Wartsila Voyage sets out vision for port call digitalisation
Since launching its Just-in-Time (JIT) call solution, Navi-Port, in late 2019, Wartsila Voyage has now formalised a full strategy for digital port call optimisation.
The port call process continues to be “inefficient and chaotic” and that is where the company sees opportunities for its solutions, according to Bruce Mills, Global Business Development Director of Ship Traffic Control, Wartsila Voyage.
“JIT is just one part of the jigsaw,” he said, “Navi-Port was launched in late 2019 and we now have some real-life case studies.”
Mills noted that many in the industry have already tackled some of the low-hanging fruit when it comes to digitalising processes, and this includes JIT, but there is a lot more that needs to be done.
The company is looking to connect an ecosystem that will ultimately enable digital port calls: including Connective Navigation Systems; Navi-Port; Vessel Traffic Management Systems; Navi-Safe for collision avoidance; and Port Management Information Systems (PMIS).
Pilots and tugs are also an important part of the ecosystem with marine operations management to connect them to the shore system and remotely control operations on the pilotage and towage services from the shore.
Key to the overall strategy is bringing together the entire port community from customs to ship agents to the vessels and port authorities under the Wartsila digital port call platform.
For multiple stakeholders have access to the same tools and data is the aim. The company is also encouraging port operators, like Associated British Ports (ABP) in the UK, who manage multiple ports to consider implementing such a system across its entire portfolio.
One case where the company has already seen success is through its work with the Port of Tanger-Med through the co-development of a new PMIS.
The project includes the Wartsila Navi-Harbour Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) software application and Wartsila Navi-Port for JIT arrivals.
Mills said that in this example the port is now likely to give priority to vessels that already have Wartsila tools onboard, making port calls more seamless.
“I think this model will be rolled out more and more,” he said.
Wartsila Voyage is currently focused on four key objectives including decarbonisation, safety, making more of now, and affordability.
Regarding decarbonisation, Mills noted that the subject was one of the top five corporate objectives for the company, and shareholders are pushing for increased focus..
For the company this means providing “best-in-class” solutions and services to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions.

Wärtsilä integrates Voyage business into Wärtsilä Marine Power
- Thursday, 16 February 2023 | Communications & Cyber Security
Wärtsilä has integrated the Voyage business into Wärtsilä Marine Power, with a plan to reduce 300 jobs.
The Voyage offering is planned to be streamlined focusing on fleet and port optimisation and related simulation and training services, based on the now-completed Voyage strategy review. The planned business unit in formation, Voyage Services, will secure a strong strategic fit with Wärtsilä Marine Power.
A strengthened port-to-port voyage optimisation can further lower costs and reduce emissions in marine operations.
NACOS Navigation, NACOS Automation, Dynamic Positioning and sensors would be merged into a new business unit and moved to Wärtsilä Portfolio Business during April 2023 according to the plan.
Wärtsilä Portfolio Business consists of business units, which are run independently with the aim of accelerating performance improvement and unlocking value through divestments or other strategic alternatives. Business continuity will be ensured, and current customer commitments will not be impacted.
Roger Holm, President of Wärtsilä Marine Power, commented: ‘We are committed to driving decarbonisation in the maritime industry and accelerating the turnaround of our former Voyage business. By combining digital capabilities with performance-based services, we plan to unlock synergies and offer our customers unique end-to-end solutions to optimise their vessel and port operations. The planned integration of these specific voyage offerings to our existing Marine Power portfolio will provide customers with the strongest decarbonisation offering available’.
Wärtsilä has started a formal process globally with a plan to reduce a maximum of 300 positions in the current Voyage organisation, while at the same time opening approximately 150 new positions.
Additionally, Wärtsilä has continued to review the strategic fit of other business units. As a result of this, Marine Electrical Systems, focusing on electrical integration, is planned to be moved to Portfolio Business during April 2023.
Tamara de Gruyter, EVP of Marine Systems and Portfolio Business, stated: ‘Marine Electrical Systems largely serves different markets and customers than the rest of Wärtsilä and has limited strategic fit with the rest of the group. Therefore, we believe that an independent set-up and potential new ownership will be the best way forward for Marine Electrical Systems to develop and create shareholder value. Business continuity will be ensured, and current customer commitments will not be impacted’.
A restatement of financials according to the new planned organisational structure will be published by Wärtsilä in due course.

Technology group Wärtsilä has supplied its new dual-fuel engine simulator technology for Wavelink Maritime Institute (WMI), the maritime training arm of the Singapore Maritime Officer’s Union (SMOU). The navigational and technological simulators are a central feature of the simulation suite at WMI, which was recently inaugurated by H.E. Ms. Grace FU Hai Yien, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment and Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations of the Republic of Singapore.
Sustainable fuels will play an integral role in the maritime industry’s goal of achieving net zero in shipping by 2050. However, an important part of this transition requires crew to be upskilled to handle these new and alternative fuels. The state-of-the-art Wärtsilä simulator technology is specifically designed to train seafarers in the latest efficiency concepts and prepare them for operating with the next generation of marine fuels. The dual-fuel simulators include a virtual reality element to replicate realistic scenarios with different fuels and engine types. They also incorporate cloud-based simulation combined with Wavelink’s own learning management system to provide blended learning experiences.
"Seafarers today must continue to reskill and upskill, particularly in the areas of decarbonisation and new alternative fuels. Wärtsilä’s advanced simulator technology allows us to provide the highest quality maritime training, ensuring that our students are fully in step with the transition currently underway in the shipping industry," says Mr Teo Keong Kok, Managing Director, Wavelink Maritime Institute.
The simulation suite also includes a full-mission bridge with 270-degree visualisation, and a part-task bridge with 120-degree visualisation for ultimate hands-on ship handling training in compliance with international standards. The technical simulators include full-mission and multi-functional network class-room set-ups for engine-room and liquid cargo handling training.
"We are pleased to continue our strong relationship with WMI”, comments Kiran Kumar, Product Sales Manager at Wärtsilä Marine. “Climate regulation is pushing for constant improvement in fuel efficiency to drive down emissions meaning alternative and transition fuels will play a significant role in achieving these goals. The new simulation suite with Wärtsilä technology provides realistic training opportunities that will allow their graduates to safely operate technologically advanced vessels, whilst preparing them for shipping’s decarbonised future."
Wärtsilä began its partnership with WMI in 2014 with the launch of a maritime simulation centre, including a class of 16 workstations. An integrated engine room and liquid cargo handling simulator class of 20 workstations was also delivered for the training of engineering watchkeeping personnel.
Technology group Wärtsilä will supply its latest simulator technology for a new maritime training centre in Finland. The order has been placed by the South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (Xamk) and the Joint Authority of Education of Kotka-Hamina Region (Ekami). It was booked by Wärtsilä in November 2023. The simulator will be installed in Xamk's new campus in Kotka, Finland, where also part of Ekami´s maritime training will take place in the future.
The simulator will feature the latest versions of Wärtsilä’s Navi-Trainer professional and Techsim simulation software , as well as the latest Navi Sailor and NACOS Platinum bridge systems . These include multi-pilot workstations for Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS), radar and conning applications.
The training centre will have two large and three medium sized full mission navigational bridges with 360-degree visualisation. They include digital chart tables as well as a separate bridge wing console operated in virtual reality. For technical training, the centre will have two engine room simulators implemented with two fully loaded control rooms. The simulators come with touchscreen technology, making it easy to swap between any of the engine room models.
“This new learning environment provides students with a unique opportunity to develop their practical skills and prepare for demanding maritime tasks. We are fortunate to have Wärtsilä’s highly advanced simulator technology as the basis for this training. Many critical operations cannot be safely practiced on an actual vessel, so in addition to acquiring technical skills, a versatile and realistically functioning simulation environment will significantly enhance the safety of vessels,” said Olli-Pekka Brunila, Director of Education, South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences.
“The state-of-the-art Wärtsilä simulator system will be one of the largest and most advanced in Europe. It will enable students to obtain the most realistic level of operational experience possible in an educational environment. We are proud to be supporting Xamk and Ekami with their goal of preparing students for their future maritime careers,” commented Ola Lundqvist, Product Sales Manager, Voyage Services at Wärtsilä.
In addition to the various system features, there will be several instructor and debriefing rooms capable of working with any part of the simulator. There will also be a dedicated command centre for vessel traffic service, oil spill response, search and rescue, terminal cargo office, and more training applications.
Hannu Mäntymaa, Vice President for Voyage Services, Wärtsilä and Managing Director of Wärtsilä Finland added: “With decarbonisation as a core focus for the industry, maritime organisations are looking for unique end-to-end solutions which enable them to optimise their vessel and port operations. This new maritime training centre from Xamk and Ekami will play an integral role in unlocking synergies here. After all, if organisations are going to benefit from future fuel engines, for example, crews must be highly competent, operate with the highest levels of safety and have access to continuous training programmes.”
The Wärtsilä equipment is scheduled for delivery in August 2024. Xamk is an existing customer to Wärtsilä, having had another one of Wärtsilä’s training simulator in use for more than 20 years.

First black-start set for China
Wärtsilä Corporation was awarded a contract in August 2005 to supply a black-start generating set to Shanghai Zhadian Gas Turbine Generation Co of China. The 4.3 MW set will be powered by a 12-cylinder Wärtsilä 32 diesel engine. It is due to be handed over in June 2006.
Black-start generating sets provide valuable insurance in the event of a total or partial loss of electricity supplies, in other words in a blackout, throughout a country’s transmission system. They provide the necessary electrical supply for starting individual power stations, powering station ancillaries while the main generating plant is prepared for starting.
The origin of the Shanghai Zhadian black-start plant goes back to the USA and Moscow blackouts in August 2003 and May 2005 respectively. Yet not all grids are equipped with black-start generating plants as it adds to capital costs and the risk of a complete blackout is usually deemed acceptably small. However, the North American and Moscow failures led the Chinese government to review its policies and it urged the Chinese electrical authorities to install black-start capabilities. The Shanghai Zhadian installation is the first black-start plant in the Chinese national grids.
A black-start generating plant is in effect an independent auxiliary power plant adjacent to a main power station that has the capability to be started from a complete ‘dead’ condition within an agreed minimum time. The black-start generating set and its various ancillaries and control systems are started from compressed air and batteries. The systems have sufficient capacity for multiple sequential black starts to allow for a possible tripping of the transmission system during the re-instatement process.
Wärtsilä has made a number of black-start plants world-wide with generating capacities between 3 MW and 34 MW. However, the main concentration has been in the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Algeria.
