The Greek islands are among my absolute favorite summer destinations in Europe and I’ve done several Greek island hopping trips over the last years. That’s why I’m thrilled to share the perfect 3-week Cyclades Island hopping itinerary with you, featuring the absolute highlights and the must-visit islands you won’t want to miss, along with some alternative routes for 7, 10, and 14 days if you’re short on time!

How to Get to the Cyclades Islands

If you’re traveling internationally, flying to Athens is often the most convenient starting point. From Athens, you can easily connect to the Cyclades Islands via domestic flights or ferries.

💡 I highly recommend adding a 2-day visit to Athens to your Greece itinerary if you haven’t explored the capital city yet.

Additionally, several Cyclades Islands, such as Mykonos and Santorini, have their own airports, allowing for direct flights from major European cities. Flying directly to Mykonos is ideal if you’re short on time, as this is the first stop on our itinerary.

Alternatively, taking a ferry from Athens’ Port of Piraeus offers a scenic route and allows you to experience the beauty of the Aegean Sea while saving some money, as ferry tickets from Athens are often more economical compared to flight tickets.

How to Travel Between the Cyclades Islands?

When it comes to traveling between the Cyclades Islands, ferries are undoubtedly the best choice. With their frequent schedules and routes connecting all Cycladic islands, ferries offer the best flexibility and convenience.

Tip: I recommend booking your ferry tickets in advance, especially during the peak tourist season. This way, you can secure the best departure times and prices, plus avoid any last-minute hassles, ensuring a stress-free island hopping experience in the Cyclades.

We absolutely enjoyed traveling by ferry in Greece because the ferries are very comfortable, provide scenic views, and offer a seamless way to hop from one island to another. Despite being slightly more expensive, we always opt for speed ferries, as they allow us to maximize our time on the islands.

How to Get Around on the Cyclades Islands

While public transportation options such as buses are available on most Cyclades Islands, I highly recommend renting a car for the ultimate freedom and flexibility. A rental car allows you to explore the islands at your own pace and maximize your time.

During our visits, we rented a car on every islands and found it to be the perfect way to navigate the diverse landscapes and attractions – especially considering the Cyclades’ sometimes windy conditions, which may not always be ideal for alternatives like scooters or ATVs.

Renting a car is very easy and straightforward on the Cyclades Islands, and gives you easy access to even the most remote areas of the islands. This way you can discover off-the-beaten-path places, authentic local towns, and secluded beaches, which you often cannot easily reach by public transportation.

Best Time to Visit the Cyclades Islands

The best time to visit the Cyclades largely depends on your preferences and the islands you plan to visit. While the peak summer months of July and August offer warm weather and a bustling atmosphere, they also bring along large crowds and higher prices.

For a more relaxed experience, I recommend visiting during the shoulder seasons – either at the beginning or the end of the peak travel season. In my opinion, the best months to visit the Cyclades are May, June, and September. During these times, the weather remains pleasant, the tourist crowds are smaller, and accommodation prices are more affordable.

This allows for a more authentic experience, where you can fully immerse yourself in the local culture and enjoy the stunning landscapes without the hustle and bustle of peak season. Plus, you’ll have more flexibility in booking accommodations and activities, making it easier to create your ideal Cyclades adventure.

Please keep in mind that the off-season, typically between mid-October and mid-April, isn’t ideal for island hopping in the Cyclades. During this time, ferries run less frequently or may even be suspended on some routes. Additionally, it’s more challenging to find accommodations, restaurants, and shops, as many of them are closed during the off-season.

Complete 3-Week Cyclades Island Hopping Itinerary

The Cyclades Island of Mykonos is known for its lively atmosphere, traditional Cycladic architecture, beautiful beaches, and cosmopolitan charm. It’s one of the most popular islands in the Aegean Sea and offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and relaxation.

In the Old Town of Mykonos, also known as Chora, you can wander through narrow alleys lined with whitewashed buildings, small boutiques, and vibrant bougainvillea, while soaking in the quintessential Greek atmosphere.

Must-visit spots include the Old Port, Little Venice, with its colorful balconies overlooking the sea, the famous windmills of Mykonos, and the iconic Panagia Paraportiani Church.

Mykonos is also renowned for its stunning beaches and lively beach bars, so make sure to include some relaxation time at the beach during your time in Mykonos.

As evening falls, Mykonos comes alive with its legendary nightlife. I recommend indulging in a dinner at a seafront restaurant, embarking on a sunset boat cruise , and experiencing the vibrant club scene.

Paros, a gem in the heart of the Cyclades, is famous for its traditional villages, beautiful landscapes, and crystal-clear waters. The island boasts some of the best beaches in the Cyclades. Paros is hands down one of my favorite islands in Greece!

One of the highlights of Paros is the charming fishing village of Naoussa, with its picturesque harbor and vibrant waterfront lined with lovely tavernas and cafes. I especially loved getting lost in the labyrinthine alleyways of Naoussa. The small town exudes a laid-back atmosphere that’s truly captivating!

Make sure to also visit Parikia, the capital of Paros, as well as the picturesque mountain villages of Lefkes, Kostos, Prodromos, and Marpissa for a glimpse into authentic island life.

If you are a beach lover, I recommend exploring Paros’ magnificent beaches, such as Golden Beach, Monastiri Beach, or Kolymbithres Beach. Kolymbithres Beach is known for its crystal-clear waters and unique rock formations and belongs to my favorite beaches in the Cyclades.

No trip to Paros would be complete without visiting Antiparos, the small sister island of Paros. Accessible via a quick 10-minute ferry ride, Antiparos features a charming Old Town and a breathtaking coastline with the most stunning, untouched beaches.

One of the island’s main draws is its stunning beaches, such as Mylopotas Beach and Manganari Beach, which boast golden sands and azure waters ideal for swimming and sunbathing.

The Cyclades Island of Tinos is known for its religious significance, traditional architecture, authentic atmosphere, and unspoiled beauty. If you’re planing a trip to Greek Islands, then you definitely have to visit Santorini! It’s by far the most famous and visited island in the Cyclades archipelago.

Sure, you will probably spend some time waiting in line to take THE perfect picture of its iconic white church with a blue dome you can see on every postcard. And when you will go admire the sunset, it can be hard to find a good spot in the middle of the crowd. But once there, you will see that it’s clearly worth it: the volcanic island of Santorini is truly magnificent!

Also, doing the Caldera hike from Fira to Oia to admire the breathtaking panoramic views from the villages is clearly a must-see attraction during your itinerary in the Cyclades.

The best things to do in Santorini are:

• Fira: you can go to the top of the caldera and enjoy the many viewpoints over Santorini. From Fira, walk for 30 minutes to reach Firostefani and Imerovigli villages. And if you want to enjoy the shops, restaurants and cafés, you can go to Golden Street.
• Imerovigli: often nicknamed the balcony of Santorini, this village is located at the top of the caldera, 300 meters above the sea.
• Oia: it’s clearly the best place to admire the sunset. When walking in Oia’s alleys, you will take beautiful typical pictures of Santorini!
• Black Beach: a volcanic black sand beach
• Red Beach, named after the ochre cliffs surrounding it
• Nea Kamini: you can do a boat-trip around this volcano, and swim in the hot springs
• The archaeological site of Akrotiri, one of the most important in Greece.

Santorini is clearly the best Cyclades island to visit for couples or during a honeymoon.

If you want to admire the sunset in Oia, you should get there at least 1 or 2 hours before. Once you’ve found the perfect spot, keep it carefully!

Mykonos is the perfect island to party in the Cyclades. With more than 1 million tourists every year, it is, along with Santorini, the other most visited Cyclades island.

On the island, you can party all day and night long with world famous DJs! If you want to enjoy Mykonos, don’t forget to plan a significant budget as the prices can be really high, especially in summer.

Mykonos is also famous for its beaches, considered as some of Greece’s most beautiful. Once more, you won’t find any small cove to take a dip and stay alone. In Mykonos, going to the beach means enjoying hip techno bars and jet-setters on their yachts!

If you’re looking for this kind of party atmosphere, you should go to the beaches of Elia, Paradise, Super Paradise or Psarou.

If you want to go on a trip with your friends in the Cylades, Mykonos is the best destination for you.

Delos is a small uninhabited island.

To get there, you have to take the boat from Mykonos. As it’s forbidden to spend the night on the island, you can only visit it during a 4-hour tour.

Delos is famous for its ancient archaeological site. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was considered as Apollo’s and Artemis’ birthplace. Then, it became dedicated to the worship of the gods. The oldest temples were built during the 8th century B.C.

Here are the best places to see when you visit Delos, in the Cyclades:

• The temple of the Delians: the biggest temple dedicated to Apollo
• The Terrace of the Lions , and its alignment of Lion’s statues along an alley
• The Sacred Lake, where Apollo is said to be born
• The Sanctuary of Apollo
• The Sanctuary of Dionysus
• The temple of the Athenians
• The House of Dionysus
• The House of Masks
• The House of the Dolphins
• The Archaeological Museum

You can visit Delos without a guide, but doing a guided visit is clearly the best way to enjoy the place . As there are many remains and monuments on the island, the guide will help you understand what you’re seeing and give you historical explanations.

Located in the heart of the Cyclades, Paros is known for its many sand beaches, beautiful nature landscape and typical villages. In Ancient times, Paros was also renowned for its high-quality marble, used for many masterpieces, such as the “Venus de Milo”!

The best places of interest to visit in Paros are:

• Parikia, the capital. Don’t miss its churches and the Kastro.
• Naoussa, a fishing village with chic small shops and restaurants.
• Lefkes: a remote mountain village, famous for its magnificent view over the sea. From the village, take a stroll on the 3km-long Byzantine trail that goes from Lefkes to Podromos, through the olive trees.
• The port of Piso Livadi, where you can eat great fresh grilled fish.
• Paros Park: walk along the 3 marked trails, and discover the nice view of the coast and the lighthouse. There, you can also enjoy a really beautiful beach with shallow water.

From Paros, it’s really easy to reach Antiparos, the small island located right in front. The ferry takes only 10 minutes to go from Pounta town to Antiparos, and you can even cross with your rental car. In summer, you can also reach Antiparos from Parikia (without your car this time!)

In Antiparos, there aren’t many things to do: just relax, enjoy the beaches and take a stroll in the main village. You can also visit the Cave of Antiparos, and admire Europe’s most ancient stalagmite.

Naxos is the biggest island in the Cyclades. There, you can enjoy many beautiful beaches and discover remote mountain villages.

Here are the best things to do in Naxos:

• Chora of Naxos: the island’s main city. Walk in the Kastro district, discover the Old Market alleys and admire the Portara (at the port entrance).
• Filoti: a picturesque mountain village.
• Halki: another mountain village. From there, you can walk on many marked trails. Don’t miss the church, accessible by a 10-minute walk through the olive trees! (just follow the signs).
• Apiranthos: another pretty mountain village. Take a stroll in its alleys, and enjoy its small museums.
• The Kouros of Apollonas: a 10-meter high statue of Dionysus or Apollo.
• The hike to reach the summit of Mount Zeus, the highest point of Naxos.

And if you want to enjoy the best beaches in Naxos, you can try:

• Agiassos: a large and quite wild beach, with many parking spaces and a tavern.
• Between Agiassos and Pyrgaki, you will find 3 small sand coves. The place is really beautiful and quiet. It’s perfect to take a dip.
• Pyrgaki: a vast sand beach.
• Kastraki: another large beach, with a view of Paros.
• Mikri Vigla: 2 windy beaches (south and north) and a great spot for kitesurf.
• Agia Anna: a thin sand beach. There, you can choose between the public beach, and the private one with deckchairs and umbrellas.
• Agios Prokopios: an half private/half public beach. During my stay in Naxos, it was the most crowded.

What is the best Cyclades Island to go hiking?

This island is renowned for its many marked walking trails. For example, you can hike from the Monastery of Chozoviotissa to the village of Potamos, or reach the Timios Stavros Chapel from the village of Langada. These 2 hikes are among the most famous in Amorgos.

You can also follow a 9-km long marked trail to discover 3 beautiful villages: Potamos, Langada and Tholaria.

Besides hiking, here are the best places to see in Amorgos:

• Chora, Amorgos’ capital. A very beautiful village, with several cafés and typical restaurants. Enjoy your stroll, and walk up to the ancient windmills located above the village.
• Katapola and Aegiali: the island’s 2 ports, with a few shops and restaurants.
• The spectacular Byzantine Monastery of Panagia Chozoviotissa, built under a high cliff and overlooking the sea.
• Agia Anna cove, a very small rocky beach. The area is very photogenic thanks to the small white chapel nearby.
• Mouros Beach, sheltered from the wind.
• Kalotaritissia: it’s for me the most beautiful beach in Amorgos! You will love its fine sand and turquoise waters.
• The ship wreck of “The Big Blue” movie. As you may know, a part of this movie with Jean Reno was filmed in Amorgos.

Syros is the administrative centre, the capital and most populated island of the Cyclades, even if it is one of the smallest one!

When walking down Ermoupoli, Syros’ main city, you will discover a few neoclassical buildings including the city hall , located around Miaouli Square. Don’t miss the Municipal Theatre “Apollo”: it looks like a small replica of “La Scala”, in Milan !

Then, take a stroll in Vaporia district, located on the Eastern side of Ermoupoli. There, you will admire many beautiful neoclassical mansions.

The other best things to see in Syros includes:

• The village of Ano Syros, and its numerous viewpoints, churches and monasteries.
• Azolimnos Beach, located close to Ermoupoli.
• Galissas: from there, you can walk to the top of the hill, and enjoy a great panoramic view over the village.
• Finikas Beach, a sand beach with many tourists!
• The beaches of Kini, Delfini, Aetos and Lia.

The volcanic island of Milos is famous for its coastline: the strange rock formations and high cliffs plunging down to the sea are really breathtaking!

You may not know it, but Milos offers the largest number of beaches in all the Cyclades.

However, the interior of the island is unfortunately less interesting, as mining is highly developed: Milos is the first place of extraction of perlite and bentonite in the European Union.

The best places to visit in Milos, in the Cyclades, are:

• Adamas, Milos’ main port, with numerous restaurants and hotels.
• Plaka: the best place to admire the sunset in Milos, and the starting point of beautiful hikes.
• Klima and its lovely colored fishermen’s houses, directly carved into the cliff.
• Tripiti and its view over the gulf.
• The Roman Theatre: there, a farmer discovered the famous “Venus de Milo”, exposed at the Louvre, in Paris.

As I said earlier, Milos is also renowned for its magnificent beaches. With white rocks and transparent waters, Sarakiniko beach is for sure the most famous! You can also enjoy the beaches of Kiriaki, Provatas or Papafragas.

And if you want to try Milos’ must-see attraction, just do a boat-trip around the island to admire its many strange rock formations. During this tour, you will also discover a lot of beaches and coves inaccessible by car such as Kleftiko beach.

Many cruises are available in Milos: with different stops, on small or large motor boats, yachts or even catamarans. Choose according to your preferences and budget! The prices are starting from 35€ per person.

If you’re looking for a luxury boat trip , you should have a look at this one. The value for money is outstanding!

Tinos is one of the major pilgrimage site for Orthodox Greeks. Every year, thousands of people are coming there to pray at Panagia Megalochari or Evangelistria churches.

Even if you’re not much into religion, there are many beautiful places to see on Tinos. Here are some of the best places to visit on this Cyclades island:

• Hora , the capital city. Its church, built with Tinos white marble, is truly beautiful. You can also enjoy many boutiques and restaurants.
• The monastery of Kechrovouni, organized like a small village, with several houses.
• Volax: a small village, surrounded by large round grey rocks.
• Kardiani: the village and the road to get there offers many beautiful views over the bay and the beaches below.
• Pyrgos, Tinos’ largest village, renowned for its marble.
• Panormos, a really cute port, with many restaurants on the seaside.
• Tarambados, and its famous pigeon towers.
• Kolimbithra with its 2 nice sand beaches.

If you want to hike in the Cyclades, but also enjoy beautiful beaches, then Andros is the perfect island for you.

There are 18 marked trails of various length (from 30 minutes to 6 hours) and difficulty level (easy or moderate) on the island. The easiest way to plan your hikes it to get the Andros hiking map, in one of the souvenir shops.

The other best things to see in Andros are:

• Gavrio: the port where you will arrive, with restaurants and boutiques.
• Batsi: a cute seaside resort and a nice beach.
• Andros, the capital city: just take a stroll in the main street, down to the bridge and the small island.
• Apikia, the starting point of many hikes.
• Felos beach: a large and pretty shingle beach located in a bay
• The many sand beaches on the road between Gavrio and Batsi: Agios Petros, Chrissi Amnos, Kipri.

Ios can be considered as Mykonos’ little sister. If you want to enjoy an incredible atmosphere and party all night long , it’s clearly a great place to visit.

On Ios, your program will be quite simple: during the day, just relax at the beach and get some rest. Then, when the night comes, party until sunrise in the island’s many trendy bars! Most people coming to Ios are rather young and from Northern Europe.

In Ios, you will enjoy the best nightlife in summer, between June and September.

And if you want to take a dip, there are many beautiful beaches on the island. For example, you can try Mylopotas Beach, Kalamos Beach or Manganari Beach.

Sifnos is mostly renowned for its ceramics and fine cuisine. The food there is known to be among the best in the Cyclades!

The island is also famous for being an hiker’s paradise.

There are nearly 100 km of marked trails and a dozen itineraries around the island. From a short walk to a really long hike, you will always find a trail that suits you. Once on the island, don’t forget to buy the marked trails Map for 5€.

One of the best hikes on the island goes from Apollonia to Mount Profitis Ilias. Another great itinerary goes from Artemonas to the Panagia Poulati Monastery and the village of Kastro.

The best things to do and see in Sifnos are:

• Kamares: the ferries’ port of arrival. If you’re on a family trip, you will love its beautiful beach with shallow water, it’s ideal with children.
• Apollonia, the capital city, is a real labyrinth of alleys full of small shops, restaurants and cafés.
• Artemonas, one of the most beautiful villages in Sifnos with its typical Venetian houses.
• Kastro: a medieval village.
• Faros: a small fishing port. From there, you can walk to the Chrisopigi Monastery.
• Plati Gialos Beach, the longest sand beach in all the Cyclades archipelago!

You’re looking for peace and quiet during your holidays in the Cyclades? Then, you should definitely go to Serifos.

Serifos isn’t really a tourist place. There, you will have plenty of time to enjoy the island’s mountains and arid hills.

During your stay in Serifos, you can visit:

• The port of Livadi
• The beautiful Livadakia Beach
• Hora, the capital
• Moni Taxiarchon Monastery
• Panagia village and enjoy its views over the plains
• The beaches of Karavi, Avlomonas, Lia, Agios Sostis and Psili Amnos

In Folegandros, you will discover one of the most beautiful villages of the Cyclades. Hora is a typical Cycladic village, with white and blue houses and lively squares. Don’t forget to go to the church above the village to enjoy a beautiful panorama of the island.

There are also many beaches in Folegandros, but the most beautiful ones are only accessible by foot or by boat. If you want to discover them, you can do a 1-day boat trip around the island with many stops to take a dip!

The Small Cyclades are a group of islands located between Naxos and Amorgos.

It’s a small archipelago of 4 islands inhabited islands (and dozens of smaller ones). Here are the main islands:

• Iraklia: accessible by boat from Amorgos, Naxos or Paros. If you want to hike and enjoy the calm, it’s the place to visit!
• Schinousa is famous for its beaches. You can get there from Amorgos, Iraklia, Naxos and Paros.
• Koufonisia and it’s amazing beaches is becoming more and more famous every year
• Donousa: just relax at the beach, or enjoy beautiful strolls on this calm island.

Travelling to the Cyclades

During your Cyclades itinerary , you will take the ferry at least once, unless you’ve chosen to visit only Santorini or Mykonos and took the plane to get there.

• During high season, the ferries offer many connections between all the Cyclades Islands.
• In winter however (low season starts in November), there aren’t many boats.

If you want to reach the Cyclades from Central Greece, you can travel from the ports of Piraeus or Rafina. Both are located close to Athens . You will have the choice between several companies, offering different travel times. As you may expect, the fastest boats are the most expensive!

So I prefer to warn you: price differences are really important depending on the company.

Some boats directly go from Piraeus or Rafina to the island of your choice. Other boats are making stops on one or several Greek Islands before you reach your destination.

When planning my trip to Greece , I’ve booked all my boat trips in advance on  FerriesinGreece website. It’s simply the best one to compare prices, travel time and find the best schedules for your trip.

If you don’t want to book in advance, all the companies have ticket offices in every port in Greek Islands. However, during high season, the boats might be full, or really expensive. That’s why you should book your tickets in advance!

Even if you book in advance, you will have to exchange your confirmation e-mail for a real ticket at the company’s desk before departure.

Do you want to reach the Cyclades as fast as possible? Then, I’ve got a good news: some of the Cyclades islands have an airport!

Where to land in the Cyclades ?

• Santorini: there are direct flights to Santorini from France, Italy , Netherlands, Germany or United Kingdom for example. You can also go to Athens and then take a connecting flight to Santorini.
• Mykonos: the  2nd international airport of the Cyclades. There are direct flights from France, Germany or United Kingdom, or connecting flights via Athens.
• Naxos, Paros, Syros and Milos have a national airport. You can get there directly from Athens or Thessaloniki .

Flight prices to the Cyclades vary greatly, so it is a good idea to compare them as soon as possible. To do this, you can use our flight comparator, in partnership with Skyscanner . You will be sure to get the best price!

If you’re seasick, choose the slowest boats, as they’re bigger and more stable.

In the Port of Piraeus, Santorini, Naxos or in any other island, the waiting lines for the ferries aren’t well organized. To stay polite, it’s a big mess!

Ferries are arriving and leaving all the time. The place is really crowded, and there are no signs or vocal announces to guide you to your boat. Check out the arrival of every boat, to be sure you won’t miss yours and don’t hesitate to ask the staff if you’re taking the right boat.

Every island in the Cyclades offers a completely different atmosphere and an unique landscape.

Is it really useful to rent a car in the Cyclades? The answer is definitely yes!

You might think that the Cyclades islands are quite small, and it’s easy to get around them on foot,  by bike or quad bike. Some people are using scooters, quads or buggies on the islands, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

It won’t be pleasant, as the Cyclades Islands are often very windy. With a car, you will also be able to travel a lot faster and discover more of the islands. In addition, using a scooter or a quad bike on the narrow and winding mountain roads is often slow and always dangerous!

You can always rent a quad bike for a few hours to go explore the remote beaches and coves.

If you want to rent a car in the Cyclades, you should use Booking.com Cars website. It allows you to:

• Easily compare all rental cars agencies prices and customer’s reviews.
• Get a “Full Protection Insurance” and get refunded in case of theft or accident
• Cancel or modify your booking for free
• They offer the “Best Price Guarantee”: If you find a similar car cheaper elsewhere, they will refund you the difference.

It’s simple, it’s the website I always use when I travel!

If you don’t find any available cars on Booking Cars, it’s because there might not be any affiliated car rental agencies on the smallest islands. In that case, you can rent your car directly at the port when you will arrive.

An important note: You will have to rent a different car in every Cyclades Island you want to visit, as you can’t take the ferry with a rental car.

If you want to rent a boat for a nice day at sea during your trip to Greece, you should book it with Samboat.

I’m actually planning a trip on the islands next September, and I have 2 questions for you: We will most likely arrive in Santorini, stay 3 nights there, then hop on to Milos (3nights), Paros/Naxos (4 nights), Mykonos (3 nights), then Athens… My questions are: – in the Paros/Naxos part, we are planning 4 nights there because we want to take one day to go on the other island (since they are pretty close), so I would like your advise on which one we should actually stay? Book 4 nights in Paros and take a day tour in Naxos, or book in Naxos and day trip to Paros?? – after Santorini, do you suggest to go first to Milos and then Paros/Naxos, or first P/N then Milos?? Cyclades Island Hopping: Best Islands & Route for 2024

Planning a trip island hopping around the stunning Cyclades island? My guide tells you everything you need to know – including the best route to take, what to do on each island and the one place I’d avoid

Island hopping in the Cyclades had been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember, so I couldn’t have been more excited when we finally landed in Mykonos back in 2021.

We spent two magical weeks hopping from island to island, diving into crystal-clear water, wandering the charming white streets and gorging on Tzatziki.

Visiting the Cyclades was one of my favourite trips I’ve ever taken, and I want to help you make the most of your trip there, so I’ve put together the ultimate Cyclades island hopping guide.

In this post I’ll give you the exact route we took for our 2 week island hopping trip, as well as a guide to each island we visited, and some essential information on transport, accommodation and the best time of year to go.

Why island hop in the Cyclades?

There’s around 6,000 Greek islands (although only about 200 are inhabited). So, there’s lots of choice when planning your island hopping trip.

You’ll often hear the islands spoken about in groups and there’s six to choose from:

The Ionian Islands

Including Corfu, Zakynthos and Kefalonia. Their known for their beautiful beaches and stunning landscapes

The Sporades

Found in the Northwest Aegean Sea, the Sporades consists of just 4 islands; Alonnisos, Skiathos, Skopelos and Skyros. These islands are known for beautiful beaches

The Dodecanese

Located in the Southeastern Aegean Sea including Rhodes, Kos and Symi. They’re known for their stunning architecture with a unique Venetian style

The Saronic Islands

Hydra, Aegina, Poros, Spetses, Salamis and Dokos. They’re the closest islands to Athens so they’re a great choice if you’re heading there first

The North Aegean Islands

Lesbos, Chios, Psara, Oinousses, Ikaria, Fournoi Korseon, Lemnos, Agios Efstratios and Samos

The Cyclades

Cyclades means “encircling islands,” and they get their name because they form a circle around the sacred island of Delos (Dílos) – the birthplace of Artemis and her brother Apollo.

This group of island includes Mykonos, Santorini, Syros, Naxos, Sifnos, Paros, Milos & Ios, and more.

These are most popular islands for Greek island hoppping (and the ones we visited). They’re known for their white and blue churches, and charming, cobbled streets. If it’s your first time island hopping, this is the perfect group of islands.

CYCLADES ISLAND HOPPING: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

Before you book.

Before you head on your Cyclades island hopping adventure, there’s a few things that will be helpful to think about.

When’s the best time to go Cyclades Island hopping?

For that true ‘Mamma Mia’ experience – you have to visit the Cyclades in summer. The waters are warm enough to swim in, the Bougainvillea trees are in bloom, and there are more frequent ferries, so it’s easier to actually ‘island hop’.

That being said, I’d try and avoid peak summer – accommodation will be expensive, especially on islands like Mykonos & Santorini, crowds are hectic, & it’ll be a lot harder to get reservations at restaurants.

We visited at the very end of August into the start of September and it was perfect.

How many Cyclades islands should I visit?

Obviously this completely depends on how long you’re going for and what type of holiday you want.

We went for 2 weeks and visited 6 islands in total (although Santorini was just for a day as we were flying home from there).

I’d say that was one too many. It was a lot of packing bags, running for ferries, and walking around in the hot sunshine trying to find where we were staying.

If you’re going for 2 weeks, I’d recommend 5 islands max, but 4 is probably ideal so you get at least 3 nights on each one.

Where should I start?

It doesn’t matter too much where you begin in the Cyclades, the determining factor will most likely be how easily you can get there.

We flew from London Gatwick to Mykonos in around 4 hours. Equally, we could have easily started in Santorini.

Travel tip: Bigger islands like Mykonos or Santorini make a great starting point for Cyclades island hopping as they’re better connected , so you’ll have more choice as to where you can go next. Plus, it’ll stop you from going back on yourself.

Our original plan was to fly into Athens and then get the ferry down to Mykonos, which takes about 2 and a half hours.

I really wanted to see Athens but our flight was cancelled last-minute so we had to change our route and fly directly into Mykonos.

If you do want to start in Athens, I’d recommend booking Monsieur Didot . It’s centrally located with a gorgeous design & some rooms have a terrace. Rooms start from £150 per night in summer, including breakfast.

How do i get between islands.

The best way to travel between the Cyclades islands is definitely by ferry.

In peak season, they’re really regular, and they go to the smaller islands you might not be able to reach by plane. 

How do I book ferry tickets?

We booked all of our ferries through Ferry Hopper before arriving in Greece. This is mostly because I’m a control freak and can’t deal with the thought of being stranded somewhere because the ferry sold out.

In reality, I’m sure you’d be perfectly fine to show up and get a ticket on the day. But if you want to book them in advance, you can do so here:

Ferry ports can get really busy and often, several ferries will arrive at once. Make sure you know the company you’re travelling with and listen really carefully to the announcements as it’s likely there’ll be a few companies going to the same islands on different routes.

Some of these routes are really quick as the ferry will go direct, and others will take hours as they’ll stop off at all the islands before going to your destination (usually a cheaper ticket).

We learnt this the hard way when we ran onto a ferry in Naxos thinking it was the one we’d booked to take us to Paros in just 30 minutes, only to find when we got on that we’d accidentally got on a slow ferry that was going to take 2 hours.

Learn from our mistakes because that was one rubbish ferry trip!

How much does the ferry cost?

There’s different types of tickets you can buy depending on the ferry company and how long the journey takes.

You don’t always pay more for the shorter routes, so it’s best to select your dates on Ferry Hopper to get the most accurate price.

But to give you an idea of cost, here’s what we paid for each journey (August 2021):

• Mykonos – Syros – £10pp
• Syros – Naxos – £31pp
• Naxos – Paros – £13pp
• Paros – Milos – £50pp
• Milos – Naxos – £50pp
• Naxos – Santorini – £35pp

Total ferry costs for 2 weeks Cyclades island hopping: £189pp

how long do the ferries take?

Our ferry times were:

• Mykonos – Syros | 1 hour 15
• Syros – Naxos | 1 hour 10
• Naxos – Paros | 35 minutes
• Paros – Milos | 1 hour 40
• Milos – Naxos | 3 hours 40
• Naxos – Santorini | 1 hour 20

Do I need to hire a car on the islands?

We didn’t hire a car on any of the islands except in Milos where we hired one for a day (we were there for four), and Paros where we hired an ATV (quad bike) for a day. 

I’d definitely recommend having a car or an ATV for at least some of the time you’re in Milos as there’s so many incredible beaches that are really hard to get to without one.

Plus, it gives you the freedom to stop off anywhere that catches your eye.

In Paros, we stayed in the harbour town of Naoussa but really wanted to see Lefkes, so hiring an ATV made it really easy to get there. I’d definitely recommend visiting Lefkes, but you can get a bus or a taxi if you don’t drive.

I definitely wouldn’t hire a car in Mykonos, but it’s worth noting that there’s hardly any taxis available (and definitely no uber!).

If you do manage to get a taxi, expect to pay a lot more than you would on the other islands. With that in mind, I’d choose where you stay to make it easier to get around on foot and public transport.

We didn’t hire a car in Syros or Naxos and that was fine for us, it completely depends on what you’re interested in seeing.

Cyclades island hopping: accommodation

Should i stay in hotels or airbnbs.

This is completely dependent on personal preference and availability when you book. We mostly stayed in Airbnbs and we loved that it allowed us to live island life more authentically.

One of my favourite memories from the trip was sitting on the steps outside our Airbnb in Syros, drinking and eating local delicacies with the owner and his friends.

Our Cyclades island hopping route took us 2 weeks, so we wanted a mix of relaxing by a pool drinking mojitos, and being able to cook for ourselves and save some money, so we booked a hotel for a few nights of the trip.

I cover where we stayed on each island below.

Cyclades island hopping: 2-week itinerary

This is the exact route we took (in the same order).

Mykonos > Syros > Paros > Milos > Naxos > Santorini.

This might be a controversial statement, but I didn’t love Mykonos, and I don’t know if I’d go back. It was very expensive, which I expected, but it doesn’t make it any less frustrating.

On top of that, it felt very inauthentic, almost like a Disneyland version of Greece.

Despite what it probably sounds like from my moaning, we did have some of our most fun days there – the bars are amazing and it’s the perfect place to go if you want beach clubs and big nights out.

But now I’ve visited, I don’t feel desperate to go back in the same way I do with other islands we went to. 

Getting there:

Fly directly into Mykonos International Airport or get the ferry from another island. We flew from London to Mykonos directly.

Length of time:

We stayed in Mykonos for 3 nights

What area to stay in:

Stay in Mykonos town, also called “Chora” – home to most of the island’s bars, restaurants and sights.

Things to do and see:

• View Mykonos from the hidden viewpoint with this Google Maps pin
• Get the bus for €1 to Platis Gialos Beach and visit the beach clubs
• See the Mykonos Windmills
• Spend the day at Scorpios
• Eat at M-eating, Pili Mykonos, Hippie Fish, Beefbar, Gioras Bakery
• Drink at Negrita’s, Kastro’s, Principote and Katerina’s

Although we only stayed in Mykonos for a few nights, we split our time between two different places due to our plans changing last-minute (we were originally meant to fly into Athens).

For our first night we stayed at Mykonos Moussa Suites . I probably wouldn’t recommend staying here for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, it’s not in the best location in Mykonos, you have to get a taxi everywhere, although it is opposite Hippie Fish , which is a really popular restaurant on the island.

It was expensive, and we didn’t feel as though we got value for money. It was mostly small things like the beanbag in the room being really dirty, and there being no water in the fridge on arrival, but I wouldn’t expect that from the price point of this hotel. 

For the rest of our stay in Mykonos, we were in the heart of the main town, in this Airbnb .

We absolutely loved our stay here, it was right in the centre of everything, so we could walk everywhere, but far enough away from the restaurants and bars that it wasn’t noisy.

This place was cheaper than the hotel, and definitely better value for money.

Other hotels I’d recommend:

Blanco Room Mykonian Mews Kensho Ornos Boheme Kalesma

Syros wasn’t on my list of Greek islands when we first started planning our trip, but my friend had visited the year before and raved about how beautiful it was, and in my opinion, there’s no better recommendation than one that comes from someone that knows exactly what you’d enjoy.

So we added it to the itinerary and I’m so glad we did.

On arrival, our Airbnb host, Ioannis, asked where we’d travelled from. We nervously claimed we’d arrived from Mykonos and he looked at us, slightly apprehensively, and said “well, forget everything you experienced in Mykonos, because Syros is completely the opposite”.

He was right, and it was a very welcome rest from the chaos of the previous few days.

From Mykonos, we got the ferry to Syros, which took just over an hour.

We spent 2 nights/1.5 days in Syros

We choose the capital, Ermoupoli. The ferry arrives here so it’s easy to get to your accommodation, and it’s well connected to the rest of the island if you want to visit the other beaches and villages.

• Asteria beach
• Ciel beach club
• Eat at Cantina Analogue
• Wander around Miaouli Square
• Drink cocktails at Jar
• Try Loukoumia (a sweet similar to Turkish Delight)
• Explore the streets of Ano Syros

We stayed in an Airbnb in Syros and I can’t recommend it enough. It’s centrally located, with incredible views over the beach opposite, and the owner, Ioannis, is lovely (this is where we ended up spending an evening with him and his friends).

Aristide Oro Suites Castro Hotel Syros Soul Luxury Suites

After Syros, we headed to Paros, which was a strong contender for my favourite island.

It’s a smaller version of Mykonos, with lots of amazing bars and places to eat, but still maintaining its charm and authenticity.

We got the ferry from Syros to Paros (via Naxos) and the total journey time was around 1 hour 45 minutes (in theory – ours actually took a lot longer due to the previously mentioned ferry trouble).

We spent 2 nights/1.5 days in Paros

The harbour town of Noussa is the best place to stay if you want to be amongst good restaurants and bars. 

• Visit the gorgeous village of Lefkes
• Eat at Yemeni, Stilvi and Soso
• Drink at Trickster Bar, Fotis, Agosta, Sommaripa Consolato and Linardo’s
• Visit Parikia Village
• Get the boat to Antiparos
• Visit Agios Ioannis Detis church

Paros was the only place where we had a hotel with a pool and we absolutely loved it. It was in the middle of our trip and all we wanted to do was relax with a drink and not do much.

We stayed at Anemomylos Residence and it was perfect. It’s a boutique hotel only a 5-minute walk from the centre of Naoussa.

The staff were so friendly (and made some of the best mojitos I’ve ever had), the pool was a brilliant size and it’s opposite an ATV rental shop, which was perfect for exploring the rest of the island.

Milos was without a doubt my favourite island we visited. It’s the one place I’d strongly advise you not to miss when planning your route. Think crystal-clear waters, hidden coves and dramatic landscapes. It’s everything you imagine when you think of a Greek island. 

We got the ferry from Paros to Milos which takes around 1 hour 40 minutes.

We spent 4 nights in Milos, a deliberate decision because we just wanted to stay still for a while. You could easily do it in just a few days though.

The three most popular places to stay in Milos are Pollonia, Plaka and Adamas. I researched all 3 before visiting and settled on Pollonia, a stunning fishing village on the North of the island.

It’s less crowded than Adamas and Plaka, but still home to great restaurants and a quiet buzz.

I only visited Adamas briefly as its where the ferry port is located, and my initial impressions were that it was much more hectic and slightly too touristy – it doesn’t allow you to really get to know Milos.

Plaka’s another great option, it’s the capital of Milos and its hilltop position lends itself to incredible views of the Aegean sea.

• Eat at Medusa

We stayed in an Airbnb in Milos and I get asked for the link all the time. I’m not surprised, it’s one of the most magical places I’ve ever stayed – the garden leads down into a (pretty much) private beach!

It was the most expensive place we stayed (we paid £220 a night but it’s more expensive now) but for us it was worth every single penny.

Naxos was the final island we stayed on and was a last-minute contender to our route. We toyed with the idea of staying in Santorini but settled on lesser-visited Naxos.

Naxos is known for its beaches, stunning scenery, and food (this one swayed me), a lot of which is grown locally on the island.

We got the ferry from Milos to Naxos which takes around 3 hours 40 – the longest journey we did.

Stay in Naxos Town (the Chora) to be amongst the restaurants and bars. You can easily get around the island with public transport.

• Drink at 520 cocktail bar for views over the harbour
• Eat at Lithos
• Spend the day at Macao beach club
• See the Temple of Apollo
• Hike Mount Zas
• Go windsurfing

We stayed in an Airbnb near Naxos town which was perfect for what we needed. The room was a generous size with a great terrace and the host, Alexia, was lovely.

We spent our final day of our Cyclades island hopping trip in Santorini, a whistle-stop tour before our flight home to the UK departed in the evening.

We very nearly extended our stay by a couple of nights so we could properly explore the island, but our bank balance wasn’t co-operating with that idea.

But this year we made it back to Santorini and spent 4 days exploring the island.

Santorini is one of those places that you see all over Instagram, which often leads to high expectations and subsequent disappointment. But for me, it lived up to all of my expectations, and more.

With white-washed houses built into the cliffs, jaw-dropping views of the caldera, and winding cobbled streets lined with bougainvillea, it’s easy to see the appeal.

We got the ferry from Naxos to Santorini which takes around 1 hour 20 minutes.

We only visited for the day during our island hopping route but have been back since for 4 days.

If you’re planning on adding it to your Greek island hopping route, I’d recommend at least 2 nights and 3 full days in Santorini.

• Take pictures in charming Oia
• Do the cliff walk from Fira to Oia
• Eat seafood in Ammoudi Bay
• Stay in a cave hotel

During our recent trip to Santorini, we split our time between three hotels, Nobu , Olvos Luxury Suites and Magma Resort. All three were complimentary stays and each one had their merits, but I’d recommend Olvos the most.

Located just a short walk from the centre of Oia, there’s just 3 rooms, each with their own private plunge pool, as well as a shared infinity pool overlooking the caldera.

Often you feel as though you have the whole place to yourself, and the views are simply breathtaking.

Our host, Anastasia, couldn’t do enough to make our stay special, including organising a home cooked meal to be delivered from a local restaurant. This was my favourite hotel from our time Cyclades island hopping – it’s a real gem.

How do you travel between the cyclades islands.

The best way to travel between the Cyclades islands is by ferry. There’s a number of companies to choose from so you can find the best option for your trip. In peak season, they’re really regular, and they go to the smaller islands you can’t reach by plane.

What is the best route to island hop in Greece?

For the best route to island hop Greece, I’d recommend starting in Athens or Mykonos. You can spend a few days exploring Athens before flying to Mykonos, and then visiting Syros, Paros, Milos, Naxos, Santorini. If you’re not fussed on Athens, you can fly directly to Mykonos and start there.

Which is nicer Paros or Naxos?

I preferred Paros to Naxos , but it depends on what you like to do. Naxos is much greener (it’s actually the greenest island in the Cyclades), and has incredible mountains perfect for hiking. Paros has the quintessential white washed buildings, traditional villages and crystal clear water.

Which is the prettiest Greek island?

Milos is the prettiest Greek island (in my opinion). Think crystal-clear waters, hidden coves and dramatic landscapes. It’s everything you imagine when you think of a Greek island. There’s so many beautiful beaches here you probably won’t have time to see them all, you’re simply spoilt for choice.

Which island to stay in Cyclades?

There’s plenty of choice when it comes to which island to stay in the Cyclades, so I’d recommend experiencing several of them as you can easily get the ferry in between them. If it’s your first visit, I’d suggest visiting Paros, Naxos, Syros, Milos, Paros and Santorini.

How long is the ferry from Athens to Cyclades?

The length of the ferry from Athens to the Cyclades depends on which island you’re visiting. The closest Cyclades island to Athens is Kea, and the ferry takes about an hour. If you’re visiting Mykonos, the ferry takes around 2.5 hours, and to Santorini is takes 5 hours.

What are the 2 best Greek islands to visit?

The 2 best Greek islands to visit are Milos and Paros. Both are absolutely beautiful islands, and much quieter (and cheaper) than Santorini and Mykonos. Paros and Milos both have incredible beaches with bright blue water, great restaurants, and traditional Greek villages to explore.

Is Paros nicer than Mykonos?

Yes, I think Paros is much nicer than Mykonos. It’s quieter, prettier, and much less hectic. For me, Mykonos felt very inauthentic, an unfortunate result of over tourism. Paros had brilliant restaurants, bars and plenty of things to do, so if you can only choose one, I’d definitely visit Paros.

Should I go to Santorini or Paros?

I’d recommend visiting Paros over Santorini. T hey’re similar in style – both have the traditional Cycladic architecture and whitewashed buildings, but Paros is much more affordable than Santorini, so you’ll get a lot more for your money. I also found the restaurants to be much better in Paros than Santorini.
