doubles as your luggage-handle pass-through with the aid of a lower zip. It’s a usefully adaptable design for travel in and out of the airport.

There are some customization options. The Metro also comes with a snap-on kit bag for easy access to personal items. And we like the Metro Folio Kit if you travel often; it also snaps on but is more rigid than the included kit. It’s something between a travel wallet and a miniature personal item.

While we’re sure that vegan leather is durable—as in, your bag won’t suddenly fall apart from a tear or scuff—we do wonder how it will look after years of use. Real leather tends to “wear in,” whereas not all vegan leather does, at least not as well. We’ll continue to test and update.

This diminutive luggage is easy to move around. This compact tote is large enough to carry everything you need for an overnight trip, but it still falls within the average US airline underseat dimensions. It sits on two wheels, so it’s a remarkably maneuverable case for anyone who doesn’t prefer (or is unable) to carry their personal item on their shoulder or back.

It lasts. • As with any rolling luggage, with Travelpro Crew VersaPack Carry-On Rolling Tote, you lose a little packing space to the handle and wheel carriage. The tote’s rigid shape means there’s very little wiggle room if, for whatever reason, it doesn’t fit under the seat in front of you. Despite the inclusion of a small, exterior, flexible pocket—nominally for an umbrella or water bottle—we found that it was too small to be of much use for anything except a very narrow plastic water bottle.
• If you catch a seat with an underseat power bank or any other kind of obstruction, you won’t be able to wedge this case into place like you might be able to do with a soft bag or backpack.

If you want a personal item that’s simple, well organized, and similar to a weekend duffle or a large tote (with enough space for a spare outfit, a toiletry bag, and a laptop), Away’s The Everywhere Bag is an excellent choice.

This bag feels aggressively designed to offend absolutely no one. It is the true neutral of all personal items, with plenty of carrying options and as many organization options as our other picks have.

It’s thoughtfully organized. The interior features six slim pockets and a sleeve large enough for a 15-inch laptop. At the base of the bag, there’s a zippered waterproof pocket for an umbrella. On the outside of the bag, there’s a single slim pocket, which is well shaped for tickets and important travel documents. Otherwise, the bag opens into a larger interior pocket, which is big enough to hold a change of clothes, a toiletry kit, and a book or magazine. If you’re flying for just an overnight trip, this could easily be the only bag you need to carry.

The Everywhere Bag isn’t as protective as other picks. There’s no interior separation, so all of your gear is mashed together along with your computer and tech. And there isn’t a water-bottle pocket, so if you carry one, it will sit dangerously close to everything else.

Longchamp Le Pliage Original L Tote Bag

A stylish, expandable tote.

This tote packs up small when not in use, and the tough nylon is perfect for the floor of an airplane: It’s easy to clean, and it protects items from most scuffs and kicks.

The Longchamp Le Pliage Original L Tote Bag is handsome, so it works nicely if you need a personal item that can easily transition from a travel bag to a purse or work bag as soon as you leave the plane.

This is a lightweight bag for easy travel. Longchamp’s Le Pliage Tote is very lightweight (especially compared with leather bags), so it shines as a travel bag due to its simple, packable design and practical materials. The nylon construction wipes down easily if it’s spilled on. And if you want to consolidate down to one bag on any leg of your trip, this tote can be folded down and packed away.

It’s well made and surprisingly durable. The shoulder strap is made of rolled leather, and our tester said it didn’t bite into the shoulder as much as unrolled leather straps do. The bag’s main compartment is large enough to hold a laptop, sweatshirt, water bottle, and other assorted travel items. It zips shut, so you won’t lose anything, even as you stuff it underneath your seat. The bag also has an understated shape and design, so it blends in nicely with both professional and casual outfits. There is one modest pocket on top for your phone, wallet, and keys. However, we found that even this pocket felt a touch small. One of our testers has had this bag for almost five years. And she reports that the nylon looks the same as when she got it, and the leather, while it has worn in over the years, is still in excellent shape.

Considering that this bag is great for going right from the plane to the office, we would have loved for it to have a laptop compartment or some other way to separate items beyond the single top pocket. In our testing, we ended up organizing the tote ourselves with bag organizers . Also, Longchamp’s Le Pliage lacks a pass-through strap or slot for attaching it to the handles of your carry-on luggage.

The Tom Bihn Pilot may be a good option if you’re looking for an alternative to our top-pick shoulder bag. While it’s not as conveniently organized or as nicely styled as our other picks, it is half the price and well made, if a bit aesthetically utilitarian. We’re going to take a closer look at this option in our next update. The Nomad Lane V4 Bento Bag is another interesting option that’s decently well recommended on other reputable sites. We haven’t looked at much from Nomad Lane, so we can’t speak to the quality yet. But this bag’s design and reputation make it an intriguing option to test. And lastly, we’re taking a look at the Vagabond Jet from ultralight gear brand Gossamer Gear.

The Cotopaxi Batac 24L Backpack is a decent small backpack, but it’s not ideally set up for underseat access or use during a flight. That said, the bag is well made, shaped to fit under just about any airline seat, and warrantied for a lifetime of travel.

The Calpak Luka Duffle has limited organization and about as much style as a well-folded duvet. And we think our other picks are easier to use while handling luggage and moving through airports—let alone on the actual plane itself.

The Briggs & Riley Underseat Cabin Bag is a resoundingly fine bag! It does exactly what it says it should, and it’s from a company we trust. But there’s nothing really to set it apart, either. However, if you end up with this bag, it should be satisfying to use.

How to bring a suit on a plane (and look like a total boss doing it)

One of the biggest challenges in a traveler’s life trying to is figuring out the formula for arriving in style with clean, wrinkle-free clothes. Some types of clothing are easier to manage than others, but I’m about to discuss the biggest challenge of them all: how to bring a suit on a plane without destroying it (or your sanity).

Long story short, the easiest way is to use a hanging bag specifically made for suits. However, you can also pack it in a traditional suitcase, roll it, or even wear it.

There’s a lot more to it than that though, and the following is an insanely detailed overview of all the techniques you can use to keep your suit in great shape. Even after a long flight!

The best (and safest) ways to bring a suit on a plane

As I’ve already mentioned, you have several different options for how to bring a suit on a plane. I’ve tried everything over the years, and the the following 4 methods are what have worked best for me:

1. Use a high-quality hanging bag

The best option for traveling with a suit is a hanging bag. It’s specifically designed to hold suits, jackets, and other items that are difficult to pack into a suitcase. Nevertheless, it’s a good idea to check with your airline first, as a hanging bag might count as your one permitted carry-on.

If you do use a hanging bag, you’re better off bringing it on the plane instead of checking it. That’s because most luggage handling systems (and personnel) will be too rough on hanging bags, which have soft sides that will wind up getting crushed by heavier luggage.

You have two choices for storing a hanging bag on a plane:

• Ideally, you can hang it up in one of the closets , which are typically in the First Class and Business Class sections. However, closet space on a plane is limited and might only be available for passengers sitting in those sections.
• If you can’t store your hanging bag in a closet, the next best storage location is the overhead compartment. Fortunately, most hanging bags fold in half, saving space without wrinkling the suit. Try to place your bag on top of any other luggage in the bin.

2. Pack it in your suitcase

As long as you pack carefully, you can put your suit in a regular suitcase. Here’s how:

• First, pack the suitcase with your other clothing.
• Then, turn your suit inside-out.
• Place one shoulder of the jacket into the other shoulder.
• Move your rolled-up socks into the shoulders to help keep the suit wrinkle-free.
• Now you’re ready to pack the pants. Fold them at the seams.
• Then, place them into the suitcase with the waist flush with one side. Let the legs hang down off the other side.
• Put your dress shirt on top of the pants with the sleeves crossed and folded.
• Next, put the jacket on top of the shirt.
• Finally, fold the pant legs back into the suitcase, covering the jacket.

The same technique can be used if your luggage happens to be a cardboard box. Yes, it is possible to check a box as luggage (and I highly recommend it if you are transporting precious cargo such as a suit).

3. Roll it up

If you want to pack your suit in a suitcase, but you don’t have much room to spare, you can roll up each part individually. The rolling method takes up the least amount of room in your luggage. However, wrinkles are more likely with this technique than any other, so make sure you roll carefully.

• First, steam the suit to remove all wrinkles. Then, place each item on a hard surface, such as a kitchen table. Roll each item separately.
• Make the roll as tight as possible. Pull sections taunt before wrapping, and try to line up the edges of the material evenly as you go.
• Tying the roll with a ribbon can help keep it tight during travel.
• Place the rolls into your luggage. Try to pack other clothing tightly around each roll to help keep everything secure. Alternatively, you can place the rolls in the webbed compartment of your luggage.

4. Wear it (like a boss)

If your flight will be short, you can skip packing the suit entirely and instead wear it on the plane. It’s an excellent option if you plan to head to a function immediately after landing.

• Before sitting, take off your jacket. Ask the flight attendant to hang it up in one of the plane’s closets. If that’s not possible, lay the jacket across your lap for the duration of the flight.

Wearing your suit on the plane is easy but does pose certain risks. Sitting in a cramped airline seat, especially for a long time, can make your suit look wrinkled and worn. Fortunately, if you’re only on board for a few hours, wrinkling should be limited to around the waist area, which is generally covered when you’re wearing the jacket.

Also, make sure you avoid food or drink during your flight. One clumsy spill can ruin your entire appearance, as you might not have time to find a dry cleaner once you land.

Products to make traveling with a suit easier

Most methods for how to bring a suit on a plane are based on technique. However, there are a few pieces of gear can make travel easier:

One final tip (for when all else fails)

Despite your best efforts, your suit still might get wrinkled during the flight. Fortunately, sprucing it up is usually a painless process. In fact, you can turn any shower into a makeshift steamer (it’s my favorite method actually). Here’s how:

• Hang your suit on the back of the bathroom door.
• Turn on the shower as hot as possible.
• Leave the curtain pulled back or the shower door open.
• Close the door, keep the shower running, and let the steam build up in the room for at least 15 minutes.
• Switch the shower off but leave the suit hanging in the bathroom. By the time the steam clears, the suit should be wrinkle-free and ready to wear.

What’s the best way to pack a suit? Whether you’re trying to pack for your airline carry-on, or simply get your suit to your wedding in pristine condition, the last thing you want to do is damage it or crease it so it can’t be worn on the other side. Today, the team of expert tailors from Oliver Wicks takes an in-depth look at how to properly pack your suit for convenience and safety, without having a wrinkled mess to sort out at the end of the trip.

The Right Bag

A little helper, pro tip: check you have everything, pro tip: know your jacket, every fold - think “roll”, not “crease”, the classic way, using a dry cleaning bag, the inside-out shoulder, for a carry-on bag, shoes, belt, and accessories, preparation.

Did you know that the number one cause of wrinkles and other issues when packing a suit, for airline travel particularly, is simply overpacking? Because of those funky weight limits, we cram as much as possible into each bag, and it is really not the way to go with something as expensive and important as your best suit. Years ago, we’d use a garment bag to carry the suit onto the plane separately, but with carry-on luggage becoming ever more limited, that’s no longer quite as practical as it once was—you probably need more than just your suit and laptop on the plane, right?

Garment bags certainly still have their uses—if you’re traveling by car, for example, one will be invaluable to help your suit arrive in one piece. And you may like to use one to hang your suit in when you arrive at your destination. But for airline travel, we advise ensuring you have a high-quality, sturdy piece of luggage instead. One with sufficient room to fit all your items in without cramping them. Make sure it has a hard shell or stiff sides to protect your suit and other items from the jostling in the cargo hold. It’s important to make sure that the suit that fits you also fits your luggage well, so you don’t damage the garment. This preparation will pay you back when you look fitted, tailored, and amazing on the other side.

If you’re able to squeeze it into your luggage allowance, a small hand garment steamer will be the single best investment you can make. If you can’t, there are some workarounds—hotels often have ironing services, or you can do a lot with some hanging time in the steam of a hot bathroom. But the ability to properly de-crease and care for your garment on the go will be invaluable to you.

Next, make sure you really do have your full suit. Do you want to hear fun stories of guests, grooms, and businessmen who’ve landed to find one cufflink, a shoe, or a belt missing? Sure, that’s fun! Do you want to be that guest, groom, or businessman? Not so much.

Dressing is a pretty instinctive act, especially if we often wear a suit, but you’d be surprised how many little details you can leave out of the mix in a rush. And if you’re not wearing a suit often, unfamiliarity will catch you. So, take some time before the rush of packing to itemize everything and make sure you have every detail—from the jacket, suit pants, and dress shirt right through to belts/bracers/cummerbunds, shoes, socks, cufflinks, pocket squares, ties or bow ties, and any accessories that you plan to wear. We suggest making a list and ticking it off as you pack for extra peace of mind.

How to Actually Pack Your Suit 

Now you have everything you need for suit packing, let’s get to the nitty gritty—how are you going to make this stiff, bulky, and expensive item fold up neatly and safely? Don’t worry—it can be done, we promise! Learning how to pack a suit for travel is surprisingly simple.

If, however, you’re really not able to squeeze your suit into the luggage space you have available, you can always consider wearing it to fly. After all, men and women alike used to dress up for travel! While it comes with an element of risk (a bit of turbulence and your inflight meal might end up in your lap!) , it will ensure your suit gets there. However, the rigors of travel will leave small creases, so don’t expect it to be ready to wear—luckily, your hand steamer will help with that!

By far the hardest part of a suit to fold is your jacket because it has the thickest fabric and most complicated construction. Take a moment to examine exactly how your jacket is built. Whether it has a full or half canvas, for example, will drastically impact your ability to fold it, as well as how badly affected it will be by the process. 

So, get to know your suit a little and you’ll feel more confident about selecting the best packing method. Knowing what suiting fabric was used in your suit will also help you determine how it will hold up in travel.

We are going to focus on packing the jacket for now—we will touch on other parts of the suit under different headings below. Knowing how to pack a blazer for travel is the toughest part.

When folding a letter to fit inside an envelope, you’ll fold the paper on itself, and run your finger down the fold for a nice flat crease. Take note - Try to avoid doing this with garments.

Instead, try to make gentle, loose rolls. When it’s time to unpack, this will lower the chances of having any crease/fold marks left in the jacket, which would be equally as bad as wrinkles, thus defeating the purpose of trying to pack carefully in the first place. In many cases, a deep crease is actually harder to rectify than wrinkles.

This method is very efficient, creating a neat square, but it will involve the most folds as you are packing your suit jacket both horizontally and vertically, so keep that in mind.

• Face your jacket down on a flat surface
• Fold one shoulder into the midpoint of the back, sleeve flat along the back
• You may need to fold the sleeve back toward the outside
• Mirror the other side
• Now you have the two sleeves parallel down the center back of the jacket
• Fold the hem to just under the collar
• Slide your hand under the folded jacket and flip it (lapels will be up, facing you)
• Place it on top of the rest of your packed luggage, lapels up for minimum damage

In addition to your jacket, you can pack your vest this way, as there are just no sleeves to fold.

This method will protect the fabric better, and can cut down on creasing, but is a larger fold in the end. You can use a traditional suit garment bag, or a thin dry cleaning bag—both work.

• Hang the suit inside the garment bag, with the hanger
• Lapels should face you
• Gather the bottom hem of the jacket and fold it up to the collar
• Think of it like a taco shell shape with the lapels and front of the jacket inside and the back outside

This has similarities to the classic method. It is best for satin/silk-lined jackets as it will cut down on creases a lot. If you were wondering how to pack a tuxedo in a suitcase, this could be your method of choice.

• Spread the suit jacket on a flat surface with lapels down
• Fold one shoulder to the center midline, with the sleeve back
• Fold it back toward the outer edge as needed
• Now, turn the other shoulder inside-out
• Insert the first shoulder into the “pocket” created
• Bring the inside-out sleeve toward the center
• Fold the jacket in half down the center
• Fold the bottom to the top
• (Optional) Encase the folded jacket in a dry-cleaning bag

Place it into your suitcase, on the top to avoid additional pressure. There are some variants of this “pocket” method you can try, too.

If you have limited space, for example, when packing a suit in a backpack, or if you want to know how to fold a suit in a carry-on, this is for you.

• Pop both shoulders of the jacket inside out
• Fold it in half so the lapels touch (the lining will be on the outside)
• Fold it again, in thirds

It is ready to pack. This one is easier than it sounds, so try the following video if you need a visual—it also shows you how to fold the trousers, which we are about to cover.

Now your jacket is done, let’s get the trousers packed. You can use any of the jacket folds we’ve covered here for this.

• Simply lay your suit pants out folded in half lengthways (one full leg visible)
• Place the folded jacket in the middle, around knee height
• Fold the cuffs up and over the jacket, then the belt section (in thirds)

Now your jacket and pants are in a neat square, ready to pack. 

Remove your collar stays before packing, so they don’t bend. Also, take off any boutonnieres, collar pins, etc. so they don’t get pressed flat or pushed into the wrong sections of material.

• Spread out your dress shirt face down on a hard, flat surface, buttoned up
• Fold the sleeves toward the center, up the middle
• They’ll look crisscrossed.
• Now, fold the cuff straight up the back on both sides to meet the collar
• Fold the shoulder of each side to the centerline (meet in the middle)
• Now, fold the hem to the collar

Invest in a drawstring shoe bag to pack your dress shoes . You can see these simple bags in the following make-your-own video , but they can be bought commercially, too. Grocery bags will do, but c’mon—let’s be elegant.

The bag will keep wax, polish, and any dirt from impacting the rest of your luggage. Ideally, use two and pack the shoes individually at the bottom of your bag. If necessary, you can pack them in one together—place the soles on the outside, and the shoe heel to toe. This may crush them together a little, though.

You can roll up socks, ties , belts , bracers, pocket squares, and other accessories and place them in the shoes for safekeeping and extra space.

However, we do not advise storing cufflinks, watches, or other expensive and small jewelry items in your shoes. Those are best placed in your carry-on luggage in a small, discrete bag for safety. They should not be checked due to theft risk. You can grab a cheap woman’s jewelry roll to keep them safe and easy to find. There are many styles of these—you can see one in the following DIY video . A drawstring bag or old sock will do in a pinch but if you let the individual pieces move against each other, they could scratch or catch.

Packing a Suit—Dos and Don’ts

Now you know how to pack a suit for a flight, let’s look at some travel dos and don'ts.

• Take the time to pack properly—the tired traveler on the other side with a near-immaculate, safe suit will thank you!
• Steam your garment before you go—just make sure it dries
• Consider taking a garment bag along to place the suit into when you unpack
• Unpack your suit as soon as you can and hang it
• Place your suit on top of your luggage, and your shoes at the bottom
• Throw some spare (clean) plastic bags and a dry cleaning bag into your luggage. They fold to nothing, weigh nothing, and will be useful for storage and hanging when you arrive
• Bonus point if you can arrange for the airline to slap a “Fragile” sticker on your suitcase.
• Never pack a damp garment, ever—mold and damage happen quickly
• Don’t crush, tightly crease, press, or force your suit, as this can do long-term damage
• Don’t place items on top of it in the bag
• Never place shoes on top of garments—not even your unmentionables, let alone your suit! 
• Don’t leave pins, cufflinks, boutonnieres, and other sharp or metallic items in packed suits—they can snag, catch, and cause damage
• Never pack valuable jewelry and accessory items in checked luggage

Every frequent flier needs a good carry-on. And even if you travel only occasionally, you'll be glad to have one on hand. But besides allowing you to bypass checked baggage , what makes a high-quality carry-on? If you ask us, it's about capacity, maneuverability, durability, and design.

With this in mind, we tested 452 carry-on bags, including suitcases, duffels, weekenders, backpacks, and underseat bags to see which models check all the boxes. We packed them up, spun them around, hoisted them overhead, rolled them over various surfaces, and whacked them with a baseball bat to see how they'd hold up in a real-life setting. We also built an airplane set in our New York City lab to hoist them into overhead bins before our editors bring each bag on real trips to see how they fare long-term. The results of these tests were considered — along with price, weight, dimensions, materials, and smart features — to narrow down the best carry-ons currently on the market.

Best Overall

Samsonite freeform carry-on spinner.

This all-star carry-on has a spacious capacity, a durable thermoplastic shell, and smooth-rolling wheels.

We tried lots of excellent suitcases, but the Samsonite Freeform Hardside Spinner was a clear winner as a lighweight, durable, expandable carry-on. We've now tested this bag twice in our lab, recently retesting it to make sure we still loved it as much as we did two years ago when we first tried it out. Exceeding expectations during both lab tests and when we took it out for real-world testing, too, we found that it's easy to maneuver on two or four wheels and rolls smoothly on various surfaces, including carpet, hard flooring, and over curbs. We also like that the aluminum telescoping handle extends and locks with the push of a button.

This all-star suitcase has various pockets within the main compartment, and it expands a couple of inches when you need extra space. We were able to pack enough clothes for a four-day trip, including two pairs of shoes, multiple jackets, and two toiletry bags — no expansion needed. And while it does have a separator to keep your shoes away from your clean clothes, we wish this carry-on had a zippered section or removable bag for dirty laundry, though your favorite travel pouch would do the trick.

We loved the sleek, minimalist-modern design of the Freeform, which comes in more than 12 hues ranging from white to mint to merlot. After hitting it with a baseball bat during both tests, the polycarbonate (high-strength thermoplastic) shell remained scuff-free and showed virtually no signs of damage. Even after six months of regularly traveling with this bag during our travels, it shows no signs of wear and tear, and we were able to easily buff out any minor scuffs it had accumulated. Considering the reasonable price, durable construction, and spacious capacity, we think it's a great choice for frequent fliers and anyone in need of a high-quality carry-on.

Tumi alpha international dual access carry-on.

This bag has two access points and a removable garment bag for a suit or dress.

When the front-access section is fully packed, it will eat into the space in the main compartment.

The Tumi International Dual Access carry-on was a close runner-up to the Samsonite Freeform. It moves like a dream on various types of flooring, thanks to the four smooth-gliding dual spinner wheels and comfortable telescoping handle. Even after using the bag for three months, the wheels never got caught on any surfaces, making it easy to run through the airport or navigate a new city. Made of the brand's signature ballistic nylon, it also passed our baseball bat test with flying colors.

We were able to pack everything into the bag’s various compartments and loved the flexibility of a removable suiter for trips with dressier attire. The clamshell design also features several interior pockets and compression straps on one half to easily hold our four-day-trip packing list. The front-access portion can easily fit a sweater or light layer when the main suitcase isn’t stuffed full, or you can use it for tech items or a small makeup bag instead. There are also two pockets on the exterior for smaller items like a travel umbrella , as well as a built-in USB port you can connect to a power bank (sold separately). Though the price is higher than many other carry-ons, this is an investment in an undoubtedly high-quality carrier that will last for years to come.

Best Expandability

Away the carry-on flex.

This carry-on is pretty spacious to begin with, but you can unzip the expander for 2.25 inches of extra space.

It might not meet all carry-on sizing requirements when you fully expand it.

This durable carry-on manages to be compact and portable while still offering a ton of space inside thanks to two large interior compartments and a helpful compression system. You can zip your items in on one side and buckle them in on the other, using the mesh pockets to store smaller items for organization. As all overpackers know, sometimes you just need a few extra inches of space — and The Carry-on Flex features a zipper expander that adds an additional 2.25 inches if you happen to buy one souvenir too many on a trip and need to fit it all in on the way home. However, be wary of your airline’s overhead bin allowances because using the expander may make your carry-on one inch too large, and you may be forced to check it (the expanded dimensions of the bag are 22.7 x 14.7 x 9.6 inches).

Other highlights we loved during testing included the smooth wheels that can roll in any direction; the different height options of the handle; and the notch on the underside of the bag that makes it so much easier to lift out of a car trunk, into an overhead bin, or off of a luggage carousel. The bag also felt very sturdy and tough with no dents and barely a scratch after we threw it off counters and hit it repeatedly with a baseball bat during testing.

Best Budget

Amazon basics expandable hardside 21-inch spinner.

This wallet-friendly carry-on has a scratch-resistant shell and a surprisingly spacious capacity.

It only comes in four colors and doesn't have any smart features or a combination lock.

For something more affordable , look no further than Amazon. We found that this budget-friendly hardside suitcase maneuvers really smoothly, even on carpet and over bumps, and the handles turn like a champ. Not only that, but the scratch-resistant shell held up surprisingly well through our bat and drop tests on more than one occasion — like the Samsonite Freeform Carry-on, we loved this bag so much that we tested it a second time recently to make sure it was still up to our standards. We did notice some minor scuffing after our second round of hitting the bag with a baseball bat, but we were able to buff them out with a finger easily.

During testing, we were able to fit four days worth of clothing, shoes, and toiletries without having to expand the bag, though we're comforted by the fact that there's room to spare. After six months of regularly using the bag, we found it to be the perfect size for weekend trips.

Most Spacious

Briggs & riley 22 inch spinner.

The expansion system is easy to use and adds 10 more liters of space, making this the most spacious carry-on on this list.

While carry-ons typically have less room than checked bags, the 22-inch spinner from Briggs & Riley lets you get the most bang for your buck. It has the largest capacity on this list when fully expanded, offering up to 51 liters of space. Our favorite aspect of the bag, though, has to be the clever expansion system that adds 25 percent more room. Instead of using a zipper like a traditional suitcase, you simply press two buttons located inside the bag to raise panels that take it from a 41-liter bag to a 51-liter bag in seconds.

The bag is plenty spacious without the expander as well, and we were able to fit our full packing list with room to spare during testing. The bag has one large compartment inside that is pretty deep and becomes large enough to fit bulky items like boots once expanded. The top of the bag has a small compartment with two mesh pockets for storage, and there is a compression pad inside to pack down clothes. There is also a pouch on the back exterior of the bag that can store a power bank and a small electronic device for charging on the go. The carry-on rolled smoothly on various terrains when we wheeled it from carpet to concrete and through our obstacle course. The hardside shell seems quite durable and didn't dent after we hit it multiple times with a metal baseball bat, although it did scratch on the bottom when going over a concrete curb during testing. Overall, we think it's a sturdy bag that has plenty of space for overpackers.

Most Stylish

Delsey chatelet air 2.0 21-inch spinner.

The Chatelet Air 2.0 has a gorgeous vintage appeal, and despite the elevated aesthetics, it doesn't sacrifice functionality or durability.

It's not expandable, so the compact design is best for short trips.

If luggage aesthetic is a top priority, Delsey's Chatelet Air 2.0 might be your best bet. Inspired by traditional Parisian architecture with unique lines, contrast stitching, and a vintage appeal, this suitcase is a sight for sore eyes. Sleek design aside, it's exceptionally functional. There's a fully zippered compartment on one side and compression straps on the other, plus pockets throughout and even a handy USB port.

What's more, the zippers open and close smoothly, and it glides effortlessly with the four spinner wheels on carpet, hard floors, and even stone pavers. It's durable, too, sustaining no visible damage after three months of use including two international flights in which the bag was checked. This bag is a standard carry-on size, and we were able to fit everything on our packing list . However, it’s probably best for short trips as there wasn't really any room to spare when we finished.

Best Softside

Samsonite elevation plus carry-on spinner.

This bag is durable and full of smart organizational features.

It can get a little wobbly when turning tight corners.

We frequently recommend Samsonite luggage for its durability and design, and this carry-on is no exception. Voted our favorite bag in our softside luggage test , we were impressed with how well it performed in our tests. After pushing it off a table and hitting it with a baseball bat repeatedly, it showed no signs of damage — not even dirt or minor scuff marks. We rolled this bag over multiple terrains and found that it was easy to maneuver and reroute, although it wobbled a bit during tight turns.

This is a fairly small carry-on, but it fit our entire packing list during testing, although we did have to use some elbow grease to squish the last few things in (but then again, softside suitcases tend to have more flexibility to fit extra items). It comes with external bags to help with organization, which was a thoughtful detail we appreciated. The outside of the bag has two large zipper pockets, while the interior features a two-section pocket that you can detach and reattach with snaps. It also comes with a bag that you can use for shoes or dirty laundry, as well as another flat, removable pocket. The bag even has a built-in space for an Apple AirTag or another small luggage tracker . All the zippers worked well even when it was packed quite full. In the end, we think this is a great option for fans of softside luggage who want a durable bag that will last them a long time.

Most Durable

Travelpro x travel + leisure carry-on spinner.

This 45-liter carry-on survived being dropped and hit by a baseball bat without a single scratch.

It may not fit in some overhead bins if you use the expander.

Durability is important with any bag, and we were impressed with how this 45-liter Travelpro carry-on stood up to being thrown around. Despite being slightly flexible, it was rock-solid when it came to durability, surviving our drop and bat tests without a single scratch. We think this makes an excellent investment for frequent flyers with top-notch organization inside, including two split-case compartments with two separate zippered divider panels, multiple accessory pockets, and a removable pouch. We were also impressed with the quality of the compression straps, which were adjustable and stylish without sacrificing durability. It's also quite spacious, providing plenty of room for our packing list during testing. Plus, it has a generous two-inch expander if you need more room. While some hardside bags are very rigid, we noticed that this one has a bit of give if you do need to pack it extra full.

July Carry On Trunk

We love this trunk for how sleek and stylish it looks while still having useful features like an ejectable power bank and a customizable handle height.

You have to be more intentional about what you pack since the trunk has no expandability.

This stylish carry-on trunk features a clamshell design that opens right down the middle rather than the 30/70 design that many trunks typically have . It feels like a luxury bag thanks to the zipperless clasp closures, ejectable power bank, and multi-stop rubber handle (you can customize the handle to sit at any height you want). We found the trunk super easy to maneuver over different surfaces like carpet and concrete pavers during testing, and it rolled effortlessly on four wheels. When we rolled it on two wheels, it did slow down slightly, but it was still easy to move, and the weight felt evenly distributed through the bag and handle.

The trunk had no scuffs after we pushed it off a counter three times, though it did collect black marks during our real-world travels, but we were able to easily wipe them away without permanent damage. We did manage to give it a few very small dents after hitting the trunk with a baseball bat, but they were barely noticeable. One thing to note is that this trunk has no give because of its hard shell and clasp closures, so you cannot overstuff it, and you have to be more picky with your packing list.

Best With Laptop Compartment

There was some peeling and scratching on the outer material and wheels of the bag after our durability tests.

If you tend to travel with a laptop and other devices, the Samsonite Just Right Carry-on Spinner is especially handy with a tech organizational panel that you can unzip and unfold at the front of the bag to easily store and access your valuables. This panel features a 15-inch laptop sleeve, a padded tablet sleeve, a document sleeve, a wireless charging pocket, a USB charging port, and plenty of zippered storage pockets. There are locks for both the main compartment and the laptop compartment, and the bag also comes with removable packing cubes for additional organization.

Though the suitcase felt a bit heavy after we packed it, it was very easy to maneuver, gliding through turns and different terrains beautifully. It suffered some minor marks after we threw it off counters and hit it with a baseball bat, including some peeling and scratching on the exterior and the wheels. One of the top corners was ever so slightly dented as well, but chances are you’ll stick this carry-on in the overhead bin rather than checking it so it won’t get banged around as much, especially if you have your laptop inside. All of the built-in tech compartments, elastic compression straps, and bonus packing cubes are an excellent way to keep all of your valuables in place.

This unique carry-on has a brake system to prevent it from rolling away.

Choose a darker color if you’re worried about dirt and marks.

If you’ve ever had a bag roll away from you like a runaway train (forcing you to run after it so it doesn’t hit someone), you know it’s a humbling experience. The most noteworthy thing about the Aer Carry-on is that it has a Hinomoto wheel brake system to stop it in its tracks. “It's such a unique feature and helpful if on public transport or stopping on an incline with bags since it securely holds the bag in place,” says T+L associate editorial director Morgan Ashley Parker , who owns this bag. The wheels spin easily and soundlessly, and then you can pop the brake on to stop them from rolling. In fact, Parker says it has “some of the smoothest wheels I've used in a carry-on, even when packed full.” 

The 48-liter capacity is quite large for a carry-on — perfect for those who need all the space they can get — and the bag feels sturdy all-around, from the double-layer zippers to the internal compression system. The top and side handles have a hole to which you can attach other bags and belongings with a carabiner. The bag comes in five colors; we traveled with a white one, and though it got beat up a bit, we were able to buff out most of the scuff marks.

Tumi 19 degree aluminum international carry-on.

This sleek aluminum bag is just as durable as it is beautiful.

Weighing more than 11 pounds, this is heavy for a carry-on.

This stunning Tumi carry-on will make a statement in any airport, with four metallic colors to choose from and a durable aluminum shell to protect your belongings. As the priciest option on this list, you are paying for the Tumi label, but we can confirm that this is a high-quality piece that is worth the investment. This 31-liter bag is on the smaller size for a carry-on — and like most aluminum bags , it feels quite heavy (weighing more than 11 pounds) — but we were impressed by the built-in organization that makes it easy to pack. Both halves of the suitcase have fully zippered closures and compression straps — an ideal combination because you can use the compression straps to get the contents as tightly packed as possible and put less strain on the zippers when you ultimately zip each side closed. There are two smaller zippered flaps on each half of this suitcase so you can fit smaller items in there, as well as an internal card pocket and a hanger bracket to hang garments. We thought the wheels were very sturdy (both when rolling the bag and when hitting the wheels directly with a baseball bat), and the leather-wrapped handles are comfortable to pull. The latches feature two TSA-approved combination locks with push buttons to open them, and you can also monogram the bag with custom initials.

A compression board makes it easy to fit everything into the zippered compartments, and there's a removable laundry bag for dirty clothes.

This suitcase isn't expandable, but it's one of the larger carry-ons we tested.

For highly organized travelers that want to fit a lot in a carry-on, we recommend the Paravel Aviator. After regularly traveling with the bag for six months, we really love the exceptional capacity and organizational features. Even though it's not expandable, the built-in compression board makes it easy to fit everything into the zippered compartments. It also comes with a removable laundry bag for dirty clothes.

Inspired by retro luggage with a modern twist, this classy carry-on is gorgeous. Not only that, but the durable polycarbonate exterior feels sturdy and sustained just a few minor scuffs during our tests. It's super easy to maneuver, too. Although the Paravel Aviator is somewhat steep in price, we think it's a worthwhile investment for those in the market for a high-quality suitcase. While updating your luggage collection, lovers of vintage-inspired design and organization should also consider a train case .

It's on the larger side and may not fit in the overhead bins when packed full.

No traveler wants their stuff to get wet unexpectedly, so be prepared for surprise rainstorms with this carry-on from Rains. Both the hardside shell and the front pocket of this bag are fully waterproof, making this a safe way to transport your belongings. Tough polycarbonate forms the majority of the outer shell, while a padded laptop pocket in the front is made from waterproof PU fabric that can safely store laptops and tablets up to 15 inches. There is also a large strap on the front of the bag that attaches with a buckle closure to keep the front pocket nice and secure.

We found the capacity of this bag to be impressive during testing. The inside compartments were deep enough to fit everything on our packing list, and the mesh dividers allowed plenty of room for things like underwear and socks. Even though there is no expandable feature, we didn't feel like we were tight on space. The compression strap on the other side of the bag helped to pack down clothing and was easy to use. We did notice that when fully packed, this suitcase is a tight squeeze into the overhead compartment on our test plane set, so we would be careful not to overpack it to make sure it fits. The bag rolled smoothly during testing on two wheels and four, and the weight of the suitcase felt evenly distributed. As long as you're mindful of the packed sized of this bag, we think it's a great option for anyone who wants to make sure their things stay dry.

Other Carry-on Bags We Liked

While we tested plenty of high-scoring carry-on bags, there were many items that almost made our list but didn’t quite make the cut due to several weaknesses with maneuverability, capacity, design, durability, and/or overall value revealed during testing. 

Delsey Paris Cruise 3.0 Carry-on : We appreciated the large capacity and expandability of this bag, allowing us to easily fit everything on our packing list. But the wheels are somewhat large, which makes it hard to fit into an overhead bin.

Arlo Skye The Zipper Carry-on Max With Front Pocket : Even though it doesn't expand, this suitcase fit everything on our packing list, did well rolling over bumps, and showed no signs of damage from our bat swings. Plus, like some of the other Arlo Skye luggage pieces , it comes with a removable power bank. While we have few complaints. we were concerned about this bag fitting in the overhead bins.

Samsonite Tru-frame Carry-on Spinner : We loved this carry-on for its futuristic, zipperless design and durability, though it felt a bit more compact than some of the more spacious carry-ons on this list.

July Carry On Pro : We found this suitcase to be aesthetically pleasing, plenty spacious, and easy to maneuver. While the feature-rich design is enticing, it was pretty similar to the Away Carry-on, which compressed a little better.

Calpak Ambeur Front Pocket Carry-on Luggage : This is a stylish option that comes in a handful of metallic colors for under $300. We love that it has a laptop compartment on the front of the suitcase, though it seems to poke out from the suitcase the more we packed it, and we found the zipper of the compartment to be stiff.

Zero Halliburton Classic Aluminum 3.0 International Carry-on : This is one of the most durable suitcases we've ever tested, though it felt a little small for a carry-on. Ultimately we preferred the Tumi option on our main list as our favorite aluminum carry-on.

Away The Softside Bigger Carry-on : This suitcase from popular luggage brand Away 's new softside collection is sleek and stylish, so we have no complaints about the way it looks. The outside material felt durable, and we had no problem fitting all of our things inside, although it is pretty large and heavy for a carry-on bag.

The T+L team performed various luggage tests in our New York City lab to evaluate the capacity, maneuverability, durability, and design of each carry-on. We filled each carry-on bag with enough clothing and essentials for a four-day trip, including six shirts, three pairs of pants, five pairs of socks, five pairs of underwear, two jackets, and two pairs of shoes, plus one small and one large toiletry bag. We then analyzed how well the bags handled the cargo.

After packing them up, we rolled the bags around on different surfaces (when possible) to see how well they maneuvered over pavement and carpet, and we maneuvered them through human obstacle courses to see how they can handle sharp turns in tight spaces. We also recreated an airplane set in our lab to lift the bags into real overhead bins and push them underneath seats. We whacked the fully packed bags with a metal baseball bat and pushed them off a table to see how well they held up to wear and tear.

After testing these bags in the lab, we sent them home with our T+L editors to travel with the bag for a period of six months to continue evaluating the luggage in the real world. Keeping price, size, adjustability, features, and standout quirks in mind, the carry-ons with the highest scores in all testing categories were ultimately chosen for this roundup, and we will continue to update it as we test more carry-ons.

Tips for Buying Carry-on Luggage

Consider hardside vs. softside luggage.

When buying carry-on luggage , you'll see a range of hardside and softside options. Suitcases with hard shells can be better for protecting things from crushing and are generally easy to wipe clean. However, depending on the color and material, they can be prone to scuffing.

Softside luggage, on the other hand, is typically a lighter weight, more flexible if you tend to be an overpacker, and often just as durable as its hardside counterpart. While a textile shell can be trickier to clean, it may not show as much dirt or scuffs either, and it likely won't dent like a hardside bag can. Look for lightweight construction

Lightweight luggage is crucial when choosing a carry-on. Be sure to note the empty weight of the suitcase or bag before buying it, as heftier designs will make a jam-packed carrier all the more cumbersome. Weight affects not only maneuverability, but also your ability to hoist it into the airplane's overhead bin. The wheeled carry-on suitcases we tested ranged in weight from 4.36 to 12.9 pounds. Anything heavier than that is going to be too heavy for many people.

Decide if you want extra organizational features

Some carry-on luggage is relatively basic, with a main compartment and a pocket or two. However, many suitcases, weekenders, and duffel bags have additional organizational features that make packing and accessing your stuff much easier. This may include a laptop sleeve, a shoe separator, a laundry bag, various zippered sections, exterior pockets, and even charging capabilities .

How do you fold a suit without it wrinkling, and pack it into a packing cube in carry-on luggage? Here’s my best foolproof way to pack suit pants and a suit jacket for travel.

Even though I don’t wear suits, I’m typically in charge of packing Dan’s suits so that they look crisp when we attend a wedding in another state or country. Initially, I did a lot of research about how to pack suits for travel, and I came up with my own system that works every time.

At first, I was Googling search queries like “How to fold a suit, “How to fold a suit in the best way,” and, “How to fold a suit so that you avoid wrinkles.” The answers are far and wide and come in the form of videos, articles and lists. In fact, the hardest part is actually folding the dress shirt, but we won’t get into that.

Read on to learn how you can pack your suit to prevent wrinkles and save some space while you’re at it.

Take inventory of your travel suit components first

A suit usually has two pieces, the jacket and the pants. If you’re super fancy, maybe you have a vest, but if you have any experience with suits, you know that these are reserved for tuxedos or for people who truly enjoy wearing suit vests.

Other components of having a suit ready for travel are the following (I write this out as a travel suit checklist because there have been times when we get to our destination and realize Dan is missing an undershirt or a belt… you get it).

• White undershirt (like these white cotton undershirts by Hanes )
• Belt (brown belt for a gray or navy suit, and a black belt for a black suit)
• Suit socks (Dan likes fun socks from time to time, but you can’t beat a pair of versatile gray socks)
• Suit shoes (again, brown dress shoes for a gray or navy suit, and black shoes for a black suit)
• A nice watch to go with your suit
• Dress shirt (we recommend the Bluffworks Zenith wrinkle-free dress shirt )
• A skinny tie that matches your suit outfit, with a backup in case you attend multiple events and stain one with wine, ketchup or hot sauce
• A packing cube for everything to go in (we recommend the BluffCube or any of these packing cubes )

How to pack a suit

Learn the quick steps you need to take to learn how to pack a suit. More detailed information about each step is below!

• Lay flat & button the suit jacket
• Fold the suit jacket in half
• Fold both suit jacket sleeves in
• Fold the jacket thirds, and in thirds again
• Slide the folded suit jacket into a packing cube!
• Start folding the suit pants and zipper them closed
• Hold up the travel suit pants
• Fold them exactly in half
• Fold in the crease seam
• Start the suit pants thirds-folding
• Fold up another third, and finalize
• Slide the folded suit pants a travel packing cube

Suits are tough because they are unlike the things you usually take on a trip: T-shirts, shorts, bathing suits, jeans, joggers , hoodies, etc.

With a suit, you’ll probably either be wearing it at a business event at which you need to look legitimate (industry conferences, client meetings and more), or at a dressy event at which you’ll be in photos (weddings, wedding rehearsal dinners, religious events or services, holidays).

Wrinkles are a traveler’s worst nightmare, especially when the hotel room is missing an iron, you’re staying with a friend who doesn’t believe in irons, or your Airbnb doesn’t have one at all. I actually don’t recall much ironing during trips, and if I needed to iron something, it was definitely one of Dan’s button-down dress shirts .

I learned a few folding rituals from Marie Kondo, and as for the rest of how I pack a suit into a packing cube, I use common sense and see what works time after time, because we travel for weddings so seemingly often.

Here’s the most foolproof way to pack a suit for travel, as shown in these photos of the method that works for us and Dan’s suits for a no-nonsense wrinkle-free result.

Step 1: Lay flat & button the suit jacket

This may sound simple, but trust me: lay the suit out flat so that there are no wrinkles in the back of the jacket. With this step, you’re setting yourself up for success in being cognizant of wrinkles, the size of the garment, and how it folds.

Step 2: Fold the suit jacket in half

I don’t believe in that common method of “turn one sleeve inside out and put it inside the other sleeve.” I think that may work for some people, but it makes me a little uncomfortable. I’m very delicate and respectful of clothes and their builds.

So with step 2, fold the suit in half and make sure that the sleeves match up.

Step 3: Fold both suit jacket sleeves in

Here, fold both sleeves on top of the already halved body of the suit jacket. Be mindful of the crease where the sleeves meet the jacket body.

Step 4: Fold the jacket thirds, and in thirds again

One of my favorite Marie Kondo techniques is the folding in thirds so that clothing does not get too bulky. It also evens out the creasing so that you’re not folding any garment too tightly.

In this step, eyeball a 33% fold, and then another one, so that you are folding the jacket into a small square.

Step 5: Slide the folded suit jacket into a packing cube!

Like we mentioned above, we like the Bluffworks packing cube , which was designed for suit jackets, suit pants and dress shirts. It has some cool features like a compression strap and a side zipper, so it’s really the whole deal.

I find that with the jacket folded into thirds, it slides right into a packing cube so that I have peace of mind.

Step 6: Start folding the suit pants and zipper them closed

We’re ready to start with suit pants now. The first step is to zip up the fly of suit pants so that the fly won’t open and get a weird crease that would totally mess up a group photo at a destination wedding.

Step 7: Hold up the travel suit pants

Yes, that’s it! Just hold them up so that you can assess how much extra fabric there will be to fold, and get the hang of what you’re working with.

Step 8: Fold them exactly in half

This is the beginning of a Marie Kondo move: fold the suit pants exactly in half, and be precise. There is no room for error. Make sure you take the intersection of where both legs meet, and pull it out to pinch flat.

Step 9: Fold in the crease seam

Take that crotch crease and fold it in, ever so slightly. If you’re visual like I am, picture that by folding in this part, you’re creating a completely rectangular shape.

In the build of the pants, this is the only part that is not part of the large rectangle that would otherwise be a perfectly quadrilateral shape of pants shapes.

Step 10: Start the suit pants thirds-folding

Now that you’ve achieved the quadrilateral overall suit pants shape, start folding down the top third.

Step 11: Fold up another third, and finalize

Fold up the second third, and if space permits, fold the suit pants in half so that they fit in the packing cube, and also will not wrinkle.

Step 12: Slide the folded suit pants a travel packing cube

Incredibly, you can get those suit pants into the same packing cube as your suit jacket. If you’re feeling motivated, try to also fold your dress shirt and lay it in its folded form on top of both suit pieces.

How to pack a suit in a backpack

For the times when we’ve only traveled with backpacks (which is often), we’ve had to figure out how to pack a suit into a backpack. Dan uses his Peak Design 45L Travel Backpack for basically every trip we take, whether road trip or flight. It’s a great piece of luggage. One benefit is that it opens clamshell-style, so we can put his packing cubes in and stack them neatly, rather than shoving them into a backpack that opens top-down.

For getting that suit to stay wrinkle-free and neat when folded up for packing, I use the magazine folding method for the dress shirt. I then put the dress shirt into a large packing cube, or if we have a smaller packing cube available, I give the shirt one “hamburger fold” to keep the fold lines straight.

For the suit pants, I tuck in the inseam and do a quadruple fold, ensuring that all the pants lines stay neat and lined up. I put the pants into a packing cube with one of Dan’s ties, folded up neatly.

For the suit jacket, I fold it in half vertically, and line up the arms, folding them in. Luckily with the Bluffworks suit jackets, they don’t wrinkle, so they help keep us low-stress when we know we have a wedding to attend and we may not have time to iron everything.

With all parts of the suit going into packing cubes , we stack those in Dan’s backpack and everything arrives without wrinkles at our destination. If you have a top-loading backpack, make sure your packing cubes stay flat, rather than sagging or collapsing, which might wrinkle up the suit components.

Keep improving on your travel suit-packing skills

Based on the size of your suit and its material, you will probably need to experiment and find the best way to pack your suit and its accessories. This is far from a one-size-fits-all process, just like suits themselves, which need to be altered and fitted periodically over time.

As promised, we’re going to dive into the best travel suit that will guarantee you a wrinkle-free pack.

Having an anti-wrinkle suit has done Dan rather well in weddings we’ve attended in Los Angeles, Chicago and even our own wedding in New Jersey (we did have to transport the suit from NYC to NJ, after all, and it certainly got packed up!).

Last idea for avoiding wrinkles: wear your suit instead of packing it

Sometimes the easiest method is the one that’s been staring right at you: you don’t need to pack your suit if you wear it during your travel day.

If you’re flying, you can wear your suit directly on the plane. You may want to pack a fresh shirt or wear a nice T-shirt instead, because some people sweat on planes or get smelly.

This might be another plug for my favorite travel suit, but quite honestly, if you were to wear the Bluffworks Gramercy suit on a plane, you’d probably walk off that plane in a wrinkle-free suit. I’m not joking. It’s hard to believe, but this suit just won’t wrinkle or crease! It’s incredible that it looks great 100% of the time.

Best ways to pack your travel suit, a conclusion

A final way to take your suit on a trip would be to bag it up in a tote so that it doesn’t get compressed among your luggage. I can see this being a backdoor route to avoiding both packing it into a compressed packing cube and/or wearing the suit on the flight.

To conclude, here are our three ways to avoid wrinkles by taking a suit on a trip:

• Use the 12-step method to fold up the suit into a travel packing cube
• Wear the suit on a plane (or train, bus or car ride)
• Loosely fold a suit into a tote bag so that it doesn’t get too compressed

How to Safely Transport a Suit on an Airplane

Being a victorious road warrior (aka business traveler) isn't easy. In addition to grappling with air travel logistics and different airports, you must demonstrate the ability to quickly and effectively carry your suit on an airplane without getting overly wrinkled. The stakes can be elevated to higher levels when you have a business meeting or function short after landing.

Should I Check-In My Suit on an Airplane?

Above all, you should avoid checking your luggage if it has a suit. Without a doubt, the best way to transport a suit on an airplane is with a premium garment bag . Whether you're traveling by bus, air, or car, the garment bag is designed to protect your suit, prevent wrinkles, and make transportation easy. 

Best of all, garment bags naturally allow you to hang your suit to prevent wrinkles safely. However, hanging your outfit may not always be an option on an airplane. To determine if your airline offers suit hanging capabilities, make sure you ask about its carry-on luggage restrictions. Another less-desirable option is to lightly fold the bag in half and place it in the overhead compartment. 

Transporting a Suit on an Airplane in Luggage

There are multiple ways to effectively, efficiently, and safely fold your suit for travel . The wrong way, however, is to wait 15 minutes before leaving for the airport to stuff everything inside of your suitcase. Instead, you can use the following steps to fold your suit and focus on saving space thoughtfully:

• Start by laying your suit jacket face down on a solid surface, such as a table or desk. Before laying the coat down, make sure to button the top button. 
• Fold the left shoulder of the jacket back, which will make the left lapel face upward. Then, fold the sleeve over to ensure the cuff's top corner meets the jacket's front. 
• Turn the jacket's right shoulder inside-out and then secure the left shoulder inside of it. After you turn the shoulder inside out, the inside of the jacket's right side should face upward. 
• Fold your jacket in half vertically and then fold it in half horizontally. When you fold the jacket lengthwise, the right and left shoulders should align. Make sure to wrap the bottom under the top when you fold it horizontally. 
• Place the folded jacket in the center of your slacks or trousers, so they cover the pants midway down the leg. 
• Fold your pants over the jacket by starting at the bottom, folding the trouser's waist over the bottoms. Finally, place the entire folded suit securely in a garment bag or garment cover to safely transport your outfit on an airplane.  

If this method doesn't suit your fancy, you can discover several alternative ways through a quick Internet search. In either case, once you've finished folding, you can confidently place your garments in a suitcase. 

You Successfully Traveled with a Suit on an Airplane...Now  What?

When you arrive at your destination, you should quickly remove your suit from the suitcase and immediately hang it up. Most quality fabrics will promptly return to their regular lengths. As an added measure, you can hang your suit up in the bathroom as you shower to allow the steam to release any wrinkles it may have collected.

Another option is to call up the concierge and request they give your suit a proper steam treatment. One thing you should understand that even after you've transported your suit on an airplane and it has developed wrinkles, most outfits will come back to life after being hung up overnight.

Do Garment Bags Count as Carry-on? [The Definitive Answer + Tips]

If you’re heading off to an important business conference and you need your suit looking as immaculate as you got it from the dry cleaners, you need to bring it in a garment bag for your flight. But, do garment bags count as carry-on (and will airlines be forcing you to pay for everything else as checked baggage)? We set about investigating this dilemma to bring you a definitive answer.

So, do garment bags count as carry-on luggage? Garment bags don’t usually count as part of the carry-on allowance for air travel . The baggage specifications provided by many airlines allow for garment bags to be carried as hand luggage, meaning you can still bring your rolling bag luggage and stow it away on the overhead bin (or the space provided under the seat).

Here are two of the best garment bags we could find in our experience and research:

To ensure your garment bag fits the provision for personal “hand” luggage on a flight, you need to ensure the dimensions and weight of the contents meet the recommendations provided by the specific airline you are flying on.

We went through the websites of dozens of airlines, combing through their baggage guidelines to determine when garment bags count as carry-on luggage. Not once did we come across an airline service that restricts travelers to a single item of onboard luggage.

In most cases, however, you are only allowed two pieces of luggage : one you can carry in your hands (i.e. a personal item – this is one of the most versatile we’ve found ) and another one you can keep on the overhead luggage bin or beneath the seat (i.e., the carry-on).

This can make it tricky if you are traveling for business and need to bring along rolling bag luggage, a laptop bag, and a garment bag for your suit. In that case, your garment bag (or any of the other 2 pieces of luggage) will have to be taken as checked luggage.  

5 tips to avoid having your garment bag count as carry-on or checked baggage

With some commonsense precautions and planning, you can avoid the inconvenience and expense of having a garment bag (or some other essential item) taken as part of checked baggage on a flight.

Here are the 5 most effective ways to avoid paying for your garment bag as part of checked baggage.  

Some rolling luggage concepts are designed to help you carry your suit in a compartment that ensures it doesn’t generate creases. In fact, some come with an internal or removable garment bag that is big enough for one or two suits. Such versatile designs add even more convenience, as you do not have to check into your flight toting two or more pieces of onboard luggage.

Some airlines make provisions for travelers who need to keep their suits in pristine condition. They offer a closet, usually located at the front of the plane near the cockpit, where you can hang your business suit in its bag.   

Garment bags are not built for the rugged nature of baggage taken on as freight. However, in some cases, you may have no choice but to check it in as you board the flight.

If that is the case, ensure you go for a model built to withstand rough treatment without jeopardizing the pristine condition of your dry-cleaned and neatly-pressed suit. Such garment bags are made to be as sturdy as an ordinary travel suitcase.  

Today you can buy suits made of a material that is resilient enough to avoid developing creases and wrinkles even when folded up. However, this may mean going for suits that are made from a large proportion of synthetic materials.

Many business travelers consider such suits not impressive enough to wear on a business trip. However, if you don’t fall within that line of thought, a wrinkle-free suit can be safely stowed away with the rest of your travel gear and be none the worse for it.  

With a portable garment steamer, you do not have to worry about unsightly creases and wrinkles on your clothes – even if you do not carry them in a garment bag. The steamer effectively smoothes out every wrinkle and crease, leaving your suit as pristine as when it came from the dry cleaner.

There is an important catch for using a garment steamer, though. While it is useful enough to make wrinkles disappear, a steamer is not an adequate substitute for actually dry cleaning and pressing your clothes.  

5 essential packing tips to avoid luggage nightmares

With a little ingenuity, creativity, and plain common-sense precautions, you can maximize the space in your carry-on bag such that you do not need to check any luggage on your flight. If all you are traveling with is the carry-on and whatever personal item you have in your hands, there is no way the airline can lose your luggage .

Here are 5 quick tips that’ll save you from going through the trouble or spending extra money by using the permitted carry-on luggage allowance more efficiently.  

While a garment bag is the best solution for ensuring your newly pressed suit arrives spick-and-span post-flight, it is still possible to pack your suits in ordinary luggage in a way that doesn’t result in unsightly wrinkles.

To accomplish this, you should consider rolling your clothes instead of folding them. Moreover, rolled clothes take considerably less space compared to folded ones.

A lot of the problems air travelers face with baggage can be avoided simply by going over your airline’s luggage policy. Even if you booked your flight through a travel agency, you’re still responsible for looking through their requirements.

Airlines provide detailed luggage guidelines on their websites. Some guidelines could also be printed on the back of your ticket. However, for the most detailed information, as well as any caveats you should be aware of, it is best to check the website.  

Always pack your luggage according to how long you will be away from home. Even then, you can avoid taking non-essential items that may easily be obtained at the destination without causing you inconvenience or extra costs.

Items that best fit this description include toiletries and stationery. Furthermore, only take items of clothing you will need, keeping in mind that the outfit you travel in should be part of your wardrobe at the destination, too.

As you pack your carry-on luggage, remember that keeping it within the airline’s weight and size restrictions do not guarantee that you won’t have to check it at the gate. On some rare occasions, carry-on luggage has to be checked in if the plane is very full or if you have to fly on a smaller plane than originally scheduled.

As such, always keep essential items, such as your travel documents, pricey electronics, and any medication in a hand-held bag that you can have on your lap during the flight. While there are many travel hacks that give you tips on how to pack as many clothes as possible in your luggage, most of these methods will result in a creased shirt. So, how do you carry your suit on a plane without causing it to get creased?

Follow these steps for the proper way to pack a suit for plane travel.

Get the Right Travel Bag

There’s no use trying to pack a suit for plane travel if you have a bag that’s too small or the wrong type. If you’re using a carry-on pack or suitcase, make sure it’s big enough so you don’t have to fold or roll the suit when packing. However, avoid heavy suitcases as you may not be allowed to carry them with your hand luggage, which can waste precious time when traveling.

However, if you want to travel light and avoid creasing your shirt, then you’ll need a garment bag. These bags are designed for individual suits and prevent the suit from getting creased. In this post I will give you an overview and the best practices on how to travel with your suit and ensure it stays in good shape throughout your journey.

How Do I Take My Suit Through TSA?

The TSA didn’t specifically mention anything about suits on its website.

But you can obviously bring your suit even with a hanger through the security checkpoint without any issues ( see the screenshot below ).

It is preferable If you transport your suit in a garment bag and take it on board.

Wearing your suit during a long flight is not advisable as it can lead to wrinkles and discomfort even when going through the security checkpoint.

Alternatively, you can also roll your suit and place it inside your suitcase, if you use a hard-sided suitcase, that’s an advantage so it will help keep your folded suit in shape until you get to your destination.

Does a Suit Count As a Carry-on?

If you wonder whether a suit carrier or garment bag will count as hand luggage? The answer is yes, but it will depend mostly on the size of your garment bag.

A garment bag or a suit carrier will be counted as your carry-on luggage in most airlines, so it needs to be within your airline’s size and weight limits.

Most airlines will count your garment bags as a carry on.

Like in the screenshot below, when KarenLee husband wanted to bring a suit in a garment bag on an AA flight.

The AA team replied that he can take a soft-sided garment bag up to 51 inches as a carry-on item.

The same rules apply with JetBlue.

JetBlue replied to Cara that wedding dresses , suits or Tuxedos must meet the baggage requirements because planes do not have closets or hanging clothing for suits.

JetBlue carry-on must not exceed 22″ x 14″ x 9″ and all carry-on items must fit in the overhead storage compartment, and the personal items size is 17 in x 13 in x 8 in and must fit under the seat in front of you (Use this luggage calculator for other airlines ).

How To Pack And Bring a Suit On a Plane?

Is it OK to pack a suit in a suitcase? Yes, by rolling or folding it.

Folding your suit for a flight is a bit tricky if you are not familiar with it, here are some easy steps to follow:

• Lay trousers flat on a flat surface.
• Take the jacket turn both shoulder inside out and tuck them in
• Fold the jacket in half, make sure the lapels meet each other
• Place the jacket on top the trousers and fold the top and bottom halves together
• Fold the bottom half of the trousers over the jacket
• Fold the top of the jacket over the trousers

TIP: it is preferable to not pack any other items on top of your suit that may create extra weight as they will cause wrinkles, and once you reach your destination ensure that you take your suit out and hang it.

Can You Pack a Suit In a Backpack?

You can use a backpack instead of a suitcase if you want to travel light as it is smaller, easy to carry and minimizes excess baggage charges, and the hassle of a garment bag.

In addition the backpack also will have a compartment to carry your shoes and ties.

Using a backpack, even on a business trip, is more versatile and is getting trendy.

However, it is advised to take your suit out immediately upon arrival, this will minimize any wrinkles and will make it easy to de-wrinkle .

Now as you know that flying with a suit is as easy as pie.

This will help you decide which tip you are going to use. I prefer to fold my suit and place it inside my suitcase.

But if you prefer rolling your suit, tightly rolling it will allow for much more compact packing. It won’t take longer and you will be able to fit more clothes in your bag and reduce checked baggage fees.

Jason Kelce  did not disappoint with his Monday Night Football debut.

During the Monday, Sept. 9 broadcast, Kelce, 36, revealed a wardrobe mishap before the San Francisco 49ers took on the New York Jets at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clarita, Calif. The 49ers defeated the Jets 32-19.

After listing off Kelce's achievements - including winning a Super Bowl and co-hosting a successful podcast, New Heights with brother Travis Kelce - Scott Van Pelt told viewers that the former Philadelphia Eagles star was wearing a shirt he picked up from the mall earlier that day.

“All that said, Jason Kelce is wearing a shirt he got at the mall because he left his travel bag in the truck," Van Pelt said.

“It fits my belly now. I've lost a little bit of weight, but my tits are still struggling,” Jason replied.

Fellow commentator Ryan Clark replied, “The fact that a Hall of Fame center can shop at LuluLemon. That's big, man. That's a big accomplishment.”

ESPN shared the clip on Instagram , inviting fans of the retired Eagles player to join the joke, including Jason's brother.

"Surprised he even bought a new one, and didn’t just go shirtless," Travis wrote, referring to Kelce cheering for the Kansas City Chiefs shirtless during a playoff game in January .

The Instagram account for the brothers’ podcast also commented, playing into a previous joke about Jason forgetting a different piece of clothing.

“Why didn’t Jason bring a shirt for Jason?” read the New Heights comment.

The cheeky comment from the podcast follows the viral moment of Jason and Travis discussing Jason’s appearance at the Kelce premiere — the documentary following his 2022-23 season.

During the Sept. 13, 2023 podcast episode, Jason recalled for his brother, 34, that his casual attire was because his wife, Kylie, “was running late” and she was going to “bring the jeans.”

JetBlue's new ticket policy entitles every passenger to a carry-on bag

JetBlue customers will now get a free carry-on bag regardless of what tier of ticket they purchased. As of Friday, Blue Basic fares, JetBlue's basic economy bundle, will include a carry-on bag, even if the passenger purchased their ticket in advance.

Previously, JetBlue passengers had to purchase a more expensive ticket bundle or pay an extra fee to carry on an overhead bin sized bag with a Blue Basic ticket.

“Carry-on bags are an important part of travel to customers, and when presented with a choice between JetBlue’s award-winning service and another carrier’s basic offering, we want JetBlue to be the easy winner,” Marty St. George, JetBlue's president, said in a statement . “We’re always looking for ways to evolve our offering in response to customer preferences. This is a win-win as we improve the customer experience and keep JetBlue competitive in our industry.”

JetBlue's Blue Basic fares are still the most restrictive ticket option the airline sells. Although it now includes a free carry-on bag, it does not include free checked luggage or advanced seat selection. Blue Basic tickets also incur a $100 cancellation fee.
